Linguistic Genius Of Babies Book Review
Patricia Kuhl s TED Talk lecture, The Linguistic Genius of Babies, is an overview of how infants as
young as six months old are capable of discriminating between the units of all languages equally, but
at ten months, infants tend to become better at distinguishing between units of their native language
and worse at those of a foreign language. This shows that there is a critical period not just for language
acquisition but also for the ability to acquire a second language. Therefore, parents who with for their
children to have a bilingual advantage should expose infants to a second language as soon as possible.
Noam Chomsky believed that humans are genetically designed with the capacity to learn language.
Humans have a system of common rules and properties, called universal grammar, which allows us to
learn any world language. It appears that Kuhl s research supports this theory. Kuhl exposed American
infants, who had only been previously exposed to English, to Mandarin during the critical period for
language acquisition. Babies exposed to both English and Mandarin showed equivalent statistics for
language discrimination. This exposure alters the Language Acquisitions Device (LAD) in the brain
and makes infants the citizens of the world, (Kuhl, 2010) Chomsky believed them to be, rather than
the culture bound listeners, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While humans are biologically designed to produce language, with exception of reasons of defect,
there is still a time limit during which infants must be exposed to language or risk developmental
delays. These delays are not just in the area of language acquisitions, but are related to other cognitive
functions as well, as we saw in the example of Justin, the boy who was raised as a dog by his
caregiver. Language acquisition is essential in the development of the ability to problem solve and to
process and understand symbolic

Business Studies Essay Relating to Finance
Financial Management is a critical aspect of any business in order to achieve a sustainable and

By spreading expenses over the whole year there is a more equal cash outflow each month rather than
one huge outflow during one month. An example of this is the offer from insurance companies to be
able to pay insurance premiums monthly instead of annually because of the excessively high costs.
Another strategy commonly used is Discounts for the early payments , This is where a business may
offer discounts to account customers for the early payment of their accounts to speed up cash inflow.
This discount may be a little as 2 5%, but shows effective in terms of cash inflow as it gives incentive
for the customers, Giving both the customer and business a gain in the financial situation. Other
incentives for early payment could include small gifts and discounts on future orders that the
customers may have. The business then may shorten the credit terms it allows for account customers.
Thus Reducing the number of days that a customer can take to pay its invoice, this will speed up cash
inflow into the business as it recieves cash from its sales much sooner. Factoring, a short term source
of borrowing for a business. IT enables a business to raise the funds immediately by selling accounts
receivable at a discount to a firm that specialises in collecting accounts recievable (a finance or even
factoring buiness). Factoring is an important source of short term finance because the business will
recieve up to 90% of the totaly amount of

Harm Reduction Essay
According to the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control (BCDC, 2013), harm reduction aims to
keep people safe and minimize death, disease, and injury from high risk behaviour. Harm reduction
involves a variety of support services and strategies to improve the knowledge, skills and resources for
individuals and their families to create a healthier and safer community (BCDC, 2013). This paper
will discuss the applicability of community health standards to harm reduction practice, as well as the
determinants of health which increase the incidence of harm to the targeted audience. COUNTERfit, a
women s harm reduction program will be discussed in terms of significance to the aggregate
population and evaluated through an examination of epidemiological data, prevalence data, and best
practice. According to the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA, 2015), harm reduction is a public
response, in which nurses have a vital role in by highlighting safety promotion to prevent death, injury
and disability, as well as treating clients respectfully and in a non judgmental manner, despite drug use
or engagement in other high risk practices. Nurses who are involved in a harm reduction strategy
provide essential health services to a highly demoted population, using a comprehensive nursing
framework that focuses on client centered relationship building and primary nursing care activities
that are facilitated by a harm reduction theory with the core principles of health promotion (Lightfoot,

Life Goals
Goals are important because goals open a path to where a person is going and wants to achieve in life.
Also, goals can help a person to stay focus on things that I want to have in the future. A goal to get an
education is essential in life for it can lead to a prosperous future. To have a secure life after college, I
will need to get a stable job. Being part of a community, I would want to send awareness to the young
adults on doing the right things. The goals I want to achieve are to earn a college degree that I am
happy to have, have a job that will help me get the life that I want, and to help young adults to make
the right decisions.
My primary goal is to earn a degree that I am happy to have. The degree that I would want to have is
bachelor s in computer science because ever since I was a kid, I have always admired computers.
Growing up I have been more attached to computers, and I am inspired to know more about
computers such as how to solve technical problems or create applications for better efficiency.

that can grant me the things that I want and need. Being able to help young adults make the right
decisions are just as important because it can lead to a brighter future. Knowing what I want to
achieve gives me assurance in life, but I can only accomplish it if I work hard for it. Goals are a path
to accomplishing dreams that person desires to have. I believe that anyone can achieve their goals by
being positive through good or bad times, sacrificing something for better future, changing is also a

Theda Bara, Mortica Addams
Throughout modern history there have been certain characters that personify the very essence of Goth,
for instance Theda Bara [1885 1995], Mortica Addams in the 1960s TV series The Addams Family,
Italian heiress Marchesa Luisa Casati [1881 1957], to more recent iconic Goths like Helena Bonham
Carter and maverick dresser Daphne McGuinness, which has helped inspire individuals and the
movement, to create their own persona and sense of the gothic style. The Goth subculture can be
broadly divided into various subsets which have there own unique characteristics for instance Cyber
Goth, Gothic Lolita and Fetish Goth. In the early days of the movement in the 1980s and 1990s, the
Goth subculture fashion drawing heavily on the early fetish, bondage and S M style for example
straps, buckles, zips, waistcoats, frock coats, corsets, gowns, thigh high stiletto boots and hairstyles
like backcombing and the Deathawk, take some influence from the punk movement. Ian Astbury 1997
describes the early fashion characteristics for the beginning of the Goth culture in the eighties and
nineties; For the male ... black spiky hair and a black leather jacket. For the women ... black fishnets,
black leather thigh high boots ... dark makeup and the big black spiky hair (History of Goth:2016).
The traditional materials for the Gothic style includes lace, brocade, leather, velvet, however modern
Goths within the various subsets have created new materials such as rubber and PVC to create their
own version of the aesthetics. It could be said Gothic punks like Siouxsie Sioux, Joy Dividson, Peter

Maytag Strategic Analysis
I. Executive Summary
Maytag Corporation was founded in 1893 by Fred L Maytag and two other men. The company built
its first washing machine in 1907. From there the company quickly expanded into a national
corporation. With the sweeping globalization movement of the 1990 s, Maytag has attempted to
establish a presence as a global competitor in the appliance industry.
As the company has tried to establish itself in the developing global marketplace, it has had
difficulties. Not only were consumers taste and preferences changing in the domestic market, but the
company needed to develop products that would appeal to the new global markets. Maytag will need a
great deal of money to make these large changes.

