Syrian Civil War Essay
ECPSC 2013
CURRENT AFFAIRS HANDOUT 11
SYRIAN CIVIL WAR
Gen
1. The Syrian civil war also commonly known as the Syrian uprising is an ongoing armed conflict in
Syria between forces loyal to the Syrian Baath Party government and those seeking to oust it. The
conflict began on 15 March 2011, with popular demonstrations that grew nationwide by April 2011.
These demonstrations were part of the wider Middle Eastern protest movement known as the Arab
Spring. Protesters demanded the resignation of President Bashar al Assad, whose family has held the
presidency in Syria since 1971, as well as the end to over four decades of Baath Party rule. In April
2011, the Syrian Army was deployed to quell the uprising. After months of military sieges, the ...

an estimated 12 percent of the total Syrian population generating resentment among some Sunni
Muslims, a sect that makes up about three quarters of Syria s population.

World Opinion
6. The Arab League, United States, European Union, Arab States of the Persian Gulf, and other
countries condemned the use of violence against the protesters. The Arab League suspended Syria s
membership because of the government s response to the crisis, but granted the Syrian National
Coalition, Syria s seat on 6 March 2013. The Arab League also sent an observer mission in December
2011, as part of its proposal for peaceful resolution of the crisis.
7. A further attempt to resolve the crisis was made through the appointment of Kofi Annan as a special
envoy. On 15 July 2012, the International Committee of the Red Cross assessed the Syrian conflict as
a non international armed conflict (the ICRC s legal term for civil war), thus applying international
humanitarian law under the Geneva Conventions to Syria.
Current Situation
8. On 2 January 2013, the United Nations stated that the war s death toll had exceeded 60,000; on 12
February, this figure was updated to 70,000. According to various opposition activist groups, between
62,550 and 74,470 people have been killed, of which about half were civilians, and also included

Essay on Geographic Technology in Real Estate
Geographic Technology in Real Estate:
A Technology Assessment Report
Introduction
Real estate is defined by the Barron s Dictionary of Real Estate Terms as the land and everything more
or less attached to it. Ownership below to the center of the earth and above to the heavens. This
definition clearly conveys the geographically fixed nature of real estate and the inherent risk
associated with this characteristic that is not found in other financial assets such as stocks and bonds.
It is the identification and quantification of these risks that dominates the real estate decision.

The lender is also concerned with the strength of the particular market where a prospective borrower
is located when underwriting a loan. Markets with declining economic health can lead to a situation
where the borrower is no longer capable of paying the monthly mortgage payment. Under this
scenario, a lender will likely acquire the property through foreclosure and subsequently sell it for an
amount that is hopefully equal to the outstanding loan balance. Should the sale price be less than the
outstanding loan balance due to weakening market fundamentals, the lender again suffers a loss.
The scenarios presented above suggest that commercial lending institutions have a need for GIS as a
risk management tool during the underwriting process as well as after a loan has been originated. An
analysis of ESRI and MapInfo GIS risk management products was conducted as these two vendors
have the most advanced GIS software geared toward the business community. Care has been taken not
to include substantial discussion of each vendor s market analysis software (which is used extensively
in the mortgage underwriting process) in the commercial lending section as this will be the focus of
the site selection component of the paper.
From a pure risk management perspective, MapInfo is more advanced than ESRI. Currently, MapInfo
has three products that focus on the analysis of risk from the perspective of property insurance
providers. Although

William Shakespeare Hamlet Research Paper
William Shakespeare s play called, Hamlet has been performed on stage numerous times and adapted
into many films over time. Some actors and directors capture the true essence of Shakespeare s
Hamlet, while others prefer to make parody films of Hamlet by poking fun at Hamlet s family, friends
and even himself. Although, there are many film adaptions of William Shakespeare s Hamlet, what s
unique about the different film versions of Hamlet is the unique alterations directors and actors make
in each film adaption of Hamlet, although given the same play. Three main versions of Hamlet, the
classic, staring and directed by Laurence Olivier, the 1990 version starring Mel Gibson and directed
by Franco Zeffirelli and the unforgettable 1996 version

Copper Life Cycle Essay
Copper is a metal that has been used by humans essentially since the beginning of existence as it is
said to be only the second metal used by man after gold. Therefore, copper production has been an
important part of life for thousands or years and still is today. The copper cycle is an important
because it provides a basis for how copper can be recovered from various compounds that it exists in
during its so called life cycle . The life cycle of copper conserves this now scarce metal by allowing
the recovery of the pure substance at any point through experimental means. While copper is much

Reaction one was an exothermic reaction. This was determined simply because when nitric acid was
mixed with the copper wire a significant amount of heat was given off to the surroundings, therefore
the reaction had to be exothermic. Reaction two was exothermic as well. This was determined because
precipitation reactions are always exothermic as the formation of a solid is a decrease in entropy so
delta S is negative which means that enthalpy would be negative, therefore it is an exothermic
reaction. Reaction three is an endothermic reaction. This was determined simply because a
decomposition reaction is carried out through the addition of energy, usually heat to break down a
compound, therefore the addition of heat to carry out to the reaction means it has to be endothermic.
Reaction four was exothermic. This was determined because it was an acid base neutralization
reaction. Acid base neutralization reactions are always exothermic as they release heat from the
system to the surroundings. Reaction five was endothermic. This was determined because the reaction
sped up when heated. The reduction of Copper Sulfate to Copper occurred at room temperate when
Hydrochloric Acid and Aluminum were combined. However, when the beaker was put on a hot plate
the reaction occurred noticeably faster therefore indicating that it

