Porter five forces is the best choice to understand a market before entering it. Porter five forces peek at
the strength of 5 vital forces which affects the business competition. These five forces are Supplier
power, Buyer power, Competitive rivalry, the threat of substitution and the threat of new entrant
(Analyst 2015).
Supplier Power Firstly, Supplier power in porter five forces refers to how easy it is for supplier to
increase price of inputs. Fewer number of supplier choices means that supplier power is higher
(Analyst 2015). Lincoln Electric must choose their supplier wisely because choosing the right supplier
means that they would be able to maintain their cost and main competitive advantages in India.
Buyer Power Secondly, Buyer power in porter five forces refers to how easy it is for the customer to
bring prices down. The higher the number of buyer means that the buyer power is higher (Analyst

The Marine Corps For Eight And A Half Years
I have served in the Marine Corps for Eight and a half years. I happened to choose a job where most
people don t volunteer to Enlist into. I have spent my entire career as an Infantryman. This job that I
choose to become part of has brought me to many places. Most people join the Marine Corps to see
the world, but I wanted to fight. I was afforded the opportunity to partake in Operation Iraqi Freedom,
and Operation Enduring Freedom covering both theaters our nation is at war with. Throughout those
years many things have begun to change. We are no longer actively engaged in armed conflict, and
with that comes many changes with rules, regulations, and standards. Our country is in an interesting
time with political correctness over shadowing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The military across the board has been making a transition in to peace time life. This is fairly difficult
for people like myself, because we are used to the Marine Corps being a certain way. Nearly Ninety
percent of the Infantry in 2007 was composed of individuals that knew, or were asking to go to war.
With the tightening down on certain aspects of rather relaxed rules and regulations. From the time that
I had joined, many of our war hardened hero s found themselves in a predicament with having to leave
the military by force. Rules such as the tattoo policy which at one time was ok to have tattoos,
overnight Combat Veteran Marines were told to find work elsewhere. Knowing the reasons why I had
originally joined, and seeing what was becoming of future warfighters, I knew I didn t see the true
focus of the mission at hand. My second reason for deciding to leave the military is the hardships that
my family has had to endure. It was until recently that my wife and I had our first child. For the past
eight years it has just been her, and I. My first duty station was in Hawaii, this made it a nightmare for
my then girlfriend to come and visit. Once I had returned from my first deployment we decided to get
married. Roughly four months later I was headed to Afghanistan on my second deployment. My wife
had decided to stay in Hawaii while I was deployed. I didn t quite take in to account how difficult that
must have been for her, not really knowing anyone.

Donnie Moyer Character Analysis
When it comes to small towns people who haven t lived in one tend to think that they are boring or
bland. However a chat with some of the people who have always lived in a town of less than four
hundred people for their entire lives really paints a new picture. Donnie Moyer has lived outside of
Terril, Iowa his entire life on a farm working for his father until his passing in which he took control
of the property. When we discussed How has the town change since you ve lived here? he responded
with It hasn t change at all it s still the same place I grew up in. Some see this as being bland but in
today s age with all the technological change it is refreshing to see some are happy with their roots.

responded with You knew your neighbor, you could walk around town with no fear, and you watched

after her response it was clear that the sense of security was a large part that contributed to her
decision to remain in this town after marrying Donnie but it begged the next question. Why did you
choose to raise your family in a small town? to which she replied immediately to with We already had
family here and the community had become family as well. Now that may seem to be an easy answer
to give but the sincerity in her voice spoke more than words ever could. We went on to discuss why
she herself believed that most outsiders believe small towns are bland and boring to which she
responded Because to them there is no big nightlife scene. They can t go out every night or weekend

Comparing God And Jonah In The Book Of Jonah
In the book of Jonah we see the vast amount of tension between both God and Jonah. He is one of the
prophets who also believes in tolerance of non Jews opposite to Ezra s and Nehemiah s stress of an
unadulterated blood race of Jews under a restrictive Jewish God. Jonah is one of a vast line of
important people in the bible who argues with God. As you see in past books of the bible everyone has
stood their own against the Lord. Jonah though decides to try and run from God. The Lord called to
Jonah and said Arise, go to Ninevah, that great city, and cry against it, but Jonah flees to Joppa, setting
sail on a ship duty bound for Tarshish, assuming he can evade the Lord. Jonah views the Lord as sort
of a indigenous God of restrained power that his hand would not reach as ... Show more content on

This is when Jonah is anointed the role of a prophet that is a persuader, as a publicizer of the Lord s
mercy, and the gift of repentance. Ezra and Nehemiah believe when they returned to the promise land
that the lord had returned to them must be at its utmost holiest. That means the the people of the old
Israel that were left behind and married foreign wives had to leave. This is not right in the meaning
that we have today and if you re a follower of the Lord. Most people conclude you are entitled to
follow or not follow at your leisure. God is a God that cares for Jews and gentiles akin. This is where
you could battle equally Jonah s, Ezra s and Nehemiah s because both bring valid reasoning to their
accustoms. Jonah s who believes all should be given the chance and Ezra Nehemiah s view that this
land should have foreign idols worshipped in their land. I conclude that this is presented to us in the
book of the bible because we must make the choice in whether what s correct and what s not correct

Summary On Lamentation Of Christ
The title of the painting is The Lamentation of Christ or Mourning of Christ . Lamentation is religious
painting which is 7 7 by 7 9 and can be seen at Arena chapel in Padua. The medium used in this
painting is fresco, created by Giotto in 1305. 2. This is the very powerful painting where we see Jesus
s dead body surrounded by his families, friends and people who loves him. Jesus body is removed
from the cross and is carefully and gently held by his loved ones. There are numerous people around
Christ, some are sitting, and some are standing. There are five figures who held Jesus body. There are
three females which are wearing long gowns and have halo around their head. Then we have other two
figures which have their back towards us, so we can t identify if they are males or female figure. Jesus
body is not touching the ground. The female figure who is cradles around Jesus is more likely his
mother, Mary, who is mourning his son s dead. Mother Mary have her arms around his son and have
very sad face. There is a female figure in red hair who is mourning and touching the Jesus s feet. Two
of the figures holding Jesus s hands. There is young man who symbolism St. John. He has short

Accounting Information and Predicting Financial Performance
Accounting Information and Predicting Financial Performance:
Accounting information can be useful in order to help predict future performance in the short and long
term. It is important to note however that accounting information including accounting ratios show a
company s performance at a period in time. It is historical data. Trends can be identified by comparing
data in sequential periods and future forecasts can be determined using historical data. There is no
evidence or proof however, that these patterns will predict the future at a level of complete certainty.
In my opinion, it would be hard to argue that decreasing profits over an extended period of time, or
deteriorating liquid assets and increasing long term debt will have a ... Show more content on

