The Paradox Of Emotions In Noel Carroll s The Philosophy...
The genre of horror films have been spooking audiences since the early 1900s with films such as The
Abominable Snowman and Nosferatu. Although fans of these movies are scared, they continue to
watch to the movies every decade despite their fears. This drive to see movies that induce fear but an
overall avoidance to fear is known as a paradox of horror films. In 1990, Noel Carroll outlined the
paradox of horror in his book entitled The Philosophy of Horror. Carroll discussed in his book at least
three theories that could solve the paradox of horror but each are flawed. The two theories that are
connected the most with experience and the knowledge of what a horror movie experience is the
illusion theory and the thought theory of emotions but Carroll leaves out Edmund Burke s sublime in
his discussion of the paradox of horror. This concept of Burke s sublime can be used without flaw to
dissolve the paradox of horror films unlike the illusion theory or the thought theory of emotions. The
paradox of horror movies is that people are afraid of horror movies despite knowing that the movies
are fiction. Carroll attempts to use the illusion theory and the thought theory of emotions to explain
the paradox but neglects to mention the concept of the sublime which can be used to explain ... Show

He believed that terror could influence the sublime and that the sublime itself was whatever is fitted in
any sort to excite the ideas of pain and danger... Whatever is in any sort terrible, or is conversant about
terrible objects, or operates in a manner analogous to terror (Burke 211). This particular theory can be
applied, to the paradox of horror films because it states whatever causes us fear or pain also produces
feelings of pleasure. Looking at the concept of the sublime, it can be broken into these premises and

The Notebook
The Notebook, based off of the novel, is one of the best love story films around directed by Nick
Cassavetes. An old man reading out loud from some old notebook that tells the story of Allie and
Noah. Reading to a women with alzheimer s condition telling about how the two were separated by
world war II and then reunited. Allie and Noah grew up in two different and opposite life styles. Noah
saw the women of his dreams, right there in front of him. Trying to get her attention was harder than
he thought. Once they were together, they were inseparable. Noah never forgot about Allie as time
went on. He wrote her letters everyday for a whole year. Not getting any responses back, Allie decides
to go see how he s doing at an abandoned house he refinished for Allie. While there things got a little
personal and back to how they used to be between them. Allie happens to be engaged at this time but
doesn t know who she loves more. Deciding who she loves more takes a trip and listening to her heart.

Those two together were very credible. In most scenes they were the only two characters. When they
auditioned for the roles they really liked each other. As time went on thought, they did not like to work
together. It is hard to tell that in the film by the way they kept acting like the did in the beginning.
They had to overcome that and finish the movie. My favorite character is Noah. Noah never gave up
on Allie, and that is true love. Nothing can beat true love. He waited for her for many years. Gosling
was a great actor in the part of Noah. I could relate to Allie the most because we are both very
forgiving. As her and Noah were out in the canoe, she forgave him quickly. We may not know who is
meant to be in our lives buy we soon figure it

The Distributive Property of Algebraic Expressions
The Distributive property of Algebraic expressions

Completing algebra problems can be difficult if you don t understand the properties of real numbers.
There are several properties in algebra dealing with both integers and real numbers; one that will be
the focus of this report will be the distributive property. We use this property when we are combining
addition and multiplication in an algebraic expression. Let s say that you are presented with the
expression 6x(2 + y) = 9x + 5xy, now with this problem the order of operation would have you to add
the terms in parenthesis first, by using the distributive property it allows to simplify the problem by
multiplying all ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

each one by using the same concept.
In conclusion we have learn about some of the basic pre algebra properties of real numbers. We have
discussed the how important of knowing what each property allows you to do. Not knowing about the
properties of real numbers would be like, just looking at a bunch of numbers and letters. So
understanding them helps you to know and understand how algebra works. Reading and applying
these properties have helped me to understand algebra a little bit better. We only talked about three of
the properties, which are commutative, associative and distributive properties. These properties are
some of the basics in pre algebra that I liked and that helped me to be able to simplify expression in
algebra. When it s all said and done it really all boils down to one thing completing algebra problems

The Use Of Igbo Culture In Chinua Achebe s Things Fall Apart
In 1958, Chinua Achebe wrote his first novel, Things Fall Apart. It centers around Okonkwo, a
powerful clan leader man that lives in the village of Igbo people, Umuofia. The story follows him and
the rest of his village as they are colonized by white Christians. Achebe wrote the novel to teach
people about the Igbo culture and break stereotypes made about indigenous Africans. Chinua Achebe
used literary devices such as similes, proverbs, and folktales to help illustrate Igbo culture.
The similes used in Things Fall Apart can give the reader insights into the Igbo culture. Achebe s
similes tend to be nature related. For example, in chapter one, Okonkwo is described as as slippery as
water. This simile is used to describe Okonkwo s skill ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Proverbs are short sayings giving advice or stating facts One proverb, used to teach children about
responsibility, is, As elders said, if a child washed his hands, he could eat with kings. (p7) This is
especially relevant to Okonkwo. His father was very irresponsible and lazy, and was always poor; he
never got to eat with kings. Okonkwo wanted to be the opposite of his father, so he did everything he
could to get a high status. These proverbs are used to communicate important traits and values that are
important to the Igbo people.
As well as similes and proverbs, folktales, stories that are passed down by word of mouth through
generations. are used to show the Igbo culture to readers. OneA folktale Achebe used is about a
quarrel between the Earth and Sun. In this, the Sun withheld rain for years, and the Earth dried up. No
crops could grow and many were dying, so a vulture begs the Sky for rain. The sky pities the vulture
and brings lots of rain. It was used to show men that need to be humble and ask for help.
In Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe works to show the readers what the Igbo culture is like to
sharpen the contrast between them and the colonists. To do this, he uses similes, proverbs, and
folktales. These are bases around nature, hunting, and other important aspects of Igbo culture. They
also show the values of the Igbo

