Good And Evil In Mccarthy s The Road By Mccarthy
In the book The Road by McCarthy, McCarthy dramatizes the opposition between good and evil
however, over all The Road puts forth a positive and uplifting view of humanity. Even though there
are multiple parts throughout the book that focus on very dark and pessimistic themes, McCarthy
has a way of making the reader see darkness and pessimism a positive and uplifting theme.
Scenes in The Road are very graphic and a lot of them put a very vivid image in the reader s head.
Good or bad. Not only do the scenes affect the way you read the book, but they way he makes the
reader work for what they want. While reading this book, there was a scene that described naked
people being held hostage. Huddled against the back wall were naked people, male and female, all
trying to hide, shielding their faces with their hands. On the mattress lay a man with his legs gone
to the hip and the stumps of them blackened and burnt. (110). This line in particular puts a
discrete image in your head of what may be going on in this scene and how the bad guys may be
affecting humanity. After the little boy sees this terrible sight he asks the man We wouldn t ever eat
anybody, would we? (128). The man helps him understand why the people we re being held
hostage, and why they couldn t help them.
Even though some of the negative and evil parts of the book don t have a positive outcome, there
are many points where the negative leads to the positive, and even though there has been something
bad that

Summary Of Walking For The Scared
Reading Adam Rosenblatt s book Digging for the Disappeared , in discussing the human rights of
the dead has conjured my memories with people who have disappeared after I met them during my
fieldwork in the Pakistani province of Balochistan in 2009 (1). Balochistan, a region divided
between Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, is a black hole for the global media (2). There, one of the
people that I have encountered was Qambar Chakar Baloch, an economics student at Balochistan
University of Information Technology and Management Sciences. He was abducted in July, two
months after I left, by the Pakistani intelligence ISI due to his student activism in campaigning
against the discriminatory admission policies at his university and sympathies for... Show more

The Argentinian civil war aftermath was the beginning of forensic anthropology involvement in the
politics of mass grave exhumations in 1985 by the anthropologist Clyde Snow. Digging for human
skeletal remains has always been a complicated process, as there are many stakeholders who are
concerned about the consequences of how to exhume and the cultural implications on how the dead
are treated. When scientific methods are applied in a humanitarian context, it raises many ethical
concerns and legal obligations. Human rights forensic anthropologists approach was family based
to help search for missing relatives and was further developed by the International Commission on
Missing Persons and other NGOs, in the Balkans and elsewhere. Their mission was never simple, as
it is contested between ideals and practice, between logistical differences and varying objectives of
the stakeholders. Despite the evident importance of exhumation in offering a closure for the living
relatives, the uncompromising politicization of exhumation defies that goal as it is demonstrated
through the factionalization of Plaza de Mayo s mothers in Argentine and the leftists and
nationalists in Spain. The Plaza de Mayo s mothers case raised the question of choosing between
the individualization or the collectivization of suffering in campaigning for their political rights and
their moral

Anne Frank And The Holocaust
Anne Frank is a Jewish girl who has to go into hiding during World War Two to escape from the
Nazis ... After more than two years in hiding they are discovered and deported to concentration
camps ... After her death Anne becomes world famous because of the diary she wrote while in
hiding (annefrank.org). Anne Frankwas a young girl who had a bright future, but it was taken away
from her by the Nazi s and Holocaust. Before the Holocaust, Anne Frank was just the typical young
girl. During the Holocaust, she had to adapt to a dangerous situation. Then, after her death, she has
left a legacy that has impacted the hearts of many. Through Anne Frank s early childhood years, the

It was the cause of death to nearly 11 million people, and six million consisted of Jews. The
Franks took all the precautionary measures possible to keep themselves, but they could only do so
much to defer the inevitability. The first major precaution was going into hiding. The Franks would
hide in an apartment along with another family for two years. The United States Holocaust
Memorial Museum states, During the first half of July, Anne and her family went into hiding in an
apartment which would eventually hide four Dutch Jews as well Hermann, Auguste, and Peter van
Pels, and Fritz Pfeffer (ushmm.org). In July of 1942 the Franks went into hiding. They were
unaware that they would spend two years in the secret hiding place. Biography.com writes, The
families spent two years in hiding, never once stepping outside the dark, damp, sequestered portion
of the building (biography.com). The amount of annoyance of not leaving the same place in two
years would be immense. On August 4th, 1944 the Franks and everyone with them were
discovered and arrested. Annefrank.org states, The people in hiding are caught completely off
guard. They have lived with the anxiety of being discovered for more than two years and now it is
happening (annefrank.org). It is unknown exactly how their presence was made known to the
Nazis, but it was likely that someone betrayed them. They were deported to Westerbork transit
camp, and then they

Robert Frost Fact Sheet
Frost ran through the forest at full speed. All he could see were blurs of green and brown trees.
He knew his only chance at survival was to outrun the pack, but that was not an easy task. As
Frost ran he recalled how he ended up here, he had been invited to a pack hunt. This was both very
unusual and an honor, the reason being that Frost is an omega in his pack. The packhad successfully
hunted down three large bucks. As an omega Frost was given a low ranking job, his job along
with the other omega s was to take the food home. After that they would have a feast, Frost being
ranked omega would eat last along with the other omegas. That is where Frost made his mistake,
Frost had dishonored the Alpha therefore the whole pack. Now the huntingparty that had been
assembled yesterday was hunting him, including his fellow omega friends. He knew the Alpha
must had threatened their families, otherwise they would never hunt him. Frost tries to keep

Can I use her speed as an advantage? Frost thought shyly.
Than it clicked he could use her speed to leave a false trail for the pack. Out of nowhere Frost
put on a burst of speed. As fast as his feet went down they came up, then he dead stopped. A
rushing river pounded in front of him. Frost backed up then sprang into the air, then over the river.
He hoped that Rain would be able to jump the wide river. Frost brought up another burst of speed
but stopped before he went anywhere. Rain had jumped across the river and now she stood beside
Frost.
About time you caught up. Frost joked.
Oh, please I can outrun you any day. Rain laughed.

Plum Point Park Essay
Issue Proposition Plum Point Park was once a place for sprouted overgrown weeds and rotting
piers. Through initiative and optimism, West Ghent Civic League proposed to transition the
bleak plot of land into a permanent park in the early 1990 s. 10 years and $1.5 million later, the
park is now considered an open natural refuge for local residents and home for various wildlife
living along the Elizabeth River. Granted Plum Point Park is an artificial park, there is still a lot of
potentials that the park can amount to. Due to the lack of green spaces and aesthetically appealing
areas throughout the park, the scenery can become very monotonous. In August of 2016, Global
Shapers Norfolk(GSN) produced a final report, titled #WeAre757Millenials, based on responses
from Millennials. Everything from the good, the bad, and the ugly about Hampton Roads. One of

Analysis Of The Oresteia
In the Oresteia, there is a deep relationship between characters which is necessary to understand
the role of suffering in Greek tragedy. The most profound form of this relationship is between a
mortal and an immortal. Suffering of the mortal spurns a yearning on the part of the immortal to
give assistance or guidance to the mortal, like a mother helps her child in pain. Suffering on the
part of the mortal is a vital piece to stimulate emotional response from the audience. The same, to a
lesser extent, can is also said of many other inter mortal relationships. The passions felt by the
reader because of such a relationship brings an emotional cleansing in response to the suffering of
the mortal. The role of suffering in Greek tragedyis to enable the audience to empathize with the
characters suffering through their relationships.
Relationship is defined as any two characters having any relations with each other for an end. The
relationship between Orestes and Electra is that of love and use; Electra has a love for her brother,
but also wants to use him to kill her mother. That use and love portrays to the audience a connection
that allows them to more fully understand and relate to the relationship. This happens because of
the past experiences the audience had; all men have felt both love and the want for revenge.
The harnessing of emotion in Greek theater is the most powerful tool a playwright had. To be able
to manipulate the audience and their emotions is the highest

Meeting, Demi Lovato, 21, In the perfectly landscaped land of Hollywood made it clear to me
that she really is a superstar. With her 10 Teen choice awards and her Latina attitude, she sat
opposite me with her blue locks and her winning smile, welcoming me to her office. Demi has
recently helped host a contest for the popular companies Acuvue, which hosted a 1 Day contest.
Having just heard the news that her song give your heart a break was to be appearing on Glee
and that she landed a job on X Factor, made me even more excited that I was going to be in her
presence for the next hour or so. My first impression of Demi was that she was quite shy, until
she began laughing at the noise my chair made as I nervously sat down. Embarrassing. But I
knew that I was going to like this interview. I began asking her about her experience in mentoring
the contestants throughout the contest. Her answer was motherly. She expressed that she felt
good helping them out, encouraging them to come out of their shell and to really push them
towards their dreams. She mentioned her past and how she wished that someone did that for her,
then explaining how Acuvue were really sweet to her and how they are the best contacts in the
world. With this she smiled, and coffee was brought to her mahogany table. By far the shiniest

