Clifford Geertz s Definition Of Religion
3) Clifford Geertz s definition of religion is an accurate reflection of the basic tenet of religion.
Geertz argues that religion is based solely on the concepts of symbols and the impacts that symbols
have on the practitioners of the religion. Geertz demonstrates that symbols give a meaning to life.
The symbols give practitioners something to hold onto at all times. Geertz s definition of symbols
and their impacts fits the use of symbols in many religious practices including the religions of the
Huichol Indians and the Amish sect of the Protestant Christian church. In the first part of the Geertz
s definition, he states that religionis a system of symbols which acts... . All religions are made up
of symbols. In the Amish church, the symbols include the baptism and living in a traditional way.
For the Amish, baptism symbolize[s] a commitment to both God and fellow believers (Robinson,
2015). By being baptized, the adult member of the community is making a lifelong commitment
to live a simple life for God in the way of the Amish. For the Huichol, Ramon states, Now I will
tell you of the maize and the peyote and the deer... They are our life. They are ourselves. (189). For
the Huichol, the symbols represent a unity complex that are the centerfold of their religion.
Religion is made up of symbols, and the Amish Christian and Huichol religious complexes
demonstrate that concept. In the second part of the definition, Geertz states that symbols establish

Rocket Boys Character Analysis
During the 1950s, the American family structure was strongly patriarchal in which the man of
the house went to work to provide for his family, his wife stayed at home to take care of the
house and kids, and the kids were expected to go to school and be very well disciplined and
respectable. Even in the coal towns of Central Appalachia this familyorientation was prevalent, as
such the children of the miners were set too standards that would carry this structure on for many
decades. When a child finds that they do not meet the expectations that are levied upon him/her
by their parents and the rest of the community their life is made difficult as they struggle to find
who they truly are and still try to live up to what others expect. This is exactly the case that
Homer Sonny Hickam Jr. finds himself in. Through his memoir, Rocket Boys, Homer Hickam
retells the story of his youth as a boy struggling through life trying to become who he wants to be
while his father tries to push him to be who he is expected to be.
In the small coal towns of West Virginia, the youth was expected to primarily do one of two
things. Which one you were expected of depended upon your gender, if you were male you were
expected to graduate high school, maybe, and then go into the mines to dig coal like your father
and his father before him. If you were female you were expected to graduate high school and then
marry a miner and raise his kids and care for his house just like your mother and her mother before
her. For Sonny though we know from the very first page that his parents had opposing ideas of
what was expected of him as he writes, I didn t know that my hometown was at war with itself
over its children and that my parents were locked in a kind of bloodless combat over how my
brother and I would live our lives (Hickam 1). Just a few pages later it is discovered that his mother
wanted Sonny to pursue something other than mining and exactly what boys of Coalwood were
expected to do; Almost all of the grown up boys I knew had either joined the military services or
gone to work in the mine. I had no idea what the future held in store for me. The only thing I knew
for sure was my mother did not see me going into the mine (Hickam

Gender Roles In The Dispossessed
In Ursula K. Le Guin s utopian novel The Dispossessed, gender roles are one of the main theme
in the novel. The author uses two planets, Anarres and Urras to represent the different form of
society, to understand gender roles. In Urras, which is an Earth like world, women are treated as
if owned by men. However, in Anarres, a person s sex is irrelevant to the society, therefore there
was an equality of gender. Le Guin s purpose for this was to make her audience subconsciously
think about how society view gender roles by uses the affinity of a visitor, shevek to an Earth like
world to illustrate the disunity of the Earth like customs. By comparing the two twin planets, Le
Guin uses gender rolein the novel to critique our society by using

Settings in to Kill a Mockingbird
Maycomb County had recently been told that it had nothing to fear but fear itself . This
statement made by Scout at the beginning of Harper Lee s To Kill a Mockingbird shows that
Maycomb is a town in which the fear of change is rife. Lee s choice of Maycomb as a setting,
developed through narrative point of view and characterisation was vital to the text as it helped to
develop the theme of prejudiceand the consequences which result from the fixed attitudes of an
insular town.
One of the ways in which Lee presents Maycomb is through the fluctuating narrative point of view
between he mature adult Scout and the naГЇve child narrator. The narration of Scout as an adult is
objective and is suggestive of the opinions of the people who live ... Show more content on

Beautiful things floated round in his dreamy head.
The choice of a small insular town in which to set a novel about racial prejudice helped Lee to
develop the idea that Persecution comes from people who are prejudiced. At first, the prejudices
displayed by the citizens of Maycomb seem benign and irrelevant. However, in this small
community these prejudices soon culminate into something much more serious: racial prejudice.
This prejudice is displayed in the trail of Tom Robinson in which the defence lawyer refers to Tom
as boy , while politely questioning white witnesses. This causes Dill to start crying at the unfairness
and injustice that is created by racism saying, it was just him I couldn t stand .
Maycomb also serves in showing how the persecution of innocent mockingbirds can result from
racial prejudice. Maycomb s highly defined social class system, in which blacks are considered
to be lesser equals, is the reason for the persecution of Tom Robinson. Robinson s persecution
came not only because he was black, but because he broke one of Maycomb s social mores by
feeling sorry for and helping Mayella Ewell You felt sorry for her? You felt sorry . The notion
that a black could be in a position to feel sympathy for a white was abhorrent for Maycomb s
citizens and this is why they allowed and indeed endorsed the persecution of an innocent man. Tom
Robinson s death highlights the failings of

Review Of Vampire Bats
1.Vampire bats give blood to unrelated vampire bats for several reasons. Among the reasons are
the cost sharing of blood, the benefit of sharing blood and the probability that the bats that were
given blood will in turn reciprocate and give blood to other bats at a later date. The cooperative
equilibria in bloodsharing among bats means that the sharing of blood will occur if the benefits
of sharing blood multiplied by the probability that blood sharing will be beneficial in the future is
greater than the cost of sharing blood. If a bat shares blood with another bat (even an unrelated
bat), the bat that is the recipient is expected to donate blood to other bats at a larger rate than it
received at a later time.
A donor bat will give blood to a bat that has not had a meal so that this bat can have the opportunity
to hunt again, giving an increased chance that it will reciprocate to another bat that has not had a
meal, enabling the roost to maintain survival. In the event that a recipient bat does not reciprocate
in the future, that bat will not be donated to if it needs it in the future, thus allowing for recipient
bats to be donor bats in the future as needed.

Postoperative Pain And Anxiety Essay
Analyzing the Effect of Music on Postoperative Pain and Anxiety
The effect of music on postoperative pain and anxiety was studied on an orthopedic unit in a
central Florida hospital (Allred, Byers, Sole, 2010). The authors clearly identified the problem
many total knee arthroplasty patients experience after surgery is moderate to severe postoperative
pain and increased anxiety. Throughout the introduction of the study, it was stressed the importance
and need for this research to be conducted. The authors discussed the effects of inadequately treated
pain and how health care professionals, including nursing, should make it a priority in a patient s
treatment plan (Allred et al., 2010). Several references were provided supporting the issue ... Show

The researchers included both a hypothesis and research questions. They stated a hypothesis,
however it is a research hypothesis versus a null hypothesis. A research hypothesis explains there is
correlation between two or more variables. A null hypothesis is a classification of hypotheses that
states there is no connection between the independent and dependent variables. Statistical testing is
performed to determine whether the statement is acceptable or not. Whereas the research question
is an analysis statement detailing the variables and population of the specified research study
(Adams, 2015). The hypothesis, the authors were hoping to prove, was whether the use of music
would reduce pain and anxiety in postoperative pain in a particular patient population during a
defined time frame (Allred et al., 2010). An example of a null hypothesis for this study would state
music would have no effect on postoperative pain in a particular patient population during a defined
time frame. There were four research questions the researchers attempted to answer. Three of the
four questioned the effect of music on the patient s pain, anxiety, and physiologic parameters.
However the fourth question pertained to the impact of music on the amount of opioids taken from
the beginning of the intervention until six hours later (Allred et al., 2010). The clinicians had not
mentioned this component of the study before

Louis Riel s Last Words Before His Execution
I have nothing but my heart, I have given it long ago to my country. These are Louis Riel s last
words before his execution. Two themes that have been debated is whether Louis Riel is a
traitor or hero to the MГ©tis. There have been many controversial figures throughout Canada s
history, but Louis Riel is one of the most controversial figure. His perspective on how he dealt
with manner is still debated today. A key aspect discussed today is why Riel is a hero to his people;
the MГ©tis. Louis Rielhad once recognized the turmoil the MГ©tis had to face, through this Riel
proved that one must take actions in order to achieve a person s right. Firstly, Louis Riel is a
savior due to his actions to defend the Roman Catholic faith and French and... Show more content

