Mass V. Mary s Catholic Church
The religious institution that I observed is affiliated with Christianity. Catholics worship is called
Mass and that is what I observed and reflected about. As many of my friends are Catholic, I thought it
would be interesting to go and experience a Catholic Mass, and watch what all happens during one.
Given the opportunity to go to St. Mary s Catholic church in my hometown with my friend s family,
and experience the Mass first hand.
As I stepped into the church, I already felt a warm, welcoming feeling. A couple of the members of the
church were at the door to greet one another to point us in the direction of where the worship would
take place. From there, I had to dip my hands in the holy water and make a cross over my, which was

From listening to the daily readings and reflecting on them with psalms and hymns, I could see a
focused approach to the word. All the readings motivated us to see and face all the challenges that
were in the real world today. The gospel and sermon spoke by the priest were, even more of a
celebration of the word and to proclaim our faith outside the church. Following the time of listening
and reflecting on the readings of the day, I noticed that it was then time to reflect and act upon faith.
Worshippers would bring up offerings and gifts that would be blessed and accepted by Jesus. I think
the public display of communion with all the worshipers was evident when everyone went up to the
altar to receive the bread, which is similar my church. I think that the second part of Mass showed the
actions of faith that were taken after celebrating the word of God. Overall, the service was pleasing
and enjoyable to observe. The visit made me see and understand the Mass and the symbolism that the
church itself has. I enjoyed the first part of listening to the word and having the priest apply the
sermon and readings directly into our lives today and then the second part, seeing everyone participate
in gathering gifts and communion, showing their faith and proclaiming it. I found the choir to be
interesting that they do most of the singing with sometimes everyone singing but overall it was a good

In the short term, this would be a good trend, but if it continues, it could be a sign that Sample
Company is not keeping a big investment in assets, because not that as the denominator in this ROI
calculation, a low asset figure can be used to help drive up the overall result. Meaning that if this trend
continues, it may be an indication of increased operations rather than improvement in asset efficiency.
Stock Performance
The common stock value increased 54.8%, from $42/share to $65/share, between 2000 and 2001. This
is an indicate that the market likes what it sees in the performance and the management of Sample
Company. In addition, it paid 1.2% in dividends for the past two years. Another key indicator, the
Price to Earnings Ratio, fell from 12.0 to 10.7. This is not enough to be alarming. In fact, some
investors, myself included, feel that lower Price to Earnings Ratios are not necessarily a good thing.
The reason being that if a company is struggling to pay out large earnings per share, to make the
denominator in the P/E equation large enough to keep the P/E ratio low, then often such financial
pressures can take the attention of the management away from the company s operations and other
important issues, like surviving as a going concern in a tough business climate.
Activity of Sample Company
The activity ratios measure the company s management of asset levels and sales (Marshall, 2002).

Rhetorical Analysis Of Amiri Baraka s Amiri For The...
Reading through The Dutchman for the first time, I had the impression that it was just another story of
a black man being oppressed by another white person in the mid 20th century. However, upon closer
inspection, I have found that this play dives much deeper into a variety of different aspects. For
example, if we are reading this play with the knowledge that this is written in a postmodern era, this
gives us the freedom to explore which social constructs are being torn down within the play itself.
This play and the author, Amiri Baraka, are sending powerful messages through the text that can
clearly be identified using the lens of postmodernism. He uses the characters in this play to depict
different themes. For example, Clay is the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In reality, Lula was simply generalizing a whole race of people and it happened to connect with Clay.
Lula [Strangely irritated] Don t get smart with me, Buster. I know you like the palm of my hand.
(Baraka 4). Lula s actions and thoughts could be Baraka s way of stating that he feels over generalized
in his modern day society.
Lula is the perfect example of someone attempting to gain power and dominance over another
individual while giving the perception of her being under the control of another person. Lula is
constantly luring Clay towards her, then proceeds to insult him. She then acted like it was simply a
joke among old friends. For example, in the beginning of the play, while Clay and Lula are still
chatting on the train, she makes a remark about his suit and who used to wear it. LULA... Boy, those
narrow shoulder clothes come from a tradition you ought to feel oppressed by. A three button suit.
What right do you have to be wearing a three button suit and a striped tie? (Baraka 5). On top of that,
she continues to remind Clay that his grandfather was a slave and that Clay is not white, in fact, the
opposite of white; black. LULA Your grandfather was a slave, he didn t go to Harvard..... I bet you
never thought once you were a black nigger. (Baraka 5). As Lula continues about Clay s attire, he
seems to be getting more and more uncomfortable. She later goes on to admit the fact

The Economic Impacts of GMO s and Large Agribusiness
When focusing on a major topic like genetically modified organisms from an economic standpoint, it
is crucial to cover the varying effects of large agribusiness companies that run the biotechnological
field, primarily Monsanto. Monsanto, originally founded as a chemical company, has risen to hold a
biotechnical science monopoly. While a monopoly is never a good thing, the issues with Monsanto are
much larger than that. How exactly do Monsanto and its fellow biotechnology companies cause
damage to everything they interfere with? From the death, destruction, and deformation of Vietnam to
financial damage to local farmers, from the dangerous chemicals placed in their crops to the false
advertising of their company, Monsanto and its cohorts may be the root of all problems and negative
aspects related to genetically modified organisms. Monsanto and many other large agribusiness
companies claim to be solving world hunger. This is a false advertisement. Only about 20% of global
food production comes from large factory farms, while the other 80% comes from from small, local
farms (Scott Cooney, The Inspired Economist). Many important crops are not even fully dedicated to
feeding anyone, they go to making other products. For example only 2% of GMO soy is actually eaten
by people and only 10% of GMO corn goes towards foods, with half of that being in high

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a DNA virus that affects the liver and belongs to the Hepadnaviridae group
(Takkenberg, Weegink, Zaaijer, amp; Reesink, 2010). According to an article in Vox Sanguines, an
international journal of transfusion medicine, (Takkenberg, Weegink, Zaaijer, amp; Reesink, 2010)
about 400 million people worldwide are chronically infected with HBV, and 2 billion people have
serological evidence of past or present HBV infection . HBV, formerly known as serum hepatitis

Looking at the data provided by CDC (Department of Health and Human Services, 2011) during 2010
2011 there is an average incidence of HBV of 8 (per 10 million people) in 2010 and 6 (per 10 million
people) in 2011 (appendix C). This decrease of 2 (per 10 million people) from 2010 2011 may just be
a coincidence and further analysis of data over a larger period of time would be needed. The decrease
of 2 persons may not seem like a lot; however with continued education, vaccination, and awareness
of prevention, this could indeed signify a downward trend of acute HBV. The trend of occurrence over
the course of each year, 2010 and 2011, shows a steady increase without any major spike or deviations
(appendix A amp; B). With the transmission of HBV being mainly from drug use and exchange of
fluids between infected individuals (sexually), there is no factor that should cause a spike. Continuing
preventative measures will promote lowering the incidence of occurrence, however until a cure is
found HBV will still register a minimal number of cases a year.

