Essay about Alexis deTocqueville
Alexis deTocqueville
Alexis de Tocqueville was born in Paris on July 29th, 1805. Growing up in Metz, France, the
youngest child of HervГ© Tocqueville and Mlle. De Rosanbo, he showed great intellectual
promise from his earliest days. By the age of 16, his academic career was a brilliant one, his
schoolwork earning him a special prize and two first prizes. He was an avid reader, reading
books hardly accessible to a boy of his young age. It was during these years that he developed his
critical thinking and reasoning skills that would serve him so well later in life. In 1831, Alexis and
his friend and colleague Gustave de Beaumont embarked for New York. Sent to study the American
penal system, Tocqueville was much more interested in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mayer writes in Tocqueville s biography that he read at this time with a tireless appetite the works
of Plato, Plutarch, Machiavelli, Rousseau, and Montesquieu, and it would seem that in these same
years he made a close study of Aristotle, Polybius, and more particularly, the works of Edmund
Burke. Regardless of his influences, Tocqueville s most serious concern is that democracymay give
rise to certain forms of despotism. Without local institutions...the despotic tendencies which have
been driven into the interior of the social body will sooner or later break out on the surface. In the
introductory chapter to Democracy in America, Tocqueville expresses his famous opinion that the
movement of the history of Christendom over the course of the previous 700 years has invariably
been in the direction of democratic equality. This is the foundation of Tocqueville s inevitability
theory. He implies that democracy in inevitable in the same way that the spread of civilization and
enlightenment are inevitable. Best known for his popular critique, Democracy in America, first
published in

Punishment For Capital Punishment
Mahatma Gandhi echoed the phrase, An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. Capital
punishment has been a process of punishment since time before Christ. Capital punishment or the
death penalty, is the process of punishing, an individual, by execution for committing a crime. One
moral theory to justify this process of punishment is cited in Mark Timmons s book Disputed Moral
Issues: A Reader. The consequentialist theory states, A specific punishment for a certain crime
is
morally justified if and only if it would likely produce at least as much overall intrinsic value as
would any other alternative punishment. (Timmons, 535) However, this theory has multiple issues
in justifying the death penalty, which would be consider a negative consequence. These issues are
execution of innocent people, financial cost of executions, and the belief that executions are a
deterrence. Execution of innocent prisoners, does not produce an overall net intrinsic value
compared to alternative punishments. According to statistical data collected, as of October 2015,
a total of 156 people have been exonerated while on death row since 1973. A total of 1,414 people
have been executed since that time, meaning one out of ten people on death row are innocent. (
Exoneration of Innocent Men and Women ) This data brings forth the scenario of innocent victims
being killed, by flaws in the criminal justice system. Murderof an innocent individual is not morally
justifiable, because it would fail

Moral Relativism and Problems Associated With this Philosophy
Moral relativists believe that no one has the right to judge another individuals choice, decisions, or
lifestyle because however they choose to live is right for them. In addition everyone has the right
to their own moral beliefs and to impose those beliefs on another individual is wrong. At first
glance moral relativismmay appear ideal in allowing for individual freedom. After all why
shouldn t each individual be entitled to their own idea of moral values and why should others
force their beliefs on anyone else. American philosopher and essayist, Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803
1882), tells us, what is right is only what the individual thinks is right. There is no higher court of
appeals, no higher, universal, or absolute moral... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After all their actions, they believe are right and you cannot tell them they were wrong. In turn,
we can imagine for a minute that your personal morals and values contain, eye for eye from the
Bible book of Exodus 21:24. Therefore you can morally seek this mugger out and rightfully injure
him and steal his belongings. While carrying out your right to inflict the same damage on your
attacker, their young child is watching and feels that what you are doing is wrong. The child in
turn applies their moral values to the situation and approaches you with a gun because they feel it is
morally correct to use whatever means necessary to protect their home and family. This chain
reaction of individuals applying their moral values to situations that arise is a continual and
expanding predicament. How do you stop a chain reaction when everyone involved is right in their
own mind? According to moral relativity every individual is the source of their own moral
authority....and who has the right to tell any other individual that he is wrong.......according to that
other individual s highest authority (his self), his behavior is right and morally just.
Beyond injuries inflicted to another person, moral relativism is even more absurd in less obvious
dilemmas. The story found on page 118 of American Vision and Values describes a moral relativist
parent who is raising her child without judgment. In

An Analysis of the Relationship between Myself and the...
When this writing assignment was given to me, I sat and pondered about the three poems by
T.S. Elliot, Preludes Journey of the Magi and The Hollow Men and I wondered about which
poem I connected easiest with. I observed the poem, Preludes when I read the lines, And
newspapers from vacant lots...at the corner of the street...a lonely cab horse steams and stamps
(Elliot, Preludes, page 1156 lines 8 11) in which I realized they were in a bustling city. I thought
to myself, since living in a small town all my life, that in the end I would not be able to easily
connect with this piece of poetry. Then in flipping a couple of pages and finding the poem, The
Hollow Menand after reading this poem and have Mr. McGee exegeses this piece of poetry to our
class, I found to be a very empty and depressing pessimistic poem . Which most of my life, I have
had the privilege to look on the positive side of things and live a very joy filled life; which left me
with the last poem, Journey of the Magi. After reading this poem, out of the three, this was the
poem I had the strongest connection to and could relate to the best. T.S. Elliot s poem entitled,
Journey of the Magi was the best poem I could relate to due to the fact that it was a story I ve
known since my childhood, it has religious meaning and I can closely relate to the aspect of
traveling and going on long journeys. The first aspect of the poem, Journey of the Magi that first
made a connection with me, was that this

Introduction of Indirect Taxing on Energy Drinks in France
This article discusses how France introduced an indirect tax on energy drinks at €1 per liter. The
tax was imposed to tackle alcohol consumption among France s young population and energy drinks
consumption due to its high levels of caffeine and sugar.
A form of government intervention, an indirect tax, a tax placed on consumption that is considered
indirect since households only pay then when they buy a good, affects the energy drinks market
outcomes.
Pertaining to the diagram above, previous to government intervention, the energy drinks market
was allocated purely by the forces of demand and supply1 with market equilibrium at PE
(original price) and QE (original quantity). After a tax of €1 per liter was imposed, the
equilibrium quantity of energy drinks produced and consumed decreased to Qtax, as the supply
curve shifted upwards to Stax . Furthermore, the price paid by consumers increased to Pc from
PE and price received by the energy drinks companies decreased to Pp from PE. In addition,
consumer expenditure on energy drinks decreased as well. Due to indirect tax, this changed from
(d+e+f+g+h) to (b+d+f+g) since consumers are purchasing less of the good as the price increased.
The company s revenue also decreased significantly from (d+e+f+g+h) to (f+g), as the quantity of
output decreased. However, the government received tax revenue of (b+d), increasing its budget.
Indirect tax on energy drinks ultimately results in underallocation of resources. Too little of

