1. • In these shots in Mac Miller’s music video
“Live Free” the lyrics say “Microphone check
1, 2, 1, 2” and Mac is clearly seen portraying
the numbers in the lyrics with his fingers. This
is just one example of where Mac references
the video with the song.

2. • 2. This shot in the music video “Ridin’ Dirty” by
Chamillionaire is how a record company would
want their hip hop artist to be shown. He has red
lights around him which draw the attention
towards him, also he is wearing gold chains,
baggy clothes and a hat. This fits with the classic
hip hop genre and follows all conventions.

3. • 3. This shot from 50 Cent’s “Many Men”
illustrates the typical hip hop genre as it is in a
typical urban hip hop setting. It is also
portraying crime, even though not all of the
hip hop genre portrays crime it is still a
common convention that is shown in the
genre.

4. • 4. This screenshot is from the music video “Hero”
by Chad Kroeger, it shows a very clear intertextual
reference as he is singing about a hero and
spiderman is swinging on the buildings below.
This is probably one of the clearest intertextual
references I have ever seen and therefore a good
example for us to use.

5. • 5. This shot demonstrates good use of camera, I
captured it from Wiz Khalifa’s song “Roll Up”, its
use of camera angles is very effective; especially
this shot. We had just been watching the sky until
it started to fade into looking at Wiz from above,
so in some way the scenes are connected. This
clever idea was made possible by the camera
angle used.

6. • 6. Here is an example of effective use of lighting
in the hip hop genre, its from the music video of
the song “Big Body Benz” by Kidd Kidd. They have
four characters in this scene all wearing classic
hip hop genre style clothing, but they also have 4
large lights behind them, one light for each
person. This is effective as it allows us to see the
clothing, props etc. but it also makes it look much
more professional.

7. • 7. In Mac Miller’s music video of his song “Best Day
Ever” we felt he used mise-en-scene very effectively. As
you can see from his costume, props and location Mac
is clearly trying to fit with the onvention of a proper hip
hop video. The urban theme that is conveyed in this
scene is very clear to the viewer, from the hat and the
sunglasses, to the locations and the people in the
background.

8. • 8. On the left is a shot from Mac Miller’s
“Nikes On My Feet” music video. We watched
this video and saw how good the close up of a
“Nike” trainer looked and we felt we could use
this to our advantage in the video. This
demonstrates we have watched other videos
in the same genre to get ideas and be
influenced before we start to make our own.

9. • 9. We feel our music video directly relates to
Daft Punk’s music video of the song “Around
the World”. Although not as extreme as
“Around the World” we still used the same
technique of moving your body to the beat.
We got this idea from Daft Punk and utilised is
to fit with the urban/hip hop genre.