Pontius Pilate As A Negative Figure In The Bible
Pontius Pilate as a Negative Figure in the Bible
The Bible has been a well known text that many people have based their religion off of and use to
guide them through their life. The interpretation may be different depending on who wrote the chapter,
when the story was written, and depending on the person who is reading the story. All of these factors
contribute to how we read the Bible. Contingent on the context of the situation, Pilate may be
portrayed as a negative, neutral, or positive figure in the Bible. Warren Carter s book, Pontius Pilate:
Portraits of a Roman Governor, states, But in addition to exonerating him from any blame, this verdict
claims that during Jesus trial Pilate recognizes Jesus special identity and so becomes a ... Show more

The Bible states, For he realized that it was out of jealousy that they had handed him over (Matt
27:18). Pilate knew that the leaders of Jerusalem wanted Jesus murdered because it was out of
jealousy. If Pilate knew that he was innocent from the start, why did he allow the crowd to overtake
his power and condemn him for being the Son of God? Jesus was seen as a threat to the leaders of
Jerusalem, so the leaders wanted him killed. Pilate ultimately had the power to determine who was to
be punished, his hand was not forced to condemn Jesus. Yet, he still allowed Jesus to be crucified in
Pilate s reign as governor.
Like many people, Pilate fell to peer pressure. Pilate was aware of the fact that Jesus was innocent but
still allowed him to be punished. He asked the crowd why they wanted Jesus to be crucified in hopes
that they possibly would change their mind. The Bible states, Then he asked, Why, what evil has he
done? But they shouted all the more, Let him be crucified (Matt 27:23). Pilate knew he was in the
wrong because Jesus was innocent, yet he still allows him to be crucified. Pilate should have put his
foot down because he was aware that Jesus did not commit a crime. The Bible also says, While he was
sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent a word to him, Have nothing to do with that innocent man,
for today I have suffered a great deal because of a dream about him (Matt. 27:19). His wife
specifically told him not to harm Jesus. She had a

Intercultural Competency Paper
Developing cultural competency is not always easy and it is not something that one acquires through
birth. Instead, it is a developmental process that is nurtured over time. While the growth process may
start off with a memorized list of acceptable and unacceptable behaviors that one is supposed to
follow, true intercultural competence evolves when behaviors are internalized and occur naturally
because they feel right (Medina López Portillo, 2004, p. 315). Stress, anxiety, and difficulties are
sometimes signs that an individual is making progress towards cross cultural deepening (Stephenson,
2002, p. 99). At an extreme, when individuals are overwhelmingly stressed in a new cultural
environment, their failure to adapt is expressed at times by emotional and physical health issues (Li et
al., 2013).
The measurement of an individual s intercultural competence is a complex challenge. The literature
references numerous assessment tools that have emerged over time but it would be difficult to identify
any one particular tool as the best and there seems to be little agreement on what dimensions of
intercultural learning should be tested (Deardorff, 2011; El Ganzoury, 2012; Godwin Jones, 2013).

the degree to which an individual has the ability to navigate cultural differences (Medina López

The Importance Of Advances In Healthcare Science
Healthcare science advances are important in everyday life to keep human beings healthy and alive.
Over the last 20 years, there has been a substantial increase in these advances to reduce the chances of

immunodeficient virus (HIV), Diabetes and cancer treatment vaccines. Throughout the next decade,
one of the significant advance in healthcare science would be the utilization of stem cells.

Diabetes is an ailment in which the body s ability cannot respond and deliver to insulin causing
uncommon processing of sugars and increasing levels of glucose in the blood. There are 2 types of
diabetes but there is no cure for any. Type 1 diabetes where patients can t produce enough insulin and
type 2 where they can produce it but they can t utilize it well.
There have been various prevention and treatment programmes to improve on both type 1 and type 2
diabetes which includes lifestyle measures and different kinds of medication. Over the years,
techniques have enhanced throughout because of medical technology and have been produced much
better gadgets which are made to be less painful for the patients and produce immediate and numerous
insulin instantly. Even though there has been more advancement for type 2 diabetes than for type 1
there are works going on for the immunomodulation of t cell therapy and the reformation of beta cells.
The diagnosis for diabetes can be done by doing a blood or urine glucose test.
Over the year s different drugs were being made to improve sensitivity of insulin in muscle cells but
some got removed from the market due to different kind of side effect such as liver toxicity. Later,