Early Moblization
Early Mobilization in ICU Care Coordination Sary Valles Farmingdale State Collage October 9,
2014 Early Mobilization in ICU Care Coordination The situation of Length of Stay (LOS) is a
complex issue of the healthcare environment. Each patient requires the effort of many different
resources both people and equipment before they are clinically fit to go home or more to the next
stage of their healthcare journey. Failure to coordinate and synchronize resources across the entire
patient journey results in a major loss of optimal care for the patient as well as wasted expense.
For the patient the consequences of this delay can be dire. One solution to this growing epidemic is
being initiated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many of the nurses are intimidated at the idea of ambulating vent depended patients. The fear of
harming the patients is a justifiable concern that many of the staff ICU nurses have. Reeducation
and supplying safe adequate staff will encourage a change in the culture in the ICU. Part Five of
the algorithm was the goal of early mobilization. This part identified the specific progression of
patients goals and developing an individual mobility care of plan. Encouraging family members to
mobilize the patient when appropriate will aid in the progression of the patients goal. The six and
finally part of the algorithm details the implementation of early mobilization. Based on the
implementation of the algorithm, mobility must be scaled and be progressive. Mobility is the
responsibility of all team members including patients and family. ICUs are complex systems which
may be inadequate to support needed changes. Teamwork and collaboration in the ICU often is non
existent between disciplines. To effect change, needed cooperation of multiple disciplines,
including physicians, nurses, respiratory therapist, and physical therapist are required. Sense of
urgency needs to be established for patients in need of early mobilization. Successful transformation
requires a guiding coalition of multiple disciplines who share a commitment to change. Limited
staffing and safety concerns continue to be a barrier of early mobilization in the ICU. Creating a
vision which includes

A Brief Note On Diabetes Mellitus And Mellitus
Diabetes mellitus is usually a lifelong metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia or high
sugar levels in the blood; can be caused by lack of insulin, insulin resistance, or both. Insulin is a
hormone produced by the pancreas to regulate blood sugar. It controls the metabolism of
carbohydrates and fats that the body used for energy. Without insulin, glucose (sugar) in the blood
builds up causing hyperglycemia. There are 3 classic symptoms of diabetes; the 3 Ps: polyuria
which defines as frequent and excessive urination, polydipsia which defines as excessive thirst, and
polyphagia which defines as excessive eating.
There are two main types of diabetes mellitus: type 1 diabetes mellitus also known as insulin

It is more often develops in winter than summer time and more common in places with cold
weathers. Typical onset is before the age of 30. Many major organs in the body can also be
affected by type 1 diabetes including the heart, blood vessels, nerves, eyes and kidneys. Related
problems include slow wound healing, vaginal infections (vulvar itching), neuropathy,
gastroparesis (delayed stomach emptying), visual and hearing problems, heart disease, blood
vessel disease (foot ulcers), kidney problems (may result in dialysis). Risk factors may
predispose an individual to the occurrence of this type of diabetes such as genetics, exposure to
toxins and certain viruses such as the Epstein Barr virus, Coxsackie virus, mumps virus and
cytomegalovirus which destroys the beta cells of the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. Type 1
diabetes signs and symptoms can come rapidly and may include the classic 3 Ps; polyuria,
polydipsia, and polyphagia, bedwetting in children who previously didn t wet the bed during the
night, weight loss, muscle wasting, irritability and other mood changes, fatigue and weakness,
blurred vision, vaginal yeast infection, and ketonuria or ketones (acid) in urine; high ketone levels
can lead to diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). Treatment for type 1 diabetes is a lifelong commitment to
taking insulin, exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy

The Short Story Of Richard Van Camp
A tragedy in its own right must evoke emotion and a response from the audience through effective
use of several elements evident in Shakespeare s and Aristotle s style of tragic writing. The plot
progression of a tragedy should be rather specific under the idea which leads, ultimately, to the
downfall of the protagonist. Despite the sorrowful story behind Richard Van Camp s short story
Mermaids, the exclusion of several core elements from both styles of writing prevent this piece
from being classified a tragedy. Mermaids lacked the development of a tragic flaw in the main
character, Torchy, and furthermore did not lead the character to their tragic demise, Van Camp
also excluded the idea of isolating him over time and rather brought him closer to those around
him to get over his inner conflict, which is unlike a tragedy. A central character in a tragic piece
of writing should develop in a way where they are lead [ushered] to their demise due to a critical
flaw, which is caused by the inability to solve an inner conflict. Torchy was found to be at a
rather low point in his life evident by his use of drugs and his gambling issues. Despite these
vices, he does not allow it to destroy him. His relationship with the young girl, Stephanie, who
was neglected by her parents, allowed him to reflect on his past particularly after his brother s
death. [M]y daddy s gone, she says... I ll be your sister... if you ll be my brother ... I start to cry

Indian Residential Schools On The Aboriginal Community Essay
It is not possible to talk about the lengthy history of colonial settlers and indigenous groups without
addressing the devastating effects of Indian residential schools on the Aboriginal community in
Canada. During the past two decades, the Canadian government acknowledged the implications and
has taken responsibility for the outcomes of these residential schools. Much has been done through
the framework of transitional justice in order to facilitate reconciliation with the indigenous
community in Canada. Despite the government s amends, I will argue that the reconciliation
efforts were inadequate because the purpose of these initiatives was merely to draw a line
between the past and the present, rather than to restore the socioeconomic wellbeing of the
Aboriginal community that existed before the legacy of Indian residential schools. Indian
Residential Schools were a network of boarding schools that were run conjunctionally by the
Canadian government under the administration of the church. Residential schools were founded
in 1867 and lasted up until the late 1990 s. There were about 130 schools with around 150,000
children. The purpose of these schools was to kill the Indian in the child; Indian children were
forcibly taken from their homes and placed in these boarding schools where they were forced to
assimilate to the settler Canadian culture. Children were subject to physical, sexual and emotional
abuse, and as a result, mortality rates were as high as 35 to 60

Reducing the Carbon Footprint
The 7th principle of green chemistry states A raw material or feedstock should be renewable rather
than depleting whenever technically and economically viable. 1 This means making use of easily
available, cheap, and non exhaustive resources like biomass consisting of plant or animal feedstock
and/or carbon dioxideto make platform chemicals and commercially viable products instead of
our conventional non renewable resources like fossil fuels, natural gas, and oil. The rising fuel
and energy demands of an ever growing world population in the last two decades have resulted in
rapid depletion of these non renewable resources. These circumstances have forced us to look at
other possible sources to sustain the chemical, fuel and energy requirements of a growing and
developing planet. Renewable feedstocks can be the answer to this. However the major challenge
/test in this is to develop platform chemicals and materials with pathways employing low energy
consumption processes and which would be less toxic. Another important factor is to have a
process in which the amount of carbon that is incorporated into the system is higher than the
amount that goes out to the environment. This difference is referred to as the carbon footprint and
if positive can help reduce global warming.1 So if these processes used in making new platform
chemicals and materials along with the final chemicals themselves, can contribute to a positive
carbon foot print along with less toxic and harmful effects

Italy, the country that was chosen to explore all these different aspects, has a large scale of history

We as Americans have seen shows such as Jersey shores, and Growing up Gotti , and believe
that all Italians act and look that way. In reality Italians from the southern part of Italy tend to tan
faster because they are closer to the equator which makes a lot of sense. The media has made it
seem like all Italians are tan and it s normal for them to look the way that they do. This stereotype
has some truth to it but not all Italians are this way.
These stereotypes that have been associated with Italian culture aren t true but not completely
false. This goes to show us that we can t always believe what we are being told about different
cultures. The media is a huge factor in why these stereotypes have been associated with Italy.
One of the biggest roadblocks to successful intercultural communication with Italians is how
Italians communicate with nonverbal actions in casual conversation. A few of the nonverbal
actions include personal space, touching, eye contact, and certain gestures. First of all, Italians
do not believe in personal space because it is viewed as a sign of affection or friendship to be in
close proximity of one another, according to a cultural portfolio created by DePauw University.
This differs from American culture greatly. Americans tend to require more personal space. For
example, if two strangers are having a casual conversation, and one of them gets too close to the
other, space is being invaded and they will feel as if the first person is in their face and will try to