Horizontal Analysis (A. 1. a) A horizontal analysis can be defined as the study of percentage changes
in comparative statements (Charles T. Horngren, 2008, p. 746). It is useful in determining a company s
financial stability. This section will analyze Competition Bikes Incorporated s (CBI) percentage
changes from years 6 to 7 and then 7 to 8. The report will include an analysis of CBI s comparative
income statement and balance sheet.
Between years 6 and 7 CBI s Net Sales increased by 33.3% for a change of $1,495,000. The increase
of 33% indicates strength for the company because it means that the ... Show more content on

This is a weakness for CBI because it could indicate that they are not collecting from their buyers in
efficient or timely manner. When a company has large amounts of funds that are uncollected they do
not have the cash on hand to purchase raw materials and pay expenses, which can negatively impact
its ability to turn a profit. This will be examined further when the average collection period is analyzed
later in this report. Between years 6 and 7 CBI s Total Assets have increased by 2.2% for a change of
$93,741. This shows strength in CBI because by increasing their assets they also increase their value.
This can help instill confidence in current as well as potential shareholders.
Between years 6 and 7 CBI s Accounts Payable and Notes Payable increased by 192% for a change of
$128,820. This indicates a weakness as the company has more than doubled their debts between these
two years. Significantly increasing debt can impact shareholder confidence, which could impact the
market value of CBI stock. Between years 6 and 7 CBI s Long Term Liabilities decreased by 5.6% for
a change of negative ($105,000). This indicates strength for CBI as it demonstrates that the company
as allocated monies to pay down their long term debt further reducing their liabilities. Between years 6
and 7 CBI s Retained Earnings increased by 17.4% for a change of $170,121. This is strength for CBI

What Are The Rewards of Becoming A Landlord? Owning rental property offers many financial and
lifestyle benefits. The number one reward and benefit of being a landlord and having rental property is
you own the property. As long as you are not breaking the law in the process, it is yours to live in,
enjoy, freely and rent to whomever you chose as long as you follow the law and do it legally.
Many have amassed a fortune in property rental. Even in this economy, if you hold onto your property

Most first time landlords still have full time jobs and may find it difficult to handle both. Even though
being a landlord does not have to be a full time job, depending on your resources, it will take more
than a few hours a week to do the job. Most landlords need to be reachable and available 24 hours a
day, to attend to or answer some form of emergent problem or non emergent problem from their
tenants (i.e. a pipe burst, the lights went out or a loud and unruly neighbor/tenant).
This brings you, the potential land, to the problems with tenants. Problem tenants can be one of the
unfortunate problems and facts of owning rental property. There will always be a possibility that a
landlord will get the tenant from Hell , someone who either doesn t pay the rent or doesn t pay rent on
time, who destroys the property or who call and bugs the landlord continuously for just about
anything. A proper background check or screening process will help eliminate some problematic
tenants. However, a properly executed lease or rental agreement will probably help deal with most
annoying tenants.
There may be times when the landlord experiences problems with leasing their apartments, such as in
a recession, a soft market or a modest/bad economy which can and does not exclude the best of real
estate investors/landlords. However, realistically, vacancies for a landlord will are a reality no matter

Augustus Of Primaporta Analysis
Rome was a very large and powerful city by the first BC but the reign of Augustus transformed it into
an imperial city. In 31 BCE, Augustus became the supreme commander of the Roman Republic.
During the Augustan Revolution, art and architecture pushed a political agenda. Art portraying
Augustus remains common throughout his reign. The art and architecture helped reinforce Augustus
political message that he was the restorer of Rome.
An example of Augustus artistic propaganda is the statue Augustus of Primaporta from 20 BCE. The
statue is a depiction of Augustus as commander of the army. Augustus is depicted as very youthful and
perfect. The statue is very idealized but does include some of Augustus true features. He is dressed in
military clothing while standing in a pose as if he is addressing his troops. Augustus is portrayed
barefoot with cupid riding a dolphin at his side which represents his divinity. His armor also endorses
the political agenda that the gods are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

illustrates Augustus military victories and connection to the gods. The statue of Augustus portrayed as
Pontifex Maximus or chief priest from 12 BCE is also a propaganda driven portrait. August is
displayed with his head covered and wearing a robe. He looks to be dressed for a sacrifice. The statue
is still very idealized with Augustus looking strong and youthful but true features still present. The
statue itself displays that Augustus is not only the ruler of Rome but also the religious leader as

The Three Political Parties In America
A political party is an organization that sponsors candidates for public office under the organization s
name. A political party platform is a formal set of principal goals which are supported by a political
party or individual candidate. Typically, platforms of candidates within their parties are consistent.
This is partially because of voter s tendency to vote with their party, and partially because of
expectations of candidates. Three political parties in America are Republicans, Democrats, and the
Green party. Tax reform, environmental issues, welfare and poverty, and immigration are all issues
that different parties view from different angles. Tax reform has been an integral part of American
politics since the nation s birth. The Boston Tea Party was an initial display of how strongly the
colonists felt about taxes. Today, citizens feelings towards taxes can be expressed through ... Show

As more scientific evidence has surfaced in recent years in relevance to global warming, many
informed individuals feel as though the environment is an important political issue. The Republican
party stresses that conservation is a conservative value and private property ownership is key to an
environmental agenda. The Democratic party aims to restore wilderness and watersheds for
generations to come. However, they honor hunting fishing heritage via more conservation lands. The
Green party advocates strongly for environmental issues, as made clear by their name. This party
believes that: the Human species has no right to exploit animals, sustainable society lives within
planet s resource limits, and we should safely dispose of all waste we create. A scientist who knows
the effects of global warming and the state of our planet may feel obligated to vote for the Green party
because of their environment issues, solely. Therefore, this shows how a single issue may sway a voter

My Chinese Immigrant Parents
My international background has shaped who I am today because of the influence of my Chinese
immigrant parents. My parents never had an easy life. My parents, who lived in poverty in China,
immigrated to the United States hoping for a better life and to pursue the American Dream. They
immigrated to the Unites States with no money and no knowledge of the English language. The
language barrier alone created a mass obstacle for their early life in America. My dad had once told
me that at the age of 13 he was already cooking for his entire family while working to provide
financial support for his parents and siblings. Despite my parent s challenges, they were still able to

environment that I was raised in, has shaped me to become a disciplined and responsible individual.
Having been raised by my parents who are Chinese, I have had the honor of learning several cultural
aspects of my heritage and becoming bilingual in mandarin and English. I learned to celebrate Chinese

disciplined individual, for providing me with the inspiration that I need when I fail at times, and most
importantly, for finding the courage to send me off to college even without the full financial ability to.

Crime And Punishment And The Punishment
In every country, a crime committed has a punishment that goes hand in hand with it. The nature of
the crime determines the punishment that follows it. The nature of the punishment also depends on the
law that operates in the country in which the crime is committed. Different crimes attract different
penalties. For instance, crimes involving murder may attract capital punishment on the criminal, or life
jail sentence depending on the circumstances surrounding the murder. Capital offences do attract
capital punishments as well, and again it depends on what the supreme law of the land stipulates. In
light of this short analysis, this essay will analyse a case that involved a murderer, and the punishment
that followed him upon confirmation of the crime he committed. It will also compare the punishment
given to the murderer with the punishments available in other countries of the European continent.
Crime and Punishment was written during the time when Marxism was beginning to flourish within
Tsarist ruled Russia. Dostoyevsky, when writing Crime and Punishment espoused a desire to
counteract Russian Nihilism and in the novel pointed out the dangers of utilitarianism juxtaposing it as
a reason, which in his view fueled radical sentiments upon the populace. In this light, it is important to
take into consideration the reasoning behind the acts of murder committed by the main character
Roskalnikov within the context of Dostoyevsky s rejection of Marxist views. The reasoning

