The North Eastern Mountain Bike Development Project
Australia is a developed country where developing takes place every day in different field to enhance
its quality. There 19 places enlisted by UNESCO World heritage that attracts the many people from
the globe to explore its beauty. But time have changes, people began to travel for adventurous sports
and for recreational. Keeping in mind, the project, the North Eastern Mountain Bike Development
project (NEMTB) has initiated. For that, business case has been drafted. Business case is an argument
typically documented which is proposed to persuade a decision maker to approve some sort of activity
or action. As a rule, it needs to express a clear path to an appealing rate of profitability or return on
investments. It is not limited to one area but defines (a) what is the need of business? (b) What are the
strategy and what benefits are expected? (c) What are the problems for defined successful outcome?
(d) Why a particular option is preferred from among the others? (e) How funding will be provided or
whether the cost will be affordable? (f) What external resources will be sourced? (g) How long the
benefits will be delivered? (h) What risk are involved and how they will be managed? (i) What are the
recommendations and what is concluded? So, a business case document ought to look at advantages
and risk involved with and, on the other hand not taking the action. The conclusion ought to be a
convincing contention for execution. The Project, NEMTB is a partnership project between

Deafness Has Been A Negative Label. Being Deaf Is Considered
Deafness has been a negative label. Being Deaf is considered to be a disability solely on the belief that
an individual who is Deaf is not normal due to their hearing loss. Most individuals do not believe that
there are any benefits or positives from being Deaf, nor do they believe that a Deaf individual will
ever be able to live a happy and fulfilled life. However, Deaf individuals do not view themselves as
disabled nor do they view their lives lacking anything, rather they view their Deafness as a gain.
According to H Dirksen Bauman and Joseph Murray, Deaf Gain is defined as a reframing of deaf as a
form of sensory and cognitive diversity that has the potential to contribute to the greater good of
humanity (285). This is solely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hearing individuals can also benefit from learning a visual language, such as American Sign
Language. Learning American Sign Language as a second language and becoming bilingual can help
brain development as well as academic success. Laura Ann Petitto, who is a cognitive neuroscientist,
explains that, being exposed to two languages from birth and in particular, being exposed to a signed
and spoken language from birth does not cause a child to be language delayed and confused (Petitto,
2001). Rather the brain can handle dual languages. Being bilingual can enhance cognitive
development and in particular, learning sign language can increase reading and spelling scores. Petitto
found from her research that children who ve had early exposure to sign language are actually stronger
readers in English than children who are deaf and who have not had access to sign language as well as
monolingual hearing English children (Petitto, 2001). Sign language also helps individuals master
spelling by fingerspelling words.
Although there are many benefits for brain development as well as benefits for academic work,
American Sign Language also entails learning about the Deaf community, which can benefit hearing
individuals understanding of the world. Sign Language creates a sense of belonging and trust that oral
languages are not capable of achieving. When two signers

Michelle Dbq Essay
It is understood that among different mediums of art the narrative voices of male characters generally
express and enthusiastic response over new affectionate emotions towards another female character.
The song Michelle was recorded in November of 1965 and released to the public the following month
written and performed by John Lennon and Sir Paul McCartney, once performed by Sir Paul
McCartney at the White House for the entertainment of President Barack Obama and first lady
Michelle Obama. The song describes the story of a man who loves a woman named Michelle, but
tragically cannot fully express his love, as it suggests that the woman does not speak English, so the
narrator learns several words of her language to attempt to communicate his ... Show more content on

Considering both instances in the two sources, the commentary they make of the male s initial
emotional response to romantic emotion evoked by a strong attraction to a female suggests a largely
verbal and dramaticized response, often toward appearance first. In the song Michelle, the narrator
relies only verbal expression. He sings, Sont les mots qui vont très bien ensemble... I will say the only
words I know that you ll understand (Doc. 1). This shows that the narrator makes extra effort to
verbally communicate with the woman, suggesting he does this because he feels he must, as he sees
no other ways of communication. Romeo, in Shakespeare s The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, is
dramatic in his portrayal of Juliet. He declares, O, she doth teaches the torches to burn bright! (Romeo
and Juliet. 1.5.44). This demonstrates his dramaticity through the use of metaphor, as Juliet does not
teach torches to emit light, but rather she appears to emit more light than a torch in Romeo s
perspective, which is an overstatement in this case. Romeo also makes much commentary on Juliet s
appearance. He exclaims, Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear!

How Instant Messaging ( Im ) And Texting
Discuss how instant messaging (IM) and texting could be a benefit, or an obstacle, or both, in your
industry.
In my workplace, employees are able to connect with colleagues through internal social media and
instant messaging (IM) tools. The social media chat tool affords employees (globally) to connect and
discuss topics such as proposal support, employees with special skillsets, training interest, online
tutorial sessions (i.e., updating resumes, corporate management seminars), shared information
obtained at conferences and/or technology presentations, global engineering industry news, and
individual and team awards and recognition. Although a separate application, messages generated
through the social media tool are displayed in the company s email inbox.
The IM feature is very beneficial because employees can simultaneously review a document or
spreadsheet and communicate/provide input to one another via online IM, instead of over
speakerphone which can be very distracting for employees operating in a cube farm type environment
(common practice within the industry).
To date, I have not viewed the internal social media and instant messaging (IM) tools as obstacles;
however, my email inbox gets very populated by the numerous social media messages from
employees who are sharing information or requesting support.. I don t always find time to review each
message, but I am confident that if my direct assistance is required, I will receive an email requesting

Thai Mutual Fund Performance Skill or Luck
ABSTRACT
Using a data set on Thai open end domestic equity funds over the June 2000 to October 2007 period.
We apply a Bootstrap methodology to distinguish between skill and luck for the individual funds. A
Bootstrap approach is necessary because the nonnormal distributions of individual fund alphas. This
study points to the existence of genuine stock picking skill among the top performing Thai equity
mutual funds, performance which is not solely due to good luck. At the bottom fund, our analysis
strongly rejects the hypothesis that most poor performing funds are merely unlucky. Most of these
funds demonstrate bad skill .

Research Question
With mutual fund alphas that deviate significantly from normality, how many funds from a large
group would we expect to exhibit high alphas simply due to luck, and how does this figure compare to
the number we actually observe?
3
Objectives of the Study
1. To study performance of equity funds in Thailand whether equity funds outperform the benchmark.
2. To study whether performance of equity funds in Thailand is due to genuine stock picking skill or in
part of luck.
3. To study the performance persistence of equity funds in Thailand.
Scope of the Study
Weekly returns of the universe of Thai open end, domestic equity funds which have been operated
during 2000 to 2007 period.
Limitation of Study
1. The returns used in this research are returns of mutual funds. So, we can only evaluate the stock
picking skill of all managers of funds, not skill of individual fund manager. 2. The returns used in this
research are not the net returns, which already deducts management fee. So, there is possibility that
the underperformed fund is caused by ineffective management of fund not from lack of manager‟s
skill.
Contribution of the Study
To guide the investors of equity funds in Thailand how to invest in the outperformed fund by
considering past performance of fund and genuine stock picking

Nationalist Separatists Groups
The group mentioned in the hypothetical scenario could be classified as Nationalist Separatists
terrorists. Nationalist Separatists groups use violence to establish an independent homeland ethnic or
religious group that is persecuted (or believes it is persecuted) by the majority (Maras, 2013, pg. 12).
The group is seeking to liberate itself from the Country of Greece and be recognized as its own
independent Islamic state. A Nationalist Separatist terrorist organization will form when a certain
group feels they are being repressed or discriminated against by the governing system and will attempt
to distance themselves and wish to be recognized as their own independent governing system. To

