Essay on Critique of Hume s Analysis of Causality
Critique of Hume s Analysis of Causality
Hume s analyses of human apprehension and of causality were the most penetrating up to his time
and continue to have great influence. Contemporary Spanish philosopher Xavier Zubiri (1893
1983) has examined both and identified three underlying errors: (1) the failure to recognize that
there are three stages of human intellection, and especially that the first, primordial apprehension,
has quite unique characteristics; (2) the attempt to place an excessive burden on the content of
impressions while ignoring what Zubiri terms their formality of reality ; and (3) the failure to
recognize that functionality, not causality, is the basis for most of our knowledge. Causal chains in
general cannot be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This task Hume undertook in his Treatise of Human Nature, Book I. In Part IV, he is concerned to
establish a reason or explanation for our belief in the independent and continuing existence of
external things or bodies , for upon this all causal reasoning about such things must ultimately rest.
As is well known, Hume argues that such belief must either come from the senses, reason, or what
he terms imagination ; and he dismisses the first two, leaving only the last, where he attributes the
belief to coherence and constancy of impressions. (1)
For the present study, details of Hume s argument are not as important as his basic assumptions.
One of those assumptions, never explicitly stated but always lurking just beneath the surface, is that
all reasoning and understanding of the external world comes from the mind working on the content
of sensible impressions, be they pains, pleasures, colors, or sounds. The burden of inferring the
existence of things outside of the mind then must fall upon the mind and those processes available
to it, because what the senses deliver is inadequate to the task:
That our senses offer not their impressions as the images of something distinct, or independent, and
external, is evident; because they convey to us

Anion Lab Report
Discussion:
Table 1 above illustrated the anions that are taking place within the selected water samples in
which the concentration of the anions is different from one type to other. The anions that present
in the water samples include Cl , F , Br , NO32 and SO42 ; however, no PO43 anion was present in
all samples of water.
First thing to discuss is the concentration of all desired anions in deionized water which was
observed to be (zero ppm) since the dionized water is a type of water that does not contain ions.
The second thing is to compare the concentration of the anions for each type of water to the
regulations designed by Kahramaa.
Figure 3: Concentration of Cl in different types of water with the regulation concentrations in

Introduction of Shingles
If you have had chickenpox during your childhood, it is sure that the virus has stayed in your
system for numerous of years. But the virus has then been reactivated in later life, and that s what
causes the skin disease called Shingles, to develop. As well as chickenpox, there are other diseases
which weakens our immune system. For example, HIV and/or AIDS can also cause Shingles to
develop. Shingles is not considered a life threatening virus, but can become quite painful. Shingles
is an extraordinarily painful condition that involves inflammation of sensory nerves.

Vikings Season 4
Vikings coming for a fouth time by Melissa Wlostoski Vikings season 4 premised on the History
channel on 2/18/2016. In connection with what happened last season, We see the status of
Ragner s health coming into play again and it was not good. His wife ruled his land while he
was away. She doesn t really want to give up her rule of the place. We also see his brother in
Paris where he s living out the deal he was ofter by the king of the city. Which include being
married to his daughter and defending Paris, against the Vikings in exchange for land and a title.
The opening scenes consists of Ragner having some kind of near death vision of where he denied
entrance to Valhalla the Viking afterlife. The vision also shows him having glimpse of his future.

The seer doesn t confirm or deny whether that is going to happen. Ragner does recovery

he doesn t want to deal with things he has to deal with due to him being king. For example,
people betraying him like his brother did once. his brother is officially married to the princess of
Paris. Unfortunately the woman really doesn t want to marry him. There is also a little bit of
time jump that occur as well. Which do not hurt the episode in my opinion. Its not like done in a
way that is awkard or doesn t work for the flow of the plot that is gettng started. I really like the
near death scene that feature Ragner and its showing to him of what is to come. Its just seem to
very cool to me. We also get a little hint of his eldest son starting to fill a prophecy about him
sailing around a sea with no name like the seer said he would to his father. The hint is this young

Persuasive Decisions Arising From The Courts Of Other...
We further find persuasive decisions arising from the courts of other jurisdictions that have, by
an overwhelming majority, refused to endorse the usurpation of the jurisdiction of a court with
concurrent jurisdiction via the failure to permit the matter to be resolved in its original forum.

Examples Of Culture Encounters In One Out Of Many
Culture Encounters in the Short Story one out of Many
By Naipaul s V.S
People actually need to interact effectively and socialize with other people from other cultures.
Nowadays, globalization has opened the doors for people to improve their inter cultural
communication skills. Culture is defined as the system of knowledge shared by a large group of
people and it also refers to behaviors, values and experiences that people learn and passed to
generations Merriam Webster (2010). On the other hand, cultureencounters is a concept used in
modern societies as a result of globalization and immigration. signals our focus on the ways in
which cultures interact, overlap and are transformed by these encounters . Brown. (2008). Naipaul s

He shows that culture encounters is very common in multicultural communities. In order for an
immigrant person like Santosh to fit in a multicultural community, he needs to widen his
experiences and cope with the new society. However, in his struggle to balance between his own
culture and the American culture, he becomes just a one out of many or a mixed character with
mixed cultures in a multicultural community. He belongs neither to the American culture nor to the
culture of Bombay. Consequently, he shuts himself out of the word and chooses to live a solitary
life of isolation and alienation.

It is the responsibility of commanders to ensure that military personnel under their command
present a neat and Marinely appearance. Therefore, in the absence of specific procedures or
guidelines, commanders must determine a Marine s compliance with standards in this regulation.
Marines must take pride in their appearance at all times, in or out of uniform, on and off duty. This
regulation prescribes the authorization for wear, composition, and classification of uniforms, and
the occasions for wearing all personal, (clothing bag issue), optional, and commonly worn
organizational Marine uniforms. It also prescribes the awards, insignia, and accouterments
authorized for wear on the uniform, and how these items are worn. General information is also

is not clean and neat in appearance, and portrays the Marine poorly, the members of the United

Essay On EU Law
Whilst there has been contention to the definition of direct effects, it has generally been explained
to be a principle that bestows upon the individuals of the European Union (hereafter, the EU)
Member State, a right which flows from EU law. This conferring of right would enable an
individual to invoke the provision before the courts. An invention of the Court of Justice of the
European Union(hereafter, the CJEU) and first recognized in Van Gend en Loose , this principle,
therefore, goes to the heart of the supremacy of EU law. The question in Van Gend was whether
Article 12 of the Treaty of Rome allows individuals to enforce the rights against the State. In
acknowledging that the European Community was headed straight for a common... Show more

The basis for this can be found in Article 288 of the Treaty of the Functioning of the European
Union (hereafter, the TFEU), which reiterates this notion.
The wording of Article 288 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (hereafter, the
TFEU) is crystal clear; Directives are addressed to Member States and would have to first be
transposed into national law within the given deadline. However, where the Directive in question
can fulfil the conditions in Van Gend and have expired , they may have a direct effect.
Nevertheless, this direct effect is restricted only to that of a horizontal nature. Marshall disallows
individuals from enforcing a Directive against a private body. Concerns were raised when there
was a call to allow Directives to be horizontally effective. One point of contention was the fact that
Article 288 expressly mentions that Directives are binding upon Member States who were
expressly addressed.
Another argument raised was focused on the distinction between Regulations and Directives. The
transposition process for Directives is what differentiates the two. To take away this ability would
be to blur the demarcation between the two types of secondary EU law sources as they would
both be rendered directly applicable. Despite the criticisms, however, Marshall was affirmed in
Dori a decade later.
Yet, a problem stems from the refusal of having Directives be horizontally effective; claimants are
unable to rely