Moreover, the government s insufficiency caused Riel to act accordingly. Earlier, it was mentioned
that the Canadian government was not authorized to take legal action until December of 1869.
Though this was clearly recognized by the government, they sent surveyors in June of 1869 for
settlers to live there. The government broke their own laws, hence it proves that Riel, due to the
government s flawed intentions, had to enforce his rule, by stepping on the chains. Unit Two: The
Development of Western Canada, on page 36 highlights that in 1882, surveyors came to the MГ©tis
peoples North West Settlements to examine the land once more. The MГ©tis acted quickly and
sent 15 petitions to the Canadian government for the rights of their land, none of which were
answered. Once again, the government was incapable. The government could have prevented all
the troubles, but due to their insufficiency and flawed system, they let the surveyors come onto the
land. In addition to this, the government had signed many treaties with the MГ©tis. But, the
government, yet again, didn t keep their word and didn t follow the laws of giving them what the
treaties had promised. To conclude, Riel was compelled to take arms. The lack of control, caused
the government to spend millions and ended in destruction. Flashback Canada on page 196 stated,

Analysis On Key Value Stores Essay
Analysis on Key Value Stores
Introduction
We have come into the era of Big Data. As (Atikoglu, Xu, Frachtenberg, Jiang, Paleczny, 2012)
stated, the need for efficiently storing large scale data in scale out companies at lower cost is
dramatically increasing. Therefore Key Value Store has occurred in popularity. (Fitzpatrick,
2004) has clarified that KV stores plays an essential role in lots of huge websites such as
Facebook, Twitter, GitHub and Amazon. This paper reviewed 6 popular key value stores and
distinguished primary features, performance and availability of each. The six systems are
Hyperdex, Dynamo, SILT, Project Voldemort used by LinkedIn, Berkeley DB and LevelDB used
by Google.
A key value store database has a set of keys and values, and each value is associated with a key.
The implementation of key value store database is actually a distributed hash table (Stonebraker, 04
/2010). Key Value Stores(KV), which are normally known as a model of NoSQL databases, are
widely deployed for data operation and management in purpose of enhancing Internet services due
to better scalability, higher efficiency and more availability than existing relational databases
systems (Wang, et al., 2014). Because KV stores sacrifice relation model in exchange for fast
writing, and they are often featured with simple methods like put() , delete() and get() .
LevelDB
LevelDB is a very lightweight, simple key value store with limited operational abilities. LevelDB

The Symbolism Of Color In Richard Wright s Native Son
What is black, white, and red all over? A sunburned zebra, of course! These three colors also
describe events that occur in Richard Wright s novel Native Son. While a great deal of
importance is placed on the color black, white remains present throughout the novel. The colors
combine in many instances to lend great significance to characterization and setting. Through
symbolism, Wright uses the colors black and white to illustrate the major problem of the era: the
separation of black and white Americans. Furthermore, Wright utilizes communist red to
emphasize the novel s overwhelming black and white imagery. From the first pages of the novel,
Bigger is associated with the color black. The most obvious is his skin color, as well as the fact
that most of the action of the plot is located in the Black Belt of South Chicago. The Black... Show

When red is present, it is never associated with a good situation. The color first appears as Bigger
watches the sunset from his bedroom window, thinking about his interview with the Dalton s. Then
when talking with Gus, Bigger claims that whenever her thinks of white people he gets a sensation
that a fire is burning in his stomach. This comment boldly foreshadows the upcoming events.
Next, when Bigger enters the Dalton household, the white cat glares at him with its red eyes.
After meeting the Dalton s, Bigger meets Mary whom he refers to as a hot kind of girl (36).
Mary also has bright red lips that differ from her milky skin and jet black hair. Also, the
contrasting image of the white bones, in the black ashes in the flaming furnace continues to show
the overlap of the three colors. After burning Mary, Bigger lights up a white cigarette and then
runs off to Bessie. Thinking that she is going to be a hassle in the process, Bigger kills Bessie
with a red brick. Last, Bigger signs the ransom note he creates Red, trying to create the illusion that

Smacking Persuasive Speech
Smacking children has been around for centuries; however the purpose of it has altered from the
beginning to now. It started as a technique to discipline your children but now days are used
largely by teenager parents, who have lower patients and low self control. I m strongly against
this concept of smacking your children for discipline, it s disgraceful to think that people in this
century still use the assistance of this conception. It s hard to believe, but sometimes children
smacking is only done to achieve satisfaction, for example an angry dad from work might come to
home just to realize that one of his children has broken something in the house, the anger from
work and this broken object might just add up to equal the dad losing his... Show more content on

This is very strong opinion and has very depth meaning, I believe that the point that he was
trying to get across was that once you violate or smack your children, it influence the child to
think that violence is the way to solve any problem and this is not the way you want to bring up
your children. Statistics shows that 69 precent of Australia parents still find the use for smacking
their children, if we think about this logically, 69 precents of Australian children s possibly have
adapted to this this idea which shows dark future for the violence in Australia. I have witnessed
this adaptive behaviour myself, one of my cousin went through traumatizing child hood. He was
smacked at least once a day, I believe that his parents were too violent with him and this lead to,
my cousin getting in countless fights in schools. When parents smack their children, they don t
realize the long term consequence of it, which is exactly what happened with my cousin s
parents. Children smacking is also illegal in most countries, its considered assault, if a parent was
convicted of this and was dragged to court, and the children would have to suffer some much in
such a small age and might be forced to change his or her

Confucius Vs Vietnamese Culture
Presently there are countless cultures in the world. In the midst of all these cultures, I decided to
pick the Vietnamese culture for my assignment. Similar to other East Asian countries, Vietnamese
culture is strongly influenced by Confucianism, a simpler way of life, and the connection within
family member are often reflected by the values embedded in the ideology (Vu, Huy Q., Rook,

Vietnamese culture, and few similarities. I believed that the boundaries in the Vietnamese culture

Rook, Karen S. (2013)). The division of labor between the parents impacts their parenting style and
the socialization of their children (Vu, Huy Q. Rook, Karen S. (2013)).
Discrepancies
Between parents and children, differences in acculturation are a common occurrence in immigrant
families including, the Vietnamese culture (Vu, Huy Q., Rook, Karen S. (2013)). When Vietnamese
immigrated to Western societies, the ethics and manners were incorporated, and was much easier
for the children to focus on then parents (Vu, Huy Q. Rook, Karen S. (2013)). Due to the children
finding the ethics quicker and without difficulty Vietnamese children begin to wander from the
traditional values causing struggles between the two generations (Vu, Huy Q. Rook, Karen S.
(2013)). Intergenerational conflict may perhaps have more dominant with parents and daughters
rather than sons (Vu, Huy Q. Rook, Karen S. (2013)). There is a solution with acculturation and
intergeneration tensions unfortunately, it has received little attention to date (Vu, Huy Q. Rook,
Karen S. (2013)).
Social Spaces
Immigrant youth are able to interact with their peers in school, which includes various mixed
gender settings (Stritikus, T., Nguyen, D. (2007)). Parents have a tendency to have stern rules
about their child s actions separate from school making school not only a place intended for
learning, but a place for social interaction as well

Evangelical And Neo-Orthodox Movements
The modern world saw three theological movements representing various view on the nature and
authority of the scriptures. The Liberal, Evangelical and Neo Orthodox movements all attempted
to define what was true in relations to God, Jesus, and the scriptures and how it should be applied
to the Christian s life. Each movement also had their own view on the history of the scriptures and
JesusChrist.
Those supporting the Liberal theological movement felt the Church had been corrupted by
philosophical additions and sought to make Christianity relevant to the current times searching how

Examples Of Inequality In To Kill A Mockingbird
The world is a mosaic of all different cultures and colors, and either these differences can clash,
causing a problem, or combine to make something uniquely beautiful. When people clash, it
creates war and destruction, leaving people distraught, but when these very same people choose

way of living and different rules. Some cultures may not support the combination of white and
black while others would kill to see it. These societies all over the world deem certain practices
and people to be acceptable, whether it is an established caste system or a simple friend group in

Laramie, Wyoming is known as a mostly conservative, republican party majority, which is why
there were no hate crime laws that had to deal with sexual orientation or gender identity.
Republicans typically were Christians meaning they were against homosexuality and believed it
was very wrong. The Laramie officials did not pass any law for about ten years, which showed the
Laramie community that their own government did not approve of homosexuals. The government