Technological forces also made a very large change in the mid 90s. With Microsoft s launch of the
first user friendly Windows program, home computer usage began to increase. Also Al Gore helped
the world wide web launch during this time frame. With access to the internet, companies were also
able to use electronic data interchange (EDI) to help make purchase orders, schedule delivers and
other functions that are available when companies share data. Maytag also at this time is using fuzzy
logic in appliances. More technology will continue to be required in appliances as time moves on.
Porter s five forces are used to determine the competitive intensity and attractiveness of a market.
These are close forces that affect a company s ability to make a profit and serve customers. If any of
these forces change, a company must reassess its marketplace. The five forces include: the threat of
substitute products, the threat of the entry of new competitors, the intensity of competitive rivalry, the
bargaining power of customers and the bargaining power of suppliers.
Porter s five forces can be used to analyze Maytag. First, the threat of substitute products is low. The
only substitute for a washing machine is a large sink and a great deal of manual labor. Many of the
appliances have substitutes, but because those substitutes are so old and outdated there is not a threat
from them.
Second, the threat of entry of

The Importance Of Gross National Happiness
Before I proceed into the depths of my presentation today, I want you as people to think about the
following questions. Focusing solely on yourself as a productive member of society rather than a
businessman. Have you ever wondered why your favourite park is demolished to peices in order to
build houses or expand roadways? Have you ever felt that your volunteer work is not appreciated or
valued anymore? Have you ever felt that your most productive days in the workplace come from a
foundation of happiness. Hello, my name is Shelby Ward and I am here to present my findings of why
Gross National Happiness is a superior and more effective way to measure a Country s overall well
being.
Currently, the widely accepted measurement of the economic success of a country is found solely in a
number. A country s Gross Domestic Product or GDP. GDP follows the interaction of goods and
services with regards to their production and consumption. By measuring consumer, government and
industry spending along with the balance of trade, the GDP is a reliable indicator of economic health.
Many economists suggest that this is the only way to measure, however as reliable as it is, GDP only
measures one thing Money. For many, an economy s health is determined by several factors. Simply
put, there are more important things to consider like happiness, for example.
First off. Gross Domestic Product is solely and number and speaks nothing about citizens overall well
being. GDP awards events

The Mysterious Death Of Mary Rogers And The Market Revolution
The Mysterious Death of Mary Rogers and the Market Revolution The Mysterious Death of Mary
Rogers, written by Amy Gilman Srebnick is about the unsolved mystery of Mary Rogers. Mary
Rogers worked at a broadway tobacco shop. She was called cigar girl. In the 1840 s it was very
shameful for a young lady like Mary Roger to work at a cigar shop because but in a way she made the
shop well known. She also managed her mother s boarding house at 126 Nassau Street. Mary was the
youngest child. She was young, unmarried, and beautiful. Mary also had a lover, Daniel Payne. Mary
Rogers was only 20 when she went missing. On July 28, 1841 Mary Rogers body was discovered
floating near the shore of the hudson river with visible signs of violence. A report by two jurors
indicated that Mary had been gagged, tied, raped by several men, and finally strangled (Srebnick 18).
Dr.Cook confirmed that Mary had not drowned, frothy blood was still issuing from her mouth and her
face was suffused with dark, bruised blood and had swollen veins (Srebnick 18). Once her body was
found there were many theories as to how she died. The New Jersey coroner determined strangulation.
The New York coroner determined she drowned. Another witness confessed while on her deathbed
that it was due to an abortion. Mary Rogers death is still a mystery today. Payne was a prime suspect,
being that he was her lover. Several weeks after Mary s death, on Friday October 8, 1841, Payne was

Lab Report On The Mass Of Actual Aspirin ( Acetylsalicylic...
Abstract: This experiment utilizes skills of titration in order to find the percent mass of actual aspirin
(acetylsalicylic acid) in store bought aspirin. Two steps and two kinds of titrations are used. First,
approximately 0.1 M NaOH solution was standardized using titration with KHP. KHP was used
because it does not absorb moisture when it is stored, and it is soluble in water. The reaction that takes
place in this reaction is a 1:1 mole ratio reaction. The titration determines the volume of NaOH
solution needed to completely react with the known amount of KHP. This makes the calculation of
molarity of NaOH solution fairly easy. The average molarity calculated was 0.09897 M. The final part
of the experiment is a titration to indicate the amount of acetylsalicylic acid present in approximately
0.5 g of store bought aspirin. The volume of 0.09897 M NaOH solution indicated the moles of NaOH
that reacted with the aspirin. The reaction between NaOH and acetylsalicylic acid is a 1:1 mole ratio
reaction. The calculated mass of acetylsalicylic acid was 0.3963g. This was divided by the initial
amount of aspirin measured (0.4976g), and multiplied by 100 to give the percent mass. This value is
79.66%. This particular experiment may not be very accurate. Specifically, only two standardization
trials were counted. This may cause a less accurate measurement of NaOH solution molarity,
ultimately leading to an inaccurate percent mass of acetylsalicylic acid.

Voter Identification Dbq
Among many political issues in the election seasons of 2012 and 2016, voter identification has
become a prominent talking point among candidates and subsequently all of America. Voter
identification laws require that prospective voters to show some form of state provided identification
in order to be able to cast a ballot. The ones who create these laws proclaim that they are in order to
reduce voter fraud in elections, but the real purpose is something much more sinister. The true reason
so many people support voter identification laws is because they suppress minorities from voting,
usually helping the Republican party. Minorities have a harder time acquiring valid identification, and
therefore are more negatively impacted by these laws. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Voter identification laws are made specifically in order to stop certain people from voting, and hurt the
candidates that they would have otherwise voted for. This can be seen from an analysis of where the
voter identification laws have been passed and how they have affected the winners of elections.
Source E cites a Washington Post article that draws a direct line towards voter identification laws and
Republican legislatures. The article says, Where these laws are enacted, the influence of Democrats
and liberals wanes and the power of Republicans grows... What they are really saying is that
Republicans pass these laws to suppress Democratic voters, so they can be voted in again in the next
election. It is a widely known fact that more minorities vote Democrat, so these Republican
lawmakers try to stop some of the minorities from voting by passing these identification laws. This
perpetuates the unfair balance of power in our seemingly democratic nation, and makes it so the white
man stays in power while the minorities do not have a voice. This problem is also addressed in the
novel Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, where the white man s power is
unchecked while the minorities have no voice. Although written in a very different time, it can be
argued that many racist views held long ago are still present in modern America. One such example of
this continued racism is

Mormon Discrimination
We do not need to look any further than the Book of Mormon to find historical examples of exclusion

The feelings of being better than, was prevalent.
More recently, we have the question of discrimination in relation to a policy that Brigham Young
announced (in the year 1852), restricting men of black African descent from priesthood ordination.
This announcement also disallowed black men and women from participating in temple endowments
and sealing ordinances. Personally, I am not clear on the motivation or justification for this more

The Culture Of The Minoan Art
The Minoan civilization were forerunners of the ancient Greeks and they were a successful
resourceful society. Living on the island of Crete, the Minoans livelihood depended on the sea,
agriculture, and trading. The bravery and the agility of bull leaping plays an integral part in the
Minoan culture and the bull is also reflective throughout their art. Additionally, religion also played an
important role in the Minoan culture and this was evident in their artistic creations. Actually, the
Minoan art communicates a society of high spirited people, who adapted well to their surrounding
environment. As a matter of fact, the Minoans were remarkable engineers, building complex structures
like the palace at Knossos with dozens of rooms and corridors centered around a central courtyard,
without protective walls. More importantly, the Minoans were known for their wet frescoes, the
application of painting colored tints on the interior plastered walls of the palace. This type of Minoan
fresco presents a three dimensional effect, like elegant forms represented in an impressionistic manner.
Painting under the time constraints of the drying plaster, allowed for inventiveness, freedom, and
graceful lines, which was new to the art. More often than not, the paintings were tailored into a frame
of geometric shapes. The frescoes showed how the Minoans viewed the world, their cultural beliefs,
rituals, artistic beauty, elegance, physical gracefulness, and how they lived in harmony