Inductive Argument
In the first part of the assignment we were asked to identify components of arguments, premise and
conclusion, for the passages. Where applicable we are to highlight key words or phrases that identify a
claim as a premise or a conclusion. A premise is the support for the conclusion. (Missimer, 2005) The
first example has several premises as follows if Sue s baby is a boy it will be named Mark and if it is a
girl it will be named Margaret. Another premise is that Sue will have a boy or girl. So is a keyword
indicating the conclusion that Sue s baby will be named Mark or Margaret. In the next example,
because is a keyword in the premise and indicates that the conclusion has preceded and a reason will
follow. This premise is that fantasy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the last part of the assignment we are asked to identify the arguments as inductive or deductive. An
argument is said to be deductive if its conclusion is claimed to necessarily follow the premise. An
inductive argument claims only that its conclusion probably follows from its premises. That is, the
inferential claim is that since the premises are true or acceptable, the conclusion is likely to be true or
acceptable. (Missimer, 2005) The first and second examples are inductive because even though the
premises may be true, it is still possible for the conclusion to be false. They will then have to be
looked at to see if they are strong or weak and if all premises are true or if one or more is false. We can
then determine if the argument is reliable or unreliable. The third example is a deductive argument if
we go by the definition above. If the premises are true then it simply isn t possible for the conclusion
to be false. If you have a deductive argument and you accept the truth of the premises, then you must
also accept the truth of the conclusion; if you deny it, then you are denying logic

Darwin begat the term natural selection to depict the procedure by which organisms with ideal
variations survive and duplicate at a higher rate. An inherited variation that expands an organism s
shot of survival in a specific domain is called an adjustment. Over numerous eras, an adjustment could
spread all through the whole species. Along these lines, as indicated by Darwin, advancement by
natural selection would happen. So Darwin plainly and consistently introduced the thought that natural

Uber s driverless car is a new step on auto history. People hold different view about the driverless car.
Some of them think it is a great invention because it could help a city to change its stereotyped image,
like the mayor of Pittsburgh(2016, Kang). At the same time, the regular cars have many issues caused
by Uber s drivers, such as assaulting/harassing female customers, even kidnapping (2014, PICCHI).
S[BT2] urely, pessimists opine driverless cars do not have human s moral rules to judge various

Ebsco Describes Itself As ‘The Leading Discovery Service
EBSCO describes itself as the leading discovery service provider for libraries worldwide with more

A quick keyword search using the term business brought up 8,952,111 results as you can see in the
accompanying screenshot. The impressive date range stretches from the year 1644 to 2016. This is of
course too much information to sort through but on the left hand side of the page, EBSCO offers a
range of refining features to narrow your search term. However not all of the refining features work as
they should. For example, the geography filter is not the most accurate, there is uncertainty if
geography is categorised by topic, publisher or author. Furthermore when a geographical location is
selected, the results are inaccurate, although this is mainly because the databases which EBSCO
searches through do not always accurately define the article s location. (EBSCO Host, 2016)
One of the advantages of this platform is its thesaurus and predictive search terms which allow you to
search at ease. Other databases for example Passport are only capable of searching an exact phrase in
an exact term. EBSCO Host manages to predict your search, or similar searches which helps those
who may lack confidence. EBSCO states that its neutral relevance ranking strategy uses numerous
criteria, including term frequency, field weighting, exact title matching and content attribute boosting,
to provide users with the most relevant results for each query (Kelley, 2013). I feel that this is
something that EBSCO Host does successfully. Each search I

The cell theory proposes that all organisms are composed of cells and hence cells are the fundamental
unit of all life. Human cells are typically 5 to 100 µm in size and therefore cannot be viewed without
the use of a microscope [1]. They are, however, extremely organized, being responsible for the
biochemical processes that are essential to sustain the life of an organism. Cells are compartmentalised
in order to increase the efficiency of the biochemical processes as well as protect the genetic
information. Such compartments are called organelles which are each bound by their own membrane
and each serve a specialised function. Humans are made up of trillions of

A Meeting At The First Congregational Church
I went to an AA meeting at the First Congregational Church in New London, Connecticut on Monday
February 22, at 7 pm. It was located in a larger room in the basement of the church. There were
around fifteen members that attended. The individual s came from an array of different ages and
ethnicities, both men and woman. There was no one race or ethnicity that dominated another in the
meeting, it was a very warm, accepting atmosphere. I noticed right away that there was more young
adults around the age of thirty than elderly members. There was also around the same number of
males and females in attendance. The meeting began with the appointed leader asking if there were
any new members in the group, and gave them a chance to introduce themselves. I also introduced
myself at this time, and explained my role as a student. They then transitioned into reciting the
serenity prayer and having a moment of silence, allowing them to give thanks to their higher power.
The leader then had different individuals recite the week s motivational phrase and reflect on the
quote. The quote talked about forgiving yourself as an alcoholic, and the concept of letting go of the
guilt that they have over hurting themselves and the people that they love when they were under the
influence. This topic was very triggering for the members, and lead them into a very power discussion
around the different people in their lives that were directly affected by their drinking. One woman

good historically over the last 60 years in London. The first production of the play was in 1952,
London s West End. Under the direction of Playwright Agatha Christine, Eric C. Skiles the director,
directed a great cast of actors. Who brought out humorous and suspenseful moments through out the
production. They also kept everybody on their toes till towards the end. The main point of the play

