The Utilitarian Theory Of Punishment
In this paper I will defend both the proponents and principles of the utilitarian theory of punishment,
namely addressing the utilitarian approach juxtaposed with the retributive. Before beginning to
make claims in any direction, a brief and to date synopsis of the utilitarian fundamentals regarding
punishmentwill be necessary. From there, I will present the utilitarian theories of punishment as not
only the most useful for a society, but also the best representation of criminal law being carried out
justly. Following this assertion I will refute objections made by retributivists, and in doing so
present a discovered common ground between the retributory criteria for just punishment and the
utilitarian theories. This will not serve to say I believe in impure retributivism over the utilitarian
theories, but rather will act as testament to the practicality of the utilitarian approach. Finally, I will
propose the most ethical response to criminality is found from the utilitarian fundamentals of
societal well being, mentioning specifically the vindictive theories of punishment as meeting the
utilitarian criteria. To the utilitarian, punishment is not an end in itself for the actions of a
wrongdoer. Utilitarians and I believe punishment should serve as a larger means to an end that will
benefit the future while righting the criminal actions of the past by employing deterrence,
rehabilitation, and the disablement of the unjust human in the perpetual attempt to increase overall

Melita A. Hoods
Bringing Light
December 12, 2014
Abstract: This experiment was conducted to determine if the light of a glow stick can be affected
by the temperature of water. In this the researcher will try to find what temperature of water
makes a glow stick glow brighter and how long it will stay lit. By proceeding in the experiment,
the data collected proved the hypothesis to be correct. Warmer water caused the glow stick to glow
brighter than it had before. On the other hand, the beaker with colder water made the stick stay lit
longer and the room temperature water didn t affect the glow stick as much. Glow sticks are
popular products that are used for fun and entertainment. Everyone knows what they are. But we
really don t know what they are. Glow sticks are plastic tubes with a glass vial inside. When ...

When the temperature changes so does the results. The blue stick, hot water, stayed lit for 112
minutes (an hour and fifty two minutes). The green stick, which was room temperature water,
stayed lit for 96 minutes (an hour and thirty six minutes). And lastly, the pink stick, in cold water,
stayed lit the longest for 122 minutes (two hours and two minutes).
The experiment could have had better results if done with multiple glow sticks. Make sure that the
thermometer is correct in the measurement of the water s temperature. It is important that you get
your data correct.
Conclusion
In the experiment, it was discovered that glow sticks will show more light and glow brighter in
water with higher temperatures than lower or room temperature. The experiment proved that the
hypothesis was correct in saying that warmer temperatures would make a glow stick glow brighter.
Though the hot water made the glow stick brighter and dim faster, the cold water caused the stick
to glow longer, and the room temperature water didn t affect the green glow stick in any significant

Due to Hawk s continuous screaming, Fitzgerald stabbed him right in front of Glass. When
Bridger returned asking where Hawk was, Fitzgerald pretended nothing happened and played it
off by asking, He was not with you? Bridger assumed he had run off. The next morning,
Fitzgerald woke Bridger up and told him there were about 20 Ree down by the creek and they
had to leave right away. Bridger insisted they must bury Glass first, but Fitzgerald did not want
to. Fitzgerald drug Glass to the grave he had dug previously and threw some dirt on him. Bridger
left a canteen with a symbol on it in his grave. The 2 men find their way back to their village to

Glass and giving him the proper burial. By this time Glass had crawled out of his shallow grave
and reached the nearest river where he had a run in with the Ree. He floated down stream for a
ways and banked himself to build a camp for the night. Above him in a field there were a large
group of buffalos running from a pack of coyotes. One of the Buffalo got killed by the coyote.
That night Glass noticed a fire gleaming off of branches nearby and an Indian man whose tribe
was killed by the Ree had found the Buffalo and was eating it. Glass crawled toward the man
showing signs of being injured and the man gave him food. The next morning he told Glass he was

31). If a conversion ratio, rather than a conversion price, is specified, the effective price of stock to
the bondholder may be determined by dividing the par value of the bond by the number of shares
exchangeable for one bond. The conversion price, which is determined when the bonds are 30%,
is usually from 10 to 20 percent above the prevailing market price of the common stock at the
time of issue. Both the issuing form and the investor expect that the market price of the stock will
rise above the conversion price, and that the conversion privilege will then be exercised by most or
all bondholders. The indenture typically includes a call provision so that the issuing firm can force
bondholders to convert. Therefore, it is evident that firms issuing convertible debt

often truly want to raise equity capital. The reasons that they choose convertible debt are discussed
below.
3. Financial Advantages and Disadvantages
3.1 Advantages The use of convertible debt would offer Hamilton advantages over straight debt
or stock issues. Bonds that are convertible into stock are in demand. Therefore, bond buyers are
willing to accept a low stated interest rate on such bonds, to pay a premium and accept a lower
yield, or to accept less restrictive covenants. Hamilton could thus obtain funds at a lower cost than
would be possible if it issued bonds without the conversion privilege. The advantages of a
convertible bond issue over a

Opposing Forces Civil Rights Movement
Opposing forces When looking back on the Sixties, one of the most dominating themes of that
period was the Civil Rights Movement. The quest for civil rights had been started long ago,
when the black man was freed from the bonds of slavery. Over a hundred years later, the
problem of blacks being treated as second class citizens still persisted. What could be done to
correct the present situation? Some, both blacks and whites, believed that non violence was the
only means to achieve civil rights, as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. preached. Others like Huey
Newton of the Black Panthers believed that violence was the only way. (W. H. Chafe: The
Unfinished Journey, Oxford University Press. 1999, p.316.) And lastly, some agreed with both ways

. . (Interchange.org: Michael T. Kaufman, Stokely Carmichael, Rights Leader Who Coined Black
Power http://www.interchange.org/Kwameture/nytimes 111698.html). Principally, Carmichael s
approach called for a considerable revamping of the present structure within America. More
fundamentally, change had to begin within the black communities themselves. Blacks need to
assert their own influence and control over their neighborhoods, school districts, etc. They need
to be active participants in government, because any federal program conceived with black
people in mind is doomed if blacks do not control it. Obviously, blacks knew what was happening
in their communities. They knew what the problems were and what issues needed to be
addressed. Without direct involvement of black people in the decision making process, the black
man s problems could and would not be completely solved. The militancy evident in Black Power
emanates from the strong, unwavering quest to redefine black culture and make change, or, as
Carmichael phrased it, take care of business . . . by whatever means necessary. The fact that the
black man would no longer put up with white racist attacks was quintessential. Carmichael
proclaimed, Black people should and must fight back . . . White people must be made to
understand that they must stop messing with black people, or the blacks will fight back! All too

How Did Cicero Influence The Economy
Born in 106 BC, Marcus Cicero was arguably a great Roman orator, lawyer, statesman, and
philosopher who had an extensive impact on the Political development at that time. However, he
supported different groups and individuals at different time, which limited his influence due to the
apparent changes in political allegiances to pursue what he felt was best for the republic. The
significance within Cicero career initially lies within his early career through the several legal cases
he undertook in his attempt to restore the republic to its encrypted and truest form leading him to
move along the Cursus Honorum. Additionally, his role in the legal case against Verres gained him
favourable reputation among the people, allowing him to strengthen... Show more content on

As both praetor and governor, Verres was engaged in corruption, and in desperation the Sicilian
people appealed to Cicero to prosecute Verres who had taken advantage of the economy. Cicero
first speech in the Verress case was the Divinato in Q Caecilium, which he spent 3 months
collecting the evidence resulting in Verress to flee due to the mass of evidence that was
obtained. His success lies within his Verrine Oration as it established Cicero as Rome s foremost
orator amongst the Roman courts. However, as suggested by Widemann, Cicero had some
personal motives, as he would be curule aedile he used this advantage to gain the support of the
Sicilian people, which gave him credibility to go forward and become consul. In winning the
case, Cicero was seen to play a high profile role in disclosing the corruption and mismanagement
that was rusting from the senatorial appointments to the provinces (Scullard, 1999). As a result,
Cicero was able to use the influence of his successful legal career to gain support to stand for the
consulship of 63 BC and played a very significant role in combating the individuals he saw as a

Body Dissatisfaction And Eating Disorders
Body image involves awareness of the form, shape, and size of one s body (Cash, 2012). This
includes both a perceptual awareness of one s appearance and an attitude toward one s
appearance (Cash, 2012). Body dissatisfaction involves the attitudinal portion of body image,
which refers to the extent to which a person is displeased with his or her body (Cash, 2012).
Body dissatisfaction contributes to the development of eating disorders because when people
are dissatisfied with their appearance, they are more willing to engage in self destructive
behaviors in order to lose weight (Skemp Arlt, 2006). The relationship between body
dissatisfaction and eating disorders is important because the majority of American women admit
that they are unsatisfied with their own body shape or weight and thus are more likely to
develop an eating disorder (Streigel Moore Smolak, 1996). Personality is composed of many
traits that together predispose a person to certain emotions, behaviors, and cognitions (Cash,
2012). Just as a person s physical appearance is unique to him or her, personality is also unique to
each individual. Although personalities can change and develop over time, they are seen as a
combination of long term traits that remain relatively stable across the lifespan (Cash, 2012).
Personality traits are influential to almost all aspects of daily life, including the way that people
perceive their bodies (Tylka Subich, 2004). Although several personality traits are likely