The Price Of Happiness By Carl Richards
The Price of Happiness Does the thought of a brand new pair of shoes fill your heart with joy? If
so, would you still feel the same about those same shoes ten years from now? Most likely, the
answer to the second question is no. That is the point that Carl Richards is trying to make in the
article, The Odd Relationship between Money and Happiness. When searching for a topic to write
about, I came across this article. I found it on the New York Times website. Richards claim is that
money does not contribute to happiness, overall. This is because having money will always lead to
the desire of feeling the need to have more, whether it is luxuries or money, itself. Although I agree
with Richards up to a point, I cannot accept his overriding assumption that money does not support
happiness.
Richards article is to serve an important message: that money is not the key to true happiness. He
believes that there is not a correlation between money and happiness and that you certainly cannot
buy it. He explains that money may attempt to pursue happiness, but will fail. He points out that
there are so many people who are happier with less than what most people have. In the 6th
paragraph, Richards states, If you believe that happiness can be reduced to a functional equation
up to $75,000, then how can you explain all those stories of people around the world with very
little money and a whole lot of happiness (Richards 2)? What he means by this is that, if someone

Siren Song Analysis
Siren Song
This poem, clearly alluding to the Siren s of the tale of Odysseus, is a clear reference to Greek
mythology. In Greek mythology, the Sirens creatures whose songs were so enticing, mariners
could not resist following the music to the Sirens voices only to be killed by the ocean s ravaging
tides. This poem contains no meter and is a free verse poem. Additionally, there is no set rhyme
scheme. This poem is a siren speaking to the reader in a normal meter, nothing emphasized. The
speaker of the poem is the siren herself talking about the situation and how she is feeling. Her
voice is casual and informal and the way that she speaks is referencing the enchanting song of
the sirens. The subject of the poem is a song that attracts males and reveals that they are all the
same in that they are all attracted to a beautiful women and none can see beyond that. The tone of
this poem gives a mysterious and mystifying feel to it. In line 1, Shall I tell you the secret
alluring to the secret of how the song attracts men. Additionally, there is a satirical feel to the
sirens, calling them bird suit , feathery maniacs , and squatting on an island. The main idea of this
poem is to describe how women act in order to attract a man. It then shifts to the Siren s side of
the story of them describing how boring it gets since all men react the same way.
This poem s form is clearly adapted to its function because of the one main device that is used to
make this poem stand out. The allusion, clearly a reference to the Sirens in The Odyssey is the
siren s song itself .The sirens song represents a huge befuddle within readers, and has also been
described as the song that nobody has ever heard of because everyone who has heard it has died.
This is the most obvious and most notable allusion because according to the lure, Odysseus is tied
to the mast of the ship in order to hear the Siren s Song without jumping overboard (which is what
would normally happen due to the songs enchanting power). In this poem, one of the three sirens
tells about the song that she sings. Atwood describes in the poem that the anatomy of the song is
unknown to all mortals except the sirens themselves. Although, based on the depressing and

Secondhand Smoke Persuasive Essay
I stumbled out of a building, coughing and wheezing, smoke filled my eyes and lungs. I pulled
my tie frantically, my head beating as I ran out the entryway. I was having my supper when a
refined man at the table decided to light a cigarette. The smoke went directly to my face and lungs,
suddenly, I could not inhale, my chest hurt and I froze.
Secondhand smoke, also known as environmental tobacco smoke, is a mixture of two forms of
smoke from burning tobacco. Mainstream smoke exhaled by a smoker and Side stream smoke
from a lighted pipe, cigarette or cigar. When non smokers are exposed to secondhand smoke it is
called passive smoke and they take in nicotine and harmful elements the same way actual smokers
do. Tobacco smoke has more than... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

secondhand smoking is destructive to your family s wellbeing.
Making your homestead smoke free is the most important thing to do for the sake of the health of
your family. Any family member can develop health problems related to secondhand smoking since
we spend more time at home than any other place. Multi unit housing can be essential where
smoking is allowed, although, tobacco smoke can move through air ducts, walls and shafts,
secondhand smoke can be controlled with ventilation, air cleaning or by separation of non smokers
and smokers.
Young kids are the most affected by instances of secondhand smoke and are least able to avoid it.
Most of their exposure comes from guardians or parents smoking, studies show that children whose
parents smoke get sick more often. The children have more cases of lung infections like pneumonia
and bronchitis, are more prone to coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath and get more ear
infections. Secondhand smoke can cause asthma attacks, worsen asthmatic symptoms or result in

Surprisingly, polar bears are extremely resilient swimmers. According to Defender s of wildlife,
polar bears may be seen in open waters as far as 200 miles off shore. ( Basic facts about Polar
Bears, n.d.). One of the reasons for such behavior is, like mentioned earlier, polar bears depend
on ice. When newly frozen ice is too thin to support a polar bear s weight, the polar bear finds a
different alternative to get across. In most cases, a polar bear will break through the ice and

polar bears to do. In other words, swimming requires an immense amount of energy and as a result,

How My Design Will Help People Of All Ages
Review of Literature
Who can Use the design
My design will help people of all ages. Any gender of people can use my product. As Well as fit
anyone with just a different shoe size. My product can work not only while walking , but as well
as running, jogging, and dancing. Basically, anything that has to do with having to wear shoes. All
types of people can use/ wear my product. For example, amateurs or professionals could use my
product,as well as disabled or even first time users!
Similar Ideas and designs
Similar products to mine are the waterproof rainboots. There s not an exact or any design that
will me close to my design. The only thing found were rain boots and they were all not as good
looking and modern shoes. They were mostly had simple colors like brown and had rubber o
plastic. My design in the other hand had wax and I could any modern day shoes. The other shoes
were a specific type of shoes or design that were sort of identical to each other, and mine is a
different design. The size of my design or product is the size of any shoe. So, it can vary.
How and Why my design will work My design is going to work so when you accidently step on a
big, wet, puddle or spill a stainable drink onto your shoes, you won t have to go through the hassle
of trying to clean it off. Mostly for white or very clean shoes that are in light or bright vibrant colors.

Biography Of Chuck, An African American Male
Chuck, an African American male, was brought to my funeral home after an autopsy had been
completed on him. Chuck passed away in a car accident after his car crossed the centerline, was
hit by another car and then upon impact burned. Amazingly, Chuck got out of the car but later
died on the side of the road before help had arrived. Chuck s ability to get out the car and dying
on the side of the road led to this being an autopsy case. While preparing Chuck for his services, I
noticed that he has light discolorations on his hands and face due to his car catching on fire. This
goes to show that he suffered first degree burns. First degree burns or hyperemia is any injury
caused by heat, which produces redness of the skin. This type of burn does not present any unusual
difficulty when embalming or preparing the body. Although it is discolored, we have to be thankful
that the skin will just be red, unbroken and has no tissue destruction. For the discoloration, I used a
stronger than normal arterial injection solution as a precaution against skin slip, applied massage
cream during the embalming process and used cosmetics after embalming to help reduce the
visibility of the burns on his hands and face. The fact that Chuck has a ruptured aorta causes some
difficulties and will affect the embalming process, however embalming can still take place. A
ruptured aorta will cause the embalming fluid to fill the cavity rather than going through the arterial
system. If one

Descriptive Essay On A Trampoline
The Trampoline Have you ever noticed how some yards seem to reflect the personality of the
homeowners perfectly? The perfectionist s home seems to always be positioned in the middle of a
perfectly manicured lawn. The artist has treasures and flowers in abundance. The yard endlessly
littered with toys and bikes seems almost exclusively to belong to the parents of several youngkids.
Our house seems to be no exception. Though our yard is small and sparsely decorated, its lone
ornamentation a worn trampoline given to my siblings and me when we were still young
enough to enjoy it seems to speak volumes about my family and our day to day life. Our house
sits on the top of a hill, and the trampoline is positioned so that it seems poised to jump right to
the bottom of the incline. The net is worn and ripped in several places, hanging lower on the
poles with every passing storm. Where once the enclosure could be safely zipped is now just a
gaping hole, an old man s toothless mouth hung open in shock at his own ability to survive.
Several springs are missing and those that remain creak and groan with the slightest pressure. It s
legs have been broken through the years so that, looking at it now, one of the metal rod hover
slightly above the ground. Sitting on the front porch, staring over at the poor dilapidated toy, a
thought crosses my mind: if this trampoline were a horse, it would be shot. In the next moment, I

