Essay on Martin Luther King, Jr.
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Martin Luther King, Jr. was born at home on Tuesday, January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. His
parents were Martin Luther, Sr. and Alberta King.
He was born into a world where segregation was the law. Where his boyhood best friend, who was
white, wasn't allowed to play with him once they started school. Where black people went to
separate bathrooms, drank from separate water fountains, couldn't eat in "white's only" restaurants,
and had to give up their seats on buses if a white person wanted it.
Martin was a very intelligent boy. He was able to enter Morehouse College at 15 simply on the
strength of his scores on the college entrance exam taken during his junior ... Show more content on

D. in systematic theology. Upon graduating, he accepted a call to preach at the Dexter Avenue
Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama.
On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested for not giving up her seat on the bus to a white man.
The Montgomery Improvement Association (with King as their president) organized the boycott on
the bus company that lasted 381 days and lost them 65% of their profits.
In 1957, Martin helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and was its first
president.
Martin was arrested 30 times and spent time in jail (where he wrote "Letter From Birmingham
Jail"), had his house bombed, was arrested once for driving 30 in a 25 mph zone (haven't we all
done this at one time or another??), was stabbed, and finally, was assasinated. In 1964, because of
his work in the Civil Rights Movement, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for being someone
"who had contributed the most to the furtherance of peace among men".
In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voters Rights Bill into law. This law guaranteed
that "No person in the United States shall, on the ground of race, colour, or national origin, be
excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination". From

Princess Diana Dead! How Did This Happen?
A drunk driver, recognized as Henri Paul on an early Sunday 31st of August had drove a Mercedes
and crashed it into the Pont de l' Alma located in Paris, France. Killing himself, Diana Princess of
Wales, and her lover Dodi Fayed.
31st of August 1997 on an early Sunday an elliptical accident has happened. Diana, Princess of
Wales, Henri Paul, and Dodi Fayed has died in the exclamatory car crash. Social media has been
going crazy about this, and many other news channels have been informing others about this story
around the globe.

Diana was home schooled all the way up to the age of 9, then went to Riddles worth Hall boarding
school in Worfolk [9–12]. Then traveled to West Health school in Kent from age [12–16]. She was a
very poor student because she failed all of her 0–levels twice, and soon dropped out at age 16.
Princess Diana and Prince Charles practically grew up together in their childhood years. Prince
Charles has always been 12 years older than Diana. They soon met again when Diana was 16 at the
Althrop. At that time Prince Charles was dating Diana's older sister, Lady Sarah McCorquodale.
Princess Diana had made a lot of money, when she married into the "House of Windsor". She
decommissioned the world's foremost bachelor and signed on to produce the next heir of monarchy,
and she received more than $8 billion. Later, she had gotten the divorce of Prince Charles and the
newspaper offered $22.5 million. Enough to generate $1 million a year for the rest of her life.

Introduction:
The main aim of the present research is to study how Pragmatics works as a torch in the appreciation
of literature. Pragmatics is associated with the study of meaning as communicated by a speaker and
interpreted by a listener. This type of study necessarily involves the interpretation of what people
mean in a particular context and how the context influences what is said. It requires a consideration
of how the speakers organize what they want to say and under what circumstances. It also focuses
on the social, political and ethical aspects of

Biography of Edgar Allan Poe Essay
Biography of Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe was born at 33 Hollis Street, Boston, Mass., on
January 19, 1809, the son of poverty stricken actors, David, and Elizabeth (born Arnold) Poe. His
parents were then filling an engagement in a Boston theatre, and the appearances of both, together
with their sojourns in various places during their wandering careers, are to be plainly traced in the
play bills of the time.
Paternal Ancestry
The father of the poet was one David Poe of Baltimore, Maryland, who had left the study of the law
in that city to take up a stage career contrary to the desire of his family. The Poes had settled in
America some two or three generations prior to the birth of ... Show more content on

David and Elizabeth Poe (Sr.) had seven children David, the eldest son, becoming the father of the
poet. Two sisters of David, Eliza Poe (afterward Mrs. Henry Herring) and Maria Poe (later Mrs.
William Clemm) enter into the story of the poet's life, the latter particularly, as she became his
mother–in–law in addition to being his aunt. With her he lived from 1835 to 1849.
Young David Poe was destined for the law, but as previously mentioned, he finally left his native
city to go on the stage. His first professional appearance took place at Charleston, S. C., in
December, 1803. A dramatic notice of this performance in a local paper describes David Poe as
being extremely diffident while–
". . .His voice seems to be clear, melodious and variable; what its compass may be can only be
shown when he acts unrestrained by timidity. His enunciation seemed to be very distinct and
articulate; and his face and person are much in his favor. His size is of that pitch well fitted for
general action if his talents should be suited to sock and buskin. . . ."
This is perhaps the only direct evidence extant of the physical appearance of the poet's father. No
pictures of him are known to exist. His histrionic powers were at best very

Abstract: The objectives of this paper is to: (I) examine the underlying issues of poor performers
in organizations and to better understand the causal relationship between leadership style and
subordinate performance; (ii) to explore the perceptions of how bosses and subordinates mutually
influence each other 's behavior; and (iii) it is intended to heighten the readers' awareness on some

One might even speculate that this is related to the disappointing results in so many organizations
that have downsized. The emerging evidence (e.g. McKinley, et.al, 1995) questions the bottom–line
wisdom of downsizing. Many studies point to the negative consequences of downsizing in terms of
morale, commitment and the enduring work of the "survivors." This analysis discusses ineffective
employees and effective leadership qualities so that managers and employees can examine and
improve their skills. The conforming, loyal "organizational man and woman" of the 50 's and 60 's
(Whyte, 1956) has given way to the authorized, risk–taking "enterprising" employee of the 1990 's.
By freeing people of the bureaucratic encumbrances and "empowering" them to take action, New
Order organizations aim to promote success through more sophisticated collaboration, through
teams whose members represent and integrate different specialties, and through the heightened
interpersonal competence which arises as people fill their roles more passionately (Drucker, 1994).
A significant shift is taking place in organizations throughout the world–a shift that has important
implications for the skills that will be critical to your success both as a member of organizations and
as a manager and leader. This shift involves increasing the emphasis on the group or team.