The coverage ratios use cash flow from operations in most cases. Coverage ratios are important to
long term investors and creditors because of the nature of the ratios that show the availability of cash
to pay for items that include long term debts and dividends as well calculating percentages of cash
flow from operations to shareholders equity, and average number of common shares outstanding
(Ibarra, 2009). In addition, it has been determined that the cash flow to total debt (a coverage ratio)
can be used as one of the best indicators of financial distress (Jooste, 2007). In all coverage ratios, a
high ratio and increasing trends is the best case scenario.
Regression analysis seems to be extremely useful in determining financial distress and the bankruptcy
of firms. In fact, in a particular study conducted by Bredart in 2014, it was presented that regression
analysis was able to show an 84% prediction accuracy rate in determining bankruptcy of 870 firms
between the years of 2000 and 2012 (Bredart, 2014). The independent variables used in Bredart study
included profitability (net income/total assets), liquidity (current assets/current liabilities), and
solvency (equity/total assets) while the dependent variable included financial distress.

Essay Pres, Truman Atomic Bomb Decision
President Truman s Decision to drop the Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki During World War
II the war in Europe ended after the unconditional German surrender at General Eisenhower s
Headquarters in Reims, France, May 7, 1945. After the unconditional German surrender in Europe the
war shifted to Asia and the Pacific. As the war continued against Japan the Allied forces captured
islands such as Iwo Jima and Okinaawa close to Japan brought the Japanese homeland within range of
naval and air attacks. (Dannen) On August 6, 1945, the city of Hiroshima was the target of the first
atomic bomb used against civil population in history. On August 9, 1945, the United States dropped a
second atomic bomb over the city of Nagasaki. In total, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After they recount the intensity of these battles, the bombs follow logically as a pardon from further
carnage by our amphibious invasions of the Japanese home islands. This was one political technique
used to manipulate the decision of President Truman. President Truman must have kept in mind the
personal political implications of his decision to drop the bomb. With polls showing that Americans
overwhelmingly supported the unconditional surrender of Japan and with his knowing the strong anti
Japanese sentiments of the American people, I must have felt that I had little political risk in dropping
an atomic bomb on Japan. (Harry Truman) President Truman must have also considered his difficulty
in explaining to American voters why the government spent two billion dollars to develop a superior
weapon if he personally decided not to deploy it, especially if the war had dragged on with additional
American casualties. Here is an entry from Truman s diary, I have to decide Japanese strategy shall we
invade Japan proper or shall we bomb and blockade? That is my hardest decision to date. But I ll
make it when I have all the facts. (Ferrell) President Truman told his diary that he had ordered the
bomb dropped on a purely military target, so that military objectives and soldiers the target and
women and children are to be spared. The bombing order

Importance Of Art And Literature In The Perception Of Society
The importance of Art and Literature in the Perception of Society
Art and literature contain the power to transport one to extraordinary settings and time periods.
Depending on the novel, the reader can travel the lands of Narnia and uncover ways to prevent
bullying without even leaving the chair. Likewise, with art, one can join the Picasso era and identify
the struggles he encountered. Clearly, creative compositions aid in portraying the different aspects of
society and Miriam Toews effectively unravels this mystery in her novel The Flying Troutmans. The
author demonstrates how art and literature helps one make sense of the world around them by
considering different perspectives, by analyzing character developments, and by building intellect.
This eventually leads to self understanding.
Art and literature become a source of guidance when one learns from the integrated insights of human
experiences. Many writers incorporate unique characters, allowing the audience to view situations
through unfamiliar perspectives and discover significant information. For example, Min, Logan and
Thebes mother, attempts suicide several times, experiences heartbreak, and eventually, refuses to meet
with her family. For Min, novels are [her] girl guide to the universe...[Her] library of loss (Toews 167)
since she can identify with the central characters. Specifically, because she suffers from a mental
illness, she focuses on the protagonists who endure a comparable disorder. Thereon, she

Traditional Methods Of Managing Personal Income
There are three traditional methods of managing personal income. 1. Budgeting, 2. Keeping a
spending history, and 3. Doing nothing (also known as living from paycheck to paycheck). Budgeting
involves setting what percent of future income is to be spent on which categories of expenses, and
then recording all purchases in order to track how well spending is staying within the predefined
limits. The process sounds very simple, however, it is difficult, in my opinion, to stick with a budget
for very long. The energy and dedication needed to keep track of where the money goes is
tremendous. I ve tried budgeting on several occasions and failed miserably because I couldn t stomach
keeping track of every penny I spent. Traditional budgets also tend to fail because the setting of rigid
spending limits does not lend itself well to being flexible. When unforeseen expenses pop up, a budget
can be rendered useless very quickly. It s my experience that budgets can feel like monetary straight
jackets that are soon abandoned. Spending Histories A Vicious Cycle Keeping a spending history also
involves the recording of every penny spent. The intent is to use the spending history as a basis for
identifying spending habits that can be improved and then making needed changes to future spending
patterns. The main weakness of keeping a spending history is that it is focused on past activity and,
therefore, is of little help when a person is trying to make immediate decisions about

Efficient Market Hypothesis And The Effect Of High...
Efficient Market Hypothesis and the Effect of High Frequency Trading The efficient market
hypothesis (EMH) has consistently remained in the forefront of finance theory for decades. As
technology has advanced, the ability to assess the efficient market hypothesis has increased
exponentially and so have the opportunities to exploit it. Tactics such as high frequency trading and
insider trading threaten the dependability of the efficient market hypothesis. EMH is a rudimentary
theory that implies the value of an asset is directly correlated or about equal to the intrinsic value of
the asset. (Brigham Houston, 2012) The intrinsic value of a stock is the actual value of a company or
an asset based on an underlying perception of its true value including all aspects of the business, in
terms of both tangible and intangible factors (investopedia.com). Investors use this logic to determine
whether to buy or sell a stock depending on its perceived value with respect to the intrinsic value.
Whether the investor employs an active or passive investment strategy, the EMH is a rational decision
making process to ensure a confident investment. The efficient market hypothesis is constantly being
analyzed for its validity in the current market. There are a multitude of external factors contributing to
the reluctance of relying on the EMH. Specifically, the rise of high frequency trading has significantly
called into question the legitimacy of the efficient market. High