Unfortunately, my office setting does not vary from those classic lyrics. The text calls the
grapevine informal, yet important source of information (Robbins Judge, 2009). There are two
misconceptions I had about the grapevine idea: essentially 75% of information received by the
grapevine is true information (Robbins Judge, 2009) and gossip is rarely the source of rumors
(Robbins Judge, 2009). The interesting part of the grapevine that is particularly applicable to the
situation I described is that rumors emerge as a response to situations that are important to us,
when there is ambiguity, and under conditions that around anxiety, (Robbins Judge, 2009). The
mid shift change of staff announcement was particularly ill timed because the project was not
approved, nor were dates set for the approval; the pilot project announcement was ambiguous.
This set a motion for anxiety. The common theme with my co workers was rumors around who
was keeping his/her job and who was being let go, with many people speculating who was being
fired. This rumor was damaging not only to my co workers who were considered the outgroup
(Robbins Judge, 2009), but also to respect for the

search for techniques that challenge and improve the available industrial standards for retrieving
images from huge archives. This can be performed either by developing new competitive

require reliable models, that are efficient both in the manner of finding similar images and
reducing time complexity. The solutions provided in this research work are more compatible for
retrieving images from natural and photographic image databases and use an amalgamation of
image processing and machine learning algorithms to perform retrieval in a fast manner while

is all that matters, not the destination. I strongly agree with this opinion. It brings people closer
together, creates wonderful memories, and also creates a strong bond between you and other
people. Though the destination is what everyone really wants, the journey and the company are just
as important as well. Once you get to the end, what happens next? It is just simply the end. People
could cherish the moments that the road in the destination gives you.
To me this quote means that the road is all because it brings people closer together. When I lived
in California, my family and I went on a road trip to Oklahoma, Georgia, North Carolina, and
Minnesota to visit family members. The travel was actually really fun. The quote relates to this
situation because the journey to all four states were what brought us together and created fun.
Even though all of us were dying to finally get to our destination; especially because we were
traveling by car, we soon realized that it wasn t so bad after all. We saw lots of different things,
talked more to each other, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On our way to Georgia, we had gotten stopped by a policeman. Even though not all memories of
our journey is good but it still builds memory that we will all soon laugh at later in life. Even
though it was a serious matter, after the cop let us go, my family actually made some jokes about
it. These parts of the journey are what makes it adventurous and exciting. This time, we spent
about 15 hours in the car together. Yet, surprisingly, we all had a great time again. We all laughed,
sung songs, and took silly pictures of each other sleeping. The journey to Georgia was another
success. Without realizing it at all, we were all socializing more with each other than we usually do

Last Of The Mohicans Plot
Throughout the movie The Last of the Mohicans there were many exciting plot points, as well
as a great soundtrack. The main character, Hawkeye, was a colonial settler adopted by
Chingachgook, a Mohican, after the death of his family. Major Duncan Heyward escorts Colonel
Munro s daughters, Cora and Alice, to Fort William Henry where he is there with the British
Army. On the way to Fort William Henry, Magua, supposedly a Mohican indian allied with the
British, attacks the British Regiment with a war party of Huron Indians. It is here that Hawkeye
comes in and he and his Mohican family, Uncas and Chingachgook, save the Major and the Munro
girls. They arrive at the fort as it is under siege from the French. They meet up with their father,

Plastic Surgery Ethics Essay
Plastic surgery is a rapidly evolving field spread around the world. Plastic surgery deals with human
appearance and is becoming a more profitable business throughout the years. It is divided into two
sections, reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. An ethical dilemma that corresponds to plastic
surgery is the loss of human values patients encounter once they undergo surgery. Also, individuals
that depend on cosmetic surgery detract from patients that are in urgent need of these procedures.
The replacement of misleading values, pride and, joy through surgery creates unrealistic dreams for
patients. The patient and doctor relationship created under these circumstances is viewed as a
therapeutic purpose due to the feeling of being healed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The abuse of plastic surgery over the years has gotten out of control. Due to the high demand for
fillers, laser, and Botox, physicians perform cosmetic procedures that are non surgical with no
training. Society has unofficially banned wrinkles, fat deposits, and sun damaged skin. An ethical
concern for patients and healthcare providers is that these so called problems should be enhanced
and dealt with rather than result in aesthetic surgery. Although body image is important to certain
people, the outer image does not define a human being. The real value of a person cannot be
reduced to his/her appearance, and medicine as an art, should feel the obligation to resist these
modern ideologies and should attempt to help people get a more authentic attitude about
themselves. (Mousavi, 2010) If a person is unhappy with himself or herself, they should rely on a
more natural solution. Aesthetic surgery should only be an option for people that have suffered an
accident or born with a deformity. Having small lips, tiny wrinkles, beauty marks, or dark hair is
not a deformity, they re simply things the body produces over the years. An

Genetic Disease Is An Autosomal Dominant Neurodegenerative...
Genetic diseases are diseases that are passed on from parents to their offspring. An example of a
genetic disease which can be inherited is Huntington Disease. Huntington Disease is an autosomal
dominant neurodegenerative disorder with midlife onset characterised by psychiatric, cognitive and
motor symptoms (G. Vonsattel and DiFiglia, 1998). The statistics for HD blah blah blah Like all
genetic diseases, huntington s disease has a specific inheritance pattern.
Huntington disease is an autosomal disease this means that the defective gene does not occur on
one of the sex chromosomes but instead it occurs on one of the other 22 chromosomes (known
as autosomes). It is a also a dominant disorder so therefore only one copy of the altered gene,
passed on from a parent who has it, is necessary to cause their offspring to inherit the disease. If
one of the parents has the defective gene their offspring will have a 50/50 chance of inheriting that
gene. (See Figure 1).
If the offspring inherits the gene it is guaranteed that they will develop Huntington s disease at
some point in their life time, the disease does not skip generations. The defective gene is not
present on either of the sex chromosomes resulting in the disease being independent of gender. This
means that male and female offspring will have an equal risk of inheriting the disease. The faulty
gene (the HD gene) that is to blame for the development of huntington s disease is located on
chromosome 4 (See Figure 2), it

Speech Anxiety
MANAGING SEVERE SPEECH ANXIETY
TABLE OF CONTENTS
INTRODUCTION
CURRENT TRENDS AND APPLICATIONS
CONCLUSION
BIBILIOGRAPHY
INTRODUCTION Public speaking is often described as the most common fear in the world. It is
also something that many people are required to do. It may be to give a toast at a wedding, to
present a seminar at work, to make an argument to a local council, to receive an award or to be
interviewed by a board of directors for a job. Public speaking is something few people can avoid
and yet it continues to be a major fear. To understand this fear and how it can be managed and
prevented, the issue will now be looked at in more detail. This will begin with a definition of
public speaking anxiety and a discussion of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These thoughts are then replaced with more positive thoughts. For example, the speaker about to
begin the speech may think to themselves, I am going to bore these people. With cognitive
restructuring, the speaker can instead think to themselves, I am going to make this speech
interesting so the audience are not bored. These cognitive approaches are based on the speaker
learning to associate different emotions to the public speaking activity. Part of these approaches
involves individuals exposing themselves to public speaking situations. A more recent study has
added a new means of achieving this, by allowing the speaker to take part in public speaking
situations via virtual reality. The study concluded that creating a virtual audience the speaker
could interact with, was as effective as using a real audience (Pertaub, Slater Barker). Using
these virtual reality environments and creating a virtual good audience may become a new
method of helping the anxious speaker associate good thoughts with public speaking. For more
minor cases of public speaking anxiety, preparation and practice are common methods of
overcoming the problem. Just like many tasks, the more able a person feels about completing the
task, the less anxiety they experience. This sense of being ready and able to complete a task is
achieved by being prepared. Practice is also important, since this makes the individual

Blindness And Sight In Oedipus The King
Symbolism is often used in literature to point to bigger and more important ideas. Using one
character, action, or object to represent a more complex and meaningful idea forces readers to
look deeper into the text, and to look for more than what meets the eye. This allows more depth
and meaning to be added to the text. It acts as a webbing between the story and the theme, as it
helps to connect the two together. Sophocles, Shakespeare, and Margret Atwood used symbolism
add multiple layers of meaning to a text and to convey key ideas. Symbolism, enhances key
concepts in Oedipus the King by Sophocles, Hamlet written by Shakespeare, and the two short
stories by Margret Atwood; Hairball , and The Age of Lead , which helps to develop clear... Show

In Hairball Kat s use of shortening both her and Geralds names symbolizes a change in identity.
Kat was first Katherine, then Kathy, and then shortened to Kat. With each name change is a
new identity. Kat also changes Geralds name as she molds him into the man she believes she
wants him to be. She takes power of Gerald and over her identity as she changes their names.
When she calls him Gerald she is symbolizes her power over him and how she can change him
back to how he was before her. Goodbye, Gerald, she says. She pronounces the name with
mockery. It s a negation of him, an abolishment of him (Atwood 36). When she calls him Gerald
once again in the letter, while shortening her own name once again, she is taking back the power
she has. This symbolism is the fundamental start to the theme of power, as the symbolization of the
names Kat gives are detrimental in understanding Kat s need for power, which contributes to the

Gender Stereotypes In Taxi Driver

Robert DeNiro s character, Travis Bickle, experiences life in the big city as a taxi driver. As the
movie progress he encounters people and situations that affect Travis both physically and mentally.
Martin Scorsese directed the film making it a great success in the 1970 s. In order to make the film
successful he utilized a series of film elements. Scorsese made use of camera components, repetition
of music, gender stereotypes, character development and old fashioned references. Through the use
of these film components, Scorsese accomplished a renowned film that continues to be spoken