Economic Significance Of Renewable Energy Policy
ECONOMIC SIGNIFICANCE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY POLICY IN INDIA: A CASE
STUDY OF GUJARAT S SOLAR POLICY
I.Introduction
The transition to a greener energy regime in India is driven by both external factors, like energy
prices, market developments, political culture and the emphasis on climate change, as well as by
internal factors like the goal to achieve long term energy security and the need for enhancing access
to energy. The early emphasis on renewable energyin India was primarily on the wake of energy
security concerns mooted during the global oil crisis around 1970s. Commission of Additional
Sources of Energy (CASE) in 1981 was set up by Government of India (GoI) as one of the early
response to such a crisis. CASE was transformed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is argued that policy reforms initiated during the past two decades have transformed India s
energy sector from a predominantly government owned system to a system largely driven by
market elements. This is also evident in the case of renewable energy where the Ministry of New
and Renewable Energy (MNRE) identifies the development of renewable energy in India across
various phases: 1970s as research phase, 1980s as demonstration phase and 1990s onwards as
commercialization phase with greater participation of private sector entities.
The renewable sources of power in India still constitute a small portion of the entire power
production of the country, with the total installed capacity of 32,000 MW (which is about 12%
of the total installed capacity). Out of the total installed capacity, solar energy constitutes about
10 % (3200 MW). The solar potential of the country is huge. It is estimated that about 12.5 % of
India s landmass, which is about 413,000 square kilometers, can be exploited to harness solar
energy. The country on an average enjoys 300 sunny days with an average hourly solar radiation
of about 200 MW/square kilometer. The major recent initiative in the solar space is the Jawaharlal
Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) launched in 2010 by the Central

The Pit And The Raven Analysis
One way Poe demonstrates suspense in these works is through the use of an unreliable narrator. In
both of these pieces, the main character is a mysterious and untrustworthy narrator. In The Raven,
the narrator starts by saying, ONCE upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
/ While I nodded, nearly napping (1, 3). The narratorhas just awoken to the sound of knocking at
his door. While it is up for debate, the narrator could very well be dreaming or hallucinating about
the ravenand the tapping, but the reader and even the narrator are waiting for a signal to explicitly
show that it is just a figment of his imagination. In the other story, The Pit and the Pendulum, the
narrator is introduced to us as criminal who has been sentenced to death. The narrator describes the
moment saying, The sentence the dread sentence of death was the last of distinct accentuation
which reached my ears [before swooning] (263). The reader discovers at the beginning of the
story that the narrator has committed a crime so terrible that he has been sentenced to death. The
audience spends the whole story trying to figure out when he will die and by which type of
torment he will die to. In both of Poe s works the narrators are unreliable characters who the reader
cannot completely trust, which leads to the suspense of waiting for the whole truth. Another literary
element Poe uses in these stories to build suspense is a mysterious tone. In The Raven, the narrator

Persuasive Essay On Little Grand Canyon
Providence Canyon, or the Little Grand Canyon as some call it, is a well known tourist
attraction in southwest Georgia. It is, as of now, a state park. However many believe that it
should be recognized and made a national park. There are many reasons to support this decision.
There is various types of wildlife, it could also be good for education on erosion and rock
formations, and it would be good for the economic purposes because it is engulfed in tourism
every year. This is why many believe that Providence Canyon should be made a national park.
Wildlife is a big game changer when it comes to dealing with tourism and tourist attractions.
While Providence Canyon may not have dinosaurs, it does have many other variants of animal.

3d Ultron Research Paper
How has James Cameron s adoption to 3D advanced the film industry?
Early stages of 3D
3D has been around for a long time, the earliest confirmed 3D film called The Power of Love
(Directed by Nat G. Deverich, Harry K. Fairall) , which was displayed at an out house called
Ambassador Hotel Theatre in Los Angeles on the 27th of September 1922. Since then 3D films
hasn t exactly been the best film experience for everyone to watch, I m sure Deverich and Fairall
wasn t expecting this out come. The truth is, the majority of cinema released films these days are
3D to make extra money rather than films specifically made to be in 3D. A good example is
Avengers: Age of Ultron. This film may of been filmed in 3D but it still doesn t give you the feel
you expect, fair enough the characters pop out a little or focused objects pop out more than the
foreground, but this isn t really pushing 3D to its limits.

South Africa 2010 The 11th of July of 2010, took place at the Soccer City Stadium
(Johannesburg, South Africa) the final of the FIFA World Cup between Netherlands and Spain.
That was a day I would never forget because we became world champions for the first time in our
history thanks to a goal of Andres Iniesta during the overtime in the minute 116. But to get to the
final we had to suffer a lot. Everything began when a team full of very talented and very shameless
players managed to gain the UEFA Euro 2008 against the almighty and fearsome Germany. This
fact permitted the whole Spanish people to dream and to ask themselves: Why not? Why not

We played against Paraguay, strong team with very fast and vertical players, they made us play
the worst match of the championship because they develop a very solid defensive system which
kept us off their goal. The end of the game was close, Paraguayan players were exhausted so the
SpainВґs coach decided to send the entire team to the offensive and we finally scored and won
the match. Germany was the next step to get in to the final. Until then, Germany had realized a
very clean championship. They really wanted to play against us to take revenge from what
happened two years ago, but the revenge will have to wait. The victory was deserved, we played
a very complete game and we beat them in all the facets of the game. Only one bump left for
winning the title, Netherland. The final was there, that was the moment that all Spanish people had
waited and dreamed for decades. They knew we were better and their head coach didnВґt want us
to play and dominate the game so he proposed a very violent game full of fouls and aggressive
plays which in my opinion can be qualified as extremely violent, but we still following our
philosophy of soccer and 120 minutes later Spain was the Champion of the FIFA World Cup2010.

While looking at the results, I noticed that the cold temperature solution glowed for the longest
time with an average of 14.5 minutes. The room temperature solution was next with an average
of 13.5 minutes. Finally, the warm temperature glowed for the shortest amount of time with an
average of 9.5 minutes. I noticed that the solubility affected the glow rate. The warm water was
able to quickly dissolve the copper sulfate, Luminol, and Perborate mixture. However, the cold
water took the longest because it was hard for it to dissolve. In order to keep the dissolving
process going, every so often, I mixed it. My results indicate that if you want to locate the
presence of blood quickly, you should use a warmer solution. However, if you want a longer
glow, a colder solution may be a better choice. A t test was not used because there were only two
trials. Therefore, it would be hard to compare and call it significant or not significant. My
hypothesis was correct, because I predicted that the colder solution would take the longest. I think
the results came out the way they did because the crystals had a harder time dissolving in the cold
water, than in the hot water.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

realized with this was that my data would be opinionated. Therefore, it would be hard to justify.

What Is The Literary Elements Of The Road Not Taken
Difficult choices made in life may conflict with the future if we think, or make the wrong choice.
In the poem The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost the traveler is faced with a decision about
which road to take. In the literal sense the poem is about a person taking a walk through the
woods; however, metaphorically it explores a person s journey in life. Our decisions, especially
important ones, have a great effect on our future. Making difficult choices can take you down a
different pathway to success. Frost uses literary elements: imagery, point of view, and setting to
create meaning. Imagery, is one literary element Frost uses in the poem. For example, the speaker
comes to a halt when he notices that Two roads diverged in a yellow wood... Show more content on

the word equally which is meaning he still cannot decide which path to choose. Thinking about
choosing the less traveled road, the speaker looks at the road and sees green lonely patches
Because it was grassy and wanted wear (Frost). In my mind the setting to me helps me imagine
him in the woods trying to clear his head when being trampled on by another choice or decision to
make. The speaker looks at his surrounding and choices to help decide which path to take, and if it
s the right one. The last literary element Frost was setting, to help the reader understand where and

Personal Culture And National Culture
Part B In this paper I will begin by defining personal culture and national culture. After, I will then
elaborate my own personal and national culture. I will continue to talk about the subject with the
person that I have chosen for my cultural group, my mother, and I will identify her personal and
national culture. Lastly, I will talk about my own personality and how it has a connection with my
own natural culture; knowing this is important, it lets us know who we are, and how we act with
people who are from different cultures. Personal culture, is a share combination of an individual
s traits, skills, and personality. It is formed within the context of their ethnic, racial, familial, and
educational environments. Everyone s personal culture is unique to them (Mensah, 2015, CH3

because everyone comes from a different culture, and they are always bound to do something
unique that is different to others. Ever since I can remember, my family and I have always

