Hummingbirds Essay
On a nice spring day the buzzing sound of a hummingbird flying can often be heard, and people
look out the window for a chance to see the intriguing little bird. There are over three hundred
and fifty species of hummingbirds some as far south as Chile and others as far north as Alaska.
Hummingbirds are beautiful creatures that range five cm. to twenty cm. tall. The remarkable birds
are the only type of birds who can fly backwards and are characterized by their long beaks. With so
many different types of these fascinating birds most people don t stop to think they could be in
danger. Hummingbirdsare an endangered speciesbecause of the causes of they re endangerment,
what they need to survive, and the effects of their endangerment on humanity. There are many
different causes of hummingbird endangerment. When a species is considered endangered it means
the species is seriously at risk of extinction. One of the biggest causes is hummingbird s
vulnerability. Hummingbirds small size makes them very vulnerable to larger predators. With so
many larger predators catching the little birds their numbers are dropping. Climate change is really
hurting the small birds. As the climate changes the hummingbirds who migrate get confused when
they have to leave. If they stay in a cold area too long and don t go south the harsh winter can kill
them. Most of the hummingbirds however are getting killed when their habitats are destroyed.
Humans are destroying hummingbird habitats to expand

Military Apprenticeship Paper
United Services Military Apprenticeship Program (USMAP)
Veteran s today face many challenges as they seek civilian jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor
Statistics 2014 report more than 190,000 of the 2.8 million Gulf War II Veterans cannot find work,
USMAP could help resolve this issue (Watson, 2014). Senior Enlisted Leaders need to understand
the advantages USMAP in order to provide transitioning service members from active duty to
civilian life. This paper will provide the background information, discussion, and recommendation
for the increased use of USMAP.
Background Information
Veteranunemployment is an ever increasing issue for service members departing from active duty.
USMAP established as a formal military training program in 1999 through the consolidation of the
U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Naval apprenticeship programs, and the U.S. Coast Guard
apprenticeship programs in 2007, the program supplies service members with certification as
Journey Workers per standards of the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) in specific occupational
fields. USMAP could seriously assist in reducing the number of unemployed veterans. With the
background information provided, the discussion will provide further information.

Currently there are nearly 64,000 active apprentices enrolled. Service members are able to choose
the trade they pursue as long as it relates to their military occupation. Upon completion of the
program, participants receive a nationally recognized Completion Certificate to help attract
employers when a service member returns to the civilian workforce (Aleshire, 2012). A current
trend in USMAP shows an increase in personnel registering in the program, however due to current
deployments and schedules many members are not completing for the following reasons (Shatkin ,

George Orwell s The Girl From Everywhere
The Girl From Everywhere
I loved the amazing story of The Girl From Everywhere. My favorite part of the novel is between
the amazing setting both feelings and culture, the relationship between Nix and her father, and the
time travel in with all the different maps, and so many places they went.
This book is something special and should absolutely be a book you check out, and take the time
out to read.
Let me start by saying what a good author Heidi is. Not only is her story detailed, but her amzing
planning and setup of the plot leaves my mind with all expectations fulfilled.
Paradise is a promise no god bothers to keep. There s only now, and tomorrow nothing will be the
same, whether we like it or not.
The book takes place in late 1800 s Hawaii, and I liked how well Heidi has the vibes and feel of
the island of Oahu. The authors information towards the setting has me can t wait to visit and
feel and experience everything just as these characters did. I also really liked how Heidi captured
the turning point where Hawaii lost more of its Hawaiian culture, and became overrun by foreign
influence. It s a sad and tragic past, but someone has to tell it, but Hawaii was taken away from its
natural peacefulness in such a awful way. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She has a hard time with her desires and her idea of home and family. Slate, her father, is a
complex person. I loved this character in the book. Kashmir is dashing and comic relief. The
secondary characters were in and out of the book, but each had their own backstories. Mostly
everyone was likable too. One of my favorite parts of the book was the evolving relationship
between Nix and Slate. Slate s obsession with saving Nix s mother in the past really fractured any
genuine father daughter relationship. I loved seeing their relationship grow, and my favorite scene
in the whole novel happens between these

Aaron Blake s Uprising
Aaron Blake is trapped in Damascus, a city under siege from its own regime, a rebel uprising and
a new group of invaders taking advantage of the confusion, trying to introduce their own brand of
brutal laws. The hotel he has sought refuge in is taking hits from a deadly rain of bombs and
mortar shells when he spies two terrified children fleeing for their life and he decides to help,
quickly finding out that the uprising has left them orphans, as well as killing most of their family.
He heads for the British Embassy to find it deserted, and realises he is walking around with a
target on his back. A homosexual Brit escorting two young children in a place that considers such

Procedure Participants arrived to a classroom setting, where an experimenter greeted them. They
then provided the experimenter with informed consent, after which 17 different paper and pencil
questionnaires were administered. Of interest to this study, participants were asked to complete
the Rosenberg Self Esteem Inventory (Rosenberg, 1965; see Appendix A) on which they gave
themselves a rating of 1 to 9 on items designed to measure self esteem. Next, Participants
completed the 32 item Humor Styles Questionnaire (Martin et al., 2003; see Appendix B) designed
to obtain a score for each of the four humor styles (affiliative, self enhancing, aggressive, and self
defeating). Finally, participants were fully debriefed and dismissed. The entire

Causes Of The British War Memorials
1.The British war memorials allowed many people to openly grieve and remember the
thousands of soldiers who lost their lives. It allowed millions of people to come to terms with
the loss, isolate it, and establish its limits. War memorials became the place people grieved
individually or as a group. 2.The First World War is what many have called total war, which
means it was the first industrialized war among industrialized powers. The war material that
could be produced by those powers increased by a factor of thousands with the weaponry and the
projectiles that were fired at two sides. The 10 million that died in the First World War was by
far the largest toll of deaths because of the enormous weight of material that was turned into
artillery. In 1914, this was the beginning of mass death. There was no place to put the bodies (if
they could be found) of so many; this created a situation that made it impossible to literally
mourn the dead. The notion of a ritual set of practices that had been in existence for centuries
collapsed completely during this traumatic time period. 3.The similarities of the Tombs of the
Unknown all represent fallen soldier(s). Most are guarded 24 hour a day. It wasn t until 1920
when the idea came about to honor the fallen with tombs and within a few short years all countries
had their own tombs developed for their fallen soldiers. The differences are some tombs are
elaborate with the structural design and rituals: such as a pyramid for

