Advantages Of The Confederate Flag
The Confederate Flag Debate in Today s Society
The confederate flag has always been a symbol that has caused much controversy. It has been called
a symbol of pride, also a symbol of hate. Many people wonder why it is still seen in today s society
or why it causes so much tension if it is just a flag to some. The flag has bisected the country for
a long time (Kozlowska, 2014). It is a definite border between some citizens and a huge social
problem. It has caused issues for decades and still carries on racial slurs, white power, and bad
morals. Nonetheless the information provided compares both sides of the debate.
Research over whether or not the confederate flag is racist or a symbol of pride has been conducted
for many years now and it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Likewise, the people who are confederate ignorant play a problem to society. Learning about the
reasons why is it a social problem gives a deeper understanding of where each individual comes
from.
Negative societal issues regarding the Confederate Flag
Now this was a common research scenario and many felt that it had no connotation to their life
or lifestyles. However, some were deeply hurt by the flag. In the article by Wallace Best he
states, Mama suggested that she had never seen the Confederate flag during her years in the
South because the community in which she lived was strictly segregated, and few people, black
or white, ever crossed the line (Best, 2001, p. 14. Surely this portrays that the flag to them was a
sign of racial segregation and power. The whites were powerful over the flag and many African
American s failed to see it. It was seen as stepping out of place for the blacks. (Best, 2001). Blacks
and whites were not cohesive in being together.
Even though the confederate flag stands by two different sides in society, actions were not taken
upon until recently. It happened when racial actions and hate became more prevalent through
society. An example that was shown through research was in South Carolina. This state struggled
with deciding to keep or remove the flag. The debate over whether the battle flag should remain
flying on public space went on for fifteen years

Diversity In Alaska
In my opinion, the best place to visit (between Florida and Alaska), would be Alaska. Alaska is
not only vast in terrain, but its wildlife is even more pulchritudinous than Florida. Also, there is
culture that I have not yet learned. New culture brings diversity. By including diversity within our
lives we are opening our minds to a brighter/happier life. Alaska has many places, the most
interesting are its national parks. These national parks are: Wrangell St. Elias National Park, and
Glacier Bay National Park.
First of all, Alaska is a place that has beauty under the ice... A vast land, with its majority of
carnivorous creatures from the size of a spec of dirt, to the largest creatures such as the Orca Whale,
which is also known as the Killer Whale . Wildlife is one of Alaska s many gifts. There are many
other factors to this majestic, and icy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This park is not what the name implies. This National Park is home to a coastal rain forest and
colossal mountains which surround an enormous, and beautiful ocean bay. There are three or
more ways to get around this fascinating state... These transportations are: cruise ships, tour
vessels (with guides {National Park Service Naturalist}), and boats. The number one place to go
when at Glacier Bay National Park, is to see Margerie Glacier. (glacier grows up to ten feet daily)
In conclusion, I would visit Alaska and its National Park s. There are many, but also, its riveting
to go somewhere new. By going somewhere new, we as people are opening our hearts and minds
to diversity. Diversity may sound clichГ©, but it does have its traits. If I were to travel to Alaska
its national parks would be the first place(s) I would turn to (as a recreational activity/educational
activity). There are many places in the world, but only one of them is Alaska. Alaska has mystery,
grace, and enchantment. Between Florida and Alaska, Alaska is the place to

A lonely, somewhat weaker than the average Prince Siegfried, who questions his sexuality (think

herself. The Prince encounters androgynous creatures, swans that waddle through the ground rather
than the graceful water creatures that we know from Petipa/Ivanov. (http://www.theballetbag.com

Difference Between Health And Social Class
Variations in health and inequality have always been the subject of debates and studies throughout
the last century; explanations varied from: our lifestyles, our ethnicity, and even our gender. So
why after 100 years of studying this worldwide phenomenon, and producing detailed statistical
evidence, with well informed debates are we still living in a society where inequality in healthstill
exists? One would expect with so much progress in medicine, vast improvements in our living
/housing standards; raised awareness and understanding of issues relating to our cultural and
genetic profiles, that this inequality would be on par with how society has overcome other
inequalities including race and gender. Have we done enough by trying to explain this in terms of
the Genetics, Cultural, or Material variants? Or are they all correct, and this kind of inequality in
our society is something that is inevitable?
Health and ill health on the basis of Cultural/Behaviour is explained as having direct relationships
with social class and how their actions determine their health. According to (Bourdieu 1984) Life
expectancy amongst people in high social class standing was because of their inclination towards a
cult of health consciousness and their appearance of the body: the body as a thing displayed to
others...and a high value being placed on moderate drinking and careful diet. What Bourdeau is
suggesting is that our lifestyle is determined by our culture, and seems to be suggesting

Live From Death Row
In my paper, I will talk about and examine the book named Live from Death Row, by Mumia
Abdul Jamal. Next, I will evaluate the book overall. In addition, I will talk about the adversities
that the prisoners on death row have to face. Finally, I will give my assessment on the book and
how it has influenced my life.
Live from Death Row is written as a different array of essays, which can be viewed in a political
manner. Mumia Abdul Jamal was sentenced to stay on death row in 1982. Mumia Abdul Jamal
starts his works by recognizing numerous Africans Americans who have battled for racial equality.
He recognizes past and present people, some who have been named and other people who have not.
Jamal will probably uncover the shameful acts towards him and his kindred detainees while in the
correctional system. He likewise endeavors to reveal insight into the degenerate American criminal
justice system, which is proven by his examples, sentenced him to death in the 1980 s. He shares
his own stories as well as incorporates the account of a number of the death row inmates he has
known there. Jamal likewise utilizes current insights to support his cases. The beginning of Live
From Death Row was composed by John Edgar Wideman. In the introduction, Wideman tries to
connect the reader and Jamal. Recalling horrors of African American history, accepting the

Physical Therapy And Chronic Pain
Chronic pain is a huge issue for many people. A lot of people with chronic pain become depressed
because they can t move or do simple tasks without being in a great amount of pain. Chronic pain
can be caused by osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic headaches, rheumatoid arthritis, and
neuropathic pain, which is caused by injury to tissues or nerves. Physical therapy helps chronic pain
patients become stronger, so they re able to move better. Physical therapy can also teach people
how to move safely and function better than they used to with chronic pain. Exercisecan involve
walking on a treadmill or swimming in a pool. Physical therapy helps to build strength in the
muscles, builds endurance, stability in the joints, and flexibility in the muscles and joints.
Keeping a regular exercise routine will also help control chronic pain. Regular exercise from
physical therapy will help people maintain the ability to move and function properly, and prevent
people from becoming disabled by their chronic pain. The less a person moves, the more pain a
person will experience. The more physical therapy a person receives, the more they learn to control
their pain, the less pain they feel, and they ll be more able to function in society.... Show more

If a person s injuries keep them from standing or moving around, physical therapy can make it
easier to get around. Hands on treatments and certain exercise can improve joint and muscle
mobility, which will lead to better function. People will be able to do daily activities when they
have more mobility, such as, going to the grocery store, doing household chores, and taking care
of their children. Having improved mobility will also help to prevent further injuries. For example,
with people who have multiple sclerosis, physical therapy can help those with the disease to
improve their mobility and keep their independence as a person, with decreasing some of the more
severe effects of the

Justification for Higher Education

Writing 39B, Assignment 1
5 February 2003
Justification For Higher Education After analyzing William A. Henry III s In Defense of Elitism
and Caroline Bird s
College is a Waste of Time and Money , it is clear that Henry s argument concerning the purpose of
an education is more rational than Bird s due to the fact that Henry supports his claims with
credible statistics, logical insight, and uses current real world scenarios. Bird, on the contrary, bases
her argument solely on manipulated statistics, overly dramatic claims, and ridiculously out of this
world scenarios. While there are various viewpoints and perspectives on the subject of higher
education,
Henry for one, has landed the conclusion that in America ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

As wasteful as it may seem, college graduates working in fields that don t even require a degree is
indeed a trend today. It reminds me of a close family friend of mine who graduated from the
University of California, Riverside in 2000 as a math major. Today he is working as a private
investigator for an insurance company. This job not only lacks the requirement of a four year
college degree, but can actually be obtained rather quickly by simply enrolling in a six week
training program. It is certainly not fair to simply categorize my friend in Henry s group of
mediocrities just yet, but it is safe to say that he would have been better off not going to college
in the first place. In his case, Henry s claim that college may well be a credential without being a
qualification (333) is confirmed. While Henry makes his claims with regards to rationality, Bird
attempts to undermine the thinking of her readers by overdramatizing her claims and then trying to
support them with manipulated statistics. Her simple argument is that too many students are in
college for the wrong reasons and therefore they are wasting their time and money. Unfortunately,
her approach and lines of reasoning for various claims are not so simple. Bird expresses her
feelings that she is overwhelmed by the prevailing sadness on American campuses (324).