As for the Acquisitions, the tracts had to be tied and add the location information needed to be

Message of Hope in Rap Essay
Message of Hope in Rap
The three year anniversary of Notorious B.I.G s murder is fast approaching and many people
still rave about his music. What made him so special was the connection he had with his
listeners. He found many ways to incorporate his life stories into his music that relates to every
other thug growing up in the streets from New York City to Los Angeles. The perfect example
of this is his double CD, Life after Death where most of his songs are about death and how
people deal with it. Its quite ironic how he sort of predicted his own death in the album but by
doing so, it helped his fans and family deal with his death better. To understand his songs, you have
to understand the life he grew up in. Raised in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Sky is the limit and you know that you can have what you want, be what you want, have what you
want, be what you want
This chorus gives hope to the other struggling people to have faith and not to give up on life
because anything you want, you can have. It just takes the effort to be proud. This is what
Notorious was special at doing. He could deliver the message better then any other person out

talk about being rich and leading a good life now that he has the money, he also realized the
problems of having money. In his song, Mo Money Mo Problems he talks about how money brings
the downs as well as the ups. In the intro of the song, Puff Daddy says how money makes you the

Persuasive Essay On Community Service
The options for community service are endless. After narrowing down my options, I applied to
volunteer at the Crystal Lake Public Library this past summer. Having to go in for an interview
was a new experience for me, considering how I have never applied for a job. I believe that the
exposure to the interview process did two things for me: first, it put me out of my comfort zone,
and second, it taught me invaluable lessons about applying for future jobs and programs. This is
because I am the kind of person who can get nervous easily, and I struggle to hide it sometimes.
An interview is a type of situation that I would feel nervous in; however, I was able to overcome
my fear and apply to the library anyways. Therefore, I learned what I should expect to be asked,
and I understand how I should properly respond. Once I was accepted to the library s volunteer
network, I was able to choose which department I would work for in order to serve the community.
By volunteering at the library, I improved the Youth Services department, particularly by
participating in the Adopt a Shelf program. One part of my job was to rearrange the books in the
correct order when they got disorganized. This made it easier for parents and children to find the
books, movies, and CDs they were looking for. Another task that I enjoyed was replacing the
books to their proper location from the clean up cart. It is important for books to be on the
shelves where they belong because otherwise it appears that books are not available. My favorite
part of volunteering for the library, however, was getting to help kids pick out the books they
were looking for. I remember many of the people I helped, but one of my fondest moments
occurred on one of my first days. I was working in the junior fiction department, and there was a
young girl there. She wanted to find a new series of books to read for the summer reading
program. It was special to show her the novels that I read when I was her age, especially when she
chose to start the Mother Daughter Book Club books: my favorite series in middle school. It was
moments like that that made me proud to be a part of the Crystal Lake Public Library and their
volunteer team. As a result of my work at the

Salt Water On Mars
Space exploration has interested the world for many decades, even centuries. From the time
Galileo first looked up into the stars, to the time of rockets to enter into outer space so much has
changed. Through the countless years of devoted research for life sustaining substances a recent
discovery may have changed our world forever. For years we have wondered if there has been a
water source on another planet. With Marsbeing in a more ideal location than Venus, the second

Jane Austen s Pride And Prejudice
Anjan Amarnath Mr. Holaday British Literature/Writing P6 9 May 2016 Clever Title While
Jane Austen s novel Pride and Prejudice is often regarded for it s strong representations of
feminism, the novel strongly portrays the Oedipus complex through the Bentley sisters
unexpected and contradictory relationships. The relationship of a child with their parent is one
of the strongest influences in one s later life and relations, so much so that a child is sometimes
forced to repress their true desires. The novel tracks Elizabeth Bennet s relationship with Mr.
Darcy, a relationship which endures a stark, unexpected change that is a result of Elizabeth s
Oedipal complex. Initially, Elizabeth detests Mr. Darcy, as she views him and a narcissistic man
with unreasonably high expectations; however, near the end of the novel, she becomes infatuated
with him and the two end up getting married. Mr. Bennet, Elizabeth s father, is a very soft
spoken man who deliberately defies his wife, his female counterpart, and doesn t seem to openly
express his love for his family very often. That is, with the exception of Elizabeth who happens to
be his favorite daughter, as demonstrated throughout the book through his distinct affection and
care towards her and his indifference towards his other four daughters. Due to the parallelism
between Mr. Darcy and Mr. Bennet, it is clear that Elizabeth s attraction to Mr. Darcy is deeply
rooted within the Oedipus complex. Mr. Bennett expresses a low

Klinefelter Syndrome Research Paper
0.78 percent of Americans a total of 2,540,460 identify as transgender(denoting or relating to a
person whose sense of personal identity and gender does not correspond with their birth sex). The
number of people identifying as transgender is on the rise and so is the thought that gender is
determined by what the individual identifies as. However genderis determined by genetics. The X
and Y chromosomes are what determine the gender of a person. Depending on whether the sperm
that impregnates a femalecarries an X or Y will determine the gender of the offspring. A Y

The Portrayal Of The Catholic Church
The Portrayal of the Catholic Church in Film The Catholic Church as we know it is much different
than that of the past. Love, acceptance, forgiveness, giving, and tradition are all things that come to
mind when the words Catholic Church are heard. If one were to ask those living in the 1400 1800s
what comes to mind when thinking about the Catholic Church, their answer would have been very
different. With the exception of a few countries, there is a separation of the church and state in
todays government. In our current state of government, the church has no say in the justice system
or decisions made by the government. There is no priest or king who rules over the country or
attends government meetings. In early Europe, this was not the case. The CatholicChurch had great
influence on the government. The church actually was the government in some countries who
operated under a theocratic ruling. With Godbeing the ultimate ruler, the Priest or King was the
next in power. The royals are supposedly Gods chosen ones. They are the closest to him and
everyone else is below them. The church had power over the military, who had access to education,
individuals socioeconomic class, the laws, and almost anything else one could think of.1 The
ultimate goal of the church was to convert anyone who was not Christian into a Christian, and to
conquer lands that were not under Christian rule and use them under the power of the Catholic
Church. The goal of the inquisition was to send out

office. He even starves himself to death by refusing to eat, but in the end, the spirit of Bartleby still
remains alive and haunts the narrator. Throughout his life, the narrator remains haunted by the

This aspect of Bartleby s heroism affects the story by developing a new theme to the story and
developing the character of the narrator who is part of the story as the boss to Bartleby. It
develops the theme of association between chronometrical time and the world of the spirits. It
also changes the character of the narrator because he develops a new attitude towards time, and
the world of spirits, which changes his normal way of belief. The narrator of the story becomes
shocked when he discovers that Bartleby, who only feeds on ginger nuts, has never left the
office. This is actually the first time that the narrator experiences the spiritual power that Bartleby
possesses. The narrator is so much business oriented that he only looks at the world in terms of
profits. However, when he encounters this aspect of the spirit of Bartleby, his attitude towards life
changes. He begins appreciating the fact that Bartleby deserves better treatment, not in the
capitalist way. The narrator even sees what is a right, just as an asset, but this perception is later
changed by Bartleby s spirit: What earthly right have you to stay here? Do you pay any rent? Do
you pay my taxes? Or is this property yours? (Melville, 41). The perception of the narrator, of
everything including rights of Bartleby as assets prevents the narrator from understanding the
spiritual aspect of the pride in Bartleby. Although the narrator

Imagery Throughout History Has Been A Big Factor In Creating
Imagery throughout history has been a big factor in creating social norms and acts as a site of
conflict. Throughout time, we have used art pieces such as stories, mythology, paintings and
movies as a way of conflict, to get a point across, or to tell a story. A big theme presented over
time has been the ideologies of women and their role. Through time, we are able to see the way in
which the roles of a female has been continuously constructed and reconstructed over and over
again. This paper will look at the portrayal of femme fatale throughout history showing the lack of
progression when it comes to genderstereotypes.
The femme fatale is a mysterious, seductive woman who lures men into dangerous or compromising
situations, attracting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These characteristics are even present in the story of Adam and Eve. In fact, characteristics drawn
from biblical contexts seem to be very prominent. It is through these images of a woman that
first create these gender stereotypes. As we go on, it will be seen that different pieces of work
allow maintaining and further reinforcing the stereotype of the femme fatale. The story of Adam
and Eve is perhaps the first example of a femme fatale. Eve the first woman on earth, created
from a man s rib as a gift to Adam from god. Eve sought the Tree of Knowledge and as the story
goes, bit into the apple in the Garden of Eden, letting all evil into the world. Eve brought about the
fall of mankind and introduced things such as sin and death. She was tempted by the serpent and
further, tempts Adam with her beauty and sexuality to bite the apple thus being the classic example
of a femme fatale.
Another popular example is taken from Jewish tradition. The very popular Lilith is also
associated with the first version of creation. Estimated at 1025 1594 BCB Lilith was Adams first
wife. God is said to have created Lilith from clay, not from a mans rib, thus being equal to man.
The story goes as Lilith shows up as a naked lady to seduce husbands who otherwise are reasonable
husbands. Lilith s name is associated with being related to a dark deity, ex goddess, ancient demon,
and even a vampire throughout time. One thing