This bill was called Resolution Seventeen, a bill defining marriage in Wyoming as being
exclusively between a man and woman (Kaufman 163). Connolly passionately fought against such
a piece of legislation arguing homosexuals should be able to be able to marry as well. This did not
go as well since the Laramie legislation consisted of mainly conservative republicans refusing to
allow anything, but the traditional style of marriage. Republicans argue,
since the beginning of civilization, in every known society, governments have recognized a
marriage between a man and a woman because it provides the next generation outstanding citizens
and is the only means of melding two sexes into a stronger and more complete whole (Kaufman
164).
This political party is very strict to their views and use history to show how a traditional marriage
is the only logical way to continue a working society. Republican believe since homosexuals are

Native American Mascot Controversy
Native American mascot controversy Chiefs, Braves, Redskins, and more have been the mascots
for schools, and sports teams for over 60 years. Countless universities throughout the U.S withhold
Native American logos, whom many take offense to, while others believe it s an honor. Current
Events magazine (Doc 1), Oregonlive.com article (Doc 5), and Dan Snyder (video) all come to a
consensus that Native American mascots represent and glorify rather than slur and insult. With
this, The best approach to this situation is to allow the sports teams and schools to choose their

Low Velocity Impact And Impact After Compression Of Cork...
Low Velocity Impact and Impact after Compression in Cork Based Composite material
ABSTRACT:
Experiments are carried out in the investigation to find out the role of cork as an ideal core
material, which is used as a shield plate in the front of land military vehicles to verify the energy
absorption and damage tolerance. Composite materials are used in various industries these days due
to its high strength to weight ratio putting them into light weight applications. Vacuum Assisted
Resin Infusion Method is chosen to manufacture the laminate. Specimens are cut according to
American Society for Testing and Materials Standards are used. Low velocity impact is carried
out on the specimens to observe the energy absorption capabilities of the specimens with two
different testing variables i.e., energy level and amount of the viscoelastic material. Afterwards,
Compression after Impact test is carried out to study the Damage tolerance of the impacted
specimen. The study of all the results from the above tests shows us the energy absorption and
damage tolerance with the presence of cork as a core material. Further studies can be done in
different energy levels, different viscoelastic materials and also different fibres and resins.
INTRODUCTION:
Recent years, high modulus and high strength was the main concern of the development of advance
performance of the composite materials. High strength is not only the objective but also the
performance of the material along with ability

Southern Renaissance Influence
The Southern Renaissance was a time during the 1920s and 1930s where there was a change in
southern literature. Even though most of the Southern Renaissance took place during the 1920s
and 30s it was still affected by WWII. The Southern Renaissance is important because it saw a
bunch of new southern writers and affected southern literature. People say that the Southern
renaissance ended before WWII but it actually continued after WWII and was Affected by it.
One example of how WWII had an effect on the Southern Renaissance is ...the coming of the
second World War and its aftermath not only confirmed those changes but it created a modern
day south that in numerous respects seemed to bear little relationship to the community in
which the leading writers of the Southern Renaissance had been born a half century or so earlier
(Rubin 463). This quote shows what the second world war did to the south. The Southern
Renaissance and WWII also had effects on segregation and black novelists. One example of the
effect the renaissance had on segregation is the period in which it emerged saw the south
decidedly on the defensive in its efforts to stave off challenges to segregation (Abadie 14). A
good example of how the renaissance affected black novelists is the depression in the 1930s and
World War II in the 1940s are central events in American social history. Yet southern black novels
during these two decades rarely do more than hint at the effects either event had on the lives of

Essay On The Alchemist
You can always turn a bad kisser into a good one, Laura Prepon. Santiago, the main character of
Paulo Coelho s The Alchemist leads a modest and ordinary life as a shepherd. Santiago travelled
constantly, exploring the Andalusian terrain. In his travels, Santiago met a woman who interpreted
his dreams, and told him his treasure would lie in Egypt at the pyramids. However, Santiago
believed that the dream interpreter was a phony, and he continued to herd his sheep. Soon after, he
exchanged words with the King of Salem, and Santiago was once again told to venture to Egypt in
order to find his treasure. After careful consideration, Santiago sells his precious sheep and begins
his journey. An alchemist, somebody who turns lead... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The crystal merchant had few customers, but once the crystal was cleaned, a larger crowd was
attracted to his storefront. Santiago would receive a much needed meal, as well as a job offer.
Freshly cleaned crystal attracted many customers, which caused the crystal merchant to offer
Santiago a full time position, with pay. Like an alchemist, Santiago went from being in poverty,
to being successful. Santiago also turned a negative into a positive for the crystal merchant. The
crystal merchant s shop did not appear inviting to potential customers, but Santiago rectified it,
which in turn, caused the shop to receive more customers and generate a greater profit. Santiago
is a metaphorical alchemist. He turns the worst into the best, just as an alchemist turns base
metals into gold. Santiago made a reasonable sum of money working for the crystal merchant,
and decided it was time to abandon his job to continue his search for his treasure. Along the way,
he was halted by a tribal war in the desert and forced to stay in an oasis. During his visit he met a
young woman named Fatima. After only a few interactions, Santiago decides he wants to marry
this woman, I came to tell you just one thing, the boy said. I want you to be my wife. I love you

Examples Of Visual Persuasion And Propaganda In Mass Media

Visual persuasion and propaganda in mass media: example of Putin s covers in Time magazine
As we have seen throughout the course visual communication techniques play significant role in
our life since it touches upon almost every sphere starting from social aspects to political ones.
These techniques are not important per se but rather there is a particular purpose they seek. One of
these purposes is persuasion. According to Lester (p. 77): communication is fundamentally and
essentially a matter of persuasion, attitude change, behavior modification, and socialization through
the transmission of information . Images are an essential part of the visual persuasion, which
modern mass media incorporates. As we have observed in our readings this visual persuasion can
take different forms in order to be the most effective and to achieve its goal. Lester states that: most
information, whether factual or not, is communicated through the mass media. More and more that
information relies on the emotional appeal inherent in visual presentations (ibid). Moreover:
pictures have always been the surest way of conveying an idea (ibid). One of the brightest examples
is the covers of different newspapers and journals that not only demonstrate the certain attitude and
opinion toward particular topics but also try to make the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

1987 study showed that apart from love and passion red color symbolized danger and strength

Corruption In The Colbert Report
Plato, Marx, and Rousseau all speak on the corruption of society and how the world surrounding it
really is. One of the commonly seen themes throughout the texts is the idea of corruption.
Corruption centers around one in power gaining advancement, often through bribery, by fraudulent
behavior, either politically or socially. Socrates speak on tyrants as an example of this. A tyrant
said to be someone who, Lives lordly...and lawlessly, and being himself a king...a tyrant leads a
State, to the performance of any reckless deed. (Plato) These ideas of corruptionare also seen
throughout the videos on The Colbert Report, by using the concept of Super PACs as an example.
When looking at the reading one can imagine the corruption of that time and it is easier for one to
brush it off as something in the past. The Colbert Report show the corruption of today when it
comes to politics, which in this case make this topic hit a lot closer to home for many of us.
Plato, Marx, and Rousseau have all spoke on ways that we are blinded by trying to understand a
system of government that, due to having money and power over us, seem to be on our side but is...