Achilles Analysis
Hector is standing outside of Troy as the only Trojan left. Hector is too ashamed to join the other
Trojans in their retreat because of his previous orders for them to camp outside although Priam begs
him to come inside. Hector stood firm as Achilles approached him and Hector knows that Achilles has
come to fight by the evil look in Achilles eyes. Hector is willing to fight and will not go down without
putting up a fight for his home. Hector at first tries to negotiate with the great warrior, Achilles,
because he knows he doesn t stand a chance in battle but Achilles does not even consider any of the
negotiations because Achilles wants revenge for the death of Patroklos. Hector realized that and gave
up on trying to negotiate with Achilles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And ran, leaving the gates behind, with Achilles on his tail, confident in his speed. You have seen a
falcon in a long smooth dive, attacking a fluttering dove, far below in the hills. The falcon screams,
swoops, and plunges in its lust for prey, so Achilles swooped and Hector trembled in the shadow of
Troy s wall. (156 167). This simile is about the chase between Hector and Achilles. Homer uses this
simile brilliantly whereas he compares Achilles the great warrior to the ruthless bird, falcon, which
will get its prey. Homer compares this chase to a predator prey situation, just like a falcon and a dove,
eventually, the predator will catch up to its prey and attack. Just like Achilles will eventually do when
he catches his prey, Hector. Zeus debates whether he should save Hector or not but the goddess Athena
persuades Zeus to let be because Hector s time has come. Achilles knows the weak points of the armor
that Hector is armed with and thrusts his spear through Hector s throat. While Hector is nearing his
death, he pleads with Achilles so that his body can be sent back to the Trojans for a proper burial. Just
like how the falcon leaves its prey after devouring what it wants, the falcon leaves the body left to rot,
as what Achilles did with Hector where he let the dogs and birds maul at the dead body. Achilles then
tied Hector s body to the back of his chariot and drags it around through the dirt

The Tragedy Of Hamlet
In The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark by William Shakespeare, many scholars are known to
debate the controversial topics that are present within the play. This includes whether or not Hamlet is
pretending to be mad, if an Oedipus complex is present within the play, and if it is the reason for his
delay to action. In Hamlet there is evidence that Hamlet is only feigning madness and in reality
identifies with Claudius, thereby delaying Claudius death. This is largely in part due to the Oedipus
complex that is present within Hamlet. In Hamlet it is debated whether or not Hamlet s madness in the
play is real. However, the evidence points to the idea that Hamlet is only pretending to be mad. When
Hamlet tells Horatio As I perchance hereafter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ultimately, the reason for the delay to action in Hamlet is left ambiguous but, one such credible
explanation is that the delay is due to the Oedipus complex. Hamlet sees his own sexual desires
manifested in Claudius so therefore he is unable to take action and kill the man he identifies with.
Sigmund Freud states that, Hamlet is able to do anything except take vengeance on the man who did
away with his father and took that father s place with his mother, the man who shows him the
repressed wishes of his own childhood realized (41). Hamlet is unable to punish Claudius for killing
his father because Hamlet realizes that he himself is literally no better than the sinner whom he is to
punish (Freud 41). This idea is confirmed in the last moments of the play when Hamlet s mother dies.
Hamlet throughout the play struggles to kill Claudius because he represents Hamlet s childhood
wishes, however, only after Gertrude dies is Hamlet s childhood wishes killed along with her. Hamlet
is finally able to kill Claudius because Gertrude has now died. Because Gertrude is the object of
Hamlet s desire, and she has now died, Hamlet s desire for his mother has also died (Schaeffer). With
nothing left to cause him to identify with Claudius, Hamlet is finally able to complete the task that was
given to

Jesus Seminar Critique
One critique to the Jesus Seminar was the motives behind their work. The media often portrayed the
group to be comprised mostly of former Christians, attacking hardest on the group s leader Robert
Funk and cochair John Crossan. Critics went as far to describe their meetings as having the air of a
village atheists convention (Powell, 110). Such an allegation gave rise to the popular belief that the
motives of the scholars were to get revenge on institutionalized religion for not being accepting to
them. I believe the media was too quick to judge the motives of the scholars by attacking their
backgrounds. Just because their work was controversial doesn t mean it was subjective with
underlying personal vendettas. It seems unlikely that a group ... Show more content on

The most rebutted aspect of the work done by the scholars was their idiosyncrasy to equate
unverifiable with unauthentic. Most scholars who study the elements attribute to the life of Jesus stand
on common ground when it comes to the realization that many of the sayings and deeds associated to
Jesus in the Gospels lack sufficient evidence to establish authenticity. However, to many scholars
insufficient evidence means an element cannot be verified, and therefore should not be deemed as
historical. In contrast, the Jesus Seminar went beyond this scope and maintained that Jesus did not say
or did not do things that cannot be authenticated by evidence. For example, it is widely accepted that
there is very little evidence to support whether or not Jesus was born from his virgin mother, Mary. As
a result, this element of his life has just been something that one would believe on the foundation of
religious faith rather than historical science. However, the Jesus Seminar applied a post Enlightenment
historical scientific view to this element in order to determine authenticity. Under this assessment,
they determined not only what is confirmable but what also is scientifically possible. Therefore, the
scholars deemed the virgin birth as non historical, concluding that Jesus had been conceived through
normal sexual intercourse between a male and female because it fit the paradigm known today. This
stance held by the Jesus Seminar turn[s] a corner in the traditional understanding of the relationship
that faith and philosophy bear to science and history (Powell, 115). For this reason, I reject the
integrity of their work. I believe faith and philosophy should be kept separate of science and history,
unless the two aim to support one another. Rescinding concepts of faith simply because they do fall
within current scientific boundaries is illegitimate. The major flaw of the Jesus Seminar is their

`` Pride `` By John Aquinas
When one hears the word pride , one would rarely imagine a modest person who devotes their time to
volunteer work and philanthropy. Typically, one would picture an arrogant politician or a movie star, a
person so self absorbed that they almost entirely ignore the needs of those around them. However,
even the humblest acts of virtue can arise from pride as well. The story of Icarus, the boy who became
entranced with his own pride and flew too close to the sun, is told time and time again; however, there
is another story of pride one hears less often, the person who takes pride in their own humility. Rather
than take pride in typical attributes such as wealth, prestige, or even appearance, these people take
pride in their modesty and virtue. In this way, pride comes from an unexpected source and is difficult
to avoid since it takes occasion even from good deeds (Aquinas 7). While the other six deadly sins
present both helpful and harmful characteristics of the sin, pride is complex in corrupting even the
most well intentioned actions. At first, it would seem that humility would be the opposite of pride
since it is defined as, having a lowly opinion of oneself ( Humility ). However, there are also
occasions in which a person corrupts the virtue by using it to enhance their image and view it as an
example of their own excellence. For example, although most of those volunteering at the soup
kitchen want to improve their community or provide to those less fortunate, there

The first thing I think of or most people think of when they hear the word Mayans, is how they think

Aristotle And Jesus Relationship Essay
If you were to ask Jesus Christ whether he has friends, he would most likely say of course I do, I am
certainly friends with all of God s children. However, after reading Aristotle, the question becomes, If
Jesus has friends, of which sort are they? . Aristotle defines friendship as, Any association of people
who spend time and do things together, share in pains and pleasure, and wish for each other s good,
(Nicomachean Ethics 1166a 1 10). Addressing each aspect of this definition, with the twelve disciples
in mind, the reader concludes that they certainly spend time together, share in pains and pleasure, but
the sticking point is whether they wish for each other s good. The answer to that question determines
if in fact Jesus has friends what sort they are. There is a multitude of evidence presented in the Gospel
of Mark that seems to indicate that Jesus is incapable of having friends. First, it is nearly impossible to
consider the relationship between Jesus and the people he heals as friendship. Furthermore, the people
that he heals often ignore his directives and, after healing somebody Jesus commanded them not to tell
anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it, (Mark 7 36). It is difficult for a
friendship to exist between a doctor and patient, the difficulties would be further compounded if the
doctor gave the patient directions which were brazenly ignored. After eliminating the possibility that
Jesus is friends with the people he

