Almost Lover by A Fine Frenzy Essay
Almost Lover Many songs have deeper meanings then what we truly think. Its important to really
take time out of the day, and sit down to dissect the song to find its true meaning, or maybe even its
multiple different meanings, that have been hidden away. The song Almost Lover, by A Fine
Frenzy, is one of the songs that could have multiple different meanings behind it. The female singer
of A Fine Frenzy, is named Alison Sudol. Alison Sudol is from Seattle, Washington. She was born
December 23, 1984. She sings mainly Indie songs, and also stars in a few movies. In the song
Almost Lover, she is singing about her lover leaving her behind. Its a slow, Indie song that has
sweet, but sad music to it. Many questions arise when it comes to... Show more content on

When she states that he told her he wasn t ever going to forget about what they had been
through, or their memories together. Then throughout the chorus of the song she repeatedly
tells him goodbye. It raises the two big questions, one of which is where did her almost lover
go? Did he simply leave her for someone new? Maybe he passed away, and she is still broken
hearted about it. Its difficult to know for sure, but in part of the song, Alison sings about how
her almost lover used to sing her Spanish lullabies. This could mean a few different things, one
of which could be that he is Spaniard, and has left her to go back home to live with his family
again. Although it could just simply mean that he is just bilingual, but the thought of him being
bilingual raised other questions to me. Such as why is he bilingual if his didn t grow up in a
Spanish house hold? Did he learn the other language for a specific reason? I realized that the
answer to this question was the same answer to the second extremely big question that came to
mind when I realized that he didn t want to leave her either. This other question that came to mind
when dissecting this song was, why did the almost lover have to leave? If he never truly wanted to
leave her. Looking a bit more into the other two facts that were covered earlier. One of which was
that he was bilingual, and the other was that she can t look at the ocean without thinking about him.

The Disaster Of The Hurricane Katrina
The devastating Hurricane Katrina left Louisiana, and the rest of America, distraught. The mighty
category 5 hurricane left thousands of Louisiana residents without food, water and shelter. The
devastation of the storm led the levies of the flood protecting dam to break leaving the city
underwater during the catastrophe. This natural disaster will go down in American history as the
worst of its kind. Although all the unfortunate natural events that made this tragedy possible, the
supervision of the event was almost as bad as the hurricane itself. There are many fingers to
point at the different people handling the situation but one this is clear, it was not handled
properly. The blame all fell on a select few individuals ranging from The President of the United
States of America to the Mayor of New Orleans. Kathleen Blanco, a former schoolteacher and two
term Lt. Governor of Louisiana, elected governor in January 2004 and who was in charge of
Louisiana s response when Hurricane Katrinastruck on Aug. 29, 2005. Ray Nagin, another official
in the hot seat, was the elected mayor of New Orleans in May 2002 and served as mayor during
the disaster. Michael Brown, the former Federal Emergency Management Agency(FEMA) director
from 2003 2005, who was in charge when Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast on Aug. 29,
2005. Last but not least, President George W. Bushwas the active president during the time of

Why Curfew Hourss Are Important For Teens
The ways teens act nowadays are really diverse between the new and old. Curfew hours are really
important for teens and their own safety.Although they are home certain times, this does not
necessarily mean their actions are appropriate. The curfew law restriction shouldn t change at all,
even though people complain. Having the juvenile under control can have mutual
responsibilities. The most critical issue for not following the curfewhours can lead to many
consequences. The time limit can have lots of causes and effects within teens.Curfew times are
good to have to help teens from getting into dangerous situations, the lost of education, and the
mutual amount of safety at the time. Curfew hours have positive and negative standards. Curfews
are meant to help the teens from getting into trouble. For example, your child might have more

By them going out in a school night and coming back at whatever time they want is a big NO.
Having a curfew from the law they have to follow it, they might not follow yours as a parent but
the law can t be messed with. The average time a teen sleeps is eight hours most of them don t
even reach five, all due to going out and coming home late. They ll start skipping school, not
even attend and all their school years will go lower and they ll be behind. The curfew time they
all have has to be followed in order for them to be trusted and not getting fined. National Youth
Rights Association best expresses and confirms that, curfew laws often have exceptions if the
person is coming home from work, or an emergency what else would a youth want to be out at
night for? On the other hand yes, most teens have extracurricular activities, work, etc and they

A Shared Responsibility For Online Privacy
A Shared Responsibility for Online Privacy
There are some things in life people can control and things they cannot. When driving, people can
fasten their seat belt, keep their car s limits, and focus on the area ahead to avoid car accidents.
Whereas when flying, people cannot do many things to protect themselves, but rely on the
government s aviation regulations and airlines enforcement to increase flight safety. Likewise,
when it comes to the online privacy, web users can control the passwords they set, the profile they
create, and the statements they post on the social networks, but they cannot prevent themselves
from being hurt due to technology companies malice and governments weak supervision and loose
regulations. Technology... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It means governments should make clear regulations on the network services in order to make
sure that social networks are built with proper security and privacy. An American journalist
Farhad Manjoo, in his article It s Not All Facebook s Fault, mentions that Facebook failed to
keep user information private; the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) urged Facebook to take
actions to keep the promises about privacy it gave to its American users before. The FTC plays a
role in making certain that services Facebook provides are in compliance with the privacy policy. It
is a role of governments to ensure regulations take effect and is responsible for monitoring the
implementation. More specifically, they may need to examine whether or not the service providers
give users a clear notice regarding privacy and whether or not users express consent affirmatively
before making their personal information available for business purposes. Obviously, governments
have obligations to enforce and tightly supervise service providers to implement the regulations of
security and privacy. Hence, governments should take responsibility to make privacy regulations on
social networks and monitor the enforcement of the regulations.
Moreover, technology companies have a primary responsibility to make users feel safe by creating
online transparency. They should make information

The Culture Of The 1960 s
During our first module of Performance Cultures, we explored and researched into the counter
cultures of the 1960 s; how those movements shaped not only the development of the
performance world but also the culture of modern day life. A prominent factor in the culture of
the 1960 s was the art of protest. We as class researched heavily into the different areas of protest
during that time, as it really was an era in which the people fought back against governments and
elitist institutes. To begin, we looked at the Hippie culture; their shared beliefs and the changes
they were trying to make in the world. Many hippies used music to portray their political and
cultural views. The use of music meant that the messages were available to all, instead of being
restricted to those with the right education on politics. A huge proprietor within the hippie society
was Bob Dylanwho used the music industry to spread their messages through songs such as
Masters of War (1963) and Blowin in the Wind (1963). Protest songs were not only used
throughout the hippie movement, but are a thread that ties together many of the counter cultures in
the 1960 s such as punk, and black rights movements through soul and funk music. I particularly
enjoyed this area of study; being a trained and experienced singer, I very much took advantage of a
situation in which I could learn more about the roots of the music industry that I perform within.
So, when we were asked to create our own protest

