Similes In Dulce Et Decorum Est
Wilfred Owen s poem Dulce et Decorum est shows how harsh and terrible war really was. Owen
uses language features such as similes, personification and strong adjectives to make the readers
feel pity, disbelief and disgust at the struggles these men went through during the war.
Throughout the poem the poet makes the reader feel disgust using violent imagery to show the
harsh conditions that the soldiers experienced, and how the war affected them. This is shown
when an unlucky soldier is described dying in a gas attack. His comrade sees him dying and
describes it by saying ...under a green sea, I saw him drowning, and his face was hanging like a
devil s sick of sin . This shows that the soldier is drowning in the gas and has lost control of his
face and breathing. This simile disgusts the reader, because we can imagine the soldier drowning
in his own fluids while his friends can do nothing but watch helplessly from afar. This helped me
understand how scary war can be, as it can cause people to die painfully and... Show more content

This simile is an example of the imagery that is used very effectively throughout the poem. It
helps the reader to imagine and hear troops coughing and swearing as they trudged through the
mud. We can imagine the soldiers stumbling along, like knock kneed men that I think would be
like old men without canes; and coughing like hags with their croaky voices and rattly breaths.
This quote also helps me understand how hard it must be for the soldiers to keep on going because
they must be injured and tired, and physically weak like old men would

Surrogacy In Australia Essay
Australian law reforms have been adequately effective in dealing with surrogacy and birthing
technologies. The NSW state reforms have effectively supported the changing values of society by
aiming to achieve justice and avoid conflicts surrounding surrogacy, while the commonwealth is
obsolete on effective laws to prevent surrogacyissues. As the demand for surrogacy and birthing
technologies increases, issues surrounding surrogacy are more prevalent in society. Additionally,
there is no Commonwealth law, meaning each state and territory has developed individual laws of
surrogacy and birthing technologies, allowing for issues and challenges surrounding the protection
and the rights of all parties involved.

Effective law reform such as The Surrogacy Act 2010 (NSW) has greatly improved the
Government responses to issues surrounding Surrogacy. The Act allows for transferral of
parentage from the biological mother to the adoptive parents. This allows non legally binding
donor agreements to be considers and accepted, achieving justice for both parties involved in the
process. By adapting to social values and accepting modern family structure justice is served for
society. When the Surrogacy Act was introduced in March 2011, it becomes illegal to enter a
commercial surrogacy agreement oversea in NSW, QLD, ACT, with penalties of up to $100000
or 2 years imprisonment. These penalties are seen in the worse interest for the child, as the child
could be without their adoptive parents or grow up in economic hardship due to the fines.
Although this is effective as it prohibits commercial surrogacy, as it underlines rights and freedoms
under the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), this is mirrored into state legislation to
protect the child involved. This is highlighted under article 35 of CRC, where states should take
measures to prevent sale or trafficking of children for any

The Gempei War Analysis
Liam Brownlie Egan F Block 3/29/2018 The Gempei War; a battle of military might, or a
political feud? Word Count: 1544 Part I: Introduction The 1180 through 1185 Gempei War
between the Japanese Taira and Minamoto clans is often pointed to as an example of the Japanese
warrior ethic. The Heike Monogatari traditionally would argue that this is true, however, the reality
of the 12th century conflict paints a much different story. Analysis of the war shows that the
deciding factors of the war were not necessarily the military strength of the Minamoto, but instead
it was a brilliant and lucky political chess game played by Minamoto Yoritomo. Yoritomo was able
to develop strategic alliances with local lords across eastern Japan and benefited from... Show more

The Imperial Court neglected the many communities and prefectures that make up Japan. This led
to many local lords taking matters into their own hands, and establishing virtually autonomous
kingdoms each fighting each other for power. When the Gempei War broke out in 1180 Yoritomo
pounced on the opportunity to gain overwhelming support. With the establishment of the Kamakura
Shogunate, Yoritomo designed a system that would allocate authority to local military leaders that
would, in turn, remain loyal to the Shogun. During the Gempei War, Yoritomo offered these
positions to military lords across eastern Japan. With this strategy, Yoritomo was able to amass a
force that outnumbered that of the Taira. This quote addresses the importance of this fact, the war
s larger significance lay in Yoritomo s rechanneling of hostility among provincial warriors. By
promising them land and jobs when he won, Yoritomo assured the loyalty of warriors who wanted
to topple their regional rivals, (Selinger,4). Had Yoritomo not appealed to these lords, the Taira
would have been able to crush his

Lockheed Martin Case 2011
Executive Summary
Lockheed Martin is a leading security and defense company based in Bethesda, MD with operations
that span the globe. Lockheed Martin experienced a positive turnaround under new CEO Robert
Stevens leadership, and is now entrenched as a leading competitor in the Aerospace and Defense (A
amp;D) industry. They maintain an extensive business portfolio and continue to increase
shareholder value. However, recent issues with contract mismanagement and cost overruns
involving the government F 35 program leave a negative outlook on their operations. They also
face increasing pressure to acquire and retain key employees from a diminishing talent pool.
Government budget cuts threaten to hurt revenues, thus making it important for ... Show more

Efficient buildings, where companies such as Lockheed Martin have converted their buildings to be
efficient in saving energy, which is a way to cut costs in a declining economic environment,
emphasize stewardship of the environment. Europe has enacted a Clean Sky initiative, which is a
large research project with the goal of providing a step in environmentally friendly air transport
technology.
Technology is an important facet in the industry, and therefore has a high emphasis. Cutting edge
technology has driven rising costs for consumers. This also causes R amp;D spending to be fairly
high. Because of this, Defense companies often seek to find commercial use for new technology.
Forecasted Defense trends indicate industry adjustment to reduced government defense spending.
Because companies have overlooked operational efficiency and relied heavily on government
spending, efficiency will now become a focus with decreased spending. Companies will also
attempt to explore new markets, such as Lockheed Martin s secured contract with Israel for future
purchase of F 35 s, as well as entering into related markets to diversify revenues. Increased
competition is expected due to consolidations among smaller companies in an effort to become
more competitive (Thompson).

