A Study Of Returns At Shareholders Of Bidding Firms
In a study of returns to shareholders of bidding firms in tender offers, it was reported that average
announcement date for abnormal returns was significantly less negative for bidding firms where
half of the board was composed of independent directors from outside. There was a positive
reaction from market after the announcement of poison pills when the board was composed majorly
of outside directors and negative when it was not (Brickely et al., 1994). Examination of the link
between outside directors on board and shareholders wealth provides significantly positive evidence
as on average excess returns are directly related to the appointment of the outside directors in the
board by the management. This suggests that outside independent... Show more content on

3.0Research Methods and Research Design
This section will demonstrate the research approach and design used to complete the purposed
study. It will also highlight the sources used for data collection, to analyse and evaluate the
evidence regarding research question.
3.1Research Design
This section illustrates the research approach used to collect and analyse the evidence for this
research. There are two main approaches to a research problem, qualitative research and quantitative
research. Quantitative is predominantly used as a synonym for any data collection technique (such
as a questionnaire) or data analysis procedure (such as graphs or statistics) that generates or uses
numerical data. In contrast, qualitative is used for any data collection technique (such as an
interview) or data analysis procedure (such as categorising data) that generates or uses non
numerical data (Saunders, et al., 2007). Qualitative research includes techniques like case studies,
interviews, personal observations and focus groups.

Hiroshima Sparknotes
John Hersey s Hiroshima is written in logical and chronological order. It begins in the past, and
then it smoothly moves farther in time and ends with statements and questions that are inspiring to
further thought. Hersey arranged the sequence throughout forty years after the explosion, so that
the reader can follow the characters lives as well as their history and surroundings. The title itself
announces the subject and prepares the reader for the approach to take. It refers to the whole
concept of the book, it tells the reader that it revolves around the city where the first atomic bomb
was dropped. The book content is five chapters, however, the first edition originally appeared with
four. The first section A Noiseless Flash introduces... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Kiyoshi Tanimoto opens up and ends the parallel and consecutive stories of every character. He
described as a thoughtful pastor who works without end to aid nameless dying. Hersey focuses on
him more than any other character, he even ends the narrative with aging Mr. Tanimoto which
highlights his significance. To put another way, information about Tanimoto s experience explains
the motive of the narrative and predicts the developing person. Author provides the history details
on conducting nuclear tests while talking about the Tanimoto s aftermath, for example, one of
few: On May 18, 1974, India conducted its first nuclear test (151). In other words, Hersey
skillfully pens dramatic narrative where readers experience action as if it were happening at real
time. He also employs dialogue, Tanimoto has a voice which explicitly highlights emotion of the

What is important to you? People are in a constant quest for what seems to be important in life.
Many different answers are given to people and they never seem never to not find a set answer.
Some are in search for fame, fortune, love, happiness, and wisdom. Those are some of the obvious
answers the average person might give you. To this day, they continue to never be truly satisfied by
the those answers. They continue to ask the question why? In Tolstoy, s Three Questions have and

other carriers. Many carriers were sunk by submarines, but submarines were also likely to be
sunk by other aircraft carriers after their presence was known. Aircraft Carriers Lost in Battle
Due to their importance aircraft carriers were considered a priority target, and as a result, many
were lost during World War II. Most were sunk by aircraft, like the battleships they were
replacing. Most in the pacific theater were lost in during the Battle of Midway or the Coral Sea.
The loss of the carriers, especially the Japanese carriers, had a significant effect on the outcome
of the war. World War II era were very fragile, and could have their flight deck incapacitated
through multiple ways. The most common was dive bombers placing large holes in the flight
deck, along with damaging fires. However, this type of damage was easily repaired. A more
damaging type of damage was torpedo damage. While one or two strikes was usually not enough
to sink a large carrier, it could cause the ship to lean to one side, called listing. When the listing
angle became too high, aircraft could roll off the deck and were unable to land (Navy). A
combination of these two caused the Japanese to scuttle two fleet carriers, the HiryЕ« and the
Kaga (Midway). Submarine attacks In the Pacific Theater of World War II others carriers were the

Battle Of Arabia Essay
Lawrence of Arabia bolstered the Allied Powers through the capture of Damascus by reinforcing
General Allenby s forces and in the process he demonstrated his innovative leadership. Wanting to
advance north against the Turks, Allenby required assistance from the Arabs to attack the Fourth
Army of the Turks east of the JordanRiver. To accomplish that, Allenby needed Lawrence, who
seemed to be the only person who could get the Arabs to fight in an organized way (Korda 379).
Considering Allenby s request, Lawrence altered the proposed strategy to have the Arabs attack Ma
an and the southern railway. Instead, Lawrence believed it would be best to attack the railway from
the north of Ma an. (Korda 379). Furthermore, knowing that the Turks would... Show more content

These tribes rallied with Allenby s army and resulted in a defeat of the Ottomans at Deraa (Mack
163). Importantly, this success at Deraa diminished the already dwindling Turks forces, setting
them up for defeat at Damascus. On September 19th, the day that Allenby captured Damascus, the
Turkish forces were bombarded for fifteen minutes at 4:30 am by 385 guns. This full scale
infantry assault with artillery barrage drove the Turks from their bunker. So firmly had the Turks
been convinced that the assault would be toward the Jordan River that they had thinned out their
infantry on the coastal plain, and their defenses quickly crumbled (Korda 411). At about nine in
the morning on Tuesday, (October 1,) Lawrence and Stirling drove into Damascus to find scenes
of jubilation. Nuri Shaalan and Nasir had already entered the city, and the narrow streets of the old
city of Damascus were aflame with joy and enthusiasm (Barr 297). After the successful assault on
Damascus, presses reported that Colonel Lawrence played a part of the greatest importance in the
Palestine victory. They also notably mentioned the tactics he used at Deraa (Wilson

When Is The Last Time You Fought With Someone For Hours

The audience plays a crucial part here, as they are active participants. It is important that all
participants be knowledgeable, open minded, and respectful. Lastly, the logical perspective relies
on the audience s knowledge of logical patterns such as a cause effect reasoning. The audience in
this case, acts as disinterested and is more of a third party judge (Rybacki 10). Regardless of
perspective, the argumentation for the intended audience must abide by certain ethical standards.
Argumentation is based around the conscious choices of what to say to influence the audience.
Advocates have an ethical responsibility not to deceive their audiences or other arguers by using
obscure or ambiguous language, confusing patterns of organization, or ideas encumbered by
nonessential information or ideas (Rybacki 16). With this said, choosing clear and concrete
language in an organized structure gives the arguer assurance that their message was not
misinterpreted. Honesty is also extremely important in a successful argument, and the arguer should
know their topic thoroughly to avoid false information. Moreover, stating the opposing viewpoints
allows for a more effective and ethical discussion. Efficiency as an ethical standard gives the
advocate the obligation to develop arguments that have the necessary rational power to make their
point (Rybacki 17). Karyn