Argumentative Essay On English Class
What I am about to do is inform you on how to survive the ferocious English 1302 course to make life
a bit easier on you. I mean, you re at the edge of your seat dying with loads of work, starving like a

I learned that by annotating a certain part of the reading, it helped increase my understanding. Not
only that but it helped me not miss a single bit of important information. Writing notes in the margins
of the text was really helpful because it was a summary of the entire paragraph and whenever I would
look back at my notes, it reminded me of what I read. Also, circling words I didn t know was very
accommodating because again, it helped me understand the concept a bit more. Underlining words
that seem important to you is a big tip I suggest because you are able to use that information when you
are talking about your source. You can expand that information by linking it to another similar source.
Therefore, it is important to annotate. It ll take up extra time but it will be worth

Essay Alternative Fuel
Abstract
The feasibility of adding AFVs (alternative fuel vehicles) to the Lotus Rental Car fleet is examined in
the attached research. The advantages and disadvantages of AFVs were analyzed. In addition, the
environmental effect of AFV use on future generations is also discussed. By comparing the overall
information and data of AFVs vs. petroleum fueled vehicles, and researching how other fleets have
successfully incorporated AFVs, the result is conclusive evidence that the addition of AFVs to the
Lotus fleet is a viable course of action for the future of Lotus.

Using alternative fuels helps reduce our nation s dependence on imported oil and improves air quality.
The Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EPAct) defines alternative fuels as electricity, ethanol, natural gas,
propane, methanol, hydrogen, and biodiesel (U.S. Department of Energy, What is the Energy Policy
Act of 1992, para. 2).
One of the main issues that requires examination is to find out more details regarding the many
different types of alternative fuels. With that thought in mind, the next step in our research process
was to weigh the pros and cons of the various alternative fuel types that would be feasible for the
Lotus Company to consider.
Since we are dealing with a rental fleet, both the cost of implementing a certain type of alternative fuel
vehicle as well as the availability of refueling stations must be considered when comparing the
viability of the different fuel types. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the availability of
refueling stations is an issue for vehicles that run on propane and natural gas (U.S. Department of
Energy, Alternative Fuels, para.8). With the number of refueling stations being inadequate for propane
and natural gas, these two alternative fuels can be ruled out as an option for the Lotus fleet because the
Lotus customers are not going to rent vehicles if refueling stations are not readily available. In
addition, the problems with using natural gas vehicles are going to

Death and the Maiden
The Polanski film Death and the Maiden is a wonderful and intelligent interpretation of Ariel Dorfman
s human rights problem play. Polanski has produced, in this film, an exceptional piece of direction, in
which his own personal, emotional input is evident. The main theme of the play is an extremely
personal one for both playwright (and scriptwriter) and director. Both Dorfman and Polanski have had
to face and flee the horrors of dictatorship and human rights violations: Dorfman in Chile, under
General Augusto Pinochet, and Polanski in Poland under the Nazis. But despite this similarity in past

Weaver s powerful acting conveys the unmistakable tension associated with an incredible amount of
suppressed anger. It is not until the following scenes, when she is finally confronted with the cause of
that anger, however, that we see its full magnitude and destructive potential.
In the surreal, dim lighting of her bedroom Paulina is shaken by a strangely disturbing laugh upon
recognising Roberto Miranda s voice as that of her tormentor. This moment sees the birth or
manifestation of another facet of Paulina s character, the part of Paulina s mind that fantasized about
doing to her torturers what they had done to her. This is the unbelievably unreasonable Paulina; she is
a Fury, a mythical deity, the embodiment of vengeance, unsusceptible to male logic or opportunistic,
careerist rationalisation. Polanski makes Paulina throw the car over the cliff edge. In doing this she is
not only destroying a phallic symbol, and thus undermining Roberto s sexuality and any claims he has
on sexual dominance or superiority, she is destroying a perfect symbol of the male thirst for power and
control, and the pragmatic logic to which her need for revenge has been sacrificed, into the infinite,
chaotic abyss that defies all these principles, and unquestionably swallows it up. In doing this she

How might the role of the police officer in these situations be made easier? 99 101 205i In the class

Some theorists speculate that people used Stonehenge to hang criminals, hence the name. We will
never know precisely how the name was formed. (fortunecity)
How was Stonehenge built:
Stonehenge was built during three distinct periods. Each took centuries to built, its unknown why each
stage ended abruptly
Period I is believed that the stone age builders began in approximately 3100 BC and ended in about
2300 BC. Neolithic workers set out to create a nearly perfect circle out of soil and chalk using only
stone tools and animal bones. They most likely pounded a wooden stake into the ground at the point
that was to be the center of the circle, attach along rope to it, and marked the circular path of the ropes
unattached end. Workers, using pickaxes made from red deer antler and shovels made from the
shoulder blades of oxen, then dug deep pits into the chalky earth all the way around the circle. Most of
the pits were then connected, forming a fairly continuous ditch running the circumference of the circle
and earthen embankment of the displaced soil. They left a wide opening on the north east side for the
main entrance into the circle, and a small gap on the southeast side may have been left there to form a
smaller, alternate entrance (Wendy Mass 36) There were 56 evenly spaces holes around its perimeter.
And at the entrance there were a pair of stones. (fortunecity 1)
Period II began in about 2150 BC. The

Comparing Gilgamesh And The Book Of Genesis
The Epic of Gilgamesh depicts a story about Gilgamesh, a king on earth who is two thirds god and
one third human. However, he is young and oppresses his people ruthlessly. The story takes the reader
on a journey through a series of events that ultimately leads Gilgamesh to find his true self. One
important historical event that took place is the flood, which occurs in both the Epic of Gilgamesh and
the Book of Genesis in the Old Testament. The Epic of Gilgamesh and the Book of Genesis in the Old
Testament share a great amount of similarities.
In both books, there are Gods who possess almighty powers on earth. In the Epic of Gilgamesh, Enlil,
the god of the winds, calls for a flood to end all of mankind because man was too noisy. Similarly, in
the Book of Genesis, God calls for a great flood to destroy all mankind because they were sinning. In