Gatlinburg Case Study
As the years pressed on Gatlinburg saw more and more tourist. They decided to take this and
create a town that fully runs off of tourist. The second biggest thing to hit Gatlinburg after the
creation of the National Park has to be when the general assembly passed legislation in 2009 that
made distilleries legal in 41 Tennessee counties. On July 3rd, 2010 the city sold their first legal jar
of moonshine. Since, Gatlinburg has opened Ole Smoky Moonshine which allows tourist to come
into the distillery and are offered free tastings. This allows the tourist to taste the heritage of the
Smoky Mountains. After which the people are able to buy jars of said moonshine and take the taste
of the Smokys home. This passing allowed for a massive increase from an economic and tax
revenue standpoint. The following months brought in more tourist than before. Granted many
people thought by offering free tasting of moonshine and making it legal to brew, the locals thought
it would put out the wrong image of Gatlinburg. Many locals believed that Gatlinburg should have
stayed a more family oriented attraction, but with the passing of the legislation the locals realized
that it didn t affect the family image that had been established. With the locals of Gatlinburg
onboard and the moonshine business beginning to take off, the town was uplifted with tourism and

Johnson began dancing at the age of three after begging her mom to put her into dance after she

That made me feel great! I can t even find a word for it! She s basically like my role model. I want

Introduction
The objective of this lab is to find the relationship between tensile stress and strain for various
materials. The Stress Strain Apparatus stretches (and in some cases breaks) a test coupon while it
measures the amount of stretch and force experienced by the test coupon. Software is used to
generate a plot of stress versus strain, which allows Young s Modulus, the elastic region, the plastic
region, the yield point, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The displacement registered by the Rotary Motion Sensor will be the combination of the coupon
stretching and the rest of the apparatus bending. Regardless of how much the coupon stretches, the
deformation of the rest of the apparatus is constant for a given force. After repetitive measurement
with the calibration bar it was found that the movement of force sensor is negligible compared to
the stretching of the sample, hence the calibration step is not required.
Procedure
1. When installing coupons, remove the nuts and the clamp and place it at secure place, it is not
needed for composite material testing. The coupon should be slid completely over the coupon
holding screws on each end.

The Music Of Hip Hop
Hip hop is a very broad subculture due to the fact that it is comprised of so many other
subcultures. The four main factions of Hip hop are MCing(master of ceremonies) better
identified today as rapping, DJing (disk jockey), breakdancing and Graffiti. Break dancing is
known as the physical manifestation of the hip hop style (Rose 47). The Hip hop subculture has a
long lineage and the four main factions where all foraged together in the same place at the same
time. Even though the culture at the time was viewed as deviant hip hop slowly became a very
popular subculture in America. Due to the fact that Hip hop is so popular makes me believe that
the breaking subculture has been absorbed into mainstream culture.
Break dancing was first performed by underprivileged black and Puerto Rican youth in the mid
1970 s at the height of disco s popularity. The purpose of a disco DJ at the time was to hide or
erase the breaks in between the songs. It was within these breaks that break dancers would come
out and [execute] moves that imitated the rupture in the rhythmic continuity as it was highlighted
in the musical break . Hence the name breakdancers.(Rose 47) The moves that are done in
breakdancing share resemblances to a number of Afro diaspora dances and well as African
American dances, Afro Brazilian martial arts dance Capoeira and even common dances don in the
1920 s. While the dance moves are deeply rooted in the cultures that created them, they are not just

John Lewis Walking With The Wind
We need it to steer us all where we deserve to go in the next. John Lewis writes a short, factual
story about one of his childhood experiences titled: Walking With The Wind. He relates this
event to civil circumstances and social inequalities. His message is that people need to battle the
storms or arising disaster as a collective instead of individually. Not only will rising above the
issue be much easier as a group, the next problem that appears will be more manageable. This
essay critiques his use of imagery, vocabulary, sentence structure and voice in regards to how his
writingfits the message.
Imagery is a very prominent part of Walking With The Wind . Examples of some well done
imagery within the piece are: a place of thick, pine forests and white cotton fields and about fifteen
of us children were outside my Aunt Seneva s house, playing in her dirt yard . While these
quotations do not fit well with the theme, the images ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Walking With The Wind , the author often used in long, eloquent sentences as a tool to paint
images across the readers mind. An example of this is: The sky began clouding over, the wind
started picking up, lightning flashed in the distance, and suddenly I wasn t thinking about
playing, I was terrified. Lewis also used long sentences to better convey the metaphore the story
inspired. More than half a century has passed since that day and it has struck me more than once
over these many years that our society is not unlike the children in that house, rocked again,
again by the winds of one storm or another, the walls around us seeming at times like they might
fly apart is an example of a metaphorical sentence. Short, choppy sentences are usually used to
both make a point, and create a rapid, tension filled scene. Examples of this are: And we did. And
we still do, all of us. You and I and We were scared. Even Aunt Seneva was scared. And then it got

Rhetorical Analysis On Want It All
Wanting It All Is Easy Recently Nike dropped a commercial titled Want It All and it is an
extremely interesting advertisement. Nike just became the new official sponsor of the National
Basketball Association (NBA) and it needed an advertisement to excite the fans of the league
and get them excited for the new season. Nike took the spot from one of its top rivals in the
athletic wear world, Adidas, so they needed to put out a strong front and show people that they
were just as good if not better than their competitor. Nike is an extremely well known distributor
for athletic wear and sporting goods. In the commercial, Nike uses a fictional person who goes by
the name of Donte Grand and is an extremely skilled basketballplayer. He grows up in the inner
city and does not come from a lot, but he excels in basketball and shows that no matter where you
come from, if you want it all, you are going to have to go and get it. Throughout the commercial,
he transitions from his front yard to the local outdoor court, to his high school, college, and
eventually pro teams where he is playing in the NBA Finals which is the championship with big
time Nike sponsored players such as Kevin Durant and Lebron James. The advertisement uses ethos
and pathos to help convey its message. The first rhetorical device that is obviously noticeable is the
appeal to pathos in the advertisement. The first thing you notice in the advertisement is the almost
terrible conditions of the buildings and streets

comfortable, the design will not sell. Also, when designing, there must be knowledge about what

where the business teams conduct research on the market to see what new trends are happening.
According to the case, the 2007 Summer designs were quite sheer. The international retail director,
Catherine Belletty, found that customers in Japan and other Asian markets do not like the sheer

The personal vision that interest Le Masne is to maintain a positive work environment that
increases innovation and creativity to an even higher level than before. Vision matters for the
individual and the organization as is can promote a positive work environment and drive work
efficiencies. As for the strategy in accomplishing their vision, it seems to be having a negative
effect on the workplace. There are negative attitudes in the place of work. For example, when the
business people provide feedback to the designers after observing the designs and styles, the
meetings tend to get heated with everyone expressing their opinions. To ensure that there is
progression being made toward the vision of the organization, goal setting and feedback should be
used. According to Gary Lathem, using goal setting theory can be one of the most practical ways of
increasing employee motivation (2009, p. 159). In providing both positive SMART goals and
positive feedback to designers, this will help increase the organization s performance, followers
performance, and followers attitudes (Kirkpatrick, 2009. p. 368).
Lastly, another question that should be evaluated is What should the executive chairman, Raphael
Le Masne, do next? Le Masne should first develop his leadership skills. One leadership style that Le