Plato Essay
Plato
Biography
Plato was born in Athens of an aristocratic family. He recounts in the Seventh Letter, which, if
genuine, is part of his autobiography, that the spectacle of the politics of his day brought him to the
conclusion that only philosophers could be fit to rule. After the death of Socrates in 399, he travelled
extensively. During this period he made his first trip to Sicily, with whose internal politics he became
much entangled. He visited Sicily at least three times in all and may have been richly subsidised by
Dionysius. On return from Sicily he began formal teaching at what became the Academy.
Plato is generally regarded as the inventor of the philosphical argument as we know it, and many
would claim that the depth and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

wealth of humor or imagery, or more dramatic power.Nor in any other of his writings is the attempt
made to interweavelife and speculation, or to connect politics with philosophy. TheRepublic is the
centre around which the other Dialogues may be grouped; here philosophy reaches the highest point to
which ancientthinkers ever attained. Plato among the Greeks, like Bacon among themoderns, was the
first who conceived a method of knowledge, althoughneither of them always distinguished the bare
outline or form from thesubstance of truth; and both of them had to be content with anabstraction of
science which was not yet realized. He was the greatestmetaphysical genius whom the world has seen;
and in him, more thanin any other ancient thinker, the germs of future knowledge arecontained. The
sciences of logic and psychology, which have suppliedso many instruments of thought to after ages,

John Nash, a Beautiful Mind Mathematician
John F. Nash shared the 1994 Nobel Prize with John Harsanyi and Reinhard Selten in economics for
their work on the theory of non cooperative games, in other words John Nash received a Nobel Prize
for his work in Game theory. Except for one course in economics that he took as an undergraduate,
Nash had not any formal training in economics. John Nash had a Ph.D. in mathematics in 1950, but
the Nobel Prize he received four decades later was for the contribution he made to game theory in his
1950 Ph.D. thesis. In his work, he introduced the distinction between cooperative and non cooperative
games. In non cooperative games every player is self enforced, and in cooperative games, players can
make agreements with other players. Nash s contribution is the concept of equilibrium for non
cooperative games, which later came to be called a Nash equilibrium. In Nash equilibrium no player
can improve his position by choosing a different strategy. Nash explained that as long as mixed
strategies are allowed, for a broad class of games, at least one equilibrium exist. Another Nash s
contribution is his reasoning about the bargaining problem, before Nash, economist thought the share
of gains each of two parties to a bargain received was always indeterminate. But Nash got further by
suggesting four conditions and showed mathematically that a unique solution

My First Language Of English Literature
As a child I was born into a Spanish speaking family, which made my first language Spanish. I began
with the similar syllables as most babies do mamà, papà, and so on. Both of my parents are from
different parts of Mexico which exposed me to a Spanish speaking environment and very little
writing. I wrote and read poorly in Spanish. However, the language spoken by my peers outside my
home was another. Being raised in Pomona, CA my community and school practiced wo different
dialects of English. Under these consequences, I remember becoming very frustrated as I learned how
to read. I struggled with reading, prior to my early years in school I had not been exposed to English
literature. I remember feeling inferior to many class members as they caught on faster to the way
words should be pronounced. The period in which reading was taught I did my best to participate as
little as possible. In any case, I was able to catch on for the most part and later taught how to write in
English. Although I struggled with this as well since I tried to apply some of my Spanish literacy
knowledge when writing English. Once I began writing reading helped and made some words
familiar. A key moment in learning English was writing words just as my ears heard them, I remember
my mother saying that was how one wrote in Spanish. Thus, my way of thinking was if by writing as I
heard was done in Spanish, then it should be done in English too, nonetheless, I soon realized that

Retirement Planning Research Paper
There are many people who will offer you a retirement planning tip to help you achieve the retirement
you ve always wanted. Of course, not all this information is good. First of all, you need to realize that
the most important part of your retirement planning is your investing.
Most people pay very little attention to their investing activity, and simply let their employer handle
where their 401k and other retirement money goes. Knowing this information yourself is crucial,
because without understanding investing and knowing the best places to put your money, you will
never achieve your retirement goals and lifestyle.
Of course, without having a specific plan in place, investing is all but useless. First of all, you need

For instance, if you need $1 million in the bank by 2030, your investing choices will be different than
if you knew that you only needed $300,000 in the bank.
The main point is to find out how much money you will need when you retire, and find the right
investment vehicle for you to help get you there. Of course, this vehicle will be different for
everybody depending on their retirement needs; there is no right or wrong answer to where you invest.
You can invest in real state, the stock market, mutual funds, bonds, etc. It really doesn t matter.
When you invest however, remember that the bottom line is always about the numbers. This is the
number one retirement planning tip that just about everybody misses. Believe it or not, most investors
never look at the financial situation behind the investment they are considering.
For example, in the stock market, many investors will simply look at how a stock price of the
company s doing, and jump aboard only because the price is going up. There may be no profits at all
behind that particular company (in fact there often aren t) but they will still invest anyway, because
their stock broker call them up and told them

Burnout Or Compassion Fatigue
Vicarious trauma is also known as compassion fatigue and is often associated with the cost of caring
for others (Figley, 1982). Other terms used to describe this phenomenon are secondary trauma, stress
or secondary victimization (figley, 1982). At the heart of this issue, is that social workers, therapists,
first responders, volunteers, that work with trauma victims/survivors can experience vicarious trauma,
or compassion fatigue because of the work they do, and love. Compassion fatigue is the emotional
residue from the exposure of hearing trauma stories over and over until your heart and head is full
until the caller/client s trauma becomes your experience too. You cannot hear story after story and
remain unaffected. As your callers/clients experience a daily repetition of trauma, so will you .Being a

The day comes and you think you cannot hear one more story of trauma. This is not a sign of burnout
but of compassion fatigue. It s a signal to you that it is time to step back and do self care. Burnout and
compassion fatigue are often confused as the same thing. The difference between them is that burnout
builds up gradually over time and resolves itself when the volunteer or practitioner takes a break or
goes to other work, even in the same field. Vicarious trauma or compassion fatigue is a state of
tension, stress and preoccupation with the stories and traumatic experiences described and endured by
callers/clients. Triggering your own potential traumas or experiences and looping back and forth
between your callers/clients stories and your own until there is no objective place to witness

Intellectual Property in Singapore Essay
Introduction to Intellectual property and various property laws in Singapore
First of all, the definition of Intellectual property refers to the creation of mind, such as literary and
artistic works, inventions, designs, names, symbols, logos and even images used in industries.
Some example of Intellectual property are that business owners, they are given exclusive rights for the
use of their trademark or even their identity, logo, which were originally established by them.

It can also be the new method of doing things, or a technical improvement. Once it is granted, the term
of a patent is 20 years from the Date of Filing, subject to the payment of annual renewal fees. A patent
can also be employed to raise funds for your business and licensing it to third parties for commercial
returns.
There are three criteria for an invention to be patentable. The first criteria is New. The invention
should not be publicly known in anyway or anywhere around the world. The owners of invention
should be careful in keeping the invention as secret until a patent application has been successfully
made. If the idea has already been commercially exploited, demonstrated or advertised, the novelty of
it may be compromised. If the invention requires disclosure to a third party before the patent
application is made, a non disclosure agreement should be drawn up.
The second criteria is inventive step. The invention must be a representation of improvement over any
existing product or process that is already available. The improvement cannot be obvious to someone
with technical skills or knowledge in its particular field. The invention would not fulfil the
requirements of this criteria if it is obvious to a person skilled in the art, even though it is new.
The third criteria is industrial application. The invention must be useful and have some form of
practical application. It

Fun, creative, motivational, and humorous, private and homemade videos were where YouTube really
shined during the previous decade. Anyone with a computer, camera, and video editing software had
an outlet to show their creative works for fun or presentation, with little restriction besides time and

addition of advertisement came along with channels becoming more and more popular, acquiring large

