Great Afterlife Debate
In the Great Afterlife debate, Michael Shermer and Deepak Chopra embody two different opinions
concerning the existence of afterlife. Shermer points out that the concepts of afterlife and near death
experiences are illusion of the brain. Chopra disproves that afterlife is a concept from the scientific
perspective in the course of refuting the arguments of Shermer. In what follows, this essay is an
agnostic point of view for support neither of the arguers.... (THESIS......)
There are two separate parts of the debate in respect of the issue of afterlife. In the first place, Michael
Shermer argues that afterlife is not real on the basis of six main evidences from Deepak Chopra s
book, Life After Death: Burden of Proof. He considers that the belief of Chopra is almost entirely
based on faith, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Shermer claims that the idea of afterlife or paradise are shaped and reshaped by the human mind to
refute the arguments forwarded by Chopra. By using the report about out of body experiences,
Shermer points out that it is impossible to have a world after death or any out of the body paradise. To
strengthen his argument, Shermer restates the argument that there is no afterlife since [paradise] is in
our thoughts and in our actions. It is in our lives and in our loves. It is in our families and in our
friends. It is in our communities and in our world. It is in the courage of our convictions and in the
character of our souls (The Great Afterlife, p15). On the other hand, Deepak Chopra refutes the
arguments made by Shermer and afterlife is about consciousness in the second place. He argues that
afterlife is not from imaginations and it is a state of awareness by citing the modern near death
experiences are of concrete nature. From the scientific and metaphysical perspectives, Chopra claims
that Hamlet was right to call death an undiscovered country, not because the living cannot reach it but
because heaven s geography keeps shifting (The

Feminist Criticism Of Women In Frankenstein
In Which a Feminist Killjoy Ruins Frankenstein for Sexists
Mary Shelley s Frankenstein does not seem like a novel that empowers women. Based on the doormat
esque female characters and entitled male protagonist, one might easily assume that Frankenstein is a
typical male penned, patriarchy saturated 19th century work. However, when examined with feminist
ideals in mind, Shelley s novel actually makes a progressive argument about the role of women.
Though the female characters are certainly lacking in both number and substance, this absence hinders
Victor and his goals and does not merely assert that women are useless. In addition, the role of
maternity and maternal figures amplifies the meaning of Frankenstein; the creation and caring for of
life manifests as an immensely important process with both benefits and consequences, not as merely
women s work . Through an analysis of the existing female characters and the lack thereof, as well as
by understanding the maternal figures present and how they further the novel, one can see how
Shelley s Frankenstein reveals that feminine roles are necessary for a functional society.
None of Shelley s female characters in Frankenstein are feminist icons; the women of the novel are
written as passive, defined entirely by the men in their lives. This understanding, which informs
Stephanie Haddad s article Women as the Submissive Sex in Mary Shelley s Frankenstein , is partially
achieved through point of view, specifically that of

Architectural Styles Of The Ottoman Empire
Distinguishable characteristics like the form, method of construction, regional features, and the
materials used to make a building or any other construction, which helps in identifying that structure
amongst others are what comprise an architectural style. Architectural styles have a vast diversity as
they represent changes in beliefs, religion, fashion, and the invention of new technology over a broad
time period. Over the ages, different empires would rule over a region with each ruler of those empires
having their own unique perspective on their religion. Subsequently, when new empires would come
in power, they would then take inspiration from the previous empire s architecture and add or remove
characteristics from the architecture based on their personal religious perspectives.
In the same way, the Ottoman empire was influenced by styles of architecture from the preceding
empires, namely the Byzantine, Iranian, and Islamic architectural styles. As a result, the Ottoman
empire s architectural style has resemblances with the Romanesque architecture, which is a blend of
the ancient Roman and Byzantine architectures. And it also has similarities with the Gothic
architecture which was heavily influenced by the Romanesque architecture and subsequently by the
Renaissance architecture. However, all three of these architectural styles also have their differences
due to individual religious perspectives.
The Byzantine architecture made with architectural traditions of the

Home Inequalities In Public Schools
When the Home Hurts the Schooled: The Inequalities in Public School Education
The education system in America is stained by racial and structural inequalities that cause those in
lower income areas to not receive the necessary resources that enable a student to thrive. These
benefits are as simple as certified teachers (Turner), maintained classrooms, and even accredited
school districts. The common denominator in the lack of basic expectations is the type of funding
public schools receive. The federal government gives about 10 percent of the money schools have to
spend (Turner), while the state and mainly local dollars have to provide the rest. When the majority of
a school s funding is produced using the local region s property taxes, ... Show more content on

In 1926, U.S Supreme Court decision, Corrigan v. Buckley, validated the use of restrictive covenants,
a legally enforceable contract imposed in a deed upon the buyer of property ( 1920s 1948: Racially
Restrictive Covenants ). These covenants were typically used to permit the denial of ownership to a
black family. Covenants, neighborhood groups, and other types of legislative or physical interference,
froze efforts to integrate, forcing black families to live in inadequate housing conditions at absurdly
high prices.
After racially restrictive covenants and Federal Housing Administration practices were deemed racist
and immoral, the damage was already done. Black families living in previously marked red zones
could not afford to move out of their segregated and underdeveloped neighborhoods. The public
schools in these districts suffered as well because of the decreasing values of the properties and the
high concentration of low income residents. Necessary educational resources in these areas dwindle
and, as a result, academic score gaps widen, the dropout rate increases and children fail to find reasons

Network Server Security
Network Server Security
The network server at focus in this study is one utilized primarily for data storage and internal
application sharing as well as for securing numerous desktop computers connected to the network.
This work will describe access control that would be put in place for each of these with explanations
on why these would be used. A message of at least 20 characters will be generated using a Vigener
cipher keys that is at least three letters long, The message will be encrypted along with an explanation
of how secure this message is and why. The form of security chose for the network will be identified
with physical and electronic security considered. Included will be virus checks, firewalls, and
encryption protocols as well as any access protocols explaining how each secures the network. This
work will additionally list three specific project goals which if met would reduce or alleviate any
problems or deficiencies.
I. Database Access for Data Storage and Internal Application Sharing and Desktop Computers
Security controls for the network system involves the creation of access and use for each user or user
group. The control is used to restrict a list of possible actions down to the allowed actions. For
example, encryption can be used to restrict access to data, application controls to restrict processing
via authentication, and DRM storage to prevent unauthorized accesses. (Securosis, 2012) The
necessary controls are determined by first listing out