The Public Schooling System During The United States
When looking at the history of America, it is fascinating to see how the public schooling system
even got started. The first schools in America were not public schools, as many would presume.
Instead, the first schools in the United States were religious and not secular (Elifson 1). Nearly all
public schools, up to the 1960 s incorporated religionand prayer in their classrooms; however, in
the last 50 years, prayer and religion in public schools has been debated over countless times. Even
in Hudsonville, Michigan, which holds the record in the Guinness Book of World Records for
having the most churches on a single street, there is much debate over prayer and the teaching of
Christianity, or any religion, in the public schools. When I... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Samuel Ayers and Shelly Reid are two educators at schools in Texas and they agree with this
statement. They argue constantly in their article that religions are essential in teaching social
studies. Reid and Ayers contend that, [the] very faces of Europe and Africa were changed as
Muslims and Christians battled over lands during the Middle Ages (2). They also state that in other
countries, entire social systems are based on religious beliefs (2). Consequently, this points to the
fact that religion, in its entirety, is immensely important in teaching students the history of nations
and many social systems that nations uphold. Reid and Ayers have proven that after receiving the
knowledge of religion in some countries and understanding why their respective religions were
important to them, [students] achieved a deeper understanding of many current events, [especially]
those involving the Middle East (Ayers and Reid 2). It is perfectly clear that in many
circumstances, knowing the religious background of a nation will help enlighten the students to
better understand why some nations hold a particular stance on a given matter (Ayers and Reid 1 3).
Another author, Rob Boston, talks about this subject in less detail. He argues that legitimate
instruction about religion as an academic subject in public schools [is not] a problem. As long

How we now see Hair Additions
With the benefits of technology, we now have a wide selection of wigs and hair addition to let
our creative minds wonder about all the way we can style and maintain these additions. There are
many lengths, styles, colours and textures of hair additions you could buy/rent. Wigs are also very
cheap compared to their ancestors and new age technology has allowed us to create wigs that are
weaved to create an ultra light and hyper ventilated wigs. The finish of the hair additions all
depends on how you maintain the hair e.g. heat damage whilst styling or styling /finishing
products. The finish is also dependant on the material; we typically see human hair additions or
synthetic additions being used as animal hair/plant fibres is no longer seen as necessary to use and
there is no real demand for these anyway. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

their quality of style retention meaning they never have to be styled and unlike human hair the

Eisenhower s Speech Analysis
In his speech to the nation after the death of renowned Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, Dwight David
Eisenhower elucidates a chance for a cease of hostilities between the United States and the Soviet
Union. Eisenhower supports his elucidation with appeals to pathos through the preemptive
utilization of parallelism, pronoun shifts, allusions, repetition, and juxtaposition in an effort to
communicate the chance of opportunity to settle the differences with the Soviet Union before
another conflict on a global scale occurs. Eisenhower utilizes parallelism in a plethora of areas
throughout his speech to directly talk about his feelings. To do this, he inputs parallelism in the first

Short And Long Term Effects Of The Greek Revolution
The Ottoman Turks first ruled over Greece when it captured Constantinople and eventually the rest
of Greece. This put Greece and a variety of other countries in their power. The Greeks wanted
liberation from the Turks from the start and began having unsuccessful rebellions that eventually
lead to the rebellion in the Peloponnese, where the war is said to have really begun. They were
inspired by the successes of the French Revolution and felt responsible for the preservation and
development of their culture. This bonded them together and made them feel nationalism. The
Greek War of Independence was a successful liberal movement that achieved their goals and was
revolutionary. Under the Ottoman rule, the Greeks were not happy. The Muslim Turks... Show more

Starting with the short term effects, the first matter to be solved was the land question. After the
Greeks had won, there were plots of land abandoned by the Turks. The Greek government
eventually gave each peasant family and veteran 20 acres of the confiscated land too small for
prosperity, but enough to show that they believed that each Greek could be self sustainable. Next,
with one part of the population of Greeks independent, they needed to figure out what their
relationship was with all of the Greek nation. In response, they made a policy in which all Greeks
were unified. Onto the long term effects, the revolt is a crucial in Ottoman history because it
started a wave of rebellions against them eventually leading to their demise and the creation of new
Mediterranean states. The Greek revolution was in no way the first rebellion against the Ottoman
Empire, but it was the first successful one with foreign involvement. The Ottoman empire was
made up of a variety of people of different races and beliefs. After the Greek success, the
remaining people and Greeks in the Ottoman empire were inspired to make their own stand for
independence and many would succeed. Not only was the revolution important to Ottoman history,
but it was obviously important to the Greek s history as well. When King Otto was on the throne,
it was almost as if nothing had changed. He imposed the same high taxes just as the Ottoman
Empire (maybe even higher) and ruled as an absolute monarch. Based off the revolution, the chance
that the Greeks would keep still was close to none. They revolted in 1843 and forced him to sign a
new Constitution and instituted a constitutional monarchy. Eventually, he would prove to be a ruler
unfit of Greece and was deposed of. This also inspired more Greeks to be a part of politics. Besides
King Otto, one other problem layed in the failure to create a

Human Development Index to Measure Living Standards Within...
INTRODUCTION
Through the ages, economists worldwide have developed different measurements, statistics and
standards in order to have an anchor number on how to rate whether they be the development, their
perceived inequality among other variables within a country. Because of this, and on the endeavour
to unify the measurement of the current situation of a country, the United Nations via the United
Nations Development Program in 1990 developed and first published their Annual Human
Development Report featuring for the very first time in history the Human Development Index
(Stanton, 2007).

Naturally the UN has addressed these claims and has improved the index within the years, but there
is always space for improvement.
The HDI had withstood several critics regarding the poor quality of the data used in the
calculations, regarding the selection of indicators and even on the calculations and the formulation
itself; nevertheless, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) rebutted some of those
claims and used others to improve the HDI calculations. (Stanton, 2007). The HDI, with or without
flaws, has up to some extent shaped the way we assess and compare countries. Thanks to the HDI,
the development is implied when talking about wellbeing instead of only looking at raw numerical
information. Hopefully in the future, the Index shall be improved even more, to finally have a
definitive Index on development worldwide.
In the year 2000, the UN established eight international development goals regarding: poverty,
education, gender equality, child mortality, maternal health, HIVand other diseases, environmental
sustainability and global partnership. (Nations, n.d.). For this paper, the HIV pandemic shall be
analysed. The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is the virus that serves as root for the
acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or AIDS which is a disease that compromises the human
immune system supressing it and leaving the body open for other diseases and

Light can be seen by many people, but what really is light? What does it symbolise, or mean to
certain people. In Time and Again the light has many different meanings. The light is coming from
multiple sources meaning that the light has different effects and it is helping to tell the story by
allowing us to use these different lights in order to see a theme. Lightwill allow a person to have
different emotions depending on how they perceive it. The first time that light comes up in the

