The two sources provide valuable perspectives into the legal system within the
anglo saxon period. The Anglo Saxon legal system was based around the King who
was the secular and spiritual leader of the country.The King first had to centralise
his power and become the most influential person to then delegate to others in his
kingdom; resulting in the creation of the earls, who ruled over their individual
earldoms and carried out the King s orders given to them through writs, enforcing
justice and order. There were around 40 shires (counties) in Anglo Saxon England,
and a sheriff would be the one to convey the King s will and settle disputes in shire

implemented and integrated to the previous system, therefore hindering the

Theme Of Revenge In The Cask Of Amontillado
When we think of someone who is insane, we think of someone who is unstable in
their disordered state of mind. We wouldn t think of someone who is clever;
however, in Edgar Allen Poe s work of literature The Cask of Amontillado,
perceptions are changed. The protagonist known as Montresor is cruel, twisted, and
ruthless. Through Poe s gothic style of writing, we see vengeance prevail through the
psychopathic character Montresor. Despite Montresor s psychopathic actions, his
strategic ability to lure Fortunato to his death with reverse psychology makes him
more clever than psychologically distorted. In The Cask of Amontillado, we see
Montresor s deviousness from the start when Montresor says, The thousand injuries
of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed
revenge...I must not only punish but punish with impunity (Poe 250). From this, it is
evident that Montresor is one who is seeking revenge, and already has a plan to
murder Fortunato without any punishment or getting caught. As discussed in The

Does anyone in their right mind think that modern tennis has changed too much?
Do people believe Rafael Nadal is serving at too high a ball speed or that tennis
superstar Serena Williams needs to go back to the wooden racket? Those questions
are unreasonable in the context of tennis, yet for golf that mindset resides within the
governing body. The counter argument of fair play does not have merit in this
debate because everyone can have access to the newest club or ball technology in