Disadvantages Of Job Fairs
Job seekers typically search corporate websites first during the job search process. Posting jobs on
company websites casts a broad net, capturing the interest of the largest possible talent pool. Potential
employees are instantly exposed to company highlights, diversity information, employee benefits, and
work life balance programs (Cascio, 2016). Career fairs are typically industry specific which
automatically refines the talent pool. Most career fairs require an upfront participation fee however,
companies can discern qualified candidates from unqualified candidates rather quickly and save an
exorbitant amount of recruitment expenses (Career Trend, 2017). Also, this platform generates high
applicant flow. External recruitment allows companies to choose from a talent pool who could have
been recently trained or educated therefore having up to date knowledge and skills (Cascio, 2016).
Because external candidates have not been exposed to office politics and office norms they are more
likely to accept change and innovation (Cascio, 2016). Lastly, external recruitment provides a
convenient way to satisfy job place diversity requirements through hiring minorities and women
(Cascio, 2016). DISADVANTAGES OF RECRUITMENT ADVERTISING AND CAREER FAIRS
Several issues arise due to the large talent pool attracted from posting open positions on company
websites. Often times, applicants have an incomplete and/or inaccurate understanding of what the job

Essay on Theory Of Knowledge
Theory Of Knowledge In today s society, science is regarded as being the most trusted form of
knowledge, leading to many claiming it to be the supreme form of knowledge. To investigate whether
or not this is justified we must compare science to other forms/areas of knowledge and consider what
they each contribute. The strongest argument science has to claim this title, is the objectivity and
empirical nature of its method and in particular its verifying processes; mainly based on inductive and
deductive reasoning. Modern science is closely related to inductive reasoning and is presented as a
distinctive feature of scientific activity today. Induction works by verification: correspondence ...

The most prolific of these adapted verification processes are the Hypothetico deductive model, a
modern formulation associated with famous scientists such as Popper and Hemple. It works by using a
combination of both verification techniques, claiming that what distinguishes scientific hypothesis
from a non scientific hypothesis is not its origin, but the formers capacity to stand up to testing. The
name comes from the claim that the starting point is the hypothesis, from which we can predict that
particular events will occur under particular circumstances. This prediction is a deduction from the
initial hypothesis, and if events occur as predicted then the hypothesis is confirmed. Confirmation of
the hypothesis is inductive, simply because if the hypothesis holds true x number of times, we claim
that it always will hold true. This confirmation of the hypothesis process is the part of the model that
encompasses inductive reasoning, as when using this method one only has access to a limited number
of events. Although the Hypothetico model was developed to incorporate advantages of both types of
verifications, by using inductive reasoning as confirmation processes, it is still affected by the
fundamental flaws of inductivism and basic criticism of the original scientific model. Questions such

The Stages Of An Unreflective Thinker
Critical thinking is being able to evaluate an issue or situation to form a judgment. Having the ability
to think clearly and rationally, being able to have an argument and understand the main concept and
question any doubts you have and making your own conclusion. Being a good critical thinker can help
you in a lot of ways professionally and personally. Employers often want to see someone that can
think rationally and that is able to make their business grow and develop they want someone that will
take initiative in crucial situations. In our personal lives, it is important so we learn how to distinguish
the main facts about an argument and learn to analyze the problem and make a conclusion of what
needs to be done to help solve and prevent any future problems. According to Linda Elder and Richard
Paul, there are six stages of a critical thinker the unreflective thinker, the challenged thinker, the
beginning thinker, the advanced thinker, and finally the accomplished thinker which is where we
would all want to be in. (The Critical Thinking Community , 2010) Stage one the unreflective thinker
is simply someone that is unaware of what role thinking is playing in their lives. I think we are all
born as an unreflective thinker and some people don t know the useful conception of what thinking
really is and they don t develop better thinking skills and end up dying the same way. Being an
unreflective thinker means that you know you have a problem but don t take the time or don t

Classical Liberalism And The Enlightenment
Paper #1: Classical Liberalism
Classical liberalism is the transition from focusing on government to focusing on the rights of
individuals. This transition came about during the time of the Enlightenment in the eighteenth century.
The Enlightenment period was when man started to have more faith in his own reasoning. People
began to look for evidence on their beliefs themselves and to find proof on these beliefs, so that they
could come up with their own opinions on things. One way that they did this was by going back and
rereading Roman and Greek texts and retranslating these texts. This new way of thinking also caused
the Protestant Reformation to occur. Some of the most influential Enlightenment writers were John
Locke, Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, and the people of France s National Constituent Assembly.
John Locke was one of the most influential writers during the Enlightenment period, and was the first
Enlightenment Thinker . Locke is the author of the Two Treatises and believed that every person was
born with natural rights such as: life, liberty, and property (Locke). These rights were meant for
everyone, and not just the nobility or wealthy. Locke uses references from the Bible throughout the
Two Treatises stating that God created man without any state of inferiority (Locke). This disproves the
idea of Divine Right given from God that many countries in Europe had been participating in. John
Locke also discussed the importance of The Beginning of

How Does Paton Use Metaphors In Cry The Beloved Country
In 1948, apartheid was enacted by the all white national party in South Africa. The purpose was to
separate whites from non whites, and to decrease the power and success of non whites. In the 20th
century novel Cry, The Beloved Country by Alan Paton, he uses metaphors to emphasize how the
suffering of tribal people have both positive and negative consequences on their moral character. Their
development of morality can create or mend a division in society. Possessing a strong moral
foundation provides the ability to face personal challenges. Cry, The Beloved Country chronicles the
emotional journey Stephen Kumalo takes to cope with the sin he faces, internally and externally. The
trial of his son, Absalom, for the murder of Arthur Jarvis, poses as a spiritual trial for Kumalo himself.
Paton uses anaphora in Kumalo s thoughts to reiterate how hard it is for him to speak when he sees his
son, Yes, indeed I shall tell her. Yes, indeed, I shall take her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Absalom falls victim to temptation in Johannesburg, and turns to criminal ways. John reveals his
apathy towards the chief, and describes how his loyalties lie with Johannesburg: It is breaking apart,
your tribal society. It is here in Johannesburg that the new society is being built (67). John manipulates
people in Johannesburg, and stirs up the crowds to cause unrest simply because he craves attention.
He goes so far as to abandon his people. Absalom represents Kumalo s fear of misguidance and
insufficiency, which causes Kumalo to feel guilt and responsibility over the sentence his son receives.
John represents Kumalo s fear of blasphemy, corruption, and selfishness, as John abandons all of his
morals in order to have power in Johannesburg. Kumalo separates himself from his brother and son to

Lawrence s Influence On Aqaba
Lawrence exhibited his innovative leadership during the attack on Aqaba as he depleted the Ottoman
defenses, therefore bolstering the Allied Powers. Aqaba was a strategic location that provided essential
resources for Turkish troops in Northwestern Arabia. Lawrence later wrote that A[q]aba s special
value to the Turks was that, in their hands, it might, when they pleased, be constituted as a threat on
the right flank of the British army (Wilson 398). Just as Aqaba was valuable for the Allies, it could
also prove to be detrimental to the British, given its location near their Suez Canal forces. While
searching for access to the Aqaba Ma an supply route and having made significant progress toward
Aqaba, Lawrence encountered Auda abu Tayi. Lawrence recognized Auda s unique situation in ...