Differentiating Between Market Structures
A market structure in economics describes the state of a market with respect to its competition.
There exist several different market structures like perfect competition, oligopoly, and
monopolies among others. These markets all produce different types of goods or services, like
public and private goods as well as common and collective goods. Firms operating in these
different market structures utilize the labor market in very different ways because of very diverse
uses of labor in each market structure, so it is important for a firm to use the labor market
equilibrium principles to their advantage ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Different companies operate under different business models and one can see that under some
market forms, firms have no control over price, in others they have the power to adjust price in a
way that adds to its profits. There are different market structures with perfect competition at one end
and pure monopoly at the other. In between are different forms called monopolistic competition
and oligopoly that share some of the characteristics of both perfect competition and a monopoly
competitive structure (Colander, 2013, Chapter 13). Perfect competition exists when products are
homogeneous, and there are many firms too small to have any influence on the market price.
These types of businesses can easily enter and exit the industry. A situation where even one
producer can affect the price of a good by increasing or withholding output is called imperfect
competition. Monopolistic competition exists when many producers of slightly differentiated
products are able to sell them at well above their marginal cost. The core of the argument for
competition is that as long as competition exists in markets no one producer or group of producers
can afford to abuse power by charging too much or by selling bogus goods for fear that consumers
might turn away from them to buy from other producers. In line with that argument one of the
government s tasks is to keep competition alive and functioning. A

Questions On Primary Conversions And Multiples
Table 2 present arrival times of primary conversions and multiples, but it is challenging to see those
multiples in the RFs and look like noise. Additionally, the authors do not use such a long window in
the inversion.
Methodology: The authors try to summarize three different methods, but few statements are not
correct and others give different meaning. They can move Receiver Functions section to the
observations section as those are really the secondary observations obtained using the deconvolution
of seismograms. I present here few examples of problematic statement.
The authors say Gaussian width of 2.5 Hz is applied , but the Gaussian width does not have any
unit. The authors can check Ammon s webpage for more details ... Show more content on

Importantly, this is how we solve the most of the geophysical inverse problem and works well with
some limitations. It is also not clear why the authors do not apply Neighborhood Algorithm (NA)
for the Moho depth and other interfaces.
The authors apply NA, which has two important tuning parameters. Those parameters help to
achieve faster convergence. It is important to note that those parameters depend on the problem, but
the authors never mention how those parameters were tuned and convergence was decided.
The authors also mention that they use 24 parametric bounds of Shibhutani et al. (1996), Clitheroe
et al., 2000, Fontaine et al. 2013 with six layers without any proper justification. My understanding
is that each layer has 4 parameters (thickness, S velocity, Vp/Vs ratio, and density). However, the
authors mention that the layer properties are represented by thickness, S velocity and Vp/Vs ratio.
In that case, is the density fixed to some values? Additionally, why do they decide to fix it to six
layers, why not five/seven?
The authors say in line 240 that the set of 24 parameters in the inversion are relatively well
constrained and not sure relative to what?
Section 4.4: Mathematics on the H K stacking is not required unless the authors have done this
differently. Mathematics also suffers from the same notations used for different variables (e.g.,
variance and Poisson s ratio). Moreover, the authors derive relations for standard deviation of

The Depiction Of Zeus By Hesiod
The Depiction of Zeus The mythological character and God, Zeus, is portrayed in many ways,
by many different people. Hesiod describes Zeus as being relentless in his fury. When he gets mad
he unleashes all of his power. If his brother Hades wasn t in charge of the Underworld, he d make
all of Hell break loose. For example, in Hesiod s Theogony, which is about when Zeusdefeated his
father, Cronus, he says, Then Zeus did not hold back any longer, but now immediately his heart
was filled with strength and he showed clearly all his force. (Morford and Lenardon 85) He
tends to treat others, mortals and immortals, very unfairly. Two mortals could do the same exact
type of sacrilege towards him, and depending on how he felt that day, he would take two very
different approaches to how he would treat them. He also doesn t take any threats towards him
very lightly at all. If anyone ever threatens him, he normally punishes them very severely, if he
doesn t destroy them completely. Hesiod s approach to Zeus behavior is overdramatic, and makes
it seem more extreme than it probably would ve been.
In Hesiod s stories of the Ages of Creation, some of the humans were like gods, but those created
in the Age of Bronze and the Age of Iron were terrible. They supposedly performed the painful and
violent deeds of Ares. Those in the Iron Age were constantly given troubles by the gods, and they
are randomly destroyed in the night.
Ovid s perspective of Zeus is completely opposite of that of

The Social Media Failures Of Amy s Baking Company And Bistro
The social media failures of Amy s Baking Company and Bistro For our current assignment I
have chosen Amy s Baking Company and Bistro great failure and meltdown. The question is
how everything went so very wrong so fast. The company in question is a two owner bakery,
located in Scottsdale, Arizona. On the first glance it appears to be just another bakery. However
unlike many other bakeries this one had the luck of being featured, not once but twice, in
Kitchen Nightmares, a reality show. The show is meant for teenagers and up, showcasing bad
businesses in field of culinary works and helping them to actually achieve greatness with
guidance of a known chef celebrity Gordon Ramsey. People used to say any publicity is good
publicity. In modern day that no longer applies as the internet quite literally does not forget,
because there will always be a database or a screenshot floating somewhere in cyberspace. This
is where the issue lies. The owners of the business refused to change their ways. They have
outright refused to take any advice from critically acclaimed chef Gordon Ramsey, ignored most
if not all of his warnings and then proceeded to claim nothing is wrong. They have had several
major lapses of judgment on screen. What is more important however, is the aftermath of said
show. According to an article on zap2it.com, that kept the record of the TV show ratings, the data
gathered claims that the episode got 1.2 score out 5, with audience of 5 shares of about 3.3 million

United States Of America For Multiple Years
Health care has been an issue for the United States of America for multiple years. Dental care, a
topic that does not get much attention because people believe it is trivial, plays a major part in
people s lives, particularly children. Gerard van Honthorst s The Tooth Puller shows a dentist
pulling a patient s tooth with five observers watching. Van Honthorst shows how in awe or scared
people are of the dentist. There is a negative outlook on dentists and dental care: people are afraid
of the dentist giving them their negative connotation, while dental care only causes pain in many
people eyes. There is a problem in the health care system and improvement in the system is needed
because health care is a right for every citizen, especially dental care. The United States of America
s government should allow dental therapistto conduct the procedure that normal dentist conduct for
free for children under the age of twelve. The government should fund the teaching, training, and
employment of dental therapists to care for underserved people.
If the students had better access to dental check ups, their dentist could prescribe medicine to help
or schedule other appointments to fix the problems that have arisen with the students. Children call
other students names, which could destroy the other young person s life by losing confidence, not
wanting to go to school, or just giving up on life with suicide. That bully would say mean things to

The Canadian Retail Market Has A Complex And...
The Canadian retail market has a complex and multidimensional history. Retail Nation:
Department Stores and the Making of Modern Canada written by Donica Belisle, explores the
journeys of major Canadian department stores such as Eaton s, Simpson s and HBC between
the 1890 s and 1940 s. Specifically, she analyzes their development, morals and societal views
from a feminist and paternalist perspective. These complex theories are coupled with both
examples and clear explanations in order to gain a deep insight into the history of the Canadian
retail market. In addition to a brief overview of the book, I will discuss the interest level,
relevance, structure and potential bias within Belisle s work. Canada s department stores
experienced significant success despite entering the retail market much after stores in Great