This production did have some theme music to it in the beginning before the lights cut on. The actors
would blare different types a music on stage but other than that it was pretty quite. Music would come
on at random times during the play. Sometimes the actors would play rock loudly or classical music.
The only sound that was consistently going on was actors talking. There was also sound when Mrs.
Boyle died by making loud stomping noises. The sound was still successful during the play because it
gave parts of the play life. There were a lot of great acting moments during this production I enjoyed. I
loved Detective Sergeant Trotter performance the most. He brought the most passion to his character
throughout the whole entire of play. Even though when we thought he was the most innocent person
during the play. Another character I liked was Mollie Ralston because her role was questionable at
times. Sometimes you wonder if she was innocent, guilty, or should be the next victim to die. The
funniest actor was Christopher Wren because of his hilarious moments. People in the audience would
laugh with he had a goofy line to say. The things I couldn t enjoy is a couple of actors who weren t
understandable. These characters were Giles Ralston and Mr. Paravicini because of their accents they
had to betray. If they could of spoke louder, the performances would of been better. One thing the
actors should of not done was turn their backs to audience. We couldn t see there face half of the

11SOR Multimodal Presentation
From its creation in the late 20th century the internet has become a part of our everyday lives. In
Catholicism, Confession is a very important ritual for the forgiveness of sins. Now that society is
evolving onto the online world, so are the rituals and practices of the Catholic Church. I believe an
online Confession app has the authenticity of an offline one, but lacks the effectiveness of the

dimensions collaborate with each other to form the basis on which a ritual lies. In the Catholic
sacrament of confession, these dimensions all play an important part which contributes to the outcome
of the ritual. The Doctrinal and Philosophical dimension describes the dimension which incorporates
the intellectual components of religions. The Narrative or Mythological dimension is the dimension

The Development Process In Human Development
The development process in Human Development begins in before conception with heredity. The next
important stage in development is prenatal development. The is the stage of growth after conception
and before birth. In this stage, there are many risk factors to consider that can affect the development
of an embryo either during the pregnancy or after the pregnancy. A very well known risk factor during
this time is smoking, drink and the use of drugs. Teratogen is the different agents such as, drug,
alcohol, and tobacco that can cause different development problems at birth. I conducted a research
experiment to see how women felt about these activities they partake in, and if they know the danger it
producing toward the normal development of a fetus. In the following paragraphs, I will discuss how I
conducted this experiment, and what my finding produced about the matter. Process:
The first and hardest part of this experiment was finding women friend of mine that did not have
children already and used drugs, alcohol, or tobacco. I don t have many women friends that don t have

To hike the PCT, one would need to have three things: experience of hiking, knowledge of survival,
and the drive to continue forward. When Cheryl set foot on the trail, she knew nothing of hiking
besides a few basic skills she was taught by her step father. She suffered from her lack of knowledge
until she met these three people. One of these characters was an elderly man named Albert. His role as
mentor was brief yet the one of the most notable throughout Cheryl s journey. Albert is a seasoned
hiker who Cheryl met on the way to her first checkpoint. At first he teased her about the size of her

American Heart Association
Although the Western States Affiliate s (WSA s) organizational model successfully increased
fundraising revenue for the American Heart Association (AHA), the task force s initiative to adopt this
structure and strategy at a national level indicates a lack of understanding of the AHA s overall vision
and business strategy. If the AHA wishes to achieve even greater success while continuing to maintain
its long standing strategy of raising funds for research and community education, it should focus on
developing a hybrid organizational structure, improving operational efficiency and strengthening its
community participation. While the new WSA organizational structure proved successful in increasing
fundraising revenues, certain design ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By improving operational efficiency, AHA will be able to achieve greater long term success. The AHA
would benefit from multiple lateral processes that would help execute on its strategic vision as well as
day to day operations. An American Heart Walk event in Texas, for example, would use the WSA s
model with a specialized CED overseeing event execution, but prior to that, EVPs and SVPs from
several regions, by nature of their dual responsibility structure, would leverage the knowledge gained
from AHW events across the entire country. At the same time, the community liaison, a new addition
to the local office, would also benefit from the strategic coordination across all AHW events and
would better represent the common vision and goals of the AHA. A second lateral process that
promotes operational efficiency is e coordination. A central repository of volunteers, donors, event
planning specifics and a detailed community profile will be a very valuable asset to the AHA. For
example, having information on the fund raising and educational programs that were successful in an
affluent community in one geographical region will provide focus when pursuing a similar community
in another part of the country. Collaboration with local organizations also becomes easier when pre

Malcolm X Thesis
No man in our time aroused fear and hatred in the white man as did Malcolm, because in him the
white man sense an implacable foe who could not be had for any price a man unreservedly committed
to the cause of liberating the black man in American society rather than integrating the black man into
that society. (Haley XXV)
Without a doubt Malcolm X was one of the most brilliantly moving speakers that has ever lived. His
strong voice and commanding presence paired with his wit and sheer intelligence brought a people to
their feet and struck fear in the hearts of a nation. Malcolm X excited and inspired a passive people to
take a stand for real. Malcom X was an essential historical figure. The black community needed

Malcolm was not a black supremacist and was not racist towards whites. In his speech The Ballot or
the Bullet given on April 3, 1964 in Cleveland, OH, Malcolm explained, Now in speaking like this, it
doesn t mean that we re anti white, but it does mean we re anti exploitation, we re anti degradation, we
re anti oppression. And if the white man doesn t want us to be anti him, let him stop oppressing and
exploiting and degrading us.
Why would anyone feel comfortable living in a society integrated with the people who instilled in
them the belief that they were subpar and actually taught them to hate themselves?
Hardships can pull people apart, but Malcolm found that common factor that unified people to come
together. He made them realize that they all came from the same place and had the same struggles, and
that is what brought them together. The only thing that all blacks in America had in common was the
fact that none of their black ancestors originated in the United States. They had all been brought from
Africa in one way or