Allusions In Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales
In the middle ages, society assumed that friars were always impeccable. Most friars expressed that
they served Christ with their preaching, blessing, and begging for gifts. Chaucer mocks the
assumption about religious figures by labeling religious figures in The Canterbury Tales as
hypocrites. In The Summoner s Tale of The Canterbury Tales
, Chaucer uses allusion, imagery, and
the archetypal theme of good vs. evil in order to depict the friar as a hypocritical religious dignitary.
Chaucer uses allusions to numerous Biblical figures, such as Satan and Christ Jesus. The friar,
while presenting his lecture, references countless individuals and stories from the Bible. He
does so in order to tell Thomas, the ill man, that his anger and spite have been the reasons he is
so frail. You lie here full of anger, full of ire, / With which the devil you re your heart afire, / And
chide this humble innocent your wife, / Who s been so meek and patient in her strife (1981 1985).
In the quote, the friar describes Thomas soul as being possessed by the devil, being the ... Show

Chaucer uses a quote on line 2122 that says: He would like to see the friar on fire. That quote is
significant because Thomas irritation by the friar has been increasing. Another important
significance of the quote shows how the friar has the potential to be more devil like, full of ire.
The friar s potential becomes a reality when Thomas farted in the friar s hand. As ridiculous as it
sounds, the friar felt like the fart was the devil possessing him. He went forth on his way
consumed with ire (2158). Ire epitomized evil and the devil. The friar had become evil,
representing malevolence. The anger in him raging like a fire (2166). The anger continues,
showing how the friar s anger continued building up within. Chaucer was able to use archetypal
theme to ridicule the friar, and other religious figures of the time

Piette s House At Montafoucault
The painting Piette s House at Montfoucault is a piece of impressionism and landscape art. In the
painting, it shows a someone s house in the winter time, two people standing in front of it, and
many trees in front of it. It was painted by Camille Pissarro, during the winter of 1874, when he
visited his friend, Ludovic Piette Montfoucault s house. It was painted with oil paints and is
currently residing at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute.
The art has many different textures, colours/values, and lines. The lines are all thin and broken or
curved, except for the tree trunks which are thick and straight and the lines around the houses,
which are straight. The lines do not outline the objects. The textures around the trees, the snow, and
the humans all feel very soft, however, around the houses, where they look rough and look like if
you were to touch it, it would feel like real bricks. The painting is mainly made up of white, and
bright colours, with some darker colours at the areas with shade, the leaves of the trees, and the
roofs of the houses. The colours make the painting look realistic, and it makes it seem like the
place is cold. The form in this painting is 3D. The artist used these elements, to make it so you feel
like you are actually there, or it is just a blurred photograph. ... Show more content on

The Prisoner of War Ethic
Early on in the semester, I have found that Chapter 12 has been one of the more intriguing
sections to read. After deciding on a topic for the paper, I combed the book for interesting topics
that could relate to the prisoner of war ethic. In many ways I started my journey with Chapter 12;
making it all the more fitting that I end here as well.
Chapter 12 and the section on Prima Facie Duties cover a good range of personal subjects. This
chapter espouses the ideal that communication is not confined to national or even international
borders. Kales Human Nature, for example, proposes the importance of the human spirit over
cultural boundaries. Though it is not easy, we must communicate with others in a way that does not
reflect back on our own biases and stereotypes in other forms of intercultural communication. And I
am personally fascinated by the concept of moral exclusion. The ability to which we are able to
extend rights to other people is reflective of where they lie in our sphere of moral consideration, I
believe. One of the eight stages of genocide dehumanization comes to mind. As the book notes, this
dehumanization is reflected in communication. Communication, such as propaganda, that lowers
the status of others exemplifies this dehumanization.
We have a tremendous capacity, to turn people into less than us, and once you do that, you can
justify a hell of a lot of awfulness. Greg Pirmann

Madness In Hamlet Essay
The theme of madness holds deep roots in literary works. Understanding the theme of madness is
key. This theme opens a window to the hidden mind of not only the character but also the author.
Hamlet by William Shakespeare and The Bear: A Joke in one act by Anton Chekhov use this theme
throughout the course of each play. In Hamlet, Prince Hamlet feigns madness in an effort to catch
his murderous uncle. Slowly, the lines of what is real and what is fictionbegin to blur. In the play
The Bear: A Joke in one act, Mrs. Popov begins to drive herself mad. Her husband has died, and
she spends her days mourning him. Each character, though in their own way, she clear signs of
madness. This madness is essential to the plot of each play. In works of literature,... Show more

Popov in The Bear a Joke in One Act by Anton Chekhov. The theme of madness is clearly
demonstrated through Prince Hamlet in the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare. P.J. Aldus
speaks about Shakespeare s use of madness in the article Madness. In this article Aldus states that
Shakespeare knew a good deal about madness in the usual sense of insanity can be believed from
both external fact and internal evidence from the plays (Aldus 209). Shakespeare s use of
madness in his plays shows the greater factors at work in the world. Madness is not only caused
by mental instabilities but also by the environment one lives in. This later point rings the truest
in Hamlet s case. Hamlet s madness was not caused by his mind but by the hand life dealt him.
When Hamlet learns the truth of his father s death, he acts mad to convict his uncle. Hamlet s
madness is shown first hand when Polonius comments on it to the King and Queen. Polonius
remarks that I will be brief. Your noble son is mad. Mad call I it; for, to define true madness

Catcher in the Rye is one of the most famous books in American literature. Written by J. D.
Salinger, it captures the epitome of adolescence through Salinger s infamous anti hero, Holden
Caulfield. Holden Caulfield learns about himself and his negative tendencies, and realizes that if
he does not do something to change his perspective, he may end up like his acquaintance James
Castle whom he met at Elkton Hills. Holden tries to find help to mend his outlook on life through

While talking to Holden, Mr. Antolini says, This fall I think you re riding for it s a special kind
of fall, a horrible kind. The man permitted isn t allowed to feel or hear himself hit bottom (187).
Mr. Antolini is implying that Holden will not realize when he has reached an all time low. Mr.
Antolini is also implying that somehow if Holden keeps going on this downward path down, he
could possibly even end up dead as well, however that might happen. Mr. Antolini is trying to
warn him of this fall and try to help him, before he hits the ground. Mr. Antolini was not able
catch James Castle and is trying to make sure the same thing does not happen to Holden. Mr.
Antolini says to Holden, So they gave up looking. They gave it up before they ever really even

still has time left to turn his life around before it is too late. James Castle jumped out the window
and gave up on life, even though it did not have to be the end. In Catcher in the Rye, Phoebe

Rhetorical Analysis Of The Novel
The use of irony in the novel also contributes to its postmodernism. Many postmodernists treat
serious subjects jovially to distance themselves from the difficult subject. They evoke black
humor and different types of irony to offer critics of society and to display how society should not
fear dark and somber things. DeLillo sprinkles irony all throughout his story using it even at the
most serious of times. He uses it to show how the characters should not feardeath and how the
characters ignore danger when the smoke alarm went off in the hallway upstairs, either to let us
know the battery had just died or because the house was on fire (8) and they did nothing about
the possible imminent danger. DeLillo also uses irony to mock certain characters and expose
the ridiculousness of certain beliefs and customs. When Jack s boss advises him to change his
name and appearance to gain more prestige, the change they make is pretentious as it is the same
name only without one letter, we finally agreed that I should event an extra initial and call
myself J.A.K Gladney (16). DeLillo continues to ridicule society and its principles by exposing
absurdity such as Jack not knowing German despite being the founder of Hitler studies and his
college requiring all Hitler majors to understand some of the language, I had long tried to conceal
the fact that I did not know German (31). The use of irony not only gives the novel a lighter tone,
but also exposes DeLillo s critique of society