Lazy Left Leg Case Study
Upon waking up from his nap, the man becomes very confused when he finds a severed human
leg in the bed beside him. He quickly throws the leg out of his bed and ends up on the floor beside
the bed. He is angry, and refuses to get back in the bed. He is confused, and complaining, that
someone has played a joke on him by placing a cold, hairy, severed leg under his pajamas while he
was sleeping.
He came to the neurologist to have testing done on what the doctors described as, a lazy, left leg .
In my opinion, it seems he has suffered from a CVA, and is demonstrating an unconscious, loss of
awareness of his hemiplegic leg. He took a nap in the hospital, and woke up in a panic, when he
found what he thought was a cold, severed leg in bed with

(The Muckrakers) The muckrakers were so important because not everyone was able to make an
impact like that in the era. By the second decade of the twentieth century, the movement had won
the support of both Democrats and Republicans. By the end they made a big impact. Women did
get the vote. Alcohol was outlawed. Child and female labor were regulated. The educational
system was revamped. Congress passed laws to regulate the manufacture of food and medicine.
Also the largest monopolistic trusts were taken out of court and broken up. The effect on the soul
of the nation was profound. It can hardly be considered an accident that the heyday of the
muckrakers coincided with one of America s most yeasty and vigorous periods of ferment. The
people of the country were aroused by the corruptions and wrongs of the age and it was the
muckrakers who informed and aroused them. The results showed in the great wave of
progressivism and reform cresting in the remarkable spate of legislation that marked the first
administration of Woodrow Wilsonfrom 1913 to 1917. For this, the muckrakers had paved the way

The Mysteries Of Udolpho, Frankenstein, And The Rime Of...
Ghostly evocations of terror, decrepit castles and manors, villainous tyrants bent on
destruction...and witty dialogue laced with irony and satire speaking of matchmaking, fall fashions
and the propriety of social actions? Pre dash, the elements of Gothic fiction permeate and resonate
throughout the Romantic era and are included in analysis of many such fiction and prose. The
Mysteries of Udolpho, Frankenstein, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, etc. display said aspects
and can be considered works of true Gothic horror. Emily St. Aubert (from Udolpho) acts in the
Gothic fashion when, examining the secret chambers of the deceased Marchioness, she witnesses
the supernatural apparition rising above the resting place and subsequently fleeing in terror. Such is
not said when Elizabeth Bennet refuses the wedding proposal from Fitzwilliam Darcy. To most,
Pride and Prejudiceis a work of romance and social satire; an apex in wit and dialogue. There are
no spectres at Pemberley nor is there an insatiable tyrant or haunted castle at Derbyshire.
However, there is a sense of fear amongst many of the characters. The houses are often large and
hiding a painful secret. And love, at least between a few, transcends the boundary into the
supernatural; or at least has elements thereof. Contrary to its popular, and overly common,
definition and perception, I will argue that Austen s Pride and Prejudice (hereon referred to as P P)
is an established piece of Gothic fiction, as it

These colonies according to Kipling needed protection from their surroundings.
Imperialism had an impact on the world because it created a new market for goods to be
exchanged. Countries in Europe were able to acquire new natural resources and raw materials for
further production. Then, these countries could sell their goods back to their colonies or elsewhere
in the world. The imperialistic movements also had a global impact because of the conflict that
arose between nations. Tension was building in Europe over the control of colonies and African
countries had to fight wars to make an attempt at retaining their freedom. Eventually, these wars
would be a factor in the causes for World War Ibecause Europeans were building conflict with one
another in an effort to show off their strength and power in Africa.
The assassination of the archduke Franz Ferdinand led to the beginning of the Great War. Though
that one event probably did not carry enough importance to cause a worldwide impact, there were
several factors such as the imperial wars and the arms race that also were important in causing the
war. The death of the archduke then was just a disguise or an excuse for these countries to go to
war because tensions had been building amongst one another for years. Like the Great Depression,
World War I affected Europe the most. Fighting in Africa did occur however and many of the
imperial colonies were at stake during

centralized Active Directory environment. More design and policy creation may be required to
produce a uniform way of Enterprise Applications existence in this environment. * Agility Growth
and restructuring are part of normal operations for Cornell University. The IT infrastructure needs
to handle these events as a more natural part of the IT ecosystem instead of as a major exception to
the IT operations. Organizational restructuring should not alter the structure of the directory service.

My Earliest Memory Of Science
My earliest memory of science in elementary school was in first grade. I remember walking into
the classroom early in the morning and seeing plant pots lined up in the back of the room. Of
course one of us asked, Mrs. Denny, what are those for? She answered like any experienced
teacher We will get to those after lunch. Thank you for noticing though. As a young student, I
was more interested about taking the plant home to my mom and showing her what I did. After
lunch, we went on a walk to the atrium in the center of the school. Mrs. Denny pointed out the
different kinds of plants that were in the atrium like flowers, and other small plants. We walked
back to our classroom and talked about what a plant needs to grow and finally got to make a
plant ourselves. We each had a cup of water, a cup of soil, a pot, and a plant. I also remember in
third grade learning about the weather by creating a big picture of the water cycle with the
clouds and why there is lightening and thunder. After we made the picture, we each got to write
down a question about weather and Mrs. Heffernan went over each one. I loved science when I
was little because I was able to explore and try new things. I struggled in math and reading
because they were very black and white but science allowed creativity. I enjoyed science in
elementary school because it was very hands on so I didn t have to sit in my seat. I would define
science has a content area that allows the individual to research and develop

Social Class And Underachievement In Sociology
Pursuing this discussion further, it could be implied that there is a connection drawn between
education and social class. Usually when conferring about these two aspects, social class and
underachievement becomes the focus of attention. Working class children experience a much
greater cultural clash when they enter schoolthan those from more privellaged homes (Giddens
and Griffiths, 2006, p.710). Gillborn and Youdell (2000) took this further suggesting how
teachers believed that ability was fixed (Darmody, Tyrrell and Song, 2011) and saw working
class pupils as having less ability and as lower achievers. Dunne and Gazeley (2008) also believe
that underachievers came from working class backgrounds and were labelled as underachievers
which resulted in many internalizing it and living up to the self fulfilling prophecy. Both
sociologists defined working class underachievement in a manner which was beyond outside their
control by locating their reasoning on aspects such as a low quality of life at home for such
individuals (Lawson, Heaton and Brown, 2010). And reflected in the minutiae of teachers
perception and interactions with students (Youdell, 2006, p.15) this is when teachers expectations
of working class students as lazy trouble some and middle class pupils as bright (Hargreaves, 1967)
is translated into actual outcomes affecting the educational achievement of different social classes.