Germination Lab
Title: The Effects of Freezing on Germination Rate
Introduction:
The purpose of this experiment was to discover which species out of three seeds would have the
germination rate be the most negatively affected after being frozen for several days. Seed banks
store frozen seeds which implied that freezing seeds doesn t cause any major damage to the
seeds. However, some species of seeds would probably be more resistant to being frozen than
others. Seeds are native to and are grown in many different types of environments some of which
are much warmer and colder than others so there seemed to be a possibility that plants from colder
environments would produce seeds less susceptible to damage from low temperatures.
Experimental Question: How does ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There were also procedural problems including imprecise measurement of the water at the
beginning of the setup, inconsistent seed placement on the paper towels and irregular times at
which the seeds were observed and watered. Also, the seeds were placed very close together
which resulted in roots growing over into other paper towels and the faster spread of mold. This
mold, which began growing on some of the seeds within a few days, was a major factor. Because
the mold began to spread to other seeds and because none of the seeds sprouted after mold had
grown, the moldy seeds probably should have been removed. There were also a couple breaks in
the pattern of observing and watering the seeds

Roles Of Women In The Arabian Nights
Bryanna Samuels Dr. Collins Western Heritage 105 01 11 19 2017 The Arabian Nights Men
have always been and most likely are the leaders of their families. Men are always supposed to
be strong and fend for themselves, and always take care of the women and the children. In this
case though, things are rather switched around. In the Arabian Nights, women play a very
empowering role. It seems that in most cases the women are equal to the men and play the same
roles as the men in Arabian Nights. The stories in Arabian Nights give a different insight as to
what was going on during this time. The women were not valued as much as they should have
been, they were often punished for not being as womanly as the man would like them to be. In the
stories of The Arabian nights the men believe that they have the authority of two women

The Columbian Exchange, Cons, And The Impacts Of The...
In 1492, Columbus and his crew disembarked three ships: The Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa
Maria. He and his crew were kindly welcomed by the foreign men and women he thought to be
the Indians of Asia. However, about two thousand years earlier, a group of Viking explorers
discovered the land and stayed there for a few years, before returning to Greenland. Although
Columbus did not discover this foreign land, he was responsible for the changes that soon followed
his voyage. These changes, referred to as the Columbian Exchange, altered the way the natives
lived, traded, hunted, and fought amongst other tribes. It also led to undesirable effects for the
tribes, as a result of the introduction of new diseases, slave labor, and advanced weaponry. From
first contact, the foreign Europeans forced the natives into quickly and radically adapting to the
new threats they faced and learning how to use the newly introduced products the Europeans
carried over to the New World. As the Europeans started arriving to the distant continent, disease
was an invisible menace to the natives. Although the Native American population was not aware of
the diseases the European men carried, the viruses decimated villages and quickly spread to
faraway lands from the minor exchange between village traders. The European explorers brought
smallpox, influenza, typhus, measles, malaria, and diphtheria into the new land, all of which the
native population had no immunity towards. This introduction

Epsom Salts Lab Report
Introduction:
Magnesium sulfate, MgSO4, also commonly known as Epsom salts, is generally present in
mineral water. It is used as a bath salt to relieve muscle aches and stiffness and as a laxative.
Magnesium sulfate is a hydrated salt and will lose its water if it is not in the presence of oxygen
and also through high temperatures. Magnesium ions are essential for plant growth, as they form
part of the chlorophyll molecule used to convert sunlight into chemical energy. A solution of
magnesium sulfate can be sprayed on the plant, or poured onto the soil to assist the plant with its
growth.
Through the experiment conducted the degree of hydration and percentage of hydration of the
magnesium sulfate will be determined using the process of constant mass, by heating the salt it will

The Epsom salts have a variety of uses, most significantly its use for plants. As Magnesium ions
from the magnesium sulfate are essential for plant growth, as they form part of the chlorophyll

solutions of magnesium sulfate on the plant. The magnesium sulfate assists and improves the
growth of many plants by applying the solution on a weekly basis. As magnesium sulfate is soluble
by applying it weekly, when there is rain the solution dissolves into the water and is pushed further
down the soil of the plant and provides the essential nutrients the plant requires.
Generally around 375 grams of fully hydrated MgSO4 is applied weekly onto the plants, from this
amount of magnesium sulfate, around 9.86% and 37 grams of the MgSO4 is made up of the
magnesium ions, which is the most significant feature of the salt needed by the plants. This was

Use of Language in A Clockwork Orange Essay
Examination of the Use of Language in A Clockwork Orange
The created patch work language of Nadsat in the novel, A Clockwork Orange, satirizes the
social classes and gang life of Anthony Burgess s futuristic society. The most prominent of these
tools being his use of a completely new language and the depiction of family life from the eyes of
a fifteen year old English hoodlum. Burgess effectively broke arcane traditions when he wrote A

The reader would be brainwashed into learning minimal Russian. The novel was to be an exercise
in linguistic programming, with the exoticisms gradually clarified by context: I would resist to the
limit any publisher s demand that a glossary be provided. (You ve Had Your Time 38)
Burgess believed that adding a glossary to help define the slang used in A Clockwork Orange
would have somehow cheapened it, and it most certainly would have. He evens admits to
brainwashing his readers just for the sake of what he called an exercise in linguistic programming.
Without even realizing it, the readers of A Clockwork Orange were Burgess guinea pigs. It was,
however, a successful experiment. Burgess achieved the sense that he was trying to convey, and
readers understood the language without too much difficulty. That is, of course, until the book was
published in America. Roger Craik comments on this linguistic phenomina in his critical essay on A
Clockwork Orange.
Nevertheless, when the first American edition of A Clockwork Orange was published in 1963, it
had not only a glossary but an afterword by Stanley Edgar Hyman. The glossary confirms the
preponderance of Slavic based or more particularly Russian based coinages, and the afterword still
stands as the most comprehensive discussion of nadsat. Even though Hyman surprisingly confesses
himself unable to read Burgess s book without

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Lando Simonetti founded La Martina for the purpose of producing and selling functional polo
equipment, focusing on controlled growth, limited availability, and embodying the polo lifestyle.
Originally developed for polo players, the initial customer base of La Martina was comprised of
polo players, teams and clubs. This niche market, with only 7,000 to 8,000 professional players
and 20,000 casual players worldwide, is concentrated in only a few countries across the world. As
polo is typically played by more elite segments of the society, La Martina also targeted its products

Entering the fashion segment, the company can conquer new geographical markets, including
places where polo is not played. Given La Martina s brand image as a well established maker of
quality and high end goods with a genuine mission, customers are likely to be loyal to the brand
and continue to buy the new products. The experienced employees of the company as well as
PMG would help to further strengthen the position of the new, more diversified La Martina.
Finally, since fashion also varies across geographic locations, designs must be custom made based
on the local tastes. This should not be significant problem for La Martina, as it already has
experience in catering to individual national markets.
Although La Martina goods are high quality and high end, Lando has taken great care to present
them more as functional products for polo rather than fashion. The new fashion products could be
hard to promote among the company s original customer base, polo players and polo aficionados, as
the brand perception often drives the future sales of the company. For this reason, promotions must
be strategically focused to maintain company credibility, ensuring that original customers as well as
new customers are satisfied with the new products. Moreover, the fashion industry is a fast

American veterans need more government funding because they have served their country with
honor and their benefits should be commensurate with the sacrifices that they and their families