The Really Big One By Kathryn Schulz
The Really Big One is an article by Kathryn Schulz about the Cascadia Subduction Zone, a fault line
that runs seven hundred miles along the West Coast. It consists of two tectonic plates where one
plate is sliding underneath another. In this case, the oceanic plate Juan de Fuca is sliding under the
continental plate known as the North American plate. In her article, Schulz repeats the words of
seismologists and scientists alike in the opinion that the Cascadia Subduction Zone is overdue for a
magnitude 9.0 or higher earthquakeand resulting tsunami. No one in the Pacific Northwest is
prepared for it. With historical stories and examples from around the world Schulz warns of the
damage to be done when the Really Big One finally makes itself known.
In her article, Schulz uses three rhetorical appeals. These appeals are called Ethos, Pathos, and
Logos. Aristotle, the Greek philosopher, created these terms to refer specifically to the different
ways they appeal to the reader. Ethos is used to establish credibility, Pathos refers to emotion,
and Logos is the appeal to logic. While the article is packed full of history, science and facts, it s
the appeal to emotion that really draws in the readers and instills curiosity and a desire for action.
Schulz s article is split into five sections. The first section introduces the readers to Chris
Goldfinger, a paleoseismologist at Oregon State University. Goldfinger was at a seismology
conference in Kashiwa, Japan when the 2011 Tohoku

Mental Representation Of Critical Discourse Analysis
Mental representation in Critical Discourse Analysis
Levels of analysis
This phrase is applied to social sciences to point to the location, size or scale of a research target.
It is unique from the term unit of observation as the former relates to an integrated set of
relationships while the latter is about the distinct unit from which data will be gathered. The levels
of analysis are not mutually exclusive but an in critical discuss analysis research generally falls
under micro level and the macro level of analysis.
Macro versus micro level of analysis
The usage of language, discourse communication, and verbal interaction belong to the micro
level of the social order. On the other hand, powered, dominance and inequality between social
groups are concepts that relate to the macro level of analysis. Critical discourse analysis bridges
the gap between the micro and macro level of analysis that get to be a sociological construct in its
own right. The macro and micro levels of interactions integrate into being one whole that is unified.
For example, a racist remark in parliament is a discourse at the micro level of the social interaction
but at the same time, it may also constitute a part of legislation or reproduction at racism at the
macro level. The language of thought hypothesis(LOTH) states that the nature of thought and
thinking is undertaken in a mental language i.e. it is done in a symbolic system that is physically
realized in the brain of Humans. Critical

Karl Marx Religion
Karl Marx himself was an atheist and Marxism is an atheistic ideology, meaning that they take
distance from the belief that there is a God . He meant that in the country of reason the mere
existence of God can have no meaning . He gave an example that if you brought your God to a
foreign country that worshipped other Gods, they will provide proof of the non existence of your
God . However, Marx did not address religionin a systematic fashion in any of his writing but at
the same time he touches on the subject recurrently in books, speeches and pamphlets. The reason
for this is that one can clearly see that his critique of religion forms one piece of his overall
critique of society. In order to be able to understand his critique of religion,

Net Ionic Equation Lab Report
The net ionic equation above shows the formation of Prussian blue. When the
diaquabis(oxalate)ferrate(II) ion reacts with the potassium ferricyanide, the oxalate gets substituted
by cyanide ions and forms a Prussian blue complex ion. The potassium ions will charge balance the

A Critique of Chapter 11 in Neil Postman s Technopoly Essay
A Critique of Chapter 11 in Neil Postman s Technopoly In chapter 11 (The Loving Resistance
Fighter) of the book Technopoly, published in 1992, Neil Postman focuses on a solution to the
problems created by Technopoly. A Technopoly (a word postman capitalizes throughout the book)
is a society that no longer merely uses technology as a support system but instead is shaped by it.
Postman proposes that we become loving resistance fighter(s) who retain the narratives and
symbols that once made the United States the hope of the world (p.182). He believes education is
to lead the resistance against technology by changing the curriculum to help restore a sense of
meaning and purpose lost to the Technopoly.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In chapter 11 Postman gives examples of people who resist the American Technopoly. An
example of a resistance fighter is a person who ignores a poll unless they know the questions
asked and why. As Postman introduced in chapter 8 ( Invisible Technologies ), the form of a
question can produce many different answers. It may also restrict us from seeing solutions to
problems that may become visible through a question worded differently. Postman shares the
story of two priests who write the Pope asking if it was allowable to smoke and pray at the same
time. One priest phrased the question Is it permissible to smoke while praying? and the
response was no because praying should be the focus of ones attention; the other priest asked Is
it permissible to pray while smoking? and the response was yes, since it is always appropriate to
pray. The opinion of almost any issue is a function of the question asked. In the American
Technopoly the opinion poll is a strict yes or no answer to an unexamined question. One is
therefore unable to share their knowledge and is easily mislead to answer a question in a certain
way. Another example of a resistance fighter is a person who does not allow psychology or any
social science to pre empt the language and thought of common sense. This example clearly relates
to chapter 9 ( Scientism ), in which Postman expresses his annoyance of the many people who have
a strong

At the end of the story, The Lady or the Tiger, the man had a choice to pick which door. The

princess lead him to opened the one with the tiger. Even though she would have had to watch
her lover die a painful death I don t think she could have bared to watch him be with another. One
other reason it leads me to believe she picked that one is because she was semi barbaric, like her
father. It even said in the story that she enjoyed watching them as much as he did. The princess
knew the game and knew that if she picked the one with the lady behind it they would be happily

Football is a very dangerous, physical, high contact sport, whether it be at the high school level,
collegiate, or professional. Injuries are common among football athletes whether it may be
concussions, breaks, fractures, or tears. The scenario explained below demonstrates how injuries
have the ability to affect an athlete s self confidence through Bandura s Theory of Self Efficacy.
This example surrounds a two sport high school athlete in football and baseball.
During the middle of the football season the athlete made a tackle off an interception and brought
down the defender, during the play the athlete suffered an injury in which he did not find out about
until five months later after testing. The injury included a dislocation and fracture of the right
shoulder as well as a torn labrum and labral, the labral helps keep the shoulder stay in the socket

During the winter baseball workouts started and the athlete was unable to throw due to his injury
to his throwing shoulder, he grew concern and later sought out help from an outside doctor. After a

The Abbasid Revolution
The Abbasid Revolution
The Abbasid Dynasty, known to its supporters as the blessed dynasty , which imposed its authority
on the Islamic empire in 132/750, claimed to inaugurate a new era of justice, piety and happiness.
The dynasty ruled the Islamic Caliphate from 750 to 1258 AD, making it one of the longest and
most influential Islamic dynasties. For most of its early history, it was the largest empire in the
world, and this meant that it had contact with distant neighbors such as the Chinese and Indians in
the East, and the Byzantines in the West, allowing it to adopt and synthesize ideas from these
cultures.