Descriptive Essay On The Park
I was walking towards the park my father always took me to do my project when I was little, Let
me go! I heard a girl scream.
I tried to see where it was coming from, as I looked across the green grass wondering if it was my
imagination or not. The grass had been recently mowed and the trees had animals on them as if the
whole city was perfect. I heard it again, Please let me go!
I decided to put my textbooks and the designing journal down on the bench. In the city we live
in, there is no crime so nobody would steal my stuff. I tried to hear where the scream came from.
As I walked around the whole park, the sound grew fainter. I found where the sound was coming
from. I hid behind a big, green, and growing tree. She looked tired but strong. The guards didn t
look happy. It was rare seeing them since there is no crime in Yasashi. They had her in handcuffs.
She scanned the park. We locked eyes. Her eyes were a beautiful shade of purple. Her eyes were a
like mine. Except my eyes were a little brown and slowly turned purple. In Yasashi it was
common for people to have brown eyes. So it was rare seeing another person like me who had
purple eyes. So it was rare seeing another person with purple eyes. She was dressed in a blue

her purple eyes.

The Effect Of Sleep On The Regulation Of Emotional...
Introduction The goal of this study was to investigate the role of sleep in the regulation of
emotional reactivity and mood, and in particular the role of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.
The research team led by Rosales Lagarde measured the impact of total sleep deprivation (TSD)
by evaluating subjective responses to frustration and aversive stimuli. It was found that coping
skills and emotional regulatory abilities were decreased along with decision making skills
following REM sleep disturbances. It was also found that the subjects that experienced
disturbances in REM sleep displayed a greater degree of impulsiveness when faced with a risky
decision and favored utilitarian judgments. The data was collected using functional magnetic
resonance imaging (fMRI) imaging of the brain during the various stages of the experiment, and
during the administration of the Emotional Reactivity Task. It was found that there is a greater
and longer lasting activation of the amygdala while viewing negative stimuli, and specifically
following TSD. This study was based on previous research that suggests that REM sleep plays a
significant role in emotional regulation, as brain areas associated with emotion are specifically
activated during REM sleep cycles. These include the amygdaloid complex, medial and orbital
frontal cortices, and posterior association areas. Background Other related studies have evaluated
the effect of REM sleep in animals and emotional reactivity. It has been found

Having a strong set of ethics prepares you with the tools you need to be a critical thinker and
make proper decisions. Being aware of how you learn best is important as you want to use your
time effectively and use platforms in which you know you will retain the information better. It is
important to be able to reflect on our life and find ways of fixing what is not working effective.
Learning is not just academic but also personal.
Critical thinking is one of the main objectives in higher education. A critical thinker analyzes all
options and makes an argument based on facts. To be a critical thinker you have to be able to
look at different points of view openly and explore them as possibilities. You also have to able to
think logically and analyze the information and find evidence to back it up. When all information
is collected and analyzed, a critical thinker could create an argument with confidence. To become a
better critical thinker I will work on mastering Benjamin Bloom s taxonomy of learning which
states that for maximize learning we need to master this 6 levels of thinking: knowledge,
comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. When I m studying and going
through course work I will keep this 3 levels in mind and will practice each level. The goal is to
think all the way to level 6 which is creating an idea from the information learned. Mastering critical

Big Bang Research Paper
The whole universe began with the big bang/big bang model which explains the theory holding
that in just a couple seconds the universe originated, from the instant explosion of a extremely
small nebulae. Approximately 15 billion years ago all matter in the universe today existed in an
incredibly hot and dense state, from which it expanded and cooled slowly coalescing into stars and
galaxies we have today. As the big bangwas taking place only the lightest of elements would be able
to form (hydrogen and helium) seeing that due to such a tremendous extent of heat the first
elements would have to form under the condition that they are not neutral atoms or atomic nuclei.

12 Angry Men Analysis 6
In the movie 12 Angry Men all five methods of influence were used. The Methods of influence
such as use of reason, assertiveness, coalition building, higher values, and bargaining were all used
by the jurors; whether it was purposely or subconsciously. The influential methods used by juror
number eight were the most effective for many reasons.
Jurors number three, the messenger service owner, and number ten, the garage owner tried to use
the assertiveness method of influence to get their points across. They were screaming and berating
at multiple points during the film. It was very clear that they were not going to change their minds.

He often asked for other jurors to explain their point of view and elaborate on why they think that

motives. It turned out that this method was how Juror s three and ten were influenced to change
their votes from guilty to not guilty. Those two jurors subconsciously had individual motives to
why they believed the boy was guilty. Juror number ten was prejudice against kids and people in
general from the slums for whatever reason. His assertiveness peaked when he went into a rage
that caused other jurors to see his true colors. After this tyrant, it was clear to everyone that he
was prejudice. He also realized for himself that he was subconsciously prejudice and it wasn t a
good reason for him to vote guilty. Juror number three was just upset because he raised a son
who he hasn t seen in two years. Apparently, his son ended up becoming ungrateful to his father
and hasn t cared to see the father for at least two years. So, juror three was taking out the rage
and anger that he had for his son out on the boy on trial. He was the last one to alter his vote

The Contamination Of The Spinach Field Essay
We all know that poor and dirty conditions lead to the accumulation of bacteria and other health
risking factors. It is a violation of policy for health codes. This can be seen in the Mountain View
Farms most likely due to the fact that they grew the spinach in unfavorable conditions. There is
a possibility that the spinach field came into contact with the STEC O157:H7 through outside
sources due to the fact that they were exposed in dangerous conditions in outside environments
instead of being grown in a facility that is enclosed. In order to save and cut costs of
manufacturing spinach, the farm most likely planted their spinach outside. While this practice
is common, it is also unsafe as pollutants from other manufacturing companies and farms can
wash down into the spinach field. In this scenario, according to the map of nearby industries,
there are a few sources that could have exposed the spinach field to STEC O157:H7. The Floyd s
Pork Farm is the most suspected source as the dangerous strain of E. Coli can be contracted from
the animals through their food source and passed through their fecal matter. The feces are then
washed into nearby water systems by the rain and might not be filtered and processed completely
before being used. In this case, the water that was infected is being used for the irrigation system
to water and grow the spinach and other crops. Now the spinach has the E. Coli strain and then
being harvested to be bagged and sold off to the consumers. This