E. Lawrence fulfilled his role to both Britain and Arab tribesmen on securing the capture of
Damascus. His presence in Syria no longer necessary, he returned to England a hero. However, his
advocacy for the Arabs did not end; he continued to fight for the Arabs rights to control the land they
so valiantly fought for. The Sykes Picot agreement was a pact settled by the Allied powers, parceling
Syria out to European Allies. Lawrence leveraged his popular status to gain political influence, and
worked with the Allies when they sought to fairly separate the land. This redistribution of land taken
from the Arab tribesmen is identified as a major contributing cause for the contemporary conflicts in
the Middle East. Just as T.E. Lawrence followed Britain s tradition of influencing other cultures during
the age of imperialism, other contemporaries such as the explorer Richard Burton also assimilated into

across Asia and Africa, going so far as to travel through Mecca in Arab garb. None, however, was

Total quality management can be summarized as a management system for a customer focused

Love In Romeo And Juliet
Love is a powerful thing and can be viewed in many different ways. This is expressed in the tragedy
of Romeo of Juliet written by William Shakespeare. This is the tragedy of two lovers who struggle to
find ease in their life as they are in two opposing families. In the play Romeo and Juliet, by William
Shakespeare, the major characters have very different views of love that they use to their advantage.
Lord Capulet sets Juliet up with Paris for marriage which shows that he has trouble understanding
what love is. He even told his wife that unworthy as she is, that we have wrought so worthy a
gentleman to be her bride? (3.5.149 150). Lord Capulet expresses a lot of anger here because Juliet
won t accept what he set er up with. This shows that Lord Capulet doesn t understand true love and
that it is just about social status and looks. He is so fed up with Juliet that he even insults her saying
that she should hang thee, young baggage, disobedient wretch (3.5.166). He is continually angry that
Juliet can t accept her fate that is being with Paris as her husband. He may not know about Romeo and
Juliet being together but he still doesn t give her a choice. Lord Capulet s finite view of how love
works are not right and he uses it as a tool to build the family that he wants. Kersten 2 Romeo s view
of love in the story is very different from what Lord Capulet thinks of it. In the beginning of the book,
he asks himself Is love a tender thing? It is too rough, too rude, too

The cabdriver said himself he was a peace abiding person, but he could still turn into a Muslim

2007). This proves that even though we ve taken precautionary measures as a nation to protect the

advances in the world. We re The Land of the Free , we can t refrain from immigration if immigrants

we can only control protect ours. Countering Terrorism was a great book that I would recommend to

made or tried to make in order to protect our country from the threat of terrorism. It shows some that
the result of a bad event happening puts blame on the intelligence system as well as the intelligence
system causing themselves to look bad by the choices that they make.

Essays Programming Languages
Programming languages are a set of instructions or grammatical rules, which are used to make
applications and software on computers (Beal). There are many programming languages, which are
used extensively in modern day computer science, some of which are C++, Python, HTML,

calculations and to perform repetitive tasks with ease. These languages are one of the core components

The Epic of Gilgamesh and Sumerian Culture Essay
The Epic of Gilgamesh and Sumerian Culture The Epic of Gilgamesh is generally regarded as the
greatest literature about tales of a great king. The Epic of Gilgamesh served to show us a lot of things.
The time period of BCE is very blurry, and this story attempts to describe many different things in not
only Sumerian beliefs, but also Sumerian s culture as a whole. Like many stories from BCE the truth
itself is questionable, even though a lot of the information is fact. The factual information that
Gilgamesh teaches us about Sumerian Civilization is that had had many craftsman and artistic skills,
and also a strong belief in Gods. Gilgamesh is introduced as knowing all things and countries

This is proof of the Sumerian architectural abilities. The architecture in Mesopotamia are considered
to have been contemporary with the founding of the Sumerian cities, but there was some complexity
in the architectural design during this Protoliterate period (c. 3400 c. 2900 BC). This is shown in the
design of many religious buildings. Typical temples of the Protoliterate period both the platform type
and the type built at ground level are, however, much more elaborate both in planning and ornament.
The interior was decorated with cones sunk into the wall, covered in bronze. Most cities were simple
in structure, but the ziggurat was one of the world s first complex architectural structures. The
Sumerian temples, called ziggurats was a small brick house that the god was supposed to visit
periodically. This house, however, was set on a brick platform, which became larger and taller as time
progressed. Along with showing many types of Sumerian craftsmanship, the epic shows the strong
belief in many gods. All through out the story Gilgamesh comes in contact with many gods. But even
before the contact with the gods, there was talk about Gilgamesh being created by them. When the
Gods created him they gave him a perfect body...Shamash...endowed him with beauty, Adad endowed

Analytical Essay On Night By Elie Wiesel
I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We
must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the
tormentor, never the tormented. (Elie Wiesel) The book Night by Elie Wiesel tells his story of trying to
survive in a concentration camp during the holocaust. Family is an important part of the story because
it shows us that family can be what keeps some people alive, family becomes important when things
get rough, and that once you lose your humanity family means nothing.
First and foremost, family is important when things get rough. In the beginning of the book the Nazis
were rounding up Jews in the Ghettos. The families in the Ghettos did their best to stick together but
some families were broken apart. When Elie and his father get to the concentration camp they do their
best to stay together. Elie says he s 18 and his dad says that he is 40. It keeps them alive and together.

Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee and
Atticus Finch is head of the throne over Joe Gargery of Great Expectations and Chlomo Wiesel of
Night. I believe that Atticus Finch is an astoundingly well adjusted father for many reasons. First of
all, he was a single parent that managed to make time for Jem and Scout, his two children. He is also a
courageous, generous, forgiving, and honest man. Atticus Finch is a single parent working an
exceptionally hard job to bring in enough income to pay his maid and supply the needs for his
children. He is away most of the day at the courthouse defending his clients. Although his job
sometimes required long hours, he still made time to read to his daughter at bedtime and pass a ball
with his son. Therefore, Atticus Finch of To Kill a Mockingbird is the better father over Joe Gargery of
Great Expectations and Chlomo Wiesel of Night because of his courageousness, generosity,
forgiveness, and honesty.
Atticus shows true courage by trying every way to help others who were in the need of it. First of all,
it is courageous of Atticus to take the Tom Robinson case. Even his own family disagreed of taking
the case because of the bias. He takes many risks when taking the Tom Robinson case. He risks the
chance of critization by the people that live in the Maycomb County. Mrs. Dubose criticizes him when

refugees. The purpose of this briefing note is to present recommendations regarding the resettlement
of Syrian refugees in Canada, as there is a need for improved health and social support services. Social
workers in particular have a crucial role in the resettlement and successful integration of Syrian
refugees in Canada.
Background Information and Summary of Key Points

their lives (Thomas Bernard Moriah, 2007).
Recommendations
Improve access to information on how to navigate necessary health and social services.
Offer health and social services in the client s own language, which may involve hiring Syrian
refugees with lived experiences, interpreters, and/or cultural brokers.
Implement mandatory education and training programs on the complex nature of resettlement and
integration to ensure health care and social service providers are practicing in a culturally competent

Dunshy V. Court Case Summary
A contract is considered a legally binding agreement. A valid contract is an agreement that is binding
and enforceable. A contract is not enforced if one of the parties involved has a lack of capacity. When
lack of capacity is determiend a contract is voidable. A contract signed by a minor can be avoided
because anyone under the age of 18 is a minor and minors are not legally capable of signing contracts.
Since Alex signed the contract at the age of 16, it is not a binding contract.
Quasi contracts are required by the court to prevent unjust enhancements when there is a dispute over

The Reds Invade Afghanistan

In late December of 1979, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R.) troops began streaming into
Afghanistan by the thousands, marking the beginning of what would turn out to be a 10 year attempt
to support the Afghan Communist party that had taken power (Britannica, Soviet invasion of

