The Differences Of Cruel And Unusual Punishment
Cruel and Unusual Punishment
If you had the choice would you rather die from being crushed by an elephant or by what the
persians called Scaphism ? You could have rats dig through your flesh into your chest or be boiled
alive (Eldridge 2017). It all sounds pretty tempting am I right? The eighth amendment to the U.S.
Constitution prohibits the federal government from imposing cruel and unusual punishment for
federal crimes. What is cruel and unusual punishment? What are the differences between old
medieval, Roman, Egyptian and, nowadays cruel and unusual punishments? To understand the topic
of my paper we have to understand what cruel and unusual punishment means. Dictionary.com
states that it is punishment prohibited by the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution. Cruel and
unusual punishment includes torture, deliberately degrading punishment, or punishment that is too
severe for the crime committed. This concept helps guarantee due process even to convicted
criminals. Many people have argued that capital punishment should be considered cruel and unusual
punishment (Dictionary.com 2017).
Cruel; disposed to inflict pain or suffering, devoid of humane feelings, causing or conducive to
injury, grief, or pain. Unusual; not usual : uncommon, rare. Punishment; suffering, pain, or loss that
serves as retribution: a penalty inflicted on an offender through judicial procedure (Merriam
Webster 2017).
In medieval times there was a cruel execution method that started in old time

Knowledge Increases Sorrow
Muhammad Ali Fawad Dr. Aamna Khalid Writing and Communication (SS 100) 17 March 2013
He That Increases Knowledge Increases Sorrow Philosophers have struggled with answering the
question of the meaning of life since the time of Plato. In attempts to answer this question they,
have deconstructed this idea and have, in the process, isolated the components of what makes life
meaningful. Among the many components one is the drive to seek wisdom and knowledge in
order to avoid suffering caused by ignorance and finding happiness. (Gyatso, The Meaning of Life:
Buddhist Perspectives on Cause and Effect, 78). There are many discrepancies present as to what
constitutes knowledge. Presently the terms knowledge and information have become... Show more

They have come to conclusion that the only way to be happy is to stay away from depressing
and troubling matters, which to some degree is true, but this does not justify being ignorant about
all that happens in the world. The problem with this ideology hits the very basic of human
instincts, the desire to know. ...we can t deny our thought, or our memories. To deny our thought
is to deny our dignity. Our dignity follows the direction of our thought. (Blaise Pascal). People
who hold the sentiment of ignorance being bliss do not contribute to the evolution of society; they
are consumers, not producers. Society has a wide variety of flaws, such as rape culture, gender
inequality, racism, intolerance, extremism, etc. However, having knowledge about these only adds
to one s awareness and it is because of this awareness that the individual can work towards
reducing and henceforth eradicating these flaws from society. Unaware individuals are simply cogs
in the machine, who, because of their unawareness have no desire to change the world around them.
Even if they do, they find themselves flabbergasted when they try to think of a solution. Pessimism
never got anyone anywhere. Unfortunately being aware of these issues also includes knowing
about the terrifying stories of people who have been wronged. We can agree to the fact that rape is
prevalent in society and that it is difficult to talk about without feeling uncomfortable. The

Chem B Experiment Lab Report
The purpose of this lab was to experimentally and scientifically ascertain the percentage of oxygen
in Chem B at Woonsocket High School. It was hypothesized that if the percentage of oxygen is
measured experimentally in Chem B at Woonsocket High School, then it would be higher than the
percentage of oxygenin dry air, which is 20.95%, because the air is not dry due to moisture in the
air from people breathing and the altitude of where the experiment takes place may affect it as well.
To conduct this experiment, a candle was placed upright in a pan of water, was lit, and the flame
was allowed to fully develop. Then a graduated cylinder was placed upside down to represent an
airtight chamber, and the water rose. The point where it rose to was ... Show more content on

