UNESCO Fullbright Fellowship
I am completing my Fulbright Grant year as an English Teaching Assistant in South Korea. In this
role, I teach conversational English to students and hold teachers workshops at Gwangyang High
School, an all boy s school. Upon my arrival, I was quickly able to adjust to the school
environment, feeling integrated with the other teachers and comfortable with the students. I
applied specifically to Fulbright Koreabecause I wanted to gain greater insight into the country s
recent economic success and add diversity to my international experiences by immersing myself in
an Asian culture with which I was not yet familiar.
I teach 16 classes a week. Each of these classes contains 32 to 40 students, which allows me to

Along with English enhancement, the other main focus of these workshops is cultural exchange
and as a result of our discussions, the other teachers and I have gained a nuanced understanding of
each other s backgrounds.
Outside the classroom, I have also engaged with and been able to help my students and fellow
teachers in a variety of ways. Through daily one on one sessions in the fall, I helped prepare three
students for an English speech contest. I have also counseled several students who were applying to
colleges abroad. One of my favorite ways to interact with students is during our lunch break when
we play baseball together. I am conscious of the fact that increasing the time that I spend with my
students strengthens not only their English skills but also our intercultural dialogue.
When away from my work at Gwangyang High School, I have filled my time with activities that
have enhanced my knowledge of Korea, while also fully embracing the mission of cultural
exchange and scholarship espoused by the Fulbright program. Early in my time here I became
interested in the differences in cultural activities, food, and ideologies between provinces. These
differences intrigued me because of the small size of the country and the current ease of transport.
This initial observation led me to the research

Tactics Of Fear
The Tactics of Fear
Roland Emmerich s A Day After Tomorrow (2004) emphasizes the impact of climate change on
the world after an abrupt catastrophic climate event, triggered by human induced climate change
takes place. The movie begins by showing the collapse of the Larsen B Ice Shelf, which causes a
global warming induced shutdown of the North Atlantic thermohaline circulation system
(Leiserowitz). The shutdown of the North Atlantic thermocline, triggers extreme weather events
worldwide and subsequently a new ice age, with wrenching global consequences (Leiserowitz).
The movie follows, Jack Hall a paleoclimatologist, as he travels across the country in the giant
storm to reach his son, and save him from the approaching ice age. As Jack ... Show more content

Emmerich achieves this by capturing each individual natural disaster at different camera angles
that emphasis the violence of each disaster and emphasizes terror of the characters. Emmerich
demonstrates the enormity of each natural disaster by switching between the perspective of the
scared citizens and the perspective of the natural disaster. Doing this simple perspective flip he
highlights the large difference between the disaster and the citizen. For example, in the Tornado
scene he uses an accumulation of these techniques to scare the audience. He beings with a low
angle shot of the Tornado depicting how large it is in comparison to the city and people. He then
switches to an aerial view following the Tornado as it rips through the city. After letting the
shocked audience watch the destruction from a faraway view he moves the camera back down
and makes it so that the camera is positioned like a character in the storm. Using this technique of
making it seem like the audience is in the natural disaster scene triggers a nervous system
response. As the audiences watches the scene as if they are a part of it they quickly accumulate
the fear the movie characters have for their own safety. After letting the audience soak this in for
a while he goes back to an aerial view where more tornados are now tearing apart the city.
Siobhan O Shea at student at University of California Santa Cruz, picked up on the fear she was
experiencing during this scene. For a while there I believe I was in actual danger... my heart rate
was pumping and I could feel myself getting ready to run. Once the scene change I realized I was
not a part of the movie nor in danger, but Emmerich definitely provokes an emotional response for
his audiences by using this camera angle position (O Shea).

is often something that is not done easily and it may be confusing to some people because of
your need to do things in reverse. For instance, if your rounds are hitting the high side of the

Rikki Tiki Theme Analysis
Rikki Tikki Tavi Theme is the thoughts, or an exhibition on a story or piece of writing. My
central idea for the theme of Rikki Tikki Tavi by Rydyard Kipling is blind loyalty. I am positive
that loyalty is one of the superlative themes of this story because throughout the story, both the
protagonist and antagonist show loyalty. Rikki Tikki, the protagonist, shows his loyalty to the
human family, his own family, and Darzee by protecting them from the immoral Naginia. Another
correct theme could be bravery. The story emphasized the courage of Rikki and contrasted that
with the cowardly behavior of Chuchundra the muskrat. Rikki reveals his loyalty to Darzee after
he acknowledges that Nag had eaten one of Darzee s children who had fallen

The Great Depression is the deepest and longest lasting economic downturn in the history of the
Western industrialized world, that had occurred until that day. In 1932, stocks were only worth
about 20 percent of their value than in the summer of 1929. The Stock Market Crash of 1929
was not the lone cause of the Great Depression, but it played a major impact in the collapse of
the economy. History.Com stated that by 1933, approximately half of the banks in America had
failed, unemployment had risen to 30% of the workforce. In my opinion, The Stock Market
Crash of 1929 occurred over a certain time length in the month of October. I agree with
economic analyst Jesse Colombo that on Black Tuesday the stock market had collapsed, and
caused chaos. The collapse caused chaos, leading to high rates of unemployment of closures of
many banks. The crash occurred because there was an excess of bank loans, low wages,
speculation, and because of buying on margin. I believe that the Stock Market Crash of 1929 was
one of the factors that lead to the Great Depression, which was the worst time in economic history

Theories Of Structuralism In Literature
Structuralism and its different approaches to literature Structuralism was developed in France in
1950 s as an approach of reading literary texts. Structuralism seeks to understand that no element
can be understood separately. It attempts to understand a work of art in the context of the larger
structures they are part of. Structuralism is a way of thinking and activities which is chiefly
concerned with the perceptions and descriptions of structures. In this regard, Terence Hawkes says:
The full significance of any entity cannot be perceived unless and until it is integrated into the
surface of which it forms a part.1
One can derive from Terence Hawkes view that structuralism would refer to a system or body of
principles which is derived from the belief that any phenomenon is a structure made up of ... Show

Griemas work Structural Semantic (1966) is an important work of structuralist narratology. He
develops structural semantics based on Saussaure s notion of binary opposition which he has called
structural semiotics. For Griemas there always exists opposition to generate meaning. He declares
that there are various sematic units that work in opposition. He called these as seme. And meaning
comes out in the opposition between semes, for example, old/young; black/white; boy/girl etc.
These semes function as actants (structural unit, neither a character nor a specific narrative event)
to produce narrative. Griemas semes are based on Saussurean notion that form the basic formula,
the rules and the underlying structure of language (langue). The semes express themselves as
narrative and plots and stories in contexts (parole). Thus the semes in different combinations are
stated in particular contexts to generate stories in particular contexts. In literary theory, the basic
structure of the production of meaning through binary opposition is called signification. We often
find the dual opposition or semes in a text or any piece of