The Purpose Of Ideology
1.ideology Meaning and Philosophy
Ideology is a system of meaning that helps define and explain the world and that makes value
judgements about that world. It refers not only to the beliefs held about the world but also to the
basic ways in which the world is defined (Croteau, Hoynes, and Milan 1953). Ideology is a body of
ideas concerning economic, social and political values and goals which posit action programmes for
attaining these goals. Padelford and Lincoln

Link between ideology and media
The ideology of the media is broad and manifests in the communicativity of the media. To facilitate
ideological analysis, however, the key is the fit between the images and texts in a specific media
output, plus the manner thought and discussion on social and cultural issues. Questions, however,
arise as to how the media content (shaped by ideologies) depict real life. This begs the question of
function and ethics. The ideological analysis further attempts to answer questions about what the
media messages depict of the society and its people.
This underscores why politicians have long perceived mass media as a veritable channel of
disseminating an ideology so that the society can mirror itself against what the media feeds it and
thus be manipulated. This further begs the question of whether the media is a contributor or
otherwise to societal problems in the face of political ideological dissemination.
Furthermore, the media and ideology are interconnected in the following ways (Asemah, 2011):
i.The media serves as a channel for communication of ideologies ii. Media function requires its
representation of concepts of reality within and without the local environment to the

Speed Loss Lab Report
RECONSTRUCTION:
Pre Crash:
On 05 25 2015 at approximately 1940 hours, Vehicle 1 was westbound on County Road 672, east
of Dupree Road. The driver of Vehicle 1, for reasons unknown, drove off the north side of CR
672 and onto a grassy shoulder. Vehicle 1 drove approximately 229 feet through the grass before
he returned to the roadway. In returning to the roadway, Driver 1 overcorrected his steering and
continued in a southwest direction across both lanes of CR 672, for approximately 76 feet, as
Vehicle 1 rotated slightly in a counterclockwise direction. As Vehicle 1 left the south roadedge,
Driver 1 again tried to overcorrect and began to rotate in a clockwise direction, as he drove onto
the grassy shoulder.

I used Limpert s analysis of a rotating vehicle for the distance of 76 feet. The result of this speed
loss was less than 1 mile per hour in the overall speed loss of Vehicle 1 and was not factored into
the overall speed loss for Vehicle 1.
After leaving the south side of the roadway, and driving onto a grass shoulder, Vehicle 1 began to
rotate in a clockwise direction, for a distance of approximately 45.16 feet. To determine the speed
loss over this distance, the percentage of braking of Vehicle 1 in relation to the rotation angle, must
be considered.
I utilized the coefficient of friction values based on skid testing conducted by the Institute of Police
Technology and Management, (IPTM). IPTM testing, indicates a coefficient of friction of .90 1.50
for a vehicle furrowing.
For this speed analysis, I used Limpert s analysis of a rotating vehicle. I utilized the sine value of
the angle determined by the path of travel of Vehicle 1 versus the angle of approach at measured
distances during the rotation. In conjunction with the standard speed loss equation, the sine value
is applied to the coefficient of friction value. The result based on this analysis is a speed loss range
of 22.85 mph to 29.50 miles per hour during

The Is An Essential Quality Of Certain Works
Translatability is an essential quality of certain works as stated by Walter Benjamin in The Task of
The Translator. In his essay, Benjamin argues that translatability is a quality of a select few works
that are significant and have risen to fame. He puts on more emphasis on the literary works when
translating than the ability of the translator. Benjamin also adds that languages shares an inner
relationship that is only revealed when translationis done properly. In general, he indicates that the
task of a translator is to renew great works.
However, when discussing translations, the primary focus should not be on the text itself but on the
languages. Languages are unique. They have transformed significantly over time and are still
undergoing changes. Moreover, each text is translatable, no matter what type of text nor the
language that it is written or being translated into. Therefore, the true task of a translator is to
provide readers an opportunity to explore the literary worlds of other cultures.
Translation ... serves the purpose of expressing the innermost relationship of language. Here,
Benjamin indicates that all languages are somehow related to one another. However, he indicates
that this relationship is something that cannot be established. He believes that the only method of
exploring this relationship is by translation. Benjamin is true that languages are related to each
other, however it is not because languages have a discreet complex relationship with

Pros And Cons Of Conscription Compulsory Military Service
The first European Institution, indeed the first international organisation of states, to formally
recognise conscientious objection to military service was the Parliamentary Assembly of the
Council of Europe.
In September 1965 Amnesty International raised with the Council the question of conscientious
objection in relation to Article 9 (freedom of conscience, thought and religion) of the European
Convention on Human Rights. The Council asked the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public
Law and International Law, Germany, to prepare a study of the situation in the member states, as a
result of which the Consultative Assembly on 26 January 1967 adopted Resolution 337, including
the following basic principles :
Persons liable to conscription for military service who, for reasons of conscience or profound
consviction, arising from religious, ethical, moral, humanitarian, philosophical or similar motives,
refuse to perform armed service shall enjoy a personal right to be released from the obligation to
perform such service. This right shall be regarded as deriving logically from the fundamental rights
of the individual in democratic Rule of Law states which are guaranteed in Article 9 of the
European Convention on Human Rights.
The concept of conscription compulsory military service by all able bodied males on behalf of the
state dates back to mediaeval obligations to monarchs and overlords, and then was formalised as a
permanent institution in the Revolutionary

Stigmatization Of Black Queer Men Essay
Stigmatization of Black Queer Men For every Black man that is born, each is gifted with the
rigid expectations of being a hyper masculine male. These expectations seemed to be passed
down through generations from family members. The study African American Gay Youth and
Their Families: Redefining Masculinity, Coping with Racism and Homophobia. , portrays some
of the hardships of coming out within this specific community. A mother who was interviewed
in this study said You are told to be a man ... and being a man does not mean you sleep with other
men, she said. Being a man means you have a woman and you procreate and continue the family
name. And for queer black men especially, this expectation of needing a woman to be the
validation for your manhood takes a toll on them and their ability to feel safe in coming out. In
this essay I intend to outline the problematic expectations and stigmatization of the black queer
male community and develop ways in which this problem can start to be overcome while dealing
with different sections of intersectionality. Black men are often viewed as emotionless, physically
strong, hyper sexual, and mischievous. There are so many rules surrounding what passing is as a
man. However, not all of these rules are created by Black men themselves. These are the rules the

First of I will start talking about the problems they faced at YouTube was facing. YouTube has

The main reason YouTube faced so many issues was due to its large and rapid growth, YouTube
went from a small website to a technology giant and large player in the IT industry practically
overnight. The solution to dealing with this large and sudden growth was to keep things simple,
by using simplicity this allowed YouTube to cope with the large growth. The simplicity approach