Ad Analysis
Ad Analysis It happens once a month. It lasts for five to seven days. It is a time when a female
becomes physically, emotionally, and mentally affected. It has been known to be a women s worse
nightmare. It s the infamous menstrual cycle. The only thing that makes this time manageable is a
good, reliable tampon. The Tampax Pearl ad persuades buyers to purchase their product through
role models, settings, and props. The ad context is directed towards the teenage female population.
A high school football field is the setting for the ad. The main characters portrayed are high school
cheerleaders. They are all dressed in matching uniforms with blue and white tops, white skirts, and
white shoes. They are perceived to be cheering... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I can relate to being a teenage girl. Fearing the worse, that someone will see evidence that my
monthly visitor has arrived. The text in the ad lures in females. When you look at the text you
see some in a soft pastel pink. The ad contains a package of tampons with a heart shape on the
box. The heart gives the feeling of sensitivity and is appealing to female emotions. All women
can relate to the feeling of menstrual cycles. Most women feel sluggish, and bloated with water
weight. With the font being very tall and stick like, it takes away the feeling of bloating and gives
more of a tall and slender feel. The words used in the ad are also very persuasive. When thinking
of a menstrual cycle, the words that come to my mind are dirty, bothersome, and bulky. The ad
clearly changes my mind by using such words as protection, clean, carefree, small and compact.
The brand Tampax has been around for several years. The fact that they have a product they now
call Tampax Pearl is a clever way to advertise, as many consumers relate pearl to the color white
and the color white to cleanliness. In order for Tampax to persuade consumers to buy their product
they effectively used popular teenage role models, genuine settings, props, and context that is
clearly relatable to teenage girls. Good advertising approaches like role models and relatability help
consumers to make tough decisions when picking one brand over another. With this ad

1965 Election Elections
Discussion Due to the large inflow of immigrants into the U.S. as a result of the 1965 Immigration
Act, the U.S. has become a much more diverse country. As a result of increased exposure to foreign
cultural groups, as well as a shift towards more educated and skilled immigrants, Americans have
become more accepting of immigrants and hold much more favorable opinions towards immigrants
than they did before 1965. This change in attitudes towards immigrants was evident in the change
in campaigning techniques from the 1968 presidential campaign to the 2008 and 2012 presidential
campaigns. In 1968, the effects of the 1965 ImmigrationAct were not yet evident, as the new

Schwartz and Troianovski (2015), reporters for The Wall Street Journal, claim that many residents
of the U.S. fear that the terrorist group ISIS will exploit this expansion and use it to smuggle
terrorists into the U.S. Fears have especially heightened after the 2015 San Bernardino shooting.
Although this has not been confirmed to be the workings of a foreign terrorist group (Karimi,
Shoichet, Ford, 2015), American citizens are becoming increasingly in favor of restricting
immigration. In a December 2015 survey conducted by the Associated Press, 53% of respondents
opposed the Obama administration s plan to admit Syrian refugees into the U.S. and 54% believed
that the U.S. takes too many immigrants from the Middle East (Swanson, 2015). While pro
restriction attitudes may cause the number of people immigrating to the U.S. each year outside of
the refugee system to decrease, the increasing number of Syrian refugees entering the U.S. in 2016
and 2017 will offset this. The number of immigrants voting in future elections will increase as a
result of the refugee crisis, so in the future, presidential candidates should increase the amount of
appeals and advertisements used in order to encourage Syrian refugees and other immigrants to

Room 127 Quotes
The best thing to give someone is a chance. If someone makes a mistake then you should forgive
him or her and start over, and over and over. In Things Change forgiveness is all Johanna knows.
No matter the mistake she always gives Paul another chance, even when it becomes difficult,
harmful and deadly. I can describe the importance of room 127, a memory, the firebird as a safe
and deadly place, and chocolate chip ice cream as an apology. Room 127 is a room full of
despair for Paul. In that room is where he goes to be alone, to think, to be like his father. Room
127 holds nothing more than memories of a pathetic man and a computer, which Paul uses to
talk to him. The computer holds many letters that say everything about Paul s life, everything
his father never got to hear from him or experience because of his death. Paul uses the computer
and those words for a sense of closure, telling his dad what he though of him and all of the
mistakes he made, while he drinks his sorrows away just like his father. Leaving Paul was one of
the worst things his father could have done, following the note that he left: Dear Paul I am
leaving, please tell your mother. Everything is going to be okay. Trust me, Dad (Jones 162). Now
all he has left to remember his father is his not so okay life, room 127 and his car, the firebird....

The firebird, once property for Paul s father, is now a free flying escape machine from all of the
problems for the real world. Not only is the car an escape for Paul but it is also a place for him and
Johanna to be together. When the relationship is sweet this was a safe place, but when Paul was
mad the tables turned. When inside the car there is no place to escape: He reached out to wipe
the tears from my eyes, but I turned away, crunching myself into a little ball in the corner, the
safest shelter I could find (Jones 129). One persons safe place is another persons

Morley Callaghan Symbols
Books are the foundation of diverse characters and themes, though are often overlooked; a reader
finds intrigue by the story rather than the meaning written between the lines of the written text. The
author works feverishly to bring these ideas forward through the variety of literary devices,
however the hard work put into the noveldoes not necessarily achieve recognition. The Loved and
the Lost by Morley Callaghan contains effective use of literary devices to develop the characters
morals, and their position in society concerning social status and societal isolation. The techniques
that author skillfully uses include flashback, dialogue and symbolism. Flashback works to
characterize and shape each character, while dialogue creates interactions... Show more content on

Callaghan excels in using symbolism with his knowledge on both society and the understanding
of what the images represent. Symbols work to break down a character and present their
opinions on society to gain a better understanding of what the individual believes in. Peggy
Sanderson is an advocate for change in the treatment of black culture and is constantly showing
her respect for the group that others oppress. A symbol that best describes Peggy s opinion is the
river, which flows around the city of Montreal. It was those who wanted a change who preferred
the broad flowing river (Callaghan 1), perfectly describing Peggy through the use of symbolism
in nature. Peggy wants to see change in the world and her strive for change is like a river that is
constantly flowing. Water in a river never stops and fresh water replaces it as it flows. Peggy
never stops respecting the African American culture and will always speak her mind on the
subject, despite what others believe. Similar to the river, the mountain is also an important piece
of symbolism in the text. Symbolism creates a representation of the societal mindset and the ways
by which a society works. Segregation in the text is more than common and the isolation between
groups is prominent. In Callaghan s work, the white culture is racist and oppresses the black
culture, remaining stuck in their oppressive ways. The belief that their ways should not change
describes Catherine Carver, a young woman who has a divorce and engages in a romantic
relationship with McAlpine. Catherine is the daughter of Mr. Carver, an aristocrat who is very set
in his ways and does not believe in change, which he passes down to his daughter. In contrast to the
river, the mountain represents Catherine and the overall white culture at the time. A mountain is
firm and never moves nor does it change, which is why those who wanted

The Effects Of Pathological Anxiety
With as many problems as there are today, including the stresses from family, jobs, school or
socially, psychological disorders are very common. The stress of life, at one time or another,
causes people to sometimes have a horrible feeling of anxiety. Anxiety disorder is an alarm signal,
heralding an imminent danger, allowing people to use all necessary measures to cope with the
threat (Yduoctinhhoa). People who have pathological anxietyusually experience excessive or
disproportionate symptoms to the persistent threat. This affects their activities, and is possibly
accompanied by thoughts or actions which seem excessive, repeated or prolonged, which influences
their adaptation to life. The pressures of work, health, the family, the living

factor when choosing which cases to review every year. And, I believe if we want to reduce the
amounts of federal caseloads we need to adapt to a similar approach like the one specialized
federal courts use when deciding which cases to hear. According to Neubauer Meinhold (1991),
These courts are called specialized federal court because they are authorized to hear only a limited