The closure of this clinic would go against the culture that the healthcare organization has promoted
and the mission that it pursues. Healthcare organizations have an obligation to protect vulnerable
populations by ensuring that access to healthcare is not hindered (Weber, 2001). This obligation is
derived from the principle of common good. According to this principle, organizations need to
embrace integrity as they promote the social welfare of communities (Kammer, 2012).The short
term goals that the hospital needs to develop to address this problem includes assuring the
community and the medical staff that the well baby and pre natal clinic remains open.
It has been observed that leaders are in the best position to offer direction to their organizations

The Psychology Of Mental Illness
The history as well as the present study of psychological disorders is confusing and
intriguing.Psychological disorders have been misunderstood since the 4th century BC.
Throughout history knowledge and science have presented various causes, treatments and
diagnoses. With the basic idea proposed by Hippocrates of the connection of our mood to the
color of our bodily fluids to today s modern and scientific diagnoses and treatments ,
psychological disorders can now be effectively treated ( The History Of The Psychiatric
Diagnostic System, 2013). The psychological disorders videos in MyPsychLab were all
informative. Out of the 10 videos I found the History of Mental Illness , Personality Disordersand
Tami Greens Congressional Briefing on Borderline Personality to be informative and created
awareness in different areas and ways.
The History of Mental Illness is an informative podcast based off of an interview with Dr. Rodger
Christenfeld, the research director at the Hudson River Psychiatric Center located in
Poughkeepsie, NY. Dr. Christenfeld spoke of the psychiatric centers change of names over time
from an Insane Asylum to the present name Psychiatrist Center as well as the possibility of
different labels in the future. He discussed a time of social reform approximately 50 years before
Freud in which Charles Dickens presented the idea of psychological disorders being an illness .
Christenfeld addressed the treatment of the mentally ill throughout history.

Economic Impacts of American Fast Food upon Developing Countries
Amanda Lee
Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts
Introduction
Developments leading up to the 21st century are best characterized by the economic advancements
found in countries all over the world. Regardless of the level of these advancements in a country,
achieving higher living standards, financial stability, and overall growth of the economy are the
perpetual goals for a country. Because every country is unique in terms of their economic,
political, and social standings, different methods in order to obtain these goals are to be
considered. However, the basic principles for achieving these goals seem to follow the trends of
globalization: investment, technological improvements, secure institutions, and a market economy.
Countries that benefit the most from globalization are found to be of high growth. The integration
of a global economy in a country has prompted entrepreneurs to regard the world as one market in
the form of franchising. With that being said, economic success can measure the effects of Western
commercial globalization from the results of American fast food franchise. Innovations in
technology and society have eradicated the difficulties with communication between different
populations. This transition from communal living standards to the interdependence of economies
throughout the world will later be known as economic globalization

Analysis Of George Orwell s A Hanging
Under the pen name of George Orwell, Eric Arthur Blair writes an essay titled, A Hanging, to
show how capital punishment is wrong. This essay is a past experience Orwell has been across.
Orwell changes his view on capital punishment, who has the right to shorten someone s life. Orwell
witnesses a hangingof a Hindu man and realizes that it is inhumane and immoral to take a life away
from someone. Although Orwell has helped with hangings in his past he realizes that capital
punishmentis wrong and it is not right to take someone s life away.
During the time of the writing of this essay Orwell was living in Burma as a police officer in a
local jail to oversee and help with executions. He witnessed many deaths and hangings in his duty
as a policeman. Orwell did not like Burma (Biography.com Editors, p.2) and his witnessing of these
hangings and mistreatments is where the motivation, to stop the process of executions, for his
writing came from.
Right from the beginning of the essay, Orwell sets the mood by describing the scene as a sodden
morning of the rains (Orwell, p.1). The rain is used to set a sad mood for the essay because of
the events that are about to occur. The schedule for the day is to execute, hang, a prisoner after
his appeal was denied by the court. It is not a happy day for anyone, not the guards, not the
prisoner, or his fellow inmates. Orwell also uses the word, Sickly, to describe the upsetting mood,
as the color of yellow coming over the walls in

Because his American supplied army and his American trained secret police kept the shah in
power, his opponents hated the United States almost as much as they hated their autocratic ruler.
The shah s rule was not one of constant decency (Carnes and Garraty). From 1977 to 1979, Iran
grew more and more unstable, as the Iranian people s hatred of the shah further intensified. 1977
saw numerous riots, along with both the wounding and even killing of large numbers of the Iranian
people. The Iranian people finally rose up against the shah in 1978, by January of the next year the
shah was forced to flee. A revolutionary government headed by a religious leader, the Ayatollah
Ruhollah Khomeini, assumed power. He that freedom was an enemy of Islam, as well as that Islam
condoned terror. Khomeini denounced the United States as the Great Satan whose support of the
shah, he said, had caused the Iranian people untold suffering (Carnes and Garraty). Upon his exile,
the shah was dying of cancer, after seeking refuge in numerous countries he was finally given
refuge in the United States. The Iranian people wouldn t have it, and began protesting outside the
U.S. Embassy demanding the shah be returned, tried, and hanged. The Iranian Hostage Crisis was

I chose to write about Jimi Hendrix because I think he was a very talented musician, who made
great influence on today s music.
Johnny Allen Hendrix was born November 27th, 1942 and died the 18th of September 1970. He
was later named James Marshall Hendrix in 1946. Hendrix was a singer, guitarist and songwriter.
He was probably one of the biggest, most influential guitarists in the world. A lot of today s pop
and rock artist says that they are more or less inspired by Jimi Hendrix music. He is often described
as one of the greatest instrumentalist in the history of rock music .
He started playing guitar in Seattle, Washington in 1969 when he was only 15 years old. He later
moved to England in 1966. In a short ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He was criticized for preforming white music and having white band members.
Narcotics
Hendrix used a lot of drugs, mostly LSD, weed and sleeping pills. This bad habit is most likely
what led to his early death, especially the sleeping pills.
Jimi Hendrix influences on music
He was most likely one of the greatest rock artists ever. Even though he had a short career that only
lasted about four years. He shocked the music world with his playing style and rhythms, his
opening on the song Purple haze in particular.
When Hendrix music became more and more important in American rock, people didn t think about
black music as a synonym to soul and blues anymore. He changed the way black music had
sounded like forever. While creating the extraordinary playing style he had, Hendrix made the
groundwork for what later evolved to different genres, for example R B, British rock, blues and
soul. Hendrix isn t remembered as the first black rock star. He s remembered as the first rock star .
He explored new style and techniques, which helped him lay the foundation for several music
genres. He liked to push boundaries just to create the perfect

Supply Chain Strategy Of A Convenience Store Chain
An attempt to be responsive from a convenience store chain should include the supply chain
strategy that fit with competitive factors such as high quality, quick response, flexibility, service
and innovation. First option can be expanding new stores in areas with existing clusters of stores.
This way, the store chain can gain quicker awareness among customers and receive high density
market presence. Just like 7 Eleven, after the growth of its stores, the company focuses on
increasing the number of original items that were available only at their stores. Company like Zara
also has the same strategy, where they products are displayed based on store locations, which
makes every store unique and local adaptive. Flexible hours can enhance... Show more content on

Last but not least, the delivery system worked on trust in order to reduce the delivery time spent
at each store. Therefore, if there is a mistake in delivery, the store personnel cannot inform the
delivery person right away and that might take even more time to fix. (c)Facility Location: To
ensure efficiency, 7 Eleven Japan have implemented a market dominate strategy to saturate an
area with stores. Based on the strategy, all manufacturing facilities are centralized to improve
brand awareness, and also lower the transportation cost by aggregating them and achieve
efficiency. Inventory management:7 Eleven Japan offered its stores a choice from a set of 5000
stock keeping units. Each store carried on average about 3000 stock keeping units depending on
local customer demand, and the food items were classified in four categories: (1) Chilled temp;
(2) Warm temp; (3) Frozen items; (4) Room temp. Transportation:7 Eleven Japan requires all
suppliers to deliver to their distribution center, and use their own trucks for replenishment from
store to store. It offered three times a day store delivery of all rice dishes, and twice a day
delivery of bread and other fresh food. In addition, there were four categories of temperature
controlled trucks, and each made deliveries to multiple retail stores. All deliveries were made
during off peak hours, and did not require the delivery person to be present when the store
personnel scanned in the