At YouTube the use of pythonmakes doing this easier as the dynamic nature of python makes it
easier to do. In other words no matter how bad your API is you can stub or modify or decorate your
way out of a lot of problems .
Other scalability techniques used by YouTube would be to say that they cheated a little or to say
instead of data being correct it is approximate correctness. What is meant by cheating is that not all
of their servers are consistent at the same time a good example of this is that if a user writes a
comment on a video then instead deploying that comment to all servers in the network and keeping
all data consistent what they have done at YouTube is they done it so that the system does not have
to have globally worldwide consistent transactions. Meaning that when the a user rights a comment
on a video he/she sees that comment instantly however someone on the other side of the world may
not see that comment for a couple milliseconds, in other words the cheat. The data will be
consistent in the end, the comments are not financial transaction therefore it is essential that you
know when to cheat, for example if it was a financial transaction where a user is purchasing
something then it is not good enough for the data must be consistent. Another main part of the
cheating technique is knowing when to fake data, for example to say that The fastest function call

Organizational Culture and Structure
Organizational Culture and Structure
The structure of an organization determines the allocation of roles, regulations, and responsibilities,
and therefore builds a basis for the culture in an organization. There is a constant relationship
between organizational structure and organizational culture that provides a theme within an
organization. Both can be difficult to clearly define and distinguish when analyzing an organization.
Organization culture is a perspective into the company s personality; it provides descriptive values,
principals, traditions, and a way of doing things that effect how members view the organization

Stories of innovation inspire creativity and help build the strength of an organization s culture. A
strong organizational culture holds key values that are shared with all members. It is the
responsibility of leaders to uphold an organization s culture to ensure that there is a proper
foundation that binds the structure.
Organizational Structure Any organization should have its own operating structure in order to
reach success. Organizational structure is defined as a hierarchy of people that determine roles of
authority, communications, and the duties of an organization (Robbins et al., 2013). Organizations
must organize their structure to meet the needs of that particular organization, and assure that it
resembles the values instilled by the organizational culture. The development of culture through an
organization is a natural process that is dependent upon the instilled values of the leaders and
members in the organization (O Neil, 2011). Leaders can still influence the culture by sticking to
their values and implementing a strong and effective organizational structure. There are several
models that organizations can utilize to structure the elements within the organization.
The structure of an organization can be divided into two generic organization structure models.

Criminal Racial Inequality In The Criminal Equity System
Race and social status should have no effect on the outcome of a culprit; yet, because of the
involvement of injustice within the criminal equity system, the accused may be punished for an
action they did not undertake. Many have argued that criminal injustice is not as severe as ableism
or racism merely based on the fact that the average person is not condemned in court. However,
once an offender is scrutinized against under the influence of the law, they can no longer live as

gap within the market for trainers or any footwear of that matter that allows individuals to walk
at speeds of 20mph is not shocking, however, the development of said trainers could be filled
adequately whilst still offering the consumer the best deal on said trainers as is possible.
Promotional message to potential consumers The highest measured speed ever obtained by any
individual since records began is 100m in 9.59 seconds the current holder of worlds

Examination of the types of database systems that are available and how health care facilities
utilize these different types of databases is the topic of this report. Giving more detail on the
different types of architecture of databases and data structure will follow. Defining Health Care
Database Systems A computerized clinical database consists of clinical data for storing, retrieving,
analyzing, and reporting of information (McCartney, 2012).The data in these databases help in
managing care plans, research projects, and creating reports for the different departments within a
health care facility. The first type of database that a health care facility may use is Operational

UNIX systems use to use flat files for storing data. Word processors and spreadsheet software can
create flat files. Health Care facilities might use this type of data file for posting employee phone
lists. Hierarchical database have data in a tree like structure with a parent to child relationship
(one to many). The parent could have many children but the children have only one parent. All
the attributes of the data is in a list under one entity type. A relational database is a database that
consists of a collection of tables with columns showing entities, and rows showing data. This type
of database uses a primary key and foreign key. The foreign key in another table will point to the
primary key of a table, and this is how tables can relate to each other. This permits for one to one,
one to many, and many to many relationship between the data. An advantage of relational databases
includes the ease of adding or modifying new tables and entities without needing to change the
structure of the database already in place. Relational database have many features, including
indexing, setting data type, and setting validation tests, all these help to ensure data integrity.
Conclusion The information about the different types of databases that are available helps to
explain the type of health care facilities use. The presentation of details on the architecture of
databases and how they differ was the main topic of this

What Would Happen If Foot Binding In China Had Not Been...
What would have happened if foot binding in China had not been outlawed in 1912? Since
perhaps around the tenth or eleventh century (the exact date is unknown), foot binding was a
very common practice in China to modify the shape of women s feet. The process began at a
young age; the mothers and aunts would apply tight binding to the feet of their young girls. This
practice became very popular for all social classes during the Song Dynasty. This was a symbol
of elegance and beauty in Chinese culture. However, this was not only a symbol of elegance and
beauty. During this time when arranged marriages were very common, the size of girls feet
determined how desirable of a bride they would be. For example, the most desirable foot size for
a bride would be three inches, which was often known as a golden lotus . A four inch silver lotus
was respected. Feet that were five inches or longer were known as iron feet ; marriages for girls
with iron feet were much more unlikely. In other words, foot binding became a symbol of status,
even amongst the elite. But, this practice caused many health concerns. Toe nails would often in
grow, which causes infection and injury. Most of the time, blood circulation to the toes would be
cut off. As a result, injuries would be less likely to heal. Girls would also spend many years with

Men of higher class would be chosen to marry women with golden lotus feet. I believe that foot
binding was the beginning to changing ideologies in the Chinese population. If foot binding had
not been banned, perhaps many Chinese customs would be still in effect today. Arranged marriages
would continue to be a lot more common, or even a law or something that all men and women had
to obey to. Women and men would not be allowed to marry the one they love. Young girls would
continue to endure the pain and injuries resulting from this cruel

The World s Necessity For Crude Oil And Petroleum Gasoline
There is always a picture or a visual concept that is incredibly appealing to the twelve year old
inside everyone, whether it is a car, a sports figure, or a memorable location. To many people,
cars are this visual concept; a glowing poster of a wild Lamborghini or a Ferrari F40, just driving
the imagination wild. In this day and age, the world s necessity for crude oil and petroleum
gasoline makes people dependent upon the industry, and the quickly exhausting nonrenewable
resource is problem. Now that the end of this staple resource is imminent, it must be conserved, a
problem for cars like the Lamborghini Aventador which has a 6.5 Liter V 12 engine ( Aventador

Here, many Mercedes fans might object that the Gull Wing was first, but the Mark III was just a
tamed street version of Ford s GT40 racecar ( Supercar History The Birth of the Supercar ). The
author believes that this is what qualifies the Mark III GT40 as the world s first supercar. Other
cars similar to the Ford quickly followed, like the AC Cobra 427, also known as the Shelby
Cobra was launched in 1965. Then in 1966 the Ferrari 275GTB, the Stingray Corvette, the
Jensen FF, but most famous of all, the Lamborghini Miura were all born. Over the years the
supercar has prospered and continues to do so today. Now, these cars are constantly shattering
records, and they look phenomenal while doing it. Cars like any Lamborghini, any Ferrari, the
Lexus LFA, the Koenigsegg Agera R, and many other cars are now what are considered
supercars. These companies like Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, Koenigsegg, Pagani, Aston
Martin, Maclaren, are just about all the companies that make up the exclusive party of supercar
makers. However, Ferrari is the all time king of this group as Jeremy Clarkson states, I mean the
Maclaren [MP4 12C] is absolutely brilliant, but the Ferrari [458] is just a little more special
(Clarkson Season 20, Episode 3 ). Clarkson explains just how important the X factor or
specialness is to a supercar. This ties right into why people buy supercars. The reason is not just to
have a car, but to have a car that is