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a serious chronic medical
condition of the endocrine system that affects women, which can cause infertility in women of
reproductive age. Women with PCOS have abnormal cysts in at least one of their ovaries which cause
the eggs not to fully mature and be released during ovulation. The female reproductive organs are the
uterus, ovary, and fallopian tubes. The ovary is located laterally left to uterus and inferior to the
fallopian tubes. An ovary contains about two million follicles oocyte at birth. Majority will die off and

These are the common symptoms associated with PCOS. Women with PCOS have irregular
menstruation or amenorrhea and tend to develop hirsutism known as an increase in unwanted hairs,
especially on the face, legs, stomach, chest, and back. Some of the additional symptoms are high
cholesterol, high blood pressure, Pelvic pain, acne, skin tags, weight gain, oily or dry skin, patches of
skin on arms, breast and neck and anxiety (Thornton et al, 2015).
.
Complication
PCOS can cause inability to conceive and miscarriages in women. Sleep apneas can lead to heart
attack to occur. There is a high risk of developing endometrial cancer in women with PCOS because
the innermost layer is not shedding; overtime the cells from endometrium develop into uterine cancer.
It can spread to other regions of the body. Another complication of PCOS is liver disease can occur
due to the inability of the liver to metabolize the excess glucose secreting in the body which can lead
to insulin resistance, eventually the development of type 2 diabetes in PCOS patients (Caserta,
Adducchio, Picchia, Ralli, Matteucci, Moscarini, 2014).

The Attack on Pearl Harbor Essay
December 7, 1941, was one of the worst attacks on the United States in U.S. history. Of that day 2,403
soldiers were killed in action, 1,178 were wounded in action. Numerous U.S. armed forces personnel
were misjudged, which allowed the Japanese to carry out this terrible attack. Not only did the
Japanese hit the U.S. where they knew it would hurt the most, but it crippled the United States entire

Not only did the United States freeze all Japanese assets under U.S. control but it halted all sales of oil
to Japan as well. The United States tried to resolve the issues with Japan over these differences, but a
resolution could not be reached and war was inevitable (Borg). Why didn t the U.S. suspect Pearl
Harbor of being the place of attack? Since the United States halted all exports to Japan, Japan declared
war on the United States. Due to the lack of information, lack of technology, and talks of peace by
Japan, the United States had no idea where Japan was going to hit. In January 1941, reports were
received that Japan might attack Pearl Harbor but military officials ignored these reports. They
considered attacks on the Philippines and other European countries to be more likely, underestimating
Japan s ability to conceal preparations for such an operation. Due to the success of the cryptanalysis
machine called, Magic, American leaders started breaking Japanese military operational codes. The
codes that were deciphered showed Japan was likely to take some type of military action (Irive). At
that time, Japan had only a 12 month supply of petroleum to fuel its economy and war operations left.

when and where (Woods). Pearl Harbor had been a major naval base since before 1898. In early

Analysis Of The Poem A Little Tooth By Thomas Lux
Enjambment in Thomas Lux s Poem, A Little Tooth. Enjambment refers to the continuation of a clause
or a sentence without a pause beyond the end of a line, stanza, or couplet. The purpose of enjambment
in poetry is to enable an idea to progress beyond the limitations of a single line, mostly to emphasize a
particular idea within the lines themselves. Also, poets adopt this style to surprise a reader, by
introducing an idea in the first line, and changing it in the next. This allows a poet to draw the reader
from one line to the next and create a fast pace or rhythm for a poem. In the poem, A Little Tooth , the
poet typically wanted to demonstrates the flow of an idea beyond the limitation of a single line. The

child who is alone and miserable to highlight the plight immigrants. The imagery is meant for the
readers to show some sympathy towards immigrants. As a reader, this descriptive phrase elicits
sympathy because the kid is depicted as miserable and unwanted. Another form of image in the poem
is when the narrator says, ... you move from one country to another where nobody / wants you,

A PAnd Araby By James Joyce
A P by John Updike and Araby by James Joyce are two short stories that have multiple differences and
similarities. A P is about a teenager and his lust for young ladies and Araby is about a young boy who
had a crush on a older girl. I will be comparing and contrasting the portrayal of women, love and
epiphany in the two short stories A P and Araby. I believe women are portrayed negatively in A P. I
have came to this conclusion because I believe Sammy treats the Queenie positively but treats the
other two females negatively. For example Sammy describe the other girls using the following

girls not being there to praise and love him for being so brave to quit his job for them and the fact that
he made such a major decision for people who he did not even know is stupid. Now he does not have
a job nor the young ladies.
I believe women are portrayed positively in Araby. I have come to this conclusion because of how
much the little boy values this girl and his efforts to impress her. For example, each morning before
school, he he camps by the window to see when she heads out to go to school. he leaves out when she
does and follows her to the school. They part ways once she reaches her school but he ensures that she
sees him, hoping that she would notice him. His crush confronted him for the first time to ask him if