By using panning it exhibits setting, important props to the scene, and detail. One reoccurring
theme Scorsese displayed in his film was jazz music. After most important scenes a specific jazz
melody would play to tie all the events in the film together. For instance, after Travis had drank
coffee with Betsy the jazz music would play. The jazz rendition would also play in the
background while he narrates the story. Although the main importance of inserting the jazz music
after most scenes and in the background during narration, Scorsese also added the music for
dramatic effect. As Travis left the prostitutes home he saw her pimp walking towards him from a
dark hallway. The jazz music suddenly became more dark and frightening implying that he was the
bad guy in the situation. The reoccurring theme of the jazz rendition was a significant film aspect
that both tied the events of the film together and proposed a change in tone of the film. Scorsese
film Taxi driver displayed distinct messages through gender stereotypes, old fashioned references
and character development. Throughout the film sexual references towards woman had been made
not only through the dirty movies but through characters as well. The audience often sees Travis
return to a diner where all of his taxi friends are eating. Every time the camera shows his friends

Teachers College
Reflecting on Practice: using learning journals in higher and continuing education Langer (2002)
central focus is plainly stated in the introduction, which is how the use of journals impacted the
learning process of adult non traditional students and how this impact compared to that of
traditional students .
The purpose of this article critique is to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the Langer (2002)

However, the use of learning journals in technology fields in higher education among non
traditional students is lacking. From these statements the reviewer can determine that the review of
literature is appropriate and critically analyzes published learning journals by the use of summaries
and comparisons.
The methodology section was explained in sufficient detail. It allowed its readers to address the
research questions/problems. Langer (2002) uses two principle modes of inquiry, which are: review
of learning journals submitted by students; and interviewing selected students who completed the
course. The population was identified and selected by using three components in the process. The
interview guide that was provided to two researchers, and not the interviewees, is an indication that
the results would prove reliable. The results from the interviews allowed the researchers to further
assess the significance and relative successes of the participant journals.
The results and findings were clearly explained and examined all aspects of the study. Langer
(2002) gives a clear table indicating the demographic variables of ten students who took part in the
study. The nine interview questions offered a review of how the students responded toward the use
of journals in the course. Some common themes emerged from the journal readings and interview
question responses. The implications of the results and findings were

Why Did Japan Attack Pearl Harbor
Why were the Japanese so successful when they attacked Pearl Harbor?
Almost 8am on December 7, 1941, around 360 Japanese planes attacked the American naval
base at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu Hawaii. The attack lasted only two hours, but it was a huge
disaster. The Japanese destroyed almost 20 American naval vessels, including eight enormous
battleships, and more than 300 airplanes. More than 2,000 Americans soldiers and sailors died in
the attack, and another 1,000 were wounded. The day after the attack President Franklin D
Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan. Congress said yes to his question with just one
down vote. Three days later Japan s allies Germany and Italy also declared war on the United States
, and again Congress did the same. More than two years into the war, the United States had
finally joined World War II. I believe that the reason why Japan was so successful in attacking
Pearl Harbor was because the day of the attack was on an unexpected day and time for such a huge
conflict, also because the United States was not prepared for an ... Show more content on

The Political Strategy Of Versailles And Versailles
Just as he did with his ballet performances, Louis continued to infuse theatricality into his
political strategy by creating spectacles that captured his nobles attention and demonstrated their
king s immense power to them. Principally, there was Versailles, which represents the most
tangible example of Louis use of spectacles to establish and flaunt power. In Louis political
strategy of utilizing spectacle, perception was reality, and he used France s perception of him to
validate and reinforce the reality of his power. Versailles represented a concrete way to
constantly remind his potential enemies some of whom were nobles that he forced to live with
him in Versailles after the Fronde of his power. Versailles represented luxury and extravagance
on the grandest scale. The Primi Visconti described that there is no mine in the world as valuable
as Versailles. The grandeur of Versailles reflected and reinforced the grandeur of Louis, thereby
building up his power, because Versailles was Louis in a sense. Just as Louis was the Sun King,
Versailles was the sun palace, brimming with solar symbolism. Again, art became potent political
propaganda. Furthermore, Louis used Versailles to throw magnificent parties, spectacles that
served as tools to control his nobles conception of their monarch. In short, Versailles was festivity
remembered. The most famous of these parties, The Pleasures of the Enchanted Isle, occurred in
1664. This festival told the story of a sorceress who enchants a troupe of knights, and the function
of the festival itself followed much the same storyline. Through the extravagance of the festival,
Louis much like the sorceress enchanted his court with a dizzying series of fascinating spectacles
[that] demonstrated the magic of royal power. While Versailles and its accompanying festivities
represented artistic means through which Louis reinforced his power, he also utilized more
practical spectacles. During his reign, Louis grew the French army tremendously from only a few
thousand men to over 100,00 men in peacetime and over 400,000 men in war time. Obviously, this
growth had practical reasons, as a bellicose ruler demands a large army, but it also demonstrates
Louis innate ability

For example the hover boards, phone accessories, jewelry, lipsticks, makeup, etc. In our generation
everyone thinks that if you have the latest gadget or trend you are popular, but that is where
everyone misses the point. In reality none of these things matter, what really matters is your

With desktop fabricating, surgeons can produce mockups of parts of their patient s body which

just hours. It allows designers and developers to go from flat screen to exact part. Nowadays
almost everything from aerospace components to toys are getting built with the help of desktop
fabricators. desktop fabricating is also used for jewelry and art, architecture, fashion design, art,
architecture and interior design. For more personal printing, recreational item for hobbyists are
made. Things like missing board game pieces, plastic cups, other home essentials, and cool
collectibles impossible to build conventionally like asymmetrical tops. Most domestic desktop
fabricators are priced from 250$ 2000$ and is definitely a worthy investment for hobbyists and
inventors. The best part is that any person can learn desktop fabricating and CAD (meaning

How Did The War Poet And War Poetry
The war poet and war poetry in general were terms used firstly within context of the World War
I.. From the beginning of the war times, poetry was written mostly by civilians, not by poets.
Such poetry had no established identity. It was later, between 1914 and 1918 when this type of
poetry acquired notion of genre, and so called soldier poets became a species. Enormous increase
in writing poetryrelated to the war occurred. War poetry became very realistic, describing
situation as it was perceived by participants and soldiers. Genre of war poetry was really powerful
it could dramatize, energize and inspire language used in poetry. (DAS,2013,n.p) After the war
poetry came the postwar one, that replaced it. Postwar years after the 1945 witnessed a profound
changes in the cultural, social and political fields. Illustrating the situation it was the rise and fall of
the welfare, manifesto of the Irish republic, British power over Scottish parliament and other
transformations in Britain. Nor poetry remained intact, the literature in Britain has changed as well.

everything terrible it reminds us of the good traits inside people, and humanity in mankind. .
Postwar poetry changed from earliest forms from addressing to reader your point of view, to
egoistic I perspective. This second type is seen in Thomas and Barkers poetry in their highly
individualistic technique of writing. Works of poetry from Thomas and Barker do something more.

Gender Differences In Non-Traditional Occupations
Christine Williams broadens themes developed in Gender Differences At Work: Women and Men
in Non Traditional Occupations (Berkeley: University of California, 1989), a comparison between
the effects on male nurses and female marines of working in gendered occupations , to be
traditionally allied by reason of similarities in their historical development and in their gender
composition . Her interviews provide fascinating evidence of how both men and women are
subtly socialized into professional gender ideology. Gender roles are based on society s values and
beliefs about interactions between individuals. The appropriate behavior is then expected from the
specific gender. The reason behind this is, our knowledge system, in which we grew up

Mosquito Flying Optimization ( Mfo )
Mosquito Flying Optimization (MFO)
Subtitle as needed (paper subtitle)
Md. Alauddin,
Assistant Professor,
Deptt. of Petroleum Studies, AMU, Aligarh, India
Abstract This is a new optimization algorithm which mimic the behavior of mosquito to find a hole
in mosquito net, if any. Both the flying and sliding motion of the mosquito have been modelled and
incorporated in the algorithm. The algorithm was tested for global minima on different type of
benchmark functions of various dimension and modality. Namely Gramacy Lee, Ackley, Rastrigin,
Rosenbrock, Griewank and Schwefel functions of one, two, five, ten and thirty dimensions. The
experiment was done with thirty different seeds generated randomly for each function and
dimension. The algorithm was found to be efficient, convergent and accurate.
Keywords Evolutionary algorithm, MFO, PSO, GA, ACO, Benchmark optimization function
I: Introduction
Optimization can be defined as the search for the best possible solution(s) to a given problem. For
this, there are a number of optimization techniques both conventional and new meta heuristics. The
conventional methods are gradient based which are although quite faster in convergence, but are
not applicable for discontinuous, non differentiable and complex multimodal functions. These
techniques have limitations to find the global optima and have general tendency to stuck at local
optima as they start with a single point. Hence there are exhaustive search methods to tackle