Physical And Psychological Effects Of War In The Sniper By...
War is something that can change the very principles of a person, it can change a person and leave
multiple effects that can last for their entire life. The sniper is fighting in a civil war where friends
and family can turn into enemies at a moment s notice. The fight is between the Republicans and
the Free Staters, the protagonist is a sniper for the Republicans. Throughout the story, we go into
the state of mind of the main character and learn some ramifications that he gained in the war. The
text, The Sniper by Liam O Flaherty shows us the physical and psychological results of war, that
happens to people.
The easiest effect that is found throughout the text would be the physical effects, that happens all
the time. Midway through the text without a moment s notice he was perfectly fine and then out of
nowhere he gets shot. We find out about his injury from the quote from the story, His forearm was
dead. I m hit, he muttered. He just finished taking out the informant and the guy in the turret, not
even a minute passed and the sniper gets shot causing an injury that might never fully heal. Hunger
is an important thing that gets ignored in war and people starve for hours not being able to eat
food. In the second paragraph, the author pointed that out in these two sentences, He was eating a
sandwich hungrily. He had eaten nothing since morning. The sniper wasn t able to eat since the
morning he would definitely be starving at that point of time. To compensate

important factor to the changes, was Veterans coming back from the war with new priorities. The

as HUAC(Un American Activities committee). The entertainment industry fought for their rights,

Entertainment not only consists of movies, music, and television but also literature. The beat
generation spoke against how materialistic people were, and they just simply spoke up that is why
they were seen as rebels. In the world of literature and art, the Beats stood in opposition to the
clean, almost antiseptic formalism of the early twentieth century Modernist, (The Beat Generation)
that is what the Beat generation stood up for. Where literature had a turning point was in 1956
when Howel was published by Allen Ginsberg. Censorship as a force for modulating public
discourse, in the realm of literature at least, came to an end (The Beat Generation). With their work
we can express ourselves anyway desired, without anyone coming after us. Although the government
had a valid reason to be worried which was the threat of communism, they believed their work had
the ideology of communism. The beat generation was very open minded, intelligent, and had
knowledge that still impact us today such as environmentalism. The entertainment industry had to
go through all of these changes so that they were able to reach true success. Also Veterans coming

cause to the entertainment industry, they had to come up with ways to expand their content and

good and evil (like ying and yang), greed and power, guilt and conscience, fear, ambition this leads
to the murder of other people illustrating to the reader that even the most sane of people can result

women, money, power. These were all three things that tempted Macbeth. Lady Macbeth seems
quite the contrary to how women in Elizabethan England would have been, the only women
were able to obtain power was by influencing their husbands. This was a great advantage of Lady
Macbeth s on which she played and used very successfully. She was able to influence her husband
so strongly that she convinced him willingly into committing murder willingly; Shakespeare
displays the strength of power that women have the ability to possess if they wish, he conveys
women as sneaky and willing to result to extreme tactics to get their own way; it shows just how
dangerous women can be. Shakespeare uses Lady Macbeth as an icon for powerful women.
Lady Macbeth is a complex and intriguing character in Shakespeare s play, Macbeth. She is a
difficult character to embody as her personality seems split between two sides, one that is pure
evil, sly and conniving in contrast to her softer, vulnerable, weak and feminine side. In the play
we see her in these two main ways. The reader may feel a certain animosity towards Lady Macbeth
throughout the first few acts as her personality appears more and more distasteful, in spite of this
towards the end she has a serious breakdown over the guilt that torments her, even in her sleep,
regarding her hand in Duncan s untimely death.

Other businesses and websites such as eBay, could possibly benefit from the freecycling
business. Many Americans are actually in full support of going green , but not everyone does it;
presumably because they either don t think about it or because there aren t enough businesses

consumers are accustomed to having to spend money to receive items in return. So, the concept of

Things are rough all over. S.E Hinton quoted in her book The Outsiders . Rumble Fish and The

between the main characters, Rusty James and Ponyboy, are love, strength, and confidence.
In both books, Rusty James and Ponyboy look up to and love their brothers greatly, but they
reveal their love separately. Rusty James expresses his love by trying to act just like his brother,

How Does Helicopter Parenting Affect Children
Prompt 1: The problem with helicopter parenting
Some parents believe that protecting their children and over focusing on their children at all time
can be advantageous for their children. However, that s not always the case. Parents over
focusing on theirs children can have a lot of negative effects on the kids. Some parents are doing
everything they can for their children and that s a good thing, yet, doing everything for the kids
when their kids are adult can lead to some problems too. There are two reasons I believe that
helicopter parenting is harmful for the children, such as the children don t know how to become
independent, and the children unable to learn social skills.

Essay on Pool Scenes in The Graduate
Pool Scenes in The Graduate
At first glance it may seem that the swimming pool in Ben?s backyard is no more than an
insignificant setting choice for the movie. After close examination, however, the pool fills a critical
role as the symbol of the recent college graduate?s internal struggle with decisions regarding his
future. Key scenes involving the swimming pool and the related aquarium in Ben?s room chronicle
the evolution of his transition from adolescents into adulthood.
The opening scene of the movie in which Ben?s face is visible through the glass of his aquarium

for Ben?s eventual transition into adulthood. The first evidence of this is after Mrs. Robinson
requests a ride home from Ben; she tosses her car keys to him but instead of landing in Ben?s
hands, the keys fall into his fish aquarium. The emphasis of this action in the movie by a zoom in
and pause on the tank demonstrates its importance as Ben?s childhood life, signified by the
aquarium, has just been contaminated. The encounter foreshadows the loss of innocence that Ben
experiences with his sexual relationship with Mrs. Robinson after she seduces him. At first,
however, Ben does not give into her advances rejecting the idea of adult behaviors like an affair

Ansel Adams a photographer and environmentalist, was born on February 20, 1902 in San
Francisco, California, the son of Charles Hitchcock Adams, a businessman, and Olive Bray. He
was the grandson of a wealthy timber baron. An only child, Adams was born when his mother was
forty. His relatively elderly parents, affluent familyhistory, and the presence of his mothers maiden
sister and aged father all combined to create an environment that was both socially and emotionally
conservative. Adams s mother spent much of her time brooding and fretting over her husband s
inability to restore the Adams fortune, leaving an ambivalent imprint on her son. Charles Adams,
on the other hand, deeply and patiently influenced, encouraged, and supported his son.