The Apparel Shopper
Comprhensive Case The Apparel Shopper
1. What overall conclusions do you reach after reading this case?
The information in the case gave the overall conclusion that the apparel industry is a very competitive
field to get into and in order to prosper companies must find their own personal niche within the
industry. A company cannot survive in the apparel industry by providing what is already available in
other stores. It is important to define a target market and appeal to their needs and wants. For instance,
Wal Mart appeals to low income individuals, Target and Old Navy appeal to more fashion sensitive
customers, and so on. Ultimately, stores must relate and direct efforts towards specific apparel
shoppers demographics and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Why or why not?
The retail implications are that most stores tend to follow the trends and not necessarily set them.
Americans are more conservative than Europeans in their apparel so if a new retailer is trying to break
into the market, he/she should consider how they want to market their clothing. If they want to stand
out, maybe they should invest in newer, trendier clothing. If not, then they should keep their target
market in mind. I don t agree with that statement however, I do believe Americans are trendy
themselves. Many people I know rely on celebrities, magazines, talk shows, and television to figure
out the latest styles and how to wear certain styles. I believe Americans acually focus quite a bit on
trends..especially younger generations. Older generations tend not to follow this idea however.
5. How could the information cited in the case be used in a retail information system?
The information in this case could be used by a retailer to help dicover how to cater to their target
market. Their retail information system can keep track of information on the types of customers that
shop at their stores, such as income level, gender, race, age, ethnicity, and clothing preferences. The
retailer then knows if they are targeting the right customers for their product line and price range or if
they need to change their target market.

The Construction Industry Development Board
1.0 Introduction
Construction industry plays an important part as a stimulant in Malaysia s economy. The Construction
Industry Development Board (CIDB) was established as a government agency to facilitate and act as a
catalyst to the development, is generally representing the construction industry to the government and
the public. (Chan, 2009). According to Hiap (2012), the CIDB published a ten year Construction
Industry Master Plan (CIMP) towards the end of year 2007, the aim is to refocus the strategic position
and charting the future direction of the industry.
The construction industry is one of the highest contributing in country s economy. This industry
provides job opportunities to the people in different sector such as agriculture, mining and quarrying,
manufacturing, construction and services. Davis and Tomasin s study stated the fatalities happened
were caused by most of the usage of equipment such as conditions of scaffolds, power access

electrocutions, vehicles rollover, personnel run over by vehicle and excavation cave ins were listed as
the top five categories of fatalities in the construction industry (IPEDR, 2011). Therefore, the

Disadvantages Of Flexible Work
According to Hernreich, 2008 flextime or flexible can made our work force more efficient and more
focused while they are working. It is a step backward to go back to rock solid hours. As long as an
employee is getting the job done, they should be treated like an adult. Research show that many adult
workers like to work schedules that flexible other than work that just follow the schedules and cannot

All Men Are Created Equal Dbq
All men are created equal , though this would be a fact of the Western World society today, it was
certainly not always that way. With the beginning of slavery in the 1600s, to becoming the main cause
of the Civil War and abolishment of it, here is slavery; from the Union s point of view.
The earliest form of slavery in North America can be traced back to Jamestown, Virginia in 1619.
There, they were called the Twenty and Odd and considered servants rather than slaves. Though little
is known about this infamous event, this trade continued of capturing Africans from Africa and
bringing them to the colonies of Britain. The usage of slaves increased and were often used as field

By the end of the war, there were roughly 198,000 African Americans in the Civil War. This was a
controversy for not only some of the Union who refused to fight alongside an African American, but
also for the South who would see them in combat. There were disputes among both sides over the
Union taking slaves from the South and ultimately rescuing them. Though the North claimed it was
legal, considering slaves were property and both sides were allowed to raid and confiscate property
from each other. This was particular accomplishment on the Union s half, for it took the Confederate s
words and used them against them.
The Union won the war and slavery was officially abolished with the thirteenth amendment in 1865.
This great accomplishment brought America one step closer to equality, though there is still work to

The Great Gatsby Theme Essay
In the film The Great Gatsby the themes of love, greed and corruption of the American Dream are all
set in the jazz age of New York City. One of the most prevalent themes of the story is that of love, as
well as its fleetingness. There are no stable relationships in present. Daisy and Tom s marriage has
been damaged by affairs from early in its life. Tom s affair with a hotel chambermaid soon after their
honeymoon. By the time the novel begins, Daisy is well aware of Tom s regular affairs, seeming to
suffer in silence until Gatsby offers her a way out. Myrtle s relationship with Tom is no stronger,

for Daisy is unshaken till the end. Yet this love is unrealistic based not only on a relationship started
on a lie, but also needing a turning back of time to make it complete. However, Gatsby s love for
Daisy is not true love; it is infatuation based on objectification. She becomes the symbol of everything
he wants, rather than the complex human being she really is. The theme of corruption is consistent
throughout the film, every person involved in it somehow. Overall, the society in which the film takes

decadent, living life in quest of cheap thrills and with no seeming moral purpose to their lives. Any

Hyperuricemia
Hyperuricemia is a common human metabolic disorder in the production or excreation of uric acid , it
leds to increase in serum uric acid levels more than the normal values (Haidari et al., 2012). Uric acid
is the last metabolite of the purine catabolic pathway in humans. Uric acid is formed by oxidation of
hypoxanthine to xanthine and xanthine to uric acid by the enzyme xanthine oxidase (XO).
Hyperuricemia results in the deposition of urate crystals in the joint and kidney causing inflammation,
gouty arthritis and uric acid nephrolithiasis (Tomita et al., 2000; Kong et al., 2002). The increasing
risk of hyperuricemia also has been demonstrated in several studies that elevated serum uric acid
levels predict the development of obesity and hypertension (Johnson et al., 2009; Perez Pozo et al.,
2010), hyperlipidaemia, cancer, and diabetes (Lin et al., 2000).