The Impact Of Employee Motivation On Organizational...
Employee Motivation Motivation of employees plays a crucial factor in determining their
performance with regard to productivity and engagement in their respective duties. Actually,
employees who are adequately motivated tend to enhance their performance, be more productive,
feel more satisfied, and be more engaged in their work. Managers should take responsibility to
enhance their employees in order to enhance their contributions to the organization or company
resulting in increased productivity. The significance of employee motivationto organizational
productivity is linked to the widely accepted belief that motivation is the basic driver of human
behavior. The significance of motivation in driving human behavior has contributed to the
development of various theories of motivation, which are mostly applied in real life organizations
or businesses. The application of these theories has considerable effects on organizational
productivity, employee turnover, and employee satisfaction.
The Concept of Employee Motivation Motivation can be described as a psychological process
that influences individuals choices about work related behaviors. While managers tend to consider
employee motivation as the desire to work, this concept refers to a general procedure that has
considerable effects on nearly all behaviors. This is primarily because the concept of employee
motivation is based on the principle that the resultant behavior is carried out in order to generate

The American Dream In Ta-Nehisi Coates s Between The World...
In the United States of America, there are two primary beliefs that inform and support class
ideology: the American Dream and the belief that the U.S is a meritocracy. The two themes, the
American Dream and meritocracy, are used to understand inequalities and construct social worlds.
The American Dream is the U.S. s national ethos, when people think of this nation, they think the
land of opportunity. It is a uniquely American belief that does not acknowledge the role of life
chances and patterns of social barriers. Connected to the American Dream is a meritocracy, which
supports that success is linked to hard work and failure is caused by low determination and
laziness. The author of Between the World and Me, Ta Nehisi Coates, presents on the idea of the
American Dream not being truly all American in his letter to his son, Samori. Throughout the letter,
Coates emphasized the concept that the American Dream is a white Dream, not attainable by the
black people; police brutality against black people is a reflection of the will of this white American
Dream.
Before addressing Coates truth about the American Dream, the idea of race needs to be discussed in
relation to the American Dream. Coates proclaims that Americans believe in the reality of race as a
defined, indubitable feature of the natural world. Racism the need to ascribe bone deep features to
people and then humiliate, reduce, and destroy them (7). This thought perfectly defines how the

Registered nurses must be licensed in the state in which they work. Nurses may be licensed in
more than one state either by taking another NCLEX examination or by endorsement of a
license issued by another state (Field 53). Experience needed for success in the nursing field is
acquired in the clinical experience obtained in nursing school. Volunteering in a hospital is
encouraged before pursuing a nursing career to ensure that nursing is the field in which you want
to become a member. Career fairs are often held in high schools, vocational schools, colleges, and
hospitals so interested students can explore the career options in nursing (Farr, and Shatkin 329).
Approved education and clinical experience is required by employers because several abilities are
required to be a successful registered nurse. An individual working in the nursing field must learn
special medical skills, understand pharmaceutical language and information, and be able to
communicate with patients and coworkers. Ill patients are often frightened by their sickness. The
most important personality traits of a good registered nurse are compassion, sympathy, empathy,
and caring. Good communication skills and the ability to follow orders exactly are necessary as is
the ability to work with ill and infirm people (Fogg, Harrington, and Harrington). A desire to help
others is needed to be a successful worker in the healthcare department. Patients

What Are The Benefits Of Obamacare
Former President Obama once said to the American people, Let s keep working to rebuild the
middle class... Let s build more ladders of opportunity for everybody willing to work hard. Let s
make sure the United States of America keeps being a place where you can make it if you try.
When saying these words, Obama had a vision for the act of Obamacare: to help the American
people and give them something to hold onto, a light at the end of a tunnel, a promise for financial
stability. Obamacare, or the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is the answer, a health care reform law for

Consumers looking for insurance are benefited as they have lower costs than they would without
Obamacare. According to the ACA analysis, silver plans cover seventeen percent more health
expenses than the average plan prior to the ACA (Zamosky). The Affordable Care Act has made
a change in the costs and expenses regarding money put into health. Without Obamacare, clearly,
the plans and various forms of insurance would be costly. To add on, Obamacare provides tax
credits for those who have low income and shop through the health insurance marketplace. These
people receive a tax credit [they] can take in advance to lower [their] monthly health insurance
payment (Advance Premium Tax Credit). The tax credit gives these people enough to get by,

A smile from aural orifice to aural orifice, curling and bright. It s a strange thing to write a letter
that will probably never be read, or will be read by others. An openness in something generally
private, no less strange or cumbersome than writing a letter to someone you don t know but
think you might like to though. How best to form and shape those ideas, herd them into some
form of coherency and clarity? To start you already have a letter from me, with an iPod in it.
Black envelope, gold lettering, gave it to you at the PA Wizard World. This is take two of things

Characteristics of a Classical Hero Demonstrated in The...
The Labours of Hercules introduces the most famous Greek hero in mythology, Hercules. He
completes twelve immense tasks at an early age for killing his family while under a curse from
Hera. The story of his labours contains many reasons why Hercules is classified as a classical hero.
Hercules exhibits many of the traits of a classical hero, including numerous guides, hazardous
journeys and several hardships and afflictions.
Hercules demonstrates one trait of a classical hero by asking for or accepting assistance from
other characters throughout the story. Two of his most obvious moments of assistance were when
he asks the King of Thebes for his twelve tasks and when he needs help during the search for one of
Hera s treasures. He ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hercules demonstrates a second characteristic when he embarks on his twelve incredibly
dangerous labours. By completing these tasks, Hercules would be forgiven for the killing of his
family while under Hera s spell. An instance of one of these tasks is when he must destroy Hydra,
a creature with many heads, one of which is immortal. He fulfills this task by cutting off most of
its heads and then laying its immortal head under a rock for eternity. On another labour Hercules is
sent to retrieve Cerberus (the three headed dog of Hades) and bring him to the King then, return it
to the post at the entrance to the underworld. These and many other of Hercules immense tasks
therefore display a vital quality of a hero in classical mythology.
A third trait of a classical hero is demonstrated when Hercules experiences many afflictions and
misfortunes during his journeys. Ever since Hera s husband Zeus had an affair and gave life to
Hercules, she has hated him and is responsible for most of his afflictions. One of these afflictions
is when Hera drove Hercules mad and made him kill his wife and family. Another example of his
misfortunes is when Hera sent two very dangerous snakes after him when he was only eight months
old; luckily Hercules was incredibly strong and defeated the deadly snakes. The tremendous amount
of hardships along his quest therefore reflects a third heroic quality in Hercules.
Many characteristics of a classical hero are demonstrated by Hercules in

Why Is Swing Better Than Traditional Jazz
A few years later that jazz was born in 1930 another style was created and it is call swing. Also
called the big band era because they used more instruments than early jazz. Why swing was the
most popular style of jazz? The reason was because it gave people that swing feeling they wanted
the one that made people dance. Is swing better than traditional jazz? It may be popular but that does
not mean that one is better than the other it was just different in a way that attract to many people
and it is hard to describe what swing feeling really means. The instrumentation used in swing music
consisted in five saxophones, four trumpets and four trombones as the front line and the rhythm
section with the guitar, bass, piano and drums. This instrumentation gave a strong and hot style that
people were crazy about. Always keeping the essence of jazz improvising and keeping the swing
feeling although in swing there were not collective improvisations. Using more instruments allowed
musicians to have an advanced ability in terms of tone, control and speed while they are playing a
melody. Because big bands in the swing era could not do collective improvisations bands started to
use more arrangements and the improvisation was only with solos. Duke Ellington was one of the