My Favorite Moment Research Paper
My favorite moment was in the gym when my class got to play. In my gym class I saw many of
my friends from last year in sixth grade. We decided to play a 3 on 3 game of basketball. Donovan
and Marcus were team captains Donovan picked Jaden and I and Marcus picked Brandon and
Charles. So we started playing and Marcus s team got ball because Jaden picked first, So Marcus
passed the ball inbound to Brandon and Brandon dribbled down court for a layup. POW! Jaden
blocked Brandon s shot and it went flying to Donovan, then Donovan ran down the court
dribbling and got an easy layup the score was 2 0. Charles passed it inbound to Marcus and Marcus
passed it back to Charles and Charles called for a screen and Brandon set one and Charles got open

Dependency Theory vs Modernization Theory
While the explanations of underdevelopment differed, experts such as Brooks and Hallward
viewed the natural disaster in Haiti to be so destructive mainly due to its poverty. By diminishing
the level of poverty in countries such as Haiti, it is possible to make them less vulnerable to many
of the problems they face. To reduce povertyit is important for societies to accept development
strategies. What exactly is development and how can it be achieved? Development is a process in
which we attempt to bridge the gap between developed and underdeveloped nations by means of an
imitative process through which less developed countries gradually assume the quality of
industrialized nations (Canel). It occurs from our ability to imagine, theorize,... Show more content

In the analysis of the differences between the Dependency and Modernization Theory, it is
important to primarily point out the disagreement between both theories on the causes of
underdevelopment. The Modernization Theory believes that underdevelopment is a product of the
traditions and culture of countries. The argument made by David Brooks for the situation in Haiti
is one example which portrays the views of this theory. He considers the religion and culture as
constraints for Haiti to come out of its poverty. In his article he states that the voodoo religion
followed by the Haitians spreads the message that life is capricious and planning futile. Theorists
such as Lipset and Harrison claim development can only be achieved if people change their views
from traditional to modern. A traditional view, according to them, is one in which life is integrated
in the family, where much importance is given to status and where people themselves limit growth.
A modern view, on the other hand, is one where the individual comes first and growth is encouraged
in all ways. In contrast, the Dependency Theory blames the developed world for the
underdevelopment of the poor countries. In other words, this approach believes that the economic
dependency which exists between the North and South is the cause of underdevelopment.
Supporters of this theory believe that the relationship between the developed and underdeveloped
world is based on exploitation,

Stink Fish
Street art is commonly seen all over the world, and you can often see this form of art on
downtown building walls. This street painting by Stinkfish, a Colombian street artist, delivers a
colorful piece of art for the public to see. Stinkfish did not give a name to this piece because he
selects random spots to create his masterpieces. The painting is a girl s side profile view of her
face and head. The view beside the face has many colorful shapes and figures that can symbolize
many things happening in her head all the time. There is one simple side of this artwork which is
the girl s face. The more vibrant side of this artwork can be viewed as what is painted beside the
face, which is filled with many colors and different shapes. These colors... Show more content on

Looking at the top of the face, viewers can see one large eye and a tiny bit of the other eye. The
eye is mostly black, filled with a little white in the center to make it clear to viewers that this is
an eye. Moving down the face is a good sized nose that is yellow and black for viewers to see it
is a nose, along with a mouth that is mostly dark and difficult to distinguish. Near the eye and
mouth are pink colored, flower petal shapes. This is the only bright color that is on this side of
the painting, other than the yellow face, the small amount of white, and the black shadows on
the face. Also, near the eye, are small, yellow dots that seem to be coming out of the other eye.
This side of the painting is quite simple compared to the other side considering it lacks color.
This part of the piece reminds me of a girl who goes everyday without expressing who she truly
is. The face in this painting looks sad and straight faced as if something is wrong. The face is
much different from what is portrayed to left of the face. This image makes me think that this
girl has so much inside her, but is not able to express herself because she may be afraid to do so.
The yellow, small dots that are coming from her eye make me think that this is the only way she
is expressing herself, and that only a tiny bit of her personality comes out when she is near others.

The Exciting Life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
According to Alison M. Lewis who wrote Arthur Conan Doyle: A Life in Letters, he married a
woman named Louisa Hawkins in 1885. Twelve years later he fell in love with another lady
named Jean Elizabeth Leckie, but out of respect for his wife he kept their relationship friendly and
nothing more. Bittersweetly for Doyle, Loiusa died of tuberculosis in 1906. The next year he was
wed to Jean and they stayed together until her death in 1940 (Lewis 114). Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
also had five children in his lifetime. According to June Sawyers, the writer of Arthur Conan
Doyle: A Life In Letters, his first wife birthed two of his children and Jean Elizabeth Leckie had
the other three. Mary Louise was his first child, born in 1889, then Kingsley was born three years
later. His second wife had their first child in 1909, named Denis Percy Stewart, who married a
Georgian Princess later in his life. The other children were named Adrian Malcolm and Jean Lena
Annette (Sawyers 14). Through all the stresses of family and work, Doyle wanted to eliminate
Sherlock Holmesfrom his busy schedule. According to Theodore Dalrymple who wrote The
Eternal Detective, Doyle had his own medical practice set up in London, but no patients ever
came. He would write while waiting for customers. He eventually became tired of writing and
wanted to kill off Sherlock Holmes because the character was distracting him from more important
issues. In 1893 he wrote The Final Problem where Holmes plummeted

Man s Search For Meaning By Viktor E Frankl
Man s Search for Meaning by Viktor E Frankl Man as little more than a machine subject to his
environment is a popular picture painted by many psychologists of today. Viktor E Frankl sets
out to contend against that idea in his book Man s Search for Meaning. He contends that life is
not a quest for pleasure or power, but for meaning. Frankl was a prisoner in the Auschwitz and
Dachau concentration camps during the holocaust. During this time, many of his family members,
including his parents and his wife, suffered death in similar camps. Frankl himself suffered
extreme conditions of cold, starvation, malnutrition, and slavery. He was also a psychoanalyst of
sorts, and through all of his suffering, he makes incredible observations about the world that
became his. In Man s Search for Meaning, Frankl chooses primarily two areas to focus on His
experience and observations in the Nazi concentration camps, and his own philosophy of
psychology, which he calls Logotherapy. He also delves into what he calls tragic optimism , or to
put meaning into suffering, as opposed to seeking hope for deliverance from suffering. Frankl s
purpose behind writing this book can potentially be taken from what he himself said the
meaning of his own life is to help others find the meaning of theirs. (pg 165) Because he
wholeheartedly believed in the words He who has a Why to live for can bear almost any How.
(Nietzsche, pg ix) Frankl was very interested in the motivations and goals people have, and

An Existential Crisis In The Death Of Ivan Ilych By Kafka
Samson Abdurachmanov An Existential Crisis Existential crisis is a moment at which an
individual questions the very foundations of their life: whether their life has any meaning, purpose,
or value. Sometimes there are men who will accept their fate graciously. Two works that depict
these ideas are The Death of Ivan Ilych by Leo Tolstoy and The Metamorphosisby Kafka. In both
works by Tolstoy and Kafka, the main characters at some point question their lives and what life
means to them. In order to question one s life, it would be necessary that one evaluate the decisions
they make. A person s life can change in any event that has happened to them. Moreover, the...

Essay On Greek Pottery
The last time you held a piece of pottery, you probably thought about how fragile it was, and how
one misstep could leave it shattered on the floor. So why is pottery one of the most widely
surviving ancient artifacts? Shouldn t something like a gold crown or an iron sword, something
sturdy and durable, have survived after all these years?
Theoretically, yes. The problem is that, during all of those years, there was a lot of time for the
most durable materials to be stolen or melted down and recycled into other objects. Now, no matter
how hard you try, pottery cannot be recycled. After it has been created, it will only ever be
pottery. Whether it finds its way into a landfill or it s discovered in an ancient tomb, pottery does
not rot away and its colors ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

History of the Fire Service
The History of the Fire Service
Did you know that the earliest form of firefighting took place in Rome in 24 B.C? After almost
being destroyed by unruly conflagrations, Rome created a fire department consisting of about
7,000 paid firefighters. Their fire crews responded to and fought fires, and also patrolled the streets
with the authority to fine anyone who disobeyed the fire prevention codes (Hashgan). The major
piece of firefighting equipment the Roman s used was the bucket, which was passed from hand to
hand to deliver water to the fire. Additionally, they used an ax, which was utilized to remove the
fuel and prevent the spread of fire, as well as to make openings that would allow heat and smoke to
escape a burning building. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Along with the establishment of fire companies, fire insurance was also created.
In 1829, a steam fire engine was built in London, but the volunteer fire companies were stuck in
the olden days and they were slow to accept it, but in Cincinnati, Ohio, the public forced the
firefighters to use the steam engines. Additionally, William F. Channing used telegraph technology
to develop the first fire alarm box system in 1852 (Britannica). By April 29, 1852 the first box was
struck, and boxes were placed all over the city.
Later, in 1832, the New York Mutual Hook and Latter Company No. 1 bought a horse to pull
their engine. Before long, horses became a part of the fire service all over the country (Hashagan).
Many of the horses were trained to the sound of the bell to get out of their stalls and stand at the
front of the engine, usually with the help of the Dalmatian, the fire dog (Hashagan). Dalmatians
were chosen as fire dogs not only because of the strong bonds they form with the horses, but also
because they guarded the engine. At the sound of the bell, the
dog would stir up the horses and then run outside and bark at the people trying to cross in front of
the fire house (Hashagan).
In the year 1870, the aerial ladder wagon appeared. This enabled the firefighters to reach high
places, tall buildings, and made putting out fires and rescuing trapped victims easier. Then in 1871
the hose elevator was created. The hose elevator made it possible for the water