Essay Public Subsidies for Sports Facilities
Public Subsidies for Sports Facilities
America is in the midst of a sports construction boom. New sports facilities costing at least $200
million each have been completed or are under way in Baltimore, Charlotte, Chicago, Cincinnati,
Cleveland, Milwaukee, Nashville, San Francisco, St. Louis, Seattle, Tampa, and Washington, D.C.,
and are in the planning stages in Boston, Dallas, Minneapolis, New York, and Pittsburgh. Major
stadium renovations have been undertaken in Jacksonville and Oakland. Industry experts estimate that
more than $7 billion will be spent on new facilities for professional sports teams before 2006.
Most of this $7 billion will come from public sources. The subsidy starts with the federal government,
which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, building the facility creates construction jobs. Second, people who attend games or work for the
team generate new spending in the community, expanding local employment. Third, a team attracts
tourists and companies to the host city, further increasing local spending and jobs. Finally, all this new
spending has a multiplier effect as increased local income causes still more new spending and job
creation. Advocates argue that new stadiums spur so much economic growth that they are self
financing: subsidies are offset by revenues from ticket taxes, sales taxes on concessions and other
spending outside the stadium, and property tax increases arising from the stadium s economic impact.
Unfortunately, these arguments contain bad economic reasoning that leads to overstatement of the
benefits of stadiums. Economic growth takes place when a community s resources people, capital
investments, and natural resources like land become more productive. Increased productivity can arise
in two ways: from economically beneficial specialization by the community for the purpose of trading
with other regions or from local value added that is higher than other uses of local workers, land, and
investments. Building a stadium is good for the local economy only if a stadium is the most
productive way to make capital investments and use its workers.

Pygmalion Movie Vs Play
Imagine growing up and having to sell flowers on the street to anyone who passes to make a living.
Eliza Doolittle is a person who had live this way until Henry Higgins and Colonel

To do so Eliza has to learn how to speak proper and get rid of her nasty old ways. However, after she
is transformed she knows not what is to become of her, but she realizes she does not have to put up

Also,
Higgins and Eliza have moments where they begin to sing about the short lines Higgins has Eliza
reading in order to improve her pronunciation (Levin, 1964). Therefore, the play and the film contrast
with the use of music because the book does not implement the musical approach as the film does.
On the other hand, the characters in Pygmalion and My Fair Lady perform both similar and different
actions compared to one or the other. Additionally, however both the play and the film mostly shared
similar actions rather than being unalike. For example, Eliza says in the final act of the play that
Pickering treats a flower girl as if she was a duchess (Shaw, 1916,
PYGMALION AND MY FAIR LADY COMPARISON 4
p.g. 83). Therefore, throughout both Pickering was always very respectful to Eliza and treated her how
any woman would want to be treated. On the other hand, Higgins did not treat Eliza with the respect
she thought that she deserved and this made her angry in both the film and the play. When she realizes
this completely in the play she tells him So you are a motor bus: all bounce and go, and no

Examples Of Dualism In Star Trek
In the Star Trek episode that was viewed, it turns into a question if Data should have the authority to
choose if he can be knocked down as an approach for his friends to learn more about him. Maddox
signals Data on it and has a disagreement that the technology perhaps is used to establish a force of
androids that would support their search farther. Everybody who sees this episode realizes that Data
appears and operates like a natural and ordinary human. A dualism aspect is presented when Captain
Picard mentions that he thinks that Data has the option to say no to being disassembled. According to
Hasker (1983), Dualism begins by taking quite seriously that human beings have both physical
properties and mental properties (Husker, 1983). He continues by observing that this is opposed to
other assumptions like that of idealism and behaviorism which weaken the two together into one.
(Hasker, 1983). Dualism is made clear more when Hasker states that, physical properties are
properties of the body, while mental properties are properties of the mind, (Hasker, 1983). Picard

Materialism does not deny that humans have both mental and physical attributes but says that both are

thought processes (p. 70). Knowing this is what Maddox uses to deny that Data even has a soul, he
believes that Data is the property of Starfleet and can be used as they see fit. This means that Data
does not have free will and therefore does not have the right to refuse being disassembled and cannot
quit from Starfleet. It is said in the chapter by Maddox and Commander Riker that Data is just a group

platforms such as television and radio and which of the two is more likely to have an influence on us

This is all without looking into a news corporations agenda, political stance and reliability.
It s difficult to say whether citizens are more likely to be influenced more by the news they receive on
either social media or on television. A lot of the younger generations are likely to say social media is
more influential, whilst many of the older generations who aren t as, or at all active on social media
would claim broadcast is their most trusted source of information. In his book News and Journalism in
the UK: Fifth Edition, McNair shows that a report commissioned by Channel 4 in 2008 noted that TV
remains the most popular source of news across the British public as a whole. By then, 54 percent of
the 25 34 age group were using online journalism regularly, and the trend was clear further
fragmentation of the journalism market, further migration of audiences from print and broadcast to
online, with young media user moving furthest and fastest. (McNair, 2009, P.142). In earlier editions
of his book, another survey was conducted and people still listed television as their most trusted
source. This correlates with my point earlier, while television may well be the more trusted source,
younger citizens reading the news are likely to be influenced more by what they re reading online and

Reflection Of Michelangelo In Pieta
Be that as it may be, when applying this guidance to his works he used it as leverage in order to
illustrate, a sensual response to this aesthetic. Michelangelo in Pieta helps us to see through his eyes,
the struggle between Platonic ideals and carnal desire in his sculpture when focusing more detail on
the attributions of a male phasic rather than that of females. Additionally, he is primarily known for his
work depicting, mannerism, a deliberately stylized form of sophisticated art, in which the human body
is idealized. For instance, we see this when we draw our attention towards the increasingly large size
of The Virgin Mary compared to that of her son Christ who lays in her arms. Through this sculpture of
the Pieta, Michelangelo tells the story of how Mary s son Christ died for his religious beliefs and
really focuses on the relationship between Christ and his mother Mary. Coupled with the sculptures
symbolic intent of sacrifice for faith through, the way the Virgin Mary s hand is extended outward and
facing up is her saying this is the path to salvation and this is God s sacrifice for mankind, my sacrifice
of my son that makes possible your redemption. Although this may be true we don t see much of this
today. While back in the Renaissance many people had to make sacrifices whether it was through
death or through other means for their religious faiths. At the same time with these sacrifices came
along rebirths ironically being in the same era of the

Sidney Bechet Impact On Jazz
From Bechet to Marsalis: The Evolution of Jazz
Jazz: An overview
In the 20th century, Jazz was one of the most expressive forms of music around, as it was just starting
out and was born in a time where victims of oppression were beginning to stand up and rebel. In
comparison to classical music, Jazz is a very new genre of music. It s evolution is vividly evident in it
s contrast of instrumentation, dynamics, and the introduction of modal jazz which I will discuss later
on in this essay. One of the first jazz virtuoso s that appeared and had a significant influence on jazz,
was Sidney Bechet, on clarinet and saxophone.