Compare And Contrast Robert Peel And August Vollmer
Robert Peel and August Vollmer There were many men and woman who made significant
contributions to law enforcement and policing but Robert Peel and August Vollmer are some of the
most well–known men. Through all of the people who built the law enforcement system the term
general service law enforcement agencies is defines by Walker and Katz as agencies that regularly
engage in preventing crime, investigation crimes and apprehending criminals, maintaining order,
and providing other services. In the United States, police began in 1838 and officers had no real

11. Police officers should be hired on a probationary basis.
12. Police records are necessary for the correct distribution of police strength.
All of these principles still play a huge role in modern police. Police departments in America try to
promote community policing and work hard to partner with other police departments to work
together to solves issues in the community. Sir Robert Peel tried hard to include all issues of the
time in his principles, but he never could have predicted the modern day issues of gangs, cartels and
all of the other violence that has come about since his time. Law enforcement has had to change a
lot over the years to accommodate all of the problems they must deal with that Peel could not have
predicted.
Vollmer once stated, "The policeman's job is the highest calling in the world. The men who do that
job should be the finest men. They should be the best educated. They should be college graduates.
That's what policemen should be. And what are they? Dumbbells." According to a website called
study.com, Vollmer was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1876 but soon after his father's passing,
his mother moved them to Germany where he would study and grow up. It was not till Vollmer's
teen years that he moved to Berkeley, California where many of his accomplishments would come
about. Vollmer also served in the United States army and was stationed in the Philippines after the
outbreak of the Spanish–American War in 1892 and then

Feminism In Pygmalion
Pygmalion
(...through a Feminist Lens)
"Pygmalion was written to challenge the class system, traditional stereotypes and the audience's own
views."
To begin with, George Bernard Shaw was an early and outspoken advocate for the rights of women,
and as a playwright he created some of the most distinctive women characters of his day. He was
deeply influenced in this aspect of his writing by Henrik Ibsen.
This play deals with a lot many themes. To cite a few: Rewriting the tale of Cinderella and Sleeping
beauty, Class, language and phonetics and Independence.
From the very beginning of the play, we can see the unequal relationship between Mr. Higgins (the
man) and Eliza (the woman). This difference can be seen by the parallelism between these two ...

She retorts back by replying, "You want me back only to pick up your slippers and put up with your
tempers and fetch and carry for you." Eliza is mere domestic helper for Higgins, a helping hand to
Mrs. Pearce even if Eliza can be much more than that. This is the crude reality of the patriarchal
setup. Women, how much ever is qualified, is better than the opposite gender when it comes to
education, the opposite sex will always take her as a house maid or a person working under him.
Eliza, in the climax scene vulnerably asks Higgins, why he made her a sophisticated Duchess if her
never cared for her, and why did not he thought of the trouble it would make for her, on which
Higgins shocking reply says:
"Would the world ever have been made if its makes had been afraid of making trouble?" (Act V,
127) Making life means making troubles. He still finds faults with Eliza,' you are an idiot I waste the
treasures of my Miltonic mind by spreading them before you." Higgins thus suffers from intellectual
snobbery. He belongs to the world of Shakespeare and Milton.
All throughout the play, Higgins behave rude with Eliza. Eliza, in the last act as a representative of
all women trapped in patriarchal setup says the below quote to Higgins, who is the representative of
all the patriarchal men in the

Treatment of Death During the Renaissance and in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet
Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is arguably the most well known and well–read play in history.
With its passionate and realistic treatment of universal themes of love, fate, war, and death, it's not
difficult to see why. However, most people don't realize that there are several versions of the play,
each with their own unique additions and/or changes to the plot, dialogue, and characters. After
thumbing through the texts located here on this website, you can see even at a glance the distinct
differences between the versions of Romeo and Juliet. This essay will explore how people dealt with

The reactions of the Friar to Juliet's death in the Lamentable Tragedie, however, show a difference
of theology toward death that we, in contemporary society cannot fully grasp.
Peace ho for shame, confusions care lives not,
In these confusions heaven and your selfe
Had part in this faire maide, now heaven hath all,
And all the better is it for the maid...
...And in her best array beare her to Church:

Yet natures teares are reasons merriment (4.5)
Could it be possible that the Friar is advising the Capulets to rejoice in their sorrow for the death of
their daughter? And yet the text clearly illustrates the premise. How can this be true?
Social Background of the Period
In order to understand the meaning behind the "consoling" words of the Friar, we must first
recognize them in context to the historical period for which they were written. As a segue into this
next section I am reminded of an old story that was prevalent during

Essay on Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Mentors feature prominently in the Gothic genre. From Dr Van Helsing in Bram Stoker's Dracula,
who leads the young heroes into their quest to annihilate the Count, to Rupert Giles, the Watcher in
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, older and more experienced adults have provided essential guidance for
the younger protagonists of the genre. The differences in media of expression and the subsequent
adaptations from novel to television series has not affected the presence of this character, more than
a hundred years after the publication of Dracula in 1897. What also unites the novel and the series is
their fin–de–siècle resonance.

The old man always appears when the hero is in a hopeless and desperate situation and needs
guidance because his parents are absent or inadequate . Giles indeed appears as, to quote Xander in
'Never kill a boy on the first date' (1:5), 'super librarian'. Defined through his knowledge of books
and his appetite for them, his strength is also typically his weakness, as his predicament in
'Nightmares' (1:10) shows. His anguished though characteristically understated call, 'I'm having a
problem. I – I can't read', points to his Achilles' heel.
In the first three series of the show taking place in Sunnydale High, Giles's lair is the library. After
Buffy enrols in university, Giles's bachelor flat becomes the de–facto library of the Scooby Gang.
His bookishness defines him and gives him his role among the cast of protagonists. In 'Primeval'
(4.21), Giles's contribution to the group's attack against Adam is his intelligence, 'Sophus', his mind.
Giles is the brain of the group, Buffy the hand that strikes. Similarly, Van Helsing in Dracula
intervenes in the novel when the young characters need someone with access to occult lore to
explain Lucy's ailment. His knowledge defines him too: Jack Seward refers to him for the first time
as 'Professor Van Helsing, of Amsterdam, who knows as much about obscure diseases as anyone in
the world' (Dracula, 111), and alter as 'Van Helsing, the great specialist' (Dracula, 117).

TIMOTHY VINES∗
Blake's Songs of Innocence and of Experience are a much studied part of the
English canon, and for good reason. Blake's work depicts a quandary that continues to haunt
humanity today: the struggle of high–order humanity against the 'real' rationality and morals of
institutionalised society. This essay seeks to explore both Blake's literary reaction to the

Introduction
The Hawthorne Experiments were conducted between 1927 and 1932 at the works of the Western
Electric Company in Chicago. Basically the aim of these experiments was to " attempt to reduce
worker dissatisfaction and resist trade union influence by the putting in place of a paternalistic
package of social and recreational benefits calculated to sustain workers "loyalty" (Sheldrake

In the process, he stumbled upon a principle of human motivation that would help to revolutionize
the theory and practice of management.
Contributors of the Hawthorne Studies
A number of sociologists and psychologists made major contributions to the study of the
neoclassical perspective, which is also known as the human relations school of thought. The main
contributors of the Hawthorne Studies are: Elton Mayo, Hugo Munsterberg, Abraham Maslow,
Douglas McGregor, Mary Parker Follet.Hugo Munsterberg is the father of 'Industrial Psychology'.
He is a German Psychologist. He established a psychological laboratory at Harvard in 1892 and his
pioneering book, Psychology and Industrial Efficiency was translated into English in 1913.
Munsterberg suggested that psychologists could make valuable contributions to managers in the
areas of employee selection and motivation. Industrial psychology is still a major course of study at
many colleges and universities. Another early advocate of the behavioural approach to management
was Mary Parker Follet (18681933). Follet worked during the scientific management era, but
quickly came to recognize the human element in the workplace. Indeed, her work clearly anticipated
the behavioural management perspective and she appeared the need to understand the role of
behavioural in organizations. Although Munsterberg and Follet made major contributions to the
development of the behavioural approach to management, its