Themes In The 5th Wave By Rick Yancey
The 5th Wave, a young adult, science fiction novel by Rick Yancey, can be used to teach many themes
to its readers. Some of these themes include, people are defined by the choices they make, family is
worth dying for, and survival depends on being dedicated to others, not yourself. The characters can
teach us a lot by their experiences and Rick Yancey most likely did this on purpose. There are many
examples in the text to support these recurring themes. To start with, we will examine the theme,
people are defined by the choices they make. One of the greatest examples for supporting this theme
in The 5th Wave, is the character, Evan Walker. He is half human and half alien. However, he
abandons the aliens and chooses to be human. In this case, being human just means siding with them,
especially since there are few left. Evan made choices to be human many times. In the first place, he
didn t kill Cassie on the highway. He describes it like he couldn t. Therefore, he showed feelings of
guilt, love, pity, and other human emotions. This was his initial act of starting to side with mankind.
He even saves her when she s dying in the snow bank, taking her in and nursing her back to health.
Later on in the book, he gives up his house to burn it as a distraction. Once they continue on their
journey, he protects her from soldiers that the aliens are training. Which means, he killed his own in
order to keep Cassie safe. Eventually, he even breaks into the alien s main base,

He also made a fantastic start by claiming back all the lands that had been lost since 1455 this meant

them and make them respect him. He set heavy fines for any barons that were planning secret armies
against him, he heavily taxed them to reduce their wealth and with this money he was able to develop
his army, a powerful army lead by the king would also be a threat to the barons. He also used The
Court of Star Chamber a court run by men the king trusted and they were relied on to severally punish
any baron who angered the king. Henry made some very good alliances with France, Spain and
Scotland this helped him to avoid war with these countries. His eldest son Arthur married the princess

The Perks Of Being A Wallflower Coming Of Age Analysis
The Realization of Passivity Where should I go? asked Alice. That depends on where you want to end

Chbosky is a phenomenal coming of age novel that depicts how Charlie, the introverted protagonist,
develops a new understanding of life. Set in the early 1990s, Charlie narrates his freshmen year of
high school experience through an anonymous series of letters to a stranger. He begins the novel
isolated by his peers and feeling lonely until he is befriended by Sam and Patrick, two seniors who
encourage Charlie to experience new things and life live to its fullest. Charlie is considered to be a

The first symbol is revealed when Sam is speaking to Charlie to truly participate about how it s not
enough to have friends or just be there but that, Charlie really needs to engage with his friends. It s
great that you can listen and be a shoulder to someone, but what about when somebody doesn t need a
shoulder? What if they need arms or something like that? You can t just sit there and put everybody s
lives ahead of yours and think that counts as love. You just can t. You have to do things (Chbosky
200). In other words, Sam uses a shoulder to represent Charlie s passivity and wallflower status. The
shoulder symbolizes his inaction, a stationary anatomy to be leaned on. It symbolizes how Charlie
listens and is always there for his friends but the arm symbolizes how Charlie needs to put himself out
there; give his opinions, speak up and challenge others, be a man of action, be the arms . It
demonstrates how he emotionally grew to become a shoulder but also how he needs to continue to
grow. Undoubtedly, Charlie has become someone who participates in life. This is demonstrated in
Charlie s final letter when he describes his ride through the Fort Pitt tunnel with Sam and Patrick.
Instead of overanalyzing his drive through the tunnel as he did the previous times, Charlie allows

Bipolar Disorder And Mental Disorders
Intro Bipolar disorder is an emotional instability checked by great movements in disposition going
from a hyper to a depressive state. Bipolar disorder is additionally called bipolar disease or manic
depression. Bipolar disorder oppresses 3 to 5% of the populace with inconvenient impact on life
possibilities. People with Bipolar Disorder will face life span danger for mood shifts, including fatal
consequences. It is sixth most common cause of disability in the United States (Altman et al., 2006).
As demonstrated by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition the two
most basic sorts of Bipolar Disorder are bipolar I disorder (BDI) and bipolar II disorder. There are a

disorders add to all the more adapting troubles. Higher rates (19.4%) of bipolar disorder are found in
patients with borderline personality disorder than among patients with other personality disorders

higher rates of rapid cycling, symptom severity, suicidality, aggressively and impulsivity (Leahy).
Unfortunately bipolar disorder is generally misdiagnosed as unipolar depression. Depending on the
population, between 7% and 52% of patients diagnosed with unipolar depression actually have bipolar
disorder (Culpepper2015) and could possibly go unrecognized for a long time or more from
manifestation onset to first treatment. One study reported that patients were misdiagnosed an ordinary
of 3.5 times and had seen 4 specialists before being precisely analyzed. In addition, 60% of
misdiagnosed patients felt that doctors had an insufficient comprehension of bipolar disorder
(Culpepper2015). To confirm the determination of bipolar disorder,

Environmental Issues
William Sanford, popularly known as Bill Nye the Science Guy stated, Climate change is happening,
humans are causing it, and I think this is perhaps the most serious environmental issue facing us (Nye,
n.d.). Although this statement proves to be accurate, often times it is not realized that the harm caused
to the environment by humans in turn present a health risk to the community. The state of Washington

Urbanization also causes a respiratory health concern due to an increase in industrial activity. Water
and air pollution closely relate to the result of urbanization. It is noted that the majority of things that
are byproducts of human civilization cause pollution to water and air. The major causes of water
pollution in this area is toxic chemicals entering the waterways on a regular basis.
Ecology currently estimates that Puget Sound receives millions of pounds of toxic chemicals every
year from surface runoff, groundwater discharges, and municipal and wastewater outfall pipes. These
contaminates include oil and grease, PCBs, and phthalates as well as toxic heavy metals such as
copper, lead, and zinc. These toxins concentrate in urban bays and enter the food chain (Department of
Ecology (n.d.)).
This plays a major factor in health risk for individuals of the community. When chemical pollutants
enter waterways, and contaminate fish, the human consumption could be tragic. Health conditions that
may arise from toxic waste in water may include organ failure or possible death. Closely related to the
urbanization of Washington is air pollution. With the industrial growth of the community, harmful
emission plague the environment from sulfur dioxide emission to the common vehicle emissions. Air
pollutants pose a serious respiratory health issue that can cause aggravated cardiovascular and
respiratory illness. Major causes of the

Three Era s, Three Novels
Progress is a distinctive venture of man. The constant need to predict and control, instrumented by
science and technology, has led to astonishing possibilities for which the long term consequences are
unpredictable. There is, however, no ultimate goal of progress; and as limits continue to be broken, the
boundaries of human interference in nature are expanding indefinitely. Everywhere, there is a sense of
the unconquerable forces unwittingly evoked to serve the project of progress, bringing the project
itself into question. This idea has produced three novels that suggest the improvidence of man s quest
for authority from natural law; they are: Frankenstein, by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, H.G. Well s

He attempts to attain this by testing the laws of creation, and giving life out of the products of death.
Mary Shelley s Victor Frankenstein is the figure of man s conflict with nature, a man who wishes to
improve upon the works of science and break the gates that distinguish the physical world. He is
driven by the philosophy that, as stated by his esteemed professor, The labours of men of genius,
however erroneously directed, scarcely ever fail in ultimately turning to the solid advantage of
mankind (34, sic). It is ideas such as this that lay the foundation for the conflicts that inevitably follow
intrusion upon natural law. Men of genius, as Shelley will portray, may have conceptions of the reality
of the physical world, but cannot attain a complete conception of the natural. Yet again and again, men
will try. Frankenstein s narrator is another plagued by the reality of impossible ambition. On his ship,
caught in ice, he believes his will is strong enough to achieve their freedom: Oh! Be men, or be more
than men. Be steady to your purposes and firm as a rock. This ice is not made of such stuff as your
hearts may be; it is mutable and cannot withstand you if you say that it shall not. Return as heroes who
have fought and conquered and who know not what it is to turn their backs on the foe (198). To be