Group Communication And Group Analysis
Within the groups that I have been facilitating, as well as individual meetings, I have been very
mindful of my communication with those whom I have been interacting with. I am constantly
working to use open ended questions, being reflective and summarizing what I hear. The group
topics that I choose are on a multitude of subjects. When considering what groups to hold I take
into consideration the topic I feel they would benefit from, I speak with staff and get input from
them as well as the clients who participate in the groups. I follow the same routine with topics that
I present to individuals as well. I feel that the individuals as well as the groups will be more
receptive and engaged when they are interested in the topics. I personally

The 1960s: A Generation of Change
Popular Beliefs
When you think of the 1960s, what comes to mind? Many people think the era of drug abuse
and peace signs. The 60s were the beginning of hallucinogenic and barbiturates, which were
considered psychedelic drugs. Psychedelic drugs cause a change in cognition and perception,
which became popular in hippies, also referred to as a flower child. They were characterized by
free sex, drug abuse, and rock and roll music. These people were free spirits that lived through
peace and love. During this time, free sex was promoted and monogamy was rare. In addition, the
1960s was the start for the Beatles. The Beatles were a popular rock and roll band from England
who were very popular in the hippie community. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During his presidency, he successfully took the United States out of a recession, established the
Peace Corps, avoided a nuclear war during the Cold War and contributed to the treaty to end the

men and women equally for doing the same work (nolo.com). This was a big step for equal right
for women. JFK was also assassinated in 1963 in Dallas, TX during a presidential motorcade in
Dealey Plaza. After his assassination Lyndon Baines Johnson became president and was mostly

The Issue Of Canadian Fisheries
LORRAINE MBUYI ECONOMICS 405
Natural resource economics is greatly concerned with solving a phenomenon referred to as the
Tragedy of the Commons , also known as a situation that results in the overuse of open access
resources by independent agents, looking to retrieve as many resources as possible without giving
regard to other users of the common property. This essay focuses on the issue of Canadian
fisheries as a common example of the issue and a topic subject to much academic research.
This essay serves as a two part discussion of policies regarding common property open access.
Specifically, two main categories of common property source regulation price and quantity
regulation. The goal is to explain what properties of a resource ... Show more content on

Economists efforts to create a regulatory infrastructure have led to certain key policy assumptions.
The first step towards determining the effects of the fishing industry is to calculate the amount of
fishing capacity per season, based upon anticipated prices, costs, biomass level, and the regulations
set by the regulatory agency (Homans Wilen, 1997, p. 3). The government assumes a regulatory
stance in light of environmental goals, anticipating an amount of fishing activity, which is
acceptable. The combination of the government and the industry should theoretically result in an
equilibrium between the companies and the regulatory sector. Their main task is to characterize an
equilibrium between the fishing industry and the regulatory infrastructure so that various situations
related to fishing are taken into account. The cycle of biomass growth between seasons is
dependent on the corresponding harvest, biological growth, environmental effects and the
predetermined quota. Ultimately, it is assumed a full steady state can be reached. The goal of
quantity regulation is to achieve a steady state of biomass in the long run, given constant industry
and regulatory behaviour (Homans Wilen, 1997, p. 9). PRICE REGULATION
Using economic incentives to conserve fisheries must occur under a regulatory framework that is
enforceable. Price regulation as a result of taxes leaves many

Animal Characteristics Of A Bat Star
What s a bat and star combined that lives underwater? The answer is bat star! Bat star, or asterina
miniata (scientific name) is a marvelous invertebrate. Its scientific name was way too complicated
to comprehend, but bat star had another name called patiria miniata , which meant vermilion dish
(scarlet dish). In this animalreport, I will be presenting animal anatomy and appearance (bat star s
physical characteristics), classification (what kind of invertebrate bat star is, how I know it, etc.),
habitat (where bat star lives) and diet (what bat star eats and other information about bat star s
food). A bat star looks like an ordinary chubby, plump starfish. However, it has webbings on the
arms that look like a bat wing! A bat star is not enormous or huge. It s normally about 4 inches in
radius. It can be a little bit bigger though. It can be 6 to 8 inches in radius as well. It has a radial
symmetry and it can weigh up to 11 lb according to general fact about starfish. Unfortunately, a bat

Bat stars eat other types of sea star, algae and other animals and plants. Since bat stars are
omnivores, bat stars can eat plants and animals at the same time, dead or alive. Bat stars get
their food by scavenging animals. However, bat stars are unusual. They can push their stomach
from their mouth to catch their prey. Once they catch their prey, they digest it with a digestive
liquid. Bat stars are somewhere in the middle of the food web. We can see that bat stars are
somewhere in the middle of the food web by looking at their prey and predators. We can clearly
see that bat stars eat algae, other sea stars, etc. This shows that bat stars are not in high position of
the food web like humans that eat almost everything. However, bat stars are not really low in the
food web because it is a predator to shellfish, tunicate worms, etc. This shows that bat stars are in
the middle. They get eaten by predators, but bat stars themselves are also

equipped and confident students. Academically, TWBI students receive higher grades because of
the curriculum. Furthermore, 87% to 93% of past TWBI students stated they would not drop out

adapting to the new language; independent, figuring out the language themselves; and confident,
taking pride in bilingualism. The TWBI program not only teaches another language, but also

The programs should also start from Kindergarten to Eighth grade, so students can not only have
sufficient time to become bilingual, but also have the opportunity to either continue that language
in advance placement classes in high school or learn another language in their four years of high
school. The program will function with at least thirty percent of one language group with the other
language group in the same class room, despite the program s preference for half and half (AlanГs
RodrГguez). There are two different types of two way immersion to choose: 90:10 and 50:50.
90:10 programs commence with 90% instruction of the foreign language, gradually leveling to
50:50 by fourth grade. In the 50:50 model, both languages receive equal amount of time across all
eight years. While both types of programs allow students to perform higher on test than any other
program, 90:10 students tend to score higher and be more fully bilingual than students in 50:50
(Lindholm Leary). Iliana AlanГs and Mariela A. RodrГguez also remarks, the 90/10 model requires

The Tragic Hero Of Shakespeare s Hamlet
[insert introduction here] Macbeth and Hamlet are both tragic heroes whose fall from greatness
disturbs the order of their kingdoms.
A tragic hero is a character, one of high esteem, whose internal imperfection leads to their downfall.
Both Macbeth and Hamlet are well known and of high social class when an unexpected calamity
hits. Hamlet, the son of the king of Denmark, is a charismatic prince most immediate to [the]
throne (Shakespeare, Ham I.ii.109). It can be inferred that he lives a rather extravagant and
convenient lifestyle. That is, until his father dies and his uncle takes both the throne and Hamlet s
mother as wife. From Hamlet s perspective this is a calamity for two reasons: Hamlet was heir to
the throne, and his mother ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His reaction upon learning this fate is twofold: Macbeth can wait patiently for legitimate royalty, or
he can give into his black and deep desires, and steal the throne from Duncan (X). Hamlet s fate, on
the other hand, is to set right the murder of his father(x). It both cases, neither of the characters fates
are what killed them, but rather their tragic flaws. While Macbeth ultimately succumbs to his
unchecked ambition and rashly murders any potential and unlikely threat to the throne, Hamlet
procrastinates and fails to fulfill his revenge in a timely, simplistic manner. Because of his
uncontrolled ambition, Macbeth blindly trusts the witches who promise inviolable royalty, murders
his closest friend, and kills the family of his nemesis. Hamlet, on the other hand, weary of the
legitimacy of the supernatural, puts on an antic disposition and delays his revenge as he searches
for confirmation of the ghost s accusations (x). Hamlet s procrastination causes him to miss
multiple opportunities at revenge. For example, he chooses not to kill a vulnerable, praying
Claudius (x). In this way, Macbeth and Hamlet fall victim to their own actions. Had Macbeth been
satisfied with just his throne, he would not have risen any suspicion amongst the others. Similarly,
had Hamlet acted in a timely manner and killed Claudius the moment he was made aware of his

Influence of Ww1 on the Artwork of Early 20th Century
On August 1st 1914, Germany declared war on Russia, and on the 3rd, declared war on France.
Starting at the top of the previous page the first piece of artwork I chose to review is Max
Beckmann s piece Der Kriegsausbruch (Declaration of War), created in 1914 as the declarations
of war had just been announced. This is a drawing depicting the reaction of passers by in Berlin
to the news of war being declared. I chose this piece specifically because of the sketchy style of
drawing. I find that the looseness of his lines give the piece a feeling of anxiousness or even
stress that I imagine many of the citizens depicted in the piece were feeling at the time. The second
piece I chose was created by artist, Alfred Kubin, entitled Die... Show more content on

When it comes to hiring and retaining talent, culturematters. In his work and research at Glassdoor,