To begin with, if Oedipus and Frogs are to be taken into consideration and the aspects of the plot
dissected using the guidelines provided in Poetics, then based on Aristotle s definition of plot as
organization of events, it can be stated that the structure of plot is the same for the two stories of
opposing genres, for both have a beginning, a middle and an end one following after the other
resulting in a well constructed plot not beginning or ending at any arbitrary point (Aristotle 10 13

tragedies, in most comedies the character experiences a fall from bad fortune to good fortune
(Aristotle 21 22). Thus, in regards to Oedipusit can be noted that the story follows the general plot
structure with Oedipus first facing good fortune briefly in the beginning of the play, as alluded to
by the Elder who states that Oedipus came to Thebes, saved us from the Sphinx,/ And without any

Evil Characters In William Golding s Lord Of The Flies
SiddhДЃrtha Gautama, a man who founded the basis for a religion with 500 million faithful
followers, postulated that It is a man s own mind, not his enemy or foe, that lures him to evil
ways. Gautama describes that one s flawed decisions are not influenced by his enemies, and one
s final decision is his to make alone, not to be affected by others. This is illustrated by the actions
of the main figures in Lord of the Flies. The characters in the novel are British schoolboys under
the age of twelve, yet on multiple accounts it is demonstrated how violent the youngsters can be.
The narrative is an ongoing struggle between the juveniles and their own thoughts, which they
refer to as the Beast. They refuse to accept that the Beast is in their minds, so they portray it as a
monster which lurks during nighttime. The boys whose minds develop negatively create a
civilization where brutality is emboldened, while the few that resist the temptation to become
hateful are loathed and killed by the others. In Lord of the Flies by William Goldingthe literary
element characterization depicts how loneliness can adversely affect the sanity and mindof an
individual.
When one is separated from societal order, their darker thoughts will then begin to bloom and
their behavior will become more aggressive. Near the beginning of the novel, Roger is described
as a boy who ...kept to himself within an inner intensity of avoidance and secrecy (Golding 16).

The Arrival Of Islam And Islam
The arrival of Islam brought many changes to Arabian life and society as it then existed. One of
these changes was among the treatment of women and their place in society. Before the coming of
Islam in the 7th century, women were thought to be inferior servants to men. The arrival of Islam
throughout Arabia opened many opportunities for women that allowed them more rights and more
influence on the basis of equality.
The arrival of Islam is what was crucial for women to be seen as human beings. Women were
thought to have the same capabilities as men and seen to have the same chance as men at a
fulfilling religious life. Islam confirmed her capacity to carry out Allah s commands, her
responsibilities and observation of the commands that lead to heaven. Islam considered the woman
as a worthy human being, with a share in humanity equal to that of the man. Men and women also
possessed equality within the context of religious duties required by Islam. Both genders shared the
same responsibilities. The woman is also required to perform religious ordinances and forms of
worship the way the man is. Praying, fasting, Zakat (the alms sanctifying tax), pilgrimage and all
the other fundamental practices in Islam are required of Muslims in their capacity, both men and
women, as responsible humans. While women were given many responsibilities to carry out,
having equal humanity also gave them more rights than they had before.
One of the rights Islam gave to women was the right of

Mothers And Daughters Have Those Typical Mother Daughter...
Most mothers and daughters have those typical mother daughter talks. You can compare them to
a rite of passage that continues for a period of time. The goal is to gain a closer bond between the
two females. Every once in a while, a mother will sit down with her daughter and they will talk
about anything. The topics can range from boys to advice or just describing your day. A mother
isn t
supposed to be your best friend, that s not her role. She is a confidant or a great listener who
unconditionally loves you. My mother possesses those qualities; they just aren t usually put to use.
Each time we have our mother daughter talks they tend to be at the weirdest times: while driving
me to dance practice, while doing my hair, when I m trying to go to bed, etc. There is nothing
wrong with that. I know my mom is really busy. Between finishing work projects at home, cooking
dinner and raising five kids (I m including my father and our two dogs), this woman doesn t get a
moment to herself. So, our mother daughter talks turn out to be unconventional, at least compared
to television examples and what my friends talk about. I don t mind though. Our uniqueness makes
our talks much more memorable.
For example, our unforgettable first mother daughter talk. It was a late Tuesday night in
September. My six year old brother was already asleep, my dad was downstairs watching TV, and
my mother was doing my hair for my 7th grade picture day. As per usual, we waited until the night

The Breakup Of The Soviet Union
In 1992, the breakup of the Soviet Union, nationalist struggles in the Balkans, the creation of a
European community, the emergence of Japan as an economic giant from the 1970s into the 1990s,
and the presence of American culture on a global scale all focused attention on the construction and
continuity of national identities. Within Great Britain, the loss of empire and receding
Protestantism precipitated the re emergence of Englishness, Scottishness, and Welshness.
Historians of Britain began to ask what it meant to be British, on what foundations did a sense of
British national identity rest, and when should [British] history begin? Linda Colley posits answers
to these three questions in Britons: Forging the Nation 1707 1837. Britons came to define
themselves (sometimes) as a single people, not because of any political or cultural consensus at
home, but rather in reaction to the Other beyond their shores and Britishnesswas superimposed over
an array of internal differences in response to contact with the Other, and above all in response to
conflict with the Other. Thus, in Colley s formulation, Britain was an invention forged above all by
war with Catholic France. War against the Other was the mechanism for Britishness, but
Protestantism was the foundation that made the invention of Great Britain possible. British history
begins with the nation of Great Britain, which was invented in 1707 when the Parliament of
Westminster passed the Act of Union

Then, we need to forecast the value of the offer.
Berkshire s offer consisted of two inseparable parts, an asset agreement and a credit agreement.
Total value of the offer is $142 million.
Solution Decision
Strategy 1: Accept the Berkshire s offer.
From the part 2 calculated, we can see that the value of company is about $130.01 million, and
Berkshire s offer is about $142 million higher than the value of company. The offer s Credit
Agreement can cover the current debts of company, and its Asset Purchase part also provide $142
million cash which can make the company has a better operation and reduce the managers pressure.
So the managers of Media General can accept this offer.

College Essay On Becoming A Nurse
Becoming a Nurse is more than a job, it s an experience
To me, becoming a nurse is far more than just showing up to work daily. It s a lifestyle choice, a
continuous learning process that you engage in daily, a pursuit that s guided by passion and
integrity. A wonderful journey where you can make a direct impact in someone s life daily. From
educating patients about medication and treatment plans, to holding their hand at the end of life s
journey. Nursing truly defines what it means to be human.
I started my experience 2010, when I attended Hancock County Technical Center my senior year of
high school obtaining my CNA. I then started working at Narraguagus Health Care Facility the
summer after graduation taking care of long term care patients. I worked there for 3 years,
while attending Beal College to earn my Associates Degree in Medical Assisting. Once, I
graduated from the Medical Assisting program in 2013. I worked in home health taking care of a
patient, who was shut in for a little over a year. I got my current job at EMMC in the