False Statistical Data Analysis
Statistics are an important part of every day life and can be used throughout many different
activities. Many statistics, however, are altered and can be deceptive at first glance. One
example of this includes the claim that women make less money than men. When analyzing
statistics of a set of data, one must take into account sample size and other parameters. In this
particular example, it may be true that the mean of women s income is large in a sample of ten
participants. However, the mean of men s income may be smaller because a larger sample was
taken. Many companies use false statistical data to advertise their product. This claim may be
substantiated for a small sample, but not for a whole population. In addition, statistics provide
credibility for your evidence or argument. The audience of this article is any person who watches
television, reads magazines, or views any form of media.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This interests me because it shows how companies use deception to sell a product. Furthermore, I
was captivated by the concept of not blinding accepting findings, but instead thinking about the
processes, sources, and numbers that prove the concept. This type of thinking is critical in
solving problems and generating innovative solutions. In the future, I will use this method of
asking questions and using evidence to back up my claims. I found it most difficult to understand
the idea of how diverse the usage of statistics in an average day. The idea that probability and
other statistical concepts exist in our world through real life examples fascinates me. This created
unrest in me because it is easy to fall into the trap of simply believing what one sees at first glance.
This way of thinking could create problematic

Straight Commission Case Study

Benefit:
1. Opportunities higher overall. Straight commission opportunities almost always pay a higher

taking that first, I was scared at first thought the decision not to have a stable wage income

commission rate is so high, only the sales will pay how much I pay each month to the hair, and
that only one sale a month and not spend a lot of specific work. Finally, I quadrupled my income
just by switching the commission, although I did not sell more than I received.

Neutral Tones By Thomas Hardy Essay
How does Hardy use poetic techniques to detail changes in his relationship with his wife over time
in Neutral Tones ?
Thomas Hardy uses the variety of techniques in writing the poem, telling about how desperate his
love life being when a woman whom he loves, died. As the first stanza starts, Hardy straight away
set his time and location in the poetry into past memories. We stood by a pond that winter day

The Themes Of Fate And Fate In Oedipus The King
Destiny and fate both play a similar role in this play. These are two crucial themes that are central
to the play; they have a devastating impact on the story line and unleash terror on the characters.
Fate is one of the opposition elements of the play that is influenced by one s own action but
ultimately is dictated by events beyond anybody s control. By elevating the importance of fate,
Sophoclessuggests that characters cannot be fully responsible for their actions, but instead, they are
unaware that their destinyis controlled by a supreme power. These two main themes cause tragedy
and despair to many characters, however, the most affected one is King Oedipus.

His destiny decided by the God s is particularly cruel and pitiless since the oracle of Delphi
decided that his fate was to kill his father and marry his mother. An ancient Greek audience
would accept the wisdom of the gods. However, Sophocles skill as a playwright is to challenge
the ancient Greek received wisdom: even though Oedipus ought to accept his destiny because of
some heinous sin committed by his forefathers, he inspires sympathy in the audience by using
dramatic irony. Oedipus dire warning as he imposes on himself the penalty of exile: severe
sentence // will be exile shows the reader that Oedipus is ignorant of the fact that he is the guilty
one and that therefore he is inadvertently condemning his own future and his own life. Also, the
quotation I curse him is another example of dramatic irony since the King is unaware that he is
cursing himself and consequently, putting at risk and at danger his own future. This again shows
the strength of the God s who are able to arrange and decide people s destiny. Later on the play, the
audience discover him as being blind since he does not manage to see the truth about himself.
Therefore, this makes him exposed and vulnerable to his unknown and unwanted devastating
destiny. Sophocles uses the quote: For blind of seeing to show that Oedipus frequently

The First Thanksgiving Essay example
The First Thanksgiving On September 6, 1620, 102 men, women and children from England
boarded a small cargo boat called the Mayflower and set sail for the New World. The passengers
left their homes in England in search of religious freedom from the King of England. Today they
are known as pilgrims. After braving two months at sea, crossing the stormy Atlantic Ocean, the
Pilgrims finally landed off the coast of the New World. In the freezing December waters, they
anchored the Mayflower and sent a landing party to what is now Plymouth Harbor beach. To
secure the small landing boat against the rain and winds, they tied it to a large rock Plymouth Rock

When April arrived, the crew of the Mayflower raised its sails and set off for England, offering
to take any Pilgrim who wished to return to England. Faced with the choice of the harsh New
World, or the religious intolerance of the King, they all stayed. One day, a lone Indian man
walked into the settlement. He raised his hand in friendship to the settlers. The Pilgrims
welcomed this stranger named Samoset. Samoset introduced the Pilgrims to his chief, Massasoit,
and his interpreter, Squanto. Squanto spoke English because he had been captured as a boy by
traders who had come to the New World in search of slaves. Squanto was taken to England and
lived there many years before returning to the New World. He alone understood that the Pilgrims
did not know how to hunt or fish that they would die without help in the New World. Squanto and
Chief Massasoit extended their friendship to the Pilgrims. They showed them how to catch fish
with nets and how to grow corn, pumpkins, potatoes and squash foods from the New World. The
Indians showed the Pilgrims where to hunt turkey and deer, and where to gather nuts and berries.
They explained to the Pilgrims that the land was master of those who walked and lived there. The
harvest of 1621 saw the fulfillment of their labors. The Pilgrims had grown barley, corn, pumpkins,

Narrative Voice In The Awakening
In The Awakening, author Kate Chopin uses a narrative voice that shifts between the third person
limited, recounting Edna Pontellier s innermost thoughts and feelings and the third person
omniscient, that examines the perception of her by the people closest to her while she is absent,
to recount the tale of Edna Pontellier. Using these two alternating narrative voices allows for the
absence of Edna in certain scenes, this allows for the reader to experience her through the eyes of
the people around her, and ultimately gain a deeper, more comprehensive, understanding of the
inner and outer forces that shaped her perception of life and marriage.
The first example of this occurs early in the novel in a scene where Adele Ratignolle, one of
Edna s closest friends, requests of Robert Lebrun a favor, while the two of them walk alone she
says, I only ask for one [favor]; let Mrs. Pontellier alone. Adele sees Edna as somewhat meek and
susceptible to Roberts advances. Robert s flirting with married women is a recurring theme at

Communities On The Internet That Anyone Can Join Nowadays...
There are many communities on the Internet that anyone can join nowadays. No matter what
someone s interest is, more than likely there is some community on the Internet for them to join,
especially if it is on social media. One thing that most teenagers do is go to a university, and
sometimes going away from your parents and starting an independent life can be quite scary. There
is a community online called The StudentRoom, which is for anyone that is applying to universities,
just moving to a college, or is already attending. Even though there are plenty of communities that
are like The Student Room, each community has its own characteristics that make it unique to itself.
Whether that is the type of people that are in the community to the type of tools that are used to
accomplish their goals, each community is similar to others but different in ways that make them
successful.
In order to identify what makes a community different, one must analyze the activity system and
from there on figure out what makes it unique. Kain and Wardle state that an activity system is a
group of people who share a common object and motive over time, as well as the broad range of
tools they use together to act on that object and realize that motive (275). This definition of an
activity system fits the community The Student Room because at the end of the day all the students
that are a member of the community just want to graduate from college with ease and still have
fun. They use a broad