The Abbasids maintained the hereditary control of the caliphate, forming a new dynasty. The
alliance with the Shiites was short lived, and the Abbasids became champions of Sunni orthodoxy,
upholding the authority of their family over that of Ali, and continuing the subjugation of the
Shiites. Even Abu Muslim, the popular leader who more than any other single individual was the
architect of the Abbasid victory, was put to death by the second Abbasid Caliph, Al Mansur.
However, the Abbasids did prove loyal to their Persian mawali allies. In fact, Abbasid culture
would come to be dominated by the legacy of Persian civilization. The Abbasid court was heavily
influenced by Persian customs, and members of the powerful Persian Barmakid family acted as the
advisers of the caliphs and rivaled them in wealth and power.
One of the earliest and most important changes the Abbasids made was to move the capital of
the Islamic empire from the old Umayyad power base of Damascus to a new city Baghdad.
Baghdad was founded in 762 by al Mansur on the banks of the Tigris River. The city was round in
shape, and designed from the beginning to be a great capital and the center of the Islamic world.
Baghdad grew quickly with encouragement from the Abbasid state, and it was soon the largest city
in the world. At Baghdad, the Persian culture that the Umayyads had attempted to suppress was
now allowed to thrive. Art, poetry, and science flourished. The Abbasids learned from the Chinese

Handmaid s Tale Anthony Quotes
Furthermore, along with how Anthony s quote can be related as a contradictory term towards
Atwood s novel titled The Handmaid s Tale (1985), it can also be seen through my personal life.
Although it is opposed to Atwood s novel, Anthony s quote is not contradictory towards my
personal life. An example of how Anthony s quote can be related to my personal life can be seen
through a sport called cheerleading. I have been practicing this sport since I was nine years old.

cheerleading career, I have been coached by multiple male cheerleaders. An example of one of

the one that teaches me how to do flips. Along with how he is a coach, he is also an athlete on a

Porphyria s Lover And My Last Duchess
Robert Browning s poems Porphyria s Lover and My Last Duchess depict a mastery of the dramatic
monologue style. Said style contains a narrative told by a character s point of view that differs from
that of the poet. The character s monologue consists of them discussing their particular situation that
they find themselves within, this is meant to convey their internal information to the reader or
audience. This in turn allows the reader a glimpse into the personality of the narrating character.
Within Porphyria s Lover and My Last Duchessthese monologues are used along with poetic
devices to develop unique male personas. Between these two personas there are evident differences
in class and within each class social issues arise within each work.... Show more content on

Both of these works contain the unique ability, as portrayed by Browning, to create a deep
fictional psyche that displays the strange relationship between man and woman. This relationship
is displayed as one full of pain, jealousy, rejection and happiness, the majority of these emotion
are contained in love and marriage. From this the reader can infer the nature of love being the
conquering of class distinction and marriage involves sexist male inhibitions. Insecurities are seen
in both poems and are evident in the perspective voices of the male protagonists, who are seen as
incapable to handle their aggressive and possessive natures when it comes to love and marriage.
Browning seems to be demonstrating the side of relationships avoided previously by Romantics
and in doing so shows the negative implication on seemingly unruly

Examples Of Alcoholism In Reservation Blues
3.3 Alcoholism The portrayal of alcoholism, which has been rampant through the generations
cannot be denied and presents a paradox with which the native writers must grapple. The
pathetic city drunks and the pitiful alcoholic parents of the warm water sisters, Junior, Thomas,
and Victor ring like wake up calls to the social problems faced by the Indian people. The
representation of alcoholism in the text, Reservation Blues, highlights a stereotypical social image
of the drunken Indian. It is not a kind of mirroring, portraying colonial impact, that non native
people want to accept and is a sore subject for the Indians, because it is very familiar for most of us.
It is a dilemma for not only Alexie, but the Native writers in general:... Show more content on

Despite the verisimilitude of Alexian portrayal of alcoholism and its impact upon the lives of
the Native Americans, Alexie does not aim to put the social problems of economic instability,
poverty, or cultural oppression into perspective (Coyhis, pp. 157 66). Instead, alcoholism and
drinking are sensationalized: Lester is the most accomplished drunk on the Spokane
Reservation (Schmidt, 2011), a notoriety that wins him tribal hero status. Victor, incapable of
coping with rejection, turns to the bottle for solace like a tragic failed artist. Sherman Alexie
deals with the problem of alcohol in his work, as it is something inherent to the American
Indians. Maybe, the reason is that alcoholism was a big problem in his family. For example, in
his short story, The Only Traffic on the Reservation Doesn t Flash Red Anymore of the novel
The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, he tells the story of a young boy who is
considered a reservation basketball star, but his promising future is destroyed by alcohol. In
another short story, What You Pawn I Will Redeem of Ten Little Indians, Alexie gives a number of
metaphorical names to alcohol, a bottle of fortified courage (Alexie, 2005, p.171)

Stigma. A horrible word, one could think. A powerful word. A mark of disgrace , they said. The
city air was cold against my skin as I walked past the, just as cold, faces of the people streaming
down the streets of Ladhith. It was a chilly day in the busy city. The mood was different. The air

walking back to my small home, when a sharp pain ran through my arm. Stigma. Finding a safe

The Impact of Pseudoscience on Consumers Pseudoscience is known by many as false science.
Many consumers are convinced by companies that sells these products provide instant cures that

up their scientific claims. The Internet, health food stores, magazines, and commercials are just a

While health foods stores attract consumers to purchase health supplements, many manufacturers
use health food stores to promote their bogus products. In March 1999, the FTC filed a complaint
in federal court against the makers of Vitamin O. The company ran false ads claiming the Vitamin O
supplement prevents cancer, heart, and lung disease by adding an extra oxygen supplement to the
bloodstream. With no scientific evidence to prove the benefits of Vitamin O, the two companies
from Washington agreed to a settlement of $375,000 for consumer compensation. The settlement
prohibited the Vitamin O manufacturers from making claims that were unsupported about the
Vitamin O health benefits. Testimonials and endorsements of product represented through previous
experience from members of the public who used the product were also prohibited in the
settlement. In conclusion, marketing agents with false science beliefs have one common goal: To

Brexit is the name of the process of Britain leaving the European Union, which is the primary
concern of the modern global political situation. During the referendum on the UK membership in
the European Union, the main argument for leaving the union was that it would provide the
country with better system and tools of protection from the immigrants. UK citizen was concerned
that immigrants would bring to the country s unemployment rate, lower quality of life and other

The Counter Reformation and Catholic Mass
Rising nationalism, the Western Schism, and even new philosophies arising from the renaissance
were contributing factors. But on October 31, 1517 every event prior seemed less significant. On
this date, Martin Luther nailed a paper listing ninety five theses, all magnifying problems within the
Catholic Church. This was the birth of the protestant reformation, a major blow to the Catholic
Churchand her followers. This drove the church to make many in house adjustments, from religious
orders to political influences of the church, reworking the framework of the traditional Mass itself
and even restructuring many in house positions. This list of corrections made and actions taken in

Alexander Farnese was positioned as Governor General of the Spanish Netherlands. Farnese led a
successful campaign against the Dutch Revolt, in capturing the main cities in the south and
returned them to the control of Catholic Spain. By the treaty of Arras in 1579, he secured the
support of southern Catholic nobles. Although this treaty did not last forever, and the northern
seven provinces eventually became free and independent, forming the Dutch Republic, this was a
victory for the Catholic Church, seeing as the treaty lasted until the end of the reformation period.
To keep a solid foothold in both political and religious worlds, the Church believed institutional
reform was necessary. In 1545, Pope Paul III initiated the Council of Trent, which lasted until 1564.
In this council, a group of cardinals was assigned the duty of addressing many controversial issues
such as indulgences, corrupt priests and bishops, and other financial abuses.
The council based itself off of the Medieval Church. All the way down to its doctrine, sacramental
systems, and religious orders. While this group reaffirmed the traditional fundamentals, noticeable
differences were visible. One correction that made a visible difference was fixing the growing
divide between clerics and the laity. Clerics were commonly rural priests that did not know Latin
and did not have proper theological training. Whereas the laity were more educated in theology and

Reflection Of Visual Art
1a. Central focus for the segment
The central focus of the lesson is for students to demonstrate and show use of space, contrast, and
balance while creating an original idea that displays and the use of positive and negative space in
an equal amount. The purpose is for students to understand the elements and principles of visual arts
, which are value, contrast and balance. Students also learn how these concepts are still being used
in today s society.
1b. Linking skills, knowledge, and context
This is a first year class, so many students are unfamiliar with terms, such as value, contrast, space,
and balance, in terms of art. The students are familiar with the words, but are unfamiliar with how it
pertains to art. New definitions and techniques are introduced in this lesson. Students will continue
to use these new vocabulary terms in future lessons.
In this project students are required to make a total positive space image. To complete this,
students are to use line and shape in their design. The previous projects and lessons in this course
focused on the use of line and shape, so this project reinforces those terms and techniques so
students will use them in future projects.
The last aspect of this assignment is for students to see how the use of space makes interesting
designs. I show the students images of logos and symbols that effectively use positive and negative
space. With this, students can relate to the images and see how these techniques are still being used

Argumentative Speech On Phobias

you that just tuned in, we are here today with Luan, a brilliant undergrad student from Salem State

around the corner, you couldn t have picked a better timing for it.
Luan: Haha I know, right!? It seemed like the perfect timing for it.
Maddy: So tell me about this project of yours; what is it exactly?
Luan: Well one of my courses required students to pick a topic that really interested them to write
about during the semester. It s going to be a pretty long project, so the topic was really important. I
wanted to write and explore about something that was intriguing yet feasible and phobias really hit

phobias are anxiety disorders, lumped in the same class as post traumatic stress disorder and panic
disorder, among others. And anxiety disorders are, fundamentally, based on fear. But this does not
mean that phobias equal fear.

