Ishmael Beah has been through just about everything a soldier in can experience
while in war, and he wants to show how war is not a good solution. If we do not take
what he says into account, loved ones may be taken from us and have to experience
what he once did as a soldier. Or worse, our loved ones could be killed by one of the
many destructions caused by war. The blood shed on the battlefields of warcould be
our own if people don t listen to what Beah is trying to tell about war. Beah uses the
image of blood throughout this book to show why war is not a good answer. He
could have lessened the image of blood if he wanted his take on war to be
portrayed differently. Blood was chosen as the image because the main purpose of
war is to prevent future blood shed from occurring, but it really just creates more
casualties and more blood shed. By looking at the way Beah portrays the image of
blood in A Long Way Gone , one can see that his view on war is not a positive one,

under the global spotlight when it became the epicenter of the newest conflict
between Russia and the West. This conflict is only the most recent development in

switched hands numerous times throughout history. The area has been under the rule

Association Student Leadership Conference. Early Friday morning, I hopped in the
van with the meats judging team and graduate students as we headed to Olathe,
Kansas. Our first stop was in Kansas City, Kansas at Bichelmeyer Meats.
Bichelmeyer Meats, a family owned operation, provides meat to consumers in the
area. This processing facility decides to harvest and fabricate in two separate
buildings to help control contamination during the process. They make sausages,

My Reflection Of My Nursing Experience In The ED
This Friday, September 15th, I had my clinical observation experience in the ED. I
was there from 7:00 am till noon, viewing the flow and duties of the nursing staff on
the unit, as well as practicing the skills I have thus learned in school. Throughout
most of the morning, I followed Jessica, who had been a nursein the ER for ten years.
It was an insightful experience that broadened my previously limited knowledge of
the roles and experience of an emergency nurse.
Several of the roles which I observed this morning were expected: the nurses took
vitals for incoming patients, performed focused assessments, and were the main
communicators between family, the patient, and the physician. I realized when the
first patient came in around 10:00 am, the RN s role in assessments, gathering blood
work, and carrying out all the necessary steps to situate and stabilize the patient as
soon as possible. It was incredible seeing the nurses work together, in sync, in those
first moments when the patient was brought in. And though expected, I appreciated
seeing just how much communication was held and information was gathered from
the patient or family members by the nurse. Jessica asked the right questions from
both parties, while still showing incredible empathy and not making the whole
situation seem rushed and flustering. I understood this as another essential role of the
nurse in the ED; he or she must maintain even in such a fast paced environment
empathy and focus in each interaction.
When I spoke with Jessica I inquired more about the training and certifications
required to work as an ER nurse and foster such skills. She informed me of the
necessity of having ACLS and BLS certification, as well as of the VA s specific
trauma nurse courses. All members on the ED are also required to have a PMDB
certification (Prevention and Management of Disruptive Behavior). She added that a
majority of the nursing staff are certified as emergency nurses.
I learned from Jessica and the other staff about their interpersonal techniques to
manage the stress found in the ED. They each mentioned facilitating debriefing and
chats with each other when especially chaotic or stressful occasions arise. I learned

deceptions, which I thought are most interesting. The first is having pride in humility.

from the truth. When studying authors or philosophers the patient Wormwood
encourages him to ask about the authors background, why he wrote it, or how he

Zimring contemplates the irony of permitting young citizens to vote on whether or
not they should be allowed to drink. However, regardless of their ability, this small
minority is always overwhelmed by the rest of the population who decide that they
are, in fact, not old enough or mature enough to consume alcohol (Zimring, 1982).

A lot of people might have heard about the filipinos or the Philippines. Some
people don t even know where is Philippines located. Filipino people are known as
settlers in many parts of the world(Williams). Filipino culture is unique compared to
other Asian countries, and beliefs apply every day in the life of the Filipinos and
reveal how rich and blessed the culture the people have(Abundo). The country is
ranked number 1 for celebrating christmasthe longest. Filipinos put up christmas
decorations and plays christmas song as early as the month of september. The
Philippines had been colonized before by the spanish and the americans. Some
people calls the Philippines the melting pot of asia due to the diverse flavors in
their cuisine. Next is that Filipinos are one of the most hospitable people you may
find anywhere (Abundo). Filipinos are friendly even to strangers that they just
meet. Philippines traditions have a great effect on people s outlook of the country.

east of Vietnam and northeast of Malaysia. Philippines does not share any borders.

Rite of Passage Ceremony
RITE OF PASSAGE
It is three days before my initiation ceremony. The day Mama says I become a
woman. She is really happy about it and I m supposed to be, but I m not. I have tried
to delay this day for as long as possible, but this year Papa put his foot down. I am
already 17 years old and most girls go through the ceremony at 14. All the girls in my
age group have to go through this rite in order to make them eligible for marriage.
No woman in the village can get married without undergoing the rite of passage. It
is part of our tradition and the elders believe it ensures women do not stray from
their marital homes. They also believe you are unclean without it. People were
already starting to whisper about me as I was the last girl in my age group who not
gone through it and my friends tease and look down on me that I am not yet a woman.
My younger brother, Dide cannot be initiated into the Warrior class because he has
an older sister who is uncircumcised. This is the real reason Papa has refused to
listen to me any longer. Dide has come of age and he doesn t want me to delay his
initiation. After my initiation ceremony, I would be getting married. Papa has
already someone picked out. I ve seen him a couple of times, my friends think I m
lucky to be getting married into his family. I don t think anything. Going through the