The Importance Of Pilot Missions During World War II
When we were flying in formation and had to go through clouds, we would always go straight.
A number of times, with all the bombs we would carry we would just follow the leader. This one
time I remember, I had the speed down to about 100 mph. That didn t suit me. I was on my
leader s wing, and he was climbing, but I thought he was climbing too steep. The speed kept
dropping off. When it got to ninety, I just broke away. I did not want to stall out that airplane.
Throughout that spring of 44, those Warbirds of World War II practiced strafing more and more.
A large percentage of the 353rd fighter pilot missions involved escorting B 17 bombers. Daddy
was especially comfortable on these missions because they would fly at 30,000 feet, which he

Similarities Between A Clockwork Orange And A Man For All...
Joseph Heller s Catch 22, Antony Burgess s A Clockwork Orange and Robert Bolt s A Man For
All Seasons reflect similarities and differences in characteristics of postmodernism through their
respective portrayals of themes and purpose.
The above will be proved by first giving a clarification of what postmodernism is and by looking
at prominent characteristics that may be associated with this literary era. The way in which the
novels and the play reflect similarities and differences to postmodern literature will be discussed by
referring to themes such as dystopian societies and the use of black humour, satire and irony to
emphasize the purpose of each text.

This theme is present in Catch 22, A Clockwork Orange and A Man For All Seasons. According to
Ryan (2014), a dystopia is a society that has been corrupted by basic human flaws and is a
location where people live dehumanized and fearful lives. One of the most prominent
characteristics of a dystopian society is the presence of a totalitarian dictatorship (Akman,
2013). According to Friedrich and Brzezinski (1965), a totalitarian dictatorship exists when a
government exercises absolute control over individuals and enforces a lifestyle onto people that
lulls them into obedience. Both the plots of Catch 22 and A Man For All Seasons revolve
around the biddings of a totalitarian state. In Catch 22, the state uses regulations to create a
bureaucratic dystopian control. Yossarian and other soldiers are forced to complete a number of
missions before they may return home: The colonel wants fifty missions (Heller, 1994:24). The
state keeps the soldiers at bay by increasing the number of missions every time: The colonel now
wants all of you to fly fifty five missions. (Heller, 1994:67). In A Man For All Seasons,

Germany Research Paper
Germany does not have a perfect history, and hasn t always had a perfect government, nevertheless,
Germany has had a long and colorful history. Germany has its beginnings in the year 843 A.D.
Thanks to the Treaty of Verdun, the Carolingian Empire was divided among Charlemagne s
grandsons. This led to the creation of France and Germany. Although Germany was overseen by a
monarch, tribe chieftains did most of the work to take care of and defend the country. Germany
seemed to be too difficult to handle from an outsider s point of view. As a result, the chieftains
became dukes, and, once the line of Charlemagne ran out in the year 911, one of the dukes
became the new king of Germany. At this point in German history, the rulers of various states
began to vote for their king. However, like many European countries, Germany eventually came
under the rule of the Holy Roman Empire from 962 until the mid 17th century. But, like before,
Germany proved too difficult to control, and Germany was split among 300 princes after the
Thirty Year s War. The Germanies, as it was now called, was still a part of the Holy Roman
Empire, but it was by name only. After a while, though, the German people grew tired of disunity.
Austria and Prussia (the largest powers of the Germanies) fought for control over the Germanies,
and Prussia won. Austria pulled out of the Germanies, and until World War II Germany was unified.
Germany was then divided until around 1989.

  • 2. Good And Evil In Mccarthy s The Road By Mccarthy In the book The Road by McCarthy, McCarthy dramatizes the opposition between good and evil however, over all The Road puts forth a positive and uplifting view of humanity. Even though there are multiple parts throughout the book that focus on very dark and pessimistic themes, McCarthy has a way of making the reader see darkness and pessimism a positive and uplifting theme. Scenes in The Road are very graphic and a lot of them put a very vivid image in the reader s head. Good or bad. Not only do the scenes affect the way you read the book, but they way he makes the reader work for what they want. While reading this book, there was a scene that described naked people being held hostage. Huddled against the back wall were naked people, male and female, all trying to hide, shielding their faces with their hands. On the mattress lay a man with his legs gone to the hip and the stumps of them blackened and burnt. (110). This line in particular puts a discrete image in your head of what may be going on in this scene and how the bad guys may be affecting humanity. After the little boy sees this terrible sight he asks the man We wouldn t ever eat anybody, would we? (128). The man helps him understand why the people we re being held hostage, and why they couldn t help them. Even though some of the negative and evil parts of the book don t have a positive outcome, there are many points where the negative leads to the positive, and even though there has been something bad that ... Summary Of Walking For The Scared Reading Adam Rosenblatt s book Digging for the Disappeared , in discussing the human rights of the dead has conjured my memories with people who have disappeared after I met them during my fieldwork in the Pakistani province of Balochistan in 2009 (1). Balochistan, a region divided between Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, is a black hole for the global media (2). There, one of the people that I have encountered was Qambar Chakar Baloch, an economics student at Balochistan University of Information Technology and Management Sciences. He was abducted in July, two months after I left, by the Pakistani intelligence ISI due to his student activism in campaigning against the discriminatory admission policies at his university and sympathies for... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Argentinian civil war aftermath was the beginning of forensic anthropology involvement in the politics of mass grave exhumations in 1985 by the anthropologist Clyde Snow. Digging for human skeletal remains has always been a complicated process, as there are many stakeholders who are concerned about the consequences of how to exhume and the cultural implications on how the dead are treated. When scientific methods are applied in a humanitarian context, it raises many ethical concerns and legal obligations. Human rights forensic anthropologists approach was family based to help search for missing relatives and was further developed by the International Commission on Missing Persons and other NGOs, in the Balkans and elsewhere. Their mission was never simple, as it is contested between ideals and practice, between logistical differences and varying objectives of the stakeholders. Despite the evident importance of exhumation in offering a closure for the living relatives, the uncompromising politicization of exhumation defies that goal as it is demonstrated through the factionalization of Plaza de Mayo s mothers in Argentine and the leftists and nationalists in Spain. The Plaza de Mayo s mothers case raised the question of choosing between the individualization or the collectivization of suffering in campaigning for their political rights and their moral ... After more than two years in hiding they are discovered and deported to concentration camps ... After her death Anne becomes world famous because of the diary she wrote while in hiding (annefrank.org). Anne Frankwas a young girl who had a bright future, but it was taken away from her by the Nazi s and Holocaust. Before the Holocaust, Anne Frank was just the typical young girl. It was the cause of death to nearly 11 million people, and six million consisted of Jews. The Franks took all the precautionary measures possible to keep themselves, but they could only do so much to defer the inevitability. The first major precaution was going into hiding. The Franks would hide in an apartment along with another family for two years. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum states, During the first half of July, Anne and her family went into hiding in an apartment which would eventually hide four Dutch Jews as well Hermann, Auguste, and Peter van Pels, and Fritz Pfeffer (ushmm.org). In July of 1942 the Franks went into hiding. They were unaware that they would spend two years in the secret hiding place. Biography.com writes, The families spent two years in hiding, never once stepping outside the dark, damp, sequestered portion of the building (biography.com). The amount of annoyance of not leaving the same place in two years would be immense. On August 4th, 1944 the Franks and everyone with them were discovered and arrested. Annefrank.org states, The people in hiding are caught completely off guard. They have lived with the anxiety of being discovered for more than two years and now it is happening (annefrank.org). It is unknown exactly how their presence was made known to the Nazis, but it was likely that someone betrayed them. They were deported to Westerbork transit camp, and then they ... • 5. Robert Frost Fact Sheet Frost ran through the forest at full speed. All he could see were blurs of green and brown trees. He knew his only chance at survival was to outrun the pack, but that was not an easy task. As Frost ran he recalled how he ended up here, he had been invited to a pack hunt. This was both very unusual and an honor, the reason being that Frost is an omega in his pack. The packhad successfully hunted down three large bucks. As an omega Frost was given a low ranking job, his job along with the other omega s was to take the food home. After that they would have a feast, Frost being ranked omega would eat last along with the other omegas. That is where Frost made his mistake, Frost had dishonored the Alpha therefore the whole pack. Now the huntingparty that had been assembled yesterday was hunting him, including his fellow omega friends. He knew the Alpha must had threatened their families, otherwise they would never hunt him. Frost backed up then sprang into the air, then over the river. He hoped that Rain would be able to jump the wide river. Frost brought up another burst of speed but stopped before he went anywhere. • 6. Plum Point Park Essay Issue Proposition Plum Point Park was once a place for sprouted overgrown weeds and rotting piers. Through initiative and optimism, West Ghent Civic League proposed to transition the bleak plot of land into a permanent park in the early 1990 s. 10 years and $1.5 million later, the park is now considered an open natural refuge for local residents and home for various wildlife living along the Elizabeth River. Granted Plum Point Park is an artificial park, there is still a lot of potentials that the park can amount to. Due to the lack of green spaces and aesthetically appealing areas throughout the park, the scenery can become very monotonous. • 7. Analysis Of The Oresteia In the Oresteia, there is a deep relationship between characters which is necessary to understand the role of suffering in Greek tragedy. The most profound form of this relationship is between a mortal and an immortal. Suffering of the mortal spurns a yearning on the part of the immortal to give assistance or guidance to the mortal, like a mother helps her child in pain. Suffering on the part of the mortal is a vital piece to stimulate emotional response from the audience. The same, to a lesser extent, can is also said of many other inter mortal relationships. The passions felt by the reader because of such a relationship brings an emotional cleansing in response to the suffering of the mortal. The role of suffering in Greek tragedyis to enable the audience to empathize with the characters suffering through their relationships. Relationship is defined as any two characters having any relations with each other for an end. The relationship between Orestes and Electra is that of love and use; Electra has a love for her brother, but also wants to use him to kill her mother. That use and love portrays to the audience a connection that allows them to more fully understand and relate to the relationship. This happens because of the past experiences the audience had; all men have felt both love and the want for revenge. The harnessing of emotion in Greek theater is the most powerful tool a playwright had. To be able to manipulate the audience and their emotions is the highest ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