Like Youth Villages, Netflix shares a mix of characteristics from each of the four cultures of the
competing values framework. Netflix was started in 1997 by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph
with the idea of providing online movie rentals. By 1998, Netflix provided unlimited DVD Rentals
through a monthly subscription. Today, Netflix provides online streaming services through multiple
game consoles, televisions, and computer devices. They now have 93 million customers world
wide. The common theme in the seven aspects of Netflix s culture is that of an Adhocracy Culture.
( About Netflix, n.d.)
Adhocracy cultures, as defined by Kreitner and Kinicki, foster the creation of innovative products
and services by being adaptable, creative, and fast to respond to changes in the marketplace (2013,
p. 70). Netflix maintains two values that identify their adhocracy culture and could help improve
the organizational culture at Youth Villages. Before discussing their values, Netflix points out that
anyone can establish espoused values and put them up in their lobby. They reference the espoused
values of Enron versus the actions and behaviors that ultimately brought their demise as an
example. Netflix states that their values are in fact enacted values, the values and norms that are
exhibited by employees (Kinicki Kreitner, 2013, p. 65).
One of Netflix s values that reflect an Adhocracy culture, is their value of High

Congo’s Era of Damnation
In the year 1885, King Leopold II of Belgium imperialized the Independent State of the Congo.
Leopold set the area up under his own personal rule. His rule was an extremely negative and very
unwanted thing that plunged the area into an era of damnation.
The early history of the congo really starts in 150 AD. The indigenous immigrants to the Congo,
who were most likely Pygmies, had migrated from the northern area to the savannah regions in the
south now called DROC, or Democratic Republic of the Congo (Clarke, John H). These immigrants
brought agriculture, and made iron tools. Moving ahead to 1482, the Portuguese navigator, Diogo
CГЈo visited the Congo River marking the first ever known European contact with the region.
Henry Stanley, a British explorer is commanded to proclaim King Leopold s rule over the Congo
in 1879. This is followed by European powers at the Berlin Conference who recognised Leopold s
claim to the Congo basin and he announces the establishment of the Congo Free State headed by
himself (Democratic Republic of...), thus beginning Leopold s era of tyranny. Leopold s purpose
of controlling the Congo was for the vast amount of resources such as ivory, rubber, and copper.
In 1887, J.B. Dunlop s invention of inflatable, rubber, bicycle tires and the rapid increase in the
popularity of the automobile, caused the demand for rubber to increase dramatically. Now sensing
an opportunity, Leopold issued three decrees in 1881 and 1882 collectively saying that

This can be seen in his use of wording for each side. When describing the sea, Crane uses strong
images, which can be seen in the text: As the boat bounced from the top of each wave, the wind

The men found the seagulls gruesome and ominous because they were not bothered by the waves,
and they seemed to inspect the efforts of the men. This can be seen in the book, The birds sat
comfortably in groups, and they were envied by some in the dinghy, for the wrath of the sea was
no more to them than it was to a covey of prairie chickens a thousand miles inland. Often they came
very close and stared at the men with black bead like eyes. At these times they were uncanny and
sinister in their unblinking, and the men hooted angrily at them, telling them to be gone.

The USA Patriot Act (FISA)
In the entire span of the United States history, the commitment of the protection of Americans
civil liberties have frequently been tested and strained. The biggest breach of national security
was on September 11, 2001 which ended in the compromise of the trust of American people
because they had felt lied to and vulnerable all because of a broken pact and a failure to protect
America with an agency founded to prevent such a catastrophe. After these acts of terror Congress
felt they needed to do better and step up their game, they decided it was time to act so just one vote
short of unanimous bipartisan support, they passed the USA Patriot Act. The measure gave law

Although the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) already permitted the
administration to wiretap on an emergency basis and apply for warrants retroactively, the
administration maintained that FISA was too cumbersome when urgent issues of national security
were at stake. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales offered two justifications for the legality of the
domestic spying program, asserting that the president had the inherent authority under the
Constitution, as commander in chief, to engage in this kind of activity and that Congress, when it
authorize[d] the president to use all necessary and appropriate force against al Qaeda in 2001,
indirectly sanctioned it. Critics objected that the wiretapping infringed on civil liberties,
sidestepped the legislative branch, and placed the president above the law. In August 2006, a
federal judge in Detroit ruled the wiretapping program unconstitutional. However, in July 2008,
Congress passed a bill overhauling the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act effectively legalizing
Bush s secret program. The new law gave legal immunity to the telephone companies that
participated in the NSA secret wiretapping program after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and
broadened the government s ability to eavesdrop on those in the U.S. and abroad it suspects are

