didn t think much about it. At some of my old churches I was in sort of leadership

The client, Julie*, called into the Crisis Center Hotline looking for immediate
shelter for herself and her two young children. At that time, our shelter was not full
and therefore had space for the mother and her children. I went through the
procedural routine of making sure that she was not in the center s blue books, a
record of clients not allowed to receive shelter and/or services, and seeing if she had
an alpha card already completed, this would mean that she was a previous client at
the shelterand already had a file. Julie* did was not found in either source. At that
point, I began to complete the shelter intake paperwork with her over the phone.
The first two pages of the intake are completed first with the client. These pages
find out more about the client s demographics, her current physical and mental
health state, how many children she has and if she could be pregnant at the time,
her abuser s demographics, and the presenting primary abuse occurring. I
completed these two pages with Julie* and then from that point an approval staff
member will tell you if you can complete the rest of the intake or tell the client that
at the time we cannot offer them services. Julie* was approved to complete the rest
of the intake paperwork. The majority of the rest of the intake paperwork is a more
detailed explanation of the first two pages. These pages help the approval staff and I

In the lawsuit Guatemalans vs Johns Hopkins University over 800 Guatemalans
were deliberately infected with sexually transmitted diseases and then treated with
penicillin in an experiment to see if this antibiotic would work in treating these
diseases. Researchers from John Hopkins School of Medicine infected kids in an
orphanage, prisoners and mental health patients without their knowledge with
syphilis and gonorrhea. These experiments happened from 1945 to 1656 but were
not discovered until 2010. In the article it talked about how the experiment was kept
a secret and did not publish any findings on whether the penicillin worked or not,
probably because it was unsuccessful. It also talked about how the Guatemalans that
were infected and then no follow up treatment was offered nor information on what
diseases they were infected with. Majority of the victims of these experiments went
on living their lives with no idea what the institution had done to them. They lived
with the effects of these diseases and passed these things on to sexual partners and
to their children. Although about 1,500 people were infected during the experiment
several have passed away. In the article, it goes on to talk about a little girl who
lived in an orphanage and at nine years old, she was called to the infirmary where
several doctors including one Guatemalan doctor waited for her, she was infected
with syphilis. The Guatemalans lived their lives without knowing the truth.