The Socio-Cultural Analysis Of India
The Socio Cultural Analysis of India Culture is defined as The arts, beliefs, customs,
institutions, and other products of human work and thought considered as a unit, especially
with regard to a particular time or social group by American Heritage Dictionary of the English
Language (2011). Also, the Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms (2005) defines culture
as A feature of the terrain that has been constructed by man. Included are such items as roads,
buildings, and canals; boundary lines; and, in a broad sense, all names and legends on a map .
In a nutshell, culture is everything that makes up the basic ways of life. Culture is comprised of
five basic characteristics. Culture is learned, shared, symbolic, integrated, and dynamic (Bueno,
2012). This means that aspects of culture are spread by social interactions such as trade, language
and other communication technologies. Some of the more common forms of communication
technologies and language are movies, television shows, literature, arts, and local history.
Symbolism is similar to the learned and shared aspects in many ways. Language, literature, and
the arts are all major ways in which the symbolism of a specific culture is spread. The integration
of culture is based on pattern. The specific dimensions of social life create social norms that are
followed. The economy and politics are two of the more prevalent forms of social life that lead to
the patterns of integration. Lastly, there is a

These pedophile advocacy groups deny their acts to be defined as sickness. Instead, they claim
that their actions are caused because of the inherent nature of human which is nonsense because
there is not any logical thought that supports their action. Sadly, these organizations play an
important role to make child sex tourism organized because they promote pedophiles behavior
and find child sex tourism places for these abusers. Matar argues that few NGOs such as Fight

children predators. Hall argues that %25 of the arrested pedophiles are Americans, %16 of them

for these NGOs to maintain anti pedophile activism worldwide. As these NGOs acknowledge

The Problem Of Gangs And Violence
The problem of gangs and violence are commonly found in Chicago, especially during the night
time. Although the rate seems to be lower compared to the past, the violence rate is still shocking
compared to other states. Therefore, violence in Chicago s neighborhoods and communities cannot
be overlooked. Statistics show that 1,109 school aged youth were shot, and 216 of those were
killed in 2010. As a student of UIC, I often receive crimealert emails as violencecases seemed to
occur quite often around the campus area. In order to improve the public security to ensure
residents safety, it is essential to find ways to solve these issues. It is because violence can cause
negative effects in many different aspects. Besides individual s physical well being, it may also
lead to some long term psychological problems; such as anxiety, eating and sleeping problem.
Moreover, violence also affects the communityas it became unsafe to live in. The value of the
properties will decrease because the quality of life became worse.
These days, Chicago launched a cure violence program to help prevent the violence, and this
program is managed by the Chicago Project. The social problem this community intervention is
trying to remedy is to lower down the cases of shooting and killings on the streets. As it could be
challenging to change the individuals behaviors within a short period of time, this program focuses

todays organizations. Three experts in the field outline a powerful measurement system that
highlights the indisputable role HR can play as both a prime source of sustainable competitive

This presents an interesting dilemma: The asset which is most important is the least understood,
least prone to measurement, and, hence least susceptible to management. He goes on to commend
the co authors of The HR Scorecard for three specific contributions: their development of causal
models which illustrate the relationship of HR value drivers with business outcomes and thereby
take the Balanced Scorecard to the next level of sophistication; their research on the drivers of
highperformance organizations to provide a framework to decision makers with which to formulate
and implement strategies for human capital growth; and finally, their insights into the competencies
required by HR professionals, competencies which can enabler an organization to deliver on the
promise of its measurement system. In essence, the co authors of The HR Scorecard identify and
explain linkages indeed the interdependence between and among people, strategy, and performance.
Only by understanding these linkages and their independence can decision makers in any
organization (regardless of size or nature) accurately measure the nature, value, and impact of
human capital on the bottom line. Moreover, decision makers can then make much more accurate

importance when it comes to the settling in of immigrants in a new community. The Puerto Ricans
indeed faced many issues when they got to NYC. The existing communities made it difficult for
them to settle in well. There was too much hatred and violence between the two cultures in that

Although they were not able to achieve their dreams because Tony ended up being killed, the two
cultures were able to discard their hatred for each other and come together for the first time. Indeed,
the smooth settling of immigrants greatly depends on the cultural interactions in their new

British Airways Case Summary
Assignment Questions:
1.Evaluate TMS s system of measuring, evaluating, and rewarding the performances of the regional
general managers. Be sure to identify the key issues related to managerial authority and financial
responsibility.
TMS s system of measuring, evaluating, and rewarding the performances of the regional general
managers was, as they called it, tiered . They started the rewards at the top, the general managers,
and allowed them to allocate the rewards throughout their salesmen based on sales, and when the
sales occurred. With TMS being the largest seller of import cars and trucks in the United States
(with sales over one million), they were evaluated based on the number of promotional vehicles

They should start the change in some of their more profitable divisions of the company. They have
proved that they are profitable so they have the human resources, marketing and finance divisions in
line. They would need to have someone in to teach them about the port of entry division to make
them a solid solo division that is completely decentralized from TMC. From there they would need
to monitor the division to see where any possible issues may occur and iron them out. From there
they could begin implementing them in other more profitable divisions and slowly turn them all
into independent operations.
I suggested starting with the most profitable divisions first due to the fact that they are financially
stable and would be able to handle any issues that may arise during this transition. They would be
the most resilient to change and would be a good model for all the other division to see what is to
come and what changes to expect.
Case Analysis:
Key Issues:
Change was the main issue of this case. TMS was expected to change from a centralized company
to a decentralized company. They wanted their GM s to be more responsible for what was
happening in their divisions, not only their successes, but their failures to. The GM s were to take
over the finance, human resources, marketing, and port of entry operations. TMC felt that this
would make them look at long term goals,

Hybrid Vs. Electric Cars
Hybrid vs. Electric
When hearing the words gas, hybrid and electric, people automatically think of automobiles.. [this
is a very clunky opening rewrite it I think people do know those are the three main types of cars...]
People buy hybrid or electric cars because they either want to save money on gas or they want to
be able to help the environment with their vehicles. One of the most popular hybrid vehicles in
the United States is the Toyota Prius, which, compared to a normal gas powered car, has great
mileage and reduced fuel emissions. The popularity of the Tesla Model S a fully electrically
powered car has recently skyrocketed due to the increase in gas prices. Hybrid technology
powered cars, such as the Toyota Prius, are better for the environment than fully electric powered
vehicles, such as Tesla s Model S, because of the emissions created by the electricity that powers
the vehicle.
The gas powered vehicle has been a problem for the environment since the day it was created.
These vehicles emit greenhouse gasses that are detrimental towards the environment. Nearly one
fifth of the United States total fuel emissions come from gas powered cars. In 2012 transportation
contributed with 28% of total greenhouse emissions in the United States. One of the greenhouse
gasses that cars emit is Carbon Dioxide. What greenhouse gases including Carbon Dioxide do is
trap heat in the Earth s atmosphere leading to the atmospheric temperature rising. Global warming

Drosophilid Flies Research Paper
Environmental conditions are sometimes appropriate for the evolution of numerous species from a
common ancestor. Evolutionary, or adaptive, radiations happen when a large number of species
descend from one lineage. This phenomenon usually occurs when a population of one species
colonizes an area with many available ecological niches and when the rate of speciation is greater
than the rate of extinction in a given area. Adaptive radiations have historically taken place after
mass extinctions and on newly formed island archipelagos, because these incidences create
conditions where new speciescan fill open ecological niches. Unlike the mainland, ecological niches
are available on new island systems. These island species adapt to new environments... Show more