Antitrust And The American Consumer
Antitrust and the American Consumer
Kent L. Himes
College of Western Idaho
Abstract
The predominant view in the United States is that The Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890 was passed with
the intent to protect consumers from inefficient market forms, and predation by large corporations.
The specific provisions of the Sherman Act, as well as the later Clayton Act of 1914, prohibit acts that
are considered to be anti competitive such as cartels, monopolies, price discrimination, and predatory
pricing. Mergers and acquisitions are also individually reviewed to ensure they won t have an anti
competitive effect on the market. We will look at each of these acts to try to determine their actual
impact to the consumer. We will also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(DOJ 1997) Note that price fixing doesn t necessarily need to result in increased prices.
Price fixing scenarios require two main ingredients to be effective for the companies that attempt
them. First, the demand curve for the product or service in question must be sufficiently inelastic such
that a decrease in production will raise the price enough to ensure a higher profit level. The second
requirement for price fixing is that participating companies must combine for an effective monopoly
of the market in question. If two relatively minor companies decide to raise their prices together, this
will only result in the rest of the market taking additional share, and the conspirators losing money.
In a free market economy, price fixing agreements face two large challenges to their effectiveness. The
first is that while the companies participating in a price fixing agreement will benefit as a whole from
adhering to the agreement, each individual company has a very strong incentive to cheat on the
agreement and charge a market rate. Lowering prices allows the company to pick up additional market
share from their competitors and increase profits for themselves above what they would be entitled to
under the agreement. The second difficulty arises from the fact that without very high barriers to
market entry, the higher prices being charged

Standards For Financial Decision Making
Abstract. The article reviewed was Standards for Financial Decision Making: Legal, Ethical, and
Practical Issues. The key of the abstract is to emphasize the existence of standards and statutory
mechanisms for financial decision making. The article is based on standards of the National
Guardianship Association (NGA) (p. 1275).
Introduction. The authors study the meaning of term standard . Some dictionaries determine the term
standard as a model of acceptance, others as a measuring criterion. If entities do not operate under the
established standards, they face with sanctions for ethical violations and professional negligence. The
authors analyzes principles and guidance of NGA standards, and frequent mistakes when making
financial decisions. The main objective of the study is to analyze conflicting issues of financial
decision making, guardianship problems, and adoption of NGA standards (pp. 1275 1276). The study
is important because it demonstrates practical approaches of applying standards to the common
financial decisions. The authors consider two problems: the impact of fiduciary duties on decision
making standards, and the acceptance of model behavior by guardians of business.
Literature Review. The authors use a systematic review of literature in the research. The literature
review is categorized into three parts: general principles of decision making, the role of guardian and
conservator in decision making, the relationships between fiduciary duties and

An Insight For Women s Struggle For Equality
An Insight to Women s Struggle for Equality: Good Country People
In her short film, Good Country People , at PBS.org; Global Voices, Tanya Hamilton addresses the
gender based bias toward women in the workplace. Hamilton uses the setting of her native born home
in St. Catharine s Parish, Spanish Town, Jamaica ( The Reel Deal ) to tell the story of a young woman,
Blossom Edwards, forced to take over her uncle s taxi business as the sole income for the family.
Edwards encounters much adversity in simply trying to make a day s wage for the family. She is
treated disrespectfully, passed over for business and placed in danger on top of doing the task of taxi

The main character, Blossom Edwards, is a young woman doing a traditionally man s job. Edwards
has to take over her uncle s taxi business to make ends meet for the family or they will do without the
basics necessities. Another instance of desperation Hamilton uses is of a young boy trying to get a taxi
ride on several occasions. We find he has to get home to take care of younger siblings and, if need be,
will walk many miles to do so. The body language of characters also creates a sense of pathos
throughout the piece. You can feel the discouragement, fear, desperation and happiness without a
single word from the characters. Danger is another effective tool this filmmaker puts in place for her
audience to create pathos. This is done with a news bulletin on the radio about shootings, an attack on
Edwards husband for wearing the wrong color shirt, and an intense scene involving a roadblock by
gunmen. But Hamilton gives us hope too. Edwards finally gives the young boy a ride despite the
danger that may be involved in doing so. She also pays the gunmen at the roadblock to let her pass
with the boy in her taxi rather than leaving him to an uncertain fate at their hands. And when the
election, the cause of all the tension, is over luminaires are sent up to signal a new beginning. Keeping
in mind, all the while this is all in a day s work for a young woman trying to feed her family.

The average workers in Ukraine are most likely in the labor market in agriculture, pharmaceutics,
FMCG, and industries such as chemicals and more. The unemployment rate in Ukraine is 8%, which
has increased, compared to the last couple of years. Their working conditions are very similar to the
United States. Holidays for them are 24 calendar days of annual vacation plus addition vacation days
and the payroll taxes start at 36.7% to 49.7%. Ukraine payroll payouts twice every month and the
minimum salary is strictly regulated by the government. Employee benefits are insurance, car, fitness,

the lack of medical facilities and medicines. Healthcare is supposedly free and all employed citizens

The Industrial Revolution was a time of great age throughout the world. It represented major change
from 1760 to the period 1820 1840. The movement originated in Great Britain and affected everything
from industrial manufacturing processes to the daily life of the average citizen. I will discuss the
Industrial Revolution and the effects it had on the world as a whole.
The primary industry of the time was the textiles industry. It had the most employees, output value,
and invested capital. It was the first to take on new modern production methods. The transition to
machine power drastically increased productivity and efficiency. This extended to iron production and
chemical production.
It started in Great Britain and soon expanded into Western

Post Cold War Dbq Essay
Following WWII and during the Cold War, there was a sense of instability in Europe. To counteract
this, many nations believed that a united Europe could suppress the intense nationalism and militarism
that lead to both world wars. Other nations reacted with advocacy, protest or were simply equivocal.
Post WWII Europe was extremely chaotic and disjointed. Alliances had been made and broken during
the world wars, so tensions were at an all time high throughout the continent. Germany was split into
zones of occupation and the Cold War was brewing. For these reasons and many more, certain
officials wanted to create a better sense of unity in Europe. In 1957, with the Treaty of Rome, the
European Economic Committee (EEC) was formed. Officials ... Show more content on

Britain in the years after 1950 was especially concerned at what joining the EEC would bring. The
British finance minister Harold Macmillan worried that by joining they would damage their internal
commerce system even if they were gaining new outside trading opportunities (Document 7). As
finance minister, he was likely thinking purely money and not acknowledging the other factors
associated with unification. The EEC did not seem to be the perfect fit but staying out of it would put
out the impression of isolation. Britain wanted a way of associating with this initiative in Europe in
such a way as to benefit us all . Those in Britain did not appear to make a concrete decision; over 30
years after Macmillan issued his statement Margaret Thatcher voiced a similar opinion. In 1988,
England had joined the EEC 15 years earlier but there were still topics of unanimity England was
unsure about. In this case, Thatcher was concerned that the Single European Act which seeked a single
currency and market would take away the uniqueness of each individual country. Thatcher believed
that Europe would benefit from being more united and with a greater sense of common purpose, but it
must be in a way which preserves the different traditions, parliamentary powers, and a sense of pride