Tone And Mood In Sailing To Byzantium
Tone and Mood in Sailing to Byzantium
Images How do the images listed on the left influence the tone or mood of this poem? Consider the
author s attitude towards the physical body, aging, and nature as opposed to his position on intellect,
art, immortalization, and artificiality.
The young
In one another s arms, birds in the trees
Those dying generations at their song, This section of the poem is one that gives a very sad and
depressing tone. The section states that death is inevitable and everyone will face it. The tone sets a
mood that is thoughtful. It really makes the reader step back and reflect on life. This can be shown by
the author s rather sadden view on aging.
An aged man is but a paltry thing,
A tattered coat upon a stick.
This part sets an intense and harsh tone in a way. The harsh tone incorporated into this section gives
the reader a sense of disappointment and sadness. This statement is meant to be a very stern one so
readers can realize that aging isn t a great thing, or at least the author thinks so. I think the author is
reflecting on himself aging and is afraid that he is becoming one step closer to dying and maybe even
being forgotten.
Consume my heart away; sick with desire
And fastened to a dying animal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The poem is again talking about mortality and aging. Just as the part above, you can tell that the
author doesn t want to age. To the author, aging is a horrible thing and he fears it, which makes the
reader feel sad and remorseful towards the author. I think this part of the poem really shines on the
idea that once you get older people start thinking about you less and less. People always pay most
attention to the youngest ones in a family. For example: things such as a newborn baby, a kid s first
day of school, high school graduation, prom, and even marriage seem to be more important than an

The Uncanny Valley And Visual Expertise
Introduction The uncanny valley is a phenomenon that occurs when we see human like beings and we
notice that they have or are missing some human features. The realization that they are missing human
features causes negative feelings of unease. In this paper I will first describe the uncanny valley.
MacDorman Cattopadhyay (2016) provide an interesting explanation as to why it can occur and how
the effect can be influenced. MacDorman Cattopadhyay (2016) suggests that eeriness of the uncanny
valley is not because of how eerie they look. Rather, it depends on how human like they are. Then, I
will describe visual expertise. Visual expertise in this sense refers to our ability to identify faces and
other objects that we have experience in perceiving. That experience is used to make top down
assumptions about what faces and their features should look like. Harel (2016) looks at visual
expertise, where it works, and how it works. Lastly, I will describe the relationship between the
uncanny valley and visual expertise. Kätsyri, Förger, Mäkäräinen, Takala (2015) provide an argument
in their surveying that can explain the relationship. They suggest that a possible explanation is that the
visual expertise that we have with facial recognition perceives featural differences in an artificial
human like face. The difference elicit that eerie response because we see something that does look
human like, but we identify as not being human.

Gang Violence And The United States
Gangs have been a part of American culture in the United States since the early 19th century when
immigrant youth organized themselves into street gangs as a means of urban and economic survival.
Today, gang violence has reached an almost catastrophic level in the United States. Criminal street
gangs have become one of the most serious crime problems in California. Gang violence accounts for
one of the largest personal threats to public safety for nearly all the cities in this state. Salinas,
California is a relatively small Central Coast agricultural town with a population of just over 150,000.
The City of Salinas has been dealing with gang and youth violence for over 50 years. Salinas gang
homicide victims are among the youngest in the state. Over the past few years, youth gang
involvement in Salinas has reached a critical level and gang related homicides are at an all time high.
Youth gang violence is a social problem that not only affects the individual, but the community as a
whole. While there has been an increase of gang related issues lately, it is certainly not an unfamiliar
or current problem for Salinas. The violent crime associated with organized street gangs has a well
recognized and extensive history in the Salinas Valley. Youth are at the heart of gang violence as both
perpetrators and victims. A recent study concluded that Monterey County ranked number one in
homicide victimization for youth between the ages of 10 24 in California for the years 2009 and

Analyzing Hector s Response To Andromache
Your wife is always right is a hyperbolic expression quoted by the actor Hugh Jackman. While
certainly not always the case, Hector could benefit greatly from considering this piece of advice.
Andromache offers Hector a piece of strategic advice for the war, which he brushes off and response
very harshly to. Hector s response offers a glimpse of a side of Hector that is not previously seen in
the book before. Hector s answer to Andromache is a grim and dismal outlook of what Hector sees for
the future. The advice she offers to Hector is to take the army and fight behind the walls of Troy. Her
logic is: three times the Greeks have attacked under the walls, and three times they have failed.
Fighting an open battle has proven to be disadvantageous to the Trojans and she believes the best her
strategy is the best ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Realizing Hector s opposition lies not in the semantics of the plan, but in the principles he stands for, I
would change my argument to challenge those very conventions. Since Hector never once mentions
the importance the survival of his wife and son, I would question his loyalty to his family and his role
as a father. The text shows Hector cares for his wife and especially his son Astyanax. I would verbally
confront him on the idea that it is clear he places his own glory over his family. The nobility of
condemning his wife and infant child to a life of slavery is certainly less noble than doing whatever it
takes to protect them. In fact, Hector is jeopardizing the lives not only of his family, but of his people
as well. I would ask him what kind of leader ignores the survival of his people in pursuit of his own
glory. By confronting Hector s principles and idea of nobility, I have addressed the root of his
opposition to my plan. Even if he does not accept the argument, his basic way of life is challenged and
he must question the rationale of his