For example, the silverswords are a diverse group of plants that occur in Hawaii. They occur in
many forms, such as herbs, vines and trees, and in many habitats, such as at sea level to
mountainous. However, their closest mainland relative is a small herb that occurs in the Pacific
Northwest. It lacks the diversity that the Hawaiian silverswords have. Hawaiian drosophilid
flies also provide an excellent example of adaptive radiation. There are around 800 species of
drosophilid flies in Hawaii, and it is thought that they descended from one species of fly that
colonized a Hawaiian island. In fact, it is possible that they speciated from a single fertilized
female who was transported to Hawaii millions of years ago. Subsequently, subsets of the original
drosophilid fly population were transported to other islands and speciated there as well. Scientists
believe that the Hawaiian drosophilid speciation is still occurring. For instance, different
populations of one species of fly that occur in forest habitat patches have different numbers of hairs
on their forelegs, and these hairs are used in mating rituals. If these differences cause the fly
populations to not interbreed they may lead to further

With regard to the relationship between government spending and private consumption, two
opponent points of view can be found. The first one states that there is a relation of substitution
between government spending and private consumption. However, the other one concludes that
government spending and private consumption are complements. Therefore, it can be easily seen
that it is a controversial issue for both economists and policy makers. According to the literature,
several studies have been done to test the relationship between government spending and private
consumption in the context of industrialized countries, OECD countries, and some Asian countries.
Of course, Egypt was not one of these studied cases. Moreover, when a study was done to
investigate this point of research in the context of a group of African countries (Anoruo 2005) that
performed a panel data analysis for 24 countries; Unfortunately, Egypt was not included in this panel
data analysis. As a result, there is a gap in the literature of testing the relationship between
government spending and private consumption for Egypt. Consequently, this study aims to provide
an answer to this important question; does government spending substitute or complement private
consumption in Egypt? Literature Review: Surveying the literature of testing the relationship

The Key Aspects Of The Relationship Between Poverty And...
This policy report will identify and discuss the evidence towards the key aspects of the
relationship between abuse and neglect and the greater economic hardship which will have an
impact on poverty and how this affects the chance of a child being abused or neglected. Looking
at the evidence it is clear to see that there is a strong link associated between poverty and a child
suffering from abuse and neglect.
Introduction and context
According to NSPCC there are more than 50,000 children in the UK are abused and neglected
annually, this estimates that there are 8 children suffering abuse for every one child that is
identified. This is a strong link between socio economic circumstances of families and the chances
of the child experiencing abuse and neglect. This association extends across all developed countries,
different types of abuse and culture variation depending on the culture however definitions and
research methods deem equal to both poverty and child protection systems.
The families socio economic circumstances affect the relationship across the whole of society and
not just a simple divide of poverty. This then has a poor outcome in relation to the child s
inequalities to health and education and provides a link between the likelihood of abuse and neglect
with the greater economic hardship.
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines child abuseas all forms of physical and/or emotional
ill treatment, sexual abuse, neglect or negligent treatment or commercial

The Value Of Discipline And The Desire Of Wisdom
Chapter eight expands the concepts in chapter one and introduces the value of discipline and the
desire of wisdom. This is the second of Solomon s three poems. In these verses, wisdom is again
personified as a woman and makes her proclamation, heard from far and wide, and does not wait
for the audience to come to her. She represents herself as two nouns: Doth not wisdomcry? And
understanding put forth her voice? (8:1). Understanding is another word for wisdom. For knowledge
and understanding go hand in hand . The next few verses set up the setting in which wisdom
makes her speech: She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors.
Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man (8:2 3). Waltke s commentary
elaborates on the position of her speech and explains that she speaks on the highest points, to be
visible and audible as possible . Wisdom stands by the way in the places of the path , in which
connotes where the masses walk on their way to choosing their lifestyle. This represents the
point at where they must decide to follow either wisdom or foolishness. Her location at the gates
implies that she is around a place where a lot of people gather on a daily basis, persuading them
to stay away from the wicked. Wisdom stands at the opening of the gates and Waltke expands on
the idea that here decisions are made and people enter into new situations and even embark on new
journeys. She proceeds to give insight and

Neck Elongating Culture
From the beginning of time, woman have done many things to change or modify their bodies. From
getting a simple henna tattoo, to getting a major plastic surgery, woman have gone about many
ways to change themselves. Neck elongating is one of the many ways that people adjust there
bodies. Although some of these practices are very minor and the effects on them are reversible,
neck elongating is not. The practice of neck elongating in Asia has a negative impact on the
community because it leads to permanent damage, results in starting at a young age, and causes the

Summary Of The Land Use Act In Nigeria
In, The Land Use Act, 1978 author J.K Agbosu considers the role of the act in the context of class
relations in Nigeria. Namely, Agbosu (1988) argues that The Land Use Act, 1978, is a product of
the inherent contradictions of the colonial and neo colonial dependent, pseudo capitalist. economic
structures established in Nigeria since colonial times (1). Agbosu furthers this argument by
proposing that the reason that the act, is in part contradictory to the norms of everyday Nigerians
is the failure of legislators to look beyond their own classed perspectives and consider, [a] solution
that not only abolished private ownershiprights in land but also abolished private ownership of
other means of production (1). Indeed, Agbosu takes a decidedly Marxist perspective in his
analysis of the law. However, the crux of the argument, which is that the post Colonial state offers
its citizens no new possibilities in its application of citizenship rights, is valuable to the discussion
of democracyin Africa. In his article, J.K Agbosu notes that the Land Use Act is in tension with
traditional conceptions of land within Nigeria. In the pre colonial era, in most societies, land was
viewed as communal property rather than a commodity; in other words, land was based around
kinship ties. The purpose of the Land Use Act is to divest communities, and their respective leaders,
of their shared role in the ownership of land and place it in the trust of the State. This shift in
authority is not inherently unjust, but as Agbosu notes the movement from communal to State
ownership does not act the groundwork for an equitable distribution of the land. Rather, the act
seeks to impose a Western capitalist ideology of land ownership upon indigenous peoples. This is
evidenced in the displacement of poor Lagosians in the 1990 destruction of the Maroko slum. The
state government used the Land Use Act to legitimize their claim to the communal land, thus,
forcibly moving thousands of low income migrants. The expropriated land was then given to a
prominent and wealthy royal family; an action that would seem to contradict the alleged purpose of
the act, which was to benefit all Nigerians (Ehirim Capitalism Central ). Moreover, while

The Design Summit will walk you through the Human Centred Design process in stages. The first
few days are your chances to discover how the process works, learn about the development context
and generally build the foundations of your knowledge base. We will then define a design
challenge, and travel to the communities to begin the Empathise phase.
In Empathise, you will spend some time in a local community learning about their life, jobs,
values, skills and challenges. This is your biggest research opportunity so be sure to make the
most of it. Here you will begin the Ideate phase, sharing ideas and brainstorming to design new
products, services or processes to support your community. On the final day we will leave the
community and travel to location where you can obtain the materials required to begin prototyping.
This process is not linear. You will reiterate many times through Empathise, Ideate and Prototype
stages whilst in the communities, and again once we move on. Each time your design will
improve and you will learn some useful lessons about HCD along the way. You are expected to
fail. In fact, the more you fail, the better your final product will