However, this class was linked to year eleven, comprising of 16 and 17 year olds. This gave rise to
considerable discussion, as the group believed that the ideal time to learn values is more appropriate
during adolescence, such as years seven or eight. After a considerable reflection it was deduced that to
a degree it is true that in partying knowledge and values upon younger students is both more effective
and easier, as at this age they are more impressionable and accepting of new ideals. However, learning
is not a an end product and the intent of the lesson was more about nurturing the ideas that the
students have already subconsciously gained, whilst aiming to foster and enhance these values, in
order for them to emerge consciously enriched. The teachings of Sankey and Kim (2013) under the
umbrella of the Dynamic System Theory greatly influenced these decisions, were they stress a non
linear and highly variable process of development, and thus, signifying an older age group does not
quantify the need to disenfranchise themselves from moral development.
The makeup of the lesson was divided into two interrelated activities that were designed towards the
developmental needs of the students as well as the importance of multicultural relations. The activities
also did not shun away from their own significant pedagogical issues, specifically deducing ways in

place for great opportunities to start over, live easily, and to turn small fortunes into a great wealth.
In William Bradford s Of Plymouth Plantation he articulates that living in young America was a tough
life that included dangerous living, starvation and disease. Bradford sailed from Holland with the
Pilgrims and when their first governor died in 1621 Bradford was elected. Bradford s opinion was well

adolescents, so much so that young people ages 13 to 24 make up the 1 out of every 4 new HIV

exchange for surrender was the best option. Eisenhower however, did not agree with this. The
Germans had an aggressive army outnumbering the Allies Powers 2 to 1. But in the end, the invasion
of Italy was successful. In 1943, president Franklin D. Roosevelt decided that Eisenhower would be
the Supreme Allied Commander, not Marshall. during this time he was in charge of planning and
organizing the attack on the coast of Normandy which was later referred to Operation Overlord.
Eisenhower had improved on his organizing and planning by previous operations in which he
encountered. Now Eisenhower was extra careful on his planning. Although after continuous
arguments with president Franklin D. Roosevelt on using the French resistance as a decoy to delay the
ongoing Germans, and getting help from the British in the air, Eisenhower plan was now in motion.
On June 6, 1944 also known as D Day, was the commencing of Eisenhower s Operation Overlord.

Comparing The Silk Road And Its Effect In China And The West
3. Describe the Silk Road and its use and effect in China and the West.
The Silk Road and its use and effect in China and the West can be best described as the primary trade
routes from China to Italy, specifically Rome. The name Silk Road would lead one to think it was
simply a road traveled much like traveling from North Carolina to California using Interstate 40. The
Silk Road was much more than that. The trade routes of the Silk Road had a great and long lasting
effect on China and the West.
The Silk Road began in about 114 BCE. It was the fabled trade links between East Asia and the West.

Though silk was certainly the major trade item from China, many other goods were traded, and
religions, syncretic philosophies, and various technologies, as well as diseases, also travelled along the
Silk Road. In addition to economic trade, the Silk Road served as a means of carrying out cultural
trade among the civilizations along its network. The Silk Road became its own demise as well. As
luxury goods were exported from China throughout the world, the methods of production that had
been kept secret in China came out too. Europeans began to develop manufacturing technics to
emulate Chinese production. Europeans produced and manufactured the items only available from
China and no longer need to import from China. By the sixteenth century, the Silk Road was no longer
in use. In conclusion, the Silk Road connected the many cultures of the time. The Silk Road promoted
education and invention as all the various items imported and exported traveled throughout the world.
The development of the civilizations of the time grew and became more aware of the various political

With strong R D centers, the company designed a lessened sugar chocolate Truvia (Marketline, 2013),
which it sold intensively in retail chains of the USA, discussed in the next section of the report.
Cargill targets commodity markets in Asia, yet it prefers the Western markets for experimental and
marketing oriented commerce.
As a commodity company, Cargill targets resource markets, however its marketing activities tend to
concentrate in the West because in USA or Europe Cargill has a better foothold. Instead its commodity
and mass produced goods are spread in the rest of the world with an exception of Sri Lanka, where the
company holds a retail chain (Seas of Change, 2010).
Marketing activities in the West are more horizontally integrated: in a joint with Coca Cola, Cargill
devised sugar free sweetener for sugar conscious market in USA (Cargill,2013). Efficient work can be
seen behind Cargill s R D team which correctly identified American market accounting for nearly 80%
of reduced fats/sugars market (Confectionery,2011) .
Another value added products were cholesterol reduced milks and environmentally friendly foam

China Between The Republic Of China
After The Chinese Civil War ended in 1950, a separation of old China between the Republic of China
(ROC, commonly known as Taiwan ) and the People s Republic of China (PRC, commonly known as
China ) created legal and political dilemmas (Hsieh, 2016). They both declare the island of Taiwan is
an integral part of their territories. Until the 1990s, Taiwan was able to conquer her diplomatic
isolation by expanding the international trade and investment flows to all of her business partners
regardless of official government recognitions (Chow, 2016). The nation s per capita income rises
from $1,869 to $46,500 in nearly four decades since 1979, higher than that of the United Kingdom.
Taiwan is the world s twentieth largest exporter, having the relatively low underclass population (1.5
percent of the population). In 2016, her foreign exchange reserves are estimated to reach the world s
top five, at approximately 433.5 billion US Dollar (Waldron, 2016).
However, the rapid development of China s economy and her enormous market potentiality give the
Chinese government leverages to influence Taiwan s international relationships; in fact, Taiwan s
exports to China, Hong Kong, and Macau combine more than one third of her total exports, and
Beijing makes no secret of her intention to take advantage of this dependence (Subba, 2016). For
instance, instead of using Republic of China , Taiwan was forced to use the name of Chinese Taipei to
join the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation

A. S. Roma Research Paper
A.S. Roma was founded in 1927, by a merger of three smaller Roman clubs Fortitudo Pro Roma SGS,
Roman FC and SS Alba Audace. Out of all major Roman football clubs, only Lazio refused to be a
part of the new project; this proved to be the beginning of one of the fiercest inter city rivalries in the
world, the famous Derby della Capitale. Roma managed to make their mark on Italian football almost
immediately, winning their first Scudetto in 1942. The post war period saw them fall off the map a bit,
as the club consistently found itself in the bottom half of the league. As a culmination of their troubles,
Roma was relegated in 1951; however, they managed to return to the first division the following year
and remain there until today. The

Samson and the Pillars of our Faith Essay
The strongest man to walk the earth was now a symbol of fallen humanity. Once a pillar of power and
strength, he now stands weak and helpless. Once a pillar of wisdom and justice, he now stands as a
testimony of human ignorance and pride. Once a symbol of freedom, he now stands chained to his
failed passions. Once a symbolic pillar of humanity working with the divine, he now stands as an
example of the brokenness that results when we no longer put our faith and trust in God.
Samson was a pillar of God s grace and power as long as he remained fixed on God. The moment he
took his eyes off God, Satan was able to instigate his downfall.
According to Webster s Dictionary, a pillar is a firm upright support for a building or ... Show more

These pillars, that derive their meaning and strength in Jesus, characterize our dependence on the one
who sacrifice Himself on our behalf. Jesus not only gives meaning and significance to the pillars, He
is the essence and cornerstone of the pillars of our faith.
Ellen G. White states that, The cross of Christ is the central pillar on which hangs the far more
exceeding and eternal weight of glory. {Acts of the Apostle, p. 560}
We are strong, as individuals and as a church, only through His grace and as we continue in a faithful
relationship with our eyes fixed on Jesus.
It is important then that we embrace the pillars of principles and practice that God has given to His
Church and people.
Why is this important? Satan is attacking these pillars of our faith so he can weaken us and tear down
the church. He wants to destroy us.
Listen to Ellen G. White:
I have the message from God; he has sent me with great light, and there is a removing of the
landmarks, and an attempt to tear down the pillars of our faith, then a more decided effort is made to
exalt the false sabbath, and to cast contempt upon God himself by supplanting the day he has blessed
and sanctified. This false sabbath is to be enforced by an oppressive law. Satan and his angels are wide
awake and intensely active, working with energy and perseverance through human instrumentalities to
bring about his purpose of

