2. As soon as we were introduced to AS level media, we were
required to complete a preliminary task in the style of a
school news magazine. I was slightly unaware of what
programs to use and how I would create my magazine, as I
am new to A-level media. It was exciting to get stuck in
straight away and gave me a vague idea of the programs we
will be using when completing our music magazine! The
software I used was In Design. I found this software slightly
difficult but with the tutorials to follow, I soon got the hang
of it and completed the task with small difficulty.
3. I titled my magazine ‘Haydon Weekly’. I decided
to use ‘weekly’ to be slightly original rather than
something simple like ‘Haydon News’. My title
was in a basic, old-fashioned font, but stood out
against the canteen main photo. I placed my
title on the top of the title page, as it fitted in
perfectly with the photo displayed!
4. On my front cover I decided to use a image of the school
canteen as throughout my life at Haydon this was
probably the most remember able room! This was the
place where I could relax, have fun, and laugh with my
friends, and although the magazine is to inform, I think
it’s important to keep it suitable for the target audience,
(Haydon students). By putting a picture of a positive
place in Haydon school as my title page, this would make
it more advertising to the target audience, whereas if the
title was a not so exciting place, e.g. a plain corridor or a
classroom, this would automatically make the audience
think the magazine is maybe boring and dull.
5. With regards to the headlines on my title, I decided to
keep them short, bold, and to the point so if anyone was
in a rush they would be able to read the titles quickly and
briefly, and still gain an understanding as to what was
inside the magazine. The topics on my front page have
been made relevant to the target audience, (children),
stating factors such as sports day, prom, and results
which the students would’ve took part in!
I decided to put a small price on my magazine as the
profit made could’ve gone towards things such as school
equipment, or even a charity. With charging 50p per
magazine, I feel this is a reasonable amount that could
even be found in the bottom of a large blazer pocket.
6. My contents page was kept with bland colours, as I
found it difficult to find a correct colour scheme to
match with the Haydon stag, and the images I used.
Although the colours were bland, I feel that the images I
used brightened up the contents page. I continued with
the same font to make my magazine flow a lot more. It
is important to make a magazine fit together and flow
as if it were to be a completely different change of
media, then it would be far more difficult to entice the
audience as it wouldn’t look right or follow a particular
theme.

8. Finally, on my contents page I decided to use
action shots which come across as far more
natural, rather than people posing for photos.
Moreover in all my photos I made sure students
looked like they were enjoying themselves,
laughing and most importantly having fun at
school and enjoying their time at Haydon. I used
an image of two sixth form students working
hard, a group of students laughing in the
canteen and two students walking up some
stairs. It was really important to have my photos
taken in a happy environment but also a
focused, as this reflects upon Haydon in a
positive manor.