Universality Constraints
This essay discusses Rawls formal constraints of publicity and universality for theorising about
justice. I will explain what these constraints are and how they feature in Rawls theory of justice. I
will argue that they are reasonable constraints given certain assumptions Rawls makes concerning
the conception of a person as free and equal. I consider two objections; the first finds the publicity
constraint unreasonable; I will argue that it fails to constitute a valid objection. The second
objection concerns the universality constraint; it does not dispute the reasonableness of the
constraint, but disputes the ability of Rawls theory to satisfy the constraint. This is a much more
problematic objection. I conclude that Rawls constraints of publicity and universality are
reasonable, but that his theory does not fully satisfy this latter constraint.
Rawls aim in A Theory of Justiceis to construct a theory of social justice that is justifiable and
acceptable to free and equal citizens in society. He argues that such a theory should provide

It rejects the idea that principles of justice must be publicly known and accepted. Instead, it is
argued that systems for effective social cooperation are extremely complex, and that they often
make high moral demands of citizens. For these reasons, citizens cannot be expected to understand,
nor to willingly agree on principles of justice that govern such systems. The idea is that constraining
what can comprise principles of justice in this manner might lead to injustices caused by
misunderstandings of what morality requires, or by unwillingness to act in accordance with what it
requires. In order to avoid social disorder, the parties in the original position should not concern

Crown Insurance Services Case Analysis
CLAW3201 Case Analysis
Introduction
In Crown Insurance Services Ltd v Commissioner of Taxation (Crown), the issues raised are
pertinent to the residence and source of the company under s6(1) of the Income Tax Assessment
Act 1936. As cases are determined on the basis of all relevant facts and circumstances of each
case, this analysis will focus on how the court s decision process determined whether Crown had
carried on business in the years 2004 2007 inclusive and the existence of central management and
control (CM amp;C) in Australia. The purpose of this is to assess the valuation of Crown s taxable
income, which ultimately resulted in the objective decision to be set aside in favour of the

Following from this, it is logical to assume that Mr Pattenden had dealt with the reception and
decision towards the valuation of claims while residing in Australia, as it would be extremely
unrealistic for him to travel to Vanuatu each and every single time he received a claim that needed
processing. When now compared to Malayan Shipping, Crown appears to possess much of the
same indicative facts that had caught Malayan Shipping as a resident of Australia. Mr Sleigh had
similarly made decisions relating to his business while in Australia and had drafted contracts that
were then intended to be signed outside of Australia. This was seen as the essential test confirming
both carrying on business and CM amp;C in Australia. It is therefore possible to suggest that should
Crown be further tested in a higher court in the future, highlighting the case of Malayan Shipping
and focusing more on CM amp;C could potentially alter the case outcome.

Speech On Diet And Nutrition
Anyone who is on a quest to live a long and healthy life should understands how important diet and
nutrition are to achieving the physically healthy body. Most of us delve deep into exercise and
healthy eating but we gloss over the topic of nutrition. There is a distinction that should be made
between diet and nutrition, these two concepts are mutually exclusive. Dieting involves making
sure we eat right, cut out the fats and the carbs, count daily calorie intake in our quest to either
lose weight or get back to a healthier size. Nutrition looks at the food we eat. It has to do with
what our body derives from what we feed it in terms of nutrients.
In order to understand the role of food in your life you need to be educated about the kinds of
food you should be eating and those that you need to steer clear of. The Cardinal Rule when it
comes to food and fitness is that you need food to function, food is the fuel that will get you

DURKHEIM, SUICIDE, AND SOCIAL COHERENCE
Durkheim s study on suicide
Suicide (French: Le Suicide) was a notable book in the field of humanism. Composed by French
humanist Г‰mile Durkheim and distributed in 1897 it was apparently a contextual analysis of
suicide, a production one of a kind for its time that gave an illustration of what the sociological
monograph ought to resemble. Some argue that it is not a contextual investigation, which makes it

Durkheim reasoned that:

If you can t imagine a situation in which killing yourself seems like the best option, you simply
haven t suffered very much. Suicide is, in a sense, the last form of protest against suffering that is
too strong to make life worth living. Sometimes that suffering is purely organic there s something
wrong with your body and it s caused by nothing related to society. But sometimes, suicide is a
protest against being forced to function and give support to a society that is so unfair and unequal
that it s not worth staying alive.
Suicide is a perplexing issue with numerous aspects. Instead of giving in to a narcissistic
apprehension based perspective in which we trust suicide is never right for all individuals, we
ought to educate ourselves more about the reasons for suicide and how best to support individuals
at danger of suicide. A sweeping conviction that suicide is never right, or alright just in instances of
serious agony in end of life circumstances, is stating that suffering individuals have an obligation to
their family, companions, and society to keep on living in intolerable conditions, instead of saying
that society needs to work harder to make individuals lives endurable in the event that it needs

Pros And Cons Of The Postzygotic Barrier Of Species
What defines a species is a very difficult question to answer. Variations are everywhere, but at
some point those variations grow to where the species are different. Two common problems come
up when looking at what makes a species a species. The first is what to do with hybrids and when
are they considered a different species. The second is the issue of asexual reproduction. There are
many different definitions of the word species and they all have their pros and cons when it
comes to addressing these issues and describing what makes a species distinct from another
species. One of the most common definitions for species is the following, a group of populations
whose members have the potential to interbreed in nature and produce viable, fertile offspring but
do not produce viable, fertile offspring with members of other groups. This definition makes sense
when one thinks that a monkey cannot mate with a cat. The creation of viable and fertile offspring
depends on the avoidance of both prezygotic and postzygotic barriers that put a stop to it.
Prezygotic barriers refer to barriers that happen before creation of the zygote including habitat,
temporal, behavioral, mechanical, and gametic isolation. All of these factors prevent successful
mating. Postzygotic barriers happen after an offspring has been conceived. The... Show more

