1. UNIT 21 evaluation
Start: This unit was an open project where you could choose anything you wanted to do with in the media range.
Anything from making music videos to filming short films. I chose to do 2 double page magazine spreads including my
own photography and editing. I have aimed to make it look like a high end magazine but putting my own twist on the
creation. The photography is the main part of this task and I will basing my photos round festival fashion, hair and
make-up. I will be doing all the make-up clothes and hair myself and I am using 4 of my close friends to model for me. I
made permission slips for each of them to sign to confirm that they are ok with me using their photos for my project.
Also I have made risk assessments for each of them in case of an accident and how I will face to problem. The setting
where the photos will be taken will be in my garden. This will be easier for me as I can use the flowers and grass as the
background. I will also be using natural light to take my photos so It has to be sunny on the day of the photo shoot. I
have decided to do a festival theme because summer is my favourite time of the year and festivals are a big part of
their summer holidays for the majority of people. I also love the idea of dressing people up the way I want them to look
choosing what they have to wear and how their hair and make-up will be.
1.My final project is pretty much the same as my initial ideas. The colour scheme is different as I was going to do it
black and white and now it done pink orange and black. This gave it more colour and made it stand out. This would be
good as it would stand out to my chosen audience as the photos and the topic is relatable to most 16-30 year olds. I
used photos from the internet as I couldn’t make my own but I did modify it on photo shop to change it to the colours I
want. I looked up how to change the effect of the photos I took to vintage retro and I did it for each of my photos. (I
made a separate word document on how I photo shopped the photos). I liked the outcome of my project and I feel I
achieved it to my full potential. The only this I wish I did was use all the models I said I was going to use because I only
ended up using two because they couldn’t all make it to the times I made for them. I feel that my magazine is simple
and sweet showing everything I wanted to show through photos and a small bit of writing. Doing two double page
spreads wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be, so I think I could have done a front cover if I had more time.
2. I did a lot of research on different types of photography mostly on ways other magazines have done it or clothing
websites e.g. American apparel, Topshop and urban outfitters. There weren’t any photography styles that completely fit
what kind of photos I wanted so i gathered different ideas from each style and made my own. I started off wanting to do
really simple black and white effects a lot like the American Apparel style. But because I wanted to do festival it didn’t
fit, as festivals are bright colourful and over the top. Also I found festival photos from the internet and last year’s
festival styles to get inspiration for my photo shoot. I also looked at Elle magazine and the way they lay out there
The Layout I
created before
putting my own
photos in.
2. magazine spread pages. It was quite an average layout quite similar to a lot of others, so I picked up a Topshop
(catalogue) magazine in store which is free and only give out in stores but I liked the layout for that so i decided to take
ideas from what I liked and put it into my own design. I added my own ideas to the final layout to show that I do have
some kind of creativity and have my own ideas.
Overall I think I did good a achieved what i wanted to do. I talked to the people in my class and asked them to give me
feedback on what they liked and disliked about my magazine. Most said they liked the layout of the pages and the style
of the photos. But the background (white) is bland and needs more colour. I would agree but I choose to do it with white
so I kept it like that. I think I could have added more but I couldn’t do it without making it looked cluttered. I used photo
shop throughout this project, which helped me a lot with the editing of the photos enhancing the colour and changing
the effects. I am happy with the outcome and there isn’t a lot that I would do different but there is improvement I could
have made after hearing other people’s opinions.