In the book The Jungle by Upton Sinclair; this was first published by Fine Creative Media Inc. in 1906
(edition I read was published in 2003) it discuses life as an immigrant and how immigrants foresaw
the American dream and how they tired to achieve it. There where many themes for the book. The
theme that I took was most important was that life on the other side is not always better then what one
has. This theme can be shown many different ways throughout the book. It is shown through the plot
and through many examples of event that occurred though the book. In The Jungle a young man

some time of being in and out of jail Jurgis finally gets a job working at a hotel. He will become back
in touch with his family that he left and begin to support them on what he makes by working at the
hotel. As I read the book I felt more and more sorry for Jurgis and his family. The struggles and
hardships that they went though as well as what other immigrants where going through at the time. I
feel that people during this time where treated very unfairly and when it came to the meat packing
companies I think that the cows pigs had a better life. This is because the animals where fed every day
no matter what because the people that wanted to sell them needed for them to look like that had a lot
of meat on them not just skin and bone. The pay that the people working in these plants made did not
always pay for the rent of their one rat infested room, let alone to put food on the table. Some of the

RUNNING HEAD: ARGUMENTATION AND COLLABORATION
The purpose of this paper is to identify key issues based on lectures and readings done from this past
week. From the readings, the main focus for the week dealt with Argumentation and Collaboration. If
in any situation, how would the argument be constructed and supported, how to explain the way
perception will affect decision making, and lastly explain the importance of having clear
communication in business.

Communication
The vitality of communication is very important. Robbins and Judge (2007) tells us that an idea, no
matter how great, is useless until it is transmitted and understood by others according to chapter 11
(Organizational Behavior). Without the function of communication, it is impossible for anything to go
on; nothing will exist. In order for communication to take place, it must be a phase of transmission of
meaning from one person to another and the meaning must be understood.
The most useful concept or idea is communication. Communication is what makes things or break
things. The effectiveness of how the well the communication is will determine the outcome of any
situation. Anyone can communicate, but as stated before, there must be transmission and meaning.
Realistically, all of the concepts and issues relate to the organization. Everyday, argumentation is
performed. Why do you feel this is adequate for the company? Not only argumentation, but decisions
are made throughout the entirety of the day. Have the decisions been thought out? Will this solve the
problem or make a difference? Lastly, there is communication. Communication will determine to what
extent the work will get completed, and how well information was perceived. All of these aspects are
essential in an organization and helps make the organization better place.

A Brief Note On The Intersection Of Technology And Terrorism
Final Paper Sean Kosma ADMJ 1220 Dec. 5, 2014 Cyberterrorism: the intersection of technology and
terrorism The cyber world around us is an evolving organic entity. The incredible advancements with
technology and the interconnectivity between such systems make everyday life for the average
American as easy as swiping a finger. From a person s smartphone used to pass the time by mindlessly
playing games to the United States federal computer networks filled with incredibly confidential
databases and mainframes, the wide range of differing types of technology and networks is utilized for
an even larger spectrum of capabilities, depending on who is operating. With a world that is becoming
much more dependent on these networks running smoothly and efficiently as possible, these networks
are becoming prime targets for individuals or organizations that may have other, more malicious ideas
of how to utilize the true capabilities of these networks. Present day has seen its fair share of networks
that have been compromised by unauthorized actors, but the real question that arises with this looming
theory of cyberterrorism is what the actors desired endstate is. When a network is hacked and
compromised, how the act is categorized is all dependent on the identity of those guilty, the intended
targets, the desired outcome, and the overarching desired outcome the actors wished would come to
fruition. All these components have led to the classification of cybercrimes, cyberterrorism,

Tiny Compton, in response, made a large mistake by raising their property and school taxes and they
did a fantastic job at this and exceeded almost all other L.A towns during the time. Yikes. Fortunately,
this did not stop people from relocating there during World War II. Schools became so crowded,
understaffed and obtained an inadequate amount of resources making it evident that the system was
failing. When the schools funding became nearly forty percent from local tax payer s dollars in the
mid sixties and early seventies, many fled the scene and moved to an area with lower taxes, but the
blacks remained. At this point, Compton was termed as the Black Beverly Hills , but this all began to
go downhill after the riots in 1965. Drug and juvenile arrests reached an all time high during the 1960

The Treatment Of Pancreatic Transplants
Pancreatic transplants have had a lot of advancements over the last several years to help patients with
Type 1 DM and the complications that arise from the disease. The increasing numbers of people with
diabetes is cause for concern. In some cases diabetes can be prevented but in others its more about
genetics; but with many medical advances patients have a better chance for survival. With
advancements in surgical procedures pancreatic transplants are improving as well as the increased
odds of curing Type 1. When this happens this will decrease the number of other co morbidities like
DKA, heart disease, nephropathy, blindness, and even amputation from infection and decreased blood

Diabetes effects all body systems not just the endocrine. All three types can effect and cause damage
to the neurological, renal, and circulatory systems.
There are different treatment options for Type 1 and 2 diabetes that include oral medications, insulin
injections, and insulin pumps(Diabetes and Kidney Disease). Oral medications are the most
commonly used because of their ease of use and usually lowers the hemoglobin A1C effectively but
can at times cause hypoglycemia (glucose levels falling below normal range of values). Oral
medications are also mostly used for Type 2. Insulin is the method of choice in type 1 diabetes
treatment plans. Insulin injections help reproduce the secretions of the pancreas. There are two types
of insulin that is used, long acting and short acting. These help to better manage a person depending
on meal consumption, caloric intake, and carbohydrate intake. Another way to manage type 1 is by an
insulin pump. An insulin pump delivers continuous subcutaneous infusion of insulin (Lemur and
Batuman 210). Only 1 insulin is used in a pump, fasting acting. Also a pump can be programmed to
release different amounts of insulin depending on the time of day to better manage glucose levels
without multiple injections daily.
Diabetes can lead to other co morbidities making the body more difficult to manage and maintain
balance. When this happens a condition called

The Effect Of Neural Reflexes On The Gastrointestinal...
ows neural reflexes to occur solely in the gastrointestinal tract, independent of the brain and spinal
cord (Widmaier et al. 2014).
Within the tubular gastrointestinal tract, the ENS is formed by various interconnected networks, called
plexuses, of enteric neurons, glial cells, and axons (Widmaier et al. 2014). The majority of these nerve
cells are found within two different arrangements of ganglia (Fig. 1): the myenteric (Auerbach s)
plexus and the submucosal (Meissner s) plexus (Furness 2006; Guyton and Hall 2006). The nerve
cells axons either synapse with additional neurons in the plexus or innervate the smooth muscle of
digestive organs (Furness 2006). Neural activity in one plexus can affect activity in the other since
some axons in one plexus synapse with neurons in the other (Fig. 1) (Widmaier et al. 2014). Extrinsic
nerve fibers from the parasympathetic and sympathetic systems can also synapse with neurons in each
of the two plexuses (Fig. 1) (Guyton and Hall 2006). Though the ENS can function without these
nerve pathways, the subsystems of the ANS can influence gastrointestinal activity (Guyton and Hall
2006; Widmaier et al. 2014). An example would include either inhibiting or enhancing the GI tract s
motility and secretory activity through the sympathetic and parasympathetic fibers (Widmaier et al.
2014).
The myenteric and submucosal plexuses each have different physiological functions. The myenteric
plexus spans the length of the intestinal wall and consists of

Reaction Paper On Lupus
Systemic lupus erythematosus (more commonly known as lupus) is an autoimmune disease that
affects more women than men, usually between ages 15 to 45. The cause is often unknown, although
in some individuals, the condition may be drug induced. The symptoms may differ from patient to
patient, but commonly include a butterfly rash on the face, ulcerations on the mouth, nose, and vagina,
loss of hair, thick scarring, changes in skin pigmentation, hives, welts, and color changes in the
fingertips as a response to changes in temperature and stress (Raynaud s phenomena). As the disease
progresses, it begins to involve other systems of the body such as the kidneys, heart, lungs and joints.