The Sandwitch Factory
The Sandwich Factory
A) The short story The Sandwich Factory is written by Jason Kennedy and deals with a man s
experiences doing a low paid job at a sandwich factory. It tells the story of how the man needs to
be able to deal with a lot of things about himself and other people, to do the work and concentrate
about it. We get a very good insight into his situation, but it is very much marked by his personal
thoughts about it, and therefore it becomes more or less useless for us to relate to. It is very
obvious that this man doesn t like his job, and we even get the feeling that he doesn t like his life
either.
To begin with the story takes place in the sandwich factory, where he works. He introduces us to
some of the people he works ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The manager, however, seems to think that he knows how everybody thinks, as he believes that the
employees don t like to be shunted around. It is obvious that he hasn t tried it himself. The text
gives an insight into how the managers think, and it can therefore be connected with the narrator s
thoughts in the short story. Picture 2, a still from Modern Times by Charlie Chaplin is a very
interesting picture in this situation, as it represents society s thoughts about the huge mass
productions that suddenly overwhelmed the world. The film makes fun of the massive factory
production that not only made a lot of people unemployed, but also made the world go mad. It can
relate to the short story because of the way it uses irony to deal with a huge problem.
B) The statement: a figure of speech is an expression or comparison that relies not on its literal
meaning, but on its connotations and suggestions. is a very good way of describing figures of
speeches.
Dickens seems to be using it a lot, and the text is actually very much marked by figures of
speeches. As an example there is a comparison between the color of the town and the face of a
savage: [...] it was a town of unnatural red and black like the painted face of a savage. (ll. 2 3) and
as another example we have the comparison between the steam engine and an elephant: [...] the
piston of the steam engine worked monotonously up and down, like the head of an

International Market Analysis For A Growing Firm
Luigi Vittatoe Professor Stanley Klatka BUS1801 Global Business Perspectives October 5, 2015
International Business Paper Introduction For a growing firm, the international market represents
one of the avenues to achieve growth and expansion. The global market, through trade, has been an
engine of growth, for example, world trade has been growing at seven percent since 1945,
becoming a contributor to economic growth. The international market has facilitated global trade
and the integration of economies. Therefore, it has enabled countries to exploit its comparative
advantage. The following report looks at the international market entry strategies, reasons for
selecting the topic, new relevant materials learned facts about the topic and the unexpected facts
relating to it. Reasons for choosing the topic International market entry is important because it
enables an organization to increase its output and attract new customers. By expanding the
customer base and the scale of production, the business will be able to achieve economies of scale.
That is, the organization can be able to reduce the average cost per unit of production when the
level of output is substantially increased (Stephan and Roin 28). After international expansion, cost
advantages and higher profit be obtained through bulk purchasing, enjoying high turnover rate and
paying lower interest rates on loans. For the business firm to grow, it has to find new opportunities
of expansion. The opportunity for

38 Who Saw Hollander Analysis
Are there any acceptable reasons for letting someone die in front of your eyes? In the article The
Murder They Heard written by Stanley Milgram and Paul Hollander and first appearing in The
Nation, Milgram and Hollander explored the reasons for the neighbors failure to help, their lack
of civic sense and their actions toward Catherine Genovese s murder, in part, they are responding
to the hype created around Martin Gansberg s 38 Who Saw Murder Didn t Call the Police.
Milgram and Hollander argued that the witnesses were not at fault in that murder and instead, they
blamed the city life, society norms, law, and the situational pressure. Even though Milgram and

it was okay for them to not call the police for help. They presented some of the reasons like the

the witnesses. First of all, they talked about the personal relationships that are inferior in the
city. People in the city keep distance between themselves because they want to be free (902).
This was considered a big reason for the witnesses to not call the police or help her as they didn t

as an another explanation for the witnesses to not help Genovese. The witnesses were following the

Policy Making Analysis
The first three chapters of the Introduction to the Policy Process talks about how our society
makes policy and how different events in the country s history can have drastic effects on policy,
and how these different kinds of policy s can have an effect on the American people as well. In this
country policymaking has been there from the start after the signing of the Declaration of
Independence and our separation from Great Britain. The readings mention what policy is and its
purpose in our governmentand the population at large, why policy making is important to study, the
elements of the policy making system, the different environments that can affect policy, and the

One thing that the readings mentions that when we look at the policy making process, we should
look at the separation of powers. The separation of powers in our government, is the balance that
was put in place so that no branch has too much power, and that each branch can override a
decision, that one branch makes when it comes to policy. The three branches are the executive
branch, which deals with the president, the legislative branch which deals with the House of
Representatives and the Senate, and the Judicial Branch, which deals with the Supreme Court.
Each branch has a separate job to do, and can influence policy in different ways. For example, the
Supreme Court had overruled a policy that had said that schools could separate kids due to the
color of the skin. The Famous court case of Brown v. Board of Education changed this policy
and allowed kids to go to the same school, regardless of the color of their skin. Many people
across the country knew that the separate schools policy was wrong and the government did
nothing to change it for many years. The court case changed this and overruled a policy that had
been put in place many years ago and created a new policy in its

Still Life With Tornado Character Analysis
In the novel, Still Life With Tornado, by A.S. King, Sarah, a teenager who strives to be original,
manifests change throughout the story while portraying the theme, originality is inborn. Sarah
is a teenage girl who thinks she is unoriginal. She grows up with parents who hate each other and
only stay together for her and her brother s sake. As their marriage gradually falls apart, Sarah
has to go through the process with them and try to keep herself together. Sarah, the protagonist,
changes throughout the story, as demonstrated by bewilderment, tediousness, and acceptance. In
the beginning of the narrative, Sarah demonstrates characteristics of bewilderment. Sarah, a 16
year old high school dropout, is rethinking her life as she says, Maybe my whole life I ve been
living inside of an imaginary painting (King 54). Sarah is confused and feels that her childhood
was a lie. The readers realize along with her that her parents put on an act to protect her from the
fact that they do not get along. This communicates the sense of feeling trapped within lies
thought to be true and addresses the message to society that the root of the problem is always
bigger than what is expected. Similarly, Sarah asserts her latest assessment regarding herself
and her mental state saying, I am not going crazy. I do not need a psychologist. I decide I am an
artist inside of a tornado that will not let me go (King 128). Sarah decides she is in a mental
state where she cannot portray her feelings. She uses this excuse of being stuck in a tornado to
reject the fact that ultimately she will need to get her life back on track and accept who she is.
This is another one of Sarah s shenanigans to try to be original, and by doing this, she finds a
reason to avert from being a normal person. People today encounter the same situation in
everyday life by using excuses to get around inevitable things. Sarah s manifestation of change
continues in the middle of the story as well. As Sarah progresses, she shows traits of tediousness.
While reflecting on her feelings about herself, she says, I am an umbrella on a day with no rain
(King 9). An umbrella on a day with no rain has no use, therefore the author is trying to show how

How Did The Roman Games Affect The Ancient Olympic Games
The Ancient Olympic Games has made an impact both on the past and present time. The event
became well known to the public ever since its first event around 776 BC. The Greek games
determined and selected certain civilians who had exceptional endurance and athleticism within the
games. The event was an opportunity for the Greek civilization to enhance their athleticism and
sportsmanship without any risk of death or injury. Events like running, jumping, discus throw and
many others gave glory and wreath like crowns to those worthy contestants who proved to have
outstanding physical training. The purpose of the Ancient Olympics was secular in order to honor
the Greek god Zeus. However in Rome, the Romans also followed with their own event to honor
the Roman chief god, Jupiter Optimus Maximus. The Roman Games, called ludi, was quite
different from the Greek Olympic system. Ludi had three programs of spectacles for Roman
civilians: ludi circenses, venationes, and ludi scaenici. Ludi circenses were games being played
within a circus, most primarily chariot racingand gladiator fights (munera) were the main events
under the circus program. Venationes were games with an additional appearance from animals.
Animals played part in the Roman Games to be hunted as a complement to the gladiator games.
Ludi scaenici were not technically actual games compared to chariot racing and animal hunts, but a
leisure activity of watching theater. The purpose of Ludi was to not only honor Jupiter,