Biological Altruism Is A Phenomenon Defined By French...
Biological altruism is a phenomenon defined by French philosopher Auguste Comte as behavior by
an individual that increases the fitness of another individual while decreasing the fitness of the
actor. The coinage of this term posed a difficult question to the field of evolutionary science, as it
contradicted with Charles Darwin s definition of the mechanism of natural selection. In The Origin
of Species, Darwin explains the mechanism of natural selection by stating that individuals having
any advantage, however slight, over others, would have the best chance of surviving and
procreating their kind and On the other hand, we may feel sure that any variation in the least
degree injurious would be rigidly destroyed (83). The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is due to the selfishness that lies within human motives. By examining altruistic actions in
society, politics, and economics, we can determine that many acts of seemingly altruistic
behavior are driven by ulterior, selfish motives. During his 2012 presidential campaign, Senator
Mitt Romney released his 2011 tax forms under intense pressure and scrutiny from the
Democratic Party and when he did, many major news stations announced in bold headlines that
Romney donated 29.4% of his annual income to charities while Obama only donated 21.8%.
This helped his campaign as republican ideology states that if tax rates are lower, people will
donate more money to charities of their own choice. Republicans believe that this method is
more efficient than taxes, as the government doesn t dictate how much of whose money goes
where, the people are the ones to decide how to donate their money to whichever charity they
choose. However, democrats urged the populace to scrutinize the tax forms, as certain sections
of the forms seemed dubious. Obama paid a rate of 26% federal income taxes that year while
Romney only paid a rate of 14%. As experts delved deeper into the forms, they came to realize
some facts that discredited Romney. Part of Romney s charitable donations were set up as a

The Matilda Effect
As writer, Virginia Woolf, once said, for most of history, anonymous was a woman. Elizabeth
Gould Davis pointed out in one of her books, that women take as great a risk of anonymity when
they merge their names with men in literary collaboration as when they merge in matrimony.
According to psychologist Steve Biko, the first weapon of the oppressor is the mind of the
oppressed. Women s history evaporates because our culture has a stake in erasing women from
history and denying that their participation or leadership ever existed.
The controversy surrounding women s involvement in science is great, and there have been
countless instances in history of women s discoveries and breakthroughs being credited to a man.
So many times, in fact, that there is a term specifically for this occurrence. Known as the Matilda
effect , named after women s rights activist Matilda Joslyn Gage, it refers to the process of the
suppression of women s contribution to science in regards to incorrect accreditation to a male
counterpart for a woman s research. It has seen a woman s scientific findings appropriated and
Nobel Prizes awarded to male colleagues and supervisors. Not only is this clearly unfair on every

Conklin And Henry Fleming Analysis
im Conklin and Henry Fleming have a lot in common, but they also are very different. They are
different in the way they act before the first battle. Crane describes Henry when he says, He
contemplated the lurking menaces of the future, and failed in an effort to see himself standing
stoutly in the midst of them (Crane 16). Henry is confused about what he will do when the
battle starts, while Jim is assured of what he will do. He states that, If a whole lot of boys started
to run, why, I s pose I d start and run... But if everybody was a standing and a fighting, why, I d
stand and fight... I ll bet on it. ... He had feared that all of the untried men possessed a great and

Emotional Intelligence And Psychological Intelligence
Have you ever thought about how many emotions you have in one single day? Now think about
how many emotions you have had just at work alone. Emotions are extremely important and can
rule our lives daily. We make decisions off of them, choose activities based on them and the way
we react in situations can depend on them. When digging deeper you will find a concept called
emotional intelligencewhich puts you in tune with not only your emotions but the emotions of
others as well. This paper will fully explain emotional intelligence along with examples of the
concept, examine the theories of emotional intelligence compared to traditional intelligence quotient
, suggest reasons why leaders need emotional intelligence in today s workforce, speculate on the
consequences when leaders do not possess emotional intelligence, explore elements of emotional
intelligence that leaders must be aware of to increase leadershipeffectiveness and finally
recommend a strategy that the organization could undertake in order to improve social skills of
leaders within the organization and thereby positively influence their emotional intelligence.
Emotional intelligence is the ability to monitor the feelings and emotions of the self and of others
and to use this information to guide tone s behaviors. (Wicks, Nakisher, Grimm, 2014). A person
with low emotional intelligence will get uneasy and think irrational when a high priority project is
due and their employer begins to lay heavy

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual And Nonjudgmental Groups In The...
Target Population
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community does not just represent one
specific group or individual, LGBT represents every race, religion, ethnicity, and social class. I
would not say that the attributes that cause the such a high increase in suicide attempts and
successful suicides as a unique quality. More like, they are a vulnerabilities that make individuals
feel as if they do not belong. People in the LGBT community feel out of place, not accepted, the
community has an anti gay stigma, harassed, discriminated against and little to no family or
community support (Health People 2020, 2017). The rise in campus resources such as information
on depression, suicide and STD s can related to these vulnerabilities because the LGBT
community is silently calling for help. They are experiencing some type of trouble, some group on
campus, other individuals or just the community is not welcoming to them. The campus might not
have very strict laws against bullying, which is not effectively protecting its students. The
students in who identify as LGBT might not feel like the school has effective programs for them,
or that the campus health is o a save nonjudgmental place for them. I do believe that the LGBT
community can be divided into sections. The different L G B T can each be spilt up into different
sections. Since each group faces their own problem, for example, Lesbians only like women, so
they will utilize different resources then say

Argumentative Essay On Community Colleges
Community colleges are meant to be largely funded by tuition localities and states. However, as
reported by the Washington Post, this is not the case in Florida (Danielle 2016). In 2008, the
counties offered no support to the community colleges because of the financial crisis. This has
changed over the past few years, though very little funding is still given to the community colleges
by the counties. Since community colleges are meant to offer opportunities to people who cannot
continue with higher education, the needs of these students may be higher than the funding that
the county offers for tuition. As a result, the community colleges are divided into bronze, silver
and gold schools. The largest share is allocated to the gold schools whereas the silver and bronze
receive smaller shares or none at all for the bronze schools. Most students in Florida are
encouraged to pass through community colleges before proceeding to universities to polish their
grades (Danielle 2016). Florida s universities on the other hand get funded by both federal and state
government. There are other ways in which these community colleges and universities in Florida
and other higher learning institutions in the US get funded. These include: personal or family loans
and savings, provision of scholarships by the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Use Of Humor In Catcher In The Rye
When humor is used to convey a message or theme, the emotional response exhibited by the
receivers of the message is immensely positive. Within the Catcher in the Rye, humor is used to
connect to the reader with its more pessimistic and negative concepts, such as depression and
suicidal thoughts. The use of comedyas the tone makes the book cheerfully appealing and relatable,
demonstrating how it contributes to the overall meaning and effect. Humorwithin the book allows
for the negative concepts to be present, but at the same time makes the book cheerfully appealing.
With comedy as the main tone of the book, it becomes more cheerfully appealing to the reader. As
the many gloomy concepts within the book continue to occur throughout the story,

The Cause And Effect Of Impulse Control Disorders

The Cause and Effect of Impulse Control Disorders Most people love watching other humans
and like trying to figure out why they do what they do. It s called people watching and we have
all been guilty of it. The human race is fascinating and it is very interesting how we were created
and what makes us tick. Have you ever wondered why some people have an uncontrollable urge
toward destructible behaviors? Do you ever wonder if the behavior can be controlled? Some
people like to act a certain way for attention, but there are others who act a certain way because
they suffer from impulse control disorders. Miller Keane Encyclopedia and Dictionary of Medicine,

These severe outbursts may be displayed as a tantrum, fit, or argument and can be frequent and
out of control. If this aggressive behavior is not dealt with it can lead to serious acts of assault or
property damage. There is a difference between someone who can control these outbursts and
someone who can t. The National Institute of Mental Health on its website reports from a study
conducted in 2001 2003 that depending on how broadly it is defined, IED affects as many as 7.3%
of adults 11.5 16 million Americans in their lifetime ( Intermittent Explosive Disorder Affects up to
16 Million, 2012). To be diagnosed with the IED a patient must have had three outbursts of
impulsive aggressive behavior at any time during their life time. An outburst would happen
suddenly, for no reason and include an aggressive behavior which may either harm another
person or another person s property. In most cases, people with IED usually feel relief or
pleasure after having an episode. An individual who suffers from IED feels compelled to act on
their impulses not caring about the consequences of their actions. When a person is able to decide
whether or not to act on an impulse, he makes a choice. With patients who suffer from IED, there
is no choice. Some health professionals believe IED is a symptom of another mental disorder rather
than a separate one. According to an article entitled