Comparing On The Pulse Of The Morning And The Gift Outright
The poems On the Pulse of the Morning, by Maya Angelou and The Gift Outright, by Robert
Frost share many similar aspects, such as being written for presidential inaugurations and
explaining their author s views of America s changing state. However, they differ in key aspects,
such as the intended audience and the formality of the writing. Angelou s poem speaks to a broad,
diverse audience and displays an informal fashion, while Frost directs his poem towards a
predominantly white America and writes in a formal tone. In his poem, Frost speaks directly to the
American population as he sees it a chiefly white society. He refers to the land as ours, referencing
the struggles faced by colonists in the Revolutionary War. Native Americans

Retirement Plan Proposal And Communication Plan
Retirement Plan Proposal and Communication Plan
As being part of the HR benefit specialist team, our management team has given our department a
task on coming up and creating a proposal that will include useful information based on an
important topic which revolves around retirement plans that will be offered to the 150 employees
that are employed with this company. As we all can be aware, when dealing with retirement
benefits there are many sources where employees themselves can receive information on this
particular matter which some include Disability Insurance, Social Security Old Age, IRAs/Roth
IRAs, Employer sponsor contribution plans just to name a few. From these mentioned resources
we will be discussing and focusing on three important retirement plans that most employees tend to
rely on when working with an employer. Other areas that will also be discussed will be pension
plans as well as contribution plans, profit sharing and last but not least 401K.
To get more into detail when dealing with traditional pensions and their plans those are normally
calculated to come up with payments that are given to the employee once coming to a retirement.
The 401K is a payout that is based on both the employer and the employee s contributions as well
as the number of interested that has been earned over the period of time. Profit=sharing revolves
around the gross sales or even money that has been put out for distribution from the employer to the
employees. Now, when dealing with

The Savings Loans Crisis Of The 1980s
The Savings Loans crisis of the 1980s produced the biggest collapse of US financial institutions
since the Great Depression. It emerged due to volatile interest rate climate in late 1970s when
depositors withdrew from these S L institutions in large number and put them in money market
funds where they could get higher returns as these money market funds were not under the
purview of Regulation Q which restricted the interest these S Ls could offer to their depositors.
1)How did the crisis begin? The business of the S L industry was based on the unstable principle
of borrowing short and lending long, so they accepted short term deposits ie their liabilities... Show

This recapitalization bill was used as a bargaining chip against the Bank Board which had
become more rigorous in dealing with these insolvent thrifts. So, recapitalization was postponed
and eventually when it was done, it was too little and already too late. Too little because although
they allowed recapitalisation but along with that, they put a forbearance clause which precluded
the regulators from hastily closing these insolvent firms. And as we know it was this delayed
closure of these failed firms which actually inflated the S L crisis. So, the reluctance of congress
to confront the real size of the crisis and leniency towards the politically influential thrifts
prevented decisive measures from being taken even after the identification of the problem. The
FSLIC recapitalisation bill of 1987 had provision for just around $11 billion when the need was
probably around $40 billion at that time. Later in 1989, Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery,

Causes Of Confucianism In China
China faced many weaknesses in the wake of Western civilization. One of the problems that the
Chinese culture faced peasant uprisings were frequent throughout China. When
Confucianism was strong, instability still broke out in China. Peasant uprisings were a common
thing throughout China. The successful revolts were given justification because it was assumed
that they had been justified against bad rulers who had broken the Confucian social contract. One of
the most violent challenges to Confucian values were capitalist modernity and
Christianity, which were the introduction western systems in the nineteenth century. The arrival of
western imperialists and their belief system was a catalyst for the Chinese to look at their own
society and its faults. Many Chinese people were poor and did not rise up against their fate.
Many women in China were oppressed physically, by being treated as social inferiors and being
deprived of a good education. Women were also oppressed physically by having their feet bound
small. Western barbarians posed a threat to the Chinese government because they were able to
come to China and invade with impunity. Many radical thinkers believe that the only reasonable
response to the chaos in China was to declare that Confucian ideas and values were responsible for
the crisis in China. The Confucian past in China had corrupted the Chinese government and
exterminated Chinse culture and society from Western civilization.

In 1997 a movie called Amistad depicted the true story of a group of Africans that were taken

inaccurate tale of the terrible ordeal, it gave the story world renowned attention. The real story
had more drama and tearjerker parts then the movie did. If the movie ever gets remade,
hopefully this time it follows the facts exactly. A man named Sengbe Pieh, commonly known in
the United States as Jose Cinque, was born around 1813 in Mende Country. He was rumored to be

The Hipster s Effect On Society And Address The Future Of...
The Oxford dictionary defines a hipster as a person who follows the latest styles and fashions,
especially those regarded as being outside the cultural mainstream (Fowler, Fowler and Murray,
1964). Since hipsters are a modern phenomenon, definitions are often broad and contradictory.
There also exists little scholarship concerning the subject since their subcultural formation must be
analyzed while it is still in formation. The lack of interest in academia contrasts to the immense
quantity of opinions regarding the phenomenon made by journalists, bloggers and layman experts
(Scheimer, 2013). This essay will attempt to fill the gap in anthropological literature. We will focus

The word referred to their behaviour and their way of dressing. Towards the end of the 50s, this
group of people came to be known as the Beatnik generation. (Rasmussen, Boas, Rasmussen, King

attitude and left wing ideology are all rooted in Beatnik subculture.
Although there is no tangible definition, most attempts at defining elements of the hipster
subcultural identity agrees that hipsters are young, typically between 20 and 35 years old, most
likely white and from a middle class background. They can be either male or female. They are
most likely studying towards an arts degree or have recently graduated. Hipsters are interested in
alternative culture: left of center politics, indie music, independent films, thrift store or vintage
fashion, Apple products and a diet of locally grown, organic or vegetarian/vegan food(Scheimer,
2013). None of these interests are set in stone, with there being a multitude of nameless, hipster
subgroups who selectively embrace or shun the items or opinions above.
Unlike previous youth groups, hipsters aim toward becoming individuals rather than as part of a
group. Whereas other youth groups are unified by their common label, a hipster is opposed to
being defined and labelled as such. Since categorizations imply

Martin Luther King Principles Essay
Principles prompt activity, impel motion, direct choices. A principled person always has a place
to stand, knows where he or she is coming from and likely to end up. Principles always lead the
person who possesses them somewhere, for some purpose, to do something (Byron). Principles
serve as the foundation for a system or belief. To most people, it makes sense that a religion
would have a set of principle beliefs; much less often, however, are the principles of an individual
acknowledged
Martin Luther King Jr. was a prime example of an individual whose strong principle foundation
gave him the means to stand up for his beliefs. Within King s writing, Letter from Birmingham
Jail, he makes a blanket claim of his stance by stating, I am in Birmingham because injustice is
here. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Simply put, King stands for justice.
His principle belief that every person no matter their race deserve equal access to means propels
him to take action. He realized that there were consequences for his belief particularly jail.
Despite knowing this was where he would undoubtedly end up, he stood behind his belief that
humans of all races deserved to feel dignified and accepted in society, as well as have equal
opportunities for voice and action (involvement in various outlets).
Having discussed King s general set of principle beliefs, one can now compare them with those of
the Catholic Social Teaching beginning with The Principle of

action, so I assessed reports and depictions of Napoleon s actions on the battlefield from battles
such as Toulon, The Battle of the Pyramids, Leipzig, Borodino, and Austerlitz. I also examined
comparisons of his tactics to previous tactics to deduce why Napoleon was so successful on the