The Bible As A Historical Document
I felt a very positive impression of who Jesus was after finishing the Book of Matthew. I had a
new image of someone who was a down to earth, caring individual. I did not find quotes of Jesus
that claimed being superior to the common man, of whom sinners could not look upon (a view that
most people had of their Gods for centuries before). Matthew 12:49 50,
Jesus announces to multitudes that they are his mother and brothers. In that way, he puts himself
at an equal level to the people, rather than claiming to be a God above them. This reflects the
whole attitude of the book. Chapters 6 7 of Matthew quote Jesus as he is presenting rules to live by
to the multitudes. To me, all of these sounded like hints to leading... Show more content on

Most of the parables needed to be explained to his disciples, and some of them I wasn t able to

question Jesus as to if they were an effective way to witness to common people. Even today, too
many people read parables as
TRUTH, rather than just a story. Plus, they are misinterpreted. But, I have to tell you that an
amazing coincidence happened to me after I finished reading the Parable of The Pearl of Great
Price. A couple of hours later, I was watching an old episode of Star Trek on TV, and Scotty had
actually quoted the same, exact parable at the end of the show! Funny that the writers of Star Trek
predict the future to still hold the same religion as now, and 2000 years ago.
Both Matthew and Mark write about the part of Pilate in His crucifixion. It seems to me that
Pilate was a good guy , and did not really want to have Jesus killed because he did not see
anything that He did wrong (as compared to Barabbas, the murderer). (Mark 15:1 15) As a
matter of fact, I see that Pilate tried to give Jesus another chance by asking the crowd to choose to
punish the Murderer, or Jesus. Then, washed his hands of this crucifixion after the decision was
made. Why is Pilate portrayed as a Good Guy in these books while we know, historically, that
Pilate was NOT a friend to the Jews?

Philippine, but Vietnamese are forbidden to the sea as well (Bale 2016). The attacking of the
civilian is one of the main causes of the tension. To make the case worse, there is conflict when a
country tries to defense its own territory. The article mentioned, Indonesian maritime law
enforcement officials arrested eight Chinese on charges of illegal fishing. The fishermen were less
than three miles near the water from Indonesia s Natuna Island. Under international law, the land

Essay about Evelyn Waugh s Decline and Fall
Evelyn Waugh s Decline and Fall
Evelyn Waugh was born in 1903. He is not considered to be a distinguished novelist but his
writing is notable because they satirise much that was bizarre in English society. His father was a
publisher and his first novel, Decline and fall, was published in 1928. It is a satire on the preparatory
school industry. It is in the style and humour of Charles Dickens. Evelyn Waugh achieves his
purpose through exaggeration. He paints characters that are larger than life, just like Dickens. We
also see this method used in today s television in programmes like Spitting Image where gargoyle
like images of prominent personalities behave in an outrageous way. The descriptions... Show more

Evelyn Waugh satirises the way that the school employs teachers. They don t care about
qualifications needed to be a teacher; they just employ and rip you off. For example Paul
Pennyfeather does not teach music but he has to. Paul later ends up as a schoolmaster because he
gets expelled from the school for indecent behaviour. This school is nowhere near what any reader
would expect it to be. It s absolutely a joke.
Waugh continues this narrative conversational tone to continue PennyfeatherВґs story. He makes it
seem normal that Church and Gargoyle, again a name Dickens might have chosen to represent the
contrast between the good church and the evil looking gargoyles, can get him a job without the
necessary qualifications, even though testimonials are requested. They decide he is fit for the post
even though he does not know German. Similarly, he is told to give organ lessons to Beste
Chetwynde. Not one of the characters at Llanabba Castle, including the lead Augustus Fagan
Esquire, as he likes too be addressed, seems at all concerned with education, or qualified to
educate. Church and Gargoyle have it in the forth category, that of bad schools. Dr. Fagan
interviews for a few minutes and calls it A most exhausting interview . The

This style was dominant in Brazil and spread all over the country until the 19th century. In the 19th

Huck Finn Rejection Extract Analysis
Text C is based on a protagonist named Holden Caulfield, rejection is present in this extract as
Holden is constantly rejecting Ackley, a fellow student at Pencey. At times Holden also rejects
himself as well as society because he fails to fit in with everyone around him. Text H also
incorporates rejection into the extract, as Protagonist Huck Finn rejects religion, society and
conformity. Both novels have features in them which make them picaresque as both protagonists
could be called outcasts and rogues. Text H is also bildungsroman, as Huck goes on a journey of
self discovery, whilst Holden does not as he learns little about himself. In text C the audience is

This narrative makes the reader feel as if the characters are speaking to them directly,
highlighting their rejection, loneliness and self dismissal. As the two protagonists use
everyday speech it makes them seem more lifelike and appealing to the reader as we feel more
involved in the journey that they both go on. We are also given a deeper insight into the boys
themselves because if the novels were told from a different perspective we wouldn t see their
viewpoint on certain, important and influential situations. Through the first person narrative we
also understand their thought processes and feel their pain, such as when Holden gets upset
when he finds out Stradlater is with the girl he used to like. Their view point of different
situations allows the reader to further develop their understanding of the characters. Such as
when Holden doesn t want Ackley to know that Stradlater beat him up, he says I didn t answer
him when Ackley asked him questions about it or when Ackley wondered where the blood came
from and Holden s response was It ll stop . Holden s blunt, monosyllabic sentences show that he
doesn t want Ackley to know the facts behind the blood. This is maybe because it could damage
his highly built pride or because he gains pleasure from childishly withholding information from
Ackley. Huck s first person narrative shows us into his mind and thought process, understanding
the world through the eyes of child. As he is not yet an adult he doesn t understand most things
going on around him, I didn t think much of it , this shows that he loses interest and gives up
easily because he is not fully

Stylistic Devices In The Giant Wistaria
Final Analysis Writers of works of literature have long employed various stylistic devices to execute
their literary objectives. Some of these stylistic devices include but are not limited to the use of
settings, theme, and characters. Furthermore, such works can be analyzed, understood and
interpreted through the lens of theories such as Feminism, Post colonialism, and Existentialism. The
use of various stylistic devices in service of the exploration of various literary theories serves to
make literature vibrant, richer, and much more useful to the society in which the work is produced.
Through the use of the mentioned stylistic devices, writers are able to demonstrate links that exist
between their works of literature and theories such as Feminism, Post colonialism, and
Existentialism.
Analyzing The Giant Wistaria Using the Feminism Theory Feminism, as a movement, can be
defined as the struggle that seeks to do away with institutionalized patriarchy. Additionally, it has
the aim of championing for the social, political, economic, and cultural equality between the sexes.
In doing this, feminism permeates all levels of society and cannot, therefore, be restricted to
specific disciplines. This is how ideas of Feminism abound in literature. ... Show more content on

child rearing problems around both detachment and attachment. Children of Holocaust survivors
may be assumed to have taken the emotional states and behaviors of their parents. As such,
children who are born to traumatized Holocaust survivors would be predisposed to PTSD

that survivors have been affected to different degrees by trauma and share a psychological