The Ethical Imperative Of Recovery Oriented Practices
The aim of the assignment is to critique two research articles; Mental illness and wellbeing: the
central importance of positive psychology and recovery approached (Slade, 2010) and Preserving
the Person: The Ethical Imperative of Recovery–Oriented Practices (Atterbury , 2014)and its impact
on practice. For both articles the dominant theme which runs through is recovery.
There is no exact meaning of recovery in mental health. Professional meaning of recovery
differentiate between clinical recovery, where there is no symptoms, and social recovery, where one
live on their own even if symptoms continue (Social Care Institute for Excellence 2007). Recovery
is the process of coming back to a normal state. Other meanings see the growth of people controlling
their own life and the taking of responsibility for one's own behaviour and well–being as the basis of
recovery. (Anthony, 1993)
Objectives
The objectives of this essay are to critique the authors' credentials, compare and critique the articles,

Robert Louis Stevenson Today Is Best Remembered As A Writer
Robert Louis Stevenson today is best remembered as a writer of the Victorian Gothic and in
particular for his novella, Jekyll and Hyde (1893). In this work, Utterson, a lawyer, discovers the
horrible secrets his friend, Dr. Jekyll, has been hiding from him and the consequences that result.
Straying away from mainstream science, Jekyll pursues his own catastrophic interests in order to
separate the two sides of his morality and thusly creates his brutish double, Hyde. This text
introduces the idea of human duality and brings forth the question of morality. However, duality,
although important, is only one aspect of this novella, and there are other points of intrigue. An
example of this intrigue is the role of women or rather the lack of ... Show more content on

As a result, Jekyll has no understandable justification to explain his experimentation, and his
character can come across as irrational. Next, Campbell argues that, in order to focus on how the
patriarchy operates and fails within the context of the novella, women were eliminated. As
previously stated, this text revolves around a male–centric plot in which women do not play a role.
Essentially, this story is about "communities of men", focusing on their interactions and experiences
in the London city as they attempt to uncover the secret of Hyde (Hampson 109). In theory, women
could potentially distract from the story that Stevenson wanted to tell, and he consequently removed
women from any important role (Eberle–Sinatra and Beauvais 151). Moving on, Stevenson himself
even claimed to have difficulties bringing characters to life, in particular women, and this problem
extends to some of his other works where women, and love as well, play a small role in comparison
to the importance of the male characters (Linehan 34). While expressing disdain with male vanity
and also with men's typical perceptions of women, Stevenson also conveyed fascination with the
idea of how men underestimate women. By excluding women from his story, Stevenson may have
cleverly demonstrated this underestimation, using both himself, as the writer, and the male
characters in Jekyll and Hyde to explain this phenomenon. Nonetheless, some

Nursing Is The Largest Health Care Occupation
Alyssa Yzaguirre English IV–3 Mrs. Boyd 5 November 2014 Registered Nurse There are
approximately 2.6 million registered nurses. Nursing is the largest health care occupation. Nursing is
also one of the fastest growing occupations in the United States. Only three out of five nurses work
in hospitals. By examining the levels of education needed, job responsibilities, salary and job
outlook, a career in nursing would be highly suitable as a career path. Nursing dates back to the

The higher the education, the more advantages a nurse will have in the workforce. Some hospitals
prefer to hire only those nurses with bachelor's degrees. All states require nurses to be licensed,
which means to become a nurse you must pass a national license exam after graduating from a
nursing program (Career cruising, Registered Nurse). The employment outlook for nurses is
expected to grow each year. Potential nurses go through a difficult time during their studies.
However, the reward of a nursing degree outweighs the stress to achieve the degree. Regardless, of
where a nurse might choose to work, RN's functions, for the most part are similar. They are the first
medical personnel a patient has contact with. Their duties might include, evaluate patients by
recording patients' medical history and symptoms, take vitals, observe and record the condition of
patients, administer medication under the direction of a physician, help to perform diagnostic tests
and analyze results, and treat and teach patients and their families how to manage illnesses or
injuries (Gale Student, Registered Nurse). A nurse will even call patients upon request or call to see
how a patient is recouping. RN's can also work as nurse educators or as researchers in hospitals. A
registered nurse (RN's) is a highly pursued career due to the salary an RN can earn. A RNs salary
can vary depending on education, experience, and area of

corruption held in one level of law enforcement, but throughout the three levels including the state,

The Curriculum Policy Statement Of The Council On Social Work
Problem Statement, Background, and Research Interest The Curriculum Policy Statement of the
Council on Social Work Education (CSWE, 2001), the accrediting body of all bachelor 's and master
's social work degree programs in the United States, requires all social work programs to teach
students how to promote economic and social justice. The revised Code of Ethics (1996) of the
National Association of Social Workers proclaims the pursuit of social justice one of the profession
's core values and establishes as an ethical imperative, "Social workers challenge social injustice"
(NASW, 1996, p. 5). At first glance, these statements give the appearance of a trade which has
retained its professional identity regardless of the opposition demonstrated by the current trends in
social, political, and economic policy; however, upon closer inspection these phrases seem archaic,
even patronizing as they assume that social workers work for rather than with people. Then what do
these statements really signify? For nearly four decades, pundits have consistently proclaimed the
bankruptcy of socialist ideas, the fascist evils lurking in communism, the triumph of the free market
and liberal democracy... the so–called end of history (Fukuyama, 1992). Proposals to privatize
Social Security, the cornerstone of what 's left of the U.S. welfare state, have gained credibility and
popularity, even a sense of inevitability. The working class has learned to consistently vote against

Florence Nightingale, Joseph Lister, And Edward Jenner
How did medical professionals have the knowledge and professionalism necessary to do their jobs?
Three individuals improved how medicine is practiced and the precautions to take. Hippocrates once
said, "It's far more important to know the person the disease has than what disease the person has."
The three pioneers of the medical field Florence Nightingale, Joseph Lister, and Edward Jenner
changed the way medicine is practiced today. Firstly, Florence Nightingale was born in Florence,
Italy on the 12th of May in 1820. She had a very wealthy family. When Florence was sixteen years
old on February 7, 1837, she heard the voice of God calling her to carry out some special work. As
she had the want to help people, she was lead to believe that God wanted her to be a nurse. Being a
nurse was unusual for the upper class because nurses were known to come from poor families. The
want of becoming a nurse never went away so she went to Kaiserwerth to nurse training (James). In
addition, Florence actually lead a team of 38 nurses to staff an overseas hospital of the British army
during the Crimean War. It was reported that there were unsanitary conditions that got the public
concerned, so the secretary requested for a team of nurses to provide help. When Florence and her
team arrived, conditions were extremely worse than reported. The wards were covered in sewage
and patients were scattered everywhere. The rags that the patients were covered in blood and
excretion soiled in them.