  • 2. The Utilitarian Theory Of Punishment In this paper I will defend both the proponents and principles of the utilitarian theory of punishment, namely addressing the utilitarian approach juxtaposed with the retributive. Before beginning to make claims in any direction, a brief and to date synopsis of the utilitarian fundamentals regarding punishmentwill be necessary. From there, I will present the utilitarian theories of punishment as not only the most useful for a society, but also the best representation of criminal law being carried out justly. Following this assertion I will refute objections made by retributivists, and in doing so present a discovered common ground between the retributory criteria for just punishment and the utilitarian theories. This will not serve to say I believe in impure retributivism over the utilitarian theories, but rather will act as testament to the practicality of the utilitarian approach. Finally, I will propose the most ethical response to criminality is found from the utilitarian fundamentals of societal well being, mentioning specifically the vindictive theories of punishment as meeting the utilitarian criteria. To the utilitarian, punishment is not an end in itself for the actions of a wrongdoer. Utilitarians and I believe punishment should serve as a larger means to an end that will benefit the future while righting the criminal actions of the past by employing deterrence, rehabilitation, and the disablement of the unjust human in the perpetual attempt to increase overall ... • 3. Can The Light Of A Glow Stick Be Affected By The... Melita A. Hoods Bringing Light December 12, 2014 Abstract: This experiment was conducted to determine if the light of a glow stick can be affected by the temperature of water. In this the researcher will try to find what temperature of water makes a glow stick glow brighter and how long it will stay lit. By proceeding in the experiment, the data collected proved the hypothesis to be correct. Warmer water caused the glow stick to glow brighter than it had before. On the other hand, the beaker with colder water made the stick stay lit longer and the room temperature water didn t affect the glow stick as much. Glow sticks are popular products that are used for fun and entertainment. Everyone knows what they are. But we really don t know what they are. Glow sticks are plastic tubes with a glass vial inside. When ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the temperature changes so does the results. The blue stick, hot water, stayed lit for 112 minutes (an hour and fifty two minutes). The green stick, which was room temperature water, stayed lit for 96 minutes (an hour and thirty six minutes). And lastly, the pink stick, in cold water, stayed lit the longest for 122 minutes (two hours and two minutes). The experiment could have had better results if done with multiple glow sticks. Make sure that the thermometer is correct in the measurement of the water s temperature. It is important that you get your data correct. Conclusion In the experiment, it was discovered that glow sticks will show more light and glow brighter in water with higher temperatures than lower or room temperature. The experiment proved that the hypothesis was correct in saying that warmer temperatures would make a glow stick glow brighter. Though the hot water made the glow stick brighter and dim faster, the cold water caused the stick to glow longer, and the room temperature water didn t affect the green glow stick in any significant ... By this time Glass had crawled out of his shallow grave and reached the nearest river where he had a run in with the Ree. He floated down stream for a ways and banked himself to build a camp for the night. Above him in a field there were a large group of buffalos running from a pack of coyotes. One of the Buffalo got killed by the coyote. If a conversion ratio, rather than a conversion price, is specified, the effective price of stock to the bondholder may be determined by dividing the par value of the bond by the number of shares exchangeable for one bond. The conversion price, which is determined when the bonds are 30%, is usually from 10 to 20 percent above the prevailing market price of the common stock at the time of issue. Both the issuing form and the investor expect that the market price of the stock will rise above the conversion price, and that the conversion privilege will then be exercised by most or all bondholders. The indenture typically includes a call provision so that the issuing firm can force bondholders to convert. Therefore, it is evident that firms issuing convertible debt (1) Page 5 often truly want to raise equity capital. The reasons that they choose convertible debt are discussed below. 3. Therefore, bond buyers are willing to accept a low stated interest rate on such bonds, to pay a premium and accept a lower yield, or to accept less restrictive covenants. • 7. Opposing Forces Civil Rights Movement Opposing forces When looking back on the Sixties, one of the most dominating themes of that period was the Civil Rights Movement. The quest for civil rights had been started long ago, when the black man was freed from the bonds of slavery. Over a hundred years later, the problem of blacks being treated as second class citizens still persisted. What could be done to correct the present situation? Some, both blacks and whites, believed that non violence was the only means to achieve civil rights, as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. preached. Others like Huey Newton of the Black Panthers believed that violence was the only way. (W. H. Chafe: The Unfinished Journey, Oxford University Press. 1999, p.316.) Kaufman, Stokely Carmichael, Rights Leader Who Coined Black Power http://www.interchange.org/Kwameture/nytimes 111698.html). Principally, Carmichael s approach called for a considerable revamping of the present structure within America. More fundamentally, change had to begin within the black communities themselves. Blacks need to assert their own influence and control over their neighborhoods, school districts, etc. They need to be active participants in government, because any federal program conceived with black people in mind is doomed if blacks do not control it. Obviously, blacks knew what was happening in their communities. They knew what the problems were and what issues needed to be addressed. Without direct involvement of black people in the decision making process, the black man s problems could and would not be completely solved. The militancy evident in Black Power emanates from the strong, unwavering quest to redefine black culture and make change, or, as Carmichael phrased it, take care of business . . . by whatever means necessary. The fact that the black man would no longer put up with white racist attacks was quintessential. Carmichael proclaimed, Black people should and must fight back . . . White people must be made to understand that they must stop messing with black people, or the blacks will fight back! All too often, lynchings, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. How Did Cicero Influence The Economy Born in 106 BC, Marcus Cicero was arguably a great Roman orator, lawyer, statesman, and philosopher who had an extensive impact on the Political development at that time. However, he supported different groups and individuals at different time, which limited his influence due to the apparent changes in political allegiances to pursue what he felt was best for the republic. The significance within Cicero career initially lies within his early career through the several legal cases he undertook in his attempt to restore the republic to its encrypted and truest form leading him to move along the Cursus Honorum. Additionally, his role in the legal case against Verres gained him favourable reputation among the people, allowing him to strengthen... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As both praetor and governor, Verres was engaged in corruption, and in desperation the Sicilian people appealed to Cicero to prosecute Verres who had taken advantage of the economy. Cicero first speech in the Verress case was the Divinato in Q Caecilium, which he spent 3 months collecting the evidence resulting in Verress to flee due to the mass of evidence that was obtained. His success lies within his Verrine Oration as it established Cicero as Rome s foremost orator amongst the Roman courts. However, as suggested by Widemann, Cicero had some personal motives, as he would be curule aedile he used this advantage to gain the support of the Sicilian people, which gave him credibility to go forward and become consul. In winning the case, Cicero was seen to play a high profile role in disclosing the corruption and mismanagement that was rusting from the senatorial appointments to the provinces (Scullard, 1999). As a result, Cicero was able to use the influence of his successful legal career to gain support to stand for the consulship of 63 BC and played a very significant role in combating the individuals he saw as a threat to the ... • 9. Body Dissatisfaction And Eating Disorders Body image involves awareness of the form, shape, and size of one s body (Cash, 2012). This includes both a perceptual awareness of one s appearance and an attitude toward one s appearance (Cash, 2012). Body dissatisfaction involves the attitudinal portion of body image, which refers to the extent to which a person is displeased with his or her body (Cash, 2012). Body dissatisfaction contributes to the development of eating disorders because when people are dissatisfied with their appearance, they are more willing to engage in self destructive behaviors in order to lose weight (Skemp Arlt, 2006). The relationship between body dissatisfaction and eating disorders is important because the majority of American women admit that they are unsatisfied with their own body shape or weight and thus are more likely to develop an eating disorder (Streigel Moore Smolak, 1996). Personality is composed of many traits that together predispose a person to certain emotions, behaviors, and cognitions (Cash, 2012). Just as a person s physical appearance is unique to him or her, personality is also unique to each individual. Although personalities can change and develop over time, they are seen as a combination of long term traits that remain relatively stable across the lifespan (Cash, 2012). Personality traits are influential to almost all aspects of daily life, including the way that people perceive their bodies (Tylka Subich, 2004). Although several personality traits are likely ... • 10. Economic Significance Of Renewable Energy Policy ECONOMIC SIGNIFICANCE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY POLICY IN INDIA: A CASE STUDY OF GUJARAT S SOLAR POLICY I.Introduction The transition to a greener energy regime in India is driven by both external factors, like energy prices, market developments, political culture and the emphasis on climate change, as well as by internal factors like the goal to achieve long term energy security and the need for enhancing access to energy. The early emphasis on renewable energyin India was primarily on the wake of energy security concerns mooted during the global oil crisis around 1970s. Commission of Additional Sources of Energy (CASE) in 1981 was set up by Government of India (GoI) as one of the early response to such a crisis. CASE was transformed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is argued that policy reforms initiated during the past two decades have transformed India s energy sector from a predominantly government owned system to a system largely driven by market elements. This is also evident in the case of renewable energy where the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) identifies the development of renewable energy in India across various phases: 1970s as research phase, 1980s as demonstration phase and 1990s onwards as commercialization phase with greater participation of private sector entities. The renewable sources of power in India still constitute a small portion of the entire power production of the country, with the total installed capacity of 32,000 MW (which is about 12% of the total installed capacity). Out of the total installed capacity, solar energy constitutes about 10 % (3200 MW). The solar potential of the country is huge. It is estimated that about 12.5 % of India s landmass, which is about 413,000 square kilometers, can be exploited to harness solar energy. The country on an average enjoys 300 sunny days with an average hourly solar radiation of about 200 MW/square kilometer. • 11. The Pit And The Raven Analysis One way Poe demonstrates suspense in these works is through the use of an unreliable narrator. In both of these pieces, the main character is a mysterious and untrustworthy narrator. In The Raven, the narrator starts by saying, ONCE upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, / While I nodded, nearly napping (1, 3). The narratorhas just awoken to the sound of knocking at his door. While it is up for debate, the narrator could very well be dreaming or hallucinating about the ravenand the tapping, but the reader and even the narrator are waiting for a signal to explicitly show that it is just a figment of his imagination. In the other story, The Pit and the Pendulum, the narrator is introduced to us as criminal who has been sentenced to death. The narrator describes the moment saying, The sentence the dread sentence of death was the last of distinct accentuation which reached my ears [before swooning] (263). The reader discovers at the beginning of the story that the narrator has committed a crime so terrible that he has been sentenced to death. The audience spends the whole story trying to figure out when he will die and by which type of torment he will die to. In both of Poe s works the narrators are unreliable characters who the reader cannot completely trust, which leads to the suspense of waiting for the whole truth. Another literary element Poe uses in these stories to build suspense is a mysterious tone. In The Raven, the narrator ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Early stages of 3D 3D has been around for a long time, the earliest confirmed 3D film called The Power of Love (Directed by Nat G. Deverich, Harry K. The room temperature solution was next with an average of 13.5 minutes. Finally, the warm temperature glowed for the shortest amount of time with an average of 9.5 minutes. I noticed that the solubility affected the glow rate. The warm water was able to quickly dissolve the copper sulfate, Luminol, and Perborate mixture. However, the cold water took the longest because it was hard for it