The Issue Of South Africa
Many of the contemporary issues in South Africa can easily be associated with the apartheid laws
which devastated the country. The people of South Africa struggle day by day to reverse the most
cruel, yet well crafted, horrific tactic of social engineering. The concept behind apartheid emerged in
1948 when the nationalist party took over government, and the all white government enforced racial
segregation under a system of legislation . The central issues stem from 50 years of apartheid include
poverty, income inequality, land ownership rates and many other long term affects that still plague the
brunt of the South African population while the small white minority still enjoy much of the wealth,
most of the land and opportunities ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Around 1652, the Dutch East India Company created a settlement on the cape, leading to several other
indigenous peoples settling in the area as well . This tactic nearly parallels with the colonization
beginning throughout the rest of the world. White supremacy gradually took over South Africa as
more and more of them colonized the country, and worked their way into government positions. The
English pushed the natives out and eventually did not care about race, merely about the money that
came from labor . The Land Act of 1913, was believed to be the initial beginning of the apartheid
laws. This act initiated by white supremacists marked the first major downfall of segregation for the
colored and Indian peoples of South Africa. The Afrikans were essentially divided into nine nations
and approximately 93% of the land was reserved for the white people. 2/3 of the population of South
Africa at the time was considered African, or native people, and these people were all banned from
freely buying land , making conditions very harsh, and malnutrition was extremely common .
Urbanization occurred with white people in power simply increasing the segregation between races.
Africans continued to live and work in absolutely terrible conditions. They often resided in the
outskirts of cities in derisory housing, with poor sanitation, were lucky to have a bit of electricity, and
had awful people to manage their workplace. The

Essay On Texas Salary
The Texas legislature is a bicameral body which is composed of a 31 member Senate and a 150
member House of Representative. The state legislature meets at the capital in Austin. State legislators
in Texas salaries consist of making $600 per month or $7,200 per year. Some people feel their salary is
too low, others feel as though they should raise their salaries to a sustainable career level wage. I
believe the state legislature should not have their salaries raised and I feel they are currently receiving
the amount they deserve. When you take into consideration the amount of work they do and
politicians are not well liked by people, are reasons why their current salary pay is justified.

discusses the benefits of increasing a state legislator s salary. Peverill Squire, a professor of political
science at the University of Missouri and an expert on state legislatures created a scale which created
to assess professionalism. The question of salaries has haunted American legislatures since the 1640s,
said Squire. With the use of this scale, the question received a possible answer. Politicians found the

a greater percentage of bills overall and enacting more bill per legislative day (Thomson DeVeaux).
Amelia Thomson DeVeaux makes reasonable points in her article on reasons why state legislators
should receive a higher salary however, she didn t take into consideration that politicians are going to
try and make a career out of being a state legislature. With an increased salary, legislatures aren t
necessarily agreeing or promising to work better or efficiently. If they aren t agreeing to doing more or

Essay about The Roman Military Reforms institued by Gaius...
The hypothesis of this report is that the military reforms instituted by Gaius Marius ultimately paved
the way for the fall of the Roman Republic. The reforms instituted by Marius were designed as a way
to strengthen the Republic by professionalizing the Roman military, but instead resulted in long term
political consequences that contributed to the decline of the Republic and the creation of the Empire.
In this report, the decline of the republic specifically refers to the loss of the Senate s authority over
Rome s generals. From 112 106 BC, a Numidian king called Jurgurtha was engaged in a war with
Rome due to an attempt to seize power from his half brother, Adherbal. The Romans arrived due to the

As many of these new recruits did not fit in these categories, and were unable to provide their own
equipment, Marius arranged for the State to supply them with arms and armour. He then offered the
masses a permanent career as professional soldiers, and the opportunity to gain spoils on the
campaign. With little hope of gaining status in other ways, the masses flocked to join Marius. The
cause of this reform was largely due to recurring recruitment problems faced by the Roman republic,
as most soldiers were expected to return to their farms after long campaigns, but since the campaigns
were becoming increasingly longer due to the distance of the conflicts from rome, the farms were left
deserted and ruined do to prolonged absence of workers. As such, the returning soldiers found
themselves without property making them illegible for military service, thus weakening the army.
(William G. Sinnigen) As such, Marius believed these deficiencies in the Roman army recruitment
system needed urgent attention, and his solution was to offer those with nothing the ability to have
everything. Along with the new recruitment system, Marius also improved and enhanced the military
training by basing it upon those used and developed by gladiators and also abolished the three
different types of soldiers, each armed and positioned by rank and experience, with cohorts of men
universally armed and created the use of the eagle as the standard for

Sociocultural Theory And Social Rules
When looking at sociocultural factors one is faced with a variety of models that attempt to provide a
social explanation of how language is acquired. This includes an examination of such influences as the
social characteristics of the setting and the learner and the social rules for second language use. While
typically associated with these models, Vygotsky s sociocultural theory, which is based in his study of
psychology, does not attempt to use culture to explain how language is acquired. Instead, Vygotsky
identifies the relationship between language and culture as a dynamic, reciprocal and constantly
evolving experience whereby language and culture are constituted in and of each other. Lev
Semenovich Vygotsky developed what is now called The Sociocultural Theory in Russia during the
1920s and 1930s. The core of his idea was that it is the interaction between people and their
surroundings that results in deeper human development. Central to his belief was the important role
community plays in helping humans, especially children, progress and integrate in their social
environment. While often represented as a complete concept, Vygotsky was still investigating and
testing many of his theories when he died suddenly in 1934. His book, Thought and Language,
originally published the year of his death came under widespread criticism and was not translated into
English until 1962. In the 1980s, Vygotsky s works gained wider audiences after being republished in

famous musician. You need to be smart, talented and charasmatic. Dave grohl has achieved all three of
these things. He has completed the goals of many young men, including myself. Dave has been in
many successful bands and written and performed multiple hit songs. Dave Grohl Has many
admirable attributes but considering my time constraints, I will only touch a few of them. The first
amazing that I will discuss is the fact that he can write songs. General audiences do not realize how
difficult it is to write songs. You must first come up with a part. After that extenuating process you

of the parts to his songs. The first album of his newest band(Foo Fighters) was all written, ... Show