With this popularity, jazz musicians decided to form larger ensembles, known as Big Bands . These
big bands would typically consist of trumpets, saxophones, trombones, drums, bass (or double bass),
piano and would usually have a soloist. These bands were like the symphony orchestras of jazz. A few
of the most popular big bands would ve been led by Chick Webb, Paul Whiteman, Glenn Miller, Ted
Lewis and an all female big band named Helen Lewis and her all girl jazz syncopaters . The popularity
of these groups was astounding. They were selling out venues everywhere and going on regular tours
across America. These bands would have some impeccably skilled jazz musicians as soloist s also
such as Bix Beiderbecke and Dizzy Gillespie. One big band that stood out from this era would be
Benny Goodman s big band. Their popularity was almost unbelievable. Benny himself was widely
known as the King of Swing and had some of the most dedicated fans at the time. Radio was the most
important aspect for Benny as his recordings would be heard by a wider audience. This ultimately led
to the crazy fan base he gained. For example, in their performance at the Stanley Theatre, it was
reported that most of the audience were dancing down the aisles to the music. People had never
experienced music like this before. It was almost like an explosion of life and freedom, caused by a
wave of new and exciting music. Goodman s performance at

The Human Condition Short Story Assignment
The Human Condition Short Story Assignment Firstly, what is the human condition? I ve been
searching for an answer about what the human condition really means. In different situations,
especially in the six stories I was asked to read, I put myself in the very different situations of each
story and what I ve found is that the human condition is the characteristics or key events and situations
that compose the essentials of human existence or the positive and negative aspects of being a human
being. It is part of being a person. For example the need to be loved is simply part of the human
condition. Such as birth, growth, emotions, aspirations, conflicts, and mortality. It is the experiences,
emotions and the needs that all people share, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her kindness changes the rattrap peddlers thoughts about the world being one big rat trap. I can relate
to this because I am a very caring, compassionate person and can understand the struggle this poor
man went though. He turned out to be a good man at heart and returned money he had stolen from the
old retired ironworker. This reminds me of the saying You can never judge a book by it s cover . When
the peddler knocked on the old man s door dressed in rags with sunken cheek, he was surprised when

old man was kind to him and gave him food and tobacco but the peddler ended up stealing the old
mans 30 kronos anyway. Most people would have just slammed the door in his face but this old man
didn t. This is part of the human condition, having compassion and helping those less fortunate than
us. The peddler stealing is also part of the human condition because he chose to steal even though the
old man showed him kindness. In What Men Live by by Leo Tolstoy, I feel sympathetic for the little

A tidal salt marsh is a community of plants and animals that thrive in wet saline conditions (ADBC,
2010), which rely on the tides to bring nutrients, such as oxygen, nitrogen, and phosphorous. As the
tide leaves the wetlands, pools are exposed which shorebirds can feed on larvae without competition
from fish that was impossible during the time period of water diversion and dam construction. The
land became baron; an area of waste land, until 1967, when the water originally diverted for irrigation
of fields, was redirected to the lowland area. In 2006, a tidal inlet was successfully opened after 107
years, allowing the tide to flow to various parts of the wetlands which had previously been closed off
(ADBC, 2010).
During the process of Bolsa Chica environmental change, much has been learned about ecosystem
destruction and restoration. Wetland areas are as Wright states among the most productive ecosystems

Essay on The Failure of James Buchanan
In 1856, a Presidential election occurred in the United States at a crucial period. Sectionalism was at
an all time high and a leader was needed to unite the country. However, the man who won the election
did not prove to be this leader. Instead, his platform was based on a deliberate failure to lead. Due to
James Buchanan s position that supported popular sovereignty in the expanding United States, the
country divided even further over the topic of slavery to the point that the Civil War became
inevitable.
One of Buchanan s most significant failures came in regards to the Dred Scott case. Although he had
good intentions in how he wanted to handle this case, he did a terrible job. Phillip Auchampaugh
describes this by stating, His desire ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since the decision did not occur until two days after Buchanan s inaugural address, this address would
be a good place to look to discover how much Buchanan actually knew. In the address, he states, To
their decision, in common with all good citizens, I shall cheerfully submit (Buchanan Inaugural
Address ). Here, Buchanan shows that he is willing to abide by whatever decision the Supreme Court
comes to. However, it can be inferred that he knows what the outcome will be. He goes on to state,
though it has ever been my individual opinion that under the Nebraska Kansas act the appropriate
period will be when the number of actual residents in the Territory shall justify the formation of a
constitution with a view to its admission as a State into the Union (Buchanan Inaugural Address ).
Basically, he is revealing his opinion that the Kansas Nebraska act, or as he refers to it, the Nebraska
Kansas act, has already made this decision clear that popular sovereignty is what will govern the
territories instead of congressional jurisdiction. A President would not give their opinion on such an
important decision before it occurs unless they already knew what the outcome of the case was going
to be. So, through Buchanan s correspondence with Supreme Court Justices, his Inaugural address,
and desire to keep the Union together, it can be inferred that he knew the outcome of the Dred Scott
decision before it actually occurred. All this is irresponsible because a President Elect

Modernist Styles, Including Cubism, Orphism, and Futurism...
Modernist styles, including Cubism, Orphism, and Futurism challenged the practices of traditional

I will argue that modernist styles including Cubism, Orphism and Futurism did challenge the practices
of traditional representational art. While some may argue that that the fact that modern styles were
concerned with subject gives doubt to how challenging they really were to representational art I
oppose this idea entirely. All art is representational in some way. Rather than a dismissing the concept
of representation in art the modernist styles challenged the validity of the external representation,
which had previously been the foundation of art, by focussing on conceptual representation.

Initially the search for a new, more truthful pictorial space was found in the introduction of time, the
fourth dimension, into space. Around this time in history the concept that space and time where
interlinked was suggested by Einstein s theory of relativity which destroyed the concept that the
dimensions of an object were absolute, by demonstrating that they depended on the relative position of
the viewer. This abstract concept was portrayed in Cubism through the use of synthesised impressions
of an image or space. As you view an image or object, your impression is not static but a moving
collection of impressions over time. The use of multiple viewpoints aimed to compress a multiplicity
of information gathered from various experiences of an object into one image.
This innovation of a truer space is most evidently portrayed by the analytic phase of Cubism. Through
the incorporation of the new artistic conventions the fragmentation of form was developed. The
intention was to encompass the entire visual experience of an object into one image and through this
idea an effective technique of breaking up form into planes and facets which each expressed a sample
of visual information. The Cubist works now possessed a shallow pictorial space due to the
abandonment of perspective on which these

American Jacques Rousseau Women
ean Jacques Rousseau, an eighteenth century French philosopher, was the only Enlightenment thinker
that wrote two social contract theories. In each of Rousseau s narratives, he completely disregards
women. Throughout all of Rousseau s work, but Emile in particular, he emphasizes women as passive
agents in the world. In Pacha Mama, Rousseau, and the Femini, Nalinia Persram, a contemporary
philosopher, argues that women s superiority extends from the private sphere extends into the public
sphere. (236) Women are only superior as long as they maintain control of nature and nurture. (237)

In this work, he traces Emile from birth to adulthood in order to explain that education comes from
nature, experience, and others. In Book V, Rousseau uses Sophy to explain how to educate women,
who he believes do not have the same rational capacity as men. Rousseau states, The man should be
strong and active; the woman should be weak and passive. (2) Rousseau endorsed patriarchal societies
which deemed women incompetent, weak, and in need of protection. Men only depend on women
because they want women, whereas women need and want men. In Rousseau s understanding, women
are not created as equal to men. Instead, women serve as the resources of men; therefore, females are
taught only how to serve men. (2) In this social structure, women s statuses depended on men; women
were the property of their fathers and husbands. Rousseau confines women to traditional gender norms
by creating a separate education system for men and

The Mill On The Floss
In George Eliot s The Mill on the Floss, one of the long, resounding themes of the novel is the nature
of love and how it changes people over time. While a loving nature is generally regarded as a noble if
not redeemable trait in literary characters, especially in Victorian literature where the idea of marrying
for love was gaining popularity, protagonist Maggie Tulliver subverted that idea. It was because of
Maggie s all consuming familial love for her brother Tom, platonic love for Philip, and romantic love
for Stephen that directly caused her ultimate downfall and death.
At the heart of the novel, Maggie s relationship with her older brother Tom was without a doubt the
most important in her life. The two were incredibly close as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

To be fair, Tom was a child who had just found out his pets were killed, so it s understandable that he
would be angry and lash out. However, this was the first of many times throughout the novel that
Maggie displease Tom in some way, be swiftly and harshly punished for it, and return to Tom
wholeheartedly whenever it suited him to apologize.
The next time that the two siblings fought was the infamous pastry debacle, in which Tom had stolen
two pastries for them to share and let Maggie decide who would get the bigger one. Maggie insisted
that he take the bigger pastry, but Tom countered by telling her it was alright for her to take it. He then
seethed in anger as they ate together when she did indeed take the prefered pastry and he called her
greedy. Tom s motivations for doing this are never made entirely clear. Was it a trick question? Was he
testing Maggie to see if she would still put him first even when he said not to? But that was the trick,
that she thought she was being respectful and putting Tom first by taking his permission to accept the
larger pastry for herself. Maggie could never seem to win with Tom because of his strange logic and
sense of justice, and their strained relationship finally boiled over in childhood when she ran away to
live with gypsies anything to not have to deal with Tom s disappointingly on again, off again