America(U.S.) regarding the U.S.S.R. s invasion of Afghanistan. The U.S. did not have a good

The Movie Whale Rider By Niki Caro
In the movie Whale Rider by Niki Caro, the theme is subjugation of women and the main character
Paikea manages to surpass the patriarchal beliefs so she is a winner which is good for the community
and that makes for a happy ending.
The main event of this movie is when the whales answer Paikea s call for help and end up stranded on
the shore. The locals are unable to move the whales, after many attempts they give up and walk away
with sadness. Then, Pai climbs up on the whale and rides it out to sea, making the rest of the whales
follow. At that moment she is unafraid of dying and goes underwater with the whale. The whales mean
a lot to their community because they believe that their ancestor Paikea was saved by the whales.
In the movie, Paikea decides to live up to her grandfather s expectations and to do so she challenges
the tradition by following her own path as a leader. An example of her determination is when she

The Causes Of Famine
Famine
With food production at an all time high, starvation should be at an all time low, but that is far from
the case. Unfortunately, famine is currently one of the main causes of death in third world countries.
In this essay I will look at the reasons for the famine, the consequences and compare the ideas of food
aid and sustainable livelihoods.
Famine causes malnutrition and death, in 2011, 260 000 people died of famine in Sudan and Ethiopia.
Over half of these were children. (Devi 2017) There is not one cause of famine in third world
countries, but instead multiple factors.
The idea that famine is due to food shortages is false, the world produces more food than we need, but
unfortunately those who need it do not have access to it. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

crop is successful. (Lennart Olsson 1993) This contributed to the famine as farmers are often in debt
as many crops fail due to the drought. They then cannot afford to by food for their family.
Food aid has become an important part to help the famine in third world countries.
But unfortunately, there is evidence to show that the food aid needs improvement.
A few of the problems said to be from food aid is that the is a) not enough, b) unevenly distributed or
c) is from the donors market.
In 2007 Sudan had a food aid shortfall of $120 million US dollars. (Wahlberg 2008) Because of this
the WFP had to cut food rations and send the aid to smaller areas. This leads into the next issue, where
the food is unevenly distributed. International media has a huge influence on what crisis get funding,
such as the tsunami in 2004 got such a large media coverage that there was a lot of funding, but in
other disasters, especially ones in the middle east, media coverage isn t as high therefore

man to quilt and display. In January 2015 at Man Made: Contemporary Male Quilters, which took
place at the Craft Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles which was curated by CAFAM Executive Director

be tamed and used to breakdown walls of the gender stereotypes that exist even within the art world
that does so much to bring together a still very segregated society between men and women. Michael
James, one of the leaders of the art quilt movement that blew up in the 1970s, was one of the first to

dominated by women. Women who felt this craft helped to form a sense of community between them
and there female friends immediately criticized him, saying his ideas would likely strip the craft of its

Pascal Boyer s Explanation Of Religion Summary
First of all, Pascal Boyer begins by giving common explanations of religion, all of them have some
logic and good understanding. Also, he introduces by saying that psychology, anthropology, and
neuroscience offer more empirical approach in acquiring and representing religious concepts. In fact,
he gives a table represented by Do s and Don ts in the study of religion, apparently what he wants us
to say and not say. He keeps saying the important that is our understanding of why religion is easy to
acquire and transmit by giving us what he thinks are the two main points of this statement, religion
does not activate particular capacity in the mind and religion and no religion are parts of our mental
equipment. He starts arguing that people defend their beliefs according to his view in what he call
sleep of reason interpretation. However, Boyer is not satisfactory at all with the sleep of reason
because some pieces of that information will have effect in some people but not others, and he express
that he could make up hundreds of such interesting and irrefutable beliefs that no one would ever
consider as a possible belief. Through the reading Pascal differs that all human beings do not have full
access to the way ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First of all, Boyer put on his writings many points of view about religion making me go sometimes
confused and of course feel different concepts about religion. Additionally, Boyer is able to present a
very dense network of theories which not only explains many religious phenomena but also sets them
in relation to each other. The integration of cognitive science research leads to a very realistic model
of how religious concepts are processed and communicated. Also, Boyer s account of the natural basis
of religion explains very well the persistence and re emergence of religion even in a secularized
environment, as well as the tensions between official and folk religion. In addition

Fathers are the most important part of the family as they take care of the children when they are
growing up, and they work day and night to pay for their studies and all of the other expenses. They
remain the guardian of the children until their deaths. They are also the most sincere persons to their
children. They suffer all of their life to ease the life of their children and save them from the hardships
that they experience in their life. Children feel safe in the presence of their father in their childhood.
Moreover, fathers also sacrifice the most important things in life for the betterment of their children.
These are all of the reasons that the most of the brands are targeting the feelings of compassion and
love of the fathers for their children nowadays. Toyota has also linked the relationship between the
father and the children in a very touchy way that it left everyone speechless in the super bowl who
witnessed their advertisement. The product of the ad was the newly launched model of the Toyota
Camry, which is the latest addition to the luxury cars market of the United States of America. The
marketing managers of the Toyota have recently changed the positioning of their brand in which they

Personification is used in dialogues like I love the way they sail over traffic jams. (p.34). The
personification identified in this sentence had to deal with sailing, a verb, traffic jams, a non living
thing, because personification deals with a nonliving object that can use actions in a sentence and
expresses that the things sail over traffic jams. Even though, sailing is only for boats. Imagery is used
in as dialogues like She had human features but her face was pale blue like a clear sky and just as
bright. She was luminous. Her puffy blond cloud shaped hair reminded me of golden cotton candy.

The Negative Effects Of Animal Testing
Animal testing has been around since 500 BC starting with dissecting animals in ancient greece.
French animal testers believed that animals were automata and could not feel pain or emotions. There
was no public objections to animal testing until the 19th century when there was an increase of
adopting domestic pets. Nowadays public opinion is split down the middle on whether or not animals
should be tested on. The animals are generally tested on for cosmetics, health, commercial,
biomedical, space and military purposes. People for animal testing think of it as a way to save human
and animal lives, and that there is no other way to get this good of data. They also believe that the
strict rules prevent any mistreatment of the animals. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With only using petri dishes scientists are not able to find all the affects, for example loss in eyesight
can not be tested with only using it on tissue sample(Kara Rogers). Animal testing benefits the animals
themselves too. The American Veterinary Medical Association actually supports animal testing, in
many cases the tests on animals have saved many species from becoming extinct like the california
condor, and the tamarins(American Association).
People opposed to animal testing will say that it is inhumane and cruel. Animals in the tests are said to
be force feed, and forced inhalation, they also are forced to have cosmetics dropped into their eyes to
see the outcome. The US Department of agriculture said that around 97,123 animals in 2010 suffered
during testing, and were not given antithetic. We can now test in other ways that do not include
animals, like in vitro testing. We can also use human volunteers, and only use enough that it does not
severely damage them. There are also computer simulations that will show how it affects the body.
Drugs that pass animal testing are not necessarily safe, like in the 1950 s a sleeping pill was shown to
cause birth defects even though it had been tested by animals.
Although the opposing side has many intriguing arguments, animal testing is still the most plausible
way to better the general health of the population. In order to better the conditions of the