Analysis Of Julie Mehretu s Paintings
Julie Mehretu s paintings are loosely termed history paintings by Douglas Fogle and called
psychogeographies by the artist herself. A viewer is supposed to find something in themselves
much like exploring a city and figuring things out for one s own self interest. Mehretu is quoted
as saying my aim is to have a picture that appears one way from a distance almost like a
cosmology, city, or universe from afar but then when you approach the work, the overall image
shatters into numerous other pictures, stories, and events. Historically drawing is seen as inferior
to paintingwhich makes it interesting that Julie Mehretu would employ so much drawing into
her canvases because drawing is important to architectural drawings. How does the mapping
nature of Julie Mehretu s paintings convey a sense of identity in a very political nature and how
is it a representation of the post colonialist world in which we inhabit? Scholars all seem to agree
that Mehretu s canvases are maps, but what do they seek to accomplish? My analysis of Mehretu
s Stadia III will use a biographical and post colonialist methodology to explore the ways in which
Mehretu s own upbringing and how the very nature of her mapmaking, though very artificial, can
be seen as a way of both bringing us together and giving those groups that have previously been
neglected throughout history a voice.

Gandalf, of course, was thinking entirely about them when he had left for the west for if the wizard

Character Analysis Of Grimaldi
Ina Chen The Ottoman empire has dominated the Mediterranean during the seventeenth century,
offering lucrative opportunities for Christian Europeans of low social or financial rank (Matar 489).
Within this sprawling empire, Philip Massinger constructs the cosmopolitan city of Tunis as the
stage for the confrontation between the Muslims and the Christians. The Renegado reflects on the
anti Turkish sentiments during seventeenth century England as though to undermine alluring and
domineering influence of the Turkish culture, while demonstrating the spiritual superiority of
Christianity. Massinger conjures the image of a repentant renegade in the form of the pirate
Grimaldi. Grimaldi, like the his fellow literary renegades undergoes a spiritual change in which he
converts back to Christianity, unveiling Islams failure in retaining its converts and the ChristianGod
s punishment of those who rejected Him (Matar 492). Massinger also creates the character of Vitelli
to demonstrate that even the most faithful of Christian men can waver from his path, but through
the timely counsel of the priest Francisco, he is able to resist his lust and reaffirm his faith.
Massinger uses Grimaldi to neutralize the fear of the enemy from within (Matar 490), and
demonstrate the all forgiving power of Christianity, which can save even the darkest of souls. The
renegade is the living embodiment of the Islam s superiority, and to undermine this superiority
through the reconversion to

The Effect Of Natural Selection
i.Evolution refers to change over time due to natural selection as organisms adapt and diverge to
produce multiple descendant species (Huxley L., Walter M., 2005, p. 698). Two pillars which form
the basis of all current knowledge of evolution originate from the historical record of evolutionary
change, fossil record and the study of the process of evolutionary change, specifically the effect of
natural selection. Recent developments in science, including molecular and developmental biology,
have greatly contributed to the understanding of biological diversity and how evolution has
changed multiple species, particularly the humanspecies (Losos J., 2014, pp. 3). ii. The concept of
natural selection was partially introduced by naturalist Charles Darwin in 1859 when he proposed
and provided scientific evidence to describe evolution as the idea that all species have evolved
over time from common ancestors through the process of natural selection. To survive in a
particular environment, Darwin s theory proposes that natural selection is the mechanism where
organisms must possess attributes that increase their chance of survival in that environment
(Chidrawi G., Robson M., Hollis S., 2010, pp 114). Therefore, there will be a tendency for these
attributes to be perpetuated and other less appropriate attributes to be lost from the population over
successive generations (Huxley L., Walter M., 2005, pp. 698, 704). iii. Fossils are the remains of
dead plants and animals that have not

Beowulf As A Epic Hero
A hero is defined in Merriam Webster as a ...legendary figure often of divine descent endowed
with great strength or ability...who shows great courage . In order for someone to be recognized
as a hero, they must demonstrate bravery and stand up for what is fair and just, even when they
face conflict. Most traditional heroes are chivalrous and selfless, but in some cases, the hero
desires power, fortune, and a high status, which makes him focus on his own advantages without
much concern for others. During the Anglo Saxon to Medieval period in Britain, heroes
changed from acting selfishly to nobly as exemplified by Beowulf and Arthur. Beowulf is a
legendary hero, whom people have told many stories about, but he is also extremely selfish.
When Beowulf is stopped and questioned by the watchman about his soldiers and past life, he
states that his father was a famous soldier, known far and wide as a leader...men all over earth
surely remember him still (Beowulf 27). By telling the watchman this, he brags about his
distinguished father and his superiority, proving that Beowulf himself should also be highly
regarded. This is one of the first moments in the story the reader notices Beowulf s boastful and
egoistical character. In addition, Beowulf does not seek to conceal his desire for praise. He boasts
of his exploits with a child s simplicity of enjoyment because he craves recognition of his
impressive feats (McNary). Author Sarah McNary conveys that heroes of this time only

believe that the article entitled The Myth of the Latin Women: I Just met a girl named Maria by
Judith Cofer, is the best candidate for this speech. In this article, Ortiz claims that she was one of
the fortunate ones because of her education and proficiency in the English language, compared to
her CompaГ±eras that never even had the opportunity to get an education. Regardless of her
opportunities she was still labeled. The purpose of this article is to inform about her upbringing
being a Latina. Ortiz s tone thought the article is irritated. She portrays herself as irritated
throughout the article to ensure that the public, her audience, understands that words do hurt and
stereotypes aren t okay. Ortiz uses understatements and logos throughout this article. Ortiz uses an
understatment as a tactic;since a young age she was thought of as different because of something
she couldn t change, The line I first heard based on this aspect of the myth happened when the boy
who took me to my first formal dance leaned over to plant a sloppy overeager kiss painfully on my
mouth, and when I did not respond with sufficient passion said in a respectful tone: I thought you
Latingirls were supposed to mature early my first instance of being thought of as a fruit or vegetable
I was supposed to ripen, not just grow into Womanhood like other girls. Usually, everyone

AASB 117 Leases requires lessees to classify leases as either finance leases or operating leases.
The accounting treatment required under each approach is very different and this has raised
concerns by investors and other financial statement users regarding the usefulness of the
information provided. This essay will critically discuss and the criticisms and usefulness of lease
accounting treatment. It will also examine lessee firm s responses to Australian Standard 117
Accounting for Leases.
Definition of capital and operating lease
AASB 117 provides the current rules for leases. In general terms, the lessee classifies leasing
transactions under one of two categories. The current state of practice requires the ... Show more

Whether lease should be classified as finance/capital leases or operating leases, has essential
influences on other issues such as capitalisation of finance/capital leases and disclosure of
operating leases by lessees. Without a clear distinction between a finance/ capital lease and an
operating lease, it is unlikely that the lessee be required to capitalise the lease. This has led to
inconsistent accounting for arrangements that meet the definition of a lease and similar
arrangement that do not.
According to AASB 117, the operating lease structure is a form of off balance sheet accounting,
which means the lease obligation is not reported as a liability on the balance sheet. Critics claims
that as a result of desirability of operating lease classification, lease parties commonly structure
leases in such a way to avoid capital lease accounting by a thin margin and uses it as a source of off
balance sheet financing This is a source of unrecognised financing and it can be difficult for users to
understand. Moreover, the adjustments are inconsistent and frequently understate the lease
obligations.
Furthermore, the lack of transparency caused by current lease classification rules and the resulting
lease structuring that occurs to avoid meeting those rules creates significant problems for users in
assessing the true financial condition and risk of companies. It can even affects naively calculated
debt equity ratios, the footnote only disclosure and further