Similarities Between The Holocaust And Salem Witch Trials
Comparing Tragedies What do two events that occured hundred of years apart have in common?
Although the Salem Witch Trials and the Holocaust were very different, they were both led by
misguided judgements of what makes people different. They both consisted of many tragedies
such as false accusation, killing innocent people, and lots of death. The Salem Witch Trials
began in 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts (Salem Witch Trials 1). Three girls were accused of
witchcraft, and then proceed to blame the whole town of witchcraft (Salem Witch Trials 1).
Bridget Bishop was the first woman hanged in June (Salem Witch Trials 1). Many people denied
witchcraft in Salem (Salem Witch Trials 1). 40,000 to 60,000 people were executed for being
accused of witchcraft (Salem Witch Trials 2). General Court declared a day of fasting for the
tragedy (Salem Witch Trials 1). Thought the respected Minister Cotton Mather had warned of the

Alcohol And Substance Abuse And The National Minimum...
Since alcohol and substance abuse have come into play, along with health issues, and emotional
issues in peoples lives, questions started to arise. One being the legal age to start drinking
alcohol. The national minimum drinking age act was signed on July 17th, 1984 to the law, with
the drinking age at minimum being 21 (Archer M.D.). An adult is any person who s reached the
age of maturity as directed by law (Archer M.D.). Legally, being 18 years old in the U.S. is
considered to be the adult age, but the consumption of alcohol has always been withheld from the
young adults of today, until the age of 21. When you re 18 year old, you can apply for a credit
card, legally marry whoever you may want without parental consent, divorce, rent,... Show more

At the same time, moderate drinking helps lower levels of cholesterol and prevents colds, unless
the drinker smokes tobacco, meaning moderate drinking with care can be seen as not harmful
when done by responsible adults (Pringle). Even though 18 is the adult age in the U.S. 18 19 is
still technically the teenager age and teens are said to be at a more extreme risk than adults
would be to die in a car crash, partially because of alcohol s stronger effects on lighter people
(Pringle). Should 18 be the legal age for alcohol consumption? Although denying young adults to
alcohol may seem unfair, 21 should be the legal age for alcohol consumption in the U.S. rather than
18, because of the overall improved death and health rates shown as the outcome.
Currently in the U.S. the legal drinking age is at 21, an age that many people believe is fair. In the
U.S. more than 25k lives have been saved because of the 21 minimum legal drinking age
(Madd). Although health facts and opinions all have their own facts, the statistics don t lie.
Even with 18 20 year olds legally being accepted as adults, this age group is still more likely to
illegally drink because they re so close to the legal age. But those who start drinking before the
age of 21 are more likely to be involved in violent behaviors, attempt suicide, have unprotected
sex, develop alcoholic problems, and more (Pringle). On top of this, drinking at a young age
greatly increases the risk of developing alcohol

Plastic Bags And Its Effects On The Universe
Nowadays, the use of plastic bags has increased. It can be seemed that plastic bags are really
needed by everyone especially for their daily life. Comparing to the past in the early 1950s when
people still used the paper bags instead of plastic bags. Literally, plastic bags are very useful for

is why the excessive use of plastic bags poses an adverse effect on the universe. Besides, it

plastic bags were consumed.(William T. Fujioka,2008) According to China Trade News, over 1

challenged business situation.
According to our observation, the significant variables in FY 2009 that need further
investigation are (Exhibit 1, 4 and 6): * 0.08 cents reduction in Ice cream price due to
competition * 0.01 cents reduction in specialties price * Lower than planned usage of ingredients
(510 liters lower) for ice cream and 21 liters for specialties (Other ingredients were in 100 grams,
which was converted to liters for the calculation of total ingredients) * Lower labor usage in

Reflection Of The Pearl
The Pearl is a story of a little family that is poor and arrives at riches in the tug of a rope. First,
we have the family Kino, Juana and Coyotito they are a tightly webbed together until the pearl is
found. Then we find that disillusion starts to ensue, due to the pearl and bad luck it brought to
the family. This book reminded me of a quote by Senora Ray from ProGood.me: Even the richest
person can be unsatisfied and even the poorest happy satisfied. All depends upon your ways and
understanding about life and nothing else . Which means that if you have something you want
more, and if you are poor you ll be happy with what you can attain. In this book, there is a lot of
ups and downs but the mechanics of happiness is closely related to this book. At one point
family was the first priority for Kino and Juana. There is a quote by Steinbeck, In Kino s head
there was a song now, clear and soft, and if he had been able to speak of it, he would call it the
song of the family (4). Compared to how Maslow s they were not self actualized, but they
believed they were. The song of the family made them feel happy and fulfilled. They didn t have
any safety or security but they dealt with things how they could. Kino was an uneducated and
ignorant man that didn t even trust his own wife let alone anybody else. Kino could always rely
on Juana to be faithful, reliable. I feel that Juana was one of the only person that trusted him and
praised him, not for his knowledge but just for

Zika Virus Epidemic in South America In South America there is a Zika virus outbreak occurring
that is leading to birth abnormalities and other deformations. Currently, the U.S. Centers for

Obstetricians have issued guidelines concerning pregnant individuals with Zika exposure
(Fiorentino). Among the abnormalities caused by the Zika virus are Guillain BarrГ© syndrome
and microcephaly (an abnormally small cranium which causes malformation of the brain)

First, people can make sure to use a personal protection if choosing to engage in sexual intercourse
(Fiorentino). Along with protection, general abstinence sexual intercourse during the pregnancy is
the greatest option to avoid birth defects (Fiorentino). However, sexual infection can also occur in
areas other than South America from infected males traveling from South America. Therefore,
abstinence is advised for 6 months if a man was proven to have the Zika infection or 8 weeks if a
man traveled to an area with active viral transmission (Fiorentino). Simply by avoiding having
sexual intercourse, couples can greatly reduce the likelihood of birth defects due to an infected
mother. However, other measures have to be taken to slow the disease

b) Why are astronomers using radio telescopes looking for far stars instead of a telescope?
First of all, what is a radio telescope? The first non visual spectral region that was used extensively
for astronomical observations was the radio frequency band. Telescopes observing at these
wavelengths are commonly called radio telescopes. Radio telescopes may be made much larger
than optical/infrared telescopes because the wavelengths of radio waves are much longer than
wavelengths of optical light. A rule of thumb is that the reflecting surface must not have
irregularities larger than about 1/5 the wavelength of light that is being focused. By that criterion a
radio telescope is several hundred thousand times ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The 1000 foot reflector dish, also featured in the James Bond film, quot;Goldeneye, quot; is the
largest stationary radio telescope and most powerful radar in the world. Russell Hulse and Joseph
Taylor of Princeton University earned a Nobel Prize by using the dish in the 1970s to discover the
first pulsar in a binary system, confirming a prediction of Einstein s theory of general relativity.
In the early 1990s, Arecibo was used to detect the first planets outside the solar system. The dish
recently received a facelift in a $27 million upgrade which makes it four times more sensitive to
radio emissions from distant galaxies. The dish was used in the 1960s to chart accurately for the
first time the rate at which the planet Mercury rotates. More recently it studied ice in Mercury s
polar craters, the chemistry of Earth s upper atmosphere and rotating pulsars. The new upgrade will
let astronomers quot;hear quot; signals from much greater distances, and further back in time, than
before.
d) What is VLA? How does it work?
The VLA is an interferometer; this means that it operates by multiplying the data from each pair of
telescopes together to form interference patterns. The structure of those interference patterns, and
how they change with time as the earth rotates, reflect the structure of radio sources on the sky: we
can take these patterns and use a mathematical technique called the Fourier transform to make

