One of the most prominent influences of art throughout history has been politics. The
50s through 70s in America are a great example of this, for so many of this era s
songs were arguments against America s involvement in the Vietnam War and
criticisms of American politics at the time. However, this phenomenon was prominent
long before the Vietnam War and was not just an American trend; in fact, two of the
most influential and famous pieces of the early 20th century were products of
political oppression on the other side of the world. Both Paul Hindemith, under the
Nazi Regime, and Dmitri Shostakovich, under the communist reign of Stalin,
managed to fight political oppression through their music. The two composers had
very different ways of doing so. Hindemith wrote two separate pieces, one that
directly opposed the Nazi regime, and another that was so nationalistic he was
forgiven for his previous mistakes , whereas Shostakovich wrote a single piece which
seemed just as nationalistic as Hindemith s symphony yet it had a deeper, much more

The act of being blindly obedient is, while frowned upon, widely common
throughout military branches. Young trainees are taught to always follow orders,
and never question their authority. In the film A Few Good Men, this question is
brought up in the murder case of Private William Santiago. Private Louden
Downey and Lance Corporal Harold Dawson were ordered to perform a Code Red on
Santiago because he broke the Marine Corps code. This code red ordered ended up
killing Private Santiago. The case against Dawson and Downey was sitting on the
fact that the two soldiers simply followed an order. This is not unlike the My Lai
massacredescribed in the article, The My Lai Massacre: A Military Crime of

Most people consider themselves as rational, reasoning individuals who make
decisions after considering the facts at hand. Research suggests that this is often not
the case, with implicit bias at work shaping one s responses. Researchers at Cornell

Slotnick, 2017). Predictors of implicit bias include socio economic status, gender,
ethnicity, childhood experience, and cultural experience (Cooley, Payne Phillips,
2013). Unlike explicit bias which reflects attitudes or beliefs that one endorses on a
conscious level, implicit bias refers to attitudes or stereotypes that affect our
understanding, actions and decisions in an unconscious manner resulting from subtle
cognitive processes that often operate at a level below conscious awareness and
without intentional control (Gyan, n.d.). Of these, implicit gender bias affects the
health and social wellbeing of women, as well as disadvantages women economically
and in the workplace. As such implicit gender bias is endemic within the scientific,
technological, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields, and this bias can
disadvantage women pursing these careers (Moss Racusin, Dovidio, Brescoll,
Graham Handelsman, 2012). The importance of further study of mitigating

actions of the cannibals speak louder than their words. The cannibals restraint
towards eating humans in the novel shows them in a positive light. If you view
Africa as a whole, both blacks and whites should be viewed the same. Mr. Kurtz,
being an example, can also be viewed as a cannibal as it is strongly believed by the
Company that he has become a savage, like the Africans. My point being that the
blacks confining from eating humans, does not show Conrad s as a racist but quite
the contrary. Mr. Kurtz s involvement of the African customs and beliefs

The task of effective teaching involves a myriad of ineffable and abstract qualities;
pedagogy demands persistence, patience, and problem solving skills beyond
compare, just to name a few. A teacher s career consists primarily of amassing these
talents whenever possible and learning to put them to best use in an educational
context. It is merely a matter of opinion to identify some of these skills as more
important than others, but in my humble opinion, cultivating and maintaining a
commitment to diversity should be a top priority for today s educators. History runs

public schooling can fit this bill, but it us up to teachers as self aware members of

Comparison is a vehicle of the complex and at times contentious discussion of
equity versus equality. We ask ourselves whether students deserve to start or finish
in the same place. Though we live in an unfair world, teachers generally believe in
building fairness where possible. Take mastery learning as an example of this
dichotomy in the classroom; with mastery learning employed, a class will not move
to the next topic until