Superstitions In The Crucible
Crucible Superstitions Arthur Miller based his novel, The Crucible, on a true set of events that
occurred in Salem, Massachusetts, in the year 1692. Salem had become a town where neighbors and
enemies would blame each other of witchcraft, without actual evidence to support their accusations.
Most of the accusations led to the victim being guilty. If the Puritans thought you were guilty, you had
to either confess or be hanged. The Puritans believed that if you confessed, God would forgive you,
which suggests the way of life for the Puritans. The Puritans were big believers of God and the bible.
They believed that no one should commit sins, but if you confessed God would forgive you. The great
belief in the bible insinuated the start of witchcraft and superstitions, because the bible expresses how
one should not live with a witch. The Puritans also had no way to explain the unnatural things that
occurred around them, since they weren t as smart, that s why they turned to blaming witches and ...

point from How to Read Literature Like a Professor in this chapter of Harry Potter is never stand next

Tacit Agenda Of A Literary Approach To The Bible
Bible can be approached not only historically or generically but also literarily and this article, The
Tacit Agenda of a Literary Approach to the Bible, focuses on Leithwort which is repeated word that
helps to see Bible literarily. Buber and Rosenzweig think that Bible is more than just a Biblical text,
but it is more beautiful and well crafted literature and they also view the bible philosophically and
looked for deeper meaning. Rosenzwig claims that author s meaning could be interpreted differently
to the readers as one word has multiple meanings. Also, there is word called Leithwort. Leithwort is
the one of the way that Bible uses as a literature method of expressing the idea. Leithwort means
repeating same rooted word and by saying same rooted word over and over again it holds a powerful
meaning. Therefore, Burber says that it is important to understand and interpret properly Leithwort for
readers so that they could ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Leithwort is very powerful tool that author could show authorial intent to the readers but how the text
posses Leithwort is not clearly stated. Author uses Midrash, Jewish traditional reference, to find out
the meaning in the Leithwort and hidden meaning. Midrash is the fundamental raw material that
author uses to translate Bible and support their opinion. This article focuses on the Leithwort and says
how important Leithwort is. As mentioned above, Leithwort is repeating same rooted word over again
in the text and emphasize its importance of the repeated words and also convey author s intent to the
readers by using this method. However, in some culture, such as Korea, Leithwort would not be the
way of showing author s importance meaning or emphasizing what author wants to express to the
readers. Even it is obviously repeating same words, it does not give special meaning in some cultures.
Since the word is repeated people may think logically it could be

African Americans And African American Community
As seen through time, African Americans have been at a disadvantage when it comes to accessing
funds that are available to most people. This however has not stopped them from creating and
accessing help that supports and aids their families. Through communal efforts, African Americans
have been able to create mutual aid for themselves. In these communities, there are many sectors that
have been built, but the main reason many are making it or able to afford and do what they are
currently doing is through the help of the various communities and organizations that came about.
Throughout each decade there have been forms of aid created solely for African Americans. Before
slavery, when African Americans were still in Africa, the communities were thriving economically and
socially. Africa produced a plethora of advanced civilizations. Although Europeans like to credit
themselves for the spread of Christianity, Christianity was in Ethiopia long before the Europeans
came. As one can see through time, church is an important communal and distinctive quality of the
African American community. In his book, West African Religion: A Study of the Beliefs and
Practices of Akan, Ewe, Yoruba, Ibo, and Kindred Peoples, Geoffrey Parrinder explains, Africa had a
history, long before the Europeans came to our shores... Religion is a fundamental, perhaps the most
important, influence in the life of most Africans (Parrinder 1). African Americans already had the
support system of a church

Robert Burns Research Paper
Robert Burns On the 25th of January in 1759, Robert Burns was the first born of William Burnes and
Agnes Broun in Alloway, Scotland. The eldest of seven children, Robert grew up to be the poet that is
well known today for his many famous poems, including A Red, Red Rose. Burns work was
influenced by occurrences in his life, with his poems often discussing love, aspects of farm life,
regional experience, traditional culture, class culture and distinctions, and religious practice (The
Poetry Foundation). Although Robert Burns was a poet of the 18th century, his work continues to stir
up a wide range of emotions for the many people who read his poems. Burns parents were tenant
farmers, with a tenant farmer being defined as a person who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Since the Romantic Movement began only a few years after Burns death, you can argue that he
inspired romantic poets. However he was not considered a Romanticist because he did not write the
bulk of his poems in the main time period in which the movement was occurring, the 1800s to about
1850. Rather than being influenced by a movement, which often sets the tone for the topic or style of a
written work, Burns was influenced by his life and his personal experiences. At age 15, Robert Burns
wrote his first song, Once I Loved a Bonnie Lass, also called, Handsome Nell. This poem was inspired
by a girl named Nelly Kilpatrick. Burns clearly shows that he was influenced by others in his poems
specifically in this poem. Burns noted in a letter, The subject of it was a young girl who really
deserved all the praises I have bestowed on her. I not only had this opinion of Her then but I actually
think so still, now that the spell is long since broken, and the enchantment at an end. (The Songs of
Robert Burns, 48). With Burns stating this, he clearly describes what this song was about and how the
love he had for this girl moved him to write this song. This is only one example of many inspirations
for his poetry. Another example is that his poem, A Red, Red Rose, could be about his wife, Jean
Armour, or his many love affairs, depending on how you interpret the poem using careful

Franklin and Theodore Roosevelt Essay
Franklin and Theodore Roosevelt
Throughout the ages there have been many great leaders. These leaders are powerful in many ways,
with a strong control over the people, and a place in history. But who would have guessed that two
cousins would be some of the greatest government figures ever? Franklin Delano Roosevelt and
Theodore Roosevelt, both American presidents, both American Heroes. Without these dignitaries, the
American advancement into the present day would be incomplete and/or impossible. They gave
people hope through hard times and the spirit to protect their country and one another.