Rewards And Punishment At School Learning
In order to understand whether rewards and punishment operate as similar factors an experiment
was designed. Subjects underwent an auditory task where they had to mark down answers on an
answer sheet. Answers marked down showed that punishment had a greater effect on behavior.
Once analyzed, the results showed that punishment and reward do not have a symmetric law of
effect. In fact, giving a punishment had a stronger effect on behavior than giving a reward.
Introduction A staggering twelve years is spent in school learning about a variety of pertinent
subjects. Teachers, the people that work in these learning institutes have used both reward and
punishment to guide behavior. For instance, some teachers offer a prize to whoever gets the highest
score on a test. While others choose to take away free time to those who do poorly on a test. All
those programs are put in place with the goal of improving performance. Unfortunately, not all
systems are successful. In fact, some are incredibly more effective than others. Perhaps, the
consequences of a behavior dictate the outcomes next time. The question posed by this is, Do
punishment and reward operate as distinct factors in influencing behavior? It may seem that gaining
something and losing something of the same value has the same effect on behavior. Surprisingly,
that is not the case. Humans tend to be more mindful of being stripped of an object than gaining
possession of that object. Completely encapsulating that thought is

Does the purchase of a swing merit the space that it occupies?
However, among the most vital decisions that you ll require to make regarding nursery furnishings

Infants spend a great part of their time sleeping, and thus your little one is going to use up much

Justinian Influence On Julius Caesar

Rome and joined the army and joined the palace guard eventually being appointed the head of the

Violence Against Women Is An Old Fashioned Practice
Throughout the years, violence against women has become a national issue, often referred to as a
hidden epidemic by Amnesty International, which spreads through social, cultural and ethnic areas.
The cost of sexual and domestic violence creates a ripple effect throughout today s society; for
example, discrimination of race, ethnicity, and age prevents women from obtaining any form of
justice. Violenceagainst women is an old fashioned practice, but in the last decade it finally
received recognition as a serious human rights issue. Violence against womenis categorized into two
parts: social violence, which occurs in public places between strangers, and domestic violence,
which takes place within households and usually between family members. A prevalent and
particular problem area includes psychological issues; women become depressed, isolate
themselves, develop sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), commit suicide, depend on drugs and
alcohol, develop poor reproductive health, and become incapable of supporting their families. Men
and children are at risk of becoming perpetrators due to exposure of violence within households, low
education, and childhood abuse. Education plays an important role in today s society about
spreading awareness of violence against women. The World Health Organization, the Avon

Antisocial Personality Disorder Essay
Abstract
People have always been curious on what makes a serial killer; after all, it is difficult to imagine
murdering multiple people and not feeling an ounce of guilt or emotion afterwards. In severe
cases, this is what a person having antisocial personality disorder is capable of. Infamous serial
killers such as Jeffrey Dahmer and Charles Manson were believed to have this disorder.
Personality disorders in general can range from mild to severe in the afflicter s actions, but

Suburban Policing Techniques
Community policing techniques may vary from suburban communities and inner cities because of
the demographics of the regions. Community policing in suburban communities can certainly
contribute to a greater decrease in crime because of the close quarters police officers have with the
members of the community. Community policing is designed as a proactive approach in reducing
crimein the community. A collaborative relationship between law enforcementand individuals only
strengthens the trust with the police. Indeed this relationship is embedded in suburban areas because
policer officers are constantly personalizing their response calls. In addition, Law enforcement
agencies in suburban community may rely on more financial base resources in contributing to the

Police departments emphasize their techniques on response time rather than interaction with the

crime before it occurs. So in fact, there is a larger representation of police officers patrolling the
streets of areas of high crime rates. The elements of crime in inner cities are far more likely to
occur than in suburban communities. As recently stated, police officers in inner cities encounter a
large population to govern, in fact they deal with various ethnic groups. In this case, police
departments in inner cities typically adopt police officers of similar ethnic backgrounds. This is
important because this allows the police officers to communicate with the people in neighborhoods

One place that stood out to me and really struck me was one of the first scene in the movie. The
Kilauea Volcano, Hawaii really stood out to me first because I really think volcanos are extremely
interesting. However, the aspects that really stuck out to me about this certain volcano and scene
was the fact that is was just free flowing. When you see this volcano from a safe distance or from
the film you see the vibrant color and all the beauty that is possesses. The volcano is recently
peaceful while watching the lava flow freely in the film. The free flowing of the lava can
represent many things, but one thing that I think Fricke may have been trying to prove was that
time is like lava, the lava never stops for anything or anybody. Likewise, time is never ending and
it never stops for anything even though sometimes we wish it would stop for just a moment. Also
while looking at the volcano and the lava flowing we think about the destruction that what appears
to be peaceful lava can cause. Just like in the world we live in today, things that we come in contact
with may seem peaceful but underneath that beauty is

Industrialization In Canada
The growth and development of Canadian society is closely linked to plants. Canada is a large
exporter of grain and forest products among other plant products. The worldwide market for grain
in 1998 was valued at 15.1 billion dollars US; the worldwide market for first products in 1998 was
123 billion dollars US. These industries represent billions of dollars and a large percentage of
Canadas economy. In 2013 agriculture generated 106.9 billion dollars, accounting for 6.7% of
Canada s GDP (1).A further 19.8 billion dollars was generated by forestry that same year
accounting for 1.25% of Canada s GDP (2). For Canada to grow economically our agricultural and
forestry sectors also must grow. The forest industry is also very important as building

No Juice Monologue
No Juice!! Low battery. Exactly the two words I didn t want to see right now. When having no
juice you wouldn t be able to text your ladies or do nothing on your phone. When your phone
doesn t have juice that s when your pocket juice or portable charger comes in handy. And if you
don t know, well, now you do. The struggle is real. It s tough being that dude out here in the
streets trying to please these girls when you have no juice. No connection to the world, nothing
to pass the time, and most importantly no way to call up my ladies. One weekend, I was
working on scheduling time with my three ladies: my main girl, my side chick, and my side side
woman. You know how they say that Karma is a female dog? Well, it is! I called one of my ladies

table. I m so sorry for being late, Baby, I got caught up trying to look good for you, I crooned to her

me back? You text me? My phone is dead because I forgot to plug it in, I explained with my

happy that I had dodged that bullet, I started to relax and ordered dinner. Halfway through our

Narrative Essay About My Butterfly
There was a time when my butterfly flew away. Before, I met a very special person. Really, my
attention was on his easy going personality, goodness and charisma. On those Summer days, the
garden was full of colored flowers. Constantly, the sun went down and the moon came out; the
wind was fresh and our hearts betrayed. After, I met with my butterfly in the back room.
Automatically, he embraced me in his warm arms; my heart shake and my desires sprouted. There
were shivering and sweating. However, inside the small chamber lusting vanished; every time, I
realized, it went too far. Every morning, he looked at me and apologized. we didn t mean to hurt
anybody; it was just a magic attraction. In many other occasions, I met with my butterfly in the
back room to talk and share about feelings.
One day, in the small alcove, my butterfly touched my neck and hair, I never met a person like
you, you are so different , he said; in a sweet and slow tone of voice. He pulled me into his arm,
we touched each other, we detailed how much we missed and loved. There was a front window,
where we walked to see the flowers in the garden. A white sheer hanged from the highest point of
the wall, it flew all around, the wind blew and the curtains fell on top of us. This is when he
kissed me, ecstasy was so high; it was difficult to stop. Silently, the flowers smell so sweet and the
wind kept blowing, while, the sheers wrapped us; we laughed and hug each other. Then, I removed
the sheers from the