Helen Keller Metaphor
Helen Keller, who was born on June 27th, 1880 and died June 1st, 1968, was one of the most
important people of her time. She accomplished so much in fields such as literature and politics. The
fact that she was able to do so much with her life is impressive not only in the fact that she was a
woman, but more impressive due to the fact that she became blind and deaf at only eighteen months
old. Through the help of Anne Sullivan though, Keller, was able to learn so much. This short story,
The Day Language Came into My Life, is an excerpt from her autobiography, where she recalls her
memories from when she first learned about language. In her story, Keller, uses a unique metaphor to
describe what it was like going from no language to having a language. She does this by comparing
herself to a boat in a dense fog with no compass or sounding line, who was just lost at sea in a tangible
darkness, and then the light came into her world. This light that meant so much to Keller was the love
of her teacher, Anne Sullivan. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the most prominent examples is when she smashes the doll on the ground because she had not
loved the doll because in that world she had not known love. Later in the story though after she has
learned of love she goes back to the doll she has destroyed and for the first time feels sorrow. The doll
represents Keller and how before the light comes she is angry and broken but then after the light she
feels more complete, even though the doll doesn t get fixed completely. One other example is the time
when she feels water and learns what it is called, and suddenly feels awakened, hopeful, and even free.
All in all, Helen Keller s use of metaphor is very effective in describing her experience. Through her
metaphor she conveys how language and love come into her life and push out all of the fog and
completely change her world for the better, giving her hope, happiness, and the feeling of

The Shareholders Of Aspen Pharmacare Holdings Ltd
Earnings per share (also called net income per share) is a ratio that measures net income earned per
share of stock outstanding, and is the money each share of stock would receive if all of the profits
were distributed to the outstanding shares at year end. The higher the EPS, the better the business is as
an investment from a shareholders perspective. EPS could be due to an increase in profit or a decrease
in the number of shares in issue, which causes the return for each share to be higher.
Application:
Earnings per Share serve as an indicator of a company s profitability. The EPS increased 325 cents
from 773 cents in 2013 to 1098 cents in 2014. The company s profitability increased by 42% in 2014,
which is a great improvement from 2013. Profits increased from R3 514 100 000 in 2013 to R5 005
500 000 in 2014, and this played a big role in causing the EPS to increase by 42%. The shareholders
of Aspen Pharmacare Holdings Ltd should be satisfied as the current year (2014) EPS was higher than
usual, and a higher earnings per share ratio often makes the stock price of a company rise.
Earnings Yield
Earnings Yield 2013 = 37.71%
Earnings Yield 2014 =37.60%
Decreased 0.11% from 37.71% to 37.60%

A Report On The Air Service
On Dec. 17, 1903, brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright spent over four years of constant research and
design efforts beginning with a 120 foot, 12 second flight in Kitty Hawk, N.C. This was the very first
flight in a heavier than air machine. Up till then people had only ever flown in balloons and gliders.
Leon Delagrange was the first passenger to fly in a plane, he flew with French pilot Henri Farman
from a meadow outside of Paris in 1908. Later that year Charles Furnas was the first American
passenger when he flew with Orville Wright at Kitty Hawk. The first proper air service was in Florida

Another slower achievement was improving the aircraft designs, although when World War I arrived,
countries soon realised the importance of aircraft and the advantage they could give. In that time the
production had to increase considering the largely rising demands from governments from both sides
of the Atlantic. What was the most significant of the War was the development of more powerful
motors, these new motors aloud certain aircraft to reach seeps of up to 130 miles per hour. These fast
speeds more than doubles the speed of original war designed aircraft, this rise in speed also aloud
larger aircraft to be possible.
These and other early flights were headline events, but commercial aviation was very slow to catch on
with the general public, most of whom were afraid to ride in the new flying machines. Improvements
in aircraft design also were slow. However, with the advent of World War I, the military value of
aircraft was quickly recognized and production increased to meet the soaring demand for planes from
governments on both sides of the Atlantic. Most significant was the development of more powerful
motors, enabling aircraft to reach speeds of up to 130 miles per hour, more than twice the speed of pre
war aircraft. Increased power also made larger aircraft

The Quest For Power In Shakespeare s Macbeth
The quest for power has its negative consequences. Gaining power benefits the abuser by giving them
power and control. Depending on how you gain power could define if it s positive or negative. The
world wouldn t be as it is today, if it wasn t for the negative and positive obstacles we faced.
Sometimes, in order to achieve power, abuses occur and people are hurt or taken advantage of along
the way. During imperialism weaker countries were exploited by the countries on a quest for power
and in the story The Tragedy of Macbeth, Lady Macbeth and Macbeth killed the king to gain total
power.(Shakespeare 233) The cost of power sometimes requires a steep price. Should the U.S. have

A Critical Analysis Of Bourgois And Schonberg
Bourgois and Schonberg make no attempt in Righteous Dopefiend to euphemize or otherwise lessen
the shocking blow of reading the stories of homeless heroin injectors in San Francisco. Their
ethnography plunges directly into an environment where property crime, interpersonal violence, and
sexual abuse are normalized to such an extent that cultural relativism may be difficult for a privileged
reader to apply. To explain these violent and abusive subjectivities, or constructions of individual
subjects, Bourgois and Schonberg synthesize and apply ideas from critical theory to form their
concept of lumpen abuse, which describes the violence imposed by political structures on the
lumpenproletariat. They also urge the reader to consider the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