El Nino, La Nina and Hurricanes Essay
El Nino, La Nina and Hurricanes
How does the change in climate affect the frequency and the path of those powerful hurricanes and
tropical storms in the tropical Pacific and Atlantic Oceans? Global warming has a profound vast
impact on the Earth. Besides landmasses, ocean is warmed unevenly. Additionally, unexpected
changes in ocean current will aggregate the uneven distribution of water temperatures along the
globe. Warmer or cooler than normal sea surface temperatures occur along the Tropical Pacific will
provide good indications of the future climatic change. These weather scenarios are also known as
El Nino, and La Nina. They are indicated by the Southern Oscillation Index, which shows the
prevailing winds in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The opposite holds too also. Recent El Nino occurred in 1983 84, 1987, 1991 94, 1997 98, and
2004. Recent La Nina occurred in 1989 90, 1999 2001 (NOAA). From the Southern Oscillation
Chart, we can see that El Nino and La Nina is occurring more frequently and having a greater
intensity. Theoretically, El Nino will suppress growth, while La Nina will promote the growth of
hurricanes. We will examine whether the theory holds too by looking at the archive hurricane paths.
In 1997 and 2004, there were 29 33 tropical systems in the Pacific Ocean. Most of them curve to the
north and six of them hit Japan, while the Philippines was being hit only once in 1997. This year,
Japan was hit eight times while the Philippines were only hit once. There were less hurricanes,
and they tended to curve north in El Nino year. In Atlantic, there were 8 hurricanes formed in
1997. None moved west to hit Texas or Mexico. In 2004, there were 13 hurricanes and 3 hit
Florida. All Hurricanes made the curve to the north during El Nino. None hit the West Gulf Coast
(Unisys).
In 1999 2001, the La Nina years, there were 16 18 tropical systems formed in the Atlantic. Two to
five tropical systems hit the Western Gulf Coast. In the Pacific, there were more than 33 tropical
systems formed each year, while 5 8 tropical storms hit the Philippines. There were less systems
hitting Japan during El Nino years (Unisys).

Media Censorship Affects The News You See
The Article How Media Censorship Affects The News You See talks about how the government
blocks the information from reaching you. It talks about the act of censorship and how it can be
seen when a person s private information is concealed, graphic details and images are kept
hidden, hiding political bias viewpoints, etc. This is a start to a dystopian society, as news
programs have the control and power to change real information with false facts, leading the public
to believe lies. This can be seen in a more extreme manner in the novel Fahrenheit 451by Ray
Bradburyon page 32, when Montag is given a rule book containing a brief history of the Firemen in
America. He reads, Established, 1790, to burn English influenced book in the Colonies.

Why College Is The Best School For Me
College is a big step in life for those who choose to attend it. Students are taken out of the high
school environment and placed into one with significantly more responsibilities and freedom. At
first glance, the vast number of choices for which college to attend will seem overwhelming, but
with careful research, one can drastically narrow the options down to the specific preferences that
the aspiring student may have. In my case, I have come to the conclusion that the Rose Hulman
Institute of Technology would be the best school for me because of its rewarding campus life,
student body, and academics. When the essay prompt was first explained in class, I had no idea
where to begin in my search for the ideal college. The online databases... Show more content on

Nevertheless, I am certain that Rose Hulman is the most suitable for me.
Rose Hulman s campus life allows for social interactions of all kinds that would assist someone
in my position. The campus is in state, specifically in Terre Haute, which allows for convenient
travel between my school and home location. This factor of staying in reach of the people I
know here in Carmel essentially places less strain on relationships that I have the role of
keeping intact. A steady, communicative relationship with family members and close friends is
key to success during college, since many times the burden of school will weigh me down and I
will need the support of others to keep going. The suburban campus of RHIT with students
having an easygoing as well as productive lifestyle presents to me its most attractive qualities.
According to the college s official website, their campus is very small, quiet, and picturesque
(Housing and Residence Life). Naturally with a smaller suburban campus, there will be a smaller
student body in which more people will be familiar with one another. As a result social cliques
will not be as prevalent when compared to urban campuses, such as those of state universities. My
preference as someone who grew up in the small city of Carmel is to be familiar with its

Hypocrisy and Christianity Essay
Hypocrisy and Christianity
If one were to ask the American public about their views of Christians, what response would one
receive? We can imagine that there would be a great variety of answers. However, most people
might say that, in general, Christians are not very different from everybody else. This is a
problem. There are many people who claim to be Christians whose lifestyles do not reflect their
beliefs. The problem with this situation is that it gives non Christians the wrong impression of
Christianity. Christians need to live their lives in a way that reflects what they claim to believe.
Christianity is a lifestyle not just a set of beliefs. A Christian is not merely someone who attends
church once in a while and believes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People are ready to sue the minute someone does something to them that they feel was uncalled
for. We can see through this that people still have a desire for truth and justice. They want to
hear and see good things. People think of Christians as good people. They expect someone who
claims to be a Christian to be a kind, moral, overall good person. It is extremely disheartening if
those who claim to have the guide to moral living are just as dishonest and coldhearted as anyone
else. It discredits Christianity s claim of having a better way. For example, let s say that it is
discovered that a person who has always attended church and openly claimed Christianity has been
embezzling funds from their company. Many people would be even more angry that he was hiding
behind the front of being a good, honest Christian than if someone who had not laid claim to those
values was discovered in the same crime. If people cannot trust Christians who claim to be moral,
whom can they trust? Is there anything that deems a person or group of people trustworthy?
Hypocrisy among Christians can cause these kinds of ideas to grow.
Christians are commanded in the Bible to take the gospel into all the world. God desires that all
people know Him. However, since He is in heaven and not on the earth now, it is up to His people
to show others the way to Him. Much of that testimony for Christ is through the way Christians
lives are lived. It is well known that

How Did Mary Elizabeth Bowser s Spy
Case of the Civil War Spy: Mary Elizabeth Bowser During the Civil War, the Union and the
Confederacy developed spies networks to help each side gain victory. Many of these spies were
women and African Americans. An African American woman, Mary Elizabeth Bowser is one of
the most celebrated spy with the least amount of historical data. Although Bowser isn t recognized
as much as other Civil War spies, she has been celebrated by journalists, historians and the Central
Intelligence Agency. Bowser was a spy inside the Confederate White House. She was even
inducted into the Military Intelligence Hall of Fame in Fort Huschuca, Arizona. In order to answer

On July 14, 1887, the Chicago Daily Tribune reported on Van Lew s exploits as a Union spy
including having an intelligent servant working inside the Confederate White House. In 1905,
the stories prompted a response from Varnia Davis, Jefferson Davis widow. Davis wrote in a
letter that she never employed an intelligent Negro during the war. She went on to state that her
maid was an ignorant girl born on the plantation and would never do anything to injure her
owners. Some sources state that Mary Bowser used the name Ellen Bond a servant of
Confederate First Lady Varnia Davis, while she was in the Confederate White House and tried to
burn the house down as she escaped at the end of the war. Unfortunately, there are no records
stating that Bowser used the name Ellen bond or that she tried to burn down the Confederate
White House in Richmond in 1865. Historical records show that Bowser was in Richmond at the
end of April 1865; she worked to educate liberated

The sun is much hotter than the Earth and it gives off rays of heat (radiation) that travel through the
atmosphere and reach the Earth. The rays of the sun warm the Earth, and heat from the Earth then
travels back into the atmosphere. The gases in the atmosphere stop some of the heat from escaping
into space. These gases are called greenhouse gases and the natural process between the sun, the
atmosphere and the Earth is called the Greenhouse Effect , because it works the same way as a
greenhouse. The windows of a greenhouse play the same role as the gases in the atmosphere,
keeping some of the heat inside the greenhouse
There are two meanings of the term greenhouse effect . There is a natural greenhouse effect that
keeps the Earth s climate warm and habitable. There is also the man made greenhouse effect,
which is the enhancement of Earth s natural greenhouse effect by the addition of greenhouse gases
from the burning of fossil fuels (mainly petroleum, coal, and natural gas). In order to understand
how the greenhouse effect operates, we need to first understand infrared radiation . Greenhouse
gases trap some of the infrared radiation that escapes from the Earth, making the Earth warmer that
it would otherwise be. We can think of greenhouse gases as sort of a blanket for infrared radiation
it keeps the lower layers of the atmosphere warmer, and

The Australian and American Freedom Rides Essay
The Australian and American Freedom Rides This essay briefly discusses the similarities and
differences of the Australian and American Freedom Rides history. Throughout the essay, there is a
discussion on what the reasons were for the protest of the Freedom Rides. It also points out the
duration of the protest and the major locations where they were held. The essay also shows the
different reactions to the protest and the influential behaviour it results in. The American Freedom
Rideswere motivated by the Journey of Reconciliation in 1947, led by civil rights activists Bayard
Rustinand George Houser 1. The Freedom Rides in America involved riding a bus opposing the