The governments point of view is just to fund and make the NHS sucure for the people of the UK.
Another way to communicate to the national health care is through the staff striking. This is a
means of communication by showing there needs to be a change for the staff at the hospital. The
NHS also has face to face talks with their patients during their vist or stay at the hospitals. This
shows that the staff also want to be looked after by the government via payment.
The main stakeholder for Nike is the general public as they purchase the goods Nike produce and
the public is the main source of revenue for that organization, the genral public also somehow
sponser Nike by wearing their clothing brand , which is a need to get product. Another
stakeholder for the organization are companies such as sports direct, as they purchase Nikes
goods as they re competitors to other companies such as JD. Nike sells it s good internationally
which means different countries will purchase their goods. Sport teams are also influenced in
Nike as they sponsors Nikes brand, as Nike pay them to advertise their logo in varies ways. The
local community would also be seen as a stakeholder depending on the response to Nike, positive
or negative. The government is also affected due to business tax. The more stores Nike open the

Differences In A Long Distance Relationship And The Military
Relationships are all about love, happiness, and support. It is also a way of taking the time to
know your significant other in ways that are personal and different than any other type of
relationship that you can have. Being in a military relationship is different than other
relationships, the struggles and not to mention the distance that is faced while being in one.
Waiting for calls, having a time difference and wanting to be held during any bad times can get
frustrating and difficult at times, but just knowing that one day you ll stay and grow old
together can be the strength that can pull you through your weaknesses. Those who are within a
long distance relationship are familiar with about the hardships that are faced. Though the only
difference between being in a long distance relationship and a military long distance relationship
are the struggles of being in one where you don t know when the next time you ll be able to see
your other or even their be time to contact, even just if you ll be able to speak to them. There are
struggles here and there. Some things are taken the wrong way if you re texting them, like there
are instances where I am just asking him a simple question because I m curious and he thinks I m
mad. I d say that the biggest struggle is finding a time when he isn t busy and I m not busy to just
sit down and focus on each other. There is a two hour time difference, so it makes it tough at times,

Opera Buffa Satire
Opera, as with any theatrical production is often indicative of some societal norm or expectation.
However, Opera Buffa, as with any satire generally reaches into the outcasts of society to find
humor in the contrasts with the norms . Interestingly, these comedic teachings often turn into the
norms of tomorrow. These can go from political beliefs, drugs, clothing, hairstyles, relationships,
anything that is different than expected. To help better explain this let us look at a modern
example. I Love Lucy is a television show that showed humor with a whacky wife expanding her
horizons as she wandered into a world mainly for men. It is true that women had been given the
right to vote decades before but is wasn t until the need for more female worker during World War
II that women began to find their way out of the home. It was the exploring of these boundaries that
made part of the comedy.
We also find these explorations in Le Nozze di Figaro, a comedy that visited that day and reached
for the next. It was written in a time when serfdom and the aristocracy were becoming obsolete. In
fact, shortly after the writing of the production the Holy Roman Empire was no more. The age of
revolution was beginning as the United States found its way out of aristocracy. England and France
slowly began ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, some people credit Le Nozze di Figaro for starting the Revolution. While I do not believe
that Le Nozze di Figaro started the Revolution of the time, I do believe that Mozart emulated the
world and society around him to write his Opera Buffas, specifically Le Nozze di Figaro.
The play in which Mozart based his Opera on was called Le Marriage de Figaro written in 1778
by Pierre Beaumarchais. The play was considered so racy and against the politics of the times that
it was banned from the Viennese stage by King Louis XVI. Mozart evidently studies Paisiello s
handling of the same personalities and included deliberate references to it. (Sadie 2000,