They conducted their fieldwork collaboratively, improving their ethnographic technique and clarifying
the analysis process through comparing their interpretations and insights. In the midst of their
fieldwork, Bourgois and Schonberg learned the logics of hustling : when to give, to help, to say no, to
be angry. They eschewed conventional research dogmas and its ethical imperatives constructed by
intellectuals in isolation from society in order to stay in touch with the reality of life on the street.
Bourgois and Schonberg also discuss how they practiced cultural relativism as an essential method to
confront this reality productively and without moral judgment or other socially ingrained reactions
that prevent the mind from opening to and analyzing environments and people.
With respect to presentation technique, Righteous Dopefiend is first and foremost a photo ethnography
accompanied by analysis for understanding and fieldnotes for context. According to Bourgois and
Schonberg, photos can constitute a voyeuristic pornography of suffering if viewed out of context, but
in context they allow for greater recognition of structural and everyday violence. They also say that
photos draw emotion, aesthetics, and documentation into social science analysis and theory . This
claim is clear when reading their work; almost every image conjures empathy with the subject s
intense physical and emotional

Theme Of Clothing In Macbeth
In William Shakespeare s Macbeth, Shakespeare utilizes clothing to demonstrate two main ideas
related to Macbeth s psyche. He first uses the motif of clothing to symbolize power, and later to show
that dress can be used as a mask to cover up evil beings and deeds. Shakespeare utilizes the recurring
image of clothing to emphasize the change in power in Scotland, the difference of nobles opinions,
and the poor shift in the ruler. In Act 1 Scene III, the imagery of clothing is predominant and
demonstrates Macbeth s change in title. Once Angus, a Scottish noble, reports to Macbeth that he has
earned the title of Thane of Cawdor, he says The Thane of Cawdor lives. Why do you dress me / In
borrowed robes? (1. 3. 110 111) He is in disbelief that the witches first prophecy has come true and
questions his title. Shakespeare utilizes the clothing imagery to emphasize that from this particular
moment in Macbeth s life, both his personality and psyche are about to undergo a drastic change, by
transforming into a man blinded by his ambition for power. Later, while Angus explains why he is
receiving this title, he unintentionally foreshadows Macbeth s future:
Who was the thane lives yet,
But under heavy judgment bears that life
Which he deserves to lose. . .
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
But treasons capital, confessed and proved,
Have overthrown him. (1. 3. 112 114, 117 118)

A Comparison Between Film Versions of Emma and Clueless Essay
A Comparison Between Film Versions of Emma and Clueless
The features I will look for in both films for comparison is setting, location, lighting, costumes, props,
camera angles, dialogue and weather. Emma is set in the early 20th century and Clueless in the 1990 s.
The director changed the era to refer to the fact that girls nowadays are more mature than young
women in the early 20th century.
The diversity between the locations in both films is very minor. In Clueless it is set in Beverly Hills in
America and in Emma is set in England. England in the early 20th century is largely countryside with
prosperous houses, and a rigid hierarchy. Beverly Hills is quite comparable to England as it is rich ...

This is also a casual place where the teenagers of this film hang out. Settings from both films imply
wealth and that both characters are spoilt.
The lighting in the film Emma is dull in the interior setting this gives a romantic atmosphere, and
makes her look as if she has a smooth complexion, as the main light source are candles, which are
subtle and did not show blemishes like modern lighting does. These added to her beauty and enact
desirability to men. Other means of light in the interior settings are also subtle as there is no
electricity; light sources are windows, and fireplaces. They also used rich colours in their furnishing
that increased the darkness of the film. But in the exterior settings the lighting is brighter, but this is
natural and subtle lighting, for example the weather. The director does this to create the scenes to look
natural. There is a great contrast between Emma and Clueless as technology has improved and we no
longer have to live in darkness. So there is extra lighting in Clueless indoors. Also because Cher s
house is modern it has neutral colours that repeal a lot of light and makes the rooms look bigger,
unlike Emma. Out doors, like Emma, is bright and natural and is often sunny. The darker setting is in
the party. The darker light gives off a more alluring side of you, which you would want in a party, as
in the intimate settings in Emma.