Yes, I am including generals such as Alexander the Great, the Duke of Wellington, Ulysses S.
Grant, Dwight D. Eisenhower, George S. Patton, and Erwin Rommel. He had a theory that wars
could be won in one battle with a decisive blow and, of course, the complete annihilation of the
enemy army. His army did not have supply lines; instead they lived off the land so that they
could maximize their pace. Napoleon s cavalry was used to scout ahead of the real army so that
Napoleon could know exactly where his enemy was. Napoleon also divided his army into corps
that were never more than 24 hours apart so that they could assist each other if necessary. Napoleon
devised tactics so that he could win any battle, despite his numerical disadvantage. Finally,
Napoleon did not command everything on the battlefield; he delegated to competent subordinates
who were able to make their own decisions, which helped with his army s

Muriel s Wedding And The Sapphires Analysis
Muriel s Wedding and The Sapphires Comparative Essay
Muriel s Wedding (1994) and The Sapphires (2012) are both Australian made films that highlight
the ideas of different and diversity amongst people in the 90s and 60s respectively. Each film
conveys themes of discrimination, music and the story of outcasts rising above the typically
popular clique.
Muriel Heslop is portrayed as a social outcast the people she calls her friends are constantly telling
her she doesn t fit in and doesn t dress the right way. In this regard, the Sapphires can be compared
to her. When Julie, Cynthia and Gail perform in a talent show at a bar in town, the completely
white audience look away, roll their eyes or even walk straight out of the bar, purely because the
girls are Aboriginal. Afterwards, when a much less talented woman wins the competition, the
compare tells the outraged girls to pack your swags and go back to your humpy . This reveals
the compare s view on Aborigines and the fact she believes that they live in a state of lower
socioeconomic standing. It is implied that others in the audience reflect this view, also, despite
being ignorant to the Aborigines lifestyle. A similar attitude is displayed in Muriel s Wedding in
the opening scene when Muriel catches the wedding bouquet at one of the popular girl s
weddings. She is told to give it to someone else because she will never get married . Both these
scenes convey the discrimination towards people with different social standing and looks to what
was considered acceptable back then.
In both films, family plays an important part in the outcome of the story. Julie, Cynthia and Gail s
parents encourage their singing and performing as much as they can. They believe that their
daughters and niece, Kay, could make a difference. The father giving the girls a chance to chase
their aspiration by allowing them to go into the perilous warzones in Vietnam is an example of
just how far their parents support goes. Muriel s family also has a huge effect on her eventual
success but in a negative matter. The constant disapproval from her father drives Muriel to make
herself good enough to please him and the rest of her family. Once Muriel loses respect for her
father, she becomes

Characteristics Of Plato s Allegory Of The Cave
Introduction
In this paper, I will argue that Plato s Allegory of the Cave is a good representation of our
relationship to the media in the United States.
To make this argument, I will first outline the characteristics of Plato s cave.
Second I will argue that Plato s Allegory of the Cave is a good representation of our relationship to
the media in the United States.
Third, I will entertain the most persuasive possible counterargument to my view, which is that the
United States media is not a good representation of the media in the United States.
Fourth, I will refute this counterargument (counterargument, not argument) by giving examples of
how some media sources cherry pick what to tell and what not to say to the public. So the public
does not have all the facts.
Finally, I will conclude my paper by summarizing the main lines of argument in it and reiterating
thesis that Plato s Allegory of the Cave is a good representation of our relationship to the media in
the United States.
Outline
I will now outline the characteristics of Plato s Allegory of the cave. In the Allegory of the Cave,
Plato distinguishes between people who mistake sensory knowledge for the truth and people who
do see the fact. It goes like this: Imagine a cave, in which there are three prisoners. The prisoners
are constrained to some rocks, their arms and legs are bound, and their head is tied so that they
cannot look at anything but the stonewall in front of them. These prisoners have been here since

America, Lows for Many, Highs for Some
Reconstruction in America during the post civil war era was a both a test and boundary pushing
experience that challenged racial laws and the livelihood of many African Americans. During this
time period it was both a struggle and battle for everyone involved but none were hit harder than
that of the black community. A great deal African Americans had to adapt to the constant fear of
lynching and discrimination that was a threat on a daily basis. Especially in America during the
late 1800 s through the 1960 s which was very nadir time for many African Americans; do to loss
of multiple civil rights, discrimination, and segregation. Fear and discrimination were an everyday
feeling that numerous African Americans had endure when it came to living during this time
period of racial tension and opposition from white racial groups. To illustrate this point Elias Hill,
who on one fateful night on May 5th, 1871 experienced first hand the ruthlessness of the Ku Klux
Klan. On this night the Ku Klux Klan kicked in the front door of Hills home and dragged him
outside along with another black boy, where they were questioned about the burning down of
white owned homes. Mr. Hill replied with I told them it was not me; I could not burn houses .
Mr. Hill and the black boy were beaten for a crime he did not commit; all so the Ku Klux Klan
could gather answers to a meeting held between Mr. Hill and the Urban League. As a result there
was fear on both sides; Mr. Hill feared that the Ku Klux