Roosevelt took advantage of his presidential powers to bust into foreign affairs in Latin America and
resolved the Russo Japanese war. This valiant act earned him a Nobel Peace Prize.
Roosevelt felt strongly about trade throughout the world. In 1904 the Isthmus of Panama was first
broken by American shovel. After months of negotiation, the Latin American government allowed the
creation of the Panama Canal. The U.S. military and other volunteers did most of the work. But
because of Yellow Fever and Malaria , few workers returned. In 1914 the Canal Zone was finished and
for the first time the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans were flowing together.
As Roosevelt s second term was coming to an end, he picked William Howard Taft as his successor.
Taft preached his ideas to the public, criticizing Roosevelt in his speeches.
Roosevelt, hearing about his partner s insulting speeches, broke from the Republican s and formed a
third party which he called the Progressive Party. The two duked it out in The most remarkable

Extended Response Kusado Sengen
The discovery of Kusado Sengen in 1928, a long forgotten medieval Japanese town that once used to
be suited near Seto Inland Sea and the mouth of Ashida River, was significant to the historian s
understanding medieval Japan because it changed historians beliefs on medieval Japan through the
many artifacts and remains it has left. These include pottery, coinage and a collection of wooden
objects.
In 1928, a large amount of pottery, coins, imported goods, tools and other artifacts were discovered

from the excavations are now exhibited and protected in the Hiroshima Prefectural Museum of

and the lifestyle deducted from it.
Historians and Archaeologists discovered many pottery that can be traced back to distant villages in
Japan and even China which tells historians that Kusado Sengen was probably connected to wide
regions of Asia through Seto Inland Sea. Source C (pottery) is a Tokoname Ware jar that was one of
many types of earthenware which was the most common type of pottery. This showed that Japan had
clay, knew how to turn it into ceramics. Archaeologist were also able to find some everyday wooden
objects such as bowls with fancy art on them which was able to give historians an understanding of
medieval Japaneses art. Source B (wooden objects) depicts an artist impression of a lacquerware bowl
which is a wooden bowl with a layer of lacquer which gives it a shiny look. This proved that Japan

Renewable Sources Of Energy And Energy
The world today is a place of rapid progress and scientific advancement, which has been going strong
for the last few decades. This period will gradually begin to slow down and eventually stop altogether
because the world will, quite literally, run out of fuel. Right now, the majority of all the energy used in
the day to day lives and operations of the entire world population are nonrenewable. This energy is
created from the fossil fuels: coal, petroleum and natural gas. Fossil fuels are still cheap and high in
supply, but the rate at which we are consuming them, which is only expected to increase, vastly
exceeds the rate at which they regenerate. This creates the aforementioned problem of mankind
running out of the required natural resources to fuel its own energy demands. The only solution to this
problem that is possible, is to begin placing more influence renewable sources of energy and doing so
as soon as possible. Renewable energy sources include solar, wind, hydroelectric and geothermal
power. Each of these are insignificant alone, but as a group they become a viable alternative to
nonrenewable energy sources. Together, they have the potential to replace the fossil fuels as our
primary provider of energy. Although there are many that argue against the use of renewable energy it
is vital that the United States government makes the implementation and widespread use of renewable
energy sources mandatory.
Experts have known and understood that nonrenewable energy sources

The Concepts Of Human Psychology
With each choice you take, each judgment you make, there is a conflict in your psyche; a fight
amongst instinct and rationale. Moreover, the instinctive piece of your brain is significantly more
intense than you may might suspect. The vast majority of us get a kick out of the chance to believe
that we are equipped for settling on sound choices. We may on occasion depend on our gut nature,
however in the event that essential we can approach our forces of motivation to touch base at a
consistent choice. Usually, we surmise that we have purposes behind what we trust, that is frequently a
misstep.
Prof Daniel Kahneman, from Princeton University, began an inquiry in our comprehension of the
human personality. It s a deep quest and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This quick state of mind is staggeringly effective, yet completely covered up. It is so intense, it is
really in charge of the vast majority of the things that you say, do, think and accept. We are
constrained, we are not immaculate, we are nonsensical in a wide range of ways but then you have no
clue this is going on. This framework is your concealed auto pilot, and it has its very own brain. It is
sometimes known as the outsider inside. More often than not, our quick, instinctive personality is in
charge, proficiently assuming responsibility of the considerable number of thousands of choices we
make every day. The issue comes when we permit our quick, instinctive framework to settle on
choices that we should disregard to our moderate, consistent framework. This is the place the
oversights sneak in.
Our reasoning is loaded with efficient errors referred to clinicians as intellectual predispositions and
they influence all that we do. They make us spend incautiously, be excessively impacted by what other
individuals think. They influence our convictions, our sentiments, and our choices, and we have no
clue it is going on. It might appear to be difficult to accept, yet that is on the grounds that your
intelligent, moderate personality is an ace at imagining a main story. The majority of the convictions
or suppositions you have originated from a programmed reaction. In any case, at that point your