Brief Summary Of Survival In Auschwitz By Primo Levi
In Survival in Auschwitz, Primo Levi depicts a life where, under the severe conditions of hunger,
cold, illness, and constant fear, men are transformed into beasts, and where justice and morality
become insignificant in the fight for survival. Upon entering Auschwitz, families are separated and
immediately hundreds are sent to their deaths. Tattooed and given their new identity of serial
numbers, many forget their own past and their names. Initially, Levi accepts his imminent death as
everyone emphasizes that the only exit from Auschwitz is by way of the chimney. But for the next
year, Levi learns to live pragmatically and efficiently under the Nazis continuous brutality. In doing
so, he discovers two very different reactions from living in Auschwitz: those that are saved and
those that are drowned. The drowned rarely exist in normal society, but in Auschwitz, they are
everywhere. For many, the constant cruelty dehumanizes them to the level of animals, where men
accept their fate and work themselves to certain death. Conversely, a few manage to push back and
use their strength, intelligence, and patience to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Friendships were based on pragmatism and selfish interest. Faced with utter solitude, many
prisoners would lose all motivation for survival. Out of the thousands that entered Auschwitz
weekly, only a few hundred would survive. These usually included the most valuable of prisoners,
such as doctors, tailors, and shoemakers. Levi and many other camp veterans understood this and
reacted to make themselves appear useful and not to drown in their detestable conditions. In doing
so, the saved depended on the underground art of economizing on everything, on breath,
movements, even thoughts. In the process, Levi witnesses how this strategy often leads the saved
to social savagery and how the struggle for life is reduced to its primordial

Technology Plays Significant Role Today s Society
Technology plays significant role in today s society. With advances in technology, the market of
smartphones has experienced a significant growth since Apple introduced the iPhone in 2007.
Technological advances have also paved way for wearable devices as the next generation of
mobile technology. A wearable device is a small electronic device which can be worn on the
body so that an individual can freely use it even when moving3. An example of such wearable
technology is a smartwatch. A smartwatch is a computerized device with a touchscreen display,
designed to be worn on the wrist. The first smartwatch, Pulsar, was manufactured in 1972 by
Hamilton Watch Company. Earlier models of the smartwatch like Pulsar performed basic tasks
such as translation and calculations. Smartwatches manufactured in the 21st century like the Sony
Smartwatch 3 and the Apple Watch, are more advanced and can completely function as
standalone products. Most of these smartwatches have a rechargeable battery and a graphical
display with a touchscreen and run on mobile apps using a mobile operating system to carry out
their functions when paired via Bluetooth. When paired with a phone, it allows the watch to
display data such as incoming calls, text messages, emails notifications and any data which may
be made available by relevant phone apps. 2.SONY SMARTWATCH 3 The Sony Smartwatch is a

Message Complexity Paper
Messages How does one determine the meaning of the world around them? It is not all that simple.
Messages are delivered via symbols amongst other factors such as speech, written documents, etc.
They help an individual assign meaning to the society around them. With that, a message can mean
multiple things depending on the listeners and how it is conveyed. In my case, as a Communication
major, I have learned about messages via speechgiving, readings from Communication textbooks,
and in class notes. My public speaking course (Speech 105), is probably the class, within my major,
that taught me the most about delivering messages. For instance, in the class, the first speech
assigned was an impromptu speech. The other students and I had to select... Show more content on

I could stop watching a television show about astronomy and physics, for the reason that I find it
too complex. Even so, outside of the astronomy case, many complex messages can be made
simpler. This is true of a multitude of day to day interactions. Depending on a person s words,
gestures, etc., a whole message can be altered drastically and made up of many layers. The layering
of messages is a concept that was talked about in this Sophomore Seminar class (Communication
295). Much like an onion, messages can have a multitude of layers. Listeners and/or receivers,
depending on the method the message is delivered in, may interpret a message differently.
Interpretation may even depend on combining multiple meanings to construct a final connotation.
Furthermore, the way one understands a message, depends mostly on the way the message is
received to begin

Examining Whether or not the Boston Massacre was a True...
The Merriam Webster online dictionary defines massacre as the act or an instance of killing a
number of usually helpless or unresisting human beings under circumstances of atrocity or cruelty
or a cruel or wanton murder (m w.com). Essentially a massacre results in either the death of many
people or death by cruel means. The Boston Massacreoccurred on March 5, 1770, in Boston,
Massachusetts and involved American colonists and British troops. The colonists, upset by recent
laws enacted by the British, taunted a smaller group of British soldiers by throwing snowballs at
them (Boston Massacre Historical Society). In response, the soldiers fired upon the unarmed
colonists leaving five people dead and six wounded (Phelan, 131). Even... Show more content on

The act also gave customs agents the authority to search property, including the colonists homes.
The colonial response to these acts was increasing violence against the customs officials. In 1768,
the British government sent troops to America to reinforce the Townshend Actsand protect the
customs agents. At one point there were 4,000 British soldiers in a city of only 16,000 people
(Phelan, 24). According to Phelan, there were almost daily confrontations between soldiers and
civilians (38). There was increasing tension between the troops and the American colonists.
Some children as well as adults tormented the troops by throwing snowballs and chunks of ice at
the soldiers. There was also increasing tension between the colonists who were loyal to the
Crown and those who were loyal to the colonies because some store owners broke their
agreements about importing and selling British goods. Children threw trash and rocks at those
storeowners buildings. Several days before the Boston Massacre, one of the loyalist merchants
shot and killed a young man who was a part of group vandalizing his business (Phelan, 44 46).
The colonists tempers flared. By March 5, 1770, only 600 British troops remained in the city
(Zobel, 181). On Monday, March 5, Boston seemed to be holding its breath (Lukes, 32). The

The Quantitative Determination of an Acid in

Methods: Two sodas containing citric acid were investigated in this experiment. Each soda was
titrated using one of the two experimental methods. These methods are the traditional titration and
the modern titration. Carbonic acid was already removed from the soda by boiling it. Both of the
two different titration methods use the same basic set up. Firstly, the buret must be cleaned
thoroughly with tap water. While cleaning the buret, it is also checked to make sure there are no
leaks. The ring stand is then set up with a buret clamp and the cleaned buret placed ... Show more