The water was taken from the same source and the same thermometer was used, yet different values
were derived each time. This is a type of environmental factor, which is a random error as it affected
the values differently. This error causes the rate of collisions to decrease or increase based on the
change in temperature, which in turn causes the rate of reaction to decrease or increase too. The
change in temperature was also affecting the reaction rate, causing the results to fluctuate because of
an added factor. One way to mitigate the source of error is to take more data on the temperature to
average as one constant temperature. This would avoid any additional factors affecting the reaction
rate, and completely isolate the relationship between the surface area and reaction

Microsoft Packard Faces Intense Competition Essay

Hewlett Packard faces intense competition in all its business segments in terms of price, quality,
brand, technology, reputation, distribution, range of products etc. The company faces stiff competition
in the PC market. The company has become the market leader in the PC segment in the third and
fourth quarter of 2006, relegating Dell to the second position. With Michael Dell returning as Chief
Executive Officer, Dell is likely to come back strongly and make a fierce bid for market leadership.
Other significant competitors in the PC market include Acer, Apple Computer, Gateway, Lenovo
Group and Toshiba Corporation. Moreover, Acer s acquisition of Gateways has made it the third
largest PCs supplier in the world. In some regions, the company faces competition from local
companies and from generically branded or white box manufacturers. The company s competitors in
enterprise servers and storage include broad solutions providers such as IBM, focused competitors
such as EMC Corporation in storage, Dell in industry standard servers and Sun Microsystems in
UNIX based servers. The imaging and printing group s key competitors include Canon USA, Lexmark
International, Xerox Corporation, Seiko Epson Corporation, Samsung Electronics and Dell. Hewlett