Known as one of the greatest and most famous films of all time, Jaws was recognized as a summer
blockbuster after its release in June 1975. Jaws, directed by Steven Spielberg, was highly known for
its outstanding cinematography, scenic music, as well as the effect it had on filmmaking history with
the tremendously small budget they had of 9 million dollars. This film created a summer blockbuster
by being the start of great suspense, action, and strong effects and explosions. Movies these days have
extreme CGI effects where many viewers may not be amazed nor shocked about, but Jaws, being the
first film with solid effects, has impacted a vast audience. Jaws and the notion of the blockbuster have

Jaws invented that form of pleasurable entertainment exactly 40 years ago this week, opening on June

imagination, from fish into monsters (Marche). It is truly amazing how Spielberg was able to
accomplish such a task in being able to change billions of peoples view on one aspect. One film
created how a shark can be viewed as a surviving animal living in the ocean on one day and a vicious,
man eating killer the next. The suspense that is used throughout the film had an impact on many
movies today; directors today use the cuts and ideas that resemble attacks under water or scenes out in
the ocean. The huge explosions and surprising shark attacks have given directors a new view on
filming and cinematography. The effect this film had not only influenced the audience but also

Effects Of Scurvy During The Middle Ages And The Age Of Sail
Imagine having swollen gums, tooth loss, fatigue, bruising, and exposure to new disease, only to die a
few weeks after. With education, medicinal practices and accessibility to resources, the risk of scurvy
proves less viable in our modern society. However, scurvy dominated the outbreaks and contributed to
the onset of other pathogens during the Middle Ages and the Age of Sail. With over two million died
during voyages, the disease impacted the ability to explore the world, the economy and ended up
wiping out new colonies established from the Old World (Harthorne, 1). Caused by a lack of
education, mundane conditions and diet, Scurvy became an epidemic between 1500 and 1800. Thus,
scurvy ended up impacting the Columbian exchange and the role of history. Scurvy occurs as a result
of a lack of Vitamin C for prolonged periods of time. Humans regularly use Vitamin C to perform vital
function in the body. In the Age of Exploration, sailors went without any Vitamin C for upwards of a
month due to a lack of education, inhumane conditions, and the spoilage time for fruits and
vegetables. To get enough sailors to voyage across the world, captains and current workers would
capture people to join their crew, never to see their families again. The captured faced deplorable
conditions, including working vigorously for hours on end, limited sleep, rats crawling around and
fecal matter around them. Stress levels increase due to the barbaric conditions they faced. Studies
show that workers