However, it is best to let your doctor know about symptoms you think are coming from your drugs.
Lupus is often associated with weight gain due to inactivity and medications, so it is important to eat
wisely to achieve a healthy weight. On the other hand, some people experience poor appetite and
weight loss, which can result from the illness or from medications. Consult your doctor, nurse or
registered dietitian who can help evaluate your diet and suggest a suitable program to help you
manage your weight. People who are battling lupus have higher risk of complications such as heart
disease, so it is important to consume a heart healthy as part of your treatment plan. Your doctor may
find you have certain risk factors for heart disease such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure. You
may be advised to take a low fat diet and do exercises regularly. Your doctor may also recommend a
low sodium diet to reduce high blood pressure. Studies show that omega 3 fatty acids from fish oils or

Relationship Between Convergence And Harry Potter
Convergence has become somewhat vital to the success of a screen text; the number of mediums it
engages with can, to some extent, affect how much of a fan base it creates. The power of the media
producer and the power of the media consumer interact in unpredictable ways stated by Henry
Jenkins. (2006:2) Participatory culture has, in some cases, created the potential for more enriched
franchises that surpass their original purpose, some screen texts can develop a lot further than
expected due to how well received they are. The popularity of the most recognizable film franchises
could be seen as the product of convergence within fan culture. In this essay, I am going to discuss the
relationship between Harry Potter fans and convergence and the various ways the fans have
constructed alternate views of the franchise. I will discuss how Harry Potter has become globally
successful through its convergence and fan culture.
Harry Potter is a relevant case study of convergence because it extends past its original platform,
which was books; there are now Harry Potter video games, merchandise, themed websites and, the
most recent of which, theme parks. In this case, Universal, a company in partnership with Warner
Brothers who own Harry Potter, opened a Harry Potter segment to their original theme park in 2014 in
Florida. This was an effort to bring back the former popularity it once had, such as when the first book
was written in 1997 by J.K.Rowling. The series has become a global

Aquarium and Conservatory
The first time a person looks upon the visual piece on the outside of the Belle Isle Aquarium, even if
that person does not speak English, they can easily deduce what is hidden within the interesting
building. The outside shows koi fish, shells (a sign of welcome), Roman God of the sea (Neptune) as
the keystone on the arch, and a cartouche displaying the seal of the city of Detroit. This is all done in
Terra Cotta, interestingly enough. With this being the entrance, upon entering the building any person
would know that they would soon meet aquatic creatures. The Conservatory is very architecturally

The cross shaped floor plan allows the maximum amount of tanks while providing a sense of mystery

home to otters, however, they started to create too much of an odor so they had to be removed. There
was once also a large shrunken pool under the dome that was home to an alligator and turtles.
At the time of its opening, the Aquarium was among the sixth largest in the world (Austin). High tech
equipment, for this time, was installed and permitted for the keeping of both seawater and fresh water
marine life and the observance of the correct water temperatures in the correct tanks. The water was
recycled through the tanks because, according to marine preservationists, fish survive better in water
they have already lived in (Austin). Originally, an 8,531 gallon center tank with a railing around it
occupied the center of the building and was topped off with filtered water that snaked through 5 miles
of piping. The Conservatory is not only a Greenhouse, but also a Botanical garden, and has a dome of

Heroic Heros
Most of the heroes in the superhero universe can be broken down into three groups. Marvel and DC
Comics are the main contributors to this superhero fandom. These two companies even contributed the
term superhero. Neither company owns it, they just share it. Many of the interesting heroes/ heroines
have brain powers, body powers, and some are even powerless. This class is the mind boggling
brainiac s. Not because they are smart, but because they have brain powers. Brain powers include
telekinesis, aqua kinesis, telepathy, and many more. The most classic and recognizable candidate for
Brainiac s would be Jean Grey. Jean Grey was 10 years old when her mutant telepathic powers first
manifested after experiencing the emotions of a dying friend. ( Jean Grey , 2006, para.1). Her
telekinetic abilities allow her to levitate or pick up cars with her mind. She also has telepathic abilities,
this allows her to read minds and put thoughts in people s brains. Jean and her amazing powers landed
her a spot as one of the founding X Men. Aquaman is another suitable hero for this class. Aquaman,
like his name suggests, has the power to control the water. This is called aqua kinesis. Another cool
power of his is telepathy, like Jean, but with a twist. He uses his telepathy to communicate with the
sea creatures, like the dolphins and the menacing sharks. There are moments where I m in the shower,
or even just playing in water that I feel like aqua man. I feel as if I have his aqua kinetic

affects that stereotypes have on women that effect their performance including anxiety and other
affective and cognitive responses. (John) When stereotypes are put into play, they cause problems and
the people cannot perform properly because they start to believe the lies of the stereotypes. One thing
from New Trends in Gender and Mathematics Performance: A Meta Analysis writes that women

(Lindberg) This shows that college student women do not perform well when they are pressured by
the stereotypes people say to them, but when put in a place where there are no stereotypes pressuring

females have trouble with competing against males, because they feel that they are not good enough.

Summary Understanding how duty of care impacts on occupational health and safety policies is a
crucial element in workplace policy development. Duty of care is not generally defined in legislation
and is evolutionary as it adapts with the change of society. The reader needs to understand this when
introduced to duty of care. Employees should understand how and the scope of the duty of care as it
applies to them, as demonstrated in the examples included in this report. It is also important to
communicate to all staff how, when implemented correctly, duty of care benefits not just the employer,

Employers have a duty to ensure, as far as reasonably practicable, both the health and safety of their

organisations to manage and reduce workplace hazards and risks to ensure the safety of all workers.
Workplace hazards are potentially a source of harm or conflicting health effects on a person (Hsa.ie,

Acute Myeloid Leukemia
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a type of cancer that is defined by permeation of the bone marrow,
blood, and other tissues by proliferative, clonal, abnormally differentiated, and occasionally poorly

cells and the bone marrow microenvironment is one of the characteristics of leukemia. The important
components of the bone marrow environment include tumor cells, extracellular matrix, non tomur

Angiogenesis refers to the formation of new blood vessels from the previous arteries(11). Studies have
shown that tumor development and invasion in solid tumors are associated with angiogenesis, and
recent evidence suggests that angiogenesis may be in the development of acute myeloid leukemia(12).
In acute myeloid leukemia, angiogenesis directly contributes to the tumor progression by the provision
of necessary factors for blast proliferation as well as through angiogenic factors(13)..significant
angiogenic factors include VEGF A, BFGF, PDGF, FGF, in which among them VEGF A is the most
important. Furthermore the angiogenesis, VEGF A has other functions in the progress of leukemia
cells, which performs these functions by autocrine and paracrine loops. When VEGF A binds to its
receptors on leukemia cells it stimulates proliferation in these cells and also increases survival by
reducing apoptotic proteins (autocrine).