The duration of the American Freedom Rides occurred mainly in May 1961. Unlike in America,
the Freedom Rides in Australia took place later on the 12th February 19659; when the University of
Sydney students rode into the towns in northern New South Wales which contained large
Aboriginal populations 10. One of the main towns mentioned was at Moree; where they protested in
swimming pools, attracting a lot of violence. The Freedom Rides also passed through Wellington,
Gulargambone, Lismore, Bowraville and Kempsey. The duration of the Australian Freedom Rides
occurred mainly in February 1965.
In America, the reaction to the protest was very intense. Throughout the protest, the Freedom
Riders came across violence and the reaction of the protest was ruthless. While having to delay
their journey to change a slashed tire, one bus was firebombed and the Freedom Riders were
beaten (by a white mob). The second bus was similarly attacked and the passengers beaten .11 In
America, there was a Freedom Ride accompanied by the State Highway Patrol, taking their journey
headed for Montgomery; but when local police failed to protect them, they were again beaten 12.
Similar to America, the Freedom Rides in Australia gained publicity when the students were set
upon by angry crowds and placed under police protection 13. The students pressed into the
entrance of the Moree swimming pool, at the same time a furious crowd booed and catcalled 14.

Domestic Violence And Drugs And Crime
Violence and drugs are typical factors of a crime related lifestyle. Drug users may not take part in
legitimate economy and are exposed to situations that encourage crime so the odds and frequency
of association in illegal activity is increased ( Fact, 1994). Drugs effect the behavior of users and
often time generates violence and can snowball into many other poor decisions. In Centervale,
California, domestic violenceis not taken lightly. Independently, domestic violence is an extremely
serious matter but adding other violations to the list of charges, the offender is staring at a heavy
sentence. In this case, Abby and Bobby have been in trouble with the law and this incident outside
their home may be what puts them both away for a very long time.
My officer and I received a call to respond to a domestic abuse situation. When we arrived at the
scene, Abbey and Bobby appear to be having an altercation outside of their house. There is blood
trickling down the side of Abby s head that she seemed to be oblivious to, her speech is garbled,
and Bobby has scratches all over on his hands and face. With this incident continuing outside and
the physical evidence, it has granted probable cause for an arrest. Probable cause is defined as facts
and circumstances that would lead a reasonable person to believe that there is evidence of a crime
located at a particular place or on a person (Argosy University Online, 2017). Both Abby and Bobby

Benefits Of Performance Related Pay
Introduction
It can be said that performance related pay has been motivating employees who works in
companies/organisations from small to big, hence the distribution of bonuses definitely need to be
taken into account. A bonus is an extra compensation given to an employee above his/her normal
wage. A bonus also could be used as a reward for accomplishing specific goals set by the company,
or for devotion to the company. However Performance related pay methods has broaden up into
different topics, Individual performance pay and group performance pay being the most common
methods. This essay will therefore discuss not only just identifying both distribution methods, but
its relationship between one and another. Also, preferred ideals which... Show more content on

In conclusion, prosocial bonuses can have a causal impact on employee satisfaction and
performance, and a greater organizational impact which benefits all (Anik et al 2013).
For and against distribution of bonuses based on self performance basis
Advantages and disadvantages of distributing bonuses to individuals are broad, but just basing on
statistics won t reveal the sustainability of performances from employees in the long run. Firstly,
organisations such as the food industry tend to reward their individuals PRP, Performance related
Pay, especially to roles such as sales and marketing (Wilkinson 2015). By giving bonuses for
individuals unlocks a counterproductive spectrum inside the employee, hence making the
workplace to a much more competitive environment. However after further research done by
Journal of Business Research , it concludes with an opposite result. Distributing bonuses in Groups
has a higher chance to product more cooperative, team work mindset imbedded into their
employees compared to individual performances (Wilkinson 2015). Should every organisation
change the way of distributing bonuses? No, Performance related pay plans are essentially
ubiquitous, but they come with a price. Organisations (e.g. Motorola) ended up spending millions
of dollars in PRP plans, and the outcome viewed like investment is increasing. With the

Fair Time Is A Great Time For The City
Fair Time The Alabama National Fair in Montgomery, Alabama is a great time for the city. It
provides us residents with a good time that we don t reallt get to experience on the regular. Even
though the rides are broke down, and most of the time not even safe at all. It still can put a smile
on someones face to know that fair will be in town soon. Something that the fair can offer that s
actually something people run to the gates for is the wonderful greasy food. I have searched
high and low, and the only place that I can find a good foot long corndog is at the fair. The fair will

When I am in the middle of the midway, I do not know where to go there are so many things to
choose from. I literraly need a full day to go to this fair because it is just that good. I could either
go get a wristband to have unlimited rides or I could just get tickets to ride a limited amount of
times. It is already known that the wristband is the best way to go if one wants to really enjoy
themselves at the fair. Who would not want to go on the these faboulous dangerous rides more
than once? Definitely not me. I always get the wristband. The first thing I always do is of course
I go to the broke down rides and test them out. One would look at these rides and make the quick
assumption of, I would not dare step a foot on this dangerous looking ride. But once that person
does get on the ride they can have a really fun time. When I see a person on one of these fair
rides, I always see them smiling, and having fun. Unless the ride is making them sick so I
quickly turn away. So the sterotype of fair rides being boring and not fun are completely false in
my opinion. After the rides before I get to the food I have to make it through the midway, and
listen to the workers of the fair games yelling at me to play their games. I m a competiotor so I
have to give some of these games a shot. The games at the fair are obviously rigged, prime
example is the basketball shot. A regular standard basketball rim is not as

American Homefront During World War II Essay
The American home front during World War II is recalled warmly in popular memory and cultural
myth as a time of unprecedented national unity, years in which Americans stuck together in
common cause. World War II brought many new ideas and changes to American life. Even though
World War II brought no physical destruction to the United States mainland, it did affect American
society. Every aspect of American life was altered by U.S. involvement in the war including
demographics, the labor force, economics and cultural trends. During the Great Depression, the
American birth rate had fallen to an all time low due to delayed marriages and parenthood. In the

The climate and scenery appealed to many servicemen that had been stationed in the West, and
after the war many relocated there permanently with their families. During the 1940 s wartime
production required more factory workers. With the majority of males being enlisted into the
military and the work force depleted, minorities and women found many opportunities during the
war. For most, involvement became an adventure, a way that every citizen could feel he or she
was making an important contribution to the war effort (Duis, 20). While most women were
married, they worked to keep themselves busy while the males were off at war. Prior to the war
only about one fourth of women worked outside of the home (Bard, 173). By 1945, women made
up 36% of the nation s total workforce (Schultz). After the war, women were advised to leave work
and continue their more traditional role of wife and mother. African Americans improved their
economical standing by accepting war industry positions and through their migration from the
south; some became professionals and skilled workers, yet still facing harsh discrimination. There
was a high commitment of immigrant workers to the war effort that participated heavily in war
bond and scrap metal collection drives. Like African Americans, these immigrants were also
subjected to racial prejudice. But overall, America enjoyed full employment and a higher standard
of living