The Values Of Sense And Sensibility By Jane Austen
Sense and Sensibility by: Jane Austen
Intoduction:
Sense and Sensibility was first published in 1811, by Jane Austen, Sense and Sensibility represents
the neoclassical, dualistic moral world where values and exclusion values will ultimately be
successful in a painful, romantic feeling. Not only that, he was making serious cynicisms of
society s eighteenth centuries in which the aristocrats were praised and indirectly influencing
young people s minds, not the love of love but to betray it just for Wealth. In the novel, Lucy and

Austen is very concerned about the social environment of his characters, and his settings clearly
reflect this concern. Barton is the countryside, and our main characters live in the shadow of

depend on rich connections to stay in social loop Of moderate to high societies. The particular
Austen moment in history is an interesting one. His novels are fascinated by the unique and
unusual interaction between people of different social levels a new development in England at that
time. His books are firmly planted in the bourgeoisie, a class that is up and up while he writes.

Information literacy requires a learner to identify, understand, and evaluate the strengths and

The SUmmer of a Jupiter Symphony Essay
The Summer of a Jupiter Symphony The year is 1788 as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart began to
work on his last three symphonies during a time of strife for musicians as the Austro Turkish War
continues to war on in Austria. Tired from moving his family from central Vienna to the suburbs of
Alsergrund all while in debt to his ears as he continued to borrow money from friends including a
fellow mason, Michael Puchberg, Mozart finished his final symphony on August 10, 1788. This
piece, nicknamed the Jupiter Symphony, coined by impresario Johann Peter Saloman, was Mozart s
longest symphony with a total of four movements, a typical symphonic form during the Classical
era. The Jupiter Symphony totals to about forty five minutes of music ending... Show more content

Mozart was known for having an ear that would make any musician envious. From a young age
he was able to listen to any piece of music and his mind would interpret all of that data with ease.
While in Rome, he listened to a performance of Gregorio Allegri s Miserere only twice at the
Sistine Chapel and was able to write it down for memory when he got home (Abert 135). After
Mozart and his father returned to Italy from a ten year tour, Mozart was employed by Prince
Archbishop Hieronymus Collero to be a court musician in the year 1773. With a pay check of
only 150 florins a year though, Mozart began to look for other job ventures and began to try to
write operas that he hoped would help kick start his career as a professional musician. It was not
until 1782 when Mozart began to receive the credit that he deserved. Performing on multiple
local keyboard competitions, he was soon established as one of the best keyboard players in
Vienna. Finally in 1783, as he finished writing the opera Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail, he
began to be seen as a successful independent composer and started to receive a reputation as such
(Abert 642). As Mozart got older, he matured even more as a composer writing a total of over six
hundred pieces including symphonies, operas, concertos, and other styles of pieces during his life

Buck V Bell Case Summary
Buck v.Bell. 274 U.S. 200. Supreme Court (1927). Rpt. in Bioethics and The Law. Ed. Janet L.
Dolgin Lois L. Shepherd. New York: Wolters Kluwer Law and Business, 2013. 254.
Written by Justice Holmes, the infamous Buck v Bell opinion, gives a summary and an analysis
of how the court reached the decision to uphold Virginia s sterilization statute. The case involved
Carrie Buck, an 18 year old women in a Virginia institution for feeble minded individuals, she was
to be sterilized after being found to be feeble minded. In addition to the summary of the case,
Holmes raises his concerns with having more feeble minded individuals and criminals parading the
streets which justifies coerced sterilization.
Justice Holmes opinion creates a picture of negative eugenics which makes this case a pinnacle in
coerced sterilization discourse. Written in 1927, this opinion is the only primary source on this list,
with the exception of the opinion by Justice Douglas concerning Skinner v Oklahoma. It is also
important to note that this opinion is the only source advocating for coerced sterilization.

The main components that make up copper are protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons are
positively charged, electrons are negatively charged, and neutrons don t have a charge. The
nucleus is at the center of the atom, and it contains protons and neutrons. Electrons are stored in

positively charged. The two stable copper isotopes that should be describe are 63Cu and 65Cu. The

There are 29 electrons in the copper atom. There are 29 electrons in copper because copper has to
stay neutral, which means that there are also 29 protons. So, since electrons have a negative
charge, and protons have a positive charge, 29 negative plus 29 positive equals no charge/neutral.
The electron configuration in symbols can be translated by: the first number is the shell number,
the letter is the subshell, and the to the power of, or superscript, is the number of electrons that
are present in the subshell. In the s subshell, there is 1 orbital, in the p subshell there are 3
orbitals, and in d subshells, there are 5 orbitals ( Electron Shell. Wikipedia). Each orbital can hold a
maximum of two electrons. So, the s subshell can hold 2 electrons, the p subshell can hold 6
electrons, and the d subshell can hold 10 electrons. Since there are 29 electrons in copper, all of the
orbitals in the subshells will be filled, except there will be one extra s subshell if you use 1s2 2s2
2p6 3s2 3p6 3d10 4s1. The fourth shell is the highest shell that contains electrons in copper. So, if

Reverend Hale Reflection
Reverend Hale In the play, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Reverend Hale faces his own
crucible. John Hale is minister who specializes in witchcraft. Hale comes to Salem in 1692 to
examine Betty Parris. John did not fall into the ideology of fake witchcraft like others in Salem.
He does start the hysteria that is happening in Salem when he encourages the girls to rat out on
the other girls and people in town. With later regret, Reverend Hale follows his religious and
puritanical beliefs. John Hale follows idea of puritanism by trying to keep the court fair,
keeping god in his life, and maintaining his intellectual abilities throughout the play. Hale was
trying to keep the court fair at all times. By doing so, he was keeping the belief of the Bible in
mind. Reverend Hale says, I have seen too many frightful proofs in court the Devil is alive in
Salem, and we dare not quail to follow wherever the accusing finger points! This is saying that
no one should be put on trial without evidence of witchcraft. In the play, whoever gets the finger
pointed at them is put on trial. In today s court people can t be tried without evidence. By Hales
doing of this, he is trying to maintain the balance of equality in the courts. Even though he was
the person who influenced the girls to rat each other out, he looks back and regrets it and
corrects it when he quits the court after deeming it unfair. So in conclusion, by the end of the
play Reverend Hale keeps his peace with God. Reverend Hale as the minister he is always keeps
God in his life. Hale says, It is mistaken law that leads you to sacrifice. Life, woman, life is God s
most precious gift; no principle, however glorious, may justify the taking of it. I beg you,
woman, prevail upon your husband to confess. Let him give his lie. Quail not before God s
judgement in this, for it may well be God damns a liar less than he that throws his life away for
pride. Will you plead with him? I cannot think he will listen to another. This meaning that Hale is
admitting to being fooled by the girls of Salem. He tells Elizabeth that he thought he was coming