The device stores the entered data and records it on a chart. This process of titration was
repeated two more times for a total of three accurate titrations. The data stored in the device was
then transferred to a computer and saved. The charts and data collected can be found on the last
page. The volume of NaOH used to reach the equivalence point was calculated for each of the
three titrations. The equivalence point was found graphically. Using the volume of NaOH and the
molarity of NaOH, the moles of NaOH were calculated. Using the volume of the soda used, the
molarity of citric acid was found. Then the mean and standard deviation of the molarity of citric
acid was calculated.
Results:
In the traditional titration, the recorded data is shown in the following chart:
Table 1: | Volume of soda| Volume of NaOH| RatioNaOH:soda| MolesNaOH| MolesCitric acid|
MolarityCitric acid| Titration1| 40.00mL| 19.00mL| .475| 8.85* 10^ 4| 2.95* 10^ 4| 7.375*10^ 3|

  • 2. Similes In Dulce Et Decorum Est Wilfred Owen s poem Dulce et Decorum est shows how harsh and terrible war really was. Owen uses language features such as similes, personification and strong adjectives to make the readers feel pity, disbelief and disgust at the struggles these men went through during the war. Throughout the poem the poet makes the reader feel disgust using violent imagery to show the harsh conditions that the soldiers experienced, and how the war affected them. This is shown when an unlucky soldier is described dying in a gas attack. His comrade sees him dying and describes it by saying ...under a green sea, I saw him drowning, and his face was hanging like a devil s sick of sin . This shows that the soldier is drowning in the gas and has lost control of his face and breathing. This simile disgusts the reader, because we can imagine the soldier drowning in his own fluids while his friends can do nothing but watch helplessly from afar. This helped me understand how scary war can be, as it can cause people to die painfully and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This simile is an example of the imagery that is used very effectively throughout the poem. It helps the reader to imagine and hear troops coughing and swearing as they trudged through the mud. We can imagine the soldiers stumbling along, like knock kneed men that I think would be like old men without canes; and coughing like hags with their croaky voices and rattly breaths. This quote also helps me understand how hard it must be for the soldiers to keep on going because they must be injured and tired, and physically weak like old men would ... • 3. Surrogacy In Australia Essay Australian law reforms have been adequately effective in dealing with surrogacy and birthing technologies. The NSW state reforms have effectively supported the changing values of society by aiming to achieve justice and avoid conflicts surrounding surrogacy, while the commonwealth is obsolete on effective laws to prevent surrogacyissues. As the demand for surrogacy and birthing technologies increases, issues surrounding surrogacy are more prevalent in society. Additionally, there is no Commonwealth law, meaning each state and territory has developed individual laws of surrogacy and birthing technologies, allowing for issues and challenges surrounding the protection and the rights of all parties involved. As society beliefs evolve, so does the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Effective law reform such as The Surrogacy Act 2010 (NSW) has greatly improved the Government responses to issues surrounding Surrogacy. The Act allows for transferral of parentage from the biological mother to the adoptive parents. This allows non legally binding donor agreements to be considers and accepted, achieving justice for both parties involved in the process. By adapting to social values and accepting modern family structure justice is served for society. When the Surrogacy Act was introduced in March 2011, it becomes illegal to enter a commercial surrogacy agreement oversea in NSW, QLD, ACT, with penalties of up to $100000 or 2 years imprisonment. These penalties are seen in the worse interest for the child, as the child could be without their adoptive parents or grow up in economic hardship due to the fines. Although this is effective as it prohibits commercial surrogacy, as it underlines rights and freedoms under the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), this is mirrored into state legislation to protect the child involved. This is highlighted under article 35 of CRC, where states should take measures to prevent sale or trafficking of children for any ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Gempei War Analysis Liam Brownlie Egan F Block 3/29/2018 The Gempei War; a battle of military might, or a political feud? Word Count: 1544 Part I: Introduction The 1180 through 1185 Gempei War between the Japanese Taira and Minamoto clans is often pointed to as an example of the Japanese warrior ethic. The Heike Monogatari traditionally would argue that this is true, however, the reality of the 12th century conflict paints a much different story. Analysis of the war shows that the deciding factors of the war were not necessarily the military strength of the Minamoto, but instead it was a brilliant and lucky political chess game played by Minamoto Yoritomo. Yoritomo was able to develop strategic alliances with local lords across eastern Japan and benefited from... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Imperial Court neglected the many communities and prefectures that make up Japan. This led to many local lords taking matters into their own hands, and establishing virtually autonomous kingdoms each fighting each other for power. When the Gempei War broke out in 1180 Yoritomo pounced on the opportunity to gain overwhelming support. With the establishment of the Kamakura Shogunate, Yoritomo designed a system that would allocate authority to local military leaders that would, in turn, remain loyal to the Shogun. During the Gempei War, Yoritomo offered these positions to military lords across eastern Japan. With this strategy, Yoritomo was able to amass a force that outnumbered that of the Taira. This quote addresses the importance of this fact, the war s larger significance lay in Yoritomo s rechanneling of hostility among provincial warriors. By promising them land and jobs when he won, Yoritomo assured the loyalty of warriors who wanted to topple their regional rivals, (Selinger,4). Had Yoritomo not appealed to these lords, the Taira would have been able to crush his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Lockheed Martin experienced a positive turnaround under new CEO Robert Stevens leadership, and is now entrenched as a leading competitor in the Aerospace and Defense (A amp;D) industry. They maintain an extensive business portfolio and continue to increase shareholder value. However, recent issues with contract mismanagement and cost overruns involving the government F 35 program leave a negative outlook on their operations. They also face increasing pressure to acquire and retain key employees from a diminishing talent pool. Government budget cuts threaten to hurt revenues, thus making it important for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Efficient buildings, where companies such as Lockheed Martin have converted their buildings to be efficient in saving energy, which is a way to cut costs in a declining economic environment, emphasize stewardship of the environment. Europe has enacted a Clean Sky initiative, which is a large research project with the goal of providing a step in environmentally friendly air transport technology. Technology is an important facet in the industry, and therefore has a high emphasis. Cutting edge technology has driven rising costs for consumers. This also causes R amp;D spending to be fairly high. Because of this, Defense companies often seek to find commercial use for new technology. Forecasted Defense trends indicate industry adjustment to reduced government defense spending. Because companies have overlooked operational efficiency and relied heavily on government spending, efficiency will now become a focus with decreased spending. Companies will also attempt to explore new markets, such as Lockheed Martin s secured contract with Israel for future purchase of F 35 s, as well as entering into related markets to diversify revenues. Increased competition is expected due to consolidations among smaller companies in an effort to become more competitive (Thompson). SWOT Analysis Our SWOT (Appendix 3) focuses on the analysis of all components of Lockheed s business and industry and the importance of these factors weights in the IFAS and EFAS. The