Heraclitus Metaphors
Heraclitus said, We can never step into the same river twice, for different water is ever flowing
(12). In this maxim, Heraclitus is comparing a river to one s life. As a river continues to flow and
change, time continues to pass by, changing lives as well. He uses this metaphor in order to
emphasize the constant nature of change. Montaigne confirms this maxim in his writings through
the use of various examples and metaphors. Firstly, Montaigne writes about the movement of time
and how it never stops flowing. He says, time is a mobile thing, which appears as in a shadow,
together with matter, which is ever running and flowing, without ever remaining stable or
permanent (Montaigne 555). Moments in life are never permanent, as time never... Show more

Circumstances are always changing as time passes, which can have large effects on various
things such as the reliability of a plan. As time passes, circumstances change, causing something
that might have seemed viable in the past, seem not as viable in the present. This proves that
change is ever present and can impact even the simplest of things. Similarly, Montaigne writes
all judgements in gross are loose and imperfect in order to showcase how even ideas can never
be perfect and constant because they are always changing (Montaigne 876). Ideas will always be
unfixed and flawed for time will always change depending on various circumstances, once again
confirming how change impacts everything, both tangible and intangible. In addition to examples,
Montaigne uses metaphors to confirm the constant change in this world. He writes about a
soldier who was carrying a load of wood that his hands became stiff with cold and stuck to his
burden, so that they remained there attached and dead, having separated from his arms (Montaigne
875). The arms are a representation of one s life, while the load is all the obstacles one has to bear

Metal Death Trap Research Paper
Metal Death Traps How would you feel if someone told you whether you live, or die was
predetermined by a computer program? Self driving cars are becoming more of a reality every day
and the struggle of what it should do in an emergency has become a constant debate of ethics and
morality. English philosopher John Stuart, author of Utilitarianism, believes people should seek the
greatest good of their actions. Meanwhile, German philosopher Immanuel Kant, supports
deontology (the idea that the only true moral action is that which is made absent of any self desire
and will not cause any foreseen harm to another) in his book The Metaphysics of Morals. Although
many people may believe that it is in the best interest for cars to attempt to swerve... Show more

Some people may argue that the value a few lives supersedes the value of the one in the vehicle,
but that idea is denounced by the fact that one cannot determine what would happen if the car is
to swerve. The car could possibly crash in to a building injuring many more inside or cause a
major accident on the road where many more might die. As Mill puts it in his book According to
the greatest happiness principle as I have explained it, The ultimate end. . . ., for the sake of
which all other things are desirable (whether we are considering our own good or that of other
people) is an existence as free as possible from pain and as rich as possible in enjoyments (Mill).
In short, the ideology of utilitarianism means we should seek the least harm possible. This can
only be done if we allow the car to do what cars are designed to do and drive forward. The only
true guarantee that can be made by these vehicles is that the rider will be treated with the upmost
care. Anything outside of this is an uncontrollable variable that may cause more harm than

The Black community s ears are attuned to the sounds of the salon the drone of clippers,

How Does Masculinity Affect Women
We often see women affected by social norms and negatively represented but it s always good to
look at the other side of the spectrum. Masculinity can deeply affect and cause issues in boys and
young men. These issues are mainly emotional damages and the definition of what being a man is.
On of the ways to fix this would be to better represent masculinityand widen the spectrum of what a
manreally is. First of all, the definition of what being a man is a central issue for young males.
Paul Theroux talks about always liking being a man in his essay, Being a Man. He points out that,

stuff or they talk about new version... Tears welled up in her eyes. I don t have anything to talk

This shows the pressures of masculinity on young males. The constraints of conversations has
brought an eleven year old into tears about not fitting in. This shows a small spectrum of the
psychological issues and damages on males. Paul Theroux also goes on to speak about the causes
of the psychological problems males face in Being a Man, he claims that, how can one think about
men without considering the terrible ambition of manliness?... It is a hideous and crippling lie, it
not only insists on difference and connvies out superiority, it is also by its nature

The Yellow Wallpaper as a Guide To Insanity and Madness
The Yellow Wallpaper as a Guide To Insanity
There comes John, and I must put this away he hates to have me write a word (p659). As evident
by the above quote, Gilman places the narrator of The Yellow Wallpaper as secluded as she
could be; she is placed in a large house, surrounded only by her husband and by little help
(Jennie), when it is unfortunately clear that her relationship with her husband is based on distance
and misunderstanding: It is so hard to talk with John about my case, because he is so wise, and
because he loves me so (p 663). Gilman further confines her narrator as it becomes clear that the
poor soul has absolutely no one to talk to; that is, no one who can understand her. The narrator is

Any other perspective that she could have reached (such as her husband or hired help) is biased
from the core! That is, biased from the narrator s point of view. In some cases of mental illness the
subject questions its own reality, yet the narrator is positively sure about her own.
The narrator does not even waste her time on trying to get a second or third opinion. She knows
what she sees, and she sees a woman figure behind the horrific wallpaper.
Her tone is rather calm for such a discovery, and that is the second aspect of her tone; she is fully
comfortable with her imaginary world; far more comfortable than she is in her real world.
Throughout the story, Gilman holds us attentive and sympathetic due to the specific positioning of
the narrator; the narrator confides in us and us alone. The whole story is told as journal entries and
personal thoughts. In reading the journal entries we fell privileged and intimate. Yet it is the
personal thoughts that actually hold us captive in the realm of lunacy, a literal invitation into an
insane mind in which we have no other option rather than actually seeing the twisted world that she
sees, through her own eyes.
To further establish the role of the narrator, we must now clarify the meaning of the story. The
latter objective becomes easily feasible, for Gilman s Why I Wrote The Yellow Wallpaper leaves
little place for argument. It was not intended

Supply Of Good Quality Electrical Power
The customer must be satisfied that a solution to his problem is found getting a secure, safe and
continuous supply of good quality electrical power. The main concerns related to the supplied
power were: that voltage levels were too low and variations too high (i.e. not within В±5%
tolerance), regular powerfailures, and phase reversal issues on certain days. To address these
concerns the initial plan was to determine if the claims made by the customer were true and then
find ways in which to first address it without the least inconvenience to the customer. I sat down
with the Head of Network and Plant Performance and worked out that I needed to arrange for:
Voltage levels to be measured and adjusted it if possible (by adjusting tap positions on transformers,
switching in of Capacitor banks or voltage regulators), remove unnecessary loading on supply
feeders to the Taung Substation and reconfigure the networkwhere possible to provide alternative
paths for load to flow, measure the three phase load balance and reconfigure connected loads to
provide an even spread of loads across the three phases. If these actions couldn t resolve the
problems then proceed with recruiting a team of subject matter experts to conduct more detailed
investigation to ascertain the physical condition of the Taung Village 11kV feeder, then verify and
record what hardware was used in the construction of the feeder and also the standard to which the
structures were build and the hardware used.

Unauthorized Practice of Law Essay
In order to complete this assignment we must first recognize what Unauthorized Practice of
Law is when it comes to paralegals. There is no set definition on what UPL is but as a paralegal
there are guidelines to go by. Some ways they can violate the practice of law would be an
individual holding themselves as an attorney when they are paralegals, giving legal advice as an
attorney would, or representing clients in a court of law. All of the previous are violations and
can be subject to several disciplinary actions [ (Unauthorized Practice of Law, 2010) ]. It has

Now this one is a bit trickier than the other. To give proper advice would be giving legal advice.
Mrs. Smith would have to know the ins and outs of divorce when it comes to adultery and Polly
legally cannot supply the answer. Once again, Polly has the responsibility to let Mrs. Smith
know that she is not a lawyer and she can t give any legal advice. Information that involves the
grounds for any law suit of any matter is considered legal advice. Although Mrs. Smith may feel
that a simple yes or no will not hurt Polly, it will. One thing Polly can do that is not UPL is to
advise Mrs. Smith to seek legal representation [ (Orlik, 2007) ]. This action can save Polly a lot
of hassles and the chance of getting disciplined. Now the reasoning behind prohibiting the
unauthorized practice of law is not to hurt lawyers and anyone legally practicing law. These
were put into place to help from personally damaging cases and individuals alike. What if you
were given advice and used it to help with your case. Then come to find out that this advice or
information was not at all correct and cost you your case. You would be very adamant to return to
the individual to find out what had happened. Then you also find out that this person was not
legally able to practice law in any manner. You would be furious and would want this person to pay
for his/her actions. This is an example of why it is very important why someone that is not

The Sixties Countercultures
The Sixties were a time of major change in United States society. We had reached beyond
modernity with technology, consumerism, and the youth leading us to the suburbs of discontent.
According to Hugh Heclo, There came surge of personal discontent and social self questioning that
would constitute the great awakening of the 1960s. He goes on to argue that people no longer
accepted the status quo and from the counter culture groups we have studied in class this is
evident. People were more concerned with morals and institutional openness in order to create a
better vision of the world than the traditional ideals of the Cold Warera. Heclos main argument is
that this vision is the legacy of the Sixties is the tendency for peoples to question their governments
practices, in the name of a more egalitarian society. I agree with his assertions and can see proof in
the Yippee movement, Students for a democratic society, and Young Americans for Freedom. The
counterculture shows how action was taken to restructure the government in their own way in order
to help the newly oppressed. While the groups do not exist in the same way today, the actions they
took made a lasting impression on the fabric of society and government. The Yippies were radical
and wanted a complete rejection and reformulation of the American system. They were unwilling to