How many bands he has been in. Dave Grohl has been in some of my favorite bands including Foo

Effects Of Discrimination On African American Males
The views on discrimination against African American males haven t changed greatly since the
slavery era. For these males the discrimination has become more worse than ever before in modern
society. The African American males are treated unfairly than white males such as from workplace to
dealing with the police. There are more African American males in prisons and they got killed by white
police officers more than any other races because of the racial profiling. According to Daniel B. Lee,
who is a researcher at University of Michigan, African American males faced different types of racial
discrimination in their lives and these impact on their health issue (2). For African Aamerican males
the goal of racial equality remains very difficult to achieve. The acknowledgment towards the African
American males discrimination in society can be further recognized in music. Musicians such as 2
Pac,Kool G Rap,Polo, Bid Daddy Kane, Cool V, and Black Eyed Peas have used their voices to inspire
African American males. Their powerful lyrics encourage the society to take a stand with the African
American males for their rights and the equality against white members of society. The empowering
songs, Changes by 2 Pac, Where is the love? by Black Eyed Peas, Erase Rascism by Kool G Rap et.al

My Studio Project And The Oslo Opera House
he idea of being able to walk on top of the building is something that does not happen a lot.
Connecting the public to the building should be more than just creating a fascinating and interesting
facade. My idea is to describe how a building is able to connect to people, by allowing them to not just
walk inside or around but on top of the building creating a public space. The reason why I chose this
topic is that I wanted to make a connection to my studio project, and how I developed the idea for it.
In addition, I wanted to compare it to the Oslo Opera House and how this assisted me in arriving at my
final design. My studio project and the Oslo Opera House have a different scale however, I think they
share some similar concepts. The idea of togetherness, open space, and easy movement access to the
public, and most significantly its connection to the landscape.
Firstly, the location of the buildings is disparate, the Oslo Opera House does not really have a
connection to the landscape, since it is mostly part of the city surrounded by other buildings and where
traffic is heavy. There might be some connection between the Oslo Opera House and the landscape of
the river, which has influenced the design known as The Wave Wll . My project studio (picture 2) has
a huge connection to the landscape, which allowed me to work around the landscape instead of being
surrounded by buildings. The location of my building is in Beacon, NY, around Main St. behind some

In The Devil s Arithmetic Hannah experiences this first hand, because while at first she can remember
where she was really from her memories started to fade. When she at last could not remember
anything about her true identity she became very frightened and did not understand what was
happening (The Devil s Arithmetic 100). Hannah experiences the same fear her relatives had felt when
they went through the Holocaust. It is then she realizes the importance of remembering your past
because she had never really realized the suffering they had gone through. This gave her more respect
for what her relatives went through than ever before. Through Hannah s confusion and horror Yolen
conveys the theme that it is important to remember the past. In Mapping the Bones Yolen expresses
the same theme, but through Gittel s remembrance of what happened to her during the Holocaust. In
the present, Gittel says that she has, five adopted children, all orphans of other wars. (Mapping the

Analysis Of Riddles In The Dark By Lynn Freed

As first described by Stuart Hall in Encoding/Decoding, and then by Horace Newcomb and Paul

singular text within the broad range of potential interpretations: dominant or preferred, negotiated, and

Asteroid Exploration And Utilization By George Botbyl
The Earth is nearing depletion of its natural resources at a time when human beings are rapidly
expanding the frontiers of space. The resources which may exist on asteroids could have enormous
potential for aiding and enhancing human space exploration as well as life on Earth. With the possibly
limitless opportunities that exist, it is clear that asteroids are the next step for human existence in
space. The resources of the Earth are not infinite, in fact, some are depletable within the next several
decades. Once high grade reserves are used up, low grades ores will have to be used. These effects of
using low grade ores on the environment and society were discussed in the article Asteroid
Exploration and Utilization by George Botbyl as a cycle of negative consequences which build upon
each other. In order to protect Earth, the next 25 years must bring a new era in space development.
Even presidential policy confirms that the United States of America is committed to the establishment
of a permanent human presence in space. The earliest studies of asteroid mining proposed retrieving a
main belt asteroid. Because of the very long travel times to the main asteroid belt, attention has shifted
to the asteroids whose orbits bring them fairly close to the Earth. In these schemes, the asteroids
would be bagged and then processed during the return trip, with the asteroid itself providing the

in Lexington, North Carolina and he is driving 1,572 miles to Miami, Florida. Apparently, Miami is
cold this year. I blame gobbal chilling, the opposite of global warming. Sadly, Tom didn t have enough
clothing, so he goes and buys an additional 5 items. A sweater, $47.50, blue jeans, $79.99, a scarf,
$17.75, a pair of mittens, $5.99, and boots, $89.99, but there is a sales tax (7%) and he has a 33.3%
coupon. So Tom thinks to himself, Huh, I wonder how much this will cost? So he adds up the amount
of money he has to pay and multiplies it by 7, the amount of the sales tax, and then adds it to what the
total is of the clothing, $239.22, and gets $255.97. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He subtracts $85.24 from $255.97 and gets his total of $170.73. Tom buts on his winter stuff and runs
to the Turkey and Stuffin Car Rental Store or TASCRS for short. He rents a car that can go 32 mpg
(miles per gallon). The gas prices are $3.10 per gallon. On his way to Miami he drives 786 miles and
has to pay $76.15 because when you do $3.10 x 786, but the total amount he has to pay is $152.28
because when you do 1,572 x $3.10 it is $152.28. Tom decides to take a desert so before he left his
house he made Chocolate Chip Cookies, but he had to multiply the original amount by 2 ¼. He needs
4 ½ cups of all purpose flour so he multiplies it by 2 and gets 10 ⅛. Then he needs 2 teaspoons of
baking soda and he multiplies it by 2 ¼ and gets 4 ½ and he also gets 4 ½ cups of butter and teaspoons
of vanilla. He then does 1 ½ cups of brown sugar by 2 ¼ and gets 3 ⅜. He also does ½ cup of white
sugar by 2 ¼ and gets 1