The Ethics Of Gestational Surrogacy
Perhaps one of the greatest human desires is to create and love a child. There are those who, by nature,
do not possess such personal aspiration, seeking preventative measures to avoid conception. Then
there are those thrilled to take on the role of parent, whether or not pregnancy fit into the initial plan.
Still there are those who long for a tiny biological life, which cannot be traditionally conceived or
carried to term due to a failure of mechanisms within the body beyond the control of the intended
parents. Such problematic infertility issues have prompted would be parents to turn to surrogacy
arrangements to acquire a gestational surrogate, a woman who would consent to implantation and of a

In an article from Ohio State University, research was done to show that 64 percent of college students

for this would be that students need to be able to have the jobs that they majored in help pay towards
their debt. In the article The Unspoken Cause of the Student Loan Crisis Walia explains that if
students are not majoring in the jobs that allow students to begin working immediately and start to pay
off the loan, it is going to be hard for students to get out of the debt and work towards buying a home,
car, and paying for other living things that students need. If the students major does not provide a good
way of making money, it will be harder to repay the loan. In the article Walia states that Engineers are
very likely to be hired right out of college, to command premium salaries and to see their incomes

Transcendentalism Of Ralph Shildo Emerson And Ralph Waldo...
Transcendentalism was a movement that took place in the nineteenth century. The movement was
mainly literary, with people s writings becoming different. Stating that a new era was at hand . The
movement was centered around other authors, but Ralph Waldo Emerson was a famous author. He
was considered the leader of the movem Emerson s role was being the critic for young thinkers with
idealistic frustration about those who would conform. His writings would describe that conform to
society s ideas were bad and people should do their own thing. For Emerson, he had beliefs that
transcendentalism was a project. SOmething that was impossible to practice. He saw it more of
something that you just do. The only way to have a friend is to be one. In life having friends can show
their worth. Not everyone wants to be alone. And for those who do not want to be alone, it shows its
value to be kind and a friend to someone just to have one for themselves. Showing loyalty and
kindness towards another shows a friend you care. Thus having them in turn be able to turn into

The Structural Framework Of Letter
When observing the structural framework of Letter to Romans, chapters nine through eleven are a
distinctive unit because of the central focus on God s inclusion of salvation for all. Awkward sentence
structure. Prior to chapters nine through eleven, Paul verbally confronts individually within his
religious heritage for justifying their faith through their works to God s promise rather by grace
through faith. Chapters (7 8) explore the importance of tying the law with the gospel in order to live a
righteous yet difficult life. Within these chapters, Paul continually berates the Jews for their rejection
of Christ and for their faith justified by good works. However, Paul shifts his focus from the jews to

This scriptural passage is connected to preceding sections by using a transitional phrase So that you
(v.25). This corresponds to the transitional phrase of the preceding section on the salvation of the
gentiles, So I ask, (thesis points to previou section) Awkward sentence construction (v.11) One could
interpret this use of transitional phrases as a series of points stemming from the main argument that
Israel is still God s elect and will attain salvation through the Gentiles according to God s plan. Within
this text, an important conceptual link is this emphasis on all of Israel . The Elijah narrative in the
beginning of chapter 11, portrays God granting mercy on the people of Israel even though they have
persecuted his prophets and desecrated the altars of God s temple. However, those who are shown
mercy are those 7,000 people who have not worshipped Baal. Paul expands upon this by stating that
So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace. (v.5) The remanent pertains to the
Jewish Christians of Paul s time. However, two sections later, Paul makes an argument that all of
Israel, even those who have disobeyed God, will attain salvation and mercy.
The NRSV presents two textual problems for this scriptural passage. In verse 28, the word God was
not originally in the sentence, therefore the line is

The World Of The Classical Solar System
Last July, NASA s New Horizons spacecraft flew by Pluto, the last unvisited world of the classical
solar system. As the largest known member of the Kuiper belt, Pluto is also the gateway to a new
frontier, a scarcely studied collection of primordial icy bodies far from the sun that constitutes the
third zone of the solar system after the realms of the inner rocky planets and the outer gas giants.
Like most first glimpses of new frontiers, Pluto held so many surprises for New Horizons that the past
eight months have seen a steady stream of discoveries coming from the mission, as the spacecraft s
small radio transmitter beams its gathered data back home. The biggest surprises have been Pluto s
surface and atmosphere, which are restlessly active and diverse despite average temperatures of only
tens of degrees above absolute zero. Some scientists expected New Horizons would find Pluto to be
little more than an inert, sunlight starved orb. Instead, the spacecraft encountered a world where
nitrogen glaciers flow down into plains of frozen methane from towering mountains of water ice.
Sunless half frozen oceans lurk deep beneath the surface, and multiple moons tumble overhead
through hydrocarbon hazed red skies that tinge to blue at sunrise and sunset.
But beyond celebrating the visceral thrill of the Pluto flyby itself, or the intellectual frisson of gazing
on full color close ups of a place so alien and faraway, most of these discoveries from New Horizons

Positive Aspects Of Legalizing Prostitution
I am writing in response to Peyton Jefferson s question: when thinking about how the Netherlands
decided to legalize prostitution, what pros do you think could have come from that strategy? Although
I am against legalizing prostitution, and think it shouldn t even exist, I can see how legalizing it could
bring about some positive aspects. Theoretically, there are many positive aspects of legalizing
prostitution. For starters, legalization could protect women from abuse and violence by giving them
rights that enable them to speak up. When women have these rights, they feel they can go to the police
if they are facing abuse from their pimps. There are many reasons they wouldn t before because of the
legal reasons. There is fear of what consequences ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, that s not the case. Prostitution is one of the most dangerous business out there, even after
legalization women still experienced abuse, but were still too scared to speak out about it. Now that
prostitution was legal, the sex industry was on a rise. Demands for prostitutes increased, which
resulted in women and minors being imported from other places to fulfill the demand. Sex trafficking
was already a problem before, now they ve just made the matter worse. I would go as far to say that it
was encouraged, because now it s a legal business. What most are forgetting is this business is filled
with greedy criminals looking for the most profit. This leads to women and children being exploited,
and problems are only growing.
Sure, in theory, there are pros to legalizing prostitution. Seeing as how it was done before in the
Netherlands, we can also see how those pros don t always add up. There is no solution to the problems
associated with prostitution and sex trafficking. Legalizing prostitution only increases the growing
problems in the sex industry. In conclusion, I can see the theoretical pros of legalization, but I cannot
overlook the negative outcome it produces. I will stand firm in my belief that any form of sex for
money is wrong, and that we need to work towards a future where it is

The Fetishism of Coffee in America Essay
There are many essentials that are fetishized by Americans; one of those things is coffee. It is no secret
that there is a big demand for coffee with many specialty coffee shops springing up, such as
Starbucks, Peet s and Coffee Bean. Oftentimes, the consumer loses sight of where things come from
and how they are produced. A key component of production is the producer. The consumer does not
pay enough attention to the ethical treatment and wages of the producer. This paper discusses Karl
Marx s premise on Fetishism of Commodities and its direct relation to the production of coffee,
focusing on the value of the coffee bean as well as how that directly impacts the farmer and his family.