Shakespeare s Use of Language, Imagery and Setting to Illuminate Prospero s Journey from
Revenge to Reconciliation
The Tempest opens on a ship at sea caught in a tempestuous storm . This setting would
immediately suggest to the Elizabethan audience, the presence of danger and evil, as they would
be familiar with other Shakespearian plays where storms have been used in this way, for
example, Macbeth and King Lear. The desperate language of the characters in the opening scene
would further reinforce the audience s sense of evil afoot. The panic of the Boatswain is
illustrated when he cries A plague upon this howling and the terror of the passengers down below
can be heard as they cry Mercy on us! ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This very active opening establishes the theme for the play and the audience is left anticipating a
story of revenge and evil.
In Scene II, Shakespeare introduces a contrast to the storm through the setting of the island. At the
time Shakespeare wrote the Tempest, such a setting would have been significant to the audience as
many new lands and cultures were being discovered. These places were surrounded by myth,
superstition and fear of the unknown. The exchange between Miranda and her father Prospero
establishes that this is no ordinary island or plot. Miranda s opening speech suggests that her
father has magical powers, if by your Art, my dearest father, you have put the wild waters in this
roar, allay them . This suggestion that Prospero was responsible for the storm further reinforces
the idea introduced in the previous scene, that he is out for revenge, although the reason for his
desire for revenge is not clear at this point. The island s setting evokes ideas of magic and strange
happenings and suggests to the audience that anything can happen. Miranda s language contains
much dark imagery, which adds to the air of foreboding. Her statement that the sky would pour
down stinking pitch has unnatural overtones, suggesting that this was no normal storm.

Into Thin Air In Jon Krakauer s Into Thin Air
Jon Krakauer may not be loved or even respected by all but there is no denying he s an
adventurous man, courageous individual, and a brilliant writer. Jon Krakauer writes about climbing
Mount Everest in his non fiction memoir Into Thin Air in order to convey his message that the
greatest fight in life is man vs. the natural world.
Jon Krakauer has had a very interesting life. He was born in Massachusetts and moved to Oregon
(Hunter). A climber since 8, Krakauer s life revolved around climbing (About). After graduating
college, Krakauer spent his time as a fisherman and a carpenter to fund his climbing. When he
decided to become a writer, he wrote for a multitude of websites and magazines before and during
his time as a novelist. Although he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Before even writing Into The Wild, Krakauer wrote an analysis of the Everest disaster that won
him a National Magazine Award. Everest, his book about the big story, was widely acclaimed. It
was not only the #1 New York Times Bestseller but also Time Book of the Year and a finalist for
a Pulitzer Prize. In 1999, Jon Krakauer received one of the highest possible awards for a writer, an
Academy Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. The award was, to
honor writers of exceptional accomplishment, a bill that Jon clearly fit.

The Parson Compare And Contrast
Colin McDonald
EN1214
Assignment 1
This essay will explore two texts, the introduction to the Parson s Tale and Chaucer s Retraction.
Through the use of the Norton Anthology texts, and outside sources, we will look at the content
and tone of the Parsons tale to determine tone, analyze the character of the Parson. For Chaucer s
Retraction, we will observe the content and history to determine the reason for using this particular
style to end the tales.
The Parson as a character is often considered the only actual representation of good in the entirety
of The Canterbury tales. He is the only person who is seen as practicing his own advice. Not once
does he entertain the idea of altering the word of god, through rhyme or other means, to better
entertain his companions. Thou getest fable noon ytold for me (311/31), nor will they get poetry;
he can not rhyme his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The continuous use of references to Jesus, and Christ, such as I wol ful fain at Cristes Reerence
, and jesu for his grace with me sende.. add to idea that the Parson is really a God fearing man.
At some points, the parson goes as far as to call fables wretchedness, and asks why he should hurt
himself, when rather he could give a sermon to spread the word of god. It is clear that the Parson s
only goal is to instruct his companions on the topic of God.
Most everything that Chaucer wrote in the Canterbury Tales was critical of the church, clergy, or
religion itself. It is curious then that he finished the tales with a complete retraction. Why would a
man, who had devoted his life to writing about the fallacies in those in power around him, namely
the church, have such a sudden change of heart? Furthermore, why wouldn t Chaucer simply
prevent his works from being published, rather than write a full retraction, asking god and Christ to
have mercy on me and forgive my giltes and namely of my translacions and enditinges .(Retraction

Adhd and Piaget s Theories
PART ONE What is attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder? ADHD is a behavioral disorder that
is neurodevelopmental in origin meaning it is caused by a biological problem with the brain
functions that control emotions and learning (Low Birthweight in Newborns). Symptoms of this
disorder range from mild to severe, and not all children will have the same symptoms. Although
no main source is known to cause this disorder, doctors and researchers believe that ADHD
symptoms are linked to neurodevelopmental problems (Low Birth Weight in Newborns). Studies
are being done to conclude other possible causes, including low birth weight. Low birth weight is a
term used to describe babies who are born weighing less than three pounds, four ounces,... Show

During this stage, the child can engage in symbolic play, and have developed an imagination.
This child may use an object to represent something else, such pretending that a broom is a horse.
An important feature a child displays during this stage is egocentrism. This refers to the child s
inability to see a situation from another person s point of view. To test whether or not children are
egocentric, Piaget used the Three Mountain Task . Piaget concluded that the four year olds
thinking was egocentric, as the seven year olds was not. Children, at this stage, do not understand
more complex concepts such as cause and effect, time, and comparison. The third stage is the
Concrete Operational Stage, which occurs around age seven to age eleven. This stage marks the
beginning of logical or operational thoughts for the child. Their thinking becomes less egocentric,
and the child can now understand that although the appearance of something changes, the thing
itself does not. For example, if a child decided to spread out a pile of blocks, they know there are
still as many blocks as there were before, even though it looks different. The last stage of Piaget s
cognitive development is known as the Formal Operational Stage, which occurs between the ages
of eleven and sixteen. Adolescents have now gained the ability to think in an abstract matter, and
can now understand things such as science and algebra. The most distinct difference between the

Jane is often mistreated. One day, at Gateshead, the name of her residence, John Reed punishes

and cruel he is (Bronte 15). Mrs. Reed comes in and disciplines her for acting out by sending her
to the red room, the room where her uncle died. After spending a while in the red room Jane starts

