Research into the Music Video Industry
- 1. RESEARCH INTO THE MUSIC VIDEO INDUSTRY
- 2. HOW ARE MUSIC VIDEOS MADE? The three stage process: 1) Pre-production (research, planning, storyboard, screenplay, budget/finance deciding etc.) 2) Production (creating & filming the video as a whole) 3) Post-production (editing, marketing, advertising, distribution, anything that needs to be done after the filming)
- 3. To sell the song by summoning a reaction in the audience, wherever that is happiness, sadness or fear, for example. To help the audience understand the lyrics of the song better by including visuals. This will also help them to remember it which increases the likelihood of them buying the single. To make use of any other talents the artist may have (eg dancing, horse riding, acrobatics…) To create as much exposure for the artist as possible to make them well known. This is useful for promotion. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A MUSIC VIDEO?
- 4. Madonna’s video for ‘Vogue’ was culturally important and famous for bringing a new dance move to the public; ‘vogue-ing’. It was actually initially black drag queens who invented the movements in Harlem but it was the pop icon that brought it to the masses. The dance sparked her popularity even more; commercially, the song remains one of Madonna's biggest international hits, topping the charts in over 30 countries. It became the world's best-selling single of 1990, selling over six million copies. EXAMPLE: VOGUE “to dance to music in such a way as to imitate the characteristic poses struck by a model on a catwalk”
- 5. He directed ‘Vogue’ and Justin Timberlake’s ‘Suit and Tie’, both of them being black and white throughout. This seems to be a signature style of his and it makes them very stylized and bold. - 6. He directs a lot of well known pop/ R&B artist’s videos, such as Nicki Minaj, Chris Brown and Justin Bieber. I believe he is so popular as a director because the style of his videos are very sleek, showing off bronzed skin with bright colours and lights, creating an atmosphere of ‘excitement’. He is very big on the voyeuristic treatment of the female body; a lot of his shots are from a males perspective sliding the gaze of the camera down a female’s body. I think that a good director is one who keeps their own personal style but also allows room for the artist’s style of video. Tilley does this well, for example, Kendrick Lamar’s videos are mostly in black and white so ‘Alright’ was still in his theme but also incorporated some of his trademarks, such as depicting the glamorous lifestyle artists are meant to have. - 8. HOW MUCH ARE MUSIC VIDEOS TO MAKE? Cheap but successful: ‘Lonely Boy’ by The Black Keys. -It is simply a single take of a man dancing and lip-syncing to the song in a motel. They had this whole other video planned but scrapped that and decided to use the clip. “Lonely Boy” was nominated for an MTV Video Music Award for Best Rock Video. It depends of how famous the artist is and of what genre as music videos in the US can go up to 500,00! Generally they are about 20,000 though. Research suggests that the amount spent on music video production has decreased in the last two decades
- 9. Very expensive video: ‘Bad’ by Michael Jackson in 1989. The production cost is thought to be between $2,200,000 and $4,384,913! The full music video comes in at 18 minutes and took 6 weeks to shoot. It was directed by Martin Scorsese and featured Jackson and his background dancers busting out some moves in an underground subway station with obvious references to West Side Story. It ended up being a billboard number one.
- 10. HOW DO AUDIENCES ACCESS MUSIC VIDEOS? Audiences usually go straight to YouTube to find the newest music videos nowadays. It’s also in partnership with ‘Vevo’ so most official music videos get uploaded to the account. People do still watch TV music channels for videos, such as MTV, 4Music and the Vevo channel.