  • 2. Essay on Critique of Hume s Analysis of Causality Critique of Hume s Analysis of Causality Hume s analyses of human apprehension and of causality were the most penetrating up to his time and continue to have great influence. Contemporary Spanish philosopher Xavier Zubiri (1893 1983) has examined both and identified three underlying errors: (1) the failure to recognize that there are three stages of human intellection, and especially that the first, primordial apprehension, has quite unique characteristics; (2) the attempt to place an excessive burden on the content of impressions while ignoring what Zubiri terms their formality of reality ; and (3) the failure to recognize that functionality, not causality, is the basis for most of our knowledge. Causal chains in general cannot be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This task Hume undertook in his Treatise of Human Nature, Book I. In Part IV, he is concerned to establish a reason or explanation for our belief in the independent and continuing existence of external things or bodies , for upon this all causal reasoning about such things must ultimately rest. As is well known, Hume argues that such belief must either come from the senses, reason, or what he terms imagination ; and he dismisses the first two, leaving only the last, where he attributes the belief to coherence and constancy of impressions. (1) For the present study, details of Hume s argument are not as important as his basic assumptions. One of those assumptions, never explicitly stated but always lurking just beneath the surface, is that all reasoning and understanding of the external world comes from the mind working on the content of sensible impressions, be they pains, pleasures, colors, or sounds. The burden of inferring the existence of things outside of the mind then must fall upon the mind and those processes available to it, because what the senses deliver is inadequate to the task: That our senses offer not their impressions as the images of something distinct, or independent, and external, is evident; because they convey to us ... Anion Lab Report Discussion: Table 1 above illustrated the anions that are taking place within the selected water samples in which the concentration of the anions is different from one type to other. The anions that present in the water samples include Cl , F , Br , NO32 and SO42 ; however, no PO43 anion was present in all samples of water. First thing to discuss is the concentration of all desired anions in deionized water which was observed to be (zero ppm) since the dionized water is a type of water that does not contain ions. The second thing is to compare the concentration of the anions for each type of water to the regulations designed by Kahramaa. Figure 3: Concentration of Cl in different types of water with the regulation concentrations in KAHRAMAA Figure 3 above illustrates the concentration of Cl in different types of water in addition to the regulation limits designed by Kahramaa. In connection with what happened last season, We see the status of Ragner s health coming into play again and it was not good. His wife ruled his land while he was away. She doesn t really want to give up her rule of the place. We also see his brother in Paris where he s living out the deal he was ofter by the king of the city. Which include being married to his daughter and defending Paris, against the Vikings in exchange for land and a title. The opening scenes consists of Ragner having some kind of near death vision of where he denied entrance to Valhalla the Viking afterlife. The vision also shows him having glimpse of his future. ... For example, people betraying him like his brother did once. his brother is officially married to the princess of Paris. Unfortunately the woman really doesn t want to marry him. There is also a little bit of time jump that occur as well. Which do not hurt the episode in my opinion. Its not like done in a way that is awkard or doesn t work for the flow of the plot that is gettng started. I really like the near death scene that feature Ragner and its showing to him of what is to come. Its just seem to very cool to me. In order for an immigrant person like Santosh to fit in a multicultural community, he needs to widen his experiences and cope with the new society. Essay On EU Law Whilst there has been contention to the definition of direct effects, it has generally been explained to be a principle that bestows upon the individuals of the European Union (hereafter, the EU) Member State, a right which flows from EU law. The basis for this can be found in Article 288 of the Treaty of the Functioning of the European Union (hereafter, the TFEU), which reiterates this notion. The wording of Article 288 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (hereafter, the TFEU) is crystal clear; Directives are addressed to Member States and would have to first be transposed into national law within the given deadline. However, where the Directive in question can fulfil the conditions in Van Gend and have expired , they may have a direct effect. Nevertheless, this direct effect is restricted only to that of a horizontal nature. Marshall disallows individuals from enforcing a Directive against a private body. Concerns were raised when there was a call to allow Directives to be horizontally effective. One point of contention was the fact that Article 288 expressly mentions that Directives are binding upon Member States who were expressly addressed. Another argument raised was focused on the distinction between Regulations and Directives. The transposition process for Directives is what differentiates the two. To take away this ability would be to blur the demarcation between the two types of secondary EU law sources as they would both be rendered directly applicable. Despite the criticisms, however, Marshall was affirmed in Dori a decade later. Yet, a problem stems from the refusal of having Directives be horizontally effective; claimants are unable to rely ... Differentiating Between Market Structures Differentiating Between Market Structures Don Peterson ECO/365 February 2, 2015 Elena Zee Differentiating Between Market Structures A market structure in economics describes the state of a market with respect to its competition. There exist several different market structures like perfect competition, oligopoly, and monopolies among others. These markets all produce different types of goods or services, like public and private goods as well as common and collective goods. Firms operating in these different market structures utilize the labor market in very different ways because of very diverse uses of labor in each market structure, so it is important for a firm to use the labor market equilibrium principles to their advantage ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Different companies operate under different business models and one can see that under some market forms, firms have no control over price, in others they have the power to adjust price in a way that adds to its profits. There are different market structures with perfect competition at one end and pure monopoly at the other. In between are different forms called monopolistic competition and oligopoly that share some of the characteristics of both perfect competition and a monopoly competitive structure (Colander, 2013, Chapter 13). Perfect competition exists when products are homogeneous, and there are many firms too small to have any influence on the market price. These types of businesses can easily enter and exit the industry. A situation where even one producer can affect the price of a good by increasing or withholding output is called imperfect competition. Monopolistic competition exists when many producers of slightly differentiated products are able to sell them at well above their marginal cost. The core of the argument for competition is that as long as competition exists in markets no one producer or group of producers can afford to abuse power by charging too much or by selling bogus goods for fear that consumers might turn away from them to buy from other producers. In line with that argument one of the government s tasks is to keep competition alive and functioning. A ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Those parameters help to achieve faster convergence. It is important to note that those parameters depend on the problem, but the authors never mention how those parameters were tuned and convergence was decided. The authors also mention that they use 24 parametric bounds of Shibhutani et al. (1996), Clitheroe et al., 2000, Fontaine et al. 2013 with six layers without any proper justification. My understanding is that each layer has 4 parameters (thickness, S velocity, Vp/Vs ratio, and density). However, the authors mention that the layer properties are represented by thickness, S velocity and Vp/Vs ratio. In that case, is the density fixed to some values? Additionally, why do they decide to fix it to six layers, why not five/seven? The authors say in line 240 that the set of 24 parameters in the inversion are relatively well constrained and not sure relative to what? Hesiod describes Zeus as being relentless in his fury. When he gets mad he unleashes all of his power. If his brother Hades wasn t in charge of the Underworld, he d make all of Hell break loose. For example, in Hesiod s Theogony, which is about when Zeusdefeated his father, Cronus, he says, Then Zeus did not hold back any longer, but now immediately his heart was filled with strength and he showed clearly all his force. (Morford and Lenardon 85) He tends to treat others, mortals and immortals, very unfairly. Two mortals could do the same exact type of sacrilege towards him, and depending on how he felt that day, he would take two very different approaches to how he would treat them. He also doesn t take any threats towards him very lightly at all. If anyone ever threatens him, he normally punishes them very severely, if he doesn t destroy them completely. Hesiod s approach to Zeus behavior is overdramatic, and makes it seem more extreme than it probably would ve been. In Hesiod s stories of the Ages of Creation, some of the humans were like gods, but those created in the Age of Bronze and the Age of Iron were terrible. They supposedly performed the painful and violent deeds of Ares. Those in the Iron Age were constantly given troubles by the gods, and they are randomly destroyed in the night. The question is how everything went so very wrong so fast. The company in question is a two owner bakery, located in Scottsdale, Arizona. On the first glance it appears to be just another bakery. Retail Nation: Department Stores and the Making of Modern Canada written by Donica Belisle, explores the journeys of major Canadian department stores such as Eaton s, Simpson s and HBC between the 1890 s and 1940 s. Specifically, she analyzes their development, morals and societal views from a feminist and paternalist perspective. These complex theories are coupled with both examples and clear explanations in order to gain a deep insight into the history of the Canadian retail market. In addition to a brief overview of the book, I will discuss the interest level, relevance, structure and potential bias within Belisle s work. Canada s department stores experienced significant success despite entering the retail market much after stores in Great Britain, France and the United States. After being established in the 1880 s and 90 s, they experienced rapid growth and