Argument Against A Paid Maternity Leave Essay
All of the above are strong arguments for the pressing necessity of a mandated paid maternity leave.
Nevertheless, the many opponents of this initiative are arguing otherwise.
One argument against a paid maternity leave is based on the assumption that one of the parents
should not be working in the first place. In other words, a full time stay at home parent is beneficial
to the development of the child and therefore a paid limited time maternity leave is redundant and is
simply a waste of resources. Suzanne Venker, a writer, insists that According to Public Agenda,
70% of parents with children under age five believe having a parent at home is best. And 63%
disagree that children in daycare receive just as good care and attention as with a stay at home
parent. These findings are commensurate with 2014 Pew data that shows 60% of Americans say
children are better off when a parent stays home to focus on the family. ( Why Paid Maternity
Leave Is Not the Answer. ) According to these findings, Americans are unlikely to agree to
encourage mothers to put their children in childcare and go back to work, let alone spend money
on a paid maternity leave.
Nice try, Ms. Venker, but let s continue to read the mentioned 2014 Pew data till the end: Stay at
home mothers are younger, poorer and less educated than their working counterparts. For
example, 34% of stay at home mothers are poor, compared with 12% of working mothers. ( 7 Key
Findings about Stay at home Moms. ) Let s

  • 2. Hummingbirds Essay On a nice spring day the buzzing sound of a hummingbird flying can often be heard, and people look out the window for a chance to see the intriguing little bird. There are over three hundred and fifty species of hummingbirds some as far south as Chile and others as far north as Alaska. Hummingbirds are beautiful creatures that range five cm. to twenty cm. tall. The remarkable birds are the only type of birds who can fly backwards and are characterized by their long beaks. With so many different types of these fascinating birds most people don t stop to think they could be in danger. Hummingbirdsare an endangered speciesbecause of the causes of they re endangerment, what they need to survive, and the effects of their endangerment on humanity. There are many different causes of hummingbird endangerment. When a species is considered endangered it means the species is seriously at risk of extinction. One of the biggest causes is hummingbird s vulnerability. Hummingbirds small size makes them very vulnerable to larger predators. With so many larger predators catching the little birds their numbers are dropping. Climate change is really hurting the small birds. As the climate changes the hummingbirds who migrate get confused when they have to leave. If they stay in a cold area too long and don t go south the harsh winter can kill them. Most of the hummingbirds however are getting killed when their habitats are destroyed. Humans are destroying hummingbird habitats to expand ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. George Orwell s The Girl From Everywhere The Girl From Everywhere I loved the amazing story of The Girl From Everywhere. My favorite part of the novel is between the amazing setting both feelings and culture, the relationship between Nix and her father, and the time travel in with all the different maps, and so many places they went. This book is something special and should absolutely be a book you check out, and take the time out to read. Let me start by saying what a good author Heidi is. Not only is her story detailed, but her amzing planning and setup of the plot leaves my mind with all expectations fulfilled. Paradise is a promise no god bothers to keep. There s only now, and tomorrow nothing will be the same, whether we like it or not. The book takes place in late 1800 s Hawaii, and I liked how well Heidi has the vibes and feel of the island of Oahu. The authors information towards the setting has me can t wait to visit and feel and experience everything just as these characters did. I also really liked how Heidi captured the turning point where Hawaii lost more of its Hawaiian culture, and became overrun by foreign influence. It s a sad and tragic past, but someone has to tell it, but Hawaii was taken away from its natural peacefulness in such a awful way. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The secondary characters were in and out of the book, but each had their own backstories. Mostly everyone was likable too. One of my favorite parts of the book was the evolving relationship between Nix and Slate. Slate s obsession with saving Nix s mother in the past really fractured any genuine father daughter relationship. • 7. Causes Of The British War Memorials 1.The British war memorials allowed many people to openly grieve and remember the thousands of soldiers who lost their lives. It allowed millions of people to come to terms with the loss, isolate it, and establish its limits. War memorials became the place people grieved individually or as a group. 2.The First World War is what many have called total war, which means it was the first industrialized war among industrialized powers. The war material that could be produced by those powers increased by a factor of thousands with the weaponry and the projectiles that were fired at two sides. The 10 million that died in the First World War was by far the largest toll of deaths because of the enormous weight of material that was turned into artillery. In 1914, this was the beginning of mass death. There was no place to put the bodies (if they could be found) of so many; this created a situation that made it impossible to literally mourn the dead. The notion of a ritual set of practices that had been in existence for centuries collapsed completely during this traumatic time period. 3.The similarities of the Tombs of the Unknown all represent fallen soldier(s). Most are guarded 24 hour a day. It wasn t until 1920 when the idea came about to honor the fallen with tombs and within a few short years all countries had their own tombs developed for their fallen soldiers. (The Muckrakers) The muckrakers were so important because not everyone was able to make an impact like that in the era. By the second decade of the twentieth century, the movement had won the support of both Democrats and Republicans. By the end they made a big impact. Women did get the vote. Alcohol was outlawed. Child and female labor were regulated. The educational system was revamped. Congress passed laws to regulate the manufacture of food and medicine. Also the largest monopolistic trusts were taken out of court and broken up. The effect on the soul of the nation was profound. It can hardly be considered an accident that the heyday of the muckrakers coincided with one of America s most yeasty and vigorous periods of ferment. The people of the country were aroused by the corruptions and wrongs of the age and it was the muckrakers who informed and aroused them. The results showed in the great wave of progressivism and reform cresting in the remarkable spate of legislation that marked the first administration of Woodrow Wilsonfrom 1913 to 1917. Ghostly evocations of terror, decrepit castles and manors, villainous tyrants bent on destruction...and witty dialogue laced with irony and satire speaking of matchmaking, fall fashions and the propriety of social actions? Pre dash, the elements of Gothic fiction permeate and resonate throughout the Romantic era and are included in analysis of many such fiction and prose. The Mysteries of Udolpho, Frankenstein, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, etc. display said aspects and can be considered works of true Gothic horror. Emily St. Aubert (from Udolpho) acts in the Gothic fashion when, examining the secret chambers of the deceased Marchioness, she witnesses the supernatural apparition rising above the resting place and subsequently fleeing in terror. Such is not said when Elizabeth Bennet refuses the wedding proposal from Fitzwilliam Darcy. To most, Pride and Prejudiceis a work of romance and social satire; an apex in wit and dialogue. There are no spectres at Pemberley nor is there an insatiable tyrant or haunted castle at Derbyshire. However, there is a sense of fear amongst many of the characters. The houses are often large and hiding a painful secret. And love, at least between a few, transcends the boundary into the supernatural; or at least has elements thereof. Contrary to its popular, and overly common, definition and perception, I will argue that Austen s Pride and Prejudice (hereon referred to as P P) is an established piece of Gothic fiction, as it ... These colonies according to Kipling needed protection from their