A Cubist Perspective of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream
"The great cycle of the ages is renewed. Now Justice returns, returns the Golden Age; a new
generation now descends from on high." – Virgil, Eclogues 1.5
As Virgil stated so many years ago, history is a cyclical phenomenon. The experiences of one age
tend to be repeated in future generations. Knowing that, we should not be surprised to find the seeds
of modern styles and philosophies sprouting in earlier ages.
Elizabethan England was a society undergoing major social changes. In religion the country had
recently left the fold of Catholicism to establish the Church of England. While England during this
time was a major world power, she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Cubist artist wanted to show multiple views of one object at the same time. This attempt to
represent multiple viewpoints simultaneously was opposed to the renaissance artist's attempt to
establish a single viewpoint#. In Midsummer Night's Dream, a play that belongs to the period of the
late renaissance, William Shakespeare has managed to incorporate the same elements we use to
define Cubist art.
As Alexander Leggatt points out, this play is divided into four different groups of characters; the
lovers, the older Athenian citizens, the fairies and the "rude mechanics."# Each of these groups
proceeds through the play as a separate plane or playing field that intersects the other fields in
proscribed and largely ceremonial ways. The interaction of the different groups helps to define each
group and at the same time keeps them separate.
At the center of the play, the object which is divided up and examined in multiple perspectives is
love. The four groups each show a different aspect of love and the interaction within and among the
groups

Essay Analysis of Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
Analysis of Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
Charles Dickens, the revolutionary 19th century novelist, wrote a bildungsroman of Phillip Pirrip
(Pip) and the reality of his own "Great
Expectations" in his pursuit to become a gentleman. In Chapter 8, the reader is introduced to Miss
Havisham and Estella and this is where
Pip first becomes dissatisfied with the life at the forge.
There were many writers in Dickens' day whose works are no longer read; this is possibly because
Dickens did something idiosyncratically different from his contemporaries. The plot of Great
Expectations is quite complex, yet it is the way that Dickens handles the various elements of the plot
that makes the novel appealing. For instance, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By introducing this character, the questions of why she is withdrawn and how this is related to the
subplot concerning the convicts are left unanswered. It is not until during Chapters 40–42 that the
reader finds out about Miss Havisham's connection with the convicts. Dickens is deliberately vague
about Miss Havisham's past. This allows him later to introduce the idea that she might be Pip's
benefactor.
From the first point of contact Dickens is creating twists and turns later in the novel.
The eccentricity and eeriness of Miss Havisham fascinates the reader, as she is one of fiction's
"strangest"(Ch. 8 p. 46) women. Questions are posed in this chapter about the connection between
her and Estella and why is she wearing "bridal dress" (Ch. 8 p. 50). The reader may assume several
reasons but their innate inquisitiveness helps propel the novel forward.
This device is used because of the structure of the novel. It was originally printed in weekly
instalments. This means that Great
Expectations does not have the structure of a conventional novel.
Instead of moving towards a general climax, the story has many mini–resolutions of the plot. Each
new episode needed a cliffhanger–type ending in order to ensure that the public would buy the next
instalment. This has often been seen as a weakness of Charles
Dickens' novels as the story can become repetitive. An advantage of this is that the original reader, if
having missed an issue, can have

Jane Austen 's Pride And Prejudice
The book Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is a book that mainly focuses on the romantic dramas
of a small society of rich people in and around the town of Hertfordshire. In her book, Jane Austen
portrays some of the common characteristics of people as they try to find a mate. She uniquely
illustrates the romantic dramas people encounter in everyday life. Although Pride and Prejudice
certainly pertained to the living style of the 1800's, its concepts, and analysis of human nature still
apply today. Austen shows the psychology of romantic dramas that are common in human nature, as
she conveys these concepts throughout Pride and Prejudice. We get a better understanding of
ourselves as we watch the different characters interact as their relationships unfold.
In a town called Hertfordshire near London, the Bennets; Mr. and Mrs. Bennet, and their five
daughters, are surrounded by a few neighbors all within their limited rich society. And because they
live as the minority of rich people in society, naturally the marriage choices are limited which
sometimes leads to dramas concerning marriage and its romantic indications. This story, Pride and
Prejudice, is a story of the romantic dramas that ensue from these interactions. For the Bennet
family, excitement stirred when there was an announcement that a well–off gentleman by the name
of Charles Bingley who moved into a nearby estate. Mrs. Bennet was ecstatic with the prospect of

Much Ado About Nothing Eros Analysis
In both Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, a
power inequality exists between eros and philia. While the quest to obtain eros drives the plotlines
of both Pride and Prejudice and Much Ado About Nothing, ultimately it is the power of philia that
allows the characters to obtain romantic love. In this paper, I will compare the power of eros and
philia in Pride and Prejudice and Much Ado About Nothing, and demonstrate that philia is the most
powerful love. Philia is not only powerful because it has the ability to influence the creation or
destruction of eros, but also because the characters in the texts place a greater value upon this love.
In Pride and Prejudice, the novel begins upon this premise: "it is a truth universally acknowledged
that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife" (Austen 1). Austen's use
of the words universal and truth are significant, as it indicates her satirical view of this societal
belief. Through her use of satire, Austen implies, while her novel centers upon the development of
eros, it is not necessarily the most important of loves. Austen ... Show more content on

Comparing the friendships in both texts, it is evident that loyalty is a common characteristic of
friendship. This is because, unlike eros, philia is not a natural love; therefore, the bond that unites
friends is one of choice and commitment. Conversely, as eros is an innate love, often devoid of
choice, one does not posses that same commitment to exhibits loyalty to the object of their desire.
This understanding of the nature of eros and philia leads many to agree that in true love, there is an
element of friendship. I believe this to be true, because while the passion of eros may initially bring
a couple together, it is ultimately the superior power of friendship which allows love to

The Rings of Power:
Symbolic Exchange in The Merchant of Venice
Rings are significant to the narrative of The Merchant of Venice for several reasons. Firstly, as
symbols of love, wealth and power. Secondly, as a means through which Portia gives and then
regains control of herself, her weath and power and finally, the theft and sale of Leah's turquoise
ring acts as a source of sympathy towards Shylock and allows him to parallel the Christian
husbands, Bassanio and Graziano.
A ring is, in and of itself, a frivolous object; it serves no practical purpose and its only functions are
symbolic and aesthetic. They are thus also a symbol of the wealth and power of the owner; a
demonstration that they have so much money they can afford to ... Show more content on

This is particularly notable in the case of Portia, due to her assumption of traditionally masculine
traits over the course of the text, and the exchange of rings ultimately allows her to reclaim her own
autonomy.
In giving Bassanio her ring, Portia assumes the traditionally masculine role, both in giving the ring
and in giving herself, a role usually belonging to the father of the bride:
...But now, I was the lord
Of this fair mansion, master of my servants,
Queen o'er myself;... (3.2.167–9)
By referring to herself as the 'lord' and 'master' of the house rather than the 'lady' and 'mistress',
Portia makes it clear that she has been in charge of and running the estate since her father's death,
rather than the more traditional female role of managing only the household. Interestingly, she then
uses the feminine "queen" rather than king, which on the surface might seem to undermine this,
however, a female Monarch maintains their power upon marriage, rather than having to surrender it
to her husband, and holds power in her own right. Further, like Portia, some queens gave, rather than
received rings: Mary, Queen of Scots, sent Thomas Howard, the Duke of Norfolk, a ring to indicate
her willingness to marry him, and Queen Elizabeth gave the Earl of Essex a ring as a token of
affection.
Unlike a queen, Portia yields her power to Bassanio along with her hand:
This house, these servants and this same myself,