Why Is Brian Mulroney Powerful
Throughout Canadian history there have been many influential political leaders in the past, but none
as powerful or significant as Brian Mulroney. Through political criticism, Brian Mulroney served as
the longest Prime Minister in Canada. All together Brian Mulroney was one of the best Prime
Ministers, but he was just misunderstood. He gave Canada Free Trade, which secured our economic
prosperity.
Brian Mulroney signed the Nunavut Settlement Agreement to secure Canada as a better country and a
better place to live. The settlement consisted of two things. The 1st thing that the settlement was
consisting of was the Arctic Islands and mainland Eastern Island. The 2nd thing the settlement
consisted of was the Belcher Island, and its association with the marine areas. The agreement that was
signed on July 9, 1993 was to create the new territory Nunavut which was established as a province
April 1, 1999. Brian helped Nunavut become a territory and helped Nunavut in their troubles in the
settlement. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

has ever had. Historically Conservative leaders oppose the initiative but this time Brian Mulroney was
for the initiative. Brian Mulroney said in his pre election that if it affects Canada, we will have none of
it. Mulroney later then proved that he is a man of his word and fixed this issue

The Narrative Techniques Used by Hitchcock in Rear Window...
The Narrative Techniques Used by Hitchcock in Rear Window
L.B. Jeffries is a high class magazine photographer for what seems to be a worldwide publication. In
Alfred Hitchcock s Rear Window , he is a temporarily wheelchair bound man and his voyeuristic side
appears later on in the film.
Rear Window depicts a 20th century New York in which fraudsters, murderers and salesmen all live
alongside each other. The story describes a man who broke his leg during a photography assignment.
He is, for the time being, stuck in a wheelchair with nothing to do but look at the neighbours through
his Rear Window . He hasn t seen the light of day since seven weeks ago.
Rear Window is one of Alfred ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This also shows that it is the start of the story. The window fills the whole frame of the shot. This is a
good way of setting the scene for the viewers. Old style joyous jazz music is played at the start a good
way of portraying happy times. The opening scene in Rear Window has no dialogue, leaving even
more of the viewers in a pool of anticipation. The scene highlights the fact that every single thing in
the film will be seen through that particular window.
Alfred Hitchcock s Rear Window is a great example of first rate camerawork. The camera is used as
the narrator and probably plays the biggest role within the film. At the start of the film, the camera is
used to pan around every single apartment within the inner city New York apartment block to
introduce the characters. Although the characters do not speak, they still play a major role in the film.
Alfred Hitchcock puts the viewers in the position of L.B Jeffries, making us all voyeurs. The camera is
used to tell the story, as there is very little dialogue in the film. Throughout nearly all of the film, only
one shot is used to tell the story, there are very few cuts. By doing it this way, Hitchcock is showing us
exactly what the character is seeing.
The cast of Rear Window includes Jimmy Stewart, the lovely Grace Kelly, Thelma Ritter, and

  • 2. Linguistic Genius Of Babies Book Review Patricia Kuhl s TED Talk lecture, The Linguistic Genius of Babies, is an overview of how infants as young as six months old are capable of discriminating between the units of all languages equally, but at ten months, infants tend to become better at distinguishing between units of their native language and worse at those of a foreign language. This shows that there is a critical period not just for language acquisition but also for the ability to acquire a second language. Therefore, parents who with for their children to have a bilingual advantage should expose infants to a second language as soon as possible. Noam Chomsky believed that humans are genetically designed with the capacity to learn language. Humans have a system of common rules and properties, called universal grammar, which allows us to learn any world language. It appears that Kuhl s research supports this theory. Kuhl exposed American infants, who had only been previously exposed to English, to Mandarin during the critical period for language acquisition. Babies exposed to both English and Mandarin showed equivalent statistics for language discrimination. This exposure alters the Language Acquisitions Device (LAD) in the brain and makes infants the citizens of the world, (Kuhl, 2010) Chomsky believed them to be, rather than the culture bound listeners, ... While humans are biologically designed to produce language, with exception of reasons of defect, there is still a time limit during which infants must be exposed to language or risk developmental delays. These delays are not just in the area of language acquisitions, but are related to other cognitive functions as well, as we saw in the example of Justin, the boy who was raised as a dog by his caregiver. Language acquisition is essential in the development of the ability to problem solve and to process and understand symbolic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