With her 10 Teen choice awards and her Latina attitude, she sat opposite me with her blue locks and her winning smile, welcoming me to her office. Demi has recently helped host a contest for the popular companies Acuvue, which hosted a 1 Day contest. Having just heard the news that her song give your heart a break was to be appearing on Glee and that she landed a job on X Factor, made me even more excited that I was going to be in her presence for the next hour or so. My first impression of Demi was that she was quite shy, until she began laughing at the noise my chair made as I nervously sat down. Embarrassing. But I knew that I was going to like this interview. I began asking her about her experience in mentoring the contestants throughout the contest. Her answer was motherly. She expressed that she felt good helping them out, encouraging them to come out of their shell and to really push them towards their dreams. She mentioned her past and how she wished that someone did that for her, then explaining how Acuvue were really sweet to her and how they are the best contacts in the world. With this she smiled, and coffee was brought to her mahogany table. By far the shiniest wooden desk I ve possibly ever seen. • 10. The Price Of Happiness By Carl Richards The Price of Happiness Does the thought of a brand new pair of shoes fill your heart with joy? If so, would you still feel the same about those same shoes ten years from now? Most likely, the answer to the second question is no. That is the point that Carl Richards is trying to make in the article, The Odd Relationship between Money and Happiness. When searching for a topic to write about, I came across this article. I found it on the New York Times website. Richards claim is that money does not contribute to happiness, overall. This is because having money will always lead to the desire of feeling the need to have more, whether it is luxuries or money, itself. Although I agree with Richards up to a point, I cannot accept his overriding assumption that money does not support happiness. Richards article is to serve an important message: that money is not the key to true happiness. He believes that there is not a correlation between money and happiness and that you certainly cannot buy it. He explains that money may attempt to pursue happiness, but will fail. He points out that there are so many people who are happier with less than what most people have. In the 6th paragraph, Richards states, If you believe that happiness can be reduced to a functional equation up to $75,000, then how can you explain all those stories of people around the world with very little money and a whole lot of happiness (Richards 2)? What he means by this is that, if someone less ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Siren Song Analysis Siren Song This poem, clearly alluding to the Siren s of the tale of Odysseus, is a clear reference to Greek mythology. In Greek mythology, the Sirens creatures whose songs were so enticing, mariners could not resist following the music to the Sirens voices only to be killed by the ocean s ravaging tides. This poem contains no meter and is a free verse poem. Additionally, there is no set rhyme scheme. This poem is a siren speaking to the reader in a normal meter, nothing emphasized. The speaker of the poem is the siren herself talking about the situation and how she is feeling. Her voice is casual and informal and the way that she speaks is referencing the enchanting song of the sirens. The subject of the poem is a song that attracts males and reveals that they are all the same in that they are all attracted to a beautiful women and none can see beyond that. The tone of this poem gives a mysterious and mystifying feel to it. In line 1, Shall I tell you the secret alluring to the secret of how the song attracts men. Additionally, there is a satirical feel to the sirens, calling them bird suit , feathery maniacs , and squatting on an island. The main idea of this poem is to describe how women act in order to attract a man. It then shifts to the Siren s side of the story of them describing how boring it gets since all men react the same way. This poem s form is clearly adapted to its function because of the one main device that is used to make this poem stand out. The allusion, clearly a reference to the Sirens in The Odyssey is the siren s song itself .The sirens song represents a huge befuddle within readers, and has also been described as the song that nobody has ever heard of because everyone who has heard it has died. This is the most obvious and most notable allusion because according to the lure, Odysseus is tied to the mast of the ship in order to hear the Siren s Song without jumping overboard (which is what would normally happen due to the songs enchanting power). In this poem, one of the three sirens tells about the song that she sings. Atwood describes in the poem that the anatomy of the song is unknown to all mortals except the sirens themselves. • 16. Biography Of Chuck, An African American Male Chuck, an African American male, was brought to my funeral home after an autopsy had been completed on him. Chuck passed away in a car accident after his car crossed the centerline, was hit by another car and then upon impact burned. Amazingly, Chuck got out of the car but later died on the side of the road before help had arrived. Chuck s ability to get out the car and dying on the side of the road led to this being an autopsy case. While preparing Chuck for his services, I noticed that he has light discolorations on his hands and face due to his car catching on fire. This goes to show that he suffered first degree burns. First degree burns or hyperemia is any injury caused by heat, which produces redness of the skin. This type of burn does not present any unusual difficulty when embalming or preparing the body. Although it is discolored, we have to be thankful that the skin will just be red, unbroken and has no tissue destruction. For the discoloration, I used a stronger than normal arterial injection solution as a precaution against skin slip, applied massage cream during the embalming process and used cosmetics after embalming to help reduce the visibility of the burns on his hands and face. The fact that Chuck has a ruptured aorta causes some difficulties and will affect the embalming process, however embalming can still take place. A ruptured aorta will cause the embalming fluid to fill the cavity rather than going through the arterial system. If one ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Though our yard is small and sparsely decorated, its lone ornamentation a worn trampoline given to my siblings and me when we were still young enough to enjoy it seems to speak volumes about my family and our day to day life. Our house sits on the top of a hill, and the trampoline is positioned so that it seems poised to jump right to the bottom of the incline. The net is worn and ripped in several places, hanging lower on the poles with every passing storm. Where once the enclosure could be safely zipped is now just a gaping hole, an old man s toothless mouth hung open in shock at his own ability to survive. Several springs are missing and those that remain creak and groan with the slightest pressure. It s legs have been broken through the years so that, looking at it now, one of the metal rod hover slightly above the ground. Sitting on the front porch, staring over at the poor dilapidated toy, a thought crosses my mind: if this trampoline were a horse, it would be shot. Unfortunately, my office setting does not vary from those classic lyrics. The text calls the grapevine informal, yet important source of information (Robbins Judge, 2009). The interesting part of the grapevine that is particularly applicable to the situation I described is that rumors emerge as a response to situations that are important to us, when there is ambiguity, and under conditions that around anxiety, (Robbins Judge, 2009). The mid shift change of staff announcement was particularly ill timed because the project was not approved, nor were dates set for the approval; the pilot project announcement was ambiguous. This set a motion for anxiety. The common theme with my co workers was rumors around who was keeping his/her job and who was being let go, with many people speculating who was being fired. • 21. Road Is All Willa Cather once said, The end is nothing, the road is all. I think this quote means that the journey is all that matters, not the destination. I strongly agree with this opinion. It brings people closer together, creates wonderful memories, and also creates a strong bond between you and other people. Though the destination is what everyone really wants, the journey and the company are just as important as well. Once you get to the end, what happens next? It is just simply the end. People could cherish the moments that the road in the destination gives you. To me this quote means that the road is all because it brings people closer together. When I lived in California, my family and I went on a road trip to Oklahoma, Georgia, North Carolina, and Minnesota to visit family members. The travel was actually really fun. The quote relates to this situation because the journey to all four states were what brought us together and created fun. • 24. Genetic Disease Is An Autosomal Dominant Neurodegenerative... Genetic diseases are diseases that are passed on from parents to their offspring. An example of a genetic disease which can be inherited is Huntington Disease. Huntington Disease is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder with midlife onset characterised by psychiatric, cognitive and motor symptoms (G. Vonsattel and DiFiglia, 1998). The statistics for HD blah blah blah Like all genetic diseases, huntington s disease has a specific inheritance pattern. Huntington disease is an autosomal disease this means that the defective gene does not occur on one of the sex chromosomes but instead it occurs on one of the other 22 chromosomes (known as autosomes). It is a also a dominant disorder so therefore only one copy of the altered gene, passed on from a parent who has it, is necessary to cause their offspring to inherit the disease. If one of the parents has the defective gene their offspring will have a 50/50 chance of inheriting that gene. (See Figure 1). If the offspring inherits the gene it is guaranteed that they will develop Huntington s disease at some point in their life time, the disease does not skip generations. The defective gene is not present on either of the sex chromosomes resulting in the disease being independent of gender. This means that male and female offspring will have an equal risk of inheriting the disease. The faulty gene (the HD gene) that is to blame for the development of huntington s disease is located on