  • 2. Mass V. Mary s Catholic Church The religious institution that I observed is affiliated with Christianity. Catholics worship is called Mass and that is what I observed and reflected about. As many of my friends are Catholic, I thought it would be interesting to go and experience a Catholic Mass, and watch what all happens during one. Given the opportunity to go to St. Mary s Catholic church in my hometown with my friend s family, and experience the Mass first hand. As I stepped into the church, I already felt a warm, welcoming feeling. A couple of the members of the church were at the door to greet one another to point us in the direction of where the worship would take place. From there, I had to dip my hands in the holy water and make a cross over my, which was blessed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From listening to the daily readings and reflecting on them with psalms and hymns, I could see a focused approach to the word. All the readings motivated us to see and face all the challenges that were in the real world today. The gospel and sermon spoke by the priest were, even more of a celebration of the word and to proclaim our faith outside the church. Following the time of listening and reflecting on the readings of the day, I noticed that it was then time to reflect and act upon faith. Worshippers would bring up offerings and gifts that would be blessed and accepted by Jesus. I think the public display of communion with all the worshipers was evident when everyone went up to the altar to receive the bread, which is similar my church. I think that the second part of Mass showed the actions of faith that were taken after celebrating the word of God. Overall, the service was pleasing and enjoyable to observe. The visit made me see and understand the Mass and the symbolism that the church itself has. I enjoyed the first part of listening to the word and having the priest apply the sermon and readings directly into our lives today and then the second part, seeing everyone participate in gathering gifts and communion, showing their faith and proclaiming it. I found the choir to be interesting that they do most of the singing with sometimes everyone singing but overall it was a good ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the short term, this would be a good trend, but if it continues, it could be a sign that Sample Company is not keeping a big investment in assets, because not that as the denominator in this ROI calculation, a low asset figure can be used to help drive up the overall result. Meaning that if this trend continues, it may be an indication of increased operations rather than improvement in asset efficiency. Stock Performance The common stock value increased 54.8%, from $42/share to $65/share, between 2000 and 2001. This is an indicate that the market likes what it sees in the performance and the management of Sample Company. In addition, it paid 1.2% in dividends for the past two years. Another key indicator, the Price to Earnings Ratio, fell from 12.0 to 10.7. This is not enough to be alarming. In fact, some investors, myself included, feel that lower Price to Earnings Ratios are not necessarily a good thing. The reason being that if a company is struggling to pay out large earnings per share, to make the denominator in the P/E equation large enough to keep the P/E ratio low, then often such financial pressures can take the attention of the management away from the company s operations and other important issues, like surviving as a going concern in a tough business climate. Activity of Sample Company The activity ratios measure the company s management of asset levels and sales (Marshall, 2002). Between 2000 and 2001, Sample Company ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Rhetorical Analysis Of Amiri Baraka s Amiri For The... Reading through The Dutchman for the first time, I had the impression that it was just another story of a black man being oppressed by another white person in the mid 20th century. However, upon closer inspection, I have found that this play dives much deeper into a variety of different aspects. For example, if we are reading this play with the knowledge that this is written in a postmodern era, this gives us the freedom to explore which social constructs are being torn down within the play itself. This play and the author, Amiri Baraka, are sending powerful messages through the text that can clearly be identified using the lens of postmodernism. He uses the characters in this play to depict different themes. For example, Clay is the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In reality, Lula was simply generalizing a whole race of people and it happened to connect with Clay. Lula [Strangely irritated] Don t get smart with me, Buster. I know you like the palm of my hand. (Baraka 4). Lula s actions and thoughts could be Baraka s way of stating that he feels over generalized in his modern day society. Lula is the perfect example of someone attempting to gain power and dominance over another individual while giving the perception of her being under the control of another person. Lula is constantly luring Clay towards her, then proceeds to insult him. She then acted like it was simply a joke among old friends. For example, in the beginning of the play, while Clay and Lula are still chatting on the train, she makes a remark about his suit and who used to wear it. LULA... Boy, those narrow shoulder clothes come from a tradition you ought to feel oppressed by. A three button suit. What right do you have to be wearing a three button suit and a striped tie? (Baraka 5). On top of that, she continues to remind Clay that his grandfather was a slave and that Clay is not white, in fact, the opposite of white; black. • 6. The Economic Impacts Of Gmo s And Large Agribusiness Sam Palmisano Mrs. Kristine Frailing AP Capstone Seminar 24 January 2015 The Economic Impacts of GMO s and Large Agribusiness When focusing on a major topic like genetically modified organisms from an economic standpoint, it is crucial to cover the varying effects of large agribusiness companies that run the biotechnological field, primarily Monsanto. Monsanto, originally founded as a chemical company, has risen to hold a biotechnical science monopoly. While a monopoly is never a good thing, the issues with Monsanto are much larger than that. How exactly do Monsanto and its fellow biotechnology companies cause damage to everything they interfere with? From the death, destruction, and deformation of Vietnam to financial damage to local farmers, from the dangerous chemicals placed in their crops to the false advertising of their company, Monsanto and its cohorts may be the root of all problems and negative aspects related to genetically modified organisms. Monsanto and many other large agribusiness companies claim to be solving world hunger. This is a false advertisement. Only about 20% of global food production comes from large factory farms, while the other 80% comes from from small, local farms (Scott Cooney, The Inspired Economist). Many important crops are not even fully dedicated to feeding anyone, they go to making other products. For example only 2% of GMO soy is actually eaten by people and only 10% of GMO corn goes towards foods, with half of that being in high ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Mmwr Hepatitis B MMWR Paper on Hepatitis B Microbiology 212 A April 27, 2012 Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a DNA virus that affects the liver and belongs to the Hepadnaviridae group (Takkenberg, Weegink, Zaaijer, amp; Reesink, 2010). According to an article in Vox Sanguines, an international journal of transfusion medicine, (Takkenberg, Weegink, Zaaijer, amp; Reesink, 2010) about 400 million people worldwide are chronically infected with HBV, and 2 billion people have serological evidence of past or present HBV infection . Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Looking at the data provided by CDC (Department of Health and Human Services, 2011) during 2010 2011 there is an average incidence of HBV of 8 (per 10 million people) in 2010 and 6 (per 10 million people) in 2011 (appendix C). This decrease of 2 (per 10 million people) from 2010 2011 may just be a coincidence and further analysis of data over a larger period of time would be needed. The decrease of 2 persons may not seem like a lot; however with continued education, vaccination, and awareness of prevention, this could indeed signify a downward trend of acute HBV. The trend of occurrence over the course of each year, 2010 and 2011, shows a steady increase without any major spike or deviations (appendix A amp; B). With the transmission of HBV being mainly from drug use and exchange of fluids between infected individuals (sexually), there is no factor that should cause a spike. Continuing preventative measures will promote lowering the incidence of occurrence, however until a cure is found HBV will still register a minimal number of cases a year. References Adams, M. This section will analyze Competition Bikes Incorporated s (CBI) percentage changes from years 6 to 7 and then 7 to 8. The report will include an analysis of CBI s comparative income statement and balance sheet. Between years 6 and 7 CBI s Net Sales increased by 33.3% for a change of $1,495,000. This is a weakness for CBI because it could indicate that they are not collecting from their buyers in efficient or timely manner. When a company has large amounts of funds that are uncollected they do not have the cash on hand to purchase raw materials and pay expenses, which can negatively impact its ability to turn a profit. This will be examined further when the average collection period is analyzed later in this report. Between years 6 and 7 CBI s Total Assets have increased by 2.2% for a change of $93,741. This shows strength in CBI because by increasing their assets they also increase their value. This can help instill confidence in current as well as potential shareholders. Between years 6 and 7 CBI s Accounts Payable and Notes Payable increased by 192% for a change of $128,820. This indicates a weakness as the company has more than doubled their debts between these two years. Significantly increasing debt can impact shareholder confidence, which could impact the market value of CBI stock. Between years 6 and 7 CBI s Long Term Liabilities decreased by 5.6% for a change of negative ($105,000). This indicates strength for CBI as it demonstrates that the company as allocated monies to pay down their long term debt further reducing their liabilities. Tenant Landlord Law [pic] The Benefits and Risks of Being A Landlord Reality Check √ Landlord and Tenant Law PA303 Unit 1 Written Assignment February 7, 2012 What Are The Rewards of Becoming A Landlord? Owning rental property offers many financial and lifestyle benefits. The number one reward and benefit of being a landlord and having rental property is you own the property. As long as you are not breaking the law in the process, it is yours to live in, enjoy, freely and rent to whomever you chose as long as you follow the law and do it legally. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most first time landlords still have full time jobs and may find it difficult to handle both. Even though being a landlord does not have to be a full time job, depending on your resources, it will take more than a few hours a week to do the job. Most landlords need to be reachable and available 24 hours a day, to attend to or answer some form of emergent problem or non emergent problem from their tenants (i.e. a pipe burst, the lights went out or a loud and unruly neighbor/tenant). This brings you, the potential land, to the problems with tenants. Problem tenants can be one of the unfortunate problems and facts of owning rental property. There will always be a possibility that a landlord will get the tenant from Hell , someone who either doesn t pay the rent or doesn t pay rent on time, who destroys the property or who call and bugs the landlord continuously for just about anything. A proper background check or screening process will help eliminate some problematic tenants. However, a properly executed lease or rental agreement will probably help deal with most annoying tenants. There may be times when the landlord experiences problems with leasing their apartments, such as in a recession, a soft market or a modest/bad economy which can and does not exclude the best of real estate investors/landlords. In 31 BCE, Augustus became the supreme commander of the Roman Republic. During the Augustan Revolution, art and architecture pushed a political agenda. Art portraying Augustus remains common throughout his reign. The art and architecture helped reinforce Augustus political message that he was the restorer of Rome. An example of Augustus artistic propaganda is the statue Augustus of Primaporta from 20 BCE. The statue is a depiction of Augustus as commander of the army. Augustus is depicted as very youthful and perfect. The statue is very idealized but does include some of Augustus true features. Augustus of Primaporta is not only a portrait but illustrates Augustus military victories and connection to the gods. A political party platform is a formal set of principal goals which are supported by a political party or individual candidate. Typically, platforms of candidates within their parties are consistent. This is partially because of voter s tendency to vote with their party, and partially because of expectations of candidates. Three political parties in America are Republicans, Democrats, and the Green party. Tax reform, environmental issues, welfare and poverty, and immigration are all issues that different