I have chosen to analyse the prejudicial treatment and discrimination of different
categories of people, especially on the grounds of race, class and most definitely
gender. These themes are prominent in my chosen texts, the short story The Doll s
House by Katherine Mansfield, the documentary Born into Brothels by Zana Briski,
the novel Sold by Patricia Mccormick and the film Gran Torino by Clint Eastwood. I
have chosen all these texts because I ve had a sufficient understanding about the
different yet very similar forms of discrimination. After analysing these texts my
perspective has changed as I have realised how easily people can judge and
discriminate other people causing the prejudicial treatment upon others, which is
definitely portrayed throughout.
The short story the Doll s House by Katherine Mansfield represents discrimination
through the cruelty of class distinctions. The main line that represents this text is
The kelveys were shunned by everyone What Mansfield means by this is the
Kelveys were shunned because they were lower class, Katherine has related this
story back to her own experiences. Mansfield was born in New Zealand when the
country was still a british colony in which class distinctions were rigidly maintained.
Katherine shows the discrimination through the Burnells upper class kids who own
the dollhouse and the Kelveys girls who are from a lower class compared to the rest