Kawaii Research Paper
Many Westerners perceive Japan as weird. While many aspects of its culture differ considerably
from that of the United States and Europe, it is this difference that while weird to some is
fascinating and even tantalizing to others. One of the most apparent of the cultural phenomena
unique to Japan is the idea of kawaii. Kawaii is a difficult term to translate into English, but the
term celebrates sweet, adorable, innocent, pure, simple, genuine, gentle, vulnerable, weak, and
inexperienced social behavior and physical appearances (Kinsella 220). The idea of kawaii
appeared in the mid 1960s through the 1970s and initially started with Japanese school girls.
Around that time, as indicated by advertisements and articles from magazines, the desire for a

1. Tends to be a little stricter. Since higher education is funded by the state, the fees are very low;
Leo Monzie, a former student in France, states the tuition varies from €150 to €700 ($200 to
$1000) depending on the university and the different levels of education.
IV. Lifestyle
A. Food and Alcohol
1. Most common dishes Traditional French culture places a high priority on the enjoyment of
food. Cheese and wine are a major part of the cuisine, as well as the Charolais cattle lives all over
the country. While the styles of food change drastically from region to region, the most common
foods include: Foie Gras, Crepes, Various Cheeses, Baguettes, and countless desserts.
2. Impact of alcohol in the country
i. Legal drinking age is 18, Minimum Age Limits Worldwide , International Center for Alcohol
Policies, January 2010. ii. Although France may be one of the most drinking countries, it is seen
more as a social aspect, and France hold one of the lowest rates of binge drinking today. C.
Entertainment 1. Sports Football (Soccer), Tennis, and Cycling
2. Hobbies Other than the sports, there is petanque (nearly like bochy ball), motorcycle riding, wine
tasting, cooking, and gardening. D. Media and Art
1. Cinema/TV I find that TV commercials are much more interesting and fun to watch in France
made to truly entertain its viewers. All

The Siege Of Jerusalem By Ezekiel
Ludicrous. Torturous. Appalling. The unthinkable prophetic acts that God commanded for Ezekiel
to perform throughout his ministry were meant to be sensational scenes that demonstrated what
was to come for the Israelites. Ezekiel, illustrating the siege of Jerusalem was one of the first
prophetic acts God required Ezekiel to complete. God commanded Ezekiel to create a miniature
version of an invading army camped around Jerusalemand then place an iron plate between
himself and Jerusalem. Ezekiel, while lying on the left side of his body for three hundred ninety
days, represented the number of years that Israel was punished, and then lying on his right side
for forty days, represented the number of years that Judah was punished. Ezekiel had to portion
out water and grain cake, which he was supposed to cook on human manure to demonstrate the
unclean bread that Israel would soon eat, but Ezekiel refused as cooking on human manure
disobeyed God s dietary laws. Therefore, God compromised with Ezekiel and allowed him to
prepare the food on animal manure instead. Ezekiel, portraying the siege of Jerusalemwas just the
beginning of what God required Ezekiel to do in order to illustrate the suffering that the Israelites
were about to experience due to their unfaithfulness. Not only did God use Ezekiel to perform
extraordinary prophetic acts in order to get His message across to the Israelites, but God also
allowed for Ezekiel to have visions that reached beyond history and

Gender and Advertising
How Gender Shapes Meaning
The emotional, sexual, and psychological stereotyping of females begins when the doctor says, It s
a girl.
Shirley Chisholm
Men are dogs and women are cats. Women are from Venus and men are from Mars. Writers,
filmmakers, psychologists, and advertisers all have used the idea that men and women are
different to develop stories, create conflict, and provide persuasive imagery. Not only do advertisers
view men and women differently, but men and women also bring different perspectives to
advertising. Thus, we can assume that men and women create dif ferent meanings from the
advertisements they see. Gender roles in our society have changed dramatically since ... Show more

Once the meaning from an advertisement has been determined, men and women differ in how that
meaning is used. These different decision making processes are related to whether the process is
linear or more nonlinear in nature. Men process messages and make decisions more quickly than
women do, perhaps because men focus on the primary mes sage of a given advertisement and take
in little other information during the process. This is due to the observation that men have a linear
thinking and reasoning style, and men tend to have a more task oriented focus than women have.
Women, on the other hand, process the information in an advertisement quickly and from many
levels and sources, including music, visuals, voice over, and text. Women also tend to evaluate and
weigh the various sources to process the message and determine what steps to take next. Women s
reasoning processes are less task oriented and more compartmentalized than men s are. Women s
decision making processes are characterized as being incremental reasoning processes, where each
piece of information builds on the previous information that is taken in. This non linear approach to
reasoning allows women to think in terms of interrelated factors, not straight lines. The observation
that women evaluate multiple sources supports this reason ing style (Fisher, 1999).
Women and men respond to entirely different stimuli when viewing and evaluating advertising
messages (Popcorn amp; Marigold,

Patriarchy s Radar In Don Quixote
Kathryn Renae Metcalf
Mr. Barrera
ISA AP Literature A
15 December 2014
Surviving Below the Patriarchy s Radar Patriarchal structure remains prevalent today with the
concepts of white knighting, fathers walking their daughters down the aisle to be given away to
another man in a wedding, a father s approval for a daughter s partner, and many other cases. In
Miguel de Cervantes s Don Quixote, Don Quixote works to save various damsels in distress as his
patriarchal white knight position and is always working to please Dulcinea through his efforts of
gallantry. In the case of the Captive, the Captive ultimately tried eloping with Lela Zoraida. The
Captive s secret relationship with Lela Zoraida was only able to occur because the affairs were
conducted below Lela Zoraida s father s radar, therefore, he was not aware of these proceedings. ...

Dallas Cowboys History
Who are the top linebackers in Dallas Cowboys history? Football is a game that s ultimately won
at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. The Dallas Cowboys currently have 12 players
who ve been enshrined out of their 14 overall members in the Hall. 8 have made it on offense, 4
have made it on defense, and though getting after the quarterback starts from the D lineman, the
Cowboys have had a few second level defenders at linebacker that impacted their defense to
triumph. As we continue our best ever in Cowboys history series, the honorable mentions such
as Thomas Hollywood Henderson, Dexter Coakley, Ken Norton Jr. and Eugene Lockhart come
to mind, but in my overall examination, three players standout most who left their hard work
and dedication on the field, narrowing down my top list to the best 3 linebackers to play for the
Dallas Cowboys. 3) OLB, DeMarcus Ware: The 6 foot 4, 258 pound sack machine is still recording
double digit sacks at age 32. Ware, a versatile hybrid type, who was projected to be a DE/OLB
out of Troy University, has excelled his game as one of the best QB Hunters on the perimeter.
Selected 11th overall in the 05 draft by the Cowboys, Ware was a perfect match for Hall of Fame

Scalia Textualism Analysis
There are many forms of constitutional interpretation, including constructionism, originalism,
balancing, precedent, and reliance on foreign law and courts. The late Justice Antonin Scalia was a
close adherer to the doctrine known as textualism. A textualist seeks to look at the actual text and
then examine the meaning of the text based on original intent and other criteria. Scalia s approach
to legal interpretation has garnered praise from many sources. Justice Elena Kagan said of Scalia s
approach, that his views on textualism and originalism, his views on the role of judges in our
society, on the practice of judging, have really transformed the terms of legal debate in this country.

Theme Of Sidney Carton
A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens is one of the most memorable novels in the history of
English Literature. The novel starts with the famous lines It was the best of times, it was the worst
of times ( Dickens 11). The novel depicts London, England and Paris, France in later years of the
seventeenth century. It presents to us the confusion, the political one that surrounded the two
nations during that period of time. The novelis rich in meaning and significance and Dickens has
very skilfully integrated various themes. Dickens genius of characterisation is fully evident in this
novel. In this paper, an attempt has been made to analyse the character of Sidney Carton in the light
of the observation that he has been used by Dickens to bring out the theme of Resurrection in the
novel.
It is far, far better thing that I do than I have ever done. It is a far, far better rest that I have than I
have ever known. ( Dickens 367). These beautiful, touching words has been put by the author in the
mouth of Sidney Carton, our hero at the very end moments of his life. He has throughout been an
alcoholic and apathetic man. Although he s a man blessed with intelligentsia which is evident from
his being the mind behind the success of Stryver as a lawyer, ... Show more content on