While the Black Death had many adverse effects, there were good ones too. Since there were fewer

how appreciation affects interest rates and exchange rates
1. Explain the how appreciation affects interest rates and exchange rates. How does this influence
commodity currency? Should we return to a gold standard? Why or why not?
Business dictionary defines an exchange rate as the rate at which one currency can be exchanged for
another. In other words, it is the value of another country s currency compared to that of your own. If
you are planning a trip to travel abroad this is something that needs to be calculated along the trip,
because in order to purchase goods or services while aboard one would need to purchase the local
currency. Just like the price of any asset, the exchange rate is the price at which you can buy that

For instance, if the dollar depreciates relative to the euro, the exchange rate rises. When the dollar
depreciates relative to the euro, the dollar becomes more competitive because the price of American
goods when exchanged to euro will be cheaper leading to a larger American export. On the other hand,
European countries that denominate its goods and services in Euros will have lost competitiveness to
the dollar. The price of European products will thus become more expensive in America. A currency
appreciates as a result of increased demand for that currency on world markets. Its value in the world
market increases. This increase in demand can occur for several reasons which include: When a
country s exports are high, the buyers of these exports need its currency to pay for those exports. Also
when the country s central bank increases interest rates, people will want that currency to deposit in
the banks to earn that higher interest rate. The higher the interest rate the stronger the currency.
Gold standard Between 1870 and 1914, there was a global fixed exchange rate. Currencies were
linked to gold, meaning that the value of a local currency was fixed at a set exchange rate to gold
ounces. This was known as the gold standard. This allowed for unrestricted capital mobility as well as
global stability in currencies and trade. However, with the start of World War I, the gold standard was
abandoned. To help combat the Great Depression, faced

Universal Health Care System
Health care is one of the most important systems in this world. With insurance you are most likely to
receie health care and have a better health status. Uninsured people are less likely to receive medical
care and more likely to have poor health status. When you dont have insurance you are most likely to
pay a lot more money for health care but if you have insurance they are most likely to cover the whole
payment or most of the bill. A universal health care system would bring costs down and increase
access to care.
In 2005, 45 milion Americans lacked insurance which is over 15% of the population. America needs
to get a universal healthcare system because health care is a right that people deserve but too few
people have. The younger generations who are barely getting there first jobs, most of them dont have

We can perhaps study the ways other countries have effectively implemented this system. For
example, Europe has a system in which all residents pay into a common fund that creates a pool of

The Life Of Catherine Malabou And Levi Bryant
Catherine Malabou and Levi Bryant: A critical comparison of materialisms
Speculative materialism arose in response to the post Kantian philosophy of correlationism. Scholars
have since debated the relationship of the perceived (object) and the perceiver (subject). Kant s
transcendental materialist philosophy supports what Quentin Meillassoux terms weak correlationism
in that it allows for the thinking of the unknowable. However, strong correlationist (i.e. Heidegger and
Hegel) refute that humans can escape their own thoughts, therefore making it impossible to know or
even imagine that anything outside of the correlationist circle (objects in and of themselves) exists.
Both Catherine Malabou and Levi Bryant can be seen as emphasizing speculative materialism in that
they attempt to move beyond this subject object correlate. While Malabou describes neuronal
plasticity in What Should We Do With Our Brain, Bryant focuses on machines and their ontology in
Onto Cartography: An Ontology of Machines and Media. Malabou s ultimate description of the
resistance and contradiction between the brain and mind fails to be accounted for by Bryant s ontology
and conception of machines . Bryant s object oriented ontology does little to explain the origin of
freedom in his machines (whereby we can begin to take charge of society); however, Bryant does
suggest the use of thermopolitics to attack institutions. Together, Malabou and Bryant s philosophies
provide new ways of thinking about

The Movie Platoon
I m writing about four films, Platoon by Oliver Stone, Drone by Robert Glickert, Donnie Darko by
Richard Kelly, and finally Saving Private Ryan by Steven Spielberg. These four films all fit into the
theme, which is the blurring of morality. This theme relates to these movies though revenge, drug use,
and questionable orders made by people in command. I will first be discussing how revenge fits into
the theme. I have purposely chosen to talk about revenge first because I believe that more can be
learnt from drug use or questionable orders. After discussing revenge I will then talk about drug use
and finally discuss how questionable orders fits into the theme. I believe that we can learn the most
from questionable orders, making it the most important. One of the main links between the films
Platoon and Drone is how people, or is this case soldiers, seek revenge against their enemy. In Platoon
this greed for revenge is shown when U.S. marines discover a village with, enough rice to feed an
entire regiment, of North Vietnamese soldiers. With this information some U.S. soldiers can t see
anything wrong with raping and violently assaulting members of the new enemy village. This is where
the blurring of morality comes into effect in Platoon, some U.S. soldiers feel it s okay to now treat
villages like animals, just because they were caught helping the North Vietnamese. In Drone this greed
for revenge is shown when a U.S. commander orders soldiers in the field to execute

Cell Phines Chould Not Be Allowed in School
ARRGUMENTATIVE RESEARCH PAPER SUBMITED TO: MRS PITA RHAM SUBMITED BY:
DERVIN GARCIAABSTRACT Cell phones are wireless phones that most people use now. First they
used the home phone which is still used in different countries in the world. In 1834 a man named
Michael Faraday, was studying if space could conduct electricity and he came with the idea to develop
the cell phone. Cell phones are now used everywhere by anyone, even kids. This brings a problem,
CELL PHONES in school. Cell phones should not be allowed in school. Cell phone has a harmful
effect on teenagers. Student at high school should not be allowed with cell phones due to certain
circumstances. There are many disadvantages derived from the uses of cell phones ... Show more

If the student has an emergency, don t you think that they should discuss the problem with the school
counselor? Plus if they need to call this can easily be achieved by phoning their parents directly from
school. Cell phones are distraction in class when learning is taken place. Many schools in higher crime
areas began banning cell phones long time, due to the business of illegal drugs and other gang related
activities. Students can be able to order and use illegal drugs during school hours and could have them
delivered right to the school before the end of the day. This made it more convenient for the children
because they are at school and away from the prying eyes of their parent. In the case of bomb threats
at school, the threat itself was probably called into the school on a cell phone because of these devices;
they cannot be traced by law enforcement officials. In other words to trace a bomb in a cell phone is
difficult and to evacuate an entire school it s kind of hard. While most of these threats turn out to be
hoaxes, a real bomb could possibly be detonated by cell phone usage. Also if the teenagers take
phones to school, not every student will remember to put his/her phone on vibration, this can leads to
classes interruption by the occasionally ring

