1. Connecting Essay
My Photo Kenneth Willardt
In this shoot I looked at ‘pop art’ as my theme and how I would represent the human figure this way.
I like how I was able to make the subject look almost 2D and how the photo overall looks like a
modern piece of pop art. The expression of the model is very influenced by the makeup look in this
photo but I think it is an accurate representation of the pop art theme that I was inspired by. The
colours are all bold and kept to a minimum, with only three or four colours present in the photo. I
like the composition and positioning of the piece and how the model is off-centre. The makeup has
ensured that the shapes seen in have remained clear and there is a sharp shape of the model against
the background.
This photo by Kenneth Willardt was taken from one of Maybelline’s beauty campaigns. The cropping
of the photo is really tight around the models face and the ensured that the makeup is seen very
clearly. I like the spotty effect that has been put over the photo as this is a common convention of
pop art. This photo has a more contemporary, modern feel about it with a brighter array of colours
and I think the photo has a more modern execution. I like the way the model is looking away from
the camera and up towards the light as this has really provided nice highlights on the highest points
of the face – it has also highlighted the eyes nicely too. I don’t think photo looks as 2D and as ‘art’
like as mine, but I think it has refreshing vibe about it.
I really like both of these photos and I think the pop art element of the photos is innovate and
unique. Both the models have similar poses and expressions that have been exaggerated by the
makeup. The colours have been kept minimal and bright which is conventional of the pop art theme
that the photographers where going for. The models have been able to really capture the attention
of their audience and again I think this is complimented with the makeup. The lighting in both of the
2. photos has really accentuated the highpoints on the face, and this has helped to exaggerate the pop
art look that the photographers were evidently going for. Both of these photos are really visually
interesting ad this in turn has made them very iconic shots that conform to the style that is trying to
be achieved as well as being a nice variation of a classic beauty shot.
