to focus on is Andy Warhol s Telephone, which was painted in 1961. I had already chosen to do
my essay on this piece because I d been interested in Warhol and his overarching themes of

America and its materialistic mentality, I like the commentary he was attempting to make

experience. When I began to really look at it, I noticed how clean cut all the lines were and
made the assumption that Warhol had used silk screening as he did in many of his pieces.

The gold lustreware bowl by Galileo Chini is an object which could seem on first glance devoid
of special significance: just a beautiful decorative object enjoyed at face value. (Fig.1) But in the
seeming void I saw a repository of layered meanings which I attempted to interpret by examining
the artistic cross cultural influences in Florence in the late nineteenth century. And to address the
question of why the Mediaeval Hispano Moresque gold lustreware and the design motifs of the
Gothic Revivalist repertoires were found on this bowl. I examine why Chini became inspired to use
these designs and what they may have meant to him.

Analysis of Lars von Trier s Dogville Lars Von Trier s film Dogville is an interesting European spin
on how America is viewed. Produced in 2003, performed by an almost all American cast, written
by a Danish director, Dogville becomes not only a film about how Europeans might see America;
but how the audience can interpret what Trier is presenting to them. Dogville, is often viewed
and critiqued by many as a cynical spin on how the United States is perceived. After all, this film
is one of the easiest ways to see how a director can use the many Brechtian techniques to keep the
audience from being absorbed in the film.
Trier places his actors within what the audience can observe to be a small town. He carefully
lays out a map of buildings and other areas on the floor of a huge, undecorated studio. The
audience when introduced to Dogville are able to see a bird s eye view of what the town looks
like. The furniture and props are real, but there are no walls to obscure activities within each
defined area; only solid chalk lines separating what is a house, or a garden, or a town hall.
Consequently, the audience can see anything and everything that is happening all over the town;
they may see a character tending to their garden in the background while the camera is focused on

I Am My Graduate Career
When I began my undergraduate career, I had no inkling of what I wanted to do in the future. It
was early on that I discovered my passion for chemistry, math and physics classes which
galvanized my hunger for knowledge. In due time, I developed a proclivity for research that was
stirred largely by my first mentor, Dr. Daniel Lambrecht, during an American Chemical Society
meeting. I was so engrossed in his research on nanocatalysis and piezoelectrics that I walked up to
him as soon as the meeting ended and immediately made clear of my interest to join his group.

Kinship has traditionally been one of the key topics in social and cultural anthropology. There are
two primary reasons for this. First, although not all communities are constituted on the basis of
kinship, all humans have a kinship as individuals and are related to other individuals through it.
Second, for the sorts of tribal, classless, economically unspecialized societies that anthropologists
have mostly though no longer exclusively studied, kinship has appeared to be the main or even sole
form of social organization. These observations led various theoretical approaches, especially the
schools of functionalism and structuralism within social anthropology, to focusing on how social
groups are formed. They got interested in studying of how individuals are related to one another
through kinship, and what kinds of mutual rights and duties they have as a result. (R. Parkin.

Parkin (2012) also points out that unlike the functionalists and structuralists, cultural
anthropologists, elected to focus more greatly on the symbolic rather than socio practical aspects
of kinship. They are interested in the meanings attached to being a particular sort of relative. They
also study how symbols of and perspectives on an individual, the body, and gender tell kinship
ideas and practices. In broad terms, a study of kingship from the symbolic standpoint has prevailed
in America since the beginning of the twentieth century and periodically has been reinvented and
by the 1970s become more influential in world anthropology, especially in its poststructuralist
phase. The field of study of a kinship can be divided into three major categories: descent (that is,
relations between generations); affinity (marriage); and siblingship. However, the siblingship hasn t
been studied as widely as the first two categories. (R. Parkin. Kinship).
By the definition provided in the New Dictionary of Cultural Literacy, kinship is a relation between
two or more persons that is based on common ancestry (descent) or marriage (affinity). In his work
