realism movement. William Dean Howells s Editha is a literary work that reflects this definition of
realism. Dreiser s arguments regarding the presence of immorality in literature as a precondition for
artistic honesty find an example in the actions of the protagonist of Howells s story. Theodore Dreiser s
True Art Speaks Plainly defines realism as literature that speaks the truth regardless of its moral
substance, and this definition is observable in Howells s Editha through the corrupt motivations of the

How Did Frederick Douglass Benefit From His Education
Throughout the works of Frederick Douglass there is a prominent contradiction referring to literacy. At
times, Douglass regrets his education as it makes his slavery more difficult to tolerate. Additionally, his
education opens them up to more abuse as Harriet Jacob asserts they were living in a culture of silence
(Cutter 209). Thorough examination of Frederick Douglass writing reveals various paradoxes within his
testimony regarding his literary education; while Douglass did benefit from his education in some way,
in many other ways, it shattered his spirit and lead to a lifetime of abuse.
Douglass narrative demonstrates how his literary education is both a blessing and a curse. He believed
that permitting slaves to read was a contradiction, a paradox if you will, unable to render freedom, or
provide them a legitimate education. Douglass reasoned that the education was a ploy to let African
Americans believe they were treated fairly. Douglass expresses, As I read and contemplated the subject,
behold! that very discontentment which Master Hugh had predicted would follow my learning to read
had already come, to torment and sting my soul to unutterable anguish (Douglass 1200). Douglass