  • 3. Almost Lover by A Fine Frenzy Essay Almost Lover Many songs have deeper meanings then what we truly think. Its important to really take time out of the day, and sit down to dissect the song to find its true meaning, or maybe even its multiple different meanings, that have been hidden away. The song Almost Lover, by A Fine Frenzy, is one of the songs that could have multiple different meanings behind it. The female singer of A Fine Frenzy, is named Alison Sudol. Alison Sudol is from Seattle, Washington. She was born December 23, 1984. She sings mainly Indie songs, and also stars in a few movies. In the song Almost Lover, she is singing about her lover leaving her behind. Its a slow, Indie song that has sweet, but sad music to it. Many questions arise when it comes to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When she states that he told her he wasn t ever going to forget about what they had been through, or their memories together. Then throughout the chorus of the song she repeatedly tells him goodbye. It raises the two big questions, one of which is where did her almost lover go? Did he simply leave her for someone new? Maybe he passed away, and she is still broken hearted about it. Its difficult to know for sure, but in part of the song, Alison sings about how her almost lover used to sing her Spanish lullabies. This could mean a few different things, one of which could be that he is Spaniard, and has left her to go back home to live with his family again. Although it could just simply mean that he is just bilingual, but the thought of him being bilingual raised other questions to me. Such as why is he bilingual if his didn t grow up in a Spanish house hold? Did he learn the other language for a specific reason? I realized that the answer to this question was the same answer to the second extremely big question that came to mind when I realized that he didn t want to leave her either. This other question that came to mind when dissecting this song was, why did the almost lover have to leave? If he never truly wanted to leave her. Looking a bit more into the other two facts that were covered earlier. One of which was that he was bilingual, and the other was that she can t look at the ocean without thinking about him. • 4. The Disaster Of The Hurricane Katrina The devastating Hurricane Katrina left Louisiana, and the rest of America, distraught. The mighty category 5 hurricane left thousands of Louisiana residents without food, water and shelter. The devastation of the storm led the levies of the flood protecting dam to break leaving the city underwater during the catastrophe. This natural disaster will go down in American history as the worst of its kind. Although all the unfortunate natural events that made this tragedy possible, the supervision of the event was almost as bad as the hurricane itself. There are many fingers to point at the different people handling the situation but one this is clear, it was not handled properly. The blame all fell on a select few individuals ranging from The President of the United States of America to the Mayor of New Orleans. Kathleen Blanco, a former schoolteacher and two term Lt. Governor of Louisiana, elected governor in January 2004 and who was in charge of Louisiana s response when Hurricane Katrinastruck on Aug. 29, 2005. Ray Nagin, another official in the hot seat, was the elected mayor of New Orleans in May 2002 and served as mayor during the disaster. Michael Brown, the former Federal Emergency Management Agency(FEMA) director from 2003 2005, who was in charge when Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast on Aug. 29, 2005. When driving, people can fasten their seat belt, keep their car s limits, and focus on the area ahead to avoid car accidents. Whereas when flying, people cannot do many things to protect themselves, but rely on the government s aviation regulations and airlines enforcement to increase flight safety. Likewise, when it comes to the online privacy, web users can control the passwords they set, the profile they create, and the statements they post on the social networks, but they cannot prevent themselves from being hurt due to technology companies malice and governments weak supervision and loose regulations. Technology... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It means governments should make clear regulations on the network services in order to make sure that social networks are built with proper security and privacy. An American journalist Farhad Manjoo, in his article It s Not All Facebook s Fault, mentions that Facebook failed to keep user information private; the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) urged Facebook to take actions to keep the promises about privacy it gave to its American users before. The FTC plays a role in making certain that services Facebook provides are in compliance with the privacy policy. It is a role of governments to ensure regulations take effect and is responsible for monitoring the implementation. More specifically, they may need to examine whether or not the service providers give users a clear notice regarding privacy and whether or not users express consent affirmatively before making their personal information available for business purposes. Obviously, governments have obligations to enforce and tightly supervise service providers to implement the regulations of security and privacy. Hence, governments should take responsibility to make privacy regulations on social networks and monitor the enforcement of the regulations. Moreover, technology companies have a primary responsibility to make users feel safe by creating online transparency. They should make information ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Culture Of The 1960 s During our first module of Performance Cultures, we explored and researched into the counter cultures of the 1960 s; how those movements shaped not only the development of the performance world but also the culture of modern day life. A prominent factor in the culture of the 1960 s was the art of protest. We as class researched heavily into the different areas of protest during that time, as it really was an era in which the people fought back against governments and elitist institutes. To begin, we looked at the Hippie culture; their shared beliefs and the changes they were trying to make in the world. Many hippies used music to portray their political and cultural views. The use of music meant that the messages were available to all, instead of being restricted to those with the right education on politics. A huge proprietor within the hippie society was Bob Dylanwho used the music industry to spread their messages through songs such as Masters of War (1963) and Blowin in the Wind (1963). Protest songs were not only used throughout the hippie movement, but are a thread that ties together many of the counter cultures in the 1960 s such as punk, and black rights movements through soul and funk music. I particularly enjoyed this area of study; being a trained and experienced singer, I very much took advantage of a situation in which I could learn more about the roots of the music industry that I perform within. So, when we were asked to create our own protest ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It has been known to be a women s worse nightmare. It s the infamous menstrual cycle. The only thing that makes this time manageable is a good, reliable tampon. The Tampax Pearl ad persuades buyers to purchase their product through role models, settings, and props. The ad context is directed towards the teenage female population. A high school football field is the setting for the ad. The main characters portrayed are high school cheerleaders. I can relate to being a teenage girl. Fearing the worse, that someone will see evidence that my monthly visitor has arrived. The text in the ad lures in females. When you look at the text you see some in a soft pastel pink. The ad contains a package of tampons with a heart shape on the box. The heart gives the feeling of sensitivity and is appealing to female emotions. All women can relate to the feeling of menstrual cycles. Most women feel sluggish, and bloated with water weight. With the font being very tall and stick like, it takes away the feeling of bloating and gives more of a tall and slender feel. The words used in the ad are also very persuasive. When thinking of a menstrual cycle, the words that come to my mind are dirty, bothersome, and bulky. The ad clearly changes my mind by using such words as protection, clean, carefree, small and compact. The brand Tampax has been around for several years. The fact that they have a product they now call Tampax Pearl is a clever way to advertise, as many consumers relate pearl to the color white and the color white to cleanliness. In order for Tampax to persuade consumers to buy their product they effectively used popular teenage role models, genuine settings, props, and context that is clearly relatable to teenage girls. Good advertising approaches like role models and relatability help consumers to make tough decisions when picking one brand over another. With this ad ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. 1965 Election Elections Discussion Due to the large inflow of immigrants into the U.S. as a result of the 1965 Immigration Act, the U.S. has become a much more diverse country. As a result of increased exposure to foreign cultural groups, as well as a shift towards more educated and skilled immigrants, Americans have become more accepting of immigrants and hold much more favorable opinions towards immigrants than they did before 1965. This change in attitudes towards immigrants was evident in the change in campaigning techniques from the 1968 presidential campaign to the 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns. In 1968, the effects of the 1965 ImmigrationAct were not yet evident, as the new residents of the U.S. that had immigrated to the U.S. immediately after the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Schwartz and Troianovski (2015), reporters for The Wall Street Journal, claim that many residents of the U.S. fear that the terrorist group ISIS will exploit this expansion and use it to smuggle terrorists into the U.S. Fears have especially heightened after the 2015 San Bernardino shooting. Although this has not been confirmed to be the workings of a foreign terrorist group (Karimi, Shoichet, Ford, 2015), American citizens are becoming increasingly in favor of restricting immigration. In a December 2015 survey conducted by the Associated Press, 53% of respondents opposed the Obama administration s plan to admit Syrian refugees into the U.S. and 54% believed that the U.S. takes too many immigrants from the Middle East (Swanson, 2015). While pro restriction attitudes may cause the number of people immigrating to the U.S. each year outside of the refugee system to decrease, the increasing number of Syrian refugees entering the U.S. in 2016 and 2017 will offset this. The number of immigrants voting in future elections will increase as a result of the refugee crisis, so in the future, presidential candidates should increase the amount of appeals and advertisements used in order to encourage Syrian refugees and other immigrants to ... • 10. Room 127 Quotes The best thing to give someone is a chance. If someone makes a mistake then you should forgive him or her and start over, and over and over. In Things Change forgiveness is all Johanna knows. No matter the mistake she always gives Paul another chance, even when it becomes difficult, harmful and deadly. I can describe the importance of room 127, a memory, the firebird as a safe and deadly place, and chocolate chip ice cream as an apology. Room 127 is a room full of despair for Paul. In that room is where he goes to be alone, to think, to be like his father. Room 127 holds nothing more than memories of a pathetic man and a computer, which Paul uses to talk to him. The computer holds many letters that say everything about Paul s life, everything his father never got to hear from him or experience because of his death. Paul uses the computer and those words for a sense of closure, telling his dad what he though of him and all of the mistakes he made, while he drinks his sorrows away just like his father. Leaving Paul was one of the worst things his father could have done, following the note that he left: Dear Paul I am leaving, please tell your mother. Everything is going to be okay. Trust me, Dad (Jones 162). Now all he has left to remember his father is his not so okay life, room 127 and his car, the firebird.