Paolaemonetes Vulgaris Case Study
Fort DeSoto Park is a protected marine environment that is next to Eckerd College, an unprotected
marine environment in Boca Ciega Bay. Palaemonetes vulgaris (common name grass shrimp) is an
invertebrate that is native to both areas. The comparison that is to be made is the average total length
of Palaemonetes vulgaris between these two environments. The alternate hypothesis is because of
human interaction occurring in the waters of unprotected areas, the Palaemonetes vulgaris will have a
shorter average total length there. The null hypothesis is there is no difference in the size of
Palaemonetes vulgaris growing in the protected vs. unprotected areas, because predators will eat all
the shrimp in both areas causing them to have the same ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The protected areas of Fort DeSoto will have larger specimens than the unprotected areas of Eckerd
College, because of the protection rights that Fort DeSoto has in place. Where Eckerd College is not a
protected environment the Palaemonetes vulgaris are open to over fishing areas. The results could
have different outcomes based on a change in locations where the Palaemonetes vulgaris were
sampled. Based on the results, the null hypothesis is rejected because the Palaemonetes vulgaris in
Fort DeSoto are of greater average total length (mm) than in Boca Ciega Bay at Eckerd College.
Based on the results, the alternate hypothesis is accepted, because of human interactions at Eckerd
College, the Palaemonetes vulgaris have shorter average total length (mm) than Fort DeSoto. By using
Fort DeSoto s data from 2012 (5 years ago from today, 2017) the results may have changed
dramatically in the size and quantity of the Palaemonetes vulgaris. Knowing the correct formulas and
not miss keying the information being entered in to the Excel spreadsheet will affect the out coming
results in the table. Knowing that the data from Fort DeSoto is from 5 years ago, I would want to
update that information first by recollecting the data. The direction that future research could take
would be to analysis the three different kinds of shrimp found in the areas. Based on the data

Kappa Alpha Stereotypes
While going through the process of determining what college to go to many students focus on what
majors are provided, location, an overall sense of the school, and several other things. One thing that
is often overlooked is the option of going Greek. Many male students often do not even consider the
option of going Greek because of false pretenses. One common misconception of going Greek is
because the members are stereotyped to be party goers who do not do well in college. This could not
be further from the truth. For members of the Kappa Alpha Order, there are several ambitious
standards that must be maintained to stay in the Order. Also, joining Kappa Alpha opens members,
both current and former, to several opportunities. Finally, Kappa Alpha is an Order that holds several
beliefs that most southerners have faith in. When someone thinks about a Greek Community they
normally associate it with what they have learned through stereotypes such as the movie Animal
House. The members of the fraternity depicted in this film were not the definition of the ideal college
student. They would have parties almost every day along with copious amounts of drinking. Their
grades reflected on this when the main members of the movie were kicked out for not maintaining a
high enough grade point average. This movie is completely fictional. The members of Kappa Alpha
are held to an extremely high standard when it comes to academics and behavior. Robi Rini, the
Corresponding Secretary of Kappa

Summary Of Matrix Of Domination
1. Keller distinguishes between both functional and critical oppositional public intellectuals in his
article. He defines functional as those who serve to reproduce and legitimate the values of existing
societies (Keller). While on the other hand he defines critical oppositional public intellectuals as those
who oppose the existing order and militate for progressive social change (Keller). From the two styles
of theorizing the one that appeals to me would be critical oppositional public intellectual. This style
appeals to me because the domain of this style is to defend and fight for human freedom, fight against
oppression and also injustice. I believe in all of these things and I would be willing to fight for what I

Lengerman and Niebrugge believed that female sociologists early focused on advocacy to undercut
their perceived importance because they were constantly being compared to the male sociologists. The
authors addressed in their article that the academic work site made it all but impossible for women to
interact with men as professional equals in face to face relations (Pg. 16). When women were
compared to men, they were seen to have a lack of authority , the less than being or the being who
need not be taken seriously (Pg. 10). It has been more common for the ideas and works of the males to
be heard and published. For the reason being females got the short end of the stick, meaning they had

Wizard Of Oz
The Wonderfully written and film called the Wizard of Oz was first published in Chicago in 1900. The
author, L. Frank Baum, was the editor of a South Dakota newspaper and who also supported William
Jennings Bryan who happened to win three times, uneventfully, as a U.S. Presidential candidate for
the Democratic Party. The main concern of Baum and Bryan was the nature of the money supply in
the United States, and in the Mid Western States in their concern. In America during the 1890s, in
Britain, there had been a severe depression. Several businesses had gone bankrupt, all farmers were
forced to sell up all they had owned, factories closed, and workers made the unemployed list. Baum
and Bryan wanted money to be based on silver, and as for silver, ... Show more content on

Next, Dorothy encounters a Tin Woodsman, representing the industrial workers in the Mid West,
rusted as solid in the factories of the 1890s depression, and who have lost all of heir sense of
compassion. As well, a spell cast upon himself by the Wicked Witch of the East meant that every time
he swung his axe, he chopped off a bit of himself. Then as they growing party continues, they
encounter a Cowardly Lion, representing the politicians. These politicians have the power, through the
power of the one an only Congress and of course the Constitution, to therefore confront the Wicked
Witches, of course representing the banks, but sadly they lack the courage to do the confronting.
Dorothy is able to motivate these three great forces and lead them all towards the Emerald City, and an

and apparently so awesome, but he turns out to be a little midget man without the power that people