The Death Of Sir Richard Steele
The best remembered periodical essayist, dramatist, and a politician was a man named Sir Richard
Steele. His birth date is not known but it is known that he was baptized on March 12, 1676 on
Dublin, Ireland. Richard Steele's father was also named Richard Steele; he was an attorney and his
mother's name was Elinor Sheyles; her occupation was not said. Unfortunately, after his parents
passed away in 1676. Steele was placed under the guardianship of his uncle, Henry Gascoigne,
which was secretary of to the Duke of Ormonde. One of his challenges he faced was that he only
had one stage failure in 1703, which was The Lying Lover, that had only ran for six nights. As Steele
said "damned for its piety." (Mutter) Another challenged he faced was ... Show more content on

Ten editions were sold in his lifetime. Steele was accused of hypocrisy and mocked for the
differences between his attitude precepts and genial convivial practice. In Steele's plays the
moralistic tract would be echoed. Later that same year, Steele wrote his first comedy The Funeral or
Grief A–la–mode. It was successfully performed at Drury Lane. This play made his reputation look
good and was noticed by King William and the Whig leaders. Late in 1703, his second comedy, The
Lying Lover was the only stage failure Steele had. It only had six runs. In 1705, Joseph Addison
helped Steele with his third comedy called The Tender Husband. It was also a success, might have
been because Addison put in his part by helping Steele.
On August 12, 1709, Steele had released his paper called The Tatler, to be published thrice–weekly.
It continued with Addison's help. The Tatler issues were authored by Steele. Addison writing about
46 on his own and working with Steele he had about 36 done. The Tatler unfortunately discontinued
on January 2, 1711. The reason for this is uncertain but mainly because of political reasons. Under
the name of Isaac Bickerstaff, Richard Steele made a mixture of entertainment and instruction in a
manner of morals that was going to be perfected in The Spectator. Richard Steele wrote this "The
general purpose of the whole has been to recommend truth, innocence, honor, and virtue, as the

A Streetcar Named Desire: the Importance of Being Earnest
The Importance of being earnest
Themes
Themes are the fundamental and often universal ideas explored in a literary work.
The Nature of Marriage
Marriage is of paramount importance in The Importance of Being Earnest, both as a primary force
motivating the plot and as a subject for philosophical speculation and debate. The question of the
nature of marriage appears for the first time in the opening dialogue between Algernon and his
butler, Lane, and from this point on the subject never disappears for very long. Algernon and Jack
discuss the nature of marriage when they dispute briefly about whether a marriage proposal is a
matter of "business" or "pleasure," and Lady Bracknell touches on the issue when she states, "An
engagement should ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In some ways, Algernon, not Jack, is the play's real hero. Not only is Algernon like Wilde in his
dandified, exquisite wit, tastes, and priorities, but he also resembles Wilde to the extent that his
fictions and inventions resemble those of an artist.
The Importance of Not Being "Earnest"
Earnestness, which implies seriousness or sincerity, is the great enemy of morality in The
Importance of Being Earnest. Earnestness can take many forms, including boringness, solemnity,
pomposity, complacency, smugness, self–righteousness, and sense of duty, all of which Wilde saw
as hallmarks of the Victorian character. When characters in the play use the word serious, they tend
to mean "trivial," and vice versa. For example, Algernon thinks it "shallow" for people not to be
"serious" about meals, and Gwendolen believes, "In matters of grave importance, style, not sincerity
is the vital thing."
For Wilde, the word earnest comprised two different but related ideas: the notion of false truth and
the notion of false morality, or moralism. The moralism of Victorian society–its smugness and
pomposity–impels Algernon and Jack to invent fictitious alter egos so as to be able to escape the
strictures of propriety and decency. However, what one member of society considers decent or
indecent doesn't always reflect what decency really is. One of the play's paradoxes is the
impossibility of actually being either earnest (meaning "serious" or "sincere") or moral while
claiming to be so. The

Pride and Prejudice Essay
Pride and Prejudice
The novel Pride and Prejudice written by Jane Austen was originally to be called First Impressions.
Hence the ultimate aim of this essay is to identify how successful this novel is in giving 'First
Impressions' of the characters. The focus of this essay is on the opening chapters of the novel as this
is where we are first introduced to the characters. 'It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single
man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.' This is one of Austen's famous
quotes and sums up the main theme of the novel; that in the time this novel was written all men with
a good wage are eligible bachelors in finding a woman to marry. I would consider this idea to be put

Due to
Lydia's wrong doings the Bennett's have descended in the hierarchy.
The only way the Bennett sisters can redeem their reputation, status in society and moreover be able
to get married to someone in their own class is if Lydia Bennett marries Mr. Wickham. Today such a
situation wouldn't be frowned upon; however in Austen's day there would be harsh consequences.
Ultimately, this indicates the difference in social historical background.
Jane Austen began writing the novel during the turn of the century in
1796, as she was writing the novel she wished to call it First
Impressions. However, after much re–drafting the novel was published under the title Pride and
Prejudice in 1813. Jane Austen was born in
Steventon, Hampshire on 10th December 1775. She was the daughter of a clergyman and one of 8
children. Many thought that Jane wrote her novels on the basis of her social knowledge as this is all
she knew about and believed she was unaware of major world events. Strictly speaking this is
incorrect. Her brothers, to whom she was very close, were involved in political and military matters
and she was informed by them any major events that had taken place in the world. It was her own
choice to write about social issues and possibly may have chosen to write in this style as she could
have personally experienced the events that she based the novel on, showing authenticity.
Why is this novel still popular today? Jane Austen's

Essay On Martin Luther King, Jr.