The number of people in the room, contributing to the humidity, is one of the contributing factors
to the change in percentages of oxygen. The condensation of a person s exhaled breath is a factor
that also minimally contributes to the humidity in the atmosphere. Humidity is the amount of
water vapor in the air at any given moment. When a person exhales, it marginally impacts the
relative humidity, and, due to common sense, if there is more people in the room, there is a
greater level of humidity. The percentage of oxygen in dry air is 20.95%. However, the air is not
always dry. Thus, the percentage of oxygen cannot always be the same if humidity is always
changing. Furthermore, dew point temperature is the absolute measure of the amount of water
vapor present in the air. So, if the temperature is higher, it can hold more water vapor, making
warmer climates much more humid than cooler climates. So, the temperature in the room is also
an indirect contributing factor to the percentage of oxygen in the air. The distance above sea level
is thought to potentially affect the percentages of oxygen. Nonetheless, it has been established that
the percentage of oxygen molecules is always the same when considering altitude. This is because
air is compressible, so the weight of all the air above applies pressure to the air at that particular
altitude, making that air at

Finding A Mentor For This Project Essay
Entry 1: Finding a mentor for this project was not too difficult. Despite finding a mentor,
scheduling with my mentor was actually the hardest part. The funny thing about this, is fact that
my mentor is my father. I see him everyday and scheduling is still difficult. I can only imagine
how tough it is for others doing this project. To find, associate and make plans with people they
don t even know. Well anyway I want to be a PoliceOfficer. Many of the stories my father had told
me and continues to tell me is very interesting. His experiences inspired me to become one myself.
I was told stories about many different criminals from someone J walkingto being involved in a
homicide. This job seems like the least boring job( depending where you work) someone can be
apart of.
Entry 2: On Saturday Novemeber 4th I had just got home from the gym. I walk in my house
grabbed a towel and headed straight for the shower. It was ride along day with my father. Dressed
and ready to go. We get in the car and headed to my mentor s field. On the way I was so excited to
see what it s like to be a police officer. Soon, arrived at the Los Angeles Police Department.I never
wold ve thouh I d be on a ride along with my father. My ride along experience with my mentor
ended up being the longest and most intense day of my life. I say it was long because I was with
him from 9pm to 5;32am. That s 8 hours. Before the trip I was introduced to many of the officers
my mentor works with at the department.

Australian Laws
AUSTRALIAN LAWS Intellectual Property
What is intellectual property?
Intellectual property is any creation, owned by one or multiple owners, that is used commercially.
The designs, inventions or any work that is original can be protected by IP rights. Rights are
established through application and prevent any use without permission. The only way to use this
work, when not owned, would be to buy the rights. While rights are owned there is an opportunity
to make advancements with limited opposition. This is due to the competition not being able to act
since the idea is not theirs.
What are your rights and how can you protect your intellectual property? Explore the various forms
of protection for intellectual property including: patents, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The 4th to 9th cycle costs $300 $350. The 15th to 19th cycle costs between $2300 $2350
depending on the payment method (electronic or other). The protection period is then up after 20
years and would need to be renewed.
A standard application for a trademark costs $120 per type (tv show etv). A trademarked series costs
$270 per type. Registering fees are $300 which is the same cost of a renewal.
Applying for rights over a design can cost $250 $350 and renewed for $320 $370. Examination fees
cost $420 if done by the design owner and $210 if examined by a third party.
If fees are late the price can increase by $100 per month for an average of up to six months.
What are the constraints or issues surrounding protecting a design?
Different forms of intellectual property protection have certain limitations on the time period
they are in effect. The duration a patented design lasts is for 10 years. Fees are paid to make sure
this protection remains. A registered design prevents third parties from utilizing the product for
up to 25 years if it is renewed each five year period. Proof must be given that a person has created
a design. These could be copies or photographic evidence of the design. The aspects of a design
that are forbidden for use by others are the appearance, shape, arrangement and decoration. There
are some criteria the design must meet in order for it to be protected. It must be new, not offensive,
not contain already protected designs and is not