He states that material essentials have use value. A thing will have use value because it becomes a
commodity and is produced for others. The price of a use value item is not determined by how useful
but what the thing does and how frequently it is used (Marx in Desfor Edles and Appelrouth 2012:65,
69). As a material essential s use value grows it becomes more desired Marx believes that it becomes a
fetishized commodity. Marx restructured his earlier theory of alienation as fetishism of commodities.
Fetishism is similar to alienation; however the premise of consumerism is developed in the way that
the consumer loses sight of the labor it takes to create commodities. To the consumer, commodities are
magnificent and allow the material item to take control of their lives. This is allowed to happen
because the producers of material commodities do not come into contact with one another. Therefore,
there is no thought put into how laborious, and time consuming, it was to create the commodity (Marx
in Desfor Edles and Appelrouth 2012:68, 73). It is evident that there are many things being fetishized
in present day. Specialty coffee has been become increasingly popular since the 1980 s. As of 2001 27
million Americans consumed specialty coffee daily (Ponte 2002:1111). It can be said that Starbucks
helped create the explosion and set the environment that it drew with

Analysis of The Inmortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by...
The novel, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot is divided into 3 sections: life,
which tells the reader about Henrietta s life and the birth of HeLa; death, which consists of times after
Henrietta s death, and lastly; immortality, which discusses how Henrietta s cells have become
immortal. Overall, the book is based on Henrietta and the lives of her children and how they cope with
the way medical science has treated their mother. Though the book is not written in chronological
order, Skloot does a good job of organizing her information according to its section.
The first section, life, tells the reader about the beginning of HeLa. Henrietta s symptoms began
shortly after the birth of her fourth child, Deborah. Henrietta ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

George told a few of his closest colleagues that he thought his lab might have grown the first immortal
human cells. To which they replied, Can I have some? And George said yes (Skloot 41). Sadly,
Henrietta would never know of the exciting history her cells would soon be making. She passed away
on October 4, 1951 of cervical cancer. She was thirty one years old.
The next section, death, shows how HeLa helped prevent premature death due to certain diseases,
including polio. In 1951, the world saw the biggest polio, epidemic in history. In 1952, a man named
Jonas Salk announced he had found a cure for polio but there was one problem; he needed to test it on
a large scale before offering it to children. However, to do that he would need culturing cells on an
enormous, industrial scale, which no one had done before (Skloot 93). The NFIP (National Foundation
for Infantile Paralysis) began organizing the largest field trial ever conducted to test the polio vaccine
(Skloot 93). The cells used in neutralization tests came from monkeys, which were very expensive at
the time, so the NFIP turned to expert cell culturists, including George Gey, who realized HeLa was
unlike any human cells he had seen. As long as HeLa was susceptible to polio, the mass production
problem would be solved and it would be cheaper for the NFIP. In April 1952, William Scherer tried
infecting HeLa with the poliovirus and found it is even more susceptible to

Unit 7 Deuteronomy 6
Unit #7 Biblical Reflection
In Deuteronomy 6, Moses reminded the people of Israel about all that the Lord had and would
continue to do for them. He also reminded them that the Lord is the only true God, and He demands
complete devotion from His people. If the Israelites obeyed the commands of the Lord, He would
cause life to ...go well with you..., and the Israelites would ...increase greatly in a land flowing with
milk and honey... (Deut. 6:3). However, the Lord would punish disobedience with disaster. Thus,
Moses described the Lord as gracious and benevolent, but He is also the rightful ruler and judge of all
peoples. He alone is God, and He demands to be worshipped as such. Over one thousand years later,
the apostle Paul discussed some of the same attributes of God in his letter to the Corinthians.
Specifically, in the first few verses of chapter 8, Paul discussed the authority of the Lord as the one
true God, and he declared that ...whoever loves God is known by God (1 Corinth. 8:3). Interestingly,
in Paul s brief discussion of the authority of God, he referenced and expounded upon the Shema,
which Moses had initially declared in Deuteronomy 6. The Shema proclaims Hear, O Israel: The Lord
our God, the Lord is one (Deut. 6:4). Paul further explained that There is no God but one (1 Corinth.
8:4b), but the one true ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moreover, an understanding of the various roles of the Godhead also provides comfort as we serve
God in our individual lives. For example, knowing that the Spirit is our permanent, always present
guide and comforter is a tremendous encouragement. A proper view of the Trinity is also critical as we
share the Gospel with others: because the doctrine of the Trinity informs our worship, we must be able
to articulate this doctrine to others so that they can rightly relate to and worship our triune

An immense amount of engineering has been taking place on the COP since I have arrived. A recent
addition of new hard body sleeping quarters brought in to replace the current tents being utilized as
sleeping quarters. Rumor has it that soldiers could be moving into them as soon as the end of the
week. The vast majority of the buildings have already erected and awaiting furniture installation;
effects such as bunk beds and desks. Another innovating development taking place on the COP is the
implementation of wireless internet being installed into all the rooms, in addition to expanding on the
current MWR* internet and phone services. With the addition of five more computers, and phones
there already, that will give the COP a total of ten each. A bigger laundry facility is in the works also,

As of current they are out in sector conducting a forty eight hour mission. My first mission with this
platoon will be with a group of complete strangers to me. As a leader I have the capabilities to lead
any soldier anywhere, anytime, as well as the soldiers being able to follow the directions of any leader.
One of the reasons the Army is as transverse as that fact. The more I m able to acquaint myself with
the Soldiers, the more accustom I will become with how each member of the group works. Within a
diminutive time everyone will be in sync and working like a finely tuned machine of death. My
platoon will be coming back to the COP tonight for their twenty four hours down time. The first
interaction with the platoon will be in force protection; this encompasses the manning the three guard
tower positions operated by US soldiers. It is a little daunting jumping into things here, not actually
knowing much about anything. The other squad leaders helped me out by showing me the ropes; it

The Third Artefact For My Portfolio
The third artefact for my portfolio was Assignment 3 in course Mdde 605, titled: Globe Driving
Academy Business Plan. Its purpose was to identify a business structure from the strategic plan and
multi year strategic goals and to reflect the potential for growth. Students were expected to include
financial plans and a balanced scorecard reflecting and measuring an organization s success. This 43
page document covered everything from Business visions, motivation product services, marketing
schemes, governance process, to the Financial Plan for a for profit company which was going to
implement e learning as the next major step to stand out in the industry. Competencies and Reflection
The assignment itself was lengthy and took me a very long time to complete it. Not having a
background in business the most challenging part was doing research on a projected financial plan. It
was with a help of a charted accountant that I was able to accomplish this with actual numbers from
my workplace so all the information is based on true numbers. He taught me how to gather
information on company s projected sales, factors contributing to losses, projected profit, and
comparing with actual profit. This way, it is possible to predict of it is worth investing before investing
and starting new projects in the company. In the end, I was pleased with the final product despite the
frustration of reading multiple business plans, tackling the numbers and understating the swot

Theme Of Death In King Lear
Of the deaths in Shakespeare s King Lear, the death of Cordelia and King Lear at the end of Act V are
most significant in revealing the development of Lear and how his development contributes to the
theme surrounding it. The dynamic King Lear is a tragic hero whose fatal flaw, arrogance, prompts his
removal from power and eventually the death of both himself and Cordelia. However, by the time of
King Lear s death, his arrogance has been replaced with a compassion which allows him to mourn the
death of Cordelia and die from his own grief. Besides redeeming himself for his flawed judgement,
the compassionate King Lear of Act V recognizes the loyalty in characters like Kent and Cordelia,
while also seeing through the dishonesty of Regan and Goneril which fools the King Lear of Act I.
King Lear s transition from disowning Cordelia because of his arrogance to recognizing her as his
only faithful daughter is demonstrated through Lear s death, which serves as the culmination of his
development and a reversal of his character. Furthermore, his death elaborates the theme of how
someone s arrogance may blind them from the reality of others intentions, which can be seen through
a more compassionate and humble lens. In King Lear, Lear s conflict of power with his daughters is
brought about by his own arrogance, which flaws his judgement and propels his change of heart.
When Lear parcels out his kingdom to his daughters, he finds the honesty of Cordelia s praise to be
ungrateful and