What Are The 4 Laws Of Thermodynamics
The four fundamental laws of thermodynamics are used to define how physical quantities behave
under various circumstances, these include energy, entropy, and temperature. The First Law of
Thermodynamics states that energy in the universe is always conserved, therefore it cannot be
created or destroyed, and it can only be transformed from one form to another. The second law of
thermodynamicsstates that entropyof isolated systems always increases, this means that in all
processes of energyexchange, if no energy is introduced to or leaves a system, the sum of potential
energy will be less than initial condition. The third law of thermodynamics states that the entropy of
a system is maintained as the temperature decreases to absolute zero. The fourth law of
thermodynamics defines temperature equilibrium between systems.
The first law of thermodynamics defines that energy can be transformed but not destroyed. It s
used to define the internal energy contained in a system. It s formulated by pointing out the
change in internal energy in system minus work and heat that add and subtract energy in the
system. Moreover, the second law helps to clarify different ways in which motors change heat into
mechanical work, for example in steam turbines and car engines. The third law, also referred to as
Nernst law, provides a basis for calculating absolute entropy value of substances and an analysis of
phase and chemical equilibrium.
Fossil fuels are the most widely used energy source in

Essay about Jaques s Perspective in Shakespeare s As You...
Jaques s Perspective in As You Like It
A cynic s cynic might declare Jaques no better than the guy who lurks in corners at a cocktail
party, lobbing witty barbs at anyone unlucky enough to catch his eye. But this assessment robs
Shakespeare s comedy of its sociological depth; what might be pleasant fluff about young people in
love is enhanced by Jaques s ability to make stern judgments about the world, yet still respect the
people who comprise it.
Indeed, Jaques observes astutely from the sidelines. He separates himself from what he considers
the frivolity of making suitable marriage matches. But Jaques s speeches are not merely
Shakespeare s devices for explication. There is a psychological middle ground ... Show more

He finds delight in the carefree demeanor of Touchstone and makes several references to his own
desire to own a motley coat. But Jaques sees more in the personae of fools than silliness, and herein
lies his nobility.
He quotes Touchstone s ruminations about time, And so from hour to hour we ripe, and ripe
/And then from hour to hour we rot, and rot (II.7 26 27) and then amends Touchstone s
observation when he discusses the seven stages of man s life. In summing up human experience
with the play metaphor, Jaques brings everyone into the fold: rich and poor, city and country
folk, noblemen and serfs. Jaques speaks out for the meek in his speech about taxation: What
woman in the city do I name/When that I say the city woman bears/The cost of princes on
unworthy shoulders? (II.7 74 76). Though Jaques himself is not poor, he can see beyond his own
perspective and find worth in people of all economic and class spheres.
The compassionate yet comic aspect of Jaques appears in the lines he and Orlando exchange in
the forest. Jaques jokes, Let s meet as little as we can (III.2 250) and Orlando retorts, I do desire
we may be better strangers (251). There is a natural affinity between the two; Jaques enjoys
Orlando s company. As they part, Jaques remarks, Will you sit down with me and we two will rail

The film starts by the two detectives arriving by boat accompanied by dark creepy clouds and
terrible weather which leads to hurricane type winds and stormy rain through the film. This helps
contribute to the already eerie and dark environment of the mental hospital/institution. The dull
grey lighting of the sky with the dramatic rocking of the boat and loud fog horns puts you on
edge from the get go. From the very beginning, it is apparent something strange is taking place on
Shutter Island and the director leaves the audience to gain the experience of watching everything
unfold. The setting of the movie is just as important as any other aspect of the film. The fact that
it takes place in a mental hospital/institution on a remote island surrounded by rocky cliffs, huge
waves, caves, steeps along with a creepy lighthouse, where it is said cruel experiments take place,
screams suspense and thrill. The island is surrounded with tall brick walls laced with electric
fencing and only one port to leave and arrive. The facility itself gives off an eerie feel with its

consume its inhabitants. Flickering, somewhat, unreliable lighting and approaching storm adds to
sketchy scenery. I feel this makes the audience feel at unease throughout the film, as if

The Use Of Control And Its Effects On People And Affect...
Politicking is the actions of using power and information to move resources towards preferred
outcomes for your fellow colleagues and/or the organization s interests. Politicking is used to
influence people and affect decisions. Locus of control is related to a person s belief on how much
influence they think they have over external events and outcomes. The higher someone s locus of
controlis, the more politicking they participate in because they believe that the more engaged,
assertive, and friendly they are to those they interact with, the more control they will have on final
decisions.
The three dimensions that should be considered before engaging in politicking are: Analyzing and
knowing your own strengths and weaknesses; Reading and understanding others verbal and
nonverbal language; and Assessing accurately the organization and its goals. Intentional
understanding of these areas will help you develop a politicking strategy to empower yourself, your
coworkers, benefiting the bottom line while accomplishing important organizational goals.
Having a clearer understanding of what politicking is and how individuals utilize these strengths
can definitely help me understand how to use politicking to my advantage in future business
interactions. I have engaged in politicking without understanding what it was that I was essentially
doing. For instance, while employed at a credit union in the headquarters office, I often befriend

The American Express ( Axp )
Background
In May 15 American Express (AXP) launched a coalition loyalty program called Plenti. Under
coalition loyalty programs, members can earn and redeem points by shopping at participating
merchants (e.g., Exxon, Macys, Rite Aid and ATT.) The program helps consumers to earn rewards
faster and lead to a higher level of engagement with a program which provides merchants an
opportunity to attract new customers and run cross promotional campaigns. However, the biggest
challenge in launching the program was signing up merchants and building an economic case for
shifting away from proprietary to collaborative program.
AXP was in negotiations with Rite Aid to join the program. Under their old loyalty program
(Wellness+), Rite Aid issued reward dollars (+UPs).The dollars could be used for purchase within
their stores over next two weeks, while in Plenti program the points (1 point = 1 cents) are valid
for three years and can be redeemed at any participating merchant. Rite Aid was concerned that if
they joined Plenti, customers will continue to earn points at Rite Aid but with more redemption
options and longer validity, the redemptions will be skewed towards other merchants especially the
Grocer Partner. In effect, they will be subsidizing a loyalty program for the Grocer.
Challenge
As part of the negotiations, our team was tasked to identify and propose Performance Guarantees to
address Rite Aid s concerns.

Hudson s Bay Company Swot Analysis

Company has evolved to handle joint ventures, but not all of them turn into successes.
Hudson s Bay Co., which reported a $54 million loss in the first quarter of 2015 as Target Canada
liquidated its merchandise, now has another competitor nipping at its heels Amazon.ca (Kopun,
2015, para.1). With this recent pitfall, concerns about the acquisition are alarmingly high to the
staff which is understandable. Many employees are worried about losing their job due to past
events. Hudson s Bay Company is cutting 265 jobs in corporate offices across North America,
including in Toronto. The changes are expected to bring an annualized cost savings totaling $75
million in the 2016 fiscal year. (Lu, 2015, para.1 10). Most of that money is going to pay for
current debt the company has accumulated via Target fiasco. Partners in a general partnership are...

