According to the surgeon general, young people who see smoking portrayed in
movies are 2 3 times more likely to start smoking themselves. One of the goals of
the Healthy People 2020 program is to reduce onscreen smoking in movies and TV
shows, especially in youth rated material, which is rated as G, PG, and PG 13. From
2005 to 2010, there was a steady decrease in the number of onscreen smoking
incidents in these films, but this decline stopped after 2010. If the decline had
continued, all youth rated films would have contained no smoking incidents by 2015.
That would have meant a huge reduction in teen smoking.

As we can see from this graph, PG 13 movies from 2010 2016 showed no net
decrease in smoking incidents. G/PG rated movies had an 87% decrease in smoking
incidents, while they increased in PG 13 movies by 43%.

The 6 major motion picture companies already have policies in place to limit the
number of smoking incidents in youth rated movies. However, we saw in the graph
that these policies are not helping with PG 13 movies. Stricter guidelines should be

Another solution is to give any movie with a smoking depiction an R rating.
Exceptions would be historical depictions or if the film showed smoking in a
negative light. A study on films from 1998 2003 indicated that this R rating could
decrease teen smoking by 18%.

My Road Trip
I have been on many road trips in my life. For as long as I can remember, summer
vacation was piling in the car and driving across the country, setting up camp
wherever we went. I would watch my mom in the weeks and months before it,
carefully planning every step of the way, even though it would often come
unravelling halfway through. The best part of vacations are the improvised parts,
whether it s taking a day trip to Disney World, the tickets bought the day before,
driving down to San Francisco for no good reason, or watching a movie in a tiny
movie theater on a day that it rained. Planning is crucial, I learned, but you should
never expect anything to be set in stone. My theoretical road trip would be taken
with my two sisters and last ten days, and would be a mad dash west towards
California, which has many wonderful National Parks for us to camp in. The
National Parksystem is a wonderfully western phenomenon, and throughout the
states west of the Appalachians, there is an amazing diversity of places to camp
and hike in. There will hopefully be no hotels on this trip, only tents. We will have
two hundred dollars put aside for grocery shopping, which we will use to buy food
that we will cook with. There will also be another three hundred set aside for eating
out. There will also be four hundred dollars for emergencies, whether that be a car
breakdown or staying in a hotel. For our ten day trip, we will have to pay for a
campsite each night. The practical and wonderful thing about camping is that the
average campsite costs only ten dollars, so that will only cost us about one
hundred dollars. Hiking, our main activity on the trip, will cost us nothing as well.
My family also owns a pass that gets us into National Parks for free, so that will
cost us nothing. The car we will take is an Hyundai Elantra, which has been highly
reliable in the past, and the average cost of gas per mile is twelve cents. Lucy and I
will switch driving, while Sadie will be in charge of navigation, using atlases and
Google Maps. The first day of the trip, we will leave Kansas early in the morning
and drive all the way to Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado. In the usual