Examples Of A Paradigm According To Khn
What is a paradigm, according to Kuhn? (8 pts)
According to Kuhn, a paradigm is universally recognized scientific achievements (a theory of
science), which become a framework for scientific research and knowledge. It is a set of practices
that defines science for a particular period of time. This paradigm provides a scientific community a
model, within which it evolves. The paradigm defines what is to be observed and analyzed, what
kind of questions should be asked, how they should be structured, how the results of the experiment
should be interpreted, how the research should be conducted as well as equipment it should be
conducted with etc.
What is the difference, according to Kuhn, between normal and revolutionary science? (5 pts)
Kuhn argued that science undergoes periodic revolutions (so called ... Show more content on

New scientific discoveries follow as the new paradigm is adopted.
The groundwork of a new paradigm must already be in a place in order for new scientific
discoveries to be made. For example, Galileo was already thinking in terms of a new paradigm of
natural motions before he discovered the pendulum. His new concepts and theories enabled him to
see the phenomenon of the pendulum. Before this the pendulum wasn t seen or addressed within
the old paradigm
Why does Kuhn say that, before and after a scientific revolution, scientists live in different worlds ?
If Kuhn is correct in claiming this, why would a scientific community choose a new paradigm? (7)
Kuhn says that scientists live in different worlds when speaking of scientists living in different
paradigms because people essentially start thinking in a complete different way, when converting to
a new scientific paradigm. They stop thinking the old way and theories, which belonged to old
paradigms, become impossible to explain. Paradigms cannot be explained through one another,
since there is no

It s Not That Many People
It s not that many people... right? I asked myself. Even the idea of taking a group of 19 people of

We had tried this before in 2012 and a great time was had by all. I had particularly enjoyed that

it was probably because she had a Hercule Poirot moustache. We all giggled and teased each other

The next day order was restored, except for the giraffe and tiger spotted roaming the hills: it was

Symptoms And Treatment Of Patients
RESULTS
This study included 30 patients (21 females and 9 males, table 1) who received 45 TAP blocks.
The blocks were performed after patients failed medication management. Twenty five patients
reported one or more abdominal surgeries before the development of pain and attributed their
pain to surgery (Table 2). Eight blocks were performed on the left side, 12 on the right side, and
25 bilateral. One patient missed the follow up, 9 blocks were reported to be ineffective (3 patients
in this group were labelled opioid seekers), and 6 patients reported ongoing improvement. The
procedure improved pain in 79.5% of the performed blocks. At presentation, 17 patients reported
some gastrointestinal symptoms in addition to the chronic abdominal pain, while the rest of the
patients reported no gastrointestinal symptoms or complaints and pain was the sole complaint
(Table 3). The percent improvement was 54.7% В± 36.4% for a duration of 0 490 days and
ongoing for the 44 blocks with complete data (excluding the one patient with the missing follow up).
We also reported medication consumption before and after the procedure, accounting for all
medications used for treating pain, anxiety and sleep. We found that there was no significant
change in medication use for the following medications before and after the procedure:

Things Done Well During The Presentation
Things done well
During the presentation there were examples provided from the textbook to allow the trainees to
capture what was being presented and said. This allowed for them to see what was being taught.
It was also helpful that there were examples provided during the presentation to allow for a real
life experiences in the workforce, making everything more relatable to each individual in its own
unique way. There were also instances where trainees were asked questions and to engage them
throughout the process of training. This would allow them to constantly think, especially when
there were pop quizzes throughout. Trainees were also able to ask questions during the entire
presentation, allowing for people to have their answers answered at any point. In order for this to
succeed we had to prepare beforehand so that the questions would be answered as effectively and
as clearly as they could. Having handouts that had the slides with room to write notes on the side
allowed the audience to make notes and to write ideas. We also provide quizzes that were interactive
throughout the presentation on the slides. This allowed us to ask the question, and afterwards there
were animations that showed the audience which answer was the right one. It was a little bit of a
learning curve, but it was done clearly and effectively after some research had been performed. By
implanting new ideas into presentations, it not only allows the presenters to learn something new,
but it also

Galileo Galilei Research Paper
Galileo Galilei was a teacher, astronomer, philosopher and physicist who is now referred to as the
Father of the Scientific Revolution. The scientific revolution refers to a period of time of great
advancement in the sciences that challenged the traditional beliefs about mankind s place and
relationship with the universe held by religious orders (Bellis). Born in Pisa Italy on February 15,
1564 Galileo was the son of Vincenzo Galilei, musician and mathematician. He was the first of six
children and began his education at the age of eight at the Camaldolese Monastery at Vallombrosa.
Bringing a close connection to the Christian religion he became a lutenist. However, his father

Before the age of twenty he had made great observations in mechanics. He observed, a chandelier
swinging and when time with his heartbeat he noticed that the swings in the chandelier were in
larger or smaller arcs but whether it was swinging back or forth it took the same amount of time.
This observation prompted Galileo to being his experiments, validating his theories and providing
factual evidence to back his notions. During 1595 Galileo had taken a compass design invented
by Niccolo Tartaglia and Guidobaldo del Monte and by 1598 he had improved it making it more
accurate he had created a geometric and military compass by today s standards. Not only this but
with the use of Galileo s flotation principles he invented a thermoscope which was later used as a
basis for the modern day thermometer. Another of his experiments was an attempt to measure the
speed of light. In which he and an assistant stood on two hilltops, holding a lantern with a shudder.
When one opened the shutter the other would open his shutter. This took place with a distance of
less than a mile and Galileo did not detect a delay in the time greater that when they were only
meters apart. Although there was no conclusion to this experiment, Galileo thought that the
distance between the hilltops and that perhaps the distance was too small for a worthy
measurement. Galileo

Cultural Destruction
Development of society has forced the Native culture to vanish due to the break their tradition has
undergone in the past. The Natives were forced to adapt the white tradition thinking it would
benefit them in the long run. Both The Loons by Margaret Laurence and Compatriots by Emma
Lee Warrior portray similar messages about the Natives. The main characters Hilda and Vanessa
represent ignorance because of their stereotypical nature towards the culture. However, as Vanessa
matures she goes through a realization and understands the sorrow and pain of Piquette and her
tradition other than herself. Vanessa s final understanding of Piquette s life and culture... Show

The significance of her father s effort becomes valuable to Vanessa when she returns to Diamond
Lake and sees the changes. The small pier which my father had built was gone, and in its place
there was a large and solid pier built by the government, for Galloping Mountain was now a
national park, and Diamond Lake had been renamed Lake Wapakata, for it was felt that an Indian
name would have a greater appeal to tourists (Laurence 119). The government s idealization of the
lake shows how their ignorance connects with young Vanessa visualizing of Piquette as the
daughter of the forest . Although, Vanessa s knowledgeof Piquette s life is much clearer, she still
doesn t understand the Native culture. Vanessa also realizes that trying to gain more knowledge
and understanding about the Native culture through Piquette won t get her anywhere because
Piquette is as clueless as her. She accepts that her understanding towards the tradition is not going
anywhere further than what the white society views it. However, Vanessa acknowledges the
effects the white society has done to the Tonnerres family and the Natives. Piquette had the
mindset of an adult while growing up due to the struggles her family has undergone. The mother
s not there, my father replied. She took off a few years back. Can t say I blame her. Piquette
cooks for them, and she says Lazarus would never do anything for himself as long as she s there