How Irving Creates A Portrait Of Sneed As More And More Pig
In the memoir Trying to save Piggy Sneed, John Irving recounts how his grandmother s kindness
towards a retarded garbage collector, Sneed, inspired him to become a writer. One of the key
aspects of the memoir is how Irving creates a portrait of Sneed as more and more pig like. The
effect of this portrait is to make readers believe, by the end of the memoir, that Sneed is a pig. Irving
starts the memoir with the statement that all memoirs are partially made up, and as such, Trying
to save Piggy Sneed, too, has false components. He uses his imagination throughout the memoir
to supplement his memory and to alter facts about Sneed, so as to create a false and cruel
picture of him. My aim is to analyze how Irving uses his imagination to characterize Sneed and
answer why does he, even as an adult, insist on being abusive to this innocent man? In paragraph
8, Irving emphasizes that Sneed lived with his pigs, imagining that his pigs would crowd around
him for warmth. He associates Sneed s smell and look with his pig like qualities. But, although
Sneed smelled and looked awful, this alone is not conclusive. Sneed was poor and retarded and
couldn t talk, so the only thing he could do for a living was collect garbage and keep some pigs,
work in which it is not easy to maintain hygiene. Because his barn was small, Sneed had to
remain close to his pigs, which was the reason he looked and smelled awful, rather than a
willingness to live like a pig, as Irving describes.

My Decision Of Hiking Towards Camp
I was already miles down the trail before I began to second guess my decision of hiking towards
camp. It had been years since I had done something challenging and wanted to prove to the men,
that were waiting for my arrival, of my strength. The weather had grown colder and the snow
continued to fall with every step I took. Several times I had licked my lips, forgetting the low
temperature, and would instantly feel the saliva hardening into ice. Prior to the hike, a man
offered a hospitality ride from the nearest hotel due to the upcoming weather drop and lack of
phone connections along the path. I was told I would not be able to reach any type help, which I
felt was an insult to my masculinity, for another nine miles and by then I would... Show more

Without thinking about how I should be careful also because that could very well happen to me,
I felt the ice beneath me crack and my feet, unable to move, becoming engulfed in the piercing
water. Irritated and quickly noticing the frigidness of my body, I decided it was time to take a
break, start a fire, and enjoy it s warmth. I placed my boots and my bare feet near the fire in an
attempt to dry them.
The first fire was a success, so I thought to myself, This one will be no different. I was wrong. The
first time, the fire was put out by snow falling from a branch above him. The second time, the
fire was almost a success but was ruined by the loss of feelings in my hand as I tried to build its
flame. Now discourage, I begin to focus on my unfortunate luck and lack of company. Of course,
the dog was a nice companion, but deep down I felt uneasy about its intentions. Is it simply lonely?
Was it out looking for food when it stumbled across me? Wait. That thought gave me an idea

if I killed the dog for a source of food but more so for the warm its body held? Other countries eat
dogs. It wouldn t be a completely morbid act to commit. I pondered on this thought, growing
restless and uneasy at my body and its ability to withstand the cold. At the beginning of the trip, I
thought nothing of the dangers enduring the harsh weather would entail, but seeing the effects it
had on my body I knew that if I did not reach camp in the next hour the results

Oskar Schindler Comparison
Oskar Schindler was as you would call it, the protagonist of the film. He was the man looking to
make a fortune off the German invasion in Poland, he could be considered as callous or greedy.
As you are introduced to Schindler you see him picking out each part of his outfit. The suit, tie,
shoes and pants. Right down to the pin and how much money was in his pocket. This came off
to me as being a narcasist, or pompass. Schindler began as a womanizing and immoral man who
only cared about his personal gain. He was not faithful to his wife and had many mistresses. His
wife Emilie did not live with him for most of their marriage because of it,and when she walked in