The Communist Manifesto And The Revolution
Part B #2: The Communist Manifesto and the Revolution
A revolution generally thought of as a change from the norm. According to Christopher Hill the
definition of a revolution is a complete over throw of the established government in any country or
state by those who have been previously subjected to it . Another way to think about a revolution is
as an uprising caused by a group of individuals towards another group due to unfair conditions or
treatment. The Communism Manifesto, written by Karl Marx, was a document written for the
general public that described communism and promoted the oppressed individuals to change
societal social class. I will argue that the Communism Manifesto was a document that was meant to
start a revolution. In society the oppressors, the bourgeoisie, had complete control over the
government, working condition, as well as the lives of the oppressed middle and lower class, the
proletariats. If the proletariats wanted to see a change in the inequality caused by the class system
and regain power then it is the essential that the proletariats overthrow the existing power.
According to the Manifesto the history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class
struggle, in other words class conflict has occurred throughout history, and will continue to occur. A
revolution will lead history towards its final destination.
The proletariats are the group of people, according to the Communist Manifesto, that will eventually
over throw the

The Theory Of Basic Anxiety
The theorist Karen Horney was the first person to develop the idea of basic anxiety. Having her
own personal struggles with being rejected of affection aided her thought of social development,
yet paving the way for new developmental theories of personality. The impact Horney had on the
discipline of psychologywas enormous. Horney not only inspired women psychologists, but also
created a new place in the world where women had the right to their own ideas. Karen Horneywas
born and raised in Germany. When Horney was a child she yearned for her parents love and
affection. She felt that her parents did not love her or one another, as they should. As throughout
her childhood and adolescents she saw the hostility and resentment between her parents. With
Horney s childhood loneliness and enlightening influences of Alfred Adler and Sigmund Freud, she
began to have interest in human personality and behavior. As an adult Horney attended the
University of Berlin in 1913, where she studied medicine and received her Ph. D. While at the
University of Berlin she fell in and out of love, and then one day she finally met her husband but
seventeen years later they separated.
Afterwards Horney moved to the United States of America, perusing to help patients as she did in
Germany. As in America, Horney saw the uprising of women s rights, which were starting to
become popular in America than other places around the world. Horney learned that there was a

Ray Bradbury s Short Story The Veldt
You hear the great sound of the technology roaming around your house slowly die. Then
moments later, you feel a rage inside of you. A rage that you ve never felt before, and has been
waiting to come out. You suddenly want the technology turned back on so you can live your life
the way you have been for your whole life. But when the technology is threatened to stay off,
what would you do? Scream, panic, cry, or kill? This scenario happens to the children in Ray
Bradbury s story The Veldt. This story takes place in the future within a Happy life home that
shelters a family of four. George, Lydia, Wendy, and Peter live in this home altogether, and their
whole life revolves around the technology they own. As the technology is used to threaten... Show

Ray Bradbury helps me, the reader, understand how extravagant these technologies are, and he
really makes you feel attracted to something that is simply created in his fictional story.
Bradbury helps me understand it all a little bit better through descriptive sentences. Specifically
this descriptive sentence, With the children gone, the two men stood studying the lions clustered
at a distance, eating with great relish whatever it was they had caught, taken from Bradbury s
story, The Veldt. This descriptive sentence ultimately describes how vivid the technology is in
this time of the future. This sentence from The Veldt also shows how technology can advance
from now to when this story is taken place. With technology always modernizing, more and more
people will want to be more involved with all of the new devices. Another quote from The Veldt
also describes the situation, which is, They walked down the hall of their soundproofed
Happylife Home, which had cost them thirty thousand dollars installed, This also shows what
extent this family of four will go to in order to get the newest gadgets. This quote from The Veldt
also gives us an idea about how much this family really cared about spending money on things
they want, and think they need . All of the new technologies can really distract you, and lead you
to forget about the things that you should care about a lot more in life. Along with that, as the
years go by, the easy way can start being taken a lot more with the constant use of

URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is nothing more than the address of a known distinctive
resource on the Web. A URL is a collection of various parts, some obligatory and others voluntary.
First is the protocol and it indicates which protocol the browser have to use. The Web
necessitates one of these two, however browsers also know how to lever other protocols such as

to honestly use an IP address, because it is less expedient and is not frequently used on the Web.

In the browser s address bar, a URL doesn t have any perspective, so one must supply a fully
qualified URL. It is not required to embrace the protocol or the port, but all the additional parts
of the URL are obligatory. When a URL is consumed within a web document, effects are a bit
dissimilar. Because the browser by now has the document s own URL, it can utilize this
information to block up in the lost parts of any URL available within that document. It can be
differentiated that between an absolute URL and a relative URL, only the path part of the URL
is different. If the path part of the URL begins with the / character, the browser will obtain that
source from the peak root of the server, devoid of reference to the context known by the current
document. Regardless of their very practical tang, URLs signify a human readable ingress end
for a Web site. They can be remembered easily, and anyone can enter them into the address bar.
People are at the center of the Web, and so it is well thought out best practice to construct
something called semantic URLs. Semantic URLs employ words with intrinsic meaning that
can be implicit by anyone, despite of their practical know how. For SEO, always it is desirable to
know the number of indexed pages. To set out one stage deeper, it is to be required to recognize