  • 2. Syrian Civil War Essay ECPSC 2013 CURRENT AFFAIRS HANDOUT 11 SYRIAN CIVIL WAR Gen 1. The Syrian civil war also commonly known as the Syrian uprising is an ongoing armed conflict in Syria between forces loyal to the Syrian Baath Party government and those seeking to oust it. The conflict began on 15 March 2011, with popular demonstrations that grew nationwide by April 2011. These demonstrations were part of the wider Middle Eastern protest movement known as the Arab Spring. Protesters demanded the resignation of President Bashar al Assad, whose family has held the presidency in Syria since 1971, as well as the end to over four decades of Baath Party rule. In April 2011, the Syrian Army was deployed to quell the uprising. After months of military sieges, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 5. The Assad family comes from the minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam that comprises an estimated 12 percent of the total Syrian population generating resentment among some Sunni Muslims, a sect that makes up about three quarters of Syria s population. 2 World Opinion 6. The Arab League, United States, European Union, Arab States of the Persian Gulf, and other countries condemned the use of violence against the protesters. The Arab League suspended Syria s membership because of the government s response to the crisis, but granted the Syrian National Coalition, Syria s seat on 6 March 2013. The Arab League also sent an observer mission in December 2011, as part of its proposal for peaceful resolution of the crisis. 7. A further attempt to resolve the crisis was made through the appointment of Kofi Annan as a special envoy. On 15 July 2012, the International Committee of the Red Cross assessed the Syrian conflict as a non international armed conflict (the ICRC s legal term for civil war), thus applying international humanitarian law under the Geneva Conventions to Syria. Current Situation 8. On 2 January 2013, the United Nations stated that the war s death toll had exceeded 60,000; on 12 February, this figure was updated to 70,000. According to various opposition activist groups, between 62,550 and 74,470 people have been killed, of which about half were civilians, and also included ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay on Geographic Technology in Real Estate Geographic Technology in Real Estate: A Technology Assessment Report Introduction Real estate is defined by the Barron s Dictionary of Real Estate Terms as the land and everything more or less attached to it. Ownership below to the center of the earth and above to the heavens. This definition clearly conveys the geographically fixed nature of real estate and the inherent risk associated with this characteristic that is not found in other financial assets such as stocks and bonds. It is the identification and quantification of these risks that dominates the real estate decision. Regardless of whether a large insurance company is determining if it will insure a trophy office property in New York City or Starbucks debating the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The lender is also concerned with the strength of the particular market where a prospective borrower is located when underwriting a loan. Markets with declining economic health can lead to a situation where the borrower is no longer capable of paying the monthly mortgage payment. Under this scenario, a lender will likely acquire the property through foreclosure and subsequently sell it for an amount that is hopefully equal to the outstanding loan balance. Should the sale price be less than the outstanding loan balance due to weakening market fundamentals, the lender again suffers a loss. The scenarios presented above suggest that commercial lending institutions have a need for GIS as a risk management tool during the underwriting process as well as after a loan has been originated. An analysis of ESRI and MapInfo GIS risk management products was conducted as these two vendors have the most advanced GIS software geared toward the business community. Care has been taken not to include substantial discussion of each vendor s market analysis software (which is used extensively in the mortgage underwriting process) in the commercial lending section as this will be the focus of the site selection component of the paper. From a pure risk management perspective, MapInfo is more advanced than ESRI. Currently, MapInfo has three products that focus on the analysis of risk from the perspective of property insurance providers. Although ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Copper Life Cycle Essay Copper is a metal that has been used by humans essentially since the beginning of existence as it is said to be only the second metal used by man after gold. Therefore, copper production has been an important part of life for thousands or years and still is today. The copper cycle is an important because it provides a basis for how copper can be recovered from various compounds that it exists in during its so called life cycle . The life cycle of copper conserves this now scarce metal by allowing the recovery of the pure substance at any point through experimental means. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Reaction one was an exothermic reaction. This was determined simply because when nitric acid was mixed with the copper wire a significant amount of heat was given off to the surroundings, therefore the reaction had to be exothermic. Reaction two was exothermic as well. This was determined because precipitation reactions are always exothermic as the formation of a solid is a decrease in entropy so delta S is negative which means that enthalpy would be negative, therefore it is an exothermic reaction. Reaction three is an endothermic reaction. This was determined simply because a decomposition reaction is carried out through the addition of energy, usually heat to break down a compound, therefore the addition of heat to carry out to the reaction means it has to be endothermic. Reaction four was exothermic. This was determined because it was an acid base neutralization reaction. Acid base neutralization reactions are always exothermic as they release heat from the system to the surroundings. Reaction five was endothermic. This was determined because the reaction sped up when heated. The reduction of Copper Sulfate to Copper occurred at room temperate when Hydrochloric Acid and Aluminum were combined. However, when the beaker was put on a hot plate the reaction occurred noticeably faster therefore indicating that it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Inductive Argument In the first part of the assignment we were asked to identify components of arguments, premise and conclusion, for the passages. Where applicable we are to highlight key words or phrases that identify a claim as a premise or a conclusion. A premise is the support for the conclusion. (Missimer, 2005) The first example has several premises as follows if Sue s baby is a boy it will be named Mark and if it is a girl it will be named Margaret. Another premise is that Sue will have a boy or girl. So is a keyword indicating the conclusion that Sue s baby will be named Mark or Margaret. In the next example, because is a keyword in the premise and indicates that the conclusion has preceded and a reason will follow. This premise is that fantasy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the last part of the assignment we are asked to identify the arguments as inductive or deductive. An argument is said to be deductive if its conclusion is claimed to necessarily follow the premise. An inductive argument claims only that its conclusion probably follows from its premises. That is, the inferential claim is that since the premises are true or acceptable, the conclusion is likely to be true or acceptable. (Missimer, 2005) The first and second examples are inductive because even though the premises may be true, it is still possible for the conclusion to be false. They will then have to be looked at to see if they are strong or weak and if all premises are true or if one or more is false. We can then determine if the argument is reliable or unreliable. The third example is a deductive argument if we go by the definition above. If the premises are true then it simply isn t possible for the conclusion to be false. If you have a deductive argument and you accept the truth of the premises, then you must also accept the truth of the conclusion; if you deny