  • 1. Essay on Martin Luther King, Jr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born at home on Tuesday, January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. His parents were Martin Luther, Sr. and Alberta King. He was born into a world where segregation was the law. Where his boyhood best friend, who was white, wasn't allowed to play with him once they started school. Where black people went to separate bathrooms, drank from separate water fountains, couldn't eat in "white's only" restaurants, and had to give up their seats on buses if a white person wanted it. Martin was a very intelligent boy. He was able to enter Morehouse College at 15 simply on the strength of his scores on the college entrance exam taken during his junior ... On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested for not giving up her seat on the bus to a white man. The Montgomery Improvement Association (with King as their president) organized the boycott on the bus company that lasted 381 days and lost them 65% of their profits. In 1957, Martin helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and was its first president. Martin was arrested 30 times and spent time in jail (where he wrote "Letter From Birmingham Jail"), had his house bombed, was arrested once for driving 30 in a 25 mph zone (haven't we all done this at one time or another??), was stabbed, and finally, was assasinated. In 1964, because of his work in the Civil Rights Movement, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for being someone "who had contributed the most to the furtherance of peace among men". In 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voters Rights Bill into law. This law guaranteed that "No person in the United States shall, on the ground of race, colour, or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination". Pragmatics is associated with the study of meaning as communicated by a speaker and interpreted by a listener. This type of study necessarily involves the interpretation of what people mean in a particular context and how the context influences what is said. It requires a consideration of how the speakers organize what they want to say and under what circumstances. It also focuses on the social, political and ethical aspects of ... Biography of Edgar Allan Poe Essay Biography of Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe was born at 33 Hollis Street, Boston, Mass., on January 19, 1809, the son of poverty stricken actors, David, and Elizabeth (born Arnold) Poe. His parents were then filling an engagement in a Boston theatre, and the appearances of both, together with their sojourns in various places during their wandering careers, are to be plainly traced in the play bills of the time. Paternal Ancestry The father of the poet was one David Poe of Baltimore, Maryland, who had left the study of the law in that city to take up a stage career contrary to the desire of his family. David and Elizabeth Poe (Sr.) had seven children David, the eldest son, becoming the father of the poet. Two sisters of David, Eliza Poe (afterward Mrs. Henry Herring) and Maria Poe (later Mrs. William Clemm) enter into the story of the poet's life, the latter particularly, as she became his mother–in–law in addition to being his aunt. With her he lived from 1835 to 1849. Young David Poe was destined for the law, but as previously mentioned, he finally left his native city to go on the stage. His first professional appearance took place at Charleston, S. C., in December, 1803. A dramatic notice of this performance in a local paper describes David Poe as being extremely diffident while– ". . .His voice seems to be clear, melodious and variable; what its compass may be can only be shown when he acts unrestrained by timidity. His enunciation seemed to be very distinct and articulate; and his face and person are much in his favor. His size is of that pitch well fitted for general action if his talents should be suited to sock and buskin. . . ." This is perhaps the only direct evidence extant of the physical appearance of the poet's father. No pictures of him are known to exist. His histrionic powers were at best very ... The emerging evidence (e.g. McKinley, et.al, 1995) questions the bottom–line wisdom of downsizing. Many studies point to the negative consequences of downsizing in terms of morale, commitment and the enduring work of the "survivors." This analysis discusses ineffective employees and effective leadership qualities so that managers and employees can examine and improve their skills. The conforming, loyal "organizational man and woman" of the 50 's and 60 's (Whyte, 1956) has given way to the authorized, risk–taking "enterprising" employee of the 1990 's. By freeing people of the bureaucratic encumbrances and "empowering" them to take action, New Order organizations aim to promote success through more sophisticated collaboration, through teams whose members represent and integrate different specialties, and through the heightened interpersonal competence which arises as people fill their roles more passionately (Drucker, 1994). A significant shift is taking place in organizations throughout the world–a shift that has important implications for the skills that will be critical to your success both as a member of organizations and as a manager and leader. Sir Robert Peel tried hard to include all issues of the time in his principles, but he never could have predicted the modern day issues of gangs, cartels and all of the other violence that has come about since his time. Law enforcement has had to change a lot over the years to accommodate all of the problems they must deal with that Peel could not have predicted. To begin with, George Bernard Shaw was an early and outspoken advocate for the rights of women, and as a playwright he created some of the most distinctive women characters of his day. He was deeply influenced in this aspect of his writing by Henrik Ibsen. This play deals with a lot many themes. To cite a few: Rewriting the tale of Cinderella and Sleeping beauty, Class, language and phonetics and Independence. Women, how much ever is qualified, is better than the opposite gender when it comes to education, the opposite sex will always take her as a house maid or a person working under him. Eliza, in the climax scene vulnerably asks Higgins, why he made her a sophisticated Duchess if her never cared for her, and why did not he thought of the trouble it would make for her, on which Higgins shocking reply says: "Would the world ever have been made if its makes had been afraid of making trouble?" (Act V, 127) Making life means making troubles. He still finds faults with Eliza,' you are an idiot I waste the treasures of my Miltonic mind by spreading them before you." Higgins thus suffers from intellectual snobbery. He belongs to the world of Shakespeare and Milton. All throughout the play, Higgins behave rude with Eliza. From Dr Van Helsing in Bram Stoker's Dracula, who leads the young heroes into their quest to annihilate the Count, to Rupert Giles, the Watcher in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, older and more experienced adults have provided essential guidance for the younger protagonists of the genre. The differences in media of expression and the subsequent adaptations from novel to television series has not affected the presence of this character, more than a hundred years after the publication of Dracula in 1897. Giles indeed appears as, to quote Xander in 'Never kill a boy on the first date' (1:5), 'super librarian'. Defined through his knowledge of books and his appetite for them, his strength is also typically his weakness, as his predicament in 'Nightmares' (1:10) shows. His anguished though characteristically understated call, 'I'm having a problem. I – I can't read', points to his Achilles' heel. In the first three series of the show taking place in Sunnydale High, Giles's lair is the library. After Buffy enrols in university, Giles's bachelor flat becomes the de–facto library of the Scooby Gang. His bookishness defines him and gives him his role among the cast of protagonists. In 'Primeval' (4.21), Giles's contribution to the group's attack against Adam is his intelligence, 'Sophus', his mind. Giles is the brain of the group, Buffy the hand that strikes. Similarly, Van Helsing in Dracula intervenes in the novel when the young characters need someone with access to occult lore to explain Lucy's ailment. His knowledge defines him too: Jack Seward refers to him for the first time as 'Professor Van Helsing, of Amsterdam, who knows as much about obscure diseases as anyone in the world' (Dracula, 111), and alter as 'Van Helsing, the great specialist' (Dracula, 117). ... • 82. Robert Louis Stevenson Today Is Best Remembered As A Writer Robert Louis Stevenson today is best remembered as a writer of the Victorian Gothic and in particular for his novella, Jekyll and Hyde (1893). In this work, Utterson, a lawyer, discovers the horrible secrets his friend, Dr. Jekyll, has been hiding from him and the consequences that result. Straying away from mainstream science, Jekyll pursues his own catastrophic interests in order to separate the two sides of his morality and thusly creates his brutish double, Hyde. This text introduces the idea of human duality and brings forth the question of morality. However, duality, although important, is only one aspect of this novella, and there are other points of intrigue. An example of this intrigue is the role of women or rather the lack of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a result, Jekyll has no understandable justification to explain his experimentation, and his character can come across as irrational. Next, Campbell argues that, in order to focus on how the patriarchy operates and fails within the context of the novella, women were eliminated. As previously stated, this text revolves around a male–centric plot in which women do not play a role. Essentially, this story is about "communities of men", focusing on their interactions and experiences in the London city as they attempt to uncover the secret of Hyde (Hampson 109). In theory, women could potentially distract from the story that Stevenson wanted to tell, and he consequently removed women from any important role (Eberle–Sinatra and Beauvais 151). Moving on, Stevenson himself even claimed to have difficulties bringing characters to life, in particular women, and this problem extends to some of his other works where women, and love as well, play a small role in comparison to the importance of the male characters (Linehan 34). While expressing disdain with male vanity and also with men's typical perceptions of women, Stevenson also conveyed fascination with the idea of how men