eventually surpassed major international stores such as Macys, Fields and Wanamaker in sales and store size. This national market domination was far more prominent than anywhere elsewhere in the world (44). Their quick fortune was driven by the innovative use of catalogues and the opening of numerous branches during their heyday in the early 1900 s. This put primarily Eaton s, but also Simpson s and HBC, in the spotlight as globally recognized Canadian department stores. These great retail stores had a momentous effect on the Canadian ... In his essay, Benjamin argues that translatability is a quality of a select few works that are significant and have risen to fame. He puts on more emphasis on the literary works when translating than the ability of the translator. Benjamin also adds that languages shares an inner relationship that is only revealed when translationis done properly. In general, he indicates that the task of a translator is to renew great works. However, when discussing translations, the primary focus should not be on the text itself but on the languages. Languages are unique. They have transformed significantly over time and are still undergoing changes. Moreover, each text is translatable, no matter what type of text nor the language that it is written or being translated into. Therefore, the true task of a translator is to provide readers an opportunity to explore the literary worlds of other cultures. Translation ... serves the purpose of expressing the innermost relationship of language. Here, Benjamin indicates that all languages are somehow related to one another. Pros And Cons Of Conscription Compulsory Military Service The first European Institution, indeed the first international organisation of states, to formally recognise conscientious objection to military service was the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. In September 1965 Amnesty International raised with the Council the question of conscientious objection in relation to Article 9 (freedom of conscience, thought and religion) of the European Convention on Human Rights. The Council asked the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law, Germany, to prepare a study of the situation in the member states, as a result of which the Consultative Assembly on 26 January 1967 adopted Resolution 337, including the following basic principles : Persons liable to conscription for military service who, for reasons of conscience or profound consviction, arising from religious, ethical, moral, humanitarian, philosophical or similar motives, refuse to perform armed service shall enjoy a personal right to be released from the obligation to perform such service. This right shall be regarded as deriving logically from the fundamental rights of the individual in democratic Rule of Law states which are guaranteed in Article 9 of the European Convention on Human Rights. These expectations seemed to be passed down through generations from family members. The study African American Gay Youth and Their Families: Redefining Masculinity, Coping with Racism and Homophobia. , portrays some of the hardships of coming out within this specific community. A mother who was interviewed in this study said You are told to be a man ... and being a man does not mean you sleep with other men, she said. Being a man means you have a woman and you procreate and continue the family name. And for queer black men especially, this expectation of needing a woman to be the validation for your manhood takes a toll on them and their ability to feel safe in coming out. In this essay I intend to outline the problematic expectations and stigmatization of the black queer male community and develop ways in which this problem can start to be overcome while dealing with different sections of intersectionality. Principles always lead the person who possesses them somewhere, for some purpose, to do something (Byron). Principles serve as the foundation for a system or belief. To most people, it makes sense that a religion would have a set of principle beliefs; much less often, however, are the principles of an individual acknowledged Martin Luther King Jr. was a prime example of an individual whose strong principle foundation gave him the means to stand up for his beliefs. Within King s writing, Letter from Birmingham Jail, he makes a blanket claim of his stance by stating, I am in Birmingham because injustice is here. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Simply put, King stands for justice. His principle belief that every person no matter their race deserve equal access to means propels him to take action. He realized that there were consequences for his belief particularly jail. Despite knowing this was where he would undoubtedly end up, he stood behind his belief that humans of all races deserved to feel dignified and accepted in society, as well as have equal opportunities for voice and action (involvement in various outlets). How did Napoleon modernize ground warfare? 2. Describe your research to date on your topic. This topic can only be analyzed by examining Napoleon in action, so I assessed reports and depictions of Napoleon s actions on the battlefield from battles such as Toulon, The Battle of the Pyramids, Leipzig, Borodino, and Austerlitz. I also examined comparisons of his tactics to previous tactics to deduce why Napoleon was so successful on the battlefield, despite sometimes being at a numerical disadvantage. He had a theory that wars could be won in one battle with a decisive blow and, of course, the complete annihilation of the enemy army. His army did not have supply lines; instead they lived off the land so that they could maximize their pace. Napoleon s cavalry was used to scout ahead of the real army so that Napoleon could know exactly where his enemy was. Napoleon also divided his army into corps that were never more than 24 hours apart so that they could assist each other if necessary. Napoleon devised tactics so that he could win any battle, despite his numerical disadvantage. Finally, Napoleon did not command everything on the battlefield; he delegated to competent subordinates who were able to make their own decisions, which helped with his army s ... • 53. Muriel s Wedding And The Sapphires Analysis Muriel s Wedding and The Sapphires Comparative Essay Muriel s Wedding (1994) and The Sapphires (2012) are both Australian made films that highlight the ideas of different and diversity amongst people in the 90s and 60s respectively. Each film conveys themes of discrimination, music and the story of outcasts rising above the typically popular clique. Muriel Heslop is portrayed as a social outcast the people she calls her friends are constantly telling her she doesn t fit in and doesn t dress the right way. In this regard, the Sapphires can be compared to her. When Julie, Cynthia and Gail perform in a talent show at a bar in town, the completely white audience look away, roll their eyes or even walk straight out of the bar, purely because the girls are Aboriginal. Afterwards, when a much less talented woman wins the competition, the compare tells the outraged girls to pack your swags and go back to your humpy . This reveals the compare s view on Aborigines and the fact she believes that they live in a state of lower socioeconomic standing. It is implied that others in the audience reflect this view, also, despite being ignorant to the Aborigines lifestyle. A similar attitude is displayed in Muriel s Wedding in the opening scene when Muriel catches the wedding bouquet at one of the popular girl s weddings. She is told to give it to someone else because she will never get married . Both these scenes convey the discrimination towards people with different social standing and looks to what was considered acceptable back then. In both films, family plays an important part in the outcome of the story. Julie, Cynthia and Gail s parents encourage their singing and performing as much as they can. They believe that their daughters and niece, Kay, could make a difference. The father giving the girls a chance to chase their aspiration by allowing them to go into the perilous warzones in Vietnam is an example of just how far their parents support goes. Muriel s family also has a huge effect on her eventual success but in a negative matter. The constant disapproval from her father drives Muriel to make herself good enough to please him and the rest of her family. Once Muriel loses respect for her father, she becomes ... • 55. Characteristics Of Plato s Allegory Of The Cave Introduction In this paper, I will argue that Plato s Allegory of the Cave is a good representation of our relationship to the media in the United States. To make this argument, I will first outline the characteristics of Plato s cave. Second I will argue that Plato s Allegory of the Cave is a good representation of our relationship to the media in the United States. Third, I will entertain the most persuasive possible counterargument to my view, which is that the United States media is not a good representation of the media in the United States. Fourth, I will refute this counterargument (counterargument, not argument) by giving examples of how some media sources cherry pick what to tell and what not to say to the public. So the public does not have all the facts. Finally, I will conclude my paper by summarizing the main lines of argument in it and reiterating thesis that Plato s Allegory of the Cave is a good representation of our relationship to the media in the United States. Outline I will now outline the characteristics of Plato s Allegory of the cave. In the Allegory of the Cave, Plato distinguishes between people who mistake sensory knowledge for the truth and people who do see the fact. It goes like this: Imagine a cave, in which there are three prisoners. The prisoners are constrained to some rocks, their arms and legs are bound, and their head is tied so that they cannot look at anything but the stonewall in front of them. These prisoners have been here since ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 56. America, Lows for Many, Highs for Some Reconstruction in America during the post civil war era was a both a test and boundary pushing experience that challenged racial laws and the livelihood of many African Americans. During this time period it was both a struggle and battle for everyone involved but none were hit harder than that of the black community. A great deal African Americans had to adapt to the constant fear of lynching and discrimination that was a threat on a daily basis. Especially in America during the late 1800 s through the 1960 s which was very nadir time for many African Americans; do to loss of multiple civil rights, discrimination, and segregation. Fear and discrimination were an everyday feeling that numerous African Americans had endure when it came to living during this time period of racial tension and opposition from white racial groups. To illustrate this point Elias Hill, who on one fateful night on May 5th, 1871 experienced first hand the ruthlessness of the Ku Klux Klan. On this night the Ku Klux Klan kicked in the front door of Hills home and dragged him outside along with another black boy, where they were questioned about the burning down of white owned homes. Mr. Hill replied with I told them it was not me; I could not burn houses . Mr. Hill and the black boy were beaten for a crime he did not commit; all so the Ku Klux Klan could gather answers to a meeting held between Mr. Hill and the Urban League.