it, then you are denying logic ... However not all of the refining features work as they should. For example, the geography filter is not the most accurate, there is uncertainty if geography is categorised by topic, publisher or author. Furthermore when a geographical location is selected, the results are inaccurate, although this is mainly because the databases which EBSCO searches through do not always accurately define the article s location. (EBSCO Host, 2016) One of the advantages of this platform is its thesaurus and predictive search terms which allow you to search at ease. Other databases for example Passport are only capable of searching an exact phrase in an exact term. EBSCO Host manages to predict your search, or similar searches which helps those who may lack confidence. EBSCO states that its neutral relevance ranking strategy uses numerous criteria, including term frequency, field weighting, exact title matching and content attribute boosting, to provide users with the most relevant results for each query (Kelley, 2013). It was located in a larger room in the basement of the church. There were around fifteen members that attended. The individual s came from an array of different ages and ethnicities, both men and woman. There was no one race or ethnicity that dominated another in the meeting, it was a very warm, accepting atmosphere. I noticed right away that there was more young adults around the age of thirty than elderly members. There was also around the same number of males and females in attendance. The meeting began with the appointed leader asking if there were any new members in the group, and gave them a chance to introduce themselves. I also introduced myself at this time, and explained my role as a student. They then transitioned into reciting the serenity prayer and having a moment of silence, allowing them to give thanks to their higher power. The leader then had different individuals recite the week s motivational phrase and reflect on the quote. The quote talked about forgiving yourself as an alcoholic, and the concept of letting go of the guilt that they have over hurting themselves and the people that they love when they were under the influence. This topic was very triggering for the members, and lead them into a very power discussion around the different people in their lives that were directly affected by their drinking. Under the direction of Playwright Agatha Christine, Eric C. Skiles the director, directed a great cast of actors. Who brought out humorous and suspenseful moments through out the production. There was also sound when Mrs. Boyle died by making loud stomping noises. The sound was still successful during the play because it gave parts of the play life. There were a lot of great acting moments during this production I enjoyed. I loved Detective Sergeant Trotter performance the most. He brought the most passion to his character throughout the whole entire of play. Even though when we thought he was the most innocent person during the play. Another character I liked was Mollie Ralston because her role was questionable at times. Sometimes you wonder if she was innocent, guilty, or should be the next victim to die. The funniest actor was Christopher Wren because of his hilarious moments. People in the audience would laugh with he had a goofy line to say. The things I couldn t enjoy is a couple of actors who weren t understandable. These characters were Giles Ralston and Mr. Paravicini because of their accents they had to betray. In Catholicism, Confession is a very important ritual for the forgiveness of sins. Now that society is evolving onto the online world, so are the rituals and practices of the Catholic Church. I believe an online Confession app has the authenticity of an offline one, but lacks the effectiveness of the sacrament as it was intended to be. The Practical and Ritual dimension is what the adherents of a religion do as a part of the religion, such as prayer and ritual. The Experiential and Emotional dimension focuses on the subjective and emotional side of the religion or what happens on the inside. The Social and Institutional side of the religion is how people s interactions are planned within the religion. When Cheryl set foot on the trail, she knew nothing of hiking besides a few basic skills she was taught by her step father. She suffered from her lack of knowledge until she met these three people. One of these characters was an elderly man named Albert. His role as mentor was brief yet the one of the most notable throughout Cheryl s journey. The young In one another s arms, birds in the trees Those dying generations at their song, This section of the poem is one that gives a very sad and depressing tone. The section states that death is inevitable and everyone will face it. The tone sets a mood that is thoughtful. It really makes the reader step back and reflect on life. This can be shown by the author s rather sadden view on aging. An aged man is but a paltry thing, A tattered coat upon a stick. This part sets an intense and harsh tone in a way. The harsh tone incorporated into this section gives the reader a sense of disappointment and sadness. This statement is meant to be a very stern one so readers can realize that aging isn t a great thing, or at least the author thinks so. The Uncanny Valley And Visual Expertise Introduction The uncanny valley is a phenomenon that occurs when we see human like beings and we notice that they have or are missing some human features. The realization that they are missing human features causes negative feelings of unease. In this paper I will first describe the uncanny valley. MacDorman Cattopadhyay (2016) provide an interesting explanation as to why it can occur and how the effect can be influenced. MacDorman Cattopadhyay (2016) suggests that eeriness of the uncanny valley is not because of how eerie they look. Rather, it depends on how human like they are. Then, I will describe visual expertise. Visual expertise in this sense refers to our ability to identify faces and other objects that we have experience in perceiving. That experience is used to make top down assumptions about what faces and their features should look like. Harel (2016) looks at visual expertise, where it works, and how it works. Lastly, I will describe the relationship between the uncanny valley and visual expertise. Kätsyri, Förger, Mäkäräinen, Takala (2015) provide an argument in their surveying that can explain the relationship. They suggest that a possible explanation is that the visual expertise that we have with facial recognition perceives featural differences in an artificial human like face. The difference elicit that eerie response because we see something that does look human like, but we identify as not being human. Uncanny Valley The uncanny valley refers to ... The text shows Hector cares for his wife and especially his son Astyanax. I would verbally confront him on the idea that it is clear he places his own glory over his family. The nobility of condemning his wife and infant child to a life of slavery is certainly less noble than doing whatever it takes to protect them. She accomplished so much in fields such as literature and politics. The fact that she was able to do so much with her life is impressive not only in the fact that she was a woman, but more impressive due to the fact that she became blind and deaf at only eighteen months old. Through the help of Anne Sullivan though, Keller, was able to learn so much. This short story, The Day Language Came into My Life, is an excerpt from her autobiography, where she recalls her memories from when she first learned about language. In her story, Keller, uses a unique metaphor to describe what it was like going from no language to having a language. She does this by comparing herself to a boat in a dense fog with no compass or sounding line, who was just lost at sea in a tangible darkness, and then the light came into her world. One other example is the time when she feels water and learns what it is called, and suddenly feels awakened, hopeful, and even free. He first uses the motif of clothing to symbolize power, and later to show that dress can be used as a mask to cover up evil beings and deeds. Shakespeare utilizes the recurring image of clothing to emphasize the change in power in Scotland, the difference of nobles opinions, and the poor shift in the ruler. In Act 1 Scene III, the imagery of clothing is predominant and demonstrates Macbeth s change in title.