  • 2. Clifford Geertz s Definition Of Religion 3) Clifford Geertz s definition of religion is an accurate reflection of the basic tenet of religion. Geertz argues that religion is based solely on the concepts of symbols and the impacts that symbols have on the practitioners of the religion. Geertz demonstrates that symbols give a meaning to life. The symbols give practitioners something to hold onto at all times. Geertz s definition of symbols and their impacts fits the use of symbols in many religious practices including the religions of the Huichol Indians and the Amish sect of the Protestant Christian church. In the first part of the Geertz s definition, he states that religionis a system of symbols which acts... . All religions are made up of symbols. In the Amish church, the symbols include the baptism and living in a traditional way. For the Amish, baptism symbolize[s] a commitment to both God and fellow believers (Robinson, 2015). By being baptized, the adult member of the community is making a lifelong commitment to live a simple life for God in the way of the Amish. For the Huichol, Ramon states, Now I will tell you of the maize and the peyote and the deer... They are our life. They are ourselves. (189). For the Huichol, the symbols represent a unity complex that are the centerfold of their religion. Religion is made up of symbols, and the Amish Christian and Huichol religious complexes demonstrate that concept. In the second part of the definition, Geertz states that symbols establish powerful, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Rocket Boys Character Analysis During the 1950s, the American family structure was strongly patriarchal in which the man of the house went to work to provide for his family, his wife stayed at home to take care of the house and kids, and the kids were expected to go to school and be very well disciplined and respectable. Even in the coal towns of Central Appalachia this familyorientation was prevalent, as such the children of the miners were set too standards that would carry this structure on for many decades. When a child finds that they do not meet the expectations that are levied upon him/her by their parents and the rest of the community their life is made difficult as they struggle to find who they truly are and still try to live up to what others expect. This is exactly the case that Homer Sonny Hickam Jr. finds himself in. Through his memoir, Rocket Boys, Homer Hickam retells the story of his youth as a boy struggling through life trying to become who he wants to be while his father tries to push him to be who he is expected to be. In the small coal towns of West Virginia, the youth was expected to primarily do one of two things. Which one you were expected of depended upon your gender, if you were male you were expected to graduate high school, maybe, and then go into the mines to dig coal like your father and his father before him. If you were female you were expected to graduate high school and then marry a miner and raise his kids and care for his house just like your mother and her mother before her. For Sonny though we know from the very first page that his parents had opposing ideas of what was expected of him as he writes, I didn t know that my hometown was at war with itself over its children and that my parents were locked in a kind of bloodless combat over how my brother and I would live our lives (Hickam 1). Just a few pages later it is discovered that his mother wanted Sonny to pursue something other than mining and exactly what boys of Coalwood were expected to do; Almost all of the grown up boys I knew had either joined the military services or gone to work in the mine. I had no idea what the future held in store for me. The only thing I knew for sure was my mother did not see me going into the mine (Hickam ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Gender Roles In The Dispossessed In Ursula K. Le Guin s utopian novel The Dispossessed, gender roles are one of the main theme in the novel. The author uses two planets, Anarres and Urras to represent the different form of society, to understand gender roles. In Urras, which is an Earth like world, women are treated as if owned by men. However, in Anarres, a person s sex is irrelevant to the society, therefore there was an equality of gender. Le Guin s purpose for this was to make her audience subconsciously think about how society view gender roles by uses the affinity of a visitor, shevek to an Earth like world to illustrate the disunity of the Earth like customs. By comparing the two twin planets, Le Guin uses gender rolein the novel to critique our society by using ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Settings in to Kill a Mockingbird Maycomb County had recently been told that it had nothing to fear but fear itself . This statement made by Scout at the beginning of Harper Lee s To Kill a Mockingbird shows that Maycomb is a town in which the fear of change is rife. Lee s choice of Maycomb as a setting, developed through narrative point of view and characterisation was vital to the text as it helped to develop the theme of prejudiceand the consequences which result from the fixed attitudes of an insular town. One of the ways in which Lee presents Maycomb is through the fluctuating narrative point of view between he mature adult Scout and the naГЇve child narrator. The narration of Scout as an adult is objective and is suggestive of the opinions of the people who live ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Beautiful things floated round in his dreamy head. The choice of a small insular town in which to set a novel about racial prejudice helped Lee to develop the idea that Persecution comes from people who are prejudiced. At first, the prejudices displayed by the citizens of Maycomb seem benign and irrelevant. However, in this small community these prejudices soon culminate into something much more serious: racial prejudice. This prejudice is displayed in the trail of Tom Robinson in which the defence lawyer refers to Tom as boy , while politely questioning white witnesses. This causes Dill to start crying at the unfairness and injustice that is created by racism saying, it was just him I couldn t stand . Maycomb also serves in showing how the persecution of innocent mockingbirds can result from racial prejudice. Maycomb s highly defined social class system, in which blacks are considered to be lesser equals, is the reason for the persecution of Tom Robinson. Robinson s persecution came not only because he was black, but because he broke one of Maycomb s social mores by feeling sorry for and helping Mayella Ewell You felt sorry for her? You felt sorry . The notion that a black could be in a position to feel sympathy for a white was abhorrent for Maycomb s citizens and this is why they allowed and indeed endorsed the persecution of an innocent man. • 6. Review Of Vampire Bats 1.Vampire bats give blood to unrelated vampire bats for several reasons. Among the reasons are the cost sharing of blood, the benefit of sharing blood and the probability that the bats that were given blood will in turn reciprocate and give blood to other bats at a later date. The cooperative equilibria in bloodsharing among bats means that the sharing of blood will occur if the benefits of sharing blood multiplied by the probability that blood sharing will be beneficial in the future is greater than the cost of sharing blood. If a bat shares blood with another bat (even an unrelated bat), the bat that is the recipient is expected to donate blood to other bats at a larger rate than it received at a later time. A donor bat will give blood to a bat that has not had a meal so that this bat can have the opportunity to hunt again, giving an increased chance that it will reciprocate to another bat that has not had a meal, enabling the roost to maintain survival. In the event that a recipient bat does not reciprocate in the future, that bat will not be donated to if it needs it in the future, thus allowing for recipient bats to be donor bats in the future as needed. 2.In the Berg, Dickhaut and McCabe (1995) study, factors that influence the likelihood of trust in economic transactions is a fundamental assumption that individuals act in their own self interest which is often combined with other assumptions that (1) objects of interest are restricted to personal consumption; ... • 7. Postoperative Pain And Anxiety Essay Analyzing the Effect of Music on Postoperative Pain and Anxiety The effect of music on postoperative pain and anxiety was studied on an orthopedic unit in a central Florida hospital (Allred, Byers, Sole, 2010). The authors clearly identified the problem many total knee arthroplasty patients experience after surgery is moderate to severe postoperative pain and increased anxiety. Throughout the introduction of the study, it was stressed the importance and need for this research to be conducted. The authors discussed the effects of inadequately treated pain and how health care professionals, including nursing, should make it a priority in a patient s treatment plan (Allred et al., 2010). Several references were provided supporting the issue ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The researchers included both a hypothesis and research questions. They stated a hypothesis, however it is a research hypothesis versus a null hypothesis. A research hypothesis explains there is correlation between two or more variables. A null hypothesis is a classification of hypotheses that states there is no connection between the independent and dependent variables. Statistical testing is performed to determine whether the statement is acceptable or not. Whereas the research question is an analysis statement detailing the variables and population of the specified research study (Adams, 2015). The hypothesis, the authors were hoping to prove, was whether the use of music would reduce pain and anxiety in postoperative pain in a particular patient population during a defined time frame (Allred et al., 2010). An example of a null hypothesis for this study would state music would have no effect on postoperative pain in a particular patient population during a defined time frame. There were four research questions the researchers attempted to answer. Three of the four questioned the effect of music on the patient s pain, anxiety, and physiologic parameters. However the fourth question pertained to the impact of music on the amount of opioids taken from the beginning of the intervention until six hours later (Allred et al., 2010). • 8. Louis Riel s Last Words Before His Execution I have nothing but my heart, I have given it long ago to my country. These are Louis Riel s last words before his execution. Two themes that have been debated is whether Louis Riel is a traitor or hero to the MГ©tis. There have been many controversial figures throughout Canada s history, but Louis Riel is one of the most controversial figure. His perspective on how he dealt with manner is still debated today. A key aspect discussed today is why Riel is a hero to his people; the MГ©tis. Louis Rielhad once recognized the turmoil the MГ©tis had to face, through this Riel proved that one must take actions in order to achieve a person s right. Firstly, Louis Riel is a savior due to his actions to defend the Roman Catholic faith and French and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Moreover, the government s insufficiency caused Riel to act accordingly. Earlier, it was mentioned that the Canadian government was not authorized to take legal action until December of 1869. Though this was clearly recognized by the government, they sent surveyors in June of 1869 for settlers to live there. The government broke their own laws, hence it proves that Riel, due to the government s flawed intentions, had to enforce his rule, by stepping on the chains. Unit Two: The Development of Western Canada, on page 36 highlights that in 1882, surveyors came to the MГ©tis peoples North West Settlements to examine the land once more. The MГ©tis acted quickly and sent 15 petitions to the Canadian government for the rights of their land, none of which were answered. Once again, the government was incapable. The government could have prevented all the troubles, but due to their insufficiency and flawed system, they let the surveyors come onto the land. In addition to this, the government had signed many treaties with the MГ©tis. But, the government, yet again, didn t keep their word and didn t follow the laws of giving them what the treaties had promised. To conclude, Riel was compelled to take arms. The lack of control, caused the government to spend millions and ended in destruction. • 10. Analysis On Key Value Stores Essay Analysis on Key Value Stores Introduction We have come into the era of Big Data. As (Atikoglu, Xu, Frachtenberg, Jiang, Paleczny, 2012) stated, the need for efficiently storing large scale data in scale out companies at lower cost is dramatically increasing. Therefore Key Value Store has occurred in popularity. (Fitzpatrick, 2004) has clarified that KV stores plays an essential role in lots of huge websites such as Facebook, Twitter, GitHub and Amazon. This paper reviewed 6 popular key value stores and distinguished primary features, performance and availability of each. The six systems are Hyperdex, Dynamo, SILT, Project Voldemort used by LinkedIn, Berkeley DB and LevelDB used by Google. A key value store database has a set of keys and values, and each value is associated with a key. The implementation of key value store database is actually a distributed hash table (Stonebraker, 04 /2010). Key Value Stores(KV), which are normally known as a model of NoSQL databases, are widely deployed for data operation and management in purpose of enhancing Internet services due to better scalability, higher efficiency and more availability than existing relational databases