parties view from different angles. The Green party advocates strongly for environmental issues, as made clear by their name. This party believes that: the Human species has no right to exploit animals, sustainable society lives within planet s resource limits, and we should safely dispose of all waste we create. • 14. Crime And Punishment And The Punishment In every country, a crime committed has a punishment that goes hand in hand with it. The nature of the crime determines the punishment that follows it. The nature of the punishment also depends on the law that operates in the country in which the crime is committed. Different crimes attract different penalties. For instance, crimes involving murder may attract capital punishment on the criminal, or life jail sentence depending on the circumstances surrounding the murder. Capital offences do attract capital punishments as well, and again it depends on what the supreme law of the land stipulates. In light of this short analysis, this essay will analyse a case that involved a murderer, and the punishment that followed him upon confirmation of the crime he committed. It will also compare the punishment given to the murderer with the punishments available in other countries of the European continent. Crime and Punishment was written during the time when Marxism was beginning to flourish within Tsarist ruled Russia. Dostoyevsky, when writing Crime and Punishment espoused a desire to counteract Russian Nihilism and in the novel pointed out the dangers of utilitarianism juxtaposing it as a reason, which in his view fueled radical sentiments upon the populace. In this light, it is important to take into consideration the reasoning behind the acts of murder committed by the main character Roskalnikov within the context of Dostoyevsky s rejection of Marxist views. Hector is willing to fight and will not go down without putting up a fight for his home. The falcon screams, swoops, and plunges in its lust for prey, so Achilles swooped and Hector trembled in the shadow of Troy s wall. (156 167). This simile is about the chase between Hector and Achilles. Homer uses this simile brilliantly whereas he compares Achilles the great warrior to the ruthless bird, falcon, which will get its prey. Homer compares this chase to a predator prey situation, just like a falcon and a dove, eventually, the predator will catch up to its prey and attack. Just like Achilles will eventually do when he catches his prey, Hector. Zeus debates whether he should save Hector or not but the goddess Athena persuades Zeus to let be because Hector s time has come. Achilles knows the weak points of the armor that Hector is armed with and thrusts his spear through Hector s throat. While Hector is nearing his death, he pleads with Achilles so that his body can be sent back to the Trojans for a proper burial. Just like how the falcon leaves its prey after devouring what it wants, the falcon leaves the body left to rot, as what Achilles did with Hector where he let the dogs and birds maul at the dead body. • 16. The Tragedy Of Hamlet In The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark by William Shakespeare, many scholars are known to debate the controversial topics that are present within the play. This includes whether or not Hamlet is pretending to be mad, if an Oedipus complex is present within the play, and if it is the reason for his delay to action. In Hamlet there is evidence that Hamlet is only feigning madness and in reality identifies with Claudius, thereby delaying Claudius death. This is largely in part due to the Oedipus complex that is present within Hamlet. In Hamlet it is debated whether or not Hamlet s madness in the play is real. However, the evidence points to the idea that Hamlet is only pretending to be mad. When Hamlet tells Horatio As I perchance hereafter ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ultimately, the reason for the delay to action in Hamlet is left ambiguous but, one such credible explanation is that the delay is due to the Oedipus complex. Hamlet sees his own sexual desires manifested in Claudius so therefore he is unable to take action and kill the man he identifies with. Sigmund Freud states that, Hamlet is able to do anything except take vengeance on the man who did away with his father and took that father s place with his mother, the man who shows him the repressed wishes of his own childhood realized (41). Hamlet is unable to punish Claudius for killing his father because Hamlet realizes that he himself is literally no better than the sinner whom he is to punish (Freud 41). This idea is confirmed in the last moments of the play when Hamlet s mother dies. Hamlet throughout the play struggles to kill Claudius because he represents Hamlet s childhood wishes, however, only after Gertrude dies is Hamlet s childhood wishes killed along with her. Hamlet is finally able to kill Claudius because Gertrude has now died. Because Gertrude is the object of Hamlet s desire, and she has now died, Hamlet s desire for his mother has also died (Schaeffer). • 17. Jesus Seminar Critique One critique to the Jesus Seminar was the motives behind their work. The media often portrayed the group to be comprised mostly of former Christians, attacking hardest on the group s leader Robert Funk and cochair John Crossan. Critics went as far to describe their meetings as having the air of a village atheists convention (Powell, 110). Such an allegation gave rise to the popular belief that the motives of the scholars were to get revenge on institutionalized religion for not being accepting to them. The most rebutted aspect of the work done by the scholars was their idiosyncrasy to equate unverifiable with unauthentic. Most scholars who study the elements attribute to the life of Jesus stand on common ground when it comes to the realization that many of the sayings and deeds associated to Jesus in the Gospels lack sufficient evidence to establish authenticity. However, to many scholars insufficient evidence means an element cannot be verified, and therefore should not be deemed as historical. In contrast, the Jesus Seminar went beyond this scope and maintained that Jesus did not say or did not do things that cannot be authenticated by evidence. For example, it is widely accepted that there is very little evidence to support whether or not Jesus was born from his virgin mother, Mary. As a result, this element of his life has just been something that one would believe on the foundation of religious faith rather than historical science. However, the Jesus Seminar applied a post Enlightenment historical scientific view to this element in order to determine authenticity. Under this assessment, they determined not only what is confirmable but what also is scientifically possible. Therefore, the scholars deemed the virgin birth as non historical, concluding that Jesus had been conceived through normal sexual intercourse between a male and female because it fit the paradigm known today. This stance held by the Jesus Seminar turn[s] a corner in the traditional understanding of the relationship that faith and philosophy bear to science and history (Powell, 115). For this reason, I reject the integrity of their work. I believe faith and philosophy should be kept separate of science and history, unless the two aim to support one another. Rescinding concepts of faith simply because they do fall within current scientific boundaries is illegitimate. The major flaw of the Jesus Seminar is their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 18. `` Pride `` By John Aquinas When one hears the word pride , one would rarely imagine a modest person who devotes their time to volunteer work and philanthropy. Typically, one would picture an arrogant politician or a movie star, a person so self absorbed that they almost entirely ignore the needs of those around them. However, even the humblest acts of virtue can arise from pride as well. The story of Icarus, the boy who became entranced with his own pride and flew too close to the sun, is told time and time again; however, there is another story of pride one hears less often, the person who takes pride in their own humility. Rather than take pride in typical attributes such as wealth, prestige, or even appearance, these people take pride in their modesty and virtue. In this way, pride comes from an unexpected source and is difficult to avoid since it takes occasion even from good deeds (Aquinas 7). While the other six deadly sins present both helpful and harmful characteristics of the sin, pride is complex in corrupting even the most well intentioned actions. At first, it would seem that humility would be the opposite of pride since it is defined as, having a lowly opinion of oneself ( Humility ). However, there are also occasions in which a person corrupts the virtue by using it to enhance their image and view it as an example of their own excellence. For example, although most of those volunteering at the soup kitchen want to improve their community or provide to those less fortunate, there ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Aristotle And Jesus Relationship Essay If you were to ask Jesus Christ whether he has friends, he would most likely say of course I do, I am certainly friends with all of God s children. However, after reading Aristotle, the question becomes, If Jesus has friends, of which sort are they? . Aristotle defines friendship as, Any association of people who spend time and do things together, share in pains and pleasure, and wish for each other s good, (Nicomachean Ethics 1166a 1 10). Addressing each aspect of this definition, with the twelve disciples in mind, the reader concludes that they certainly spend time together, share in pains and pleasure, but the sticking point is whether they wish for each other s good. The answer to that question determines if in fact Jesus has friends what sort they are. There is a multitude of evidence presented in the Gospel of Mark that seems to indicate that Jesus is incapable of having friends. First, it is nearly impossible to consider the relationship between Jesus and the people he heals as friendship. Furthermore, the people that he heals often ignore his directives and, after healing somebody Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it, (Mark 7 36). It is difficult for a friendship to exist between a doctor and patient, the difficulties would be further compounded if the doctor gave the patient directions which were brazenly ignored. More often in cases of domestic violence women are the victims of men. This situation can occur to anyone at any age and anywhere. When officers of the peace answer a call they never can assure that they will end up alive at the end. They can only assume the worst hope for the best and to win. Some theorists speculate that people used Stonehenge to hang criminals, hence the name. We will never know precisely how the name was formed. (fortunecity) How was Stonehenge built: Stonehenge was built during three distinct periods. Each took centuries to built, its unknown why each stage ended abruptly Period I is believed that the stone age builders began in approximately 3100 BC and ended in about 2300 BC. Neolithic workers set out to create a nearly perfect circle out of soil and chalk using only stone tools and animal bones. They most likely pounded a wooden stake into the ground at the point that was to be the center of the circle, attach along rope to it, and marked the circular path of the ropes unattached end. Workers, using pickaxes made from red deer antler and shovels made from the shoulder blades of oxen, then dug deep pits into the chalky earth all the way around the circle. Most of the pits were then connected, forming a fairly continuous ditch running the circumference of the circle and earthen embankment of the displaced soil. They left a wide opening on the north east side for the main entrance into the circle, and a small gap on the southeast side may have been left there to form a smaller, alternate entrance (Wendy Mass 36) There were 56 evenly spaces holes around its perimeter. And at the entrance there were a pair of stones. (fortunecity 1) Period II began in about 2150 BC. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One important historical event that took place is the flood, which occurs in both the Epic of Gilgamesh and the Book of Genesis in the Old Testament. The Epic of Gilgamesh and the Book of Genesis in the Old Testament share a great amount of similarities. In both books, there are Gods who possess almighty powers on earth. However, this class was linked to year eleven, comprising of 16 and 17 year olds. This gave rise to considerable discussion, as the group believed that the ideal time to learn values is more appropriate during adolescence, such as years seven or eight. After a considerable reflection it was deduced that to a degree it is true that in partying knowledge and values upon younger students is both more effective and easier, as at this age they are more impressionable and accepting of new ideals. However, learning is not a an end product and the intent of the lesson was more about nurturing the ideas that the students have already subconsciously gained, whilst aiming to foster and enhance these values, in order for them to emerge consciously enriched. The teachings of Sankey and Kim (2013) under the umbrella of the Dynamic System Theory greatly influenced these decisions, were they stress a non linear and highly variable process of development, and thus, signifying an older age group does not quantify the need to disenfranchise themselves from moral development. They both declare the island of Taiwan is an integral part of their territories.
