The story follows Dave, a young black boy in the early 20th century who is seeking independence and to be treated as a man. He believes obtaining a gun will grant him this status and power. However, after accidentally shooting and killing his friend's mule, he realizes owning a gun does not equal maturity and only further limits his freedom. The gun, mule, and Dave's treatment in the fields are symbols of his desire to be seen as an adult but also of the lack of development and responsibility he possesses. The story illustrates how the pursuit of pleasure through dangerous means can have serious unintended consequences.