Helmut Schwab and Sri Aurobindo presented two examples of using the term cosmopsychology in
this expanded, non astrological context. The Dutch physician Matthijs Cornelissen of the Indian
Psychology Institute used the term cosmopsychology in regards to the teachings of the Indian
teacher Sri Aurobindo (1872 1950).6 Aurobindo called his cosmopsychology or spiritual
psychology integral yoga. His teachings have also been referred to as integral psychology and as
integrality. Integral yoga is based on Hinduism s Advaita Vedanta (not two) or non dual philosophy.
According to Aurobindo, consciousness pervades the universe and manifests in a range of
gradations. Consciousness undergoes both involutionary and evolutionary phases. Its involutionary
phase is seen as the creation of matter and the physical universe. Its evolutionary phase is seen in
the evolution of life and the spiritual development of humanity. Aurobindo s teachings focused
primarily on the ongoing evolution of consciousness by means of the spiritual development of the
individual. Aurobindo described three systems of mind or consciousness: (1) the surface/outer
/frontal consciousness (typically gross state), consisting of physical, vital, and mental levels of
consciousness; (2) a deeper/psychic/soul system behind the frontal in each of its levels (inner
physical, inner vital, inner mental, and innermost psychic or soul; typically subtle state); and (3) the

Comparing Eveline And The Storm
Since the dawn of the Age of Enlightenment, feminism became an ideology and movement that
inspired feminist to establish equal political, economic, cultural and social rights for women.
However, during its first years, women are restrained by the power of men that they cannot have
their own happiness. Particularly in English literature, such as the short story Eveline by James
Joyce and The Storm by Kate Chopin, both authors demonstrate a different type of female
character at their time that follow through the generic cycle of women being the property of
men, as well as their response to the feudal society of male dominance. In Eveline , Eveline is a
19 years old girl with tedious and miserable life. Despite her chance to start a new life with Frank
in Bueno Ayres, she bail out from the opportunity and continue her suffering life, therefore loses her

Benefits During Middle Childhood
During middle childhood, being a good parent requires the ability to adjust to your child s
fluctuating needs with as little conflict as possible (Eccles, 1999, p. 40). Children at this age are
looking to gain independence while still needing the stability of home (Eccles, 1999, p. 40).
Because of this, if a parent is trying to be their childs friend, there may not be a positive outcome
for the parent or the child. Being a child s friend puts you emotionally on the same level with them;
however, during middle childhooda child benefits from knowing that there is an adult who loves
them, that can handle the tough times and decisions in life, can give them instruction, and can set

Mordor s Rings Essay
I smell it in the air. Much that once was is lost, for none now live who remember it.
It began with the forging of the Great Rings. Three were given to the Elves, immortal, wisest and
fairest of all beings. Seven to the Dwarf Lords, great miners and craftsmen of the mountain halls.
And nine, nine rings were gifted to the race of Men, who above all else desire power. For within
these rings was bound the strength and the will to govern each race. But they were all of them
deceived, for another ring was made. Deep in the land of Mordor, in the Fires of Mount Doom, the
Dark Lord Sauron forged in secret a master ring to control all others, and into this ring he poured
his cruelty, his malice and his will to dominate all life. One ring to rule them all. ... Show more

Mount Doom, they fought for the freedom of Middle Earth. Victory was near, but the power of the
ring could not be undone.
It was in this moment, when all hope had faded, that Isildur, son of the king, took up his father s
sword.
Sauron, enemy of the free peoples of Middle Earth, was defeated. The Ring passed to Isildur,
who had this one chance to destroy evil forever, but the hearts of men are easily corrupted. And

Brown Sugar Compare And Contrast
Coconut sugar looks a lot like brown sugar and the two are often considered interchangeable, but
are they? The answer is not as clear cut as you might think. Below, we will take a look at the
flavors of these two sugars and consider how well they work as substitutes for each other. How
do the flavor of coconut sugar and the flavor of brown sugar differ? These sugars come from two
completely different sources but are still similar in terms of their chemical makeup. When
considering the taste of coconut sugar s taste, it is important to note that it does not taste like
coconut any more than beet sugar tastes like beets. It is taken from the buds of the coconut tree,
not from the coconut itself. Sap from the buds is processed using methods similar to those used
for converting maple syrup to maple sugar. It does taste similar to brown sugar and provides
very mild caramel notes. Brown sugar is simply granulated white sugar with added molasses for
color and a mild flavor. Because molasses is used, brown sugar has a moister and stickier texture
when compared to that of coconut sugar. It is usually made from sugar cane, but it can be made
from sugar beets. What you will get from it in terms of taste is sweetness accompanied the deep...

Some bakers have found that because of its softer texture, coconut sugar does not blend as well
with butter as brown sugar does. This results in some pastries turning out dry or overly dense.
The grains also tend to be coarser than those of brown sugar, which can lead to speckling and a
more porous texture in some baked goods. You can compensate for the dryness by adding extra
butter and you can prevent the speckling and texture issues by grinding the sugar in a food
processor or blender. In applications where it is melted or sprinkled, coconut sugar is virtually
identical to brown

Craig Ferguson s Journey To America
With the exception of most comedians, celebrities are an attractive group of people. The female
celebrities often boast large breasts, full lips, and flowing locks of their chosen hair color (usually
blonde); while their male counterparts come equipped with bulging biceps, toned torsos, and
chiseled jawlines. A combination of natural good looks and the money to purchase the finest clothes
and beauty products on the market places celebrities far above the common peoplewhen it comes to
appearance.
Of course, having all that money can often lead to some pretty irresponsible decisions. While it
can indeed be spent on hair gel, makeup, and plastic surgery, many celebrities find themselves
blowing their earnings on a life of drugs and alcohol. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Westbrook first began appearing in EastEnders in 1990, at just 16 years of age. Shortly after, she
developed a fondness for cocaine and was using the drug regularly by 1995. In 1996, producers
had become so exasperated by her frequent tardiness and poor behavior on set that they had no
choice but to let her go. Despite losing a significant chunk of her income, Westbrook continued her
use of cocaine. In 2000, she shocked the British public when she appeared at the British Soap
Awards with her septum missing, eroded by years of drug abuse.
Westbrook would enter rehab several times over the next decade, enjoying brief periods of
sobriety before falling prey to her demons once again. Despite undergoing plastic surgery to repair
her nose and give her a more youthful appearance, Danniella Westbrook still bears the scars of
decades of substance abuse and cocaine addiction.

Essay about The Renaissance as a Distinct Period of Time
The Middle Ages was a time in history where everyone was faithful to religion as well as others.
Also, in the Middle Ages, people were encouraged to always try their best; they were encouraged
to strive for the highest achievement possible and to never give up. The Renaissance, however,
was more focused on becoming matured and finding a way to be successful at everything one
does. During this era, people strived to become all sided men, also known as; renaissancemen. This
means they are not only successful in one type of art but in all types of art, as well as math,
science, and literature. The Renaissance was a distinct period in time that was separated from the
Middle Agesand began a new era.