Haitian Culture Reflection Paper
On January 12, 2010, an earthquake of 7.3 on the Richter scale devastated the Haiti island,
leaving more than 316,000 dead, 350 injured and more than 1.5 million homeless, according to
data provided by Haitian government. Because of this situation many of the Hattians decided to
migrate outside their country in the pursuit of a better life with the promise of an American
dream. But after 2010, U.S. authorities began to deny them refuge leaving them homeless in the
borders of Mexico. Now, more than 4,000 Hattians are living and working in Tijuana. Since the
arrival of the Hattians, I felt the need to know more about their life and culture. So I decided to
go to one of the many Haitian restaurants that exist today in Tijuana and learn about their culture.
Los Haitianos are the name of the restaurant located in the new Haitian neighborhood in the
center of the city. When I arrived I felt a little afraid to be the only woman sitting at the table, but
after a few minutes I started talking and feel more comfortable. I ordered the typical Haitian food,
fried chicken, rice and beans served with a slightly spicy red sauce, by the way was delicious and
cheap. Sitting in front of me was a 25 year old Haitian from Puerto Principe. I asked him if he
spoke Spanish and he said yes, I told him if I could ask some question about his culture for my
communication class and in return I offered to pay for his food. He answered yes of course. So we

Bart Blachford, the RCMP member with primary conduct of the forensic investigation into the
explosion of the Kanishka. The underwater images of many of the unrecovered targets were
converted into computer aided design ( CAD ) images, which in turn were used to simulate certain
important targets from the aft fuselage of the aircraft. Under the supervision of the RCMP, these
simulated targets were assembled with the actual recovered wreckage in a partial reconstruction of
the Kanishka at a warehouse in the Lower Mainland as an aid to understanding the technical expert
evidence regarding the destruction of the aircraft. Experts presented portions of their evidence at
this warehouse during the trial and referred extensively to the reconstruction in demonstrating their
respective theories. The significance of this expert evidence lies primarily in their differing
opinions regarding the location of the bomb that precipitated the destruction of the Kanishka. The
Crown theory, supported by the opinion evidence of Professor Christopher Peel, is that it was
located in Baggage Area 52, which contained the M. Singh bag. The defence theory, supported by
the opinion evidence of Dr. Edward Trimble and Mr. Frank Taylor, is that it was located some five
feet forward of that location in Baggage Area 51, containing luggage checked in at Toronto. A
conclusion that the defence evidence raises a reasonable doubt with respect to the Crown s bomb
location would fundamentally undermine

The Leadership Of Odysseus In Homer s Odyssey
Homer demonstrates leadership through the epic hero character Odysseus by illustrating his
courageous and brave traits on difficult situations. As Odysseus and his crew were facing the
sirens, Odysseus felt power and confidence, enhancing his strategies. When Odysseus s shipmates
cowered in fear of the sirens, Odysseuskept his calmness and gave orders: Get the oarshafts in your
hands... hit these breaking seas... the rudders are your duty... steer for that head land... (1135).
Even though Odysseus s shipmates were given advice about the sirens from Circe, the author
explains how the epic hero Odysseus took control and told his shipmates what to do. Odysseus kept
his nerve and wit in fearful situations because of his natural leader personality. Even... Show more

Opponents say that Odysseus uses his accomplishments to gain fame and glory. However,
Odysseus would have never thought of that due to the dangerous situations he faces that may
cost his life. For example, as Odysseus and his crew were continuing on their journey, they
encountered the Sirens who had lovely voices in ardor appealing over the water made me crave
to listen, and I tried to say Untie me! to the crew, jerking my brows; but they bent steady to the
oars (1134). Homer portrays the epic hero, Odysseus, as the element, victorious from a
dangerous situation because the Sirens were powerful enough to bewitch any men with their
voices. Nonetheless, Odysseus followed the advice given from Circe and secured himself by
wrapping his arms around the pole of the boat and covering the ears of his crew members.
Odysseus knew how dangerous this could ve been, but still decided to risk his and crew member
s lives and sail through it. Another reason would be Odysseus s raging pride that can make
others in danger. While this is not entirely inaccurate, he does have an understanding of the
responsibilities it takes to be a leader. For instance, in order to persuade Zeus to help Odysseus,
Athena defends how he fought only to save his life, to bring his shipmates home (1104).
Leadership is displayed in a way when the author references how Odysseus was a brave and
unselfish epic hero by putting his shipmates before him. This could suggest that he cares deeply
for his shipmates and feels responsible if something were to happen to them on his behalf. Critics
may have wondered if Odysseus is truly an epic hero due to his true intentions and how his pride
can put others danger, but his willingness to overcome these tough obstacles and face these kinds of
situations is only something Odysseus can

The Impact of Prejudice and Discrimination on Society
Equal opportunities Assignment 1
This report will attempt to explain the meaning and implications of the terms Prejudice,
Discrimination, Stereotyping, and Scapegoat. It will also look at two case studies in order to
illustrate prejudice and discrimination in action.
Prejudice and Discrimination
Prejudice and Discrimination are difficult to separate as they typically appear together. Prejudice is
defined as A preconceived opinion . while Discrimination is defined as Biased or unfavourable
treatment , both taken from Oxford Dictionary and Thesaurus 3 (Oxford University Press, 2001).
Discrimination converts the mental process of prejudice into action. It is wildly accepted that

After WWI Germany was a shadow of her former self; her economy was limping along like an
injured animal. By the time Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in 1933 there were six million
unemployed workers in Germany. Germany was in the grips of a depression. The German people
were angry, they hated the Allies for doing this to them. Hatred was growing throughout the minds
of the German people. It is conceivable that Hitler knew this, if he did know this it is also
conceivable that he could direct his people anger and hatred inward. The Jews were a suitable
enemy in Hitler s mind. By providing his people with a common enemy he was able to unify
them behind him. His mighty propaganda machine started to roll, he blamed the Jews for
Germany s defeat in WWI, he blamed them for German s many social and economic problems.
He frightened the ruling classes by accusing the Jews of being in league with the communists.
German Jews were made to wear armbands with Stars of David on them. They were beaten in
the streets by groups of thugs. Jewish business were targeted; they were forced to paint Stars of
David on the doors, guards were placed at the doors in order to deter people from entering. Hitler
even got his message to the children of Germany; Children at schools were taught specifically anti
Semitic ideas. Jewish school children were openly ridiculed by