  • 2. Advantages Of The Confederate Flag The Confederate Flag Debate in Today s Society The confederate flag has always been a symbol that has caused much controversy. It has been called a symbol of pride, also a symbol of hate. Many people wonder why it is still seen in today s society or why it causes so much tension if it is just a flag to some. The flag has bisected the country for a long time (Kozlowska, 2014). It is a definite border between some citizens and a huge social problem. It has caused issues for decades and still carries on racial slurs, white power, and bad morals. Nonetheless the information provided compares both sides of the debate. Research over whether or not the confederate flag is racist or a symbol of pride has been conducted for many years now and it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Likewise, the people who are confederate ignorant play a problem to society. Learning about the reasons why is it a social problem gives a deeper understanding of where each individual comes from. Negative societal issues regarding the Confederate Flag Now this was a common research scenario and many felt that it had no connotation to their life or lifestyles. However, some were deeply hurt by the flag. In the article by Wallace Best he states, Mama suggested that she had never seen the Confederate flag during her years in the South because the community in which she lived was strictly segregated, and few people, black or white, ever crossed the line (Best, 2001, p. 14. Surely this portrays that the flag to them was a sign of racial segregation and power. The whites were powerful over the flag and many African American s failed to see it. It was seen as stepping out of place for the blacks. (Best, 2001). Blacks and whites were not cohesive in being together. Even though the confederate flag stands by two different sides in society, actions were not taken upon until recently. It happened when racial actions and hate became more prevalent through society. An example that was shown through research was in South Carolina. This state struggled with deciding to keep or remove the flag. The debate over whether the battle flag should remain flying on public space went on for fifteen years ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Diversity In Alaska In my opinion, the best place to visit (between Florida and Alaska), would be Alaska. Alaska is not only vast in terrain, but its wildlife is even more pulchritudinous than Florida. Also, there is culture that I have not yet learned. New culture brings diversity. By including diversity within our lives we are opening our minds to a brighter/happier life. Alaska has many places, the most interesting are its national parks. These national parks are: Wrangell St. Elias National Park, and Glacier Bay National Park. First of all, Alaska is a place that has beauty under the ice... The number one place to go when at Glacier Bay National Park, is to see Margerie Glacier. (glacier grows up to ten feet daily) In conclusion, I would visit Alaska and its National Park s. There are many, but also, its riveting to go somewhere new. By going somewhere new, we as people are opening our hearts and minds to diversity. Diversity may sound clichГ©, but it does have its traits. If I were to travel to Alaska its national parks would be the first place(s) I would turn to (as a recreational activity/educational activity). • 6. Difference Between Health And Social Class Variations in health and inequality have always been the subject of debates and studies throughout the last century; explanations varied from: our lifestyles, our ethnicity, and even our gender. So why after 100 years of studying this worldwide phenomenon, and producing detailed statistical evidence, with well informed debates are we still living in a society where inequality in healthstill exists? One would expect with so much progress in medicine, vast improvements in our living /housing standards; raised awareness and understanding of issues relating to our cultural and genetic profiles, that this inequality would be on par with how society has overcome other inequalities including race and gender. Have we done enough by trying to explain this in terms of the Genetics, Cultural, or Material variants? Or are they all correct, and this kind of inequality in our society is something that is inevitable? Health and ill health on the basis of Cultural/Behaviour is explained as having direct relationships with social class and how their actions determine their health. According to (Bourdieu 1984) Life expectancy amongst people in high social class standing was because of their inclination towards a cult of health consciousness and their appearance of the body: the body as a thing displayed to others...and a high value being placed on moderate drinking and careful diet. A lot of people with chronic pain become depressed because they can t move or do simple tasks without being in a great amount of pain. Chronic pain can be caused by osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic headaches, rheumatoid arthritis, and neuropathic pain, which is caused by injury to tissues or nerves. Physical therapy helps chronic pain patients become stronger, so they re able to move better. Physical therapy can also teach people how to move safely and function better than they used to with chronic pain. Exercisecan involve walking on a treadmill or swimming in a pool. Physical therapy helps to build strength in the muscles, builds endurance, stability in the joints, and flexibility in the muscles and joints. Keeping a regular exercise routine will also help control chronic pain. Regular exercise from physical therapy will help people maintain the ability to move and function properly, and prevent people from becoming disabled by their chronic pain. Henry III s In Defense of Elitism and Caroline Bird s College is a Waste of Time and Money , it is clear that Henry s argument concerning the purpose of an education is more rational than Bird s due to the fact that Henry supports his claims with credible statistics, logical insight, and uses current real world scenarios. As wasteful as it may seem, college graduates working in fields that don t even require a degree is indeed a trend today. It reminds me of a close family friend of mine who graduated from the University of California, Riverside in 2000 as a math major. Today he is working as a private investigator for an insurance company. This job not only lacks the requirement of a four year college degree, but can actually be obtained rather quickly by simply enrolling in a six week training program. It is certainly not fair to simply categorize my friend in Henry s group of mediocrities just yet, but it is safe to say that he would have been better off not going to college in the first place. In his case, Henry s claim that college may well be a credential without being a qualification (333) is confirmed. While Henry makes his claims with regards to rationality, Bird attempts to undermine the thinking of her readers by overdramatizing her claims and then trying to support them with manipulated statistics. Her simple argument is that too many students are in college for the wrong reasons and therefore they are wasting their time and money. Unfortunately, her approach and lines of reasoning for various claims are not so simple. Bird expresses her feelings that she is overwhelmed by the prevailing sadness on American campuses (324). ... • 10. The Really Big One By Kathryn Schulz The Really Big One is an article by Kathryn Schulz about the Cascadia Subduction Zone, a fault line that runs seven hundred miles along the West Coast. It consists of two tectonic plates where one plate is sliding underneath another. In this case, the oceanic plate Juan de Fuca is sliding under the continental plate known as the North American plate. In her article, Schulz repeats the words of seismologists and scientists alike in the opinion that the Cascadia Subduction Zone is overdue for a magnitude 9.0 or higher earthquakeand resulting tsunami. No one in the Pacific Northwest is prepared for it. With historical stories and examples from around the world Schulz warns of the damage to be done when the Really Big One finally makes itself known. In her article, Schulz uses three rhetorical appeals. These appeals are called Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. Aristotle, the Greek philosopher, created these terms to refer specifically to the different ways they appeal to the reader. Ethos is used to establish credibility, Pathos refers to emotion, and Logos is the appeal to logic. While the article is packed full of history, science and facts, it s the appeal to emotion that really draws in the readers and instills curiosity and a desire for action. Schulz s article is split into five sections. The first section introduces the readers to Chris Goldfinger, a paleoseismologist at Oregon State University. • 11. Mental Representation Of Critical Discourse Analysis Mental representation in Critical Discourse Analysis Levels of analysis This phrase is applied to social sciences to point to the location, size or scale of a research target. It is unique from the term unit of observation as the former relates to an integrated set of relationships while the latter is about the distinct unit from which data will be gathered. The levels of analysis are not mutually exclusive but an in critical discuss analysis research generally falls under micro level and the macro level of analysis. Macro versus micro level of analysis The usage of language, discourse communication, and verbal interaction belong to the micro level of the social order. On the other hand, powered, dominance and inequality between social groups are concepts that relate to the macro level of analysis. Critical discourse analysis bridges the gap between the micro and macro level of analysis that get to be a sociological construct in its own right. The macro and micro levels of interactions integrate into being one whole that is unified. For example, a racist remark in parliament is a discourse at the micro level of the social interaction but at the same time, it may also constitute a part of legislation or reproduction at racism at the macro level. A Critique of Chapter 11 in Neil Postman s Technopoly Essay A Critique of Chapter 11 in Neil Postman s Technopoly In chapter 11 (The Loving Resistance Fighter) of the book Technopoly, published in 1992, Neil Postman focuses on a solution to the problems created by Technopoly. A Technopoly (a word postman capitalizes throughout the book) is a society that no longer merely uses technology as a support system but instead is shaped by it. Postman proposes that we become loving resistance fighter(s) who retain the narratives and symbols that once made the United States the hope of the world (p.182). He believes education is to lead the resistance against technology by changing the curriculum to help restore a sense of meaning and purpose lost to the Technopoly.