Most individuals do not believe that there are any benefits or positives from being Deaf, nor do they believe that a Deaf individual will ever be able to live a happy and fulfilled life. However, Deaf individuals do not view themselves as disabled nor do they view their lives lacking anything, rather they view their Deafness as a gain. The song Michelle was recorded in November of 1965 and released to the public the following month written and performed by John Lennon and Sir Paul McCartney, once performed by Sir Paul McCartney at the White House for the entertainment of President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama. Considering both instances in the two sources, the commentary they make of the male s initial emotional response to romantic emotion evoked by a strong attraction to a female suggests a largely verbal and dramaticized response, often toward appearance first. In the song Michelle, the narrator relies only verbal expression. He sings, Sont les mots qui vont très bien ensemble... I will say the only words I know that you ll understand (Doc. 1). This shows that the narrator makes extra effort to verbally communicate with the woman, suggesting he does this because he feels he must, as he sees no other ways of communication. Romeo, in Shakespeare s The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, is dramatic in his portrayal of Juliet. He declares, O, she doth teaches the torches to burn bright! (Romeo and Juliet. 1.5.44). This demonstrates his dramaticity through the use of metaphor, as Juliet does not teach torches to emit light, but rather she appears to emit more light than a torch in Romeo s perspective, which is an overstatement in this case. Romeo also makes much commentary on Juliet s appearance. He exclaims, Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear! ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In my workplace, employees are able to connect with colleagues through internal social media and instant messaging (IM) tools. The social media chat tool affords employees (globally) to connect and discuss topics such as proposal support, employees with special skillsets, training interest, online tutorial sessions (i.e., updating resumes, corporate management seminars), shared information obtained at conferences and/or technology presentations, global engineering industry news, and individual and team awards and recognition. Although a separate application, messages generated through the social media tool are displayed in the company s email inbox. The IM feature is very beneficial because employees can simultaneously review a document or spreadsheet and communicate/provide input to one another via online IM, instead of over speakerphone which can be very distracting for employees operating in a cube farm type environment (common practice within the industry). To date, I have not viewed the internal social media and instant messaging (IM) tools as obstacles; however, my email inbox gets very populated by the numerous social media messages from employees who are sharing information or requesting support.. Except for one course in economics that he took as an undergraduate, Nash had not any formal training in economics. John Nash had a Ph.D. in mathematics in 1950, but the Nobel Prize he received four decades later was for the contribution he made to game theory in his 1950 Ph.D. thesis. In his work, he introduced the distinction between cooperative and non cooperative games. In non cooperative games every player is self enforced, and in cooperative games, players can make agreements with other players. Nash s contribution is the concept of equilibrium for non cooperative games, which later came to be called a Nash equilibrium. In Nash equilibrium no player can improve his position by choosing a different strategy. Nash explained that as long as mixed strategies are allowed, for a broad class of games, at least one equilibrium exist. Another Nash s contribution is his reasoning about the bargaining problem, before Nash, economist thought the share of gains each of two parties to a bargain received was always indeterminate. Although I struggled with this as well since I tried to apply some of my Spanish literacy knowledge when writing English. Once I began writing reading helped and made some words familiar. A key moment in learning English was writing words just as my ears heard them, I remember my mother saying that was how one wrote in Spanish. Advocates argue that new stadiums spur so much economic growth that they are self financing: subsidies are offset by revenues from ticket taxes, sales taxes on concessions and other spending outside the stadium, and property tax increases arising from the stadium s economic impact. Throughout this essay I have selected to focus on the difference of news we see on social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter to what we re being presented with on traditional media platforms such as television and radio and which of the two is more likely to have an influence on us as citizens who are consuming the news. I will discuss the role of both platforms mentioned earlier and how they have had an influence on the public thus far and how they differ on the deliverance of news and which is more credible. I will also talk about which has the most influence over citizens ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is all without looking into a news corporations agenda, political stance and reliability. It s difficult to say whether citizens are more likely to be influenced more by the news they receive on either social media or on television. A lot of the younger generations are likely to say social media is more influential, whilst many of the older generations who aren t as, or at all active on social media would claim broadcast is their most trusted source of information. In his book News and Journalism in the UK: Fifth Edition, McNair shows that a report commissioned by Channel 4 in 2008 noted that TV remains the most popular source of news across the British public as a whole. By then, 54 percent of the 25 34 age group were using online journalism regularly, and the trend was clear further fragmentation of the journalism market, further migration of audiences from print and broadcast to online, with young media user moving furthest and fastest. (McNair, 2009, P.142). In earlier editions of his book, another survey was conducted and people still listed television as their most trusted source. This correlates with my point earlier, while television may well be the more trusted source, younger citizens reading the news are likely to be influenced more by what they re reading online and on social media ... Michelangelo in Pieta helps us to see through his eyes, the struggle between Platonic ideals and carnal desire in his sculpture when focusing more detail on the attributions of a male phasic rather than that of females. Additionally, he is primarily known for his work depicting, mannerism, a deliberately stylized form of sophisticated art, in which the human body is idealized. For instance, we see this when we draw our attention towards the increasingly large size of The Virgin Mary compared to that of her son Christ who lays in her arms. Through this sculpture of the Pieta, Michelangelo tells the story of how Mary s son Christ died for his religious beliefs and really focuses on the relationship between Christ and his mother Mary. Coupled with the sculptures symbolic intent of sacrifice for faith through, the way the Virgin Mary s hand is extended outward and facing up is her saying this is the path to salvation and this is God s sacrifice for mankind, my sacrifice of my son that makes possible your redemption. Although this may be true we don t see much of this today. While back in the Renaissance many people had to make sacrifices whether it was through death or through other means for their religious faiths. Sidney Bechet Impact On Jazz From Bechet to Marsalis: The Evolution of Jazz Jazz: An overview In the 20th century, Jazz was one of the most expressive forms of music around, as it was just starting out and was born in a time where victims of oppression were beginning to stand up and rebel. In comparison to classical music, Jazz is a very new genre of music. It s evolution is vividly evident in it s contrast of instrumentation, dynamics, and the introduction of modal jazz which I will discuss later on in this essay. One of the first jazz virtuoso s that appeared and had a significant influence on jazz, was Sidney Bechet, on clarinet and saxophone. 20th Century New Orleans Sidney Bechet (1897 1959) Born into a middle class family in New Orleans, Louisiana, ... A few of the most popular big bands would ve been led by Chick Webb, Paul Whiteman, Glenn Miller, Ted Lewis and an all female big band named Helen Lewis and her all girl jazz syncopaters . The popularity of these groups was astounding. They were selling out venues everywhere and going on regular tours across America. These bands would have some impeccably skilled jazz musicians as soloist s also such as Bix Beiderbecke and Dizzy Gillespie. One big band that stood out from this era would be Benny Goodman s big band. Their popularity was almost unbelievable. Benny himself was widely known as the King of Swing and had some of the most dedicated fans at the time. Radio was the most important aspect for Benny as his recordings would be heard by a wider audience. This ultimately led to the crazy fan base he gained. For example, in their performance at the Stanley Theatre, it was reported that most of the audience were dancing down the aisles to the music. People had never experienced music like this before. I ve been searching for an answer about what the human condition really means. In different situations, especially in the six stories I was asked to read, I put myself in the very different situations of each story and what I ve found is that the human condition is the characteristics or key events and situations that compose the essentials of human existence or the positive and negative aspects of being a human being. It is part of being a person. For example the need to be loved is simply part of the human condition. Such as birth, growth, emotions, aspirations, conflicts, and mortality. The land became baron; an area of waste land, until 1967, when the water originally diverted for irrigation of fields, was redirected to the lowland area. Sectionalism was at an all time high and a leader was needed to unite the country. However, the man who won the election did not prove to be this leader. Instead, his platform was