chromosome 4 (See Figure 2), it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For example, the speaker about to begin the speech may think to themselves, I am going to bore these people. With cognitive restructuring, the speaker can instead think to themselves, I am going to make this speech interesting so the audience are not bored. These cognitive approaches are based on the speaker learning to associate different emotions to the public speaking activity. Part of these approaches involves individuals exposing themselves to public speaking situations. A more recent study has added a new means of achieving this, by allowing the speaker to take part in public speaking situations via virtual reality. The study concluded that creating a virtual audience the speaker could interact with, was as effective as using a real audience (Pertaub, Slater Barker). Using these virtual reality environments and creating a virtual good audience may become a new method of helping the anxious speaker associate good thoughts with public speaking. For more minor cases of public speaking anxiety, preparation and practice are common methods of overcoming the problem. Sophocles, Shakespeare, and Margret Atwood used symbolism add multiple layers of meaning to a text and to convey key ideas. Goodbye, Gerald, she says. She pronounces the name with mockery. It s a negation of him, an abolishment of him (Atwood 36). Almost 8am on December 7, 1941, around 360 Japanese planes attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu Hawaii. The attack lasted only two hours, but it was a huge disaster. The Japanese destroyed almost 20 American naval vessels, including eight enormous battleships, and more than 300 airplanes. The Political Strategy Of Versailles And Versailles Just as he did with his ballet performances, Louis continued to infuse theatricality into his political strategy by creating spectacles that captured his nobles attention and demonstrated their king s immense power to them. Principally, there was Versailles, which represents the most tangible example of Louis use of spectacles to establish and flaunt power. In Louis political strategy of utilizing spectacle, perception was reality, and he used France s perception of him to validate and reinforce the reality of his power. Versailles represented a concrete way to constantly remind his potential enemies some of whom were nobles that he forced to live with him in Versailles after the Fronde of his power. Versailles represented luxury and extravagance on the grandest scale. The Primi Visconti described that there is no mine in the world as valuable as Versailles. The grandeur of Versailles reflected and reinforced the grandeur of Louis, thereby building up his power, because Versailles was Louis in a sense. Just as Louis was the Sun King, Versailles was the sun palace, brimming with solar symbolism. Again, art became potent political propaganda. Furthermore, Louis used Versailles to throw magnificent parties, spectacles that served as tools to control his nobles conception of their monarch. In short, Versailles was festivity remembered. The most famous of these parties, The Pleasures of the Enchanted Isle, occurred in 1664. This festival told the story of a sorceress who enchants a troupe of knights, and the function of the festival itself followed much the same storyline. Through the extravagance of the festival, Louis much like the sorceress enchanted his court with a dizzying series of fascinating spectacles [that] demonstrated the magic of royal power. While Versailles and its accompanying festivities represented artistic means through which Louis reinforced his power, he also utilized more practical spectacles. During his reign, Louis grew the French army tremendously from only a few thousand men to over 100,00 men in peacetime and over 400,000 men in war time. From the beginning of the war times, poetry was written mostly by civilians, not by poets. Such poetry had no established identity. It was later, between 1914 and 1918 when this type of poetry acquired notion of genre, and so called soldier poets became a species. Enormous increase in writing poetryrelated to the war occurred. War poetry became very realistic, describing situation as it was perceived by participants and soldiers. Alauddin, Assistant Professor, Deptt. of Petroleum Studies, AMU, Aligarh, India Abstract This is a new optimization algorithm which mimic the behavior of mosquito to find a hole in mosquito net, if any. Both the flying and sliding motion of the mosquito have been modelled and incorporated in the algorithm. The algorithm was tested for global minima on different type of benchmark functions of various dimension and modality. Namely Gramacy Lee, Ackley, Rastrigin, Rosenbrock, Griewank and Schwefel functions of one, two, five, ten and thirty dimensions. The experiment was done with thirty different seeds generated randomly for each function and dimension. The algorithm was found to be efficient, convergent and accurate. Keywords Evolutionary algorithm, MFO, PSO, GA, ACO, Benchmark optimization function I: Introduction Optimization can be defined as the search for the best possible solution(s) to a given problem. For this, there are a number of optimization techniques both conventional and new meta heuristics. The conventional methods are gradient based which are although quite faster in convergence, but are not applicable for discontinuous, non differentiable and complex multimodal functions. These techniques have limitations to find the global optima and have general tendency to stuck at local optima as they start with a single point. By diminishing the level of poverty in countries such as Haiti, it is possible to make them less vulnerable to many of the problems they face. To reduce povertyit is important for societies to accept development strategies. What exactly is development and how can it be achieved? In the analysis of the differences between the Dependency and Modernization Theory, it is important to primarily point out the disagreement between both theories on the causes of underdevelopment. The Modernization Theory believes that underdevelopment is a product of the traditions and culture of countries. The argument made by David Brooks for the situation in Haiti is one example which portrays the views of this theory. He considers the religion and culture as constraints for Haiti to come out of its poverty. In his article he states that the voodoo religion followed by the Haitians spreads the message that life is capricious and planning futile. Theorists such as Lipset and Harrison claim development can only be achieved if people change their views from traditional to modern. A traditional view, according to them, is one in which life is integrated in the family, where much importance is given to status and where people themselves limit growth. A modern view, on the other hand, is one where the individual comes first and growth is encouraged in all ways. In contrast, the Dependency Theory blames the developed world for the underdevelopment of the poor countries. In other words, this approach believes that the economic dependency which exists between the North and South is the cause of underdevelopment. Man s Search For Meaning By Viktor E Frankl Man s Search for Meaning by Viktor E Frankl Man as little more than a machine subject to his environment is a popular picture painted by many psychologists of today. Viktor E Frankl sets out to contend against that idea in his book Man s Search for Meaning. He contends that life is not a quest for pleasure or power, but for meaning. Frankl was a prisoner in the Auschwitz and Dachau concentration camps during the holocaust. During this time, many of his family members, including his parents and his wife, suffered death in similar camps. Frankl himself suffered extreme conditions of cold, starvation, malnutrition, and slavery. He was also a psychoanalyst of sorts, and through all of his suffering, he makes incredible observations about the world that became his. In Man s Search for Meaning, Frankl chooses primarily two areas to focus on His experience and observations in the Nazi concentration camps, and his own philosophy of psychology, which he calls Logotherapy. He also delves into what he calls tragic optimism , or to put meaning into suffering, as opposed to seeking hope for deliverance from suffering. Frankl s purpose behind writing this book can potentially be taken from what he himself said the meaning of his own life is to help others find the meaning of theirs. After almost being destroyed by unruly conflagrations, Rome created a fire department consisting of about 7,000 paid firefighters. Their fire crews responded to and fought fires, and also patrolled the streets with the authority to fine anyone who disobeyed the fire prevention codes (Hashgan). The major piece of firefighting equipment the Roman s used was the bucket, which was passed from hand to hand to deliver water to the fire. Additionally, William F. Channing used telegraph technology to develop the first fire alarm box system in 1852 (Britannica). By April 29, 1852 the first box was struck, and boxes were placed all over the city. Later, in 1832, the New York Mutual Hook and Latter Company No. 1 bought a horse to pull their engine. Many of the horses were trained to the sound of the bell to get out of their stalls and stand at the front of the engine, usually with the help of the Dalmatian, the fire dog (Hashagan). Dalmatians were chosen as fire dogs not only because of the strong bonds they form with the horses, but also because they guarded the engine. At the sound of the bell, the dog would stir up the horses and then run outside and bark at the people trying to cross in front of the fire house (Hashagan). Germany has its beginnings in the year 843 A.D. Thanks to the Treaty of Verdun, the Carolingian Empire was divided among Charlemagne s grandsons. This led to the creation of France and Germany. Although Germany was overseen by a monarch, tribe chieftains did most of the work to take care of and defend the country. Germany seemed to be too difficult to handle from an outsider s point of view. As a result, the chieftains became dukes, and, once the line of Charlemagne ran out in the year 911, one of the dukes became the new king of Germany. At this point in German history, the rulers of various states began to vote for their king. However, like many European countries, Germany eventually came under the rule of the Holy Roman Empire from 962 until the mid 17th century. But, like before, Germany proved too difficult to control, and Germany was split among 300 princes after the Thirty Year s War. The Germanies, as it was now called, was still a part of the Holy Roman Empire, but it was by name only. After a while, though, the German people grew tired of disunity.