Use Of Bandages
Everything hurts. No one taught me how to use bandages, so I tried my hand at improvising, which
did not work unfortunately. I had bite marks and wounds all over my body, But as time passed, I grew
weaker, and weaker until I had fallen asleep, neglecting my wounds.
Get up! And with only those words, I spring up from my bed, knowing the voice clearly and what the
consequences would be if I did not follow precisely. I did not hesitate. Your training begins. Follow
me he exits, and I scatter to find my weapons, bringing a worn out dagger, a short sword and a
buckler. I depart with great speed.
May I ask where we are headed? As I ask my adoptive father, he stays silent... Staring off into the
distance, and he points forward to the great volcano In the distance...
There... You will fight a demon hound. Surprised and terrified of what he said, I stay silent. Knowing
the fact that, getting terrified and scared will only petrify me and get me killed. That much I know.
After walking for a very long while, we reach the boundaries of hel, the heat destroys my confidence
of even the thought of scratching my opponent with my blade. But on the other hand, Andour, my
father, does not seem to care either way. It is as if the heat does not affect him.
remove all fear that you have from your body, and the heat will not burn you. Show fear while inside,
and the flames with burn you alive. Keep that in mind. And without a moments notice, he continues
his walk towards the

The Struggle Life In Tillie Olsen s I Stand Here Ironing
Throughout every story, every author had reflected their particular own life as themes in their stories
where the character considers about authors regular life like family, friends, works and the media.
Most authors can relate their life experiences as an important theme that resemble the character s
stories where they recall their past memories in their life from the cheerful recollections where they
feel the excitement with their parents or friends to depression and painful memories that they
persevered to withstand their long year to comprehend the reality of life like The Lady With the Dog
by Anton Chekhov and A Wall of Fire Rising by Edwidge Danticat. Others have a tendency to clarify
about the media that are similar to their own life, for instance, racism from Recitatif by Toni Morrison.
One specific story that identified with the author s struggle life was I Stand Here Ironing by Tillie
Olsen. Various characters and events from Olsen s life influenced the story and its characters and
themes. Olsen has revealed the theme of the story is the burden of motherhood which she relate to her
struggle life as a mother. This specific detail demonstrates the author s life fills in as an inspiration to
her composition and impact the work. In the story, I Stand Here Ironing, the author, Tillie Olsen
introduces the role of a compassionate mother that society anticipates ladies who are willing to grasp
to uncover their own individuality is an obstacle in everyday life. Instead

Me Talk Pretty One Day Essay
English 122 is my second course since returning to college after quitting almost 10 years ago. At an
adult student, there are many realities that I must confront in my desire to successfully complete ENG
122 as well as my college education in Graphic Arts at Southern New Hampshire University. Many of
these realities are the same as those faced by David Sedaris in his autobiography, Me Talk Pretty One
Day. As I analyze the autobiography, I will look at the good, bad, and ugly realities of learning French
at a foreign school as told by the author and recognize them for what are: accounts of a bad experience
that ended in success. I will determine if the author s story has any value to the audience reading my
essay as well as personal value to me that can propel all of us to accomplish goals. My analysis will
consider the characters, setting, details, anecdotes, chronological order, author s point of view, purpose
of the autobiography and descriptive details. I realize that the author chose to take French as a student
on campus and that I am taking courses online and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Adulthood is a reality that was faced by the author, are a concern to me and I believe other adult
students that are members of my audience. Basically, is age a barrier or a tool for success. One of the
characteristics shown in the autobiography is that of resilience, a trait responsible for the author s
ability to overcome the barriers encountered while learning French. I too want to remove all barriers
that are in my way and successfully complete English 122 and a college degree. I believe that this is
true of members of my audience as well. I will use quotes directly from the essay as evidence as well
as other written sources on resilience. I need to develop resilience skills to complete my goal. It is also
of value to other adult

National Curriculum Paper
Introduction:
Undeniably, the implementation of a national curriculum will have a significant impact on the
Australian education system. Therefore, my understanding of this educational reform and the
contention arising from this national curriculum will form the basis of this paper. The paper will also
discuss how I will navigate the implemented policies while remaining authentic in my teaching values
and practices. Moreover, this will be done by establishing my understanding of the curriculum in the
educational context before responding to two literary quotes.
In the broadest sense curriculum refers to all courses offered at a school; however, this definition is
ineffective without consideration beyond statements about the content or the ... Show more content on

The mathematics curriculum is organised around the interaction of three content strands and four
proficiency strands. The content strands form framework of the intended curriculum (number and
algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability). Whereas the proficiency strands
form the basis of the enacted curriculum (understanding, fluency, problem solving and reasoning). My
intent is to create an effective learning environment where students develop solid mathematical
content knowledge and skills that are relevant to their specific needs. I believe mathematical
discussion is paramount in the development of understanding and will actively encourage open