surroundings. Imperialism had an impact on the world because it created a new market for goods to be exchanged. Countries in Europe were able to acquire new natural resources and raw materials for further production. Then, these countries could sell their goods back to their colonies or elsewhere in the world. The imperialistic movements also had a global impact because of the conflict that arose between nations. Tension was building in Europe over the control of colonies and African countries had to fight wars to make an attempt at retaining their freedom. Eventually, these wars would be a factor in the causes for World War Ibecause Europeans were building conflict with one another in an effort to show off their strength and power in Africa. The assassination of the archduke Franz Ferdinand led to the beginning of the Great War. Though that one event probably did not carry enough importance to cause a worldwide impact, there were several factors such as the imperial wars and the arms race that also were important in causing the war. The death of the archduke then was just a disguise or an excuse for these countries to go to war because tensions had been building amongst one another for years. Like the Great Depression, World War I affected Europe the most. Fighting in Africa did occur however and many of the imperial colonies were at stake during ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. My Earliest Memory Of Science My earliest memory of science in elementary school was in first grade. I remember walking into the classroom early in the morning and seeing plant pots lined up in the back of the room. Of course one of us asked, Mrs. Denny, what are those for? She answered like any experienced teacher We will get to those after lunch. Thank you for noticing though. As a young student, I was more interested about taking the plant home to my mom and showing her what I did. After lunch, we went on a walk to the atrium in the center of the school. Mrs. Denny pointed out the different kinds of plants that were in the atrium like flowers, and other small plants. We walked back to our classroom and talked about what a plant needs to grow and finally got to make a plant ourselves. We each had a cup of water, a cup of soil, a pot, and a plant. I also remember in third grade learning about the weather by creating a big picture of the water cycle with the clouds and why there is lightening and thunder. After we made the picture, we each got to write down a question about weather and Mrs. Heffernan went over each one. I loved science when I was little because I was able to explore and try new things. I struggled in math and reading because they were very black and white but science allowed creativity. I enjoyed science in elementary school because it was very hands on so I didn t have to sit in my seat. • 14. Social Class And Underachievement In Sociology Pursuing this discussion further, it could be implied that there is a connection drawn between education and social class. Usually when conferring about these two aspects, social class and underachievement becomes the focus of attention. Working class children experience a much greater cultural clash when they enter schoolthan those from more privellaged homes (Giddens and Griffiths, 2006, p.710). Gillborn and Youdell (2000) took this further suggesting how teachers believed that ability was fixed (Darmody, Tyrrell and Song, 2011) and saw working class pupils as having less ability and as lower achievers. Dunne and Gazeley (2008) also believe that underachievers came from working class backgrounds and were labelled as underachievers which resulted in many internalizing it and living up to the self fulfilling prophecy. Both sociologists defined working class underachievement in a manner which was beyond outside their control by locating their reasoning on aspects such as a low quality of life at home for such individuals (Lawson, Heaton and Brown, 2010). And reflected in the minutiae of teachers perception and interactions with students (Youdell, 2006, p.15) this is when teachers expectations of working class students as lazy trouble some and middle class pupils as bright (Hargreaves, 1967) is translated into actual outcomes affecting the educational achievement of different social classes. ... • 17. The Effect Of Sleep On The Regulation Of Emotional... Introduction The goal of this study was to investigate the role of sleep in the regulation of emotional reactivity and mood, and in particular the role of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. The research team led by Rosales Lagarde measured the impact of total sleep deprivation (TSD) by evaluating subjective responses to frustration and aversive stimuli. It was found that coping skills and emotional regulatory abilities were decreased along with decision making skills following REM sleep disturbances. It was also found that the subjects that experienced disturbances in REM sleep displayed a greater degree of impulsiveness when faced with a risky decision and favored utilitarian judgments. The data was collected using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) imaging of the brain during the various stages of the experiment, and during the administration of the Emotional Reactivity Task. It was found that there is a greater and longer lasting activation of the amygdala while viewing negative stimuli, and specifically following TSD. This study was based on previous research that suggests that REM sleep plays a significant role in emotional regulation, as brain areas associated with emotion are specifically activated during REM sleep cycles. These include the amygdaloid complex, medial and orbital frontal cortices, and posterior association areas. Background Other related studies have evaluated the effect of REM sleep in animals and emotional reactivity. It has been found ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Those two jurors subconsciously had individual motives to why they believed the boy was guilty. Juror number ten was prejudice against kids and people in general from the slums for whatever reason. His assertiveness peaked when he went into a rage that caused other jurors to see his true colors. After this tyrant, it was clear to everyone that he was prejudice. He also realized for himself that he was subconsciously prejudice and it wasn t a good reason for him to vote guilty. Juror number three was just upset because he raised a son who he hasn t seen in two years. Apparently, his son ended up becoming ungrateful to his father and hasn t cared to see the father for at least two years. So, juror three was taking out the rage and anger that he had for his son out on the boy on trial. He was the last one to alter his vote from not guilty. • 23. The Contamination Of The Spinach Field Essay We all know that poor and dirty conditions lead to the accumulation of bacteria and other health risking factors. It is a violation of policy for health codes. This can be seen in the Mountain View Farms most likely due to the fact that they grew the spinach in unfavorable conditions. There is a possibility that the spinach field came into contact with the STEC O157:H7 through outside sources due to the fact that they were exposed in dangerous conditions in outside environments instead of being grown in a facility that is enclosed. In order to save and cut costs of manufacturing spinach, the farm most likely planted their spinach outside. While this practice is common, it is also unsafe as pollutants from other manufacturing companies and farms can wash down into the spinach field. In this scenario, according to the map of nearby industries, there are a few sources that could have exposed the spinach field to STEC O157:H7. The Floyd s Pork Farm is the most suspected source as the dangerous strain of E. Coli can be contracted from the animals through their food source and passed through their fecal matter. The feces are then washed into nearby water systems by the rain and might not be filtered and processed completely before being used. In this case, the water that was infected is being used for the irrigation system to water and grow the spinach and other crops. Now the spinach has the E. Coli strain and then being harvested to be bagged and sold off to the consumers. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Universality Constraints This essay discusses Rawls formal constraints of publicity and universality for theorising about justice. I will explain what these constraints are and how they feature in Rawls theory of justice. I will argue that they are reasonable constraints given certain assumptions Rawls makes concerning the conception of a person as free and equal. I consider two objections; the first finds the publicity constraint unreasonable; I will argue that it fails to constitute a valid objection. The second objection concerns the universality constraint; it does not dispute the reasonableness of the constraint, but disputes the ability of Rawls theory to satisfy the constraint. This is a much more problematic objection. I conclude that Rawls constraints of publicity and universality are reasonable, but that his theory does not fully satisfy this latter constraint. Rawls aim in A Theory of Justiceis to construct a theory of social justice that is justifiable and acceptable to free and equal citizens in society. The idea is that constraining what can comprise principles of justice in this manner might lead to injustices caused by misunderstandings of what morality requires, or by unwillingness to act in accordance with what it requires. Variations are everywhere, but at some point those variations grow to where the species are different. Two common problems come up when looking at what makes a species a species. The first is what to do with hybrids and when are they considered a different species. The second is the issue of asexual reproduction. There are many different definitions of the word species and they all have their pros and cons when it comes to addressing these issues and describing what makes a species distinct from another species. One of the most common definitions for species is the following, a group of populations whose members have the potential to interbreed in nature and produce viable, fertile offspring but do not produce viable, fertile offspring with members of other groups. This definition makes sense when one thinks that a monkey cannot mate with a cat. The creation of viable and fertile offspring depends on the avoidance of both prezygotic and postzygotic barriers that put a stop to it. Prezygotic barriers refer to barriers that happen before creation of the zygote including habitat, temporal, behavioral, mechanical, and gametic isolation. In Scene II, Shakespeare introduces a contrast to the storm through the setting of the island. At the time Shakespeare wrote the Tempest, such a setting would have been significant to the audience as many new lands and cultures were being discovered. These places were surrounded by myth, superstition and fear of the unknown. The exchange between Miranda and her father Prospero establishes that this is no ordinary island or plot. Miranda s opening speech suggests that her father has magical powers, if by your Art, my dearest father, you have put the wild waters in this roar, allay them . This suggestion that Prospero was responsible for the storm further reinforces the idea introduced in the previous scene, that he is out for revenge, although the reason for his desire for revenge is not clear at this point. The island s setting evokes ideas of magic and strange happenings and suggests to the audience that anything can happen. • 47. The Parson Compare And Contrast Colin McDonald EN1214 Assignment 1 This essay will explore two texts, the introduction to the Parson s Tale and Chaucer s Retraction. Through the use of the Norton Anthology texts, and outside sources, we will look at the content and tone of the Parsons tale to determine tone, analyze the character of the Parson. For Chaucer s Retraction, we will observe the content and history to determine the reason for using this particular style to end the tales. The Parson as a character is often considered the only actual representation of good in the entirety of The Canterbury tales. He is the only person who is seen as practicing his own advice. Not once does he entertain the idea of altering the word of god, through rhyme or other means, to better entertain his companions. Thou getest fable noon ytold for me (311/31), nor will they get poetry; he can not rhyme his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The continuous use of references to Jesus, and Christ, such as I wol ful fain at Cristes Reerence , and jesu for his grace with me sende.. add to idea that the Parson is really a God fearing man. At some points, the parson goes as far as to call fables wretchedness, and asks why he should hurt himself, when rather he could give a sermon to spread the word of god. It is clear that the Parson s only goal is to instruct his companions on the topic of God. Most everything that Chaucer wrote in the Canterbury Tales was critical of the church, clergy, or religion itself. It is curious then that he finished the tales with a complete retraction. Why would a man, who had devoted his life to writing about the fallacies in those in power around him, namely the church, have such a sudden change of heart? Furthermore, why wouldn t Chaucer simply prevent his works from being published, rather than write a full retraction, asking god and Christ to have mercy on me and forgive my giltes and namely of my translacions and enditinges .(Retraction ... • 49. Adhd and Piaget s Theories PART ONE What is attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder? ADHD is a behavioral disorder that is neurodevelopmental in origin meaning it is caused by a biological problem with the brain functions that control emotions and learning (Low Birthweight in Newborns). Symptoms of this disorder range from mild to severe, and not all children will have the same symptoms. Although no main source is known to cause this disorder, doctors and researchers believe that ADHD symptoms are linked to neurodevelopmental problems (Low Birth Weight in Newborns). Studies are being done to conclude other possible causes, including low birth weight. Low birth weight is a term used to describe babies who are born weighing less than three pounds, four ounces,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During this stage, the child can engage in symbolic play, and have developed an imagination. This child may use an object to represent something else, such pretending that a broom is a horse. An important feature a child displays during this stage is egocentrism. This refers to the child s inability to see a situation from another person s point of view. To test whether or not children are egocentric, Piaget used the Three Mountain Task . Piaget concluded that the four year olds thinking was egocentric, as the seven year olds was not. Children, at this stage, do not understand more complex concepts such as cause and effect, time, and comparison. The third stage is the Concrete Operational Stage, which occurs around age seven to age eleven. This stage marks the beginning of logical or operational thoughts for the child. Their thinking becomes less egocentric, and the child can now understand that although the appearance of something changes, the thing itself does not. For example, if a child decided to spread out a pile of blocks, they know there are still as many blocks as there were before, even though it looks different. The last stage of Piaget s cognitive development is known as the Formal Operational Stage, which occurs between the ages of eleven and sixteen. Adolescents have now gained the ability to think in an abstract matter, and can now understand things such as science and algebra. The most distinct difference between the ... • 52. Argument Against A Paid Maternity Leave Essay All of the above are strong arguments for the pressing necessity of a mandated paid maternity leave. Nevertheless, the many opponents of this initiative are arguing otherwise. One argument against a paid maternity leave is based on the assumption that one of the parents should not be working in the first place. In other words, a full time stay at home parent is beneficial to the development of the child and therefore a paid limited time maternity leave is redundant and is simply a waste of resources. Suzanne Venker, a writer, insists that According to Public Agenda, 70% of parents with children under age five believe having a parent at home is best. And 63% disagree that children in daycare receive just as good care and attention as with a stay at home parent. These findings are commensurate with 2014 Pew data that shows 60% of Americans say children are better off when a parent stays home to focus on the family. ( Why Paid Maternity Leave Is Not the Answer. ) According to these findings, Americans are unlikely to agree to encourage mothers to put their children in childcare and go back to work, let alone spend money on a paid maternity leave. Nice try, Ms. Venker, but let s continue to read the mentioned 2014 Pew data till the end: Stay at home mothers are younger, poorer and less educated than their working counterparts. For example, 34% of stay at home mothers are poor, compared with 12% of working mothers. ( 7 Key Findings about Stay at home Moms. ) Let s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