An example of this is the offer from insurance companies to be able to pay insurance premiums monthly instead of annually because of the excessively high costs. Another strategy commonly used is Discounts for the early payments , This is where a business may offer discounts to account customers for the early payment of their accounts to speed up cash inflow. This discount may be a little as 2 5%, but shows effective in terms of cash inflow as it gives incentive for the customers, Giving both the customer and business a gain in the financial situation. Other incentives for early payment could include small gifts and discounts on future orders that the customers may have. The business then may shorten the credit terms it allows for account customers. Thus Reducing the number of days that a customer can take to pay its invoice, this will speed up cash inflow into the business as it recieves cash from its sales much sooner. Factoring, a short term source of borrowing for a business. IT enables a business to raise the funds immediately by selling accounts receivable at a discount to a firm that specialises in collecting accounts recievable (a finance or even factoring buiness). With the sweeping globalization movement of the 1990 s, Maytag has attempted to establish a presence as a global competitor in the appliance industry. As the company has tried to establish itself in the developing global marketplace, it has had difficulties. The five forces include: the threat of substitute products, the threat of the entry of new competitors, the intensity of competitive rivalry, the bargaining power of customers and the bargaining power of suppliers. Porter s five forces can be used to analyze Maytag. First, the threat of substitute products is low. The only substitute for a washing machine is a large sink and a great deal of manual labor. • 9. The Importance Of Gross National Happiness Before I proceed into the depths of my presentation today, I want you as people to think about the following questions. Focusing solely on yourself as a productive member of society rather than a businessman. Have you ever wondered why your favourite park is demolished to peices in order to build houses or expand roadways? Have you ever felt that your volunteer work is not appreciated or valued anymore? Have you ever felt that your most productive days in the workplace come from a foundation of happiness. Hello, my name is Shelby Ward and I am here to present my findings of why Gross National Happiness is a superior and more effective way to measure a Country s overall well being. Currently, the widely accepted measurement of the economic success of a country is found solely in a number. A country s Gross Domestic Product or GDP. GDP follows the interaction of goods and services with regards to their production and consumption. By measuring consumer, government and industry spending along with the balance of trade, the GDP is a reliable indicator of economic health. Many economists suggest that this is the only way to measure, however as reliable as it is, GDP only measures one thing Money. For many, an economy s health is determined by several factors. Simply put, there are more important things to consider like happiness, for example. First off. Gross Domestic Product is solely and number and speaks nothing about citizens overall well being. In the 1840 s it was very shameful for a young lady like Mary Roger to work at a cigar shop because but in a way she made the shop well known. She also managed her mother s boarding house at 126 Nassau Street. Mary was the youngest child. She was young, unmarried, and beautiful. Mary also had a lover, Daniel Payne. Mary Rogers was only 20 when she went missing. On July 28, 1841 Mary Rogers body was discovered floating near the shore of the hudson river with visible signs of violence. A report by two jurors indicated that Mary had been gagged, tied, raped by several men, and finally strangled (Srebnick 18). Dr.Cook confirmed that Mary had not drowned, frothy blood was still issuing from her mouth and her face was suffused with dark, bruised blood and had swollen veins (Srebnick 18). Once her body was found there were many theories as to how she died. The New Jersey coroner determined strangulation. The New York coroner determined she drowned. Another witness confessed while on her deathbed that it was due to an abortion. Mary Rogers death is still a mystery today. Payne was a prime suspect, being that he was her lover. • 11. Lab Report On The Mass Of Actual Aspirin ( Acetylsalicylic... Abstract: This experiment utilizes skills of titration in order to find the percent mass of actual aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) in store bought aspirin. Two steps and two kinds of titrations are used. First, approximately 0.1 M NaOH solution was standardized using titration with KHP. KHP was used because it does not absorb moisture when it is stored, and it is soluble in water. The reaction that takes place in this reaction is a 1:1 mole ratio reaction. The titration determines the volume of NaOH solution needed to completely react with the known amount of KHP. This makes the calculation of molarity of NaOH solution fairly easy. The average molarity calculated was 0.09897 M. The final part of the experiment is a titration to indicate the amount of acetylsalicylic acid present in approximately 0.5 g of store bought aspirin. The volume of 0.09897 M NaOH solution indicated the moles of NaOH that reacted with the aspirin. The reaction between NaOH and acetylsalicylic acid is a 1:1 mole ratio reaction. The calculated mass of acetylsalicylic acid was 0.3963g. This was divided by the initial amount of aspirin measured (0.4976g), and multiplied by 100 to give the percent mass. This value is 79.66%. This particular experiment may not be very accurate. Specifically, only two standardization trials were counted. This may cause a less accurate measurement of NaOH solution molarity, ultimately leading to an inaccurate percent mass of acetylsalicylic acid. Introduction ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Voter Identification Dbq Among many political issues in the election seasons of 2012 and 2016, voter identification has become a prominent talking point among candidates and subsequently all of America. Voter identification laws require that prospective voters to show some form of state provided identification in order to be able to cast a ballot. The ones who create these laws proclaim that they are in order to reduce voter fraud in elections, but the real purpose is something much more sinister. The true reason so many people support voter identification laws is because they suppress minorities from voting, usually helping the Republican party. Minorities have a harder time acquiring valid identification, and therefore are more negatively impacted by these laws. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Voter identification laws are made specifically in order to stop certain people from voting, and hurt the candidates that they would have otherwise voted for. This can be seen from an analysis of where the voter identification laws have been passed and how they have affected the winners of elections. Source E cites a Washington Post article that draws a direct line towards voter identification laws and Republican legislatures. The article says, Where these laws are enacted, the influence of Democrats and liberals wanes and the power of Republicans grows... What they are really saying is that Republicans pass these laws to suppress Democratic voters, so they can be voted in again in the next election. It is a widely known fact that more minorities vote Democrat, so these Republican lawmakers try to stop some of the minorities from voting by passing these identification laws. This perpetuates the unfair balance of power in our seemingly democratic nation, and makes it so the white man stays in power while the minorities do not have a voice. This problem is also addressed in the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, where the white man s power is unchecked while the minorities have no voice. Although written in a very different time, it can be argued that many racist views held long ago are still present in modern America. One such example of this continued racism is ... Living on the island of Crete, the Minoans livelihood depended on the sea, agriculture, and trading. The bravery and the agility of bull leaping plays an integral part in the Minoan culture and the bull is also reflective throughout their art. Additionally, religion also played an important role in the Minoan culture and this was evident in their artistic creations. Actually, the Minoan art communicates a society of high spirited people, who adapted well to their surrounding environment. As a matter of fact, the Minoans were remarkable engineers, building complex structures like the palace at Knossos with dozens of rooms and corridors centered around a central courtyard, without protective walls. More importantly, the Minoans were known for their wet frescoes, the application of painting colored tints on the interior plastered walls of the palace. This type of Minoan fresco presents a three dimensional effect, like elegant forms represented in an impressionistic manner. Painting under the time constraints of the drying plaster, allowed for inventiveness, freedom, and graceful lines, which was new to the art. I believe that kids in high school or middle school can benefit from using social media. Kids in high school should definitely be able to access social media and will benefit from it because it can help them fit in. If all the kids in the school are active on social media, they support each other in friendship. It lets every kid be a part of things. Social media can be a great way to connect with others, friends old and new. Kids can even ask teachers questions. Another reason why social media is good for kids is that it keeps them up to date on the news. Every time I go on Facebook, I see news events from around the world. • 19. Disadvantages Of Job Fairs Job seekers typically search corporate websites first during the job search process. Posting jobs on company websites casts a broad net, capturing the interest of the largest possible talent pool. Potential employees are instantly exposed to company highlights, diversity information, employee benefits, and work life balance programs (Cascio, 2016). Career fairs are typically industry specific which automatically refines the talent pool. Most career fairs require an upfront participation fee however, companies can discern qualified candidates from unqualified candidates rather quickly and save an exorbitant amount of recruitment expenses (Career Trend, 2017). Also, this platform generates high applicant flow. External recruitment allows companies to choose from a talent pool who could have been recently trained or educated therefore having up to date knowledge and skills (Cascio, 2016). Because external candidates have not been exposed to office politics and office norms they are more likely to accept change and innovation (Cascio, 2016). Lastly, external recruitment provides a convenient way to satisfy job place diversity requirements through hiring minorities and women (Cascio, 2016). • 21. Essay on Theory Of Knowledge Theory Of Knowledge In today s society, science is regarded as being the most trusted form of knowledge, leading to many claiming it to be the supreme form of knowledge. To investigate whether or not this is justified we must compare science to other forms/areas of knowledge and consider what they each contribute. The strongest argument science has to claim this title, is the objectivity and empirical nature of its method and in particular its verifying processes; mainly based on inductive and deductive reasoning. Modern science is closely related to inductive reasoning and is presented as a distinctive feature of scientific activity today. Induction works by verification: correspondence ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The most prolific of these adapted verification processes are the Hypothetico deductive model, a modern formulation associated with famous scientists such as Popper and Hemple. It works by using a combination of both verification