IFAS score ... • 9. Germination Lab Title: The Effects of Freezing on Germination Rate Introduction: The purpose of this experiment was to discover which species out of three seeds would have the germination rate be the most negatively affected after being frozen for several days. Seed banks store frozen seeds which implied that freezing seeds doesn t cause any major damage to the seeds. However, some species of seeds would probably be more resistant to being frozen than others. Seeds are native to and are grown in many different types of environments some of which are much warmer and colder than others so there seemed to be a possibility that plants from colder environments would produce seeds less susceptible to damage from low temperatures. Experimental Question: How does ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There were also procedural problems including imprecise measurement of the water at the beginning of the setup, inconsistent seed placement on the paper towels and irregular times at which the seeds were observed and watered. Also, the seeds were placed very close together which resulted in roots growing over into other paper towels and the faster spread of mold. This mold, which began growing on some of the seeds within a few days, was a major factor. Because the mold began to spread to other seeds and because none of the seeds sprouted after mold had grown, the moldy seeds probably should have been removed. • 10. Roles Of Women In The Arabian Nights Bryanna Samuels Dr. Collins Western Heritage 105 01 11 19 2017 The Arabian Nights Men have always been and most likely are the leaders of their families. Men are always supposed to be strong and fend for themselves, and always take care of the women and the children. In this case though, things are rather switched around. In the Arabian Nights, women play a very empowering role. It seems that in most cases the women are equal to the men and play the same roles as the men in Arabian Nights. The stories in Arabian Nights give a different insight as to what was going on during this time. The women were not valued as much as they should have been, they were often punished for not being as womanly as the man would like them to be. • 11. The Columbian Exchange, Cons, And The Impacts Of The... In 1492, Columbus and his crew disembarked three ships: The Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. He and his crew were kindly welcomed by the foreign men and women he thought to be the Indians of Asia. However, about two thousand years earlier, a group of Viking explorers discovered the land and stayed there for a few years, before returning to Greenland. Although Columbus did not discover this foreign land, he was responsible for the changes that soon followed his voyage. These changes, referred to as the Columbian Exchange, altered the way the natives lived, traded, hunted, and fought amongst other tribes. It also led to undesirable effects for the tribes, as a result of the introduction of new diseases, slave labor, and advanced weaponry. From first contact, the foreign Europeans forced the natives into quickly and radically adapting to the new threats they faced and learning how to use the newly introduced products the Europeans carried over to the New World. As the Europeans started arriving to the distant continent, disease was an invisible menace to the natives. Although the Native American population was not aware of the diseases the European men carried, the viruses decimated villages and quickly spread to faraway lands from the minor exchange between village traders. The European explorers brought smallpox, influenza, typhus, measles, malaria, and diphtheria into the new land, all of which the native population had no immunity towards. This introduction ... He evens admits to brainwashing his readers just for the sake of what he called an exercise in linguistic programming. Without even realizing it, the readers of A Clockwork Orange were Burgess guinea pigs. It was, however, a successful experiment. It states, In his face there are already the strained lines that we know so well, we have seen them hundreds of times. They are not so much lines as marks. Under the skin the life no longer pulses, it has already pressed out the boundaries of the body. (Remarque, 14). Kemmerich s death mainly affects Baumer because it is the first time he had seen a dear friend traumatized by the effects of the war. He is concerned about Kemmerich but the nurses and orderlies don t seem to care too much about the patients as they just want to clear Kemmerich s bed for another wounded soldier. It states, Hospital orderlies go to and fro with bottles and pails. One of them comes up, casts a glance at Kemmerich and goes away again. You can see he is waiting, apparently, he wants the bed. (Remarque, 30). This emphasizes the unprofessionalism and how unequipped the army was in tending to the needs of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. Child Rearing Problems Around Both Detachment And... child rearing problems around both detachment and attachment. Children of Holocaust survivors may be assumed to have taken the emotional states and behaviors of their parents. As such, children who are born to traumatized Holocaust survivors would be predisposed to PTSD (Kellermann, 264). Other evidence regarding intergenerational transmission of trauma suggests that survivors have been affected to different degrees by trauma and share a psychological syndrome referred to as Concentration Camp Syndrome (Last, 72). Last describes CSS as a relatively fixed, lifelong condition characterized by various combinations of a wide range of symptoms that are usually regarded as psychopathological and can be traced to Holocaust experiences. These include lasting depression; anxiety, emotional ability, irritability, and restlessness; nightmares; a sense depletion, of despair and alienation; obsessional ruminations; guilt feelings; failing memory and difficulties in concentration; fatigue; a a variety of psychosomatic complaints (Last, 75). While some therapists believe that the concept of second generation is in fact a fallacy, others conclude that it is rather impossible to grow up in a family with Holocaust survivors and not absorb some of the trauma of parents and other family members. PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder has been used to characterize the trauma of Holocaust and Armenian Genocidesurvivors. The term is defined by autonomic hyperarousal, intrusive recurrence, ... Web Portal Design Web portals in the past were seen primarily as gateways as was stated earlier, thereby limiting the creative control administrators could have over the design of the web site. Due to the shift in functionality of web portals however, as well as the added value of UCC, it has become increasingly challenging to design web sites where users can find exactly what they are looking for (Fang, et al, 2004). Prominent gaming portals IGN (Fox Media, 1996), and Gamespot (Deemer, et al, 1996), display the attributes of good web design, limiting the amount of useless hyperlinks, and utilises taxonomy for articles to make them easier for users to access the information they need. Gamespot also allows for a degree of personalisation within the site allowing users to select which background and forum theme they wish to use, whose selection will be stored with the user account information, and this personalisation can help the users feel connected to the portal, thereby ensuring their continued presence (Bellas, et al, 2004). Although the Salem Witch Trials and the Holocaust were very different, they were both led by misguided judgements of what makes people different. They both consisted of many tragedies such as false accusation, killing innocent people, and lots of death. The Salem Witch Trials began in 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts (Salem Witch Trials 1). Three girls were accused of witchcraft, and then proceed to blame the whole town of witchcraft (Salem Witch Trials 1). Bridget Bishop was the first woman hanged in June (Salem Witch Trials 1). Many people denied witchcraft in Salem (Salem Witch Trials 1). 