discipline referrals for students who attended the after school program regularly
for two years as compared to students who did not attend the after school program

fourth grade and 120 fifth grade students were used in this study (Tables 1.1 and

my hypothesis. After applying all my steps to the soda, when I put it through the
strainer the soda completely went through the strainer; there was nothing left
behind. Later after applying all my steps to the juice. i also put it through a strainer
and i ended up with the same result as the soda. The only liquid i didn t get a bad
result for was the milk. The milk went through the strainer and left behind this white
squishy looking material. It looked almost as if it were some type of white goo.

lumps left behind in the strainer from the milk are actually called casein . The
individual protein strands within the milk and the vinegar combine to make the

physical well beings regardless of its nature. Literature often manipulates this truth in

Wayson Choy and The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilmanare two
examples of

In both short stories, symbolism is used to portray the impending doom on the
characters physical state. This idea is clearly presented in The Yellow Wallpaper
by the image of the bed being nailed down to the ground and how that reflects her
isolation in the room. In the beginning of the story, the narrator despises the room
she is confined in. She is stuck in the room day in and day out all day [she] lies
here on this great immovable bed it is nailed down (p.337). The significance of the
bed being nailed down and immovable plays a great role in the narrator s physical
state: it signifies how the narrator is immovable and can not leave the room. Just
like the bed, the narrator is hypothetically nailed down to the ground, unable to
leave or rather do anything without the permission of her husband. Another
example of this takes place in The Jade Peony with the bamboo shoots dying of the
cold, just like the grandma. The whole household are strong believers of signs, so
after the death of the grandma her son went to her garden to look for a sign. He
then looked at the frost killed shoots and cringed: no, that can not be it (p.109). From
this point on we are given a hint of how the grandma will die, which is an important
detail for further understanding the character s physical state. For instance, while
understanding the cold killing the bamboo shoots, the son then realizes that
something his mother loved and cared for dearly died of the same way. Overall, the
two short stories share the impending doom of the character s physical state through

The Golden Rule is an ethical idea shared in various religious texts and different
ancient philosophers statements around the world, and it was paraphrased as What

argues in the fifth Chapter (Moral Disagreement) of his book Cosmopolitanism that
the Golden Rule is not as helpful as it might at first seem , and he gives several

Every year, thousands of international students attend colleges and universities in the
United States which requires them to adapt to a new environment. This often results
in a huge culture shock experience. Culture shock is defined as the outcome of stress
and tension resulting from contact with a new culture and the feelings of loss,
confusion and impotence, which is often due to loss of accustomed cultural cues and
social rules. This research focuses on the impact of culture and language, religion, and
personality on the adaptation of international students to the U.S. culture. It also
examines the adaptation process and culture shock experience of international
students in the United States by looking at similarities and differences among
international students with different cultural backgrounds and determines how stress,
social support, English proficiency, region/country of origin and length of residence
in the United States can affect the process of adaptation to a new culture.

Analysis Of Just Mercy By Bryan Stevenson
When I first read these lines, I was shocked. The gods in Lewis novel represent the
Christian God. Furthermore justice is considered, by Christians, to be a cardinal
virtue. It made no sense that Lewis, a devout Anglican, would imply that God was
not just. I began to wonder: What is justice that could possibly make it a quality
separate from the divine attributes of God? I then realized that justiceis only ever
ethical, when paired with mercy. An eye for an eye, despite being just, is considered
by most everyone to be immoral and cruel. Justice in and of itself is not a virtue, but
rather, when joined with mercy, becomes capable of promoting goodness.
In his memoir Just Mercy, Bryan Stevenson shares his experiences with justice and
mercy or the lack there of; be these experiences his own, or the experiences of
others which he has witnessed. Unfortunately, because of the color of their skin or
their social standing, Stevenson and his clients are often treated with a justice
rendered from mercy. An example of this is when the two police officers accosted
Stevenson. Had they been calm and clearly expressed that there were concerns of
burglary in the area, they could have peacefully come to the conclusion that
Stevenson was no threat. Instead one of the officers immediately drew his gun which
lead to a hostile treatment of Stevenson, a cruel violation of his rights, and, when the
officers rummaged through his files, an unlawful breaking of attorney client privilege.

The film On Being Gay gave me new ways to look at and understand what it means
to be gay. It was filled to the brim with thought provoking discussion and exercises
that allowed it to get its message through loud and clear. These being, the prevalence
of homophobia in our culture and what causes it, learning to perceive the world as if
it were predominantly filled with homosexuals, confronting the stereotypes society
maintains about homosexuals, the differences between being gayor lesbian and
coming from another minority group, and using Alfred Kinsey s theory to look at
sexuality as being on a continuum. From these topics and exercises, I feel that I now
better understand not only the overall topic of homophobia within the context of
American society, and have also learned a bit more about myself as well.
Brian McNaught brought the conversation of homosexuality to a personal level. He
explained how being gay has impacted his life, and how he had to hide who he was
and act like a straight man out due to his own ignorance of his sexuality and fear of
being rejected for being gay. When he did finally come to terms with himself and
begin to reveal himself to others, his fear that he would be rejected due to his
sexuality was confirmed. This is a fear that I share about coming out, and to be
honest, I am not quite sure why. I know my family would accept it without a second
thought, my friends would not care, and my coworkers would not care. I do not