systems (Wang, et al., 2014). Because KV stores sacrifice relation model in exchange for fast writing, and they are often featured with simple methods like put() , delete() and get() . • 11. The Symbolism Of Color In Richard Wright s Native Son What is black, white, and red all over? A sunburned zebra, of course! These three colors also describe events that occur in Richard Wright s novel Native Son. While a great deal of importance is placed on the color black, white remains present throughout the novel. The colors combine in many instances to lend great significance to characterization and setting. Through symbolism, Wright uses the colors black and white to illustrate the major problem of the era: the separation of black and white Americans. Furthermore, Wright utilizes communist red to emphasize the novel s overwhelming black and white imagery. From the first pages of the novel, Bigger is associated with the color black. Next, when Bigger enters the Dalton household, the white cat glares at him with its red eyes. After meeting the Dalton s, Bigger meets Mary whom he refers to as a hot kind of girl (36). Mary also has bright red lips that differ from her milky skin and jet black hair. Also, the contrasting image of the white bones, in the black ashes in the flaming furnace continues to show the overlap of the three colors. It started as a technique to discipline your children but now days are used largely by teenager parents, who have lower patients and low self control. I m strongly against this concept of smacking your children for discipline, it s disgraceful to think that people in this century still use the assistance of this conception. It s hard to believe, but sometimes children smacking is only done to achieve satisfaction, for example an angry dad from work might come to home just to realize that one of his children has broken something in the house, the anger from work and this broken object might just add up to equal the dad losing his... Statistics shows that 69 precent of Australia parents still find the use for smacking their children, if we think about this logically, 69 precents of Australian children s possibly have adapted to this this idea which shows dark future for the violence in Australia. I have witnessed this adaptive behaviour myself, one of my cousin went through traumatizing child hood. He was smacked at least once a day, I believe that his parents were too violent with him and this lead to, my cousin getting in countless fights in schools. When parents smack their children, they don t realize the long term consequence of it, which is exactly what happened with my cousin s parents. Low Velocity Impact and Impact after Compression in Cork Based Composite material ABSTRACT: Experiments are carried out in the investigation to find out the role of cork as an ideal core material, which is used as a shield plate in the front of land military vehicles to verify the energy absorption and damage tolerance. Composite materials are used in various industries these days due to its high strength to weight ratio putting them into light weight applications. Vacuum Assisted Resin Infusion Method is chosen to manufacture the laminate. Specimens are cut according to American Society for Testing and Materials Standards are used. Low velocity impact is carried out on the specimens to observe the energy absorption capabilities of the specimens with two different testing variables i.e., energy level and amount of the viscoelastic material. Afterwards, Compression after Impact test is carried out to study the Damage tolerance of the impacted specimen. The study of all the results from the above tests shows us the energy absorption and damage tolerance with the presence of cork as a core material. Further studies can be done in different energy levels, different viscoelastic materials and also different fibres and resins. These techniques are not important per se but rather there is a particular purpose they seek. One of these purposes is persuasion. According to Lester (p. 77): communication is fundamentally and essentially a matter of persuasion, attitude change, behavior modification, and socialization through the transmission of information . Images are an essential part of the visual persuasion, which modern mass media incorporates. As we have observed in our readings this visual persuasion can take different forms in order to be the most effective and to achieve its goal. Lester states that: most information, whether factual or not, is communicated through the mass media. More and more that information relies on the emotional appeal inherent in visual presentations (ibid). Moreover: pictures have always been the surest way of conveying an idea (ibid). I sat down with the Head of Network and Plant Performance and worked out that I needed to arrange for: Voltage levels to be measured and adjusted it if possible (by adjusting tap positions on transformers, switching in of Capacitor banks or voltage regulators), remove unnecessary loading on supply feeders to the Taung Substation and reconfigure the networkwhere possible to provide alternative paths for load to flow, measure the three phase load balance and reconfigure connected loads to provide an even spread of loads across the three phases. If these actions couldn t resolve the problems then proceed with recruiting a team of subject matter experts to conduct more detailed investigation to ascertain the physical condition of the Taung Village 11kV feeder, then verify and record what hardware was used in the construction of the feeder and also the standard to which the structures were build and the hardware used. ... • 34. Unauthorized Practice of Law Essay In order to complete this assignment we must first recognize what Unauthorized Practice of Law is when it comes to paralegals. There is no set definition on what UPL is but as a paralegal there are guidelines to go by. Some ways they can violate the practice of law would be an individual holding themselves as an attorney when they are paralegals, giving legal advice as an attorney would, or representing clients in a court of law. All of the previous are violations and can be subject to several disciplinary actions [ (Unauthorized Practice of Law, 2010) ]. It has been named illegal due to the damages on may suffer due to bad legal advice. In some states it is considered a criminal offense and could be given a jail sentence. With that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Now this one is a bit trickier than the other. To give proper advice would be giving legal advice. Mrs. Smith would have to know the ins and outs of divorce when it comes to adultery and Polly legally cannot supply the answer. Once again, Polly has the responsibility to let Mrs. Smith know that she is not a lawyer and she can t give any legal advice. Information that involves the grounds for any law suit of any matter is considered legal advice. Although Mrs. Smith may feel that a simple yes or no will not hurt Polly, it will. One thing Polly can do that is not UPL is to advise Mrs. Smith to seek legal representation [ (Orlik, 2007) ]. This action can save Polly a lot of hassles and the chance of getting disciplined. Now the reasoning behind prohibiting the unauthorized practice of law is not to hurt lawyers and anyone legally practicing law. These were put into place to help from personally damaging cases and individuals alike. What if you were given advice and used it to help with your case. Then come to find out that this advice or information was not at all correct and cost you your case. You would be very adamant to return to the individual to find out what had happened. Then you also find out that this person was not legally able to practice law in any manner. You would be furious and would want this person to pay for his/her actions. • 35. The Sixties Countercultures The Sixties were a time of major change in United States society. We had reached beyond modernity with technology, consumerism, and the youth leading us to the suburbs of discontent. According to Hugh Heclo, There came surge of personal discontent and social self questioning that would constitute the great awakening of the 1960s. He goes on to argue that people no longer accepted the status quo and from the counter culture groups we have studied in class this is evident. People were more concerned with morals and institutional openness in order to create a better vision of the world than the traditional ideals of the Cold Warera. Heclos main argument is that this vision is the legacy of the Sixties is the tendency for peoples to question their governments practices, in the name of a more egalitarian society. I agree with his assertions and can see proof in the Yippee movement, Students for a democratic society, and Young Americans for Freedom. The counterculture shows how action was taken to restructure the government in their own way in order to help the newly oppressed. While the groups do not exist in the same way today, the actions they took made a lasting impression on the fabric of society and government. The Yippies were radical and wanted a complete rejection and reformulation of the American system. They were unwilling to work within existing institutions and used theatrical tactics to demonstrate their discontent. They partook in drug use, enjoyed rock n ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While many aspects of its culture differ considerably from that of the United States and Europe, it is this difference that while weird to some is fascinating and even tantalizing to others. One of the most apparent of the cultural phenomena unique to Japan is the idea of kawaii. Kawaii is a difficult term to translate into English, but the term celebrates sweet, adorable, innocent, pure, simple, genuine, gentle, vulnerable, weak, and inexperienced social behavior and physical appearances (Kinsella 220). The idea of kawaii appeared in the mid 1960s through the 1970s and initially started with Japanese school girls. This was an experimentation by the youth in being able to speak more freely and through this they expressed themselves more easily with a style of writing that they felt more connected to as a result of their manipulations (Kinsella 224). • 39. The Siege Of Jerusalem By Ezekiel Ludicrous. Torturous. Appalling. The unthinkable prophetic acts that God commanded for Ezekiel to perform throughout his ministry were meant to be sensational scenes that demonstrated what was to come for the Israelites. Ezekiel, illustrating the siege of Jerusalem was one of the first prophetic acts God required Ezekiel to complete. God commanded Ezekiel to create a miniature version of an invading army camped around Jerusalemand then place an iron plate between himself and Jerusalem. Ezekiel, while lying on the left side of his body for three hundred ninety days, represented the number of years that Israel was punished, and then lying on his right side for forty days, represented the number of years that Judah was punished. Ezekiel had to portion out water and grain cake, which he was supposed to cook on human manure to demonstrate the unclean bread that Israel would soon eat, but Ezekiel refused as cooking on human manure disobeyed God s dietary laws. Therefore, God compromised with Ezekiel and allowed him to prepare the food on animal manure instead. Ezekiel, portraying the siege of Jerusalemwas just the beginning of what God required Ezekiel to do in order to illustrate the suffering that the Israelites were about to experience due to their unfaithfulness. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Once the meaning from an advertisement has been determined, men and women differ in how that meaning is used. These different decision making processes are related to whether the process is linear or more nonlinear in nature. Men process messages and make decisions more quickly than women do, perhaps because men focus on the primary mes sage of a given advertisement and take in little other information during the process. This is due to the observation that men have a linear thinking and reasoning style, and men tend to have a more task oriented focus than women have. Women, on the other hand, process the information in an advertisement quickly and from many levels and sources, including music, visuals, voice over, and text. Women also tend to evaluate and weigh the various sources to process the message and determine what steps to take next. Women s reasoning processes are less task oriented and more compartmentalized than men s are. Women s decision making processes are characterized as being incremental reasoning processes, where each piece of information builds on the previous information that is taken in. This non linear approach to reasoning allows women to think in terms of interrelated factors, not straight lines. The observation that women evaluate multiple sources supports this reason ing style (Fisher, 1999). According to Christopher Hill the definition of a revolution is a complete over throw of the established government in any country or state by those who have been previously subjected to it . Another way to think about a revolution is as an uprising caused by a group of individuals towards another group due to unfair conditions or treatment. The Communism Manifesto, written by Karl Marx, was a document written for the general public that described communism and promoted the oppressed individuals to change societal social class. I will argue that the Communism Manifesto was a document that was meant to start a revolution. In society the oppressors, the bourgeoisie, had complete control over the government, working condition, as well as the lives of the oppressed middle and lower class, the proletariats. If the proletariats wanted to see a change in the inequality caused by the class system and regain power then it is the essential that the proletariats overthrow the existing power.