There was a positive reaction from market after the announcement of poison pills when the board was composed majorly of outside directors and negative when it was not (Brickely et al., 1994). Aircraft Carriers Lost in Battle Due to their importance aircraft carriers were considered a priority target, and as a result, many were lost during World War II. Most were sunk by aircraft, like the battleships they were replacing. Most in the pacific theater were lost in during the Battle of Midway or the Coral Sea. The loss of the carriers, especially the Japanese carriers, had a significant effect on the outcome of the war. The most common was dive bombers placing large holes in the flight deck, along with damaging fires. However, this type of damage was easily repaired. A more damaging type of damage was torpedo damage. While one or two strikes was usually not enough to sink a large carrier, it could cause the ship to lean to one side, called listing. When the listing angle became too high, aircraft could roll off the deck and were unable to land (Navy). • 6. Battle Of Arabia Essay Lawrence of Arabia bolstered the Allied Powers through the capture of Damascus by reinforcing General Allenby s forces and in the process he demonstrated his innovative leadership. Wanting to advance north against the Turks, Allenby required assistance from the Arabs to attack the Fourth Army of the Turks east of the JordanRiver. To accomplish that, Allenby needed Lawrence, who seemed to be the only person who could get the Arabs to fight in an organized way (Korda 379). Considering Allenby s request, Lawrence altered the proposed strategy to have the Arabs attack Ma an and the southern railway. Instead, Lawrence believed it would be best to attack the railway from the north of Ma an. (Korda 379). Furthermore, knowing that the Turks would... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These tribes rallied with Allenby s army and resulted in a defeat of the Ottomans at Deraa (Mack 163). Importantly, this success at Deraa diminished the already dwindling Turks forces, setting them up for defeat at Damascus. On September 19th, the day that Allenby captured Damascus, the Turkish forces were bombarded for fifteen minutes at 4:30 am by 385 guns. This full scale infantry assault with artillery barrage drove the Turks from their bunker. So firmly had the Turks been convinced that the assault would be toward the Jordan River that they had thinned out their infantry on the coastal plain, and their defenses quickly crumbled (Korda 411). At about nine in the morning on Tuesday, (October 1,) Lawrence and Stirling drove into Damascus to find scenes of jubilation. Nuri Shaalan and Nasir had already entered the city, and the narrow streets of the old city of Damascus were aflame with joy and enthusiasm (Barr 297). After the successful assault on Damascus, presses reported that Colonel Lawrence played a part of the greatest importance in the Palestine victory. The audience plays a crucial part here, as they are active participants. It is important that all participants be knowledgeable, open minded, and respectful. Lastly, the logical perspective relies on the audience s knowledge of logical patterns such as a cause effect reasoning. The audience in this case, acts as disinterested and is more of a third party judge (Rybacki 10). Regardless of perspective, the argumentation for the intended audience must abide by certain ethical standards. Argumentation is based around the conscious choices of what to say to influence the audience. Advocates have an ethical responsibility not to deceive their audiences or other arguers by using obscure or ambiguous language, confusing patterns of organization, or ideas encumbered by nonessential information or ideas (Rybacki 16). With this said, choosing clear and concrete language in an organized structure gives the arguer assurance that their message was not misinterpreted. Honesty is also extremely important in a successful argument, and the arguer should know their topic thoroughly to avoid false information. Moreover, stating the opposing viewpoints allows for a more effective and ethical discussion. • 8. Allusions In Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales In the middle ages, society assumed that friars were always impeccable. Most friars expressed that they served Christ with their preaching, blessing, and begging for gifts. Chaucer mocks the assumption about religious figures by labeling religious figures in The Canterbury Tales as hypocrites. In The Summoner s Tale of The Canterbury Tales , Chaucer uses allusion, imagery, and the archetypal theme of good vs. evil in order to depict the friar as a hypocritical religious dignitary. Chaucer uses allusions to numerous Biblical figures, such as Satan and Christ Jesus. The friar, while presenting his lecture, references countless individuals and stories from the Bible. He does so in order to tell Thomas, the ill man, that his anger and spite have been the reasons he is so frail. You lie here full of anger, full of ire, / With which the devil you re your heart afire, / And chide this humble innocent your wife, / Who s been so meek and patient in her strife (1981 1985). Chaucer uses a quote on line 2122 that says: He would like to see the friar on fire. That quote is significant because Thomas irritation by the friar has been increasing. Another important significance of the quote shows how the friar has the potential to be more devil like, full of ire. The friar s potential becomes a reality when Thomas farted in the friar s hand. As ridiculous as it sounds, the friar felt like the fart was the devil possessing him. He went forth on his way consumed with ire (2158). Ire epitomized evil and the devil. The friar had become evil, representing malevolence. The anger in him raging like a fire (2166). The anger continues, showing how the friar s anger continued building up within. • 9. Piette s House At Montafoucault The painting Piette s House at Montfoucault is a piece of impressionism and landscape art. In the painting, it shows a someone s house in the winter time, two people standing in front of it, and many trees in front of it. It was painted by Camille Pissarro, during the winter of 1874, when he visited his friend, Ludovic Piette Montfoucault s house. It was painted with oil paints and is currently residing at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. The art has many different textures, colours/values, and lines. The lines are all thin and broken or curved, except for the tree trunks which are thick and straight and the lines around the houses, which are straight. The lines do not outline the objects. The textures around the trees, the snow, and the humans all feel very soft, however, around the houses, where they look rough and look like if you were to touch it, it would feel like real bricks. The painting is mainly made up of white, and bright colours, with some darker colours at the areas with shade, the leaves of the trees, and the roofs of the houses. The colours make the painting look realistic, and it makes it seem like the place is cold. The form in this painting is 3D. • 10. The Prisoner of War Ethic Early on in the semester, I have found that Chapter 12 has been one of the more intriguing sections to read. After deciding on a topic for the paper, I combed the book for interesting topics that could relate to the prisoner of war ethic. In many ways I started my journey with Chapter 12; making it all the more fitting that I end here as well. Chapter 12 and the section on Prima Facie Duties cover a good range of personal subjects. This chapter espouses the ideal that communication is not confined to national or even international borders. Kales Human Nature, for example, proposes the importance of the human spirit over cultural boundaries. Though it is not easy, we must communicate with others in a way that does not reflect back on our own biases and stereotypes in other forms of intercultural communication. And I am personally fascinated by the concept of moral exclusion. The ability to which we are able to extend rights to other people is reflective of where they lie in our sphere of moral consideration, I believe. One of the eight stages of genocide dehumanization comes to mind. As the book notes, this dehumanization is reflected in communication. Communication, such as propaganda, that lowers the status of others exemplifies this dehumanization. We have a tremendous capacity, to turn people into less than us, and once you do that, you can justify a hell of a lot of awfulness. • 11. Madness In Hamlet Essay The theme of madness holds deep roots in literary works. Understanding the theme of madness is key. This theme opens a window to the hidden mind of not only the character but also the author. Hamlet by William Shakespeare and The Bear: A Joke in one act by Anton Chekhov use this theme throughout the course of each play. In Hamlet, Prince Hamlet feigns madness in an effort to catch his murderous uncle. Slowly, the lines of what is real and what is fictionbegin to blur. In the play The Bear: A Joke in one act, Mrs. Popov begins to drive herself mad. Her husband has died, and she spends her days mourning him. Popov in The Bear a Joke in One Act by Anton Chekhov. The theme of madness is clearly demonstrated through Prince Hamlet in the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare. P.J. Aldus speaks about Shakespeare s use of madness in the article Madness. In this article Aldus states that Shakespeare knew a good deal about madness in the usual sense of insanity can be believed from both external fact and internal evidence from the plays (Aldus 209). Shakespeare s use of madness in his plays shows the greater factors at work in the world. Madness is not only caused by mental instabilities but also by the environment one lives in. This later point rings the truest in Hamlet s case. Hamlet s madness was not caused by his mind but by the hand life dealt him. When Hamlet learns the truth of his father s death, he acts mad to convict his uncle. Hamlet s madness is shown first