Shermer points out that the concepts of afterlife and near death experiences are illusion of the brain. Chopra disproves that afterlife is a concept from the scientific perspective in the course of refuting the arguments of Shermer. In what follows, this essay is an agnostic point of view for support neither of the arguers.... (THESIS......) There are two separate parts of the debate in respect of the issue of afterlife. In the first place, Michael Shermer argues that afterlife is not real on the basis of six main evidences from Deepak Chopra s book, Life After Death: Burden of Proof. Shermer claims that the idea of afterlife or paradise are shaped and reshaped by the human mind to refute the arguments forwarded by Chopra. By using the report about out of body experiences, Shermer points out that it is impossible to have a world after death or any out of the body paradise. To strengthen his argument, Shermer restates the argument that there is no afterlife since [paradise] is in our thoughts and in our actions. It is in our lives and in our loves. It is in our families and in our friends. It is in our communities and in our world. It is in the courage of our convictions and in the character of our souls (The Great Afterlife, p15). On the other hand, Deepak Chopra refutes the arguments made by Shermer and afterlife is about consciousness in the second place. He argues that afterlife is not from imaginations and it is a state of awareness by citing the modern near death experiences are of concrete nature. From the scientific and metaphysical perspectives, Chopra claims that Hamlet was right to call death an undiscovered country, not because the living cannot reach it but because heaven s geography keeps shifting (The ... • 3. Feminist Criticism Of Women In Frankenstein In Which a Feminist Killjoy Ruins Frankenstein for Sexists Mary Shelley s Frankenstein does not seem like a novel that empowers women. Based on the doormat esque female characters and entitled male protagonist, one might easily assume that Frankenstein is a typical male penned, patriarchy saturated 19th century work. However, when examined with feminist ideals in mind, Shelley s novel actually makes a progressive argument about the role of women. Though the female characters are certainly lacking in both number and substance, this absence hinders Victor and his goals and does not merely assert that women are useless. In addition, the role of maternity and maternal figures amplifies the meaning of Frankenstein; the creation and caring for of life manifests as an immensely important process with both benefits and consequences, not as merely women s work . Through an analysis of the existing female characters and the lack thereof, as well as by understanding the maternal figures present and how they further the novel, one can see how Shelley s Frankenstein reveals that feminine roles are necessary for a functional society. None of Shelley s female characters in Frankenstein are feminist icons; the women of the novel are written as passive, defined entirely by the men in their lives. This understanding, which informs Stephanie Haddad s article Women as the Submissive Sex in Mary Shelley s Frankenstein , is partially achieved through point of view, specifically that of ... • 4. Architectural Styles Of The Ottoman Empire Distinguishable characteristics like the form, method of construction, regional features, and the materials used to make a building or any other construction, which helps in identifying that structure amongst others are what comprise an architectural style. Architectural styles have a vast diversity as they represent changes in beliefs, religion, fashion, and the invention of new technology over a broad time period. Over the ages, different empires would rule over a region with each ruler of those empires having their own unique perspective on their religion. Subsequently, when new empires would come in power, they would then take inspiration from the previous empire s architecture and add or remove characteristics from the architecture based on their personal religious perspectives. In the same way, the Ottoman empire was influenced by styles of architecture from the preceding empires, namely the Byzantine, Iranian, and Islamic architectural styles. As a result, the Ottoman empire s architectural style has resemblances with the Romanesque architecture, which is a blend of the ancient Roman and Byzantine architectures. And it also has similarities with the Gothic architecture which was heavily influenced by the Romanesque architecture and subsequently by the Renaissance architecture. However, all three of these architectural styles also have their differences due to individual religious perspectives. The Byzantine architecture made with architectural traditions of the ... Home Inequalities In Public Schools When the Home Hurts the Schooled: The Inequalities in Public School Education The education system in America is stained by racial and structural inequalities that cause those in lower income areas to not receive the necessary resources that enable a student to thrive. These benefits are as simple as certified teachers (Turner), maintained classrooms, and even accredited school districts. The common denominator in the lack of basic expectations is the type of funding public schools receive. The federal government gives about 10 percent of the money schools have to spend (Turner), while the state and mainly local dollars have to provide the rest. Buckley, validated the use of restrictive covenants, a legally enforceable contract imposed in a deed upon the buyer of property ( 1920s 1948: Racially Restrictive Covenants ). These covenants were typically used to permit the denial of ownership to a black family. Covenants, neighborhood groups, and other types of legislative or physical interference, froze efforts to integrate, forcing black families to live in inadequate housing conditions at absurdly high prices. After racially restrictive covenants and Federal Housing Administration practices were deemed racist and immoral, the damage was already done. Black families living in previously marked red zones could not afford to move out of their segregated and underdeveloped neighborhoods. The public schools in these districts suffered as well because of the decreasing values of the properties and the high concentration of low income residents. A message of at least 20 characters will be generated using a Vigener cipher keys that is at least three letters long, The message will be encrypted along with an explanation of how secure this message is and why. The form of security chose for the network will be identified with physical and electronic security considered. Included will be virus checks, firewalls, and encryption protocols as well as any access protocols explaining how each secures the network. This work will additionally list three specific project goals which if met would reduce or alleviate any problems or deficiencies. I. Database Access for Data Storage and Internal Application Sharing and Desktop Computers Security controls for the network system involves the creation of access and use for each user or user group. The control is used to restrict a list of possible actions down to the allowed actions. For example, encryption can be used to restrict access to data, application controls to restrict processing via authentication, and DRM storage to prevent unauthorized accesses. Himes College of Western Idaho Abstract The predominant view in the United States is that The Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890 was passed with the intent to protect consumers from inefficient market forms, and predation by large corporations. The specific provisions of the Sherman Act, as well as the later Clayton Act of 1914, prohibit acts that are considered to be anti competitive such as cartels, monopolies, price discrimination, and predatory pricing. Mergers and acquisitions are also individually reviewed to ensure they won t have an anti competitive effect on the market. (DOJ 1997) Note that price fixing doesn t necessarily need to result in increased prices. Price fixing scenarios require two main ingredients to be effective for the companies that attempt them. First, the demand curve for the product or service in question must be sufficiently inelastic such that a decrease in production will raise the price enough to ensure a higher profit level. The second requirement for price fixing is that participating companies must combine for an effective monopoly of the market in question. If two relatively minor companies decide to raise their prices together, this will only result in the rest of the market taking additional share, and the conspirators losing money. In a free market economy, price fixing agreements face two large challenges to their effectiveness. The first is that while the companies participating in a price fixing agreement will benefit as a whole from adhering to the agreement, each individual company has a very strong incentive to cheat on the agreement and charge a market rate. Lowering prices allows the company to pick up additional market share from their competitors and increase profits for themselves above what they would be entitled to under the agreement. The second difficulty arises from the fact that without very high barriers to market entry, the higher prices being charged ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Standards For Financial Decision Making Abstract. The article reviewed was Standards for Financial Decision Making: Legal, Ethical, and Practical Issues. The key of the abstract is to emphasize the existence of standards and statutory mechanisms for financial decision making. The article is based on standards of the National Guardianship Association (NGA) (p. 1275). Introduction. The authors study the meaning of term standard . Some dictionaries determine the term standard as a model of acceptance, others as a measuring criterion. If entities do not operate under the established standards, they face with sanctions for ethical violations and professional negligence. The authors analyzes principles and guidance of NGA standards, and frequent mistakes when making financial decisions. The main objective of the study is to analyze conflicting issues of financial decision making, guardianship problems, and adoption of NGA standards (pp. 1275 1276). The study is important because it demonstrates practical approaches of applying standards to the common financial decisions. The authors consider two problems: the impact of fiduciary duties on decision making standards, and the acceptance of model behavior by guardians of business. Literature Review. The authors use a systematic review of literature in the research. The literature review is categorized into three parts: general principles of decision making, the role of guardian and conservator in decision making, the relationships between fiduciary duties and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main character, Blossom Edwards, is a young woman doing a traditionally man s job. Edwards has to take over her uncle s taxi business to make ends meet for the family or they will do without the basics necessities. Another instance of desperation Hamilton uses is of a young boy trying to get a taxi ride on several occasions. We find he has to get home to take care of younger siblings and, if need be, will walk many miles to do so. The body language of characters also creates a sense of pathos throughout the piece. You can feel the discouragement, fear, desperation and happiness without a single word from the characters. Danger is another effective tool this filmmaker puts in place for her audience to create pathos. This is done with a news bulletin on the radio about shootings, an attack on Edwards husband for wearing the wrong color shirt, and an intense scene involving a roadblock by gunmen. But Hamilton gives us hope too. Edwards finally gives the young boy a ride despite the danger that may be involved in doing so. She also pays the gunmen at the roadblock to let her pass with the boy in her taxi rather than leaving him to an uncertain fate at their hands. And when the election, the cause of all the tension, is over luminaires are sent up to signal a new beginning. Keeping in mind, all the while this is all in a day s work for a young woman trying to feed her family. Overcoming gender biases toward women and girls ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