The ones who are still alive and learning to strive with their injuries are the real victims.
In Jacqueline s extreme case, she was with five friends driving home one night when a drunk
driver swerved into their lane and hit them head on. Two of her friends died in the accident
while she was left in the burning car. Jacqueline suffered from third degree burns on 60% of her
body, but the inspiring part is yet to come. Jacqueline is not only alive and striving, but she is
also learning to put her life back together and continue with life as normally as possible. But
exactly how possible is that when you are left with noticeable deficiencies? Jacqueline was only
20 years old when the accident happened. She had recently decided to take a break from college
to move to America from Venezuela to study English. With her injuries, she was not able to
continue her college education or help her dad run his air conditioning factory. But even with
this, Jacqueline still hopes to get married and have kids someday. She is aware that this may not

  • 2. Essay about Alexis deTocqueville Alexis deTocqueville Alexis de Tocqueville was born in Paris on July 29th, 1805. Growing up in Metz, France, the youngest child of HervГ© Tocqueville and Mlle. De Rosanbo, he showed great intellectual promise from his earliest days. By the age of 16, his academic career was a brilliant one, his schoolwork earning him a special prize and two first prizes. He was an avid reader, reading books hardly accessible to a boy of his young age. It was during these years that he developed his critical thinking and reasoning skills that would serve him so well later in life. In 1831, Alexis and his friend and colleague Gustave de Beaumont embarked for New York. Sent to study the American penal system, Tocqueville was much more interested in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mayer writes in Tocqueville s biography that he read at this time with a tireless appetite the works of Plato, Plutarch, Machiavelli, Rousseau, and Montesquieu, and it would seem that in these same years he made a close study of Aristotle, Polybius, and more particularly, the works of Edmund Burke. Regardless of his influences, Tocqueville s most serious concern is that democracymay give rise to certain forms of despotism. Without local institutions...the despotic tendencies which have been driven into the interior of the social body will sooner or later break out on the surface. In the introductory chapter to Democracy in America, Tocqueville expresses his famous opinion that the movement of the history of Christendom over the course of the previous 700 years has invariably been in the direction of democratic equality. This is the foundation of Tocqueville s inevitability theory. He implies that democracy in inevitable in the same way that the spread of civilization and enlightenment are inevitable. Best known for his popular critique, Democracy in America, first published in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Punishment For Capital Punishment Mahatma Gandhi echoed the phrase, An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. Capital punishment has been a process of punishment since time before Christ. Capital punishment or the death penalty, is the process of punishing, an individual, by execution for committing a crime. One moral theory to justify this process of punishment is cited in Mark Timmons s book Disputed Moral Issues: A Reader. The consequentialist theory states, A specific punishment for a certain crime is morally justified if and only if it would likely produce at least as much overall intrinsic value as would any other alternative punishment. (Timmons, 535) However, this theory has multiple issues in justifying the death penalty, which would be consider a negative consequence. These issues are execution of innocent people, financial cost of executions, and the belief that executions are a deterrence. Execution of innocent prisoners, does not produce an overall net intrinsic value compared to alternative punishments. According to statistical data collected, as of October 2015, a total of 156 people have been exonerated while on death row since 1973. A total of 1,414 people have been executed since that time, meaning one out of ten people on death row are innocent. ( Exoneration of Innocent Men and Women ) This data brings forth the scenario of innocent victims being killed, by flaws in the criminal justice system. Murderof an innocent individual is not morally justifiable, because it would fail ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Moral Relativism and Problems Associated With this Philosophy Moral relativists believe that no one has the right to judge another individuals choice, decisions, or lifestyle because however they choose to live is right for them. In addition everyone has the right to their own moral beliefs and to impose those beliefs on another individual is wrong. At first glance moral relativismmay appear ideal in allowing for individual freedom. After all why shouldn t each individual be entitled to their own idea of moral values and why should others force their beliefs on anyone else. American philosopher and essayist, Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 1882), tells us, what is right is only what the individual thinks is right. There is no higher court of appeals, no higher, universal, or absolute moral... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After all their actions, they believe are right and you cannot tell them they were wrong. In turn, we can imagine for a minute that your personal morals and values contain, eye for eye from the Bible book of Exodus 21:24. Therefore you can morally seek this mugger out and rightfully injure him and steal his belongings. While carrying out your right to inflict the same damage on your attacker, their young child is watching and feels that what you are doing is wrong. The child in turn applies their moral values to the situation and approaches you with a gun because they feel it is morally correct to use whatever means necessary to protect their home and family. This chain reaction of individuals applying their moral values to situations that arise is a continual and expanding predicament. How do you stop a chain reaction when everyone involved is right in their own mind? According to moral relativity every individual is the source of their own moral authority....and who has the right to tell any other individual that he is wrong.......according to that other individual s highest authority (his self), his behavior is right and morally just. Beyond injuries inflicted to another person, moral relativism is even more absurd in less obvious dilemmas. The story found on page 118 of American Vision and Values describes a moral relativist parent who is raising her child without judgment. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. An Analysis of the Relationship between Myself and the... When this writing assignment was given to me, I sat and pondered about the three poems by T.S. Elliot, Preludes Journey of the Magi and The Hollow Men and I wondered about which poem I connected easiest with. I observed the poem, Preludes when I read the lines, And newspapers from vacant lots...at the corner of the street...a lonely cab horse steams and stamps (Elliot, Preludes, page 1156 lines 8 11) in which I realized they were in a bustling city. I thought to myself, since living in a small town all my life, that in the end I would not be able to easily connect with this piece of poetry. Then in flipping a couple of pages and finding the poem, The Hollow Menand after reading this poem and have Mr. McGee exegeses this piece of poetry to our class, I found to be a very empty and depressing pessimistic poem . Which most of my life, I have had the privilege to look on the positive side of things and live a very joy filled life; which left me with the last poem, Journey of the Magi. After reading this poem, out of the three, this was the poem I had the strongest connection to and could relate to the best. T.S. Elliot s poem entitled, Journey of the Magi was the best poem I could relate to due to the fact that it was a story I ve known since my childhood, it has religious meaning and I can closely relate to the aspect of traveling and going on long journeys. The first aspect of the poem, Journey of the Magi that first made a connection with me, was that this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Introduction of Indirect Taxing on Energy Drinks in France This article discusses how France introduced an indirect tax on energy drinks at €1 per liter. The tax was imposed to tackle alcohol consumption among France s young population and energy drinks consumption due to its high levels of caffeine and sugar. A form of government intervention, an indirect tax, a tax placed on consumption that is considered indirect since households only pay then when they buy a good, affects the energy drinks market outcomes. Pertaining to the diagram above, previous to government intervention, the energy drinks market was allocated purely by the forces of demand and supply1 with market equilibrium at PE (original price) and QE (original quantity). After a tax of €1 per liter was imposed, the equilibrium quantity of energy drinks produced and consumed decreased to Qtax, as the supply curve shifted upwards to Stax . Furthermore, the price paid by consumers increased to Pc from PE and price received by the energy drinks companies decreased to Pp from PE. In addition, consumer expenditure on energy drinks decreased as well. Due to indirect tax, this changed from (d+e+f+g+h) to (b+d+f+g) since consumers are purchasing less of the good as the price increased. The company s revenue also decreased significantly from (d+e+f+g+h) to (f+g), as the quantity of output decreased. However, the government received tax revenue of (b+d), increasing its budget. Indirect tax on energy drinks ultimately results in underallocation of resources. Too little of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Early Moblization Early Mobilization in ICU Care Coordination Sary Valles Farmingdale State Collage October 9, 2014 Early Mobilization in ICU Care Coordination The situation of Length of Stay (LOS) is a complex issue of the healthcare environment. Each