  • 2. The Paradox Of Emotions In Noel Carroll s The Philosophy... The genre of horror films have been spooking audiences since the early 1900s with films such as The Abominable Snowman and Nosferatu. Although fans of these movies are scared, they continue to watch to the movies every decade despite their fears. This drive to see movies that induce fear but an overall avoidance to fear is known as a paradox of horror films. In 1990, Noel Carroll outlined the paradox of horror in his book entitled The Philosophy of Horror. Carroll discussed in his book at least three theories that could solve the paradox of horror but each are flawed. The two theories that are connected the most with experience and the knowledge of what a horror movie experience is the illusion theory and the thought theory of emotions but Carroll leaves out Edmund Burke s sublime in his discussion of the paradox of horror. This concept of Burke s sublime can be used without flaw to dissolve the paradox of horror films unlike the illusion theory or the thought theory of emotions. The paradox of horror movies is that people are afraid of horror movies despite knowing that the movies are fiction. Carroll attempts to use the illusion theory and the thought theory of emotions to explain the paradox but neglects to mention the concept of the sublime which can be used to explain ... Whatever is in any sort terrible, or is conversant about terrible objects, or operates in a manner analogous to terror (Burke 211). This particular theory can be applied, to the paradox of horror films because it states whatever causes us fear or pain also produces feelings of pleasure. An old man reading out loud from some old notebook that tells the story of Allie and Noah. Reading to a women with alzheimer s condition telling about how the two were separated by world war II and then reunited. Allie and Noah grew up in two different and opposite life styles. Noah saw the women of his dreams, right there in front of him. Trying to get her attention was harder than he thought. Once they were together, they were inseparable. Noah never forgot about Allie as time went on. He wrote her letters everyday for a whole year. Not getting any responses back, Allie decides to go see how he s doing at an abandoned house he refinished for Allie. While there things got a little personal and back to how they used to be between them. Allie happens to be engaged at this time but doesn t know who she loves more. In most scenes they were the only two characters. When they auditioned for the roles they really liked each other. As time went on thought, they did not like to work together. It is hard to tell that in the film by the way they kept acting like the did in the beginning. They had to overcome that and finish the movie. My favorite character is Noah. Noah never gave up on Allie, and that is true love. Nothing can beat true love. He waited for her for many years. Gosling was a great actor in the part of Noah. I could relate to Allie the most because we are both very forgiving. As her and Noah were out in the canoe, she forgave him quickly. • 4. The Distributive Property of Algebraic Expressions The Distributive property of Algebraic expressions Janet Mency MAT 221 Instructor: Amy Glidewell January 25, 2014 Completing algebra problems can be difficult if you don t understand the properties of real numbers. There are several properties in algebra dealing with both integers and real numbers; one that will be the focus of this report will be the distributive property. We use this property when we are combining addition and multiplication in an algebraic expression. Let s say that you are presented with the expression 6x(2 + y) = 9x + 5xy, now with this problem the order of operation would have you to add the terms in parenthesis first, by using the distributive property it allows to simplify the problem by multiplying all ... In conclusion we have learn about some of the basic pre algebra properties of real numbers. We have discussed the how important of knowing what each property allows you to do. Not knowing about the properties of real numbers would be like, just looking at a bunch of numbers and letters. So understanding them helps you to know and understand how algebra works. Reading and applying these properties have helped me to understand algebra a little bit better. We only talked about three of the properties, which are commutative, associative and distributive properties. These properties are some of the basics in pre algebra that I liked and that helped me to be able to simplify expression in algebra. • 5. The Use Of Igbo Culture In Chinua Achebe s Things Fall Apart In 1958, Chinua Achebe wrote his first novel, Things Fall Apart. It centers around Okonkwo, a powerful clan leader man that lives in the village of Igbo people, Umuofia. The story follows him and the rest of his village as they are colonized by white Christians. Achebe wrote the novel to teach people about the Igbo culture and break stereotypes made about indigenous Africans. Chinua Achebe used literary devices such as similes, proverbs, and folktales to help illustrate Igbo culture. The similes used in Things Fall Apart can give the reader insights into the Igbo culture. Achebe s similes tend to be nature related. For example, in chapter one, Okonkwo is described as as slippery as water. This simile is used to describe Okonkwo s skill ... Proverbs are short sayings giving advice or stating facts One proverb, used to teach children about responsibility, is, As elders said, if a child washed his hands, he could eat with kings. (p7) This is especially relevant to Okonkwo. His father was very irresponsible and lazy, and was always poor; he never got to eat with kings. Okonkwo wanted to be the opposite of his father, so he did everything he could to get a high status. These proverbs are used to communicate important traits and values that are important to the Igbo people. As well as similes and proverbs, folktales, stories that are passed down by word of mouth through generations. are used to show the Igbo culture to readers. OneA folktale Achebe used is about a quarrel between the Earth and Sun. In this, the Sun withheld rain for years, and the Earth dried up. No crops could grow and many were dying, so a vulture begs the Sky for rain. The sky pities the vulture and brings lots of rain. It was used to show men that need to be humble and ask for help. In Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe works to show the readers what the Igbo culture is like to sharpen the contrast between them and the colonists. To do this, he uses similes, proverbs, and folktales. These are bases around nature, hunting, and other important aspects of Igbo culture. They also show the values of the Igbo ... • 6. Pontius Pilate As A Negative Figure In The Bible Pontius Pilate as a Negative Figure in the Bible The Bible has been a well known text that many people have based their religion off of and use to guide them through their life. The interpretation may be different depending on who wrote the chapter, when the story was written, and depending on the person who is reading the story. All of these factors contribute to how we read the Bible. Contingent on the context of the situation, Pilate may be portrayed as a negative, neutral, or positive figure in the Bible. Pilate knew that the leaders of Jerusalem wanted Jesus murdered because it was out of jealousy. If Pilate knew that he was innocent from the start, why did he allow the crowd to overtake his power and condemn him for being the Son of God? Jesus was seen as a threat to the leaders of Jerusalem, so the leaders wanted him killed. Pilate ultimately had the power to determine who was to be punished, his hand was not forced to condemn Jesus. Yet, he still allowed Jesus to be crucified in Pilate s reign as governor. Like many people, Pilate fell to peer pressure. Pilate was aware of the fact that Jesus was innocent but still allowed him to be punished. He asked the