underestimate women. By excluding women from his story, Stevenson may have cleverly demonstrated this underestimation, using both himself, as the writer, and the male characters in Jekyll and Hyde to explain this phenomenon. Nursing is the largest health care occupation. Nursing is also one of the fastest growing occupations in the United States. Only three out of five nurses work in hospitals. By examining the levels of education needed, job responsibilities, salary and job outlook, a career in nursing would be highly suitable as a career path. Nursing dates back to the 1850s. The employment outlook for nurses is expected to grow each year. Potential nurses go through a difficult time during their studies. However, the reward of a nursing degree outweighs the stress to achieve the degree. Regardless, of where a nurse might choose to work, RN's functions, for the most part are similar. They are the first medical personnel a patient has contact with. Their duties might include, evaluate patients by recording patients' medical history and symptoms, take vitals, observe and record the condition of patients, administer medication under the direction of a physician, help to perform diagnostic tests and analyze results, and treat and teach patients and their families how to manage illnesses or injuries (Gale Student, Registered Nurse). A nurse will even call patients upon request or call to see how a patient is recouping. RN's can also work as nurse educators or as researchers in hospitals. The revised Code of Ethics (1996) of the National Association of Social Workers proclaims the pursuit of social justice one of the profession 's core values and establishes as an ethical imperative, "Social workers challenge social injustice" (NASW, 1996, p. 5). At first glance, these statements give the appearance of a trade which has retained its professional identity regardless of the opposition demonstrated by the current trends in social, political, and economic policy; however, upon closer inspection these phrases seem archaic, even patronizing as they assume that social workers work for rather than with people. Then what do these statements really signify? For nearly four decades, pundits have consistently proclaimed the bankruptcy of socialist ideas, the fascist evils lurking in communism, the triumph of the free market and liberal democracy... the so–called end of history (Fukuyama, 1992). Proposals to privatize Social Security, the cornerstone of what 's left of the U.S. welfare state, have gained credibility and popularity, even a sense of inevitability. Three individuals improved how medicine is practiced and the precautions to take. Hippocrates once said, "It's far more important to know the person the disease has than what disease the person has." The three pioneers of the medical field Florence Nightingale, Joseph Lister, and Edward Jenner changed the way medicine is practiced today. Firstly, Florence Nightingale was born in Florence, Italy on the 12th of May in 1820. She had a very wealthy family. When Florence was sixteen years old on February 7, 1837, she heard the voice of God calling her to carry out some special work. As she had the want to help people, she was lead to believe that God wanted her to be a nurse. Being a nurse was unusual for the upper class because nurses were known to come from poor families. The want of becoming a nurse never went away so she went to Kaiserwerth to nurse training (James). In addition, Florence actually lead a team of 38 nurses to staff an overseas hospital of the British army during the Crimean War. It was reported that there were unsanitary conditions that got the public concerned, so the secretary requested for a team of nurses to provide help. When Florence and her team arrived, conditions were extremely worse than reported. The wards were covered in sewage and patients were scattered everywhere. Now Justice returns, returns the Golden Age; a new generation now descends from on high." – Virgil, Eclogues 1.5 As Virgil stated so many years ago, history is a cyclical phenomenon. The experiences of one age tend to be repeated in future generations. Knowing that, we should not be surprised to find the seeds of modern styles and philosophies sprouting in earlier ages. As Alexander Leggatt points out, this play is divided into four different groups of characters; the lovers, the older Athenian citizens, the fairies and the "rude mechanics."# Each of these groups proceeds through the play as a separate plane or playing field that intersects the other fields in proscribed and largely ceremonial ways. The interaction of the different groups helps to define each group and at the same time keeps them separate. Essay Analysis of Great Expectations by Charles Dickens Analysis of Great Expectations by Charles Dickens Charles Dickens, the revolutionary 19th century novelist, wrote a bildungsroman of Phillip Pirrip (Pip) and the reality of his own "Great Expectations" in his pursuit to become a gentleman. In Chapter 8, the reader is introduced to Miss Havisham and Estella and this is where Pip first becomes dissatisfied with the life at the forge. There were many writers in Dickens' day whose works are no longer read; this is possibly because Dickens did something idiosyncratically different from his contemporaries. The plot of Great Expectations is quite complex, yet it is the way that Dickens handles the various elements of the plot that makes the novel appealing. For instance, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By introducing this character, the questions of why she is withdrawn and how this is related to the subplot concerning the convicts are left unanswered. It is not until during Chapters 40–42 that the reader finds out about Miss Havisham's connection with the convicts. Dickens is deliberately vague about Miss Havisham's past. This allows him later to introduce the idea that she might be Pip's benefactor. From the first point of contact Dickens is creating twists and turns later in the novel. The eccentricity and eeriness of Miss Havisham fascinates the reader, as she is one of fiction's "strangest"(Ch. 8 p. 46) women. Questions are posed in this chapter about the connection between her and Estella and why is she wearing "bridal dress" (Ch. 8 p. 50). The reader may assume several reasons but their innate inquisitiveness helps propel the novel forward. This device is used because of the structure of the novel. It was originally printed in weekly instalments. This means that Great Expectations does not have the structure of a conventional novel. Instead of moving towards a general climax, the story has many mini–resolutions of the plot. Each new episode needed a cliffhanger–type ending in order to ensure that the public would buy the next instalment. This has often been seen as a weakness of Charles Dickens' novels as the story can become repetitive. An advantage of this is that the original reader, if having missed an issue, can have a ... Jane Austen 's Pride And Prejudice The book Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen is a book that mainly focuses on the romantic dramas of a small society of rich people in and around the town of Hertfordshire. In her book, Jane Austen portrays some of the common characteristics of people as they try to find a mate. She uniquely illustrates the romantic dramas people encounter in everyday life. Although Pride and Prejudice certainly pertained to the living style of the 1800's, its concepts, and analysis of human nature still apply today. Austen shows the psychology of romantic dramas that are common in human nature, as she conveys these concepts throughout Pride and Prejudice. We get a better understanding of ourselves as we watch the different characters interact as their relationships unfold. In a town called Hertfordshire near London, the Bennets; Mr. and Mrs. Bennet, and their five daughters, are surrounded by a few neighbors all within their limited rich society. And because they live as the minority of rich people in society, naturally the marriage choices are limited which sometimes leads to dramas concerning marriage and its romantic indications. This story, Pride and Prejudice, is a story of the romantic dramas that ensue from these interactions. While the quest to obtain eros drives the plotlines of both Pride and Prejudice and Much Ado About Nothing, ultimately it is the power of philia that allows the characters to obtain romantic love. In this paper, I will compare the power of eros and philia in Pride and Prejudice and Much Ado About Nothing, and demonstrate that philia is the most powerful love. Philia is not only powerful because it has the ability to influence the creation or destruction of eros, but also because the characters in the texts place a greater value upon this love. In Pride and Prejudice, the novel begins upon this premise: "it is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife" (Austen 1). Austen's use of the words universal and truth are significant, as it indicates her satirical view of this societal belief. Through her use of satire, Austen implies, while her novel centers upon the development of eros, it is not necessarily the most important of loves. Austen ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This understanding of the nature of eros and philia leads many to agree that in true love, there is an element of friendship. This is particularly notable in the case of Portia, due to her assumption of traditionally masculine traits over the course of the text, and the exchange of rings ultimately allows her to reclaim her own autonomy. In giving Bassanio her ring, Portia assumes the traditionally masculine role, both in giving the ring and in giving herself, a role usually belonging to the father of the bride: ...But now, I was the lord Of this fair mansion, master of my servants, Queen o'er myself;... (3.2.167–9) By referring to herself as the 'lord' and 'master' of the house rather than the 'lady' and 'mistress', Portia makes it clear that she has been in charge of and running the estate since her father's death, rather than the more traditional female role of managing only the household. Interestingly, she then uses the feminine "queen" rather than king, which on the surface might seem to undermine this, however, a female Monarch maintains their power upon marriage, rather than having to surrender it to her husband, and holds power in her own right. Further, like Portia, some queens gave, rather than received rings: Mary, Queen of Scots, sent Thomas Howard, the Duke of Norfolk, a ring to indicate her willingness to marry him, and Queen Elizabeth gave the Earl of Essex a ring as a token of affection. Unlike a queen, Portia yields her power to Bassanio along with her hand:

  • 154. The Death Of Sir Richard Steele The best remembered periodical essayist, dramatist, and a politician was a man named Sir Richard Steele. His birth date is not known but it is known that he was baptized on March 12, 1676 on Dublin, Ireland. Richard Steele's father was also named Richard Steele; he was an attorney and his mother's name was Elinor Sheyles; her occupation was not said. Unfortunately, after his parents passed away in 1676. Steele was placed under the guardianship of his uncle, Henry Gascoigne, which was secretary of to the Duke of Ormonde. One of his challenges he faced was that he only had one stage failure in 1703, which was The Lying Lover, that had only ran for six nights. As Steele said "damned for its piety." (Mutter) Another challenged he faced was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ten editions were sold in his lifetime. Steele was accused of hypocrisy and mocked for the differences between his attitude precepts and genial convivial practice. In Steele's plays the moralistic tract would be echoed. Later that same year, Steele wrote his first comedy The Funeral or Grief A–la–mode. It was successfully performed at Drury Lane. This play made his reputation look good and was noticed by King William and the Whig leaders. Late in 1703, his second comedy, The Lying Lover was the only stage failure Steele had. It only had six runs. In 1705, Joseph Addison helped Steele with his third comedy called The Tender Husband. It was also a success, might have been because Addison put in his part by helping Steele. On August 12, 1709, Steele had released his paper called The Tatler, to be published thrice–weekly. It continued with Addison's help. The Tatler issues were authored by Steele. Addison writing about 46 on his own and working with Steele he had about 36 done. The Tatler unfortunately discontinued on January 2, 1711. The reason for this is uncertain but mainly because of political reasons. Under the name of Isaac Bickerstaff, Richard Steele made a mixture of entertainment and instruction in a manner of morals that was going to be perfected in The Spectator. Richard Steele wrote this "The general purpose of the whole has been to recommend truth, innocence, honor, and virtue, as the chief of ornaments of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 158. A Streetcar Named Desire: the Importance of Being Earnest The Importance of being earnest Themes Themes are the fundamental and often universal ideas explored in a literary work. The Nature of Marriage Marriage is of paramount importance in The Importance of Being Earnest, both as a primary force motivating the plot and as a subject for philosophical speculation and debate. The question of the nature of marriage appears for the first time in the opening dialogue between Algernon and his butler, Lane, and from this point on the subject never disappears for very long. Algernon and Jack discuss the nature of marriage when they dispute briefly about whether a marriage proposal is a matter of "business" or "pleasure," and Lady Bracknell touches on the issue when she states, "An engagement should ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In some ways, Algernon, not Jack, is the play's real hero. Not only is Algernon like Wilde in his dandified, exquisite wit, tastes, and priorities, but he also resembles Wilde to the extent that his fictions and inventions resemble those of an artist. The Importance of Not Being "Earnest" Earnestness, which implies seriousness or sincerity, is the great enemy of morality in The Importance of Being Earnest. Earnestness can take many forms, including boringness, solemnity, pomposity, complacency, smugness, self–righteousness, and sense of duty, all of which Wilde saw as hallmarks of the Victorian character. When characters in the play use the word serious, they tend to mean "trivial," and vice versa. For example, Algernon thinks it "shallow" for people not to be "serious" about meals, and Gwendolen believes, "In matters of grave importance, style, not sincerity is the vital thing." For Wilde, the word earnest comprised two different but related ideas: the notion of false truth and the notion of false morality, or moralism. The moralism of Victorian society–its smugness and pomposity–impels Algernon and Jack to invent fictitious alter egos so as to be able to escape the strictures of propriety and decency. However, what one member of society considers decent or indecent doesn't always reflect what decency really is. One of the play's paradoxes is the impossibility of actually being either earnest (meaning "serious" or "sincere") or moral while claiming to be so. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 162. Pride and Prejudice Essay Pride and Prejudice The novel Pride and Prejudice written by Jane Austen was originally to be called First Impressions. Hence the ultimate aim of this essay is to identify how successful this novel is in giving 'First Impressions' of the characters. The focus of this essay is on the opening chapters of the novel as this is where we are first introduced to the characters. 'It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.' This is one of Austen's famous quotes and sums up the main theme of the novel; that in the time this novel was written all men with a good wage are eligible bachelors in finding a woman to marry. I would consider this idea to be put under ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Due to Lydia's wrong doings the Bennett's have descended in the hierarchy. The only way the Bennett sisters can redeem their reputation, status in society and moreover be able to get married to someone in their own class is if Lydia Bennett marries Mr. Wickham. Today such a situation wouldn't be frowned upon; however in Austen's day there would be harsh consequences. Ultimately, this indicates the difference in social historical background. Jane Austen began writing the novel during the turn of the century in 1796, as she was writing the novel she wished to call it First Impressions. However, after much re–drafting the novel was published under the title Pride and Prejudice in 1813. Jane Austen was born in Steventon, Hampshire on 10th December 1775. She was the daughter of a clergyman and one of 8 children. Many thought that Jane wrote her novels on the basis of her social knowledge as this is all she knew about and believed she was unaware of major world events. Strictly speaking this is incorrect. Her brothers, to whom she was very close, were involved in political and military matters and she was informed by them any major events that had taken place in the world. It was her own choice to write about social issues and possibly may have chosen to write in this style as she could have personally experienced the events that she based the novel on, showing authenticity. Why is this novel still popular today? Jane Austen's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