to dissolve. In order to keep the dissolving process going, every so often, I mixed it. My results indicate that if you want to locate the presence of blood quickly, you should use a warmer solution. However, if you want a longer glow, a colder solution may be a better choice. In the poem The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost the traveler is faced with a decision about which road to take. In the literal sense the poem is about a person taking a walk through the woods; however, metaphorically it explores a person s journey in life. Our decisions, especially important ones, have a great effect on our future. Making difficult choices can take you down a different pathway to success. After narrowing down my options, I applied to volunteer at the Crystal Lake Public Library this past summer. Having to go in for an interview was a new experience for me, considering how I have never applied for a job. I believe that the exposure to the interview process did two things for me: first, it put me out of my comfort zone, and second, it taught me invaluable lessons about applying for future jobs and programs. This is because I am the kind of person who can get nervous easily, and I struggle to hide it sometimes. An interview is a type of situation that I would feel nervous in; however, I was able to overcome my fear and apply to the library anyways. Once I was accepted to the library s volunteer network, I was able to choose which department I would work for in order to serve the community. By volunteering at the library, I improved the Youth Services department, particularly by participating in the Adopt a Shelf program. One part of my job was to rearrange the books in the correct order when they got disorganized. This made it easier for parents and children to find the books, movies, and CDs they were looking for. Another task that I enjoyed was replacing the books to their proper location from the clean up cart. Jane Austen s Pride And Prejudice Anjan Amarnath Mr. Holaday British Literature/Writing P6 9 May 2016 Clever Title While Jane Austen s novel Pride and Prejudice is often regarded for it s strong representations of feminism, the novel strongly portrays the Oedipus complex through the Bentley sisters unexpected and contradictory relationships. The relationship of a child with their parent is one of the strongest influences in one s later life and relations, so much so that a child is sometimes forced to repress their true desires. The novel tracks Elizabeth Bennet s relationship with Mr. Darcy, a relationship which endures a stark, unexpected change that is a result of Elizabeth s Oedipal complex. Initially, Elizabeth detests Mr. Darcy, as she views him and a narcissistic man with unreasonably high expectations; however, near the end of the novel, she becomes infatuated with him and the two end up getting married. Mr. Bennet, Elizabeth s father, is a very soft spoken man who deliberately defies his wife, his female counterpart, and doesn t seem to openly express his love for his family very often. That is, with the exception of Elizabeth who happens to be his favorite daughter, as demonstrated throughout the book through his distinct affection and care towards her and his indifference towards his other four daughters. Throughout time, we have used art pieces such as stories, mythology, paintings and movies as a way of conflict, to get a point across, or to tell a story. A big theme presented over time has been the ideologies of women and their role. Through time, we are able to see the way in which the roles of a female has been continuously constructed and reconstructed over and over again. These characteristics are even present in the story of Adam and Eve. In fact, characteristics drawn from biblical contexts seem to be very prominent. It is through these images of a woman that first create these gender stereotypes. As we go on, it will be seen that different pieces of work allow maintaining and further reinforcing the stereotype of the femme fatale. The story of Adam and Eve is perhaps the first example of a femme fatale. Eve the first woman on earth, created from a man s rib as a gift to Adam from god. Eve sought the Tree of Knowledge and as the story goes, bit into the apple in the Garden of Eden, letting all evil into the world. Eve brought about the fall of mankind and introduced things such as sin and death. She was tempted by the serpent and further, tempts Adam with her beauty and sexuality to bite the apple thus being the classic example of a femme fatale. Another popular example is taken from Jewish tradition. The very popular Lilith is also associated with the first version of creation. Estimated at 1025 1594 BCB Lilith was Adams first wife. God is said to have created Lilith from clay, not from a mans rib, thus being equal to man. The story goes as Lilith shows up as a naked lady to seduce husbands who otherwise are reasonable husbands. Lilith s name is associated with being related to a dark deity, ex goddess, ancient demon, and even a vampire throughout time. One thing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Economic Impacts of American Fast Food upon Developing Countries Amanda Lee Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts Introduction Developments leading up to the 21st century are best characterized by the economic advancements found in countries all over the world. Regardless of the level of these advancements in a country, achieving higher living standards, financial stability, and overall growth of the economy are the perpetual goals for a country. Because every country is unique in terms of their economic, political, and social standings, different methods in order to obtain these goals are to be considered. However, the basic principles for achieving these goals seem to follow the trends of globalization: investment, technological improvements, secure institutions, and a market economy. Countries that benefit the most from globalization are found to be of high growth. The integration of a global economy in a country has prompted entrepreneurs to regard the world as one market in the form of franchising. With that being said, economic success can measure the effects of Western commercial globalization from the results of American fast food franchise. • 36. Analysis Of George Orwell s A Hanging Under the pen name of George Orwell, Eric Arthur Blair writes an essay titled, A Hanging, to show how capital punishment is wrong. This essay is a past experience Orwell has been across. Orwell changes his view on capital punishment, who has the right to shorten someone s life. Orwell witnesses a hangingof a Hindu man and realizes that it is inhumane and immoral to take a life away from someone. Although Orwell has helped with hangings in his past he realizes that capital punishmentis wrong and it is not right to take someone s life away. During the time of the writing of this essay Orwell was living in Burma as a police officer in a local jail to oversee and help with executions. He witnessed many deaths and hangings in his duty as a policeman. Orwell did not like Burma (Biography.com Editors, p.2) and his witnessing of these hangings and mistreatments is where the motivation, to stop the process of executions, for his writing came from. Right from the beginning of the essay, Orwell sets the mood by describing the scene as a sodden morning of the rains (Orwell, p.1). The rain is used to set a sad mood for the essay because of the events that are about to occur. The schedule for the day is to execute, hang, a prisoner after his appeal was denied by the court. It is not a happy day for anyone, not the guards, not the prisoner, or his fellow inmates. The government assumes a regulatory stance in light of environmental goals, anticipating an amount of fishing activity, which is acceptable. The combination of the government and the industry should theoretically result in an equilibrium between the companies and the regulatory sector. While Macbeth ultimately succumbs to his unchecked ambition and rashly murders any potential and unlikely threat to the throne, Hamlet procrastinates and fails to fulfill his revenge in a timely, simplistic manner. Because of his uncontrolled ambition, Macbeth blindly trusts the witches who promise inviolable royalty, murders his closest friend, and kills the family of his nemesis. (Kreitner Kinicki, 2013) Like Youth Villages, Netflix shares a mix of characteristics from each of the four cultures of the competing values framework. Netflix was started in 1997 by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph with the idea of providing online movie rentals. By 1998, Netflix provided unlimited DVD Rentals through a monthly subscription. Today, Netflix provides online streaming services through multiple game consoles, televisions, and computer devices. They now have 93 million customers world wide. The common theme in the seven aspects of Netflix s culture is that of an Adhocracy Culture. ( About Netflix, n.d.) Adhocracy cultures, as defined by Kreitner and Kinicki, foster the creation of innovative products and services by being adaptable, creative, and fast to respond to changes in the marketplace (2013, p. 70). Netflix maintains two values that identify their adhocracy culture and could help improve the organizational culture at Youth Villages. Before discussing their values, Netflix points out that anyone can establish espoused values and put them up in their lobby. They reference the espoused values of Enron versus the actions and behaviors that ultimately brought their demise as an example. Netflix states that their values are in fact enacted values, the values and norms that are exhibited by employees (Kinicki Kreitner, 2013, p. 65). • 50. Congo’s Era of Damnation In the year 1885, King Leopold II of Belgium imperialized the Independent State of the Congo. Leopold set the area up under his own personal rule. His rule was an extremely negative and very unwanted thing that plunged the area into an era of damnation. The early history of the congo really starts in 150 AD. The indigenous immigrants to the Congo, who were most likely Pygmies, had migrated from the northern area to the savannah regions in the south now called DROC, or Democratic Republic of the Congo (Clarke, John H). These immigrants brought agriculture, and made iron tools. Moving ahead to 1482, the Portuguese navigator, Diogo CГЈo visited the Congo River marking the first ever known European contact with the region. Henry Stanley, a British explorer is commanded to proclaim King Leopold s rule over the Congo in 1879. This is followed by European powers at the Berlin Conference who recognised Leopold s claim to the Congo basin and he announces the establishment of the Congo Free State headed by himself (Democratic Republic of...), thus beginning Leopold s era of tyranny. Leopold s purpose of controlling the Congo was for the vast amount of resources such as ivory, rubber, and copper. In 1887, J.B. Dunlop s invention of inflatable, rubber, bicycle tires and the rapid increase in the popularity of the automobile, caused the demand for rubber to increase dramatically. Now sensing an opportunity, Leopold issued three decrees in 1881 and 1882 collectively saying that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This can be seen in his use of wording for each side. When describing the sea, Crane uses strong images, which can be seen in the text: As the boat bounced from the top of each wave, the wind tore through the hair of the hatless men, and as the craft plopped her stern down again the spray slashed past them (Crane 2). When describing the land, adjectives are used to differently to depict safety and serenity: Slowly and beautifully the land loomed out of the sea (Crane 5) 8.What caused the men to come to the conclusion that the seagulls are grewsome and ominous ? Is this a true perception? (And did you notice the creative spelling here?) The men found the seagulls gruesome and ominous because they were not bothered by the waves, and they seemed to inspect the efforts of the men. This can be seen in the book, The birds sat comfortably in groups, and they were envied by some in the dinghy, for the wrath of the sea was no more to them than it was to a covey of prairie chickens a thousand miles inland. Often they came very close and stared at the men with black bead like eyes. At these times they were uncanny and sinister in their unblinking, and the men hooted angrily at them, telling them to be gone. 9.Write a brief description of each character. • 53. The USA Patriot Act (FISA) In the entire span of the United States history, the commitment of the protection of Americans civil liberties have frequently been tested and strained. The biggest breach of national security was on September 11, 2001 which ended in the compromise of the trust of American people because they had felt lied to and vulnerable all because of a broken pact and a failure to protect America with an agency founded to prevent such a catastrophe. After these acts of terror Congress felt they needed to do better and step up their game, they decided it was time to act so just one vote short of unanimous bipartisan support, they passed the USA Patriot Act. The measure gave law enforcement officials sweeping new powers to conduct searches without warrants,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) already permitted the administration to wiretap on an emergency basis and apply for warrants retroactively, the administration maintained that FISA was too cumbersome when urgent issues of national security were at stake. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales offered two justifications for the legality of the domestic spying program, asserting that the president had the inherent authority under the Constitution, as commander in chief, to engage in this kind of activity and that Congress, when it authorize[d] the president to use all necessary and appropriate force against al Qaeda in 2001, indirectly sanctioned it. Critics objected that the wiretapping infringed on civil liberties, sidestepped the legislative branch, and placed the president above the law. In August 2006, a federal judge in Detroit ruled the wiretapping program unconstitutional. However, in July 2008, Congress passed a bill overhauling the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act effectively legalizing Bush s secret program. The new law gave legal immunity to the telephone companies that participated in the NSA secret wiretapping program after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and broadened the government s ability to eavesdrop on those in the U.S. and abroad it suspects are linked to terrorist ...
