1. Media Evaluation โ Preliminary Task
For my preliminary task I chose to name my school based magazine โHaydon Weeklyโ, simply because it is a
catchy title that gets the general focus of the magazine across. As my target audience is focused towards the 6th
formers being the older side of the school, it is not necessary that it is kept simple, but it is a necessity that the
magazine attracts 6th formers and is interesting to read, specifically targeted to them. I stuck to a specific
colour scheme throughout the magazine.
In order to begin my preliminary task, I had to photograph specific things around the school that will appeal to
my target audience. I took photographs of the school itself and activities occurring within the school. Once I had
taken the photographs I began to design my magazines.
I selected the best images out of the photographs I had taken and fitted them accordingly and specifically where
they should belong in the magazine. I chose an image of 2 6th formers and the front of Haydon School as my
opening page background as I believe it fitted well with the target audience of the magazine being 6th formers
and also the angle at which I took the photo fitted well for a creative background, attracting readers. I then
focused on creating a colour scheme that would fit with the focus of the magazine and occur throughout. I
deliberately placed the Haydon School qualities on the front page along with information about the 6th form
canteen to interest the audience in the magazine. There is also a section on the front which informs the readers
what is inside the magazine. The date the magazine was made, the issue number and pricing is stated towards
the bottom of the magazine and a barcode is also placed on the opposite side.
For the contents page I focused on sticking to the colour scheme and keeping it plain, yet effective. I found the
simplicity if the contents page made it seem more realistic. I placed images from around the school to make the
page more appealing to readers and also gave titles of the articles along with subtitles so the readers are aware
what the focus of each different topic will be about.
If I were to improve my magazine I would make my front page more realistic by adding back drops to more text
enabling it to stand out and playing around with font size and position along with adding more detail to the text
itself. I would also add more relevant features to the front page to fill it up more. To improve the contents page
I would add more images and place them more efficiently with different sizes and borders etc.
