3. ‘The Vow’
• 1. Why do you like this poster?
- I like this poster because it shows the audience the relationship between the two
characters within the poster. It does this by using personal space contact. I think that
this makes the poster work really well. I also like the fact that the main image covers
the entire length of the poster and is therefore the first thing that you look at. I also like the
positioning and size of the masthead because it is not overpowering but can still be easily read by the
audience.
• 2. What does it feature?
- The poster features a masthead which can be seen in the bottom third of the space. It also includes
a main image that covers the entire length of the poster. It features a slogan that has been placed
underneath the masthead. The camera angle that has been featured is an ‘eye level’ angle to make it
easier to connect with the audience. It also features the model’s credits by placing the actor’s and
actress’ name at the top of the poster. Within the bottom third of the poster, we can also see a billing
block that is fairly small because it has little importance to the audience,
• 3. How has it influenced you?
- It has influenced me to want to use my two main characters within my poster. It has influenced me
to do this because it illustrates the relationship between the two to the audience. It has also
influenced me to want to use personal space and contact to indicate the relationship. It has also
influenced me to want to place the model’s credits in the top third of the space because it works
really well.
4. ‘Safe Haven’
• 1. Why do you like this poster?
- I like this poster because it is similar to ‘The Vow’ poster in terms of demonstrating
the relationship between the two main characters in the film. They use personal space
and contact to inform the audience about the type of relationship they have. The main
image covers the length of the poster and this works really well. I also like this poster because of the
way the masthead has been created – I like the fact that the masthead font is large but still doesn’t
take the attention away from the main image. It therefore informs the audience what the name of
the film is without overpowering the entire poster.
• 2. What does it feature?
- It features a main image that covers the entire length of the poster. It also features a masthead that
informs the audience of the film title. Underneath that, there is a slogan that reads ‘you know when
you find it’. Within the poster, there is also a billing block which can be seen in the bottom third of
the space. This has been put here because it is of little importance to the audience. Another feature
of this poster is that there is a selling point at the top of the poster which encourages the audience to
go and see it.
• 3. How has it influenced you?
- It has influenced me to want to also use personal space and contact similar to this poster to
demonstrate to the audience the relationship between the two main characters without having to be
descriptive. It has also influenced me to want to include a slogan that is relatable to the film to give
the audience a rough idea of what the film includes/is about i.e. love or life.
5. ‘The Fault In Our Stars’
• 1. Why do you like this poster?
- I like this poster because it is simple yet effective. It uses few words but is still powerful
towards the audience. I also like it purely because of the connection shown between the two
main characters. The use of entering personal space and contact allows for the audience to
easily establish that the two are in love. I think that I like this poster because of the facial expression of the female
character – she is seen to be smiling which lightens the mood of the poster. I also like the fact that the two main
characters are playing down on the grass so the camera angle is a ‘top angle’ which allows us to be placed above
the two to give us a better look at them.
• 2. What does it feature?
- This poster features a masthead that can be seen in the bottom third of the poster. It also features a slogan which
says ‘one sick love story’. This can be seen to be underneath the masthead. There is also a selling point that can be
found in the top third of the poster. This selling point tells the audience that the story is based on a bestseller and
therefore encourages people to watch it. The most important feature within this poster is the main image which
can be seen to be covering the entire length of the poster because it has a higher importance compared to the
rest of the poster. It also features a date which indicates a release day. On either side of the date, there is a
hashtag and website that allows for the audience to get involved. This is known as audience participation.
• 3. How has it influenced you?
- This poster has influenced me to want to use some sort of audience participation technique similar to ‘The Fault
In Our Stars’ poster – i.e. a website where people can go to check details of the film out. It has also influenced me
to see that sometimes less is more and that I should not overcrowd my poster if I want it to be effective enough to
capture the audience’s attention.
7. Entertainment Weekly –
Kate and Leo
• 1. Why do you like this magazine cover?
- I like this magazine cover because it uses personal space and contact similar to the posters and
therefore indicates to the audience that the two on the cover have had some sort of connection to one
another i.e. a work or personal relationship. I like the fact that the two on the cover are famous and
known for their roles in ‘Titanic’ and therefore we know that their relationship is work based. I also like
the fact that the magazine is not overcrowded but still informs the audience a bit about the people on
the cover as well as other articles that are related to film.
• 2. What does it feature?
- It features a masthead which is seen in the top third of the magazine. This informs the audience what
the title of the magazine is. It also features a main image that fills the majority of the cover and also
overlaps the masthead. Entertainment Weekly also features a dateline which tells the audience when
the issue was released as well as the issue number. The cover contains a quote and different articles
which feature on both sides of the cover. It also features a grey/silver background which indicates that
the shot was taken in a studio.
• 3. How has it influenced you?
- It has influenced me to want to ensure that my two characters are connecting on an emotional and
physical level by using contact and entering personal space. It has also influenced me to want to include
a dateline that features within the cover to inform the audience. I would also like to shoot mine in the
studio because it has influenced me to want to do the same within my cover.
8. Entertainment Weekly –
Twilight
• 1. Why do you like this magazine cover?
- I like this magazine because it features the two main characters within the film
‘Twilight’. The two characters are seen to be using contact to connect with each other
and entering each other’s personal space. I also like this magazine cover because it uses very little wording
but still looks like a magazine. I think that I like the cover because of the colour of the background. I also
think that I like this magazine cover because of the intensity of the couple – the shot type allows the
audience to get closer to the two and feel their connection on an emotional level.
• 2. What does it feature?
- It features a masthead which can be seen in the top third of the cover. Above the cover is a dateline which
features the date of publication as well as the issue number. In the bottom left of the magazine cover, we
can see the model’s credits. This has been featured in the cover because it allows for the audience to make
the connection between the actor and actress and their characters in which they play. It also features one
article which can be seen to be displayed on the bottom right of the cover. This is the only article on the
cover because it relates to the main image which is the idea of the cover. The main image featured covers
the entire length of the magazine.
• 3. How has it influenced you?
- It has influenced me to want to use contact and personal space to inform the audience about the
characters. It has also influenced me to want to use a green/blue colour for my background because it
allows for them to stand out easier.
9. Entertainment Weekly –
TFIOS
• 1. Why do you like this magazine cover?
- I like this cover because of the detail seen within the main image. The fact that they’re using contact
and personal space indicates that the two are connected with one another. I also like the fact that
the two main characters are looking directly at the lens. This makes the audience connect with them
easier. I like the fact that the left side of the magazine is related to the main image whereas the
section on the right is based on TV articles. I also like the fact that the main image overlaps the
masthead but it is still recognisable.
• 2. What does it feature?
- It features a main image that fills up the majority of the length of the magazine. It also features a
masthead that is seen in the top third of the cover. A dateline can be seen to be featured above the
masthead. This dateline indicates the date of release and an issue number. At the bottom left of the
cover we can also see the model’s credits which feature below the article title of the film.
• 3. How has it influenced you?
- It has influenced me to want to position the article related to the film to the left of the magazine. It
has also influenced me to want to increase the font size of this article to make it stand out against the
rest of the articles seen. It has also influenced me to want to ensure that my models look directly at
the lens to allow for the audience to connect to them.