patient requires the effort of many different resources both people and equipment before they are clinically fit to go home or more to the next stage of their healthcare journey. Failure to coordinate and synchronize resources across the entire patient journey results in a major loss of optimal care for the patient as well as wasted expense. For the patient the consequences of this delay can be dire. One solution to this growing epidemic is being initiated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many of the nurses are intimidated at the idea of ambulating vent depended patients. The fear of harming the patients is a justifiable concern that many of the staff ICU nurses have. Reeducation and supplying safe adequate staff will encourage a change in the culture in the ICU. Part Five of the algorithm was the goal of early mobilization. This part identified the specific progression of patients goals and developing an individual mobility care of plan. Encouraging family members to mobilize the patient when appropriate will aid in the progression of the patients goal. The six and finally part of the algorithm details the implementation of early mobilization. Based on the implementation of the algorithm, mobility must be scaled and be progressive. Mobility is the responsibility of all team members including patients and family. ICUs are complex systems which may be inadequate to support needed changes. Teamwork and collaboration in the ICU often is non existent between disciplines. To effect change, needed cooperation of multiple disciplines, including physicians, nurses, respiratory therapist, and physical therapist are required. Sense of urgency needs to be established for patients in need of early mobilization. Successful transformation requires a guiding coalition of multiple disciplines who share a commitment to change. Limited staffing and safety concerns continue to be a barrier of early mobilization in the ICU. Creating a vision which includes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. A Brief Note On Diabetes Mellitus And Mellitus Diabetes mellitus is usually a lifelong metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia or high sugar levels in the blood; can be caused by lack of insulin, insulin resistance, or both. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas to regulate blood sugar. It controls the metabolism of carbohydrates and fats that the body used for energy. Without insulin, glucose (sugar) in the blood builds up causing hyperglycemia. There are 3 classic symptoms of diabetes; the 3 Ps: polyuria which defines as frequent and excessive urination, polydipsia which defines as excessive thirst, and polyphagia which defines as excessive eating. • 10. The Short Story Of Richard Van Camp A tragedy in its own right must evoke emotion and a response from the audience through effective use of several elements evident in Shakespeare s and Aristotle s style of tragic writing. The plot progression of a tragedy should be rather specific under the idea which leads, ultimately, to the downfall of the protagonist. Despite the sorrowful story behind Richard Van Camp s short story Mermaids, the exclusion of several core elements from both styles of writing prevent this piece from being classified a tragedy. Mermaids lacked the development of a tragic flaw in the main character, Torchy, and furthermore did not lead the character to their tragic demise, Van Camp also excluded the idea of isolating him over time and rather brought him closer to those around him to get over his inner conflict, which is unlike a tragedy. A central character in a tragic piece of writing should develop in a way where they are lead [ushered] to their demise due to a critical flaw, which is caused by the inability to solve an inner conflict. Torchy was found to be at a rather low point in his life evident by his use of drugs and his gambling issues. Despite these vices, he does not allow it to destroy him. His relationship with the young girl, Stephanie, who was neglected by her parents, allowed him to reflect on his past particularly after his brother s death. [M]y daddy s gone, she says... • 12. Indian Residential Schools On The Aboriginal Community Essay It is not possible to talk about the lengthy history of colonial settlers and indigenous groups without addressing the devastating effects of Indian residential schools on the Aboriginal community in Canada. During the past two decades, the Canadian government acknowledged the implications and has taken responsibility for the outcomes of these residential schools. Much has been done through the framework of transitional justice in order to facilitate reconciliation with the indigenous community in Canada. Despite the government s amends, I will argue that the reconciliation efforts were inadequate because the purpose of these initiatives was merely to draw a line between the past and the present, rather than to restore the socioeconomic wellbeing of the Aboriginal community that existed before the legacy of Indian residential schools. Indian Residential Schools were a network of boarding schools that were run conjunctionally by the Canadian government under the administration of the church. Residential schools were founded in 1867 and lasted up until the late 1990 s. There were about 130 schools with around 150,000 children. The purpose of these schools was to kill the Indian in the child; Indian children were forcibly taken from their homes and placed in these boarding schools where they were forced to assimilate to the settler Canadian culture. • 14. Reducing the Carbon Footprint The 7th principle of green chemistry states A raw material or feedstock should be renewable rather than depleting whenever technically and economically viable. 1 This means making use of easily available, cheap, and non exhaustive resources like biomass consisting of plant or animal feedstock and/or carbon dioxideto make platform chemicals and commercially viable products instead of our conventional non renewable resources like fossil fuels, natural gas, and oil. The rising fuel and energy demands of an ever growing world population in the last two decades have resulted in rapid depletion of these non renewable resources. These circumstances have forced us to look at other possible sources to sustain the chemical, fuel and energy requirements of a growing and developing planet. Renewable feedstocks can be the answer to this. However the major challenge /test in this is to develop platform chemicals and materials with pathways employing low energy consumption processes and which would be less toxic. Another important factor is to have a process in which the amount of carbon that is incorporated into the system is higher than the amount that goes out to the environment. This difference is referred to as the carbon footprint and if positive can help reduce global warming.1 So if these processes used in making new platform chemicals and materials along with the final chemicals themselves, can contribute to a positive carbon foot print along with less toxic and harmful effects ... In reality Italians from the southern part of Italy tend to tan faster because they are closer to the equator which makes a lot of sense. The media has made it seem like all Italians are tan and it s normal for them to look the way that they do. This stereotype has some truth to it but not all Italians are this way. These stereotypes that have been associated with Italian culture aren t true but not completely false. This goes to show us that we can t always believe what we are being told about different cultures. The media is a huge factor in why these stereotypes have been associated with Italy. One of the biggest roadblocks to successful intercultural communication with Italians is how Italians communicate with nonverbal actions in casual conversation. A few of the nonverbal actions include personal space, touching, eye contact, and certain gestures. First of all, Italians do not believe in personal space because it is viewed as a sign of affection or friendship to be in close proximity of one another, according to a cultural portfolio created by DePauw University. This differs from American culture greatly. Americans tend to require more personal space. For example, if two strangers are having a casual conversation, and one of them gets too close to the other, space is being invaded and they will feel as if the first person is in their face and will try to back ... The second biggest thing to hit Gatlinburg after the creation of the National Park has to be when the general assembly passed legislation in 2009 that made distilleries legal in 41 Tennessee counties. On July 3rd, 2010 the city sold their first legal jar of moonshine. Since, Gatlinburg has opened Ole Smoky Moonshine which allows tourist to come into the distillery and are offered free tastings. This allows the tourist to taste the heritage of the Smoky Mountains. After which the people are able to buy jars of said moonshine and take the taste of the Smokys home. This passing allowed for a massive increase from an economic and tax revenue standpoint. The following months brought in more tourist than before. Granted many people thought by offering free tasting of moonshine and making it legal to brew, the locals thought it would put out the wrong image of Gatlinburg. Next, with one part of the population of Greeks independent, they needed to figure out what their relationship was with all of the Greek nation. In response, they made a policy in which all Greeks were unified. Onto the long term effects, the revolt is a crucial in Ottoman history because it started a wave of rebellions against them eventually leading to their demise and the creation of new Mediterranean states. Biological altruism is a phenomenon defined by French philosopher Auguste Comte as behavior by an individual that increases the fitness of another individual while decreasing the fitness of the actor. In The Origin of Species, Darwin explains the mechanism of natural selection by stating that individuals having any advantage, however slight, over others, would have the best chance of surviving and procreating their kind and On the other hand, we may feel sure that any variation in the least degree injurious would be rigidly destroyed (83).