based on a deliberate failure to lead. Due to James Buchanan s position that supported popular sovereignty in the expanding United States, the country divided even further over the topic of slavery to the point that the Civil War became inevitable. One of Buchanan s most significant failures came in regards to the Dred Scott case. Although he had good intentions in how he wanted to handle this case, he did a terrible job. Here, Buchanan shows that he is willing to abide by whatever decision the Supreme Court comes to. However, it can be inferred that he knows what the outcome will be. He goes on to state, though it has ever been my individual opinion that under the Nebraska Kansas act the appropriate period will be when the number of actual residents in the Territory shall justify the formation of a constitution with a view to its admission as a State into the Union (Buchanan Inaugural Address ). Basically, he is revealing his opinion that the Kansas Nebraska act, or as he refers to it, the Nebraska Kansas act, has already made this decision clear that popular sovereignty is what will govern the territories instead of congressional jurisdiction. A President would not give their opinion on such an important decision before it occurs unless they already knew what the outcome of the case was going to be. Around this time in history the concept that space and time where interlinked was suggested by Einstein s theory of relativity which destroyed the concept that the dimensions of an object were absolute, by demonstrating that they depended on the relative position of the viewer. This abstract concept was portrayed in Cubism through the use of synthesised impressions of an image or space. As you view an image or object, your impression is not static but a moving collection of impressions over time. The use of multiple viewpoints aimed to compress a multiplicity of information gathered from various experiences of an object into one image. This innovation of a truer space is most evidently portrayed by the analytic phase of Cubism. Through the incorporation of the new artistic conventions the fragmentation of form was developed. The intention was to encompass the entire visual experience of an object into one image and through this idea an effective technique of breaking up form into planes and facets which each expressed a sample of visual information. It was because of Maggie s all consuming familial love for her brother Tom, platonic love for Philip, and romantic love for Stephen that directly caused her ultimate downfall and death. The Elijah narrative in the beginning of chapter 11, portrays God granting mercy on the people of Israel even though they have persecuted his prophets and desecrated the altars of God s temple. Sex trafficking was already a problem before, now they ve just made the matter worse. I would go as far to say that it was encouraged, because now it s a legal business. The price of a use value item is not determined by how useful but what the thing does and how frequently it is used (Marx in Desfor Edles and Appelrouth 2012:65, 69). As a material essential s use value grows it becomes more desired Marx believes that it becomes a fetishized commodity. Marx restructured his earlier theory of alienation as fetishism of commodities. Fetishism is similar to alienation; however the premise of consumerism is developed in the way that the consumer loses sight of the labor it takes to create commodities. To the consumer, commodities are magnificent and allow the material item to take control of their lives. This is allowed to happen because the producers of material commodities do not come into contact with one another. Therefore, there is no thought put into how laborious, and time consuming, it was to create the commodity (Marx in Desfor Edles and Appelrouth 2012:68, 73). It is evident that there are many things being fetishized in present day. Specialty coffee has been become increasingly popular since the 1980 s. As of 2001 27 million Americans consumed specialty coffee daily (Ponte 2002:1111). It can be said that Starbucks helped create the explosion and set the environment that it drew with ... • 41. Analysis of The Inmortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by... The novel, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot is divided into 3 sections: life, which tells the reader about Henrietta s life and the birth of HeLa; death, which consists of times after Henrietta s death, and lastly; immortality, which discusses how Henrietta s cells have become immortal. Overall, the book is based on Henrietta and the lives of her children and how they cope with the way medical science has treated their mother. Though the book is not written in chronological order, Skloot does a good job of organizing her information according to its section. The first section, life, tells the reader about the beginning of HeLa. Henrietta s symptoms began shortly after the birth of her fourth child, Deborah. Henrietta ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... George told a few of his closest colleagues that he thought his lab might have grown the first immortal human cells. To which they replied, Can I have some? And George said yes (Skloot 41). Sadly, Henrietta would never know of the exciting history her cells would soon be making. She passed away on October 4, 1951 of cervical cancer. She was thirty one years old. The next section, death, shows how HeLa helped prevent premature death due to certain diseases, including polio. In 1951, the world saw the biggest polio, epidemic in history. In 1952, a man named Jonas Salk announced he had found a cure for polio but there was one problem; he needed to test it on a large scale before offering it to children. However, to do that he would need culturing cells on an enormous, industrial scale, which no one had done before (Skloot 93). The NFIP (National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis) began organizing the largest field trial ever conducted to test the polio vaccine (Skloot 93). The cells used in neutralization tests came from monkeys, which were very expensive at the time, so the NFIP turned to expert cell culturists, including George Gey, who realized HeLa was unlike any human cells he had seen. As long as HeLa was susceptible to polio, the mass production problem would be solved and it would be cheaper for the NFIP. In April 1952, William Scherer tried infecting HeLa with the poliovirus and found it is even more susceptible to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Unit 7 Deuteronomy 6 Unit #7 Biblical Reflection In Deuteronomy 6, Moses reminded the people of Israel about all that the Lord had and would continue to do for them. He also reminded them that the Lord is the only true God, and He demands complete devotion from His people. If the Israelites obeyed the commands of the Lord, He would cause life to ...go well with you..., and the Israelites would ...increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey... (Deut. 6:3). However, the Lord would punish disobedience with disaster. Thus, Moses described the Lord as gracious and benevolent, but He is also the rightful ruler and judge of all peoples. He alone is God, and He demands to be worshipped as such. Over one thousand years later, the apostle Paul discussed some of the same attributes of God in his letter to the Corinthians. Specifically, in the first few verses of chapter 8, Paul discussed the authority of the Lord as the one true God, and he declared that ...whoever loves God is known by God (1 Corinth. 8:3). Interestingly, in Paul s brief discussion of the authority of God, he referenced and expounded upon the Shema, which Moses had initially declared in Deuteronomy 6. The Shema proclaims Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one (Deut. 6:4). Paul further explained that There is no God but one (1 Corinth. 8:4b), but the one true ... For example, knowing that the Spirit is our permanent, always present guide and comforter is a tremendous encouragement. A proper view of the Trinity is also critical as we share the Gospel with others: because the doctrine of the Trinity informs our worship, we must be able to articulate this doctrine to others so that they can rightly relate to and worship our triune ... My first mission with this platoon will be with a group of complete strangers to me. As a leader I have the capabilities to lead any soldier anywhere, anytime, as well as the soldiers being able to follow the directions of any leader. One of the reasons the Army is as transverse as that fact. The more I m able to acquaint myself with the Soldiers, the more accustom I will become with how each member of the group works. Within a diminutive time everyone will be in sync and working like a finely tuned machine of death. My platoon will be coming back to the COP tonight for their twenty four hours down time. The first interaction with the platoon will be in force protection; this encompasses the manning the three guard tower positions operated by US soldiers. • 46. Theme Of Death In King Lear Of the deaths in Shakespeare s King Lear, the death of Cordelia and King Lear at the end of Act V are most significant in revealing the development of Lear and how his development contributes to the theme surrounding it. The dynamic King Lear is a tragic hero whose fatal flaw, arrogance, prompts his removal from power and eventually the death of both himself and Cordelia. However, by the time of King Lear s death, his arrogance has been replaced with a compassion which allows him to mourn the death of Cordelia and die from his own grief. Besides redeeming himself for his flawed judgement, the compassionate King Lear of Act V recognizes the loyalty in characters like Kent and Cordelia, while also seeing through the dishonesty of Regan and Goneril which fools the King Lear of Act I. King Lear s transition from disowning Cordelia because of his arrogance to recognizing her as his only faithful daughter is demonstrated through Lear s death, which serves as the culmination of his development and a reversal of his character. Furthermore, his death elaborates the theme of how someone s arrogance may blind them from the reality of others intentions, which can be seen through a more compassionate and humble lens. In King Lear, Lear s conflict of power with his daughters is brought about by his own arrogance, which flaws his judgement and propels his change of heart. When Lear parcels out his kingdom to his daughters, he finds the honesty of Cordelia s praise to be ungrateful and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