techniques, claiming that what distinguishes scientific hypothesis from a non scientific hypothesis is not its origin, but the formers capacity to stand up to testing. The name comes from the claim that the starting point is the hypothesis, from which we can predict that particular events will occur under particular circumstances. This prediction is a deduction from the initial hypothesis, and if events occur as predicted then the hypothesis is confirmed. Confirmation of the hypothesis is inductive, simply because if the hypothesis holds true x number of times, we claim that it always will hold true. This confirmation of the hypothesis process is the part of the model that encompasses inductive reasoning, as when using this method one only has access to a limited number of events. Although the Hypothetico model was developed to incorporate advantages of both types of verifications, by using inductive reasoning as confirmation processes, it is still affected by the fundamental flaws of inductivism and basic criticism of the original scientific model. Having the ability to think clearly and rationally, being able to have an argument and understand the main concept and question any doubts you have and making your own conclusion. Being a good critical thinker can help you in a lot of ways professionally and personally. Employers often want to see someone that can think rationally and that is able to make their business grow and develop they want someone that will take initiative in crucial situations. In our personal lives, it is important so we learn how to distinguish the main facts about an argument and learn to analyze the problem and make a conclusion of what needs to be done to help solve and prevent any future problems. According to Linda Elder and Richard Paul, there are six stages of a critical thinker the unreflective thinker, the challenged thinker, the beginning thinker, the advanced thinker, and finally the accomplished thinker which is where we would all want to be in. (The Critical Thinking Community , 2010) Stage one the unreflective thinker is simply someone that is unaware of what role thinking is playing in their lives. I think we are all born as an unreflective thinker and some people don t know the useful conception of what thinking really is and they don t develop better thinking skills and end up dying the same way. • 23. Classical Liberalism And The Enlightenment Paper #1: Classical Liberalism Classical liberalism is the transition from focusing on government to focusing on the rights of individuals. This transition came about during the time of the Enlightenment in the eighteenth century. The Enlightenment period was when man started to have more faith in his own reasoning. People began to look for evidence on their beliefs themselves and to find proof on these beliefs, so that they could come up with their own opinions on things. One way that they did this was by going back and rereading Roman and Greek texts and retranslating these texts. This new way of thinking also caused the Protestant Reformation to occur. Some of the most influential Enlightenment writers were John Locke, Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, and the people of France s National Constituent Assembly. John Locke was one of the most influential writers during the Enlightenment period, and was the first Enlightenment Thinker . Locke is the author of the Two Treatises and believed that every person was born with natural rights such as: life, liberty, and property (Locke). These rights were meant for everyone, and not just the nobility or wealthy. Locke uses references from the Bible throughout the Two Treatises stating that God created man without any state of inferiority (Locke). This disproves the idea of Divine Right given from God that many countries in Europe had been participating in. John Locke also discussed the importance of The Beginning of ... In the 20th century novel Cry, The Beloved Country by Alan Paton, he uses metaphors to emphasize how the suffering of tribal people have both positive and negative consequences on their moral character. Their development of morality can create or mend a division in society. Possessing a strong moral foundation provides the ability to face personal challenges. Cry, The Beloved Country chronicles the emotional journey Stephen Kumalo takes to cope with the sin he faces, internally and externally. The trial of his son, Absalom, for the murder of Arthur Jarvis, poses as a spiritual trial for Kumalo himself. This is the tragedy of two lovers who struggle to find ease in their life as they are in two opposing families. In the play Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, the major characters have very different views of love that they use to their advantage. Lord Capulet sets Juliet up with Paris for marriage which shows that he has trouble understanding what love is. He even told his wife that unworthy as she is, that we have wrought so worthy a gentleman to be her bride? (3.5.149 150). Lord Capulet expresses a lot of anger here because Juliet won t accept what he set er up with. This shows that Lord Capulet doesn t understand true love and that it is just about social status and looks. He is so fed up with Juliet that he even insults her saying that she should hang thee, young baggage, disobedient wretch (3.5.166). He is continually angry that Juliet can t accept her fate that is being with Paris as her husband. He may not know about Romeo and Juliet being together but he still doesn t give her a choice. The U.S.S.R had increased the number of military and civilian advisors dramatically since the coup; the civilian advisors had taken managerial positions in the Afghan ministries (CIA, 1979, p. 8). These facts point to the possibility that the U.S.S.R. s dedication to controlling Afghanistan was steadfast and the military invasion would happen no matter if the U.S. supported the insurgents or not. On 19 December 1979 intelligence revealed the U.S.S.R. began moving massive amounts of men, supplies, and equipment (MacEachin, 2007). They were also conducting operations to secure routes into Afghanistan with troops that were already in the area (MacEachin, 2007). Reports began coming into the U.S.; however, analysts still doubted a massive invasion by the U.S.S.R. was possible (MacEachin, 2007). 22 December 1979 National Security Agency Director Vice Admiral Bobby Ray Inman reported to U.S. officials that the U.S.S.R. was undoubtedly going to invade Afghanistan within the next 72 hours (MacEachin, ... • 41. The Causes Of Famine Famine With food production at an all time high, starvation should be at an all time low, but that is far from the case. Unfortunately, famine is currently one of the main causes of death in third world countries. In this essay I will look at the reasons for the famine, the consequences and compare the ideas of food aid and sustainable livelihoods. Famine causes malnutrition and death, in 2011, 260 000 people died of famine in Sudan and Ethiopia. Over half of these were children. (Devi 2017) There is not one cause of famine in third world countries, but instead multiple factors. The idea that famine is due to food shortages is false, the world produces more food than we need, but unfortunately those who need it do not have access to it. ... This is due to the sheil system in place. This prevents small farmers from receiving money if their crop fails. This system is unfair as the sheil merchant sets the amount of interest, so they will receive money either way, unlike the farmers who will only receive a small amount if their crop is successful. (Lennart Olsson 1993) This contributed to the famine as farmers are often in debt as many crops fail due to the drought. They then cannot afford to by food for their family. Food aid has become an important part to help the famine in third world countries. But unfortunately, there is evidence to show that the food aid needs improvement. A few of the problems said to be from food aid is that the is a) not enough, b) unevenly distributed or c) is from the donors market. In 2007 Sudan had a food aid shortfall of $120 million US dollars. (Wahlberg 2008) Because of this the WFP had to cut food rations and send the aid to smaller areas. This leads into the next issue, where the food is unevenly distributed. International media has a huge influence on what crisis get funding, such as the tsunami in 2004 got such a large media coverage that there was a lot of funding, but in other disasters, especially ones in the middle east, media coverage isn t as high therefore ... • 46. The Negative Effects Of Animal Testing Animal testing has been around since 500 BC starting with dissecting animals in ancient greece. French animal testers believed that animals were automata and could not feel pain or emotions. There was no public objections to animal testing until the 19th century when there was an increase of adopting domestic pets. Nowadays public opinion is split down the middle on whether or not animals should be tested on. The animals are generally tested on for cosmetics, health, commercial, biomedical, space and military purposes. People for animal testing think of it as a way to save human and animal lives, and that there is no other way to get this good of data. They also believe that the strict rules prevent any mistreatment of the animals. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With only using petri dishes scientists are not able to find all the affects, for example loss in eyesight can not be tested with only using it on tissue sample(Kara Rogers). Animal testing benefits the animals themselves too. The American Veterinary Medical Association actually supports animal testing, in many cases the tests on animals have saved many species from becoming extinct like the california condor, and the tamarins(American Association). People opposed to animal testing will say that it is inhumane and cruel. Animals in the tests are said to be force feed, and forced inhalation, they also are forced to have cosmetics dropped into their eyes to see the outcome. The US Department of agriculture said that around 97,123 animals in 2010 suffered during testing, and were not given antithetic. We can now test in other ways that do not include animals, like in vitro testing. We can also use human volunteers, and only use enough that it does not severely damage them. There are also computer simulations that will show how it affects the body. Drugs that pass animal testing are not necessarily safe, like in the 1950 s a sleeping pill was shown to cause birth defects even though it had been tested by animals. Although the opposing side has many intriguing arguments, animal testing is still the most plausible way to better the general health of the population. In order to better the conditions of the ... Jeffries is a high class magazine photographer for what seems to be a worldwide publication. In Alfred Hitchcock s Rear Window , he is a temporarily wheelchair bound man and his voyeuristic side appears later on in the film. Rear Window depicts a 20th century New York in which fraudsters, murderers and salesmen all live alongside each other. The story describes a man who broke his leg during a photography assignment. This is a good way of setting the scene for the viewers. Old style joyous jazz music is played at the start a good way of portraying happy times. The opening scene in Rear Window has no dialogue, leaving even more of the viewers in a pool of anticipation. The scene highlights the fact that every single thing in the film will be seen through that particular window. Alfred Hitchcock s Rear Window is a great example of first rate camerawork. The camera is used as the narrator and probably plays the biggest role within the film. At the start of the film, the camera is used to pan around every single apartment within the inner city New York apartment block to introduce the characters. Although the characters do not speak, they still play a major role in the film. Alfred Hitchcock puts the viewers in the position of L.B Jeffries, making us all voyeurs. The camera is used to tell the story, as there is very little dialogue in the film. Throughout nearly all of the film, only one shot is used to tell the story, there are very few cuts.