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In chapter 11 Postman gives examples of people who resist the American Technopoly. An example of a resistance fighter is a person who ignores a poll unless they know the questions asked and why. As Postman introduced in chapter 8 ( Invisible Technologies ), the form of a question can produce many different answers. It may also restrict us from seeing solutions to problems that may become visible through a question worded differently. Postman shares the story of two priests who write the Pope asking if it was allowable to smoke and pray at the same time. One priest phrased the question Is it permissible to smoke while praying? and the response was no because praying should be the focus of ones attention; the other priest asked Is it permissible to pray while smoking? and the response was yes, since it is always appropriate to pray. The opinion of almost any issue is a function of the question asked. In the American Technopoly the opinion poll is a strict yes or no answer to an unexamined question. One is therefore unable to share their knowledge and is easily mislead to answer a question in a certain way. Another example of a resistance fighter is a person who does not allow psychology or any social science to pre empt the language and thought of common sense. This example clearly relates to chapter 9 ( Scientism ), in which Postman expresses his annoyance of the many people who have a strong ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Abbasid Revolution The Abbasid Revolution The Abbasid Dynasty, known to its supporters as the blessed dynasty , which imposed its authority on the Islamic empire in 132/750, claimed to inaugurate a new era of justice, piety and happiness. The Abbasids maintained the hereditary control of the caliphate, forming a new dynasty. The alliance with the Shiites was short lived, and the Abbasids became champions of Sunni orthodoxy, upholding the authority of their family over that of Ali, and continuing the subjugation of the Shiites. Even Abu Muslim, the popular leader who more than any other single individual was the architect of the Abbasid victory, was put to death by the second Abbasid Caliph, Al Mansur. However, the Abbasids did prove loyal to their Persian mawali allies. In fact, Abbasid culture would come to be dominated by the legacy of Persian civilization. The Abbasid court was heavily influenced by Persian customs, and members of the powerful Persian Barmakid family acted as the advisers of the caliphs and rivaled them in wealth and power. One of the earliest and most important changes the Abbasids made was to move the capital of the Islamic empire from the old Umayyad power base of Damascus to a new city Baghdad. Baghdad was founded in 762 by al Mansur on the banks of the Tigris River. The city was round in shape, and designed from the beginning to be a great capital and the center of the Islamic world. The pathetic city drunks and the pitiful alcoholic parents of the warm water sisters, Junior, Thomas, and Victor ring like wake up calls to the social problems faced by the Indian people. The representation of alcoholism in the text, Reservation Blues, highlights a stereotypical social image of the drunken Indian. It is a dilemma for not only Alexie, but the Native writers in general:... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Despite the verisimilitude of Alexian portrayal of alcoholism and its impact upon the lives of the Native Americans, Alexie does not aim to put the social problems of economic instability, poverty, or cultural oppression into perspective (Coyhis, pp. 157 66). Instead, alcoholism and drinking are sensationalized: Lester is the most accomplished drunk on the Spokane Reservation (Schmidt, 2011), a notoriety that wins him tribal hero status. Victor, incapable of coping with rejection, turns to the bottle for solace like a tragic failed artist. Sherman Alexie deals with the problem of alcohol in his work, as it is something inherent to the American Indians. Maybe, the reason is that alcoholism was a big problem in his family. For example, in his short story, The Only Traffic on the Reservation Doesn t Flash Red Anymore of the novel The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, he tells the story of a young boy who is considered a reservation basketball star, but his promising future is destroyed by alcohol. Although this treaty did not last forever, and the northern seven provinces eventually became free and independent, forming the Dutch Republic, this was a victory for the Catholic Church, seeing as the treaty lasted until the end of the reformation period. A viewer is supposed to find something in themselves much like exploring a city and figuring things out for one s own self interest. Mehretu is quoted as saying my aim is to have a picture that appears one way from a distance almost like a cosmology, city, or universe from afar but then when you approach the work, the overall image shatters into numerous other pictures, stories, and events. Historically drawing is seen as inferior to paintingwhich makes it interesting that Julie Mehretu would employ so much drawing into her canvases because drawing is important to architectural drawings. How does the mapping nature of Julie Mehretu s paintings convey a sense of identity in a very political nature and how is it a representation of the post colonialist world in which we inhabit? Scholars all seem to agree that Mehretu s canvases are maps, but what do they seek to accomplish? The Renegado reflects on the anti Turkish sentiments during seventeenth century England as though to undermine alluring and domineering influence of the Turkish culture, while demonstrating the spiritual superiority of Christianity. Massinger conjures the image of a repentant renegade in the form of the pirate Grimaldi. Grimaldi, like the his fellow literary renegades undergoes a spiritual change in which he converts back to Christianity, unveiling Islams failure in retaining its converts and the ChristianGod s punishment of those who rejected Him (Matar 492). • 37. The Effect Of Natural Selection i.Evolution refers to change over time due to natural selection as organisms adapt and diverge to produce multiple descendant species (Huxley L., Walter M., 2005, p. 698). Two pillars which form the basis of all current knowledge of evolution originate from the historical record of evolutionary change, fossil record and the study of the process of evolutionary change, specifically the effect of natural selection. Recent developments in science, including molecular and developmental biology, have greatly contributed to the understanding of biological diversity and how evolution has changed multiple species, particularly the humanspecies (Losos J., 2014, pp. 3). ii. The concept of natural selection was partially introduced by naturalist Charles Darwin in 1859 when he proposed and provided scientific evidence to describe evolution as the idea that all species have evolved over time from common ancestors through the process of natural selection. To survive in a particular environment, Darwin s theory proposes that natural selection is the mechanism where organisms must possess attributes that increase their chance of survival in that environment (Chidrawi G., Robson M., Hollis S., 2010, pp 114). Therefore, there will be a tendency for these attributes to be perpetuated and other less appropriate attributes to be lost from the population over successive generations (Huxley L., Walter M., 2005, pp. 698, 704). iii. The author of the novel Brave New World, published in 1932, Huxley creates a dystopian science fiction novel in which a futuristic society must be stabilized, kept together by conditioning the individual. The novel bares a resemblance to advancing technology in the modern day world, particularly the video gameindustry. Video game addiction is a growing epidemic that is running rampant through the world, including parts of Asia. Death from video games is becoming more common and sounds like a horror story (Flanagan). Contributing to the increase are illnesses and social disorders, two well known conditions being social anxiety and depression. By shutting themselves out from the real world, the only light being the screen of their television or computer and eyes glued to the screen, their basic needs are ignored. Sitting in a chair for hours on end, the body deteriorates from negligence. The different video game genres help fulfill basic psychological needs too, but can lead to a secret underlying problem. The Black Cat took readers into the mind, understanding the thoughts and actions of what is assumably a schizophrenic person. • 42. Beowulf As A Epic Hero A hero is defined in Merriam Webster as a ...legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability...who shows great courage . In order for someone to be recognized as a hero, they must demonstrate bravery and stand up for what is fair and just, even when they face conflict. Most traditional heroes are chivalrous and selfless, but in some cases, the hero desires power, fortune, and a high status, which makes him focus on his own advantages without much concern for others. During the Anglo Saxon to Medieval period in Britain, heroes changed from acting selfishly to nobly as exemplified by Beowulf and Arthur. Beowulf is a legendary hero, whom people have told many stories about, but he is also extremely selfish. When Beowulf is stopped and questioned by the watchman about his soldiers and past life, he states that his father was a famous soldier, known far and wide as a leader...men all over earth surely remember him still (Beowulf 27). By telling the watchman this, he brags about his distinguished father and his superiority, proving that Beowulf himself should also be highly regarded. This is one of the first moments in the story the reader notices Beowulf s boastful and egoistical character. In addition, Beowulf does not seek to conceal his desire for praise. He boasts of his exploits with a child s simplicity of enjoyment because he craves recognition of his impressive feats (McNary). Author Sarah McNary conveys that heroes of this time only ... Whether lease should be classified as finance/capital leases or operating leases, has essential influences on other issues such as capitalisation of finance/capital leases and disclosure of operating leases by lessees. Without a clear distinction between a finance/ capital lease and an operating lease, it is unlikely that the lessee be required to capitalise the lease. This has led to inconsistent accounting for arrangements that meet the definition of a lease and similar arrangement that do not. According to AASB 117, the operating lease structure is a form of off balance sheet accounting, which means the lease obligation is not reported as a liability on the balance sheet. Critics claims that as a result of desirability of operating lease classification, lease parties commonly structure leases in such a way to avoid capital lease accounting by a thin margin and uses it as a source of off balance sheet financing This is a source of unrecognised financing and it can be difficult for users to understand. Moreover, the adjustments are inconsistent and frequently understate the lease obligations. It is extremely disheartening if those who claim to have the guide to moral living are just as dishonest and coldhearted as anyone else. It discredits Christianity s claim of having a better way. For example, let s say that it is discovered that a person who has always attended church and openly claimed Christianity has been embezzling funds from their company. Many people would be even more angry that he was hiding behind the front of being a good, honest Christian than if someone who had not laid claim to those values was discovered in the same crime. If people cannot trust Christians who claim to be moral, whom can they trust? Is there anything that deems a person or group of people trustworthy? Hypocrisy among Christians can cause these kinds of ideas to grow. Christians are commanded in the Bible to take the gospel into all the world. God desires that all people know Him. These gases are called greenhouse gases and the natural process between the sun, the atmosphere and the Earth is called the Greenhouse Effect , because it works the same way as a greenhouse. The windows of a greenhouse play the same role as the gases in the atmosphere, keeping some of the heat inside the greenhouse There are two meanings of the term greenhouse effect . There is a natural greenhouse effect that keeps the Earth s climate warm and habitable.