hand when Polonius comments on it to the King and Queen. • 14. Rhetorical Analysis Of The Novel The use of irony in the novel also contributes to its postmodernism. Many postmodernists treat serious subjects jovially to distance themselves from the difficult subject. They evoke black humor and different types of irony to offer critics of society and to display how society should not fear dark and somber things. DeLillo sprinkles irony all throughout his story using it even at the most serious of times. He uses it to show how the characters should not feardeath and how the characters ignore danger when the smoke alarm went off in the hallway upstairs, either to let us know the battery had just died or because the house was on fire (8) and they did nothing about the possible imminent danger. DeLillo also uses irony to mock certain characters and expose the ridiculousness of certain beliefs and customs. When Jack s boss advises him to change his name and appearance to gain more prestige, the change they make is pretentious as it is the same name only without one letter, we finally agreed that I should event an extra initial and call myself J.A.K Gladney (16). DeLillo continues to ridicule society and its principles by exposing absurdity such as Jack not knowing German despite being the founder of Hitler studies and his college requiring all Hitler majors to understand some of the language, I had long tried to conceal the fact that I did not know German (31). The use of irony not only gives the novel a lighter tone, but also exposes DeLillo s critique of society ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She was able to influence her husband so strongly that she convinced him willingly into committing murder willingly; Shakespeare displays the strength of power that women have the ability to possess if they wish, he conveys women as sneaky and willing to result to extreme tactics to get their own way; it shows just how dangerous women can be. Shakespeare uses Lady Macbeth as an icon for powerful women. Lady Macbeth is a complex and intriguing character in Shakespeare s play, Macbeth. In the play we see her in these two main ways. The reader may feel a certain animosity towards Lady Macbeth throughout the first few acts as her personality appears more and more distasteful, in spite of this towards the end she has a serious breakdown over the guilt that torments her, even in her sleep, regarding her hand in Duncan s untimely death. • 32. Violence Against Women Is An Old Fashioned Practice Throughout the years, violence against women has become a national issue, often referred to as a hidden epidemic by Amnesty International, which spreads through social, cultural and ethnic areas. The cost of sexual and domestic violence creates a ripple effect throughout today s society; for example, discrimination of race, ethnicity, and age prevents women from obtaining any form of justice. Violenceagainst women is an old fashioned practice, but in the last decade it finally received recognition as a serious human rights issue. Violence against womenis categorized into two parts: social violence, which occurs in public places between strangers, and domestic violence, which takes place within households and usually between family members. A prevalent and particular problem area includes psychological issues; women become depressed, isolate themselves, develop sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), commit suicide, depend on drugs and alcohol, develop poor reproductive health, and become incapable of supporting their families. Men and children are at risk of becoming perpetrators due to exposure of violence within households, low education, and childhood abuse. Education plays an important role in today s society about spreading awareness of violence against women. A collaborative relationship between law enforcementand individuals only strengthens the trust with the police. As recently stated, police officers in inner cities encounter a large population to govern, in fact they deal with various ethnic groups. In this case, police departments in inner cities typically adopt police officers of similar ethnic backgrounds. • 43. What Are The 4 Laws Of Thermodynamics The four fundamental laws of thermodynamics are used to define how physical quantities behave under various circumstances, these include energy, entropy, and temperature. The First Law of Thermodynamics states that energy in the universe is always conserved, therefore it cannot be created or destroyed, and it can only be transformed from one form to another. The second law of thermodynamicsstates that entropyof isolated systems always increases, this means that in all processes of energyexchange, if no energy is introduced to or leaves a system, the sum of potential energy will be less than initial condition. The third law of thermodynamics states that the entropy of a system is maintained as the temperature decreases to absolute zero. The fourth law of thermodynamics defines temperature equilibrium between systems. The first law of thermodynamics defines that energy can be transformed but not destroyed. It s used to define the internal energy contained in a system. It s formulated by pointing out the change in internal energy in system minus work and heat that add and subtract energy in the system. Moreover, the second law helps to clarify different ways in which motors change heat into mechanical work, for example in steam turbines and car engines. The third law, also referred to as Nernst law, provides a basis for calculating absolute entropy value of substances and an analysis of phase and chemical equilibrium. The defence theory, supported by the opinion evidence of Dr. Edward Trimble and Mr. Frank Taylor, is that it was located some five feet forward of that location in Baggage Area 51, containing luggage checked in at Toronto. A conclusion that the defence evidence raises a reasonable doubt with respect to the Crown s bomb location would fundamentally undermine ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 53. The Leadership Of Odysseus In Homer s Odyssey Homer demonstrates leadership through the epic hero character Odysseus by illustrating his courageous and brave traits on difficult situations. As Odysseus and his crew were facing the sirens, Odysseus felt power and confidence, enhancing his strategies. When Odysseus s shipmates cowered in fear of the sirens, Odysseuskept his calmness and gave orders: Get the oarshafts in your hands... hit these breaking seas... the rudders are your duty... steer for that head land... (1135). Even though Odysseus s shipmates were given advice about the sirens from Circe, the author explains how the epic hero Odysseus took control and told his shipmates what to do. Odysseus kept his nerve and wit in fearful situations because of his natural leader personality. Even... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Opponents say that Odysseus uses his accomplishments to gain fame and glory. However, Odysseus would have never thought of that due to the dangerous situations he faces that may cost his life. For example, as Odysseus and his crew were continuing on their journey, they encountered the Sirens who had lovely voices in ardor appealing over the water made me crave to listen, and I tried to say Untie me! to the crew, jerking my brows; but they bent steady to the oars (1134). Homer portrays the epic hero, Odysseus, as the element, victorious from a dangerous situation because the Sirens were powerful enough to bewitch any men with their voices. Nonetheless, Odysseus followed the advice given from Circe and secured himself by wrapping his arms around the pole of the boat and covering the ears of his crew members. Odysseus knew how dangerous this could ve been, but still decided to risk his and crew member s lives and sail through it. Another reason would be Odysseus s raging pride that can make others in danger. While this is not entirely inaccurate, he does have an understanding of the responsibilities it takes to be a leader. For instance, in order to persuade Zeus to help Odysseus, Athena defends how he fought only to save his life, to bring his shipmates home (1104). Leadership is displayed in a way when the author references how Odysseus was a brave and unselfish epic hero by putting his shipmates before him. This could suggest that he cares deeply for his shipmates and feels responsible if something were to happen to them on his behalf. Critics may have wondered if Odysseus is truly an epic hero due to his true intentions and how his pride can put others danger, but his willingness to overcome these tough obstacles and face these kinds of situations is only something Odysseus can ... After WWI Germany was a shadow of her former self; her economy was limping along like an injured animal. By the time Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in 1933 there were six million unemployed workers in Germany. Germany was in the grips of a depression. The German people were angry, they hated the Allies for doing this to them. Hatred was growing throughout the minds of the German people. It is conceivable that Hitler knew this, if he did know this it is also conceivable that he could direct his people anger and hatred inward. The Jews were a suitable enemy in Hitler s mind. By providing his people with a common enemy he was able to unify them behind him. His mighty propaganda machine started to roll, he blamed the Jews for Germany s defeat in WWI, he blamed them for German s many social and economic problems. He frightened the ruling classes by accusing the Jews of being in league with the communists. German Jews were made to wear armbands with Stars of David on them. They were beaten in the streets by groups of thugs. Jewish business were targeted; they were forced to paint Stars of David on the doors, guards were placed at the doors in order to deter people from entering. Hitler even got his message to the children of Germany; Children at schools were taught specifically anti Semitic ideas. Jewish school children were openly ridiculed by ...