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When inside the car there is no place to escape: He reached out to wipe the tears from my eyes, but I turned away, crunching myself into a little ball in the corner, the safest shelter I could find (Jones 129). • 11. Morley Callaghan Symbols Books are the foundation of diverse characters and themes, though are often overlooked; a reader finds intrigue by the story rather than the meaning written between the lines of the written text. The author works feverishly to bring these ideas forward through the variety of literary devices, however the hard work put into the noveldoes not necessarily achieve recognition. The Loved and the Lost by Morley Callaghan contains effective use of literary devices to develop the characters morals, and their position in society concerning social status and societal isolation. The techniques that author skillfully uses include flashback, dialogue and symbolism. Flashback works to characterize and shape each character, while dialogue creates interactions... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Callaghan excels in using symbolism with his knowledge on both society and the understanding of what the images represent. Symbols work to break down a character and present their opinions on society to gain a better understanding of what the individual believes in. Peggy Sanderson is an advocate for change in the treatment of black culture and is constantly showing her respect for the group that others oppress. A symbol that best describes Peggy s opinion is the river, which flows around the city of Montreal. It was those who wanted a change who preferred the broad flowing river (Callaghan 1), perfectly describing Peggy through the use of symbolism in nature. Peggy wants to see change in the world and her strive for change is like a river that is constantly flowing. Water in a river never stops and fresh water replaces it as it flows. Peggy never stops respecting the African American culture and will always speak her mind on the subject, despite what others believe. Similar to the river, the mountain is also an important piece of symbolism in the text. Symbolism creates a representation of the societal mindset and the ways by which a society works. Segregation in the text is more than common and the isolation between groups is prominent. In Callaghan s work, the white culture is racist and oppresses the black culture, remaining stuck in their oppressive ways. The belief that their ways should not change describes Catherine Carver, a young woman who has a divorce and engages in a romantic relationship with McAlpine. Catherine is the daughter of Mr. Carver, an aristocrat who is very set in his ways and does not believe in change, which he passes down to his daughter. Many statistics, however, are altered and can be deceptive at first glance. One example of this includes the claim that women make less money than men. When analyzing statistics of a set of data, one must take into account sample size and other parameters. In this particular example, it may be true that the mean of women s income is large in a sample of ten participants. Oedipus dire warning as he imposes on himself the penalty of exile: severe sentence // will be exile shows the reader that Oedipus is ignorant of the fact that he is the guilty one and that therefore he is inadvertently condemning his own future and his own life. Also, the quotation I curse him is another example of dramatic irony since the King is unaware that he is cursing himself and consequently, putting at risk and at danger his own future. This again shows the strength of the God s who are able to arrange and decide people s destiny. Later on the play, the audience discover him as being blind since he does not manage to see the truth about himself. Also, the Dictionary of Military and Associated Terms (2005) defines culture as A feature of the terrain that has been constructed by man. Included are such items as roads, buildings, and canals; boundary lines; and, in a broad sense, all names and legends on a map . In a nutshell, culture is everything that makes up the basic ways of life. Culture is comprised of five basic characteristics. Culture is learned, shared, symbolic, integrated, and dynamic (Bueno, 2012). This means that aspects of culture are spread by social interactions such as trade, language and other communication technologies. Some of the more common forms of communication technologies and language are movies, television shows, literature, arts, and local history. Symbolism is similar to the learned and shared aspects in many ways. Language, literature, and the arts are all major ways in which the symbolism of a specific culture is spread. The integration of culture is based on pattern. The specific dimensions of social life create social norms that are followed. The economy and politics are two of the more prevalent forms of social life that lead to the patterns of integration. Lastly, there is a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although the rate seems to be lower compared to the past, the violence rate is still shocking compared to other states. Therefore, violence in Chicago s neighborhoods and communities cannot be overlooked. Statistics show that 1,109 school aged youth were shot, and 216 of those were killed in 2010. As a student of UIC, I often receive crimealert emails as violencecases seemed to occur quite often around the campus area. In order to improve the public security to ensure residents safety, it is essential to find ways to solve these issues. It is because violence can cause negative effects in many different aspects. Besides individual s physical well being, it may also lead to some long term psychological problems; such as anxiety, eating and sleeping problem. Moreover, violence also affects the communityas it became unsafe to live in. The value of the properties will decrease because the quality of life became worse. These days, Chicago launched a cure violence program to help prevent the violence, and this program is managed by the Chicago Project. One of the most popular hybrid vehicles in the United States is the Toyota Prius, which, compared to a normal gas powered car, has great mileage and reduced fuel emissions. The popularity of the Tesla Model S a fully electrically powered car has recently skyrocketed due to the increase in gas prices. Hybrid technology powered cars, such as the Toyota Prius, are better for the environment than fully electric powered vehicles, such as Tesla s Model S, because of the emissions created by the electricity that powers the vehicle. The gas powered vehicle has been a problem for the environment since the day it was created. These vehicles emit greenhouse gasses that are detrimental towards the environment. This phenomenon usually occurs when a population of one species colonizes an area with many available ecological niches and when the rate of speciation is greater than the rate of extinction in a given area. Adaptive radiations have historically taken place after mass extinctions and on newly formed island archipelagos, because these incidences create conditions where new speciescan fill open ecological niches. Hawaiian drosophilid flies also provide an excellent example of adaptive radiation. There are around 800 species of drosophilid flies in Hawaii, and it is thought that they descended from one species of fly that colonized a Hawaiian island. In fact, it is possible that they speciated from a single fertilized female who was transported to Hawaii millions of years ago. Scientists believe that the Hawaiian drosophilid speciation is still occurring. This policy report will identify and discuss the evidence towards the key aspects of the relationship between abuse and neglect and the greater economic hardship which will have an impact on poverty and how this affects the chance of a child being abused or neglected. Looking at the evidence it is clear to see that there is a strong link associated between poverty and a child suffering from abuse and neglect. Introduction and context According to NSPCC there are more than 50,000 children in the UK are abused and neglected annually, this estimates that there are 8 children suffering abuse for every one child that is identified. This is a strong link between socio economic circumstances of families and the chances of the child experiencing abuse and neglect. The families socio economic circumstances affect the relationship across the whole of society and not just a simple divide of poverty. This is the second of Solomon s three poems. In these verses, wisdom is again personified as a woman and makes her proclamation, heard from far and wide, and does not wait for the audience to come to her. She represents herself as two nouns: Doth not wisdomcry? And understanding put forth her voice? (8:1). Understanding is another word for wisdom. For knowledge and understanding go hand in hand . The next few verses set up the setting in which wisdom makes her speech: She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors. Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man (8:2 3). Waltke s commentary elaborates on the position of her speech and explains that she speaks on the highest points, to be visible and audible as possible . Wisdom stands by the way in the places of the path , in which connotes where the masses walk on their way to choosing their lifestyle. This represents the point at where they must decide to follow either wisdom or foolishness. Her location at the gates implies that she is around a place where a lot of people gather on a daily basis, persuading them to stay away from the wicked. • 47. Summary Of The Land Use Act In Nigeria In, The Land Use Act, 1978 author J.K Agbosu considers the role of the act in the context of class relations in Nigeria. Namely, Agbosu (1988) argues that The Land Use Act, 1978, is a product of the inherent contradictions of the colonial and neo colonial dependent, pseudo capitalist. economic structures established in Nigeria since colonial times (1). Agbosu furthers this argument by proposing that the reason that the act, is in part contradictory to the norms of everyday Nigerians is the failure of legislators to look beyond their own classed perspectives and consider, [a] solution that not only abolished private ownershiprights in land but also abolished private ownership of other means of production (1). Indeed, Agbosu takes a decidedly Marxist perspective in his analysis of the law. However, the crux of the argument, which is that the post Colonial state offers its citizens no new possibilities in its application of citizenship rights, is valuable to the discussion of democracyin Africa. In his article, J.K Agbosu notes that the Land Use Act is in tension with traditional conceptions of land within Nigeria. In the pre colonial era, in most societies, land was viewed as communal property rather than a commodity; in other words, land was based around kinship ties. The purpose of the Land Use Act is to divest communities, and their respective leaders, of their shared role in the ownership of land and place it in the trust of the State. This shift in authority is not inherently unjust, but as Agbosu notes the movement from communal to State ownership does not act the groundwork for an equitable distribution of the land. Rather, the act seeks to impose a Western capitalist ideology of land ownership upon indigenous peoples. This is evidenced in the displacement of poor Lagosians in the 1990 destruction of the Maroko slum. The state government used the Land Use Act to legitimize their claim to the communal land, thus, forcibly moving thousands of low income migrants. The expropriated land was then given to a prominent and wealthy royal family; an action that would seem to contradict the alleged purpose of the act, which was to benefit all Nigerians (Ehirim Capitalism Central ).
