2. Research
At first, I didn’t know what a fanzine was so I researched what they were and then made a slide to show that I have
understood what I’m going to produce. After, this I looked at different fanzines of different genres and then analysed them. I
found this very helpful considering I wasn’t sure what they were. This gave me a good insight of how to layout my work and
what genre to do. I picked three fanzines, two of them were photography and the third one was ‘conversations with
contemporary female artists.’ I chose the photography ones so I could see how they laid it all out and what kind of colours
they have used. As I wasn't sure with my fanzine layout this really helped me especially with the interview layout.
As part of my research, I came up with three mind maps for three ideas. I chose a nature photography fanzine as most people
have said that my photography work is good so I thought I'd put it to the test. With this I learnt how to edit the images
properly on Photoshop by using the hue/saturation, levels and colour balance etc. This was helpful as some of the images I
had were either bright or dark so it brought out the colour more.
When I was conducting my interview, I was thinking of questions that would make my audience think deeply about it. I sent
my interview to different age ranges because I wanted varied responses. When I got the responses I had to choose wisely
which of the interviews I wanted within my fanzine.
3. Planning
The main strength about planning is the three mind maps I did at the beginning talking about the ideas and expanding this
to cover different aspects of what I could create and the range of my ideas to develop. Also, I considered software and
hardware along with the timespan and audience these ideas would have. This was a strength
When it came to my mood board's, I came up with two different mood boards for two different concepts of Autumn. Such as,
colours, general images of animals, stones and nature and then Autumn itself. This was a strength as it showed the different
ideas come together, Also, the analyse helped as I talked about what had influenced me so then I could use it in my final
product.
The next thing I started looking at was the types of fonts I could use on my fanzine and the colour schemes. I picked out
many different colour options so I could choose what it would look better with my work.
I created flat plans for my fanzine to see what it would look like and if there was anything I needed to add or remove from my
work to improve it which was very helpful.
4. Time Management
In the time I had, I used my time wisely. If I had additional time, I wouldn't have used it well. I made sure I had done all my power
points first and keep to the deadline by completing some work outside of college. Before we started producing our fanzines, I
had come up with the name of my work so I started working on that. Another part of my work that I completed before was my
interview. As I had done my interview, it meant that I could pick which interview I wanted to be n my fanzine. Just as a back up I
picked two interviews.
I came up with a schedule showing what I was going to be working throughout the three weeks I had. I thoroughly went through
all the power points to see what I had to do. When it came to the first week of production, I wasn’t sure what I had to start first as
I had started some of my work beforehand. I managed to stick to my schedule for the first time. One of the questions were ’how
long should you spend on each task?’ I believe I used this time as I wrote in my schedule that it would take 30-45 minutes for
every task unless it was a small task that was 20 minutes. I can say that I followed this time scale for each task and if needed come
back to it.
Furthermore, I had to take one week off due to an illness, which made me behind with my work. As I had done all my power
points already there was not much I could do. The good thing was I had all my images ready and my contents, introduction and
the interviews. When I came back, it was second week which meant this was the last week to do production. This wasn’t a bad
thing as I had all my images ready and they needed was editing and then placed onto InDesign.
6. Technical Qualities
For my main image, I wanted to use the same image for both the front and the back because
when I saw the fanzine next to it, I thought it looked really good and quite effective. The image I
have used is a photo I have taken myself of York. Both images are different and have been edited
differently as well. I have used the levels, hue/saturation etc to edit my images whereas the other
image looks like the opacity has been turned down so then the text box and text is visible enough
to read. On the back of the left fanzine has just the image on it and no text whereas I have added
in a poem which I have aligned in Photo Shop and used the leaf brush tool to create the design
behind the text, luckily it matches in with the background so it meant I didn't have to change it.
The colour schemes are very different, my fanzine uses a lot of dark colours whereas the other one
uses light natural colours. When it comes to the text, the one on the left looks like it has been
handwritten and on mine you can tell that the text is long and elegant.
8. Aesthetic Qualities
I personally think my work looks good, there are few pages where i thought afterwards i could have used a
different image but otherwise it was quite fun to make and looked good too. I used a wide range of colours
but still relating to autumn and didn't use the dull colours but the bright and vibrant colours as some of the
images were all different.
My front and back cover will make my audience think that's a good image or is that edited? I had a little
challenge with what colour to use against the background. You can clearly see what is going on in this image
as it's over both pages. I have chosen a very playful text but still readable. Another thing is the title of the
fanzine which i came up by myself and added the little drawings to it as i thought it would look hood.
10. Audience Appeal
My audience for my work was 18+ for both genders. As it was for both genders, its sometimes
quite hard to get the right colour scheme to go without the audience thinking its only for one
gender. My fanzines theme was autumn which made it easier slightly as i could pick colour
schemes from the images i researched.I believe my audience will enjoy looking at my fanzine if
they are interested in that kind of photography or just generally the images.
My psycho graphic was emulator which means the audience will appeal to my fanzine as they will
want to try and produce similar work. The social status was C2DE this means anyone can have a
look at my work or even buy it if they wanted to.
12. Feedback One
1. What do you like about my fanzine?
I liked the vibrant images and the white background with the opacity turned down so you can slightly see the
background coming through. I also like the font that you used as it fits the theme of the fanzine well.
2. Are you interested in Autumn Photography?
I’m not that interested in it, although I have done some autumn photography for a previous project and the
images I collected weren't as good as yours
3. What improvements do you think are needed?
I think that you should have had more of a variety by possibly putting more than on image one a page or
making a collage
13. Feedback Two
1. What do you like about my fanzine?
I LOVE this fanzine. The front cover and back cover are brilliant. They are so nice to look at and the font and leaves
around the font are so effective and match the overall effect well. I think the images are really colorful and
contrasting colours of the warm oranges and yellows against the cold greens and blues are really pleasing to look at.
The introduction page is good. It gives a lot of information about the fanzine and explains the interviews.
2. Are you interested in Autumn Photography?
I like all photography, I’m not interested in it as a career choice and I am definitely not a professional but I love
nature and I enjoy trying to capture little bits of it that I find particularly pretty or interesting. Autumn is my favourite
season, I love the wide range of colours, the leaves, the cool weather that isn't too warm but isn't too cold. I love it.
3. What improvements do you think are needed?
Content page: The page numbers blend with the content for the page. If there was something separating the page
number from the content (such as : or - ) or if the page numbers were bold it would make it easier to read.
I think the quotes below each of the images are a little big and it takes away from the pictures.
14. Feedback Three
1. What do you like about my fanzine?
I really like the beautiful photography and how sharp the conkers and flowers look. The text fits in with the
autumn season you chose to do your fanzine on and the front and back cover is really eye catching.
2. Are you interested in Autumn Photography?
Yes, I do. There is something satisfying about photography in general, especially when its photos like your
front cover. I think so many people could relate to a good time when looking at that type of image.
3. What improvements do you think are needed?
More pages with nice photographs please! Some of your quotes/ headlines could have been used with the
background of the photograph instead of over a white border to make it blend in with the image.