They believed that the people of the Middle Ages used religion as an excuse to drink and gain
money and power (Document 5). The Middle Ages was a time where people were more conserved
with education and did not have the curiosities that fell upon those in the Renaissance.
Curiosity of the human body and deeper knowledge about art and literature became two popular
areas throughout the Renaissance. Leonardo daVinci drew beautiful pieces of art that depicted the
natural and realistic human body and it s internal muscle and bone structures. The drawings of the
human body by daVinci, show that he was not afraid to go the distance and have no limits as to
how far he will push himself to understand the human body (Document 6). Leonardo was a true
Renaissance man. In addition, another evidential person who leads a reader towards making the
inference that the Renaissance is a separate era from the Middle Ages, is Johannes Kepler. Johannes
Kepler was an astronomer from Germany that made an observation about people in the Middle
Ages that tend to follow and agree with everything the priests say. Johannes said that with the
distinct knowledge of the Renaissance, people now had their own education and had the power to
question what others said or thought (Document 7).
Education was always existent through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. However, the
education during the Renaissance was extremely different and more widely spread than the
education that was provided in

  • 5. UNESCO Fullbright Fellowship I am completing my Fulbright Grant year as an English Teaching Assistant in South Korea. In this role, I teach conversational English to students and hold teachers workshops at Gwangyang High School, an all boy s school. Upon my arrival, I was quickly able to adjust to the school environment, feeling integrated with the other teachers and comfortable with the students. I applied specifically to Fulbright Koreabecause I wanted to gain greater insight into the country s recent economic success and add diversity to my international experiences by immersing myself in an Asian culture with which I was not yet familiar. Along with English enhancement, the other main focus of these workshops is cultural exchange and as a result of our discussions, the other teachers and I have gained a nuanced understanding of each other s backgrounds. Through daily one on one sessions in the fall, I helped prepare three students for an English speech contest. I have also counseled several students who were applying to colleges abroad. One of my favorite ways to interact with students is during our lunch break when we play baseball together. I am conscious of the fact that increasing the time that I spend with my students strengthens not only their English skills but also our intercultural dialogue. When away from my work at Gwangyang High School, I have filled my time with activities that have enhanced my knowledge of Korea, while also fully embracing the mission of cultural exchange and scholarship espoused by the Fulbright program. Early in my time here I became interested in the differences in cultural activities, food, and ideologies between provinces. These differences intrigued me because of the small size of the country and the current ease of transport. This initial observation led me to the research ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Tactics Of Fear The Tactics of Fear Roland Emmerich s A Day After Tomorrow (2004) emphasizes the impact of climate change on the world after an abrupt catastrophic climate event, triggered by human induced climate change takes place. The movie begins by showing the collapse of the Larsen B Ice Shelf, which causes a global warming induced shutdown of the North Atlantic thermohaline circulation system (Leiserowitz). The shutdown of the North Atlantic thermocline, triggers extreme weather events worldwide and subsequently a new ice age, with wrenching global consequences (Leiserowitz). The movie follows, Jack Hall a paleoclimatologist, as he travels across the country in the giant storm to reach his son, and save him from the approaching ice age. As Jack ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Emmerich achieves this by capturing each individual natural disaster at different camera angles that emphasis the violence of each disaster and emphasizes terror of the characters. Emmerich demonstrates the enormity of each natural disaster by switching between the perspective of the scared citizens and the perspective of the natural disaster. Doing this simple perspective flip he highlights the large difference between the disaster and the citizen. For example, in the Tornado scene he uses an accumulation of these techniques to scare the audience. He beings with a low angle shot of the Tornado depicting how large it is in comparison to the city and people. He then switches to an aerial view following the Tornado as it rips through the city. After letting the shocked audience watch the destruction from a faraway view he moves the camera back down and makes it so that the camera is positioned like a character in the storm. Using this technique of making it seem like the audience is in the natural disaster scene triggers a nervous system response. As the audiences watches the scene as if they are a part of it they quickly accumulate the fear the movie characters have for their own safety. After letting the audience soak this in for a while he goes back to an aerial view where more tornados are now tearing apart the city. Siobhan O Shea at student at University of California Santa Cruz, picked up on the fear she was experiencing during this scene. For a while there I believe I was in actual danger... my heart rate was pumping and I could feel myself getting ready to run. Once the scene change I realized I was not a part of the movie nor in danger, but Emmerich definitely provokes an emotional response for his audiences by using this camera angle position (O Shea). ... My central idea for the theme of Rikki Tikki Tavi by Rydyard Kipling is blind loyalty. I am positive that loyalty is one of the superlative themes of this story because throughout the story, both the protagonist and antagonist show loyalty. Rikki Tikki, the protagonist, shows his loyalty to the human family, his own family, and Darzee by protecting them from the immoral Naginia. Another correct theme could be bravery. In 1932, stocks were only worth about 20 percent of their value than in the summer of 1929. The Stock Market Crash of 1929 was not the lone cause of the Great Depression, but it played a major impact in the collapse of the economy. History.Com stated that by 1933, approximately half of the banks in America had failed, unemployment had risen to 30% of the workforce. In my opinion, The Stock Market Crash of 1929 occurred over a certain time length in the month of October. I agree with economic analyst Jesse Colombo that on Black Tuesday the stock market had collapsed, and caused chaos. The collapse caused chaos, leading to high rates of unemployment of closures of many banks. The crash occurred because there was an excess of bank loans, low wages, speculation, and because of buying on margin. • 12. Theories Of Structuralism In Literature Structuralism and its different approaches to literature Structuralism was developed in France in 1950 s as an approach of reading literary texts. Structuralism seeks to understand that no element can be understood separately. It attempts to understand a work of art in the context of the larger structures they are part of. Structuralism is a way of thinking and activities which is chiefly concerned with the perceptions and descriptions of structures. In this regard, Terence Hawkes says: The full significance of any entity cannot be perceived unless and until it is integrated into the surface of which it forms a part.1 One can derive from Terence Hawkes view that structuralism would refer to a system or body of principles which is derived from the belief that any phenomenon is a structure made up of ... And meaning comes out in the opposition between semes, for example, old/young; black/white; boy/girl etc. These semes function as actants (structural unit, neither a character nor a specific narrative event) to produce narrative. Griemas semes are based on Saussurean notion that form the basic formula, the rules and the underlying structure of language (langue). The semes express themselves as narrative and plots and stories in contexts (parole). Thus the semes in different combinations are stated in particular contexts to generate stories in particular contexts. In literary theory, the basic structure of the production of meaning through binary opposition is called signification. We often find the dual opposition or semes in a text or any piece of ... In the United States of America, there are two primary beliefs that inform and support class ideology: the American Dream and the belief that the U.S is a meritocracy. The two themes, the American Dream and meritocracy, are used to understand inequalities and construct social worlds. The American Dream is the U.S. s national ethos, when people think of this nation, they think the land of opportunity. It is a uniquely American belief that does not acknowledge the role of life chances and patterns of social barriers. Connected to the American Dream is a meritocracy, which supports that success is linked to hard work and failure is caused by low determination and laziness. The author of Between the World and Me, Ta Nehisi Coates, presents on the idea of the American Dream not being truly all American in his letter to his son, Samori. Throughout the letter, Coates emphasized the concept that the American Dream is a white Dream, not attainable by the black people; police brutality against black people is a reflection of the will of this white American Dream. Before addressing Coates truth about the American Dream, the idea of race needs to be discussed in relation to the American Dream. Coates proclaims that Americans believe in the reality of race as a defined, indubitable feature of the natural world. Hercules exhibits many of the traits of a classical hero, including numerous guides, hazardous journeys and several hardships and afflictions. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hercules demonstrates a second characteristic when he embarks on his twelve incredibly dangerous labours. By completing these tasks, Hercules would be forgiven for the killing of his family while under Hera s spell. An instance of one of these tasks is when he must destroy Hydra, a creature with many heads, one of which is immortal. He fulfills this task by cutting off most of its heads and then laying its immortal head under a rock for eternity. On another labour Hercules is sent to retrieve Cerberus (the three headed dog of Hades) and bring him to the King then, return it to the post at the entrance to the underworld. A third trait of a classical hero is demonstrated when Hercules experiences many afflictions and misfortunes during his journeys. Ever since Hera s husband Zeus had an affair and gave life to Hercules, she has hated him and is responsible for most of his afflictions. Comparison Of Oedipus And Frogs To begin with, if Oedipus and Frogs are to be taken into consideration and the aspects of the plot dissected using the guidelines provided in Poetics, then based on Aristotle s definition of plot as organization of events, it can be stated that the structure of plot is the same for the two stories of opposing genres, for both have a beginning, a middle and an end one following after the other resulting in a well constructed plot not beginning or ending at any arbitrary point (Aristotle 10 13 14). However, while the character experiences a fall from good fortune to bad fortune in most tragedies, in most comedies the character experiences a fall from bad fortune to good fortune (Aristotle 21 22). Evil Characters In William Golding s Lord Of The Flies SiddhДЃrtha Gautama, a man who founded the basis for a religion with 500 million faithful followers, postulated that It is a man s own mind, not his enemy or foe, that lures him to evil ways. Gautama describes that one s flawed decisions are not influenced by his enemies, and one s final decision is his to make alone, not to be affected by others. This is illustrated by the actions of the main figures in Lord of the Flies. The characters in the novel are British schoolboys under the age of twelve, yet on multiple accounts it is demonstrated how violent the youngsters can be. The narrative is an ongoing struggle between the juveniles and their own thoughts, which they refer to as the Beast. They refuse to accept that the Beast is in their minds, so they portray it as a monster which lurks during nighttime. The boys whose minds develop negatively create a civilization where brutality is emboldened, while the few that resist the temptation to become hateful are loathed and killed by the others. A mother isn t supposed to be your best friend, that s not her role. She is a confidant or a great listener who unconditionally loves you. Within Great Britain, the loss of empire and receding Protestantism precipitated the re emergence of Englishness, Scottishness, and Welshness. Historians of Britain began to ask what it meant to be British, on what foundations did a sense of British national identity rest, and when should [British] history begin? Linda Colley posits answers to these three questions in Britons: Forging the Nation 1707 1837. Britons came to define themselves (sometimes) as a single people, not because of any political or cultural consensus at home, but rather in reaction to the Other beyond their shores and Britishnesswas superimposed over an array of internal differences in response to contact with the Other, and above all in response to conflict with the Other. Thus, in Colley s formulation, Britain was an invention forged above all by war with Catholic France. War against the Other was the mechanism for Britishness, but Protestantism was the foundation that made the invention of Great Britain possible. I decide I am an artist inside of a tornado that will not let me go (King 128). Sarah decides she is in a mental state where she cannot portray her feelings. She uses this excuse of being stuck in a tornado to reject the fact that ultimately she will need to get her life back on track and accept who she is. This is another one of Sarah s shenanigans to try to be original, and by doing this, she finds a reason to avert from being a normal person. People today encounter the same situation in everyday life by using excuses to get around inevitable things. Sarah s manifestation of change continues in the middle of the story as well. As Sarah progresses, she shows traits of tediousness. While reflecting on her feelings about herself, she says, I am an umbrella on a day with no rain (King 9). • 34. How Did The Roman Games Affect The Ancient Olympic Games The Ancient Olympic Games has made an impact both on the past and present time. The event became well known to the public ever since its first event around 776 BC. The Greek games determined and selected certain civilians who had exceptional endurance and athleticism within the games. The event was an opportunity for the Greek civilization to enhance their athleticism and sportsmanship without any risk of death or injury. Events like running, jumping, discus throw and many others gave glory and wreath like crowns to those worthy contestants who proved to have outstanding physical training. The purpose of the Ancient Olympics was secular in order to honor the Greek god Zeus. However in Rome, the Romans also followed with their own event to honor the Roman chief god, Jupiter Optimus Maximus. The Roman Games, called ludi, was quite different from the Greek Olympic system. Ludi had three programs of spectacles for Roman civilians: ludi circenses, venationes, and ludi scaenici. Ludi circenses were games being played within a circus, most primarily chariot racingand gladiator fights (munera) were the main events under the circus program. Venationes were games with an additional appearance from animals. Animals played part in the Roman Games to be hunted as a complement to the gladiator games. Ludi scaenici were not technically actual games compared to chariot racing and animal hunts, but a leisure activity of watching theater. The purpose of Ludi was to not only honor Jupiter, ... (8 pts) According to Kuhn, a paradigm is universally recognized scientific achievements (a theory of science), which become a framework for scientific research and knowledge. It is a set of practices that defines science for a particular period of time. This paradigm provides a scientific community a model, within which it evolves. The paradigm defines what is to be observed and analyzed, what kind of questions should be asked, how they should be structured, how the results of the experiment should be interpreted, how the research should be conducted as well as equipment it should be conducted with etc. What is the difference, according to Kuhn, between normal and revolutionary science? Before this the pendulum wasn t seen or addressed within the old paradigm Why does Kuhn say that, before and after a scientific revolution, scientists live in different worlds ? If Kuhn is correct in claiming this, why would a scientific community choose a new paradigm? But for me it was becoming reality (again!). We had tried this before in 2012 and a great time was had by all. I had particularly enjoyed that trip, as being an only child, I am usually on holiday alone with my parents, so to have the chance to ski with a group my age filled me with excitement and anticipation of fun times! Things Done Well During The Presentation Things done well During the presentation there were examples provided from the textbook to allow the trainees to capture what was being presented and said. This allowed for them to see what was being taught. It was also helpful that there were examples provided during the presentation to allow for a real life experiences in the workforce, making everything more relatable to each individual in its own unique way. There were also instances where trainees were asked questions and to engage them throughout the process of training. This would allow them to constantly think, especially when there were pop quizzes throughout. Trainees were also able to ask questions during the entire presentation, allowing for people to have their answers answered at any point. In order for this to succeed we had to prepare beforehand so that the questions would be answered as effectively and as clearly as they could. Having handouts that had the slides with room to write notes on the side allowed the audience to make notes and to write ideas. We also provide quizzes that were interactive throughout the presentation on the slides. This allowed us to ask the question, and afterwards there were animations that showed the audience which answer was the right one.