To counteract this, many nations believed that a united Europe could suppress the intense nationalism and militarism that lead to both world wars. Other nations reacted with advocacy, protest or were simply equivocal. Post WWII Europe was extremely chaotic and disjointed. Alliances had been made and broken during the world wars, so tensions were at an all time high throughout the continent. Germany was split into zones of occupation and the Cold War was brewing. From a person s smartphone used to pass the time by mindlessly playing games to the United States federal computer networks filled with incredibly confidential databases and mainframes, the wide range of differing types of technology and networks is utilized for an even larger spectrum of capabilities, depending on who is operating. • 23. The Effect Of Neural Reflexes On The Gastrointestinal... ows neural reflexes to occur solely in the gastrointestinal tract, independent of the brain and spinal cord (Widmaier et al. 2014). Within the tubular gastrointestinal tract, the ENS is formed by various interconnected networks, called plexuses, of enteric neurons, glial cells, and axons (Widmaier et al. 2014). The majority of these nerve cells are found within two different arrangements of ganglia (Fig. 1): the myenteric (Auerbach s) plexus and the submucosal (Meissner s) plexus (Furness 2006; Guyton and Hall 2006). The nerve cells axons either synapse with additional neurons in the plexus or innervate the smooth muscle of digestive organs (Furness 2006). Neural activity in one plexus can affect activity in the other since some axons in one plexus synapse with neurons in the other (Fig. 1) (Widmaier et al. 2014). Extrinsic nerve fibers from the parasympathetic and sympathetic systems can also synapse with neurons in each of the two plexuses (Fig. 1) (Guyton and Hall 2006). This is all done in Terra Cotta, interestingly enough. With this being the entrance, upon entering the building any person would know that they would soon meet aquatic creatures. At the end of the aquarium was once a home to otters, however, they started to create too much of an odor so they had to be removed. There was once also a large shrunken pool under the dome that was home to an alligator and turtles. At the time of its opening, the Aquarium was among the sixth largest in the world (Austin). High tech equipment, for this time, was installed and permitted for the keeping of both seawater and fresh water marine life and the observance of the correct water temperatures in the correct tanks. The water was recycled through the tanks because, according to marine preservationists, fish survive better in water they have already lived in (Austin). Originally, an 8,531 gallon center tank with a railing around it occupied the center of the building and was topped off with filtered water that snaked through 5 miles of piping. • 27. Heroic Heros Most of the heroes in the superhero universe can be broken down into three groups. Marvel and DC Comics are the main contributors to this superhero fandom. These two companies even contributed the term superhero. Neither company owns it, they just share it. Many of the interesting heroes/ heroines have brain powers, body powers, and some are even powerless. This class is the mind boggling brainiac s. Not because they are smart, but because they have brain powers. Brain powers include telekinesis, aqua kinesis, telepathy, and many more. The most classic and recognizable candidate for Brainiac s would be Jean Grey. Jean Grey was 10 years old when her mutant telepathic powers first manifested after experiencing the emotions of a dying friend. ( Jean Grey , 2006, para.1). Her telekinetic abilities allow her to levitate or pick up cars with her mind. She also has telepathic abilities, this allows her to read minds and put thoughts in people s brains. Jean and her amazing powers landed her a spot as one of the founding X Men. Aquaman is another suitable hero for this class. Aquaman, like his name suggests, has the power to control the water. This is called aqua kinesis. Another cool power of his is telepathy, like Jean, but with a twist. He uses his telepathy to communicate with the sea creatures, like the dolphins and the menacing sharks. Should we return to a gold standard? Why or why not? Business dictionary defines an exchange rate as the rate at which one currency can be exchanged for another. In other words, it is the value of another country s currency compared to that of your own. If you are planning a trip to travel abroad this is something that needs to be calculated along the trip, because in order to purchase goods or services while aboard one would need to purchase the local currency. For instance, if the dollar depreciates relative to the euro, the exchange rate rises. When the dollar depreciates relative to the euro, the dollar becomes more competitive because the price of American goods when exchanged to euro will be cheaper leading to a larger American export. On the other hand, European countries that denominate its goods and services in Euros will have lost competitiveness to the dollar. The price of European products will thus become more expensive in America. A currency appreciates as a result of increased demand for that currency on world markets. Its value in the world market increases. This increase in demand can occur for several reasons which include: When a country s exports are high, the buyers of these exports need its currency to pay for those exports. Also when the country s central bank increases interest rates, people will want that currency to deposit in the banks to earn that higher interest rate. The higher the interest rate the stronger the currency. Gold standard Between 1870 and 1914, there was a global fixed exchange rate. Currencies were linked to gold, meaning that the value of a local currency was fixed at a set exchange rate to gold ounces. This was known as the gold standard. The Life Of Catherine Malabou And Levi Bryant Catherine Malabou and Levi Bryant: A critical comparison of materialisms Speculative materialism arose in response to the post Kantian philosophy of correlationism. Scholars have since debated the relationship of the perceived (object) and the perceiver (subject). Kant s transcendental materialist philosophy supports what Quentin Meillassoux terms weak correlationism in that it allows for the thinking of the unknowable. However, strong correlationist (i.e. Heidegger and Hegel) refute that humans can escape their own thoughts, therefore making it impossible to know or even imagine that anything outside of the correlationist circle (objects in and of themselves) exists. These four films all fit into the theme, which is the blurring of morality. This theme relates to these movies though revenge, drug use, and questionable orders made by people in command. I will first be discussing how revenge fits into the theme. I have purposely chosen to talk about revenge first because I believe that more can be learnt from drug use or questionable orders. After discussing revenge I will then talk about drug use and finally discuss how questionable orders fits into the theme. I believe that we can learn the most from questionable orders, making it the most important. One of the main links between the films Platoon and Drone is how people, or is this case soldiers, seek revenge against their enemy. In Platoon this greed for revenge is shown when U.S. marines discover a village with, enough rice to feed an entire regiment, of North Vietnamese soldiers. With this information some U.S. soldiers can t see anything wrong with raping and violently assaulting members of the new enemy village.