Jonah is one of a vast line of important people in the bible who argues with God. As you see in past books of the bible everyone has stood their own against the Lord. • 10. Importance Of Art And Literature In The Perception Of Society The importance of Art and Literature in the Perception of Society Art and literature contain the power to transport one to extraordinary settings and time periods. Depending on the novel, the reader can travel the lands of Narnia and uncover ways to prevent bullying without even leaving the chair. Likewise, with art, one can join the Picasso era and identify the struggles he encountered. Clearly, creative compositions aid in portraying the different aspects of society and Miriam Toews effectively unravels this mystery in her novel The Flying Troutmans. The author demonstrates how art and literature helps one make sense of the world around them by considering different perspectives, by analyzing character developments, and by building intellect. This eventually leads to self understanding. Art and literature become a source of guidance when one learns from the integrated insights of human experiences. Many writers incorporate unique characters, allowing the audience to view situations through unfamiliar perspectives and discover significant information. • 11. Traditional Methods Of Managing Personal Income There are three traditional methods of managing personal income. 1. Budgeting, 2. Keeping a spending history, and 3. Doing nothing (also known as living from paycheck to paycheck). Budgeting involves setting what percent of future income is to be spent on which categories of expenses, and then recording all purchases in order to track how well spending is staying within the predefined limits. The process sounds very simple, however, it is difficult, in my opinion, to stick with a budget for very long. The energy and dedication needed to keep track of where the money goes is tremendous. I ve tried budgeting on several occasions and failed miserably because I couldn t stomach keeping track of every penny I spent. Traditional budgets also tend to fail because the setting of rigid spending limits does not lend itself well to being flexible. When unforeseen expenses pop up, a budget can be rendered useless very quickly. It s my experience that budgets can feel like monetary straight jackets that are soon abandoned. Spending Histories A Vicious Cycle Keeping a spending history also involves the recording of every penny spent. The intent is to use the spending history as a basis for identifying spending habits that can be improved and then making needed changes to future spending patterns. The main weakness of keeping a spending history is that it is focused on past activity and, therefore, is of little help when a person is trying to make immediate decisions about ... Efficient Market Hypothesis and the Effect of High Frequency Trading The efficient market hypothesis (EMH) has consistently remained in the forefront of finance theory for decades. As technology has advanced, the ability to assess the efficient market hypothesis has increased exponentially and so have the opportunities to exploit it. Tactics such as high frequency trading and insider trading threaten the dependability of the efficient market hypothesis. EMH is a rudimentary theory that implies the value of an asset is directly correlated or about equal to the intrinsic value of the asset. (Brigham Houston, 2012) The intrinsic value of a stock is the actual value of a company or an asset based on an underlying perception of its true value including all aspects of the business, in terms of both tangible and intangible factors (investopedia.com). Investors use this logic to determine whether to buy or sell a stock depending on its perceived value with respect to the intrinsic value. Whether the investor employs an active or passive investment strategy, the EMH is a rational decision making process to ensure a confident investment. The efficient market hypothesis is constantly being analyzed for its validity in the current market. There are a multitude of external factors contributing to the reluctance of relying on the EMH. Specifically, the rise of high frequency trading has significantly called into question the legitimacy of the efficient market. High ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The retail implications are that most stores tend to follow the trends and not necessarily set them. Americans are more conservative than Europeans in their apparel so if a new retailer is trying to break into the market, he/she should consider how they want to market their clothing. If they want to stand out, maybe they should invest in newer, trendier clothing. If not, then they should keep their target market in mind. I don t agree with that statement however, I do believe Americans are trendy themselves. Many people I know rely on celebrities, magazines, talk shows, and television to figure out the latest styles and how to wear certain styles. Some of these themes include, people are defined by the choices they make, family is worth dying for, and survival depends on being dedicated to others, not yourself. The characters can teach us a lot by their experiences and Rick Yancey most likely did this on purpose. There are many examples in the text to support these recurring themes. To start with, we will examine the theme, people are defined by the choices they make. One of the greatest examples for supporting this theme in The 5th Wave, is the character, Evan Walker. Urbanization also causes a respiratory health concern due to an increase in industrial activity. Water and air pollution closely relate to the result of urbanization. It is noted that the majority of things that are byproducts of human civilization cause pollution to water and air. The major causes of water pollution in this area is toxic chemicals entering the waterways on a regular basis. Ecology currently estimates that Puget Sound receives millions of pounds of toxic chemicals every year from surface runoff, groundwater discharges, and municipal and wastewater outfall pipes. These contaminates include oil and grease, PCBs, and phthalates as well as toxic heavy metals such as copper, lead, and zinc. These toxins concentrate in urban bays and enter the food chain (Department of Ecology (n.d.)). This plays a major factor in health risk for individuals of the community. When chemical pollutants enter waterways, and contaminate fish, the human consumption could be tragic. Health conditions that may arise from toxic waste in water may include organ failure or possible death. Closely related to the urbanization of Washington is air pollution. • 25. Three Era s, Three Novels Progress is a distinctive venture of man. The constant need to predict and control, instrumented by science and technology, has led to astonishing possibilities for which the long term consequences are unpredictable. There is, however, no ultimate goal of progress; and as limits continue to be broken, the boundaries of human interference in nature are expanding indefinitely. Everywhere, there is a sense of the unconquerable forces unwittingly evoked to serve the project of progress, bringing the project itself into question. He is driven by the philosophy that, as stated by his esteemed professor, The labours of men of genius, however erroneously directed, scarcely ever fail in ultimately turning to the solid advantage of mankind (34, sic). It is ideas such as this that lay the foundation for the conflicts that inevitably follow intrusion upon natural law. Men of genius, as Shelley will portray, may have conceptions of the reality of the physical world, but cannot attain a complete conception of the natural. Yet again and again, men will try. Frankenstein s narrator is another plagued by the reality of impossible ambition. On his ship, caught in ice, he believes his will is strong enough to achieve their freedom: Oh! The English pushed the natives out and eventually did not care about race, merely about the money that came from labor . The Land Act of 1913, was believed to be the initial beginning of the apartheid laws. This act initiated by white supremacists marked the first major downfall of segregation for the colored and Indian peoples of South Africa. The Afrikans were essentially divided into nine nations and approximately 93% of the land was reserved for the white people. 2/3 of the population of South Africa at the time was considered African, or native people, and these people were all banned from freely buying land , making conditions very harsh, and malnutrition was extremely common . The hypothesis of this report is that the military reforms instituted by Gaius Marius ultimately paved the way for the fall of the Roman Republic. The reforms instituted by Marius were designed as a way to strengthen the Republic by professionalizing the Roman military, but instead resulted in long term political consequences that contributed to the decline of the Republic and the creation of the Empire. In this report, the decline of the republic specifically refers to the loss of the Senate s authority over Rome s generals. He then offered the masses a permanent career as professional soldiers, and the opportunity to gain spoils on the campaign. With little hope of gaining status in other ways, the masses flocked to join Marius. The cause of this reform was largely due to recurring recruitment problems faced by the Roman republic, as most soldiers were expected to return to their farms after long campaigns, but since the campaigns were becoming increasingly longer due to the distance of the conflicts from rome, the farms were left deserted and ruined do to prolonged absence of workers. As such, the returning soldiers found themselves without property making them illegible for military service, thus weakening the army. (William G. This includes an examination of such influences as the social characteristics of the setting and the learner and the social rules for second language use. While typically associated with these models, Vygotsky s sociocultural theory, which is based in his study of psychology, does not attempt to use culture to explain how language is acquired. Instead, Vygotsky identifies the relationship between language and culture as a dynamic, reciprocal and constantly evolving experience whereby language and culture are constituted in and of each other. Lev Semenovich Vygotsky developed what is now called The Sociocultural Theory in Russia during the 1920s and 1930s. The core of his idea was that it is the interaction between people and their surroundings that results in deeper human development. Central to his belief was the important role community plays in helping humans, especially children, progress and integrate in their social environment. While often represented as a complete concept, Vygotsky was still investigating and testing many of his theories when he died suddenly in 1934. Connecting the public to the building should be more than just creating a fascinating and interesting facade. My idea is to describe how a building is able to connect to people, by allowing them to not just walk inside or around but on top of the building creating a public space. The reason why I chose this topic is that I wanted to make a connection to my studio project, and how I developed the idea for it. In addition, I wanted to compare it to the Oslo Opera House and how this assisted me in arriving at my final design. My studio project and the Oslo Opera House have a different scale however, I think they share some similar concepts. The idea of togetherness, open space, and easy movement access to the public, and most significantly its connection to the landscape. Firstly, the location of the buildings is disparate, the Oslo Opera House does not really have a connection to the landscape, since it is mostly part of the city surrounded by other buildings and where traffic is heavy. There might be some connection between the Oslo Opera House and the landscape of the river, which has influenced the design known as The Wave Wll .