40,000 to 60,000 people were executed for being accused of witchcraft (Salem Witch Trials 2). Since alcohol and substance abuse have come into play, along with health issues, and emotional issues in peoples lives, questions started to arise. One being the legal age to start drinking alcohol. The national minimum drinking age act was signed on July 17th, 1984 to the law, with the drinking age at minimum being 21 (Archer M.D.). An adult is any person who s reached the age of maturity as directed by law (Archer M.D.). Legally, being 18 years old in the U.S. is considered to be the adult age, but the consumption of alcohol has always been withheld from the young adults of today, until the age of 21. At the same time, moderate drinking helps lower levels of cholesterol and prevents colds, unless the drinker smokes tobacco, meaning moderate drinking with care can be seen as not harmful when done by responsible adults (Pringle). Even though 18 is the adult age in the U.S. 18 19 is still technically the teenager age and teens are said to be at a more extreme risk than adults would be to die in a car crash, partially because of alcohol s stronger effects on lighter people (Pringle). Should 18 be the legal age for alcohol consumption? Although denying young adults to alcohol may seem unfair, 21 should be the legal age for alcohol consumption in the U.S. rather than 18, because of the overall improved death and health rates shown as the outcome. Currently in the U.S. the legal drinking age is at 21, an age that many people believe is fair. In the U.S. more than 25k lives have been saved because of the 21 minimum legal drinking age (Madd). Although health facts and opinions all have their own facts, the statistics don t lie. Even with 18 20 year olds legally being accepted as adults, this age group is still more likely to illegally drink because they re so close to the legal age. But those who start drinking before the age of 21 are more likely to be involved in violent behaviors, attempt suicide, have unprotected sex, develop alcoholic problems, and more (Pringle). Radio telescopes may be made much larger than optical/infrared telescopes because the wavelengths of radio waves are much longer than wavelengths of optical light. Brief Summary Of Survival In Auschwitz By Primo Levi In Survival in Auschwitz, Primo Levi depicts a life where, under the severe conditions of hunger, cold, illness, and constant fear, men are transformed into beasts, and where justice and morality become insignificant in the fight for survival. Upon entering Auschwitz, families are separated and immediately hundreds are sent to their deaths. Tattooed and given their new identity of serial numbers, many forget their own past and their names. Initially, Levi accepts his imminent death as everyone emphasizes that the only exit from Auschwitz is by way of the chimney. But for the next year, Levi learns to live pragmatically and efficiently under the Nazis continuous brutality. In doing so, he discovers two very different reactions from living in Auschwitz: those that are saved and those that are drowned. The drowned rarely exist in normal society, but in Auschwitz, they are everywhere. • 51. Message Complexity Paper Messages How does one determine the meaning of the world around them? It is not all that simple. Messages are delivered via symbols amongst other factors such as speech, written documents, etc. They help an individual assign meaning to the society around them. With that, a message can mean multiple things depending on the listeners and how it is conveyed. In my case, as a Communication major, I have learned about messages via speechgiving, readings from Communication textbooks, and in class notes. My public speaking course (Speech 105), is probably the class, within my major, that taught me the most about delivering messages. For instance, in the class, the first speech assigned was an impromptu speech. The other students and I had to select... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I could stop watching a television show about astronomy and physics, for the reason that I find it too complex. Even so, outside of the astronomy case, many complex messages can be made simpler. This is true of a multitude of day to day interactions. Depending on a person s words, gestures, etc., a whole message can be altered drastically and made up of many layers. The layering of messages is a concept that was talked about in this Sophomore Seminar class (Communication 295). Much like an onion, messages can have a multitude of layers. Listeners and/or receivers, depending on the method the message is delivered in, may interpret a message differently. Interpretation may even depend on combining multiple meanings to construct a final connotation. Furthermore, the way one understands a message, depends mostly on the way the message is received to begin ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 52. Examining Whether or not the Boston Massacre was a True... The Merriam Webster online dictionary defines massacre as the act or an instance of killing a number of usually helpless or unresisting human beings under circumstances of atrocity or cruelty or a cruel or wanton murder (m w.com). Essentially a massacre results in either the death of many people or death by cruel means. The Boston Massacreoccurred on March 5, 1770, in Boston, Massachusetts and involved American colonists and British troops. The colonists, upset by recent laws enacted by the British, taunted a smaller group of British soldiers by throwing snowballs at them (Boston Massacre Historical Society). In response, the soldiers fired upon the unarmed colonists leaving five people dead and six wounded (Phelan, 131). Even... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The act also gave customs agents the authority to search property, including the colonists homes. The colonial response to these acts was increasing violence against the customs officials. In 1768, the British government sent troops to America to reinforce the Townshend Actsand protect the customs agents. At one point there were 4,000 British soldiers in a city of only 16,000 people (Phelan, 24). According to Phelan, there were almost daily confrontations between soldiers and civilians (38). There was increasing tension between the troops and the American colonists. Some children as well as adults tormented the troops by throwing snowballs and chunks of ice at the soldiers. There was also increasing tension between the colonists who were loyal to the Crown and those who were loyal to the colonies because some store owners broke their agreements about importing and selling British goods. Children threw trash and rocks at those storeowners buildings. Several days before the Boston Massacre, one of the loyalist merchants shot and killed a young man who was a part of group vandalizing his business (Phelan, 44 46). The colonists tempers flared. By March 5, 1770, only 600 British troops remained in the city (Zobel, 181). On Monday, March 5, Boston seemed to be holding its breath (Lukes, 32). The friction between ... • 53. Essay on Acid in Soda Experiment 5 The Quantitative Determination of an Acid in Carbonated Beverages Thomas Canfield Kelly Caddell Chemistry 144B T.A. Brock Marvin 15 October 2012 Methods: Two sodas containing citric acid were investigated in this experiment. Each soda was titrated using one of the two experimental methods. These methods are the traditional titration and the modern titration. Carbonic acid was already removed from the soda by boiling it. Both of the two different titration methods use the same basic set up. Firstly, the buret must be cleaned thoroughly with tap water. While cleaning the buret, it is also checked to make sure there are no leaks. The ring stand is then set up with a buret clamp and the cleaned buret placed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The device stores the entered data and records it on a chart. This process of titration was repeated two more times for a total of three accurate titrations. The data stored in the device was then transferred to a computer and saved. The charts and data collected can be found on the last page. The volume of NaOH used to reach the equivalence point was calculated for each of the three titrations. The equivalence point was found graphically. Using the volume of NaOH and the molarity of NaOH, the moles of NaOH were calculated. Using the volume of the soda used, the molarity of citric acid was found. Then the mean and standard deviation of the molarity of citric acid was calculated. Results: In the traditional titration, the recorded data is shown in the following chart: Table 1: | Volume of soda| Volume of NaOH| RatioNaOH:soda| MolesNaOH| MolesCitric acid| MolarityCitric acid| Titration1| 40.00mL| 19.00mL| .475| 8.85* 10^ 4| 2.95* 10^ 4| 7.375*10^ 3| Titration2| 40.00mL| 19.00mL| .466| 8.85* 10^ 4| 2.95* 10^ 4| 7.23*10^ 3| Titration3| 40.80mL| 19.00mL| .469| 8.85* 10^ 4| 2.95* 10^ 4| 7.28*10^ 3| Titration4| 40.10mL| 19.02mL| .474| 8.86* 10^ 4| 2.95* 10^ 4| 7.36*10^ 3| From the data in Table 1, the mean and standard deviation was calculated for the molarity of citric acid: Mean molarity of citric acid: 7.31*10^ 3 Standard Deviation: 6.837*10^ 5 In the modern titration, the recorded data is shown for the