crowd why they wanted Jesus to be crucified in hopes that they possibly would change their mind. The Bible states, Then he asked, Why, what evil has he done? But they shouted all the more, Let him be crucified (Matt 27:23). Pilate knew he was in the wrong because Jesus was innocent, yet he still allows him to be crucified. Pilate should have put his foot down because he was aware that Jesus did not commit a crime. The Bible also says, While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent a word to him, Have nothing to do with that innocent man, for today I have suffered a great deal because of a dream about him (Matt. 27:19). • 7. Intercultural Competency Paper Developing cultural competency is not always easy and it is not something that one acquires through birth. Instead, it is a developmental process that is nurtured over time. While the growth process may start off with a memorized list of acceptable and unacceptable behaviors that one is supposed to follow, true intercultural competence evolves when behaviors are internalized and occur naturally because they feel right (Medina López Portillo, 2004, p. 315). Stress, anxiety, and difficulties are sometimes signs that an individual is making progress towards cross cultural deepening (Stephenson, 2002, p. 99). At an extreme, when individuals are overwhelmingly stressed in a new cultural environment, their failure to adapt is expressed at times by emotional and physical health issues (Li et al., 2013). The measurement of an individual s intercultural competence is a complex challenge. The literature references numerous assessment tools that have emerged over time but it would be difficult to identify any one particular tool as the best and there seems to be little agreement on what dimensions of intercultural learning should be tested (Deardorff, 2011; El Ganzoury, 2012; Godwin Jones, 2013). In January 1941, reports were received that Japan might attack Pearl Harbor but military officials ignored these reports. They considered attacks on the Philippines and other European countries to be more likely, underestimating Japan s ability to conceal preparations for such an operation. Due to the success of the cryptanalysis machine called, Magic, American leaders started breaking Japanese military operational codes. The codes that were deciphered showed Japan was likely to take some type of military action (Irive). At that time, Japan had only a 12 month supply of petroleum to fuel its economy and war operations left. So the U.S. anticipated Japan would act quickly! The only questions that could not be answered were when and where (Woods). Pearl Harbor had been a major naval base since before 1898. In early ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. Analysis Of The Poem A Little Tooth By Thomas Lux Enjambment in Thomas Lux s Poem, A Little Tooth. Enjambment refers to the continuation of a clause or a sentence without a pause beyond the end of a line, stanza, or couplet. The purpose of enjambment in poetry is to enable an idea to progress beyond the limitations of a single line, mostly to emphasize a particular idea within the lines themselves. Also, poets adopt this style to surprise a reader, by introducing an idea in the first line, and changing it in the next. This allows a poet to draw the reader from one line to the next and create a fast pace or rhythm for a poem. In the poem, A Little Tooth , the poet typically wanted to demonstrates the flow of an idea beyond the limitation of a single line. The poet is very skilled in the ... Here, the poet uses the image of a twelve year old child who is alone and miserable to highlight the plight immigrants. The imagery is meant for the readers to show some sympathy towards immigrants. A P is about a teenager and his lust for young ladies and Araby is about a young boy who had a crush on a older girl. I will be comparing and contrasting the portrayal of women, love and epiphany in the two short stories A P and Araby. I believe women are portrayed negatively in A P. I have came to this conclusion because I believe Sammy treats the Queenie positively but treats the other two females negatively. Sammy decision to quit was not justified due to the girls not being there to praise and love him for being so brave to quit his job for them and the fact that he made such a major decision for people who he did not even know is stupid. Now he does not have a job nor the young ladies. I believe women are portrayed positively in Araby. I have come to this conclusion because of how much the little boy values this girl and his efforts to impress her. For example, each morning before school, he he camps by the window to see when she heads out to go to school. he leaves out when she does and follows her to the school. They part ways once she reaches her school but he ensures that she sees him, hoping that she would notice him. His crush confronted him for the first time to ask him if he was going to Araby. Salem had become a town where neighbors and enemies would blame each other of witchcraft, without actual evidence to support their accusations. Most of the accusations led to the victim being guilty. If the Puritans thought you were guilty, you had to either confess or be hanged. The Puritans believed that if you confessed, God would forgive you, which suggests the way of life for the Puritans. The Puritans were big believers of God and the bible. They believed that no one should commit sins, but if you confessed God would forgive you. The great belief in the bible insinuated the start of witchcraft and superstitions, because the bible expresses how one should not live with a witch. However he was not considered a Romanticist because he did not write the bulk of his poems in the main time period in which the movement was occurring, the 1800s to about 1850. Rather than being influenced by a movement, which often sets the tone for the topic or style of a written work, Burns was influenced by his life and his personal experiences. At age 15, Robert Burns wrote his first song, Once I Loved a Bonnie Lass, also called, Handsome Nell. This poem was inspired by a girl named Nelly Kilpatrick. Burns clearly shows that he was influenced by others in his poems specifically in this poem. Burns noted in a letter, The subject of it was a young girl who really deserved all the praises I have bestowed on her. I not only had this opinion of Her then but I actually think so still, now that the spell is long since broken, and the enchantment at an end. (The Songs of Robert Burns, 48). With Burns stating this, he clearly describes what this song was about and how the love he had for this girl moved him to write this song. This period will gradually begin to slow down and eventually stop altogether because the world will, quite literally, run out of fuel. This energy is created from the fossil fuels: coal, petroleum and natural gas. Fossil fuels are still cheap and high in supply, but the rate at which we are consuming them, which is only expected to increase, vastly exceeds the rate at which they regenerate. This creates the aforementioned problem of mankind running out of the required natural resources to fuel its own energy demands. The only solution to this problem that is possible, is to begin placing more influence renewable sources of energy and doing so as soon as possible. Renewable energy sources include solar, wind, hydroelectric and geothermal power. Each of these are insignificant alone, but as a group they become a viable alternative to nonrenewable energy sources. With education, medicinal practices and accessibility to resources, the risk of scurvy proves less viable in our modern society. However, scurvy dominated the outbreaks and contributed to the onset of other pathogens during the Middle Ages and the Age of Sail. With over two million died during voyages, the disease impacted the ability to explore the world, the economy and ended up wiping out new colonies established from the Old World (Harthorne, 1).