Goeth finds a sanctioned outlet for his cruelty in the Nazi military and is representative of the
mindless evil of the Third Reich and its final solution. He views Jews as vermin, creatures
unworthy of possessing basic human rights. He kills often and without hesitation or provocation.
Unlike Schindler, Goeth never strays into goodness. However, the lack of change in his basic
nature does not render him a one dimensional character; Goeth is a complicated and conflicted
man, as well. He lusts after his Jewish maid, Helen Hirsch, and actor Ralph Fiennes skillfully
conveys both the strength and ambivalence of this passion. Goeth attempts to seduce Helen, and
when she shows no reaction, he turns on her, blames her for trying to tempt him, calls her names,
and beats her savagely. Later, when Schindler wants to buy Helen to put her on his list, Goeth
refuses. He tells Schindler he will never let her go, that he wants to bring her back to Vienna and
grow old with her. Schindler tells him it can never be, and Goeth, exhibiting his conflicting feelings,
replies that he would never subject Helen to Auschwitz, but would shoot her in the head, mercifully,
instead. Goeth s twisted idea of a merciful end for Helen epitomizes both his inner conflict and

Describe and Assess the Evidence That Socialisation Plays...
Socialisation refers to the process of learning one s culture and how to live within it. The process
of socialisation involves the transmission of culture from one generation to the next. It is during
socialisation that individuals learn the values and norms that play such an important part in
shaping human behaviour. Socialisation provides the skills and habits necessary for acting and
participating within one s society. Charles Cooley divided socialisation into two stages primary
and secondary socialisation. Primary socialisation is the early years of our socialisation. It occurs
when a child learns the attitudes, values and actions appropriate to individuals as members of a
particular culture. The most important agency of primary... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Anna was born to an unmarried woman, a fact that enraged the woman s father. At first
forbidden to bring the child into the house, Anna s mother attempted to place her in a children s

Finally, at the age of six months, the child was returned to her mother. Because of the
grandfather s hostility, Anna was confined to an attic room where she was given only a
minimum of care. She was undernourished and emaciated and received almost no human
contact. She was not spoken to, held, bathed, or loved. Anna was finally discovered by a social
worker in 1938. At six years of age, Anna was little more than a skeleton. She could not walk,
talk, or feed herself. Her face was expressionless, and she showed no interest in other people.
Over time, though, Anna made some progress. She learned to walk, feed herself, and brush her
teeth. She could also talk in phrases and follow simple directions. However, Anna died at the age
of 10, probably as a result of her earlier isolation. The story of Isabelle has a somewhat happier
ending. Isabelle, whose mother was also unmarried, was found at about the same time as Anna. The
child s grandfather kept her and her deaf mother confined to a dark room. Although deprived of a
normal cultural environment, Isabelle have the advantage of her mother s company. But

Pill Bug Lab Report
Food Preferences in the Sow Bug (Porcellio Laevis)
Purpose
The purpose of this experiment is to determine what kind of food the sow bug prefers; decaying
leaves, potatoes, grapes, or sow bug food.
Hypothesis
If a sow bug is placed in a choice tray, and has access to decaying leaves, potatoes, grapes, and
sow bug food, the sow bug will choose the decaying leaves over its other options. This
hypothesis was based on research stating that a sow bug s main food source is decaying
vegetation. This is the food they are accustomed to and therefore will select over the other three
options which they rarely if ever would have access to.
Materials
Twelve sow bugs
Bisected grapes
Chunks of potato
Decaying leaves
Pinch of sow bug food ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This information would suggest that the sow bugs were not especially interested in food at the time
the experiment took place.
The data gathered might not have been conclusive in discovering the preferred food source of
sow bugs, but it at least showed that the decaying leaves were what they were attracted to for
whatever reason. This information could be used in a variety of different ways. It would be
helpful in pest control as well as in keeping a sow bug alive. For people who consider sow bugs a
nuisance, the data could reduce the population of sow bugs in certain areas by removing the
decaying leaves. This would make the habitat less inviting and therefore discourage the presence of
sow bugs.
When relating the information to a wider variety of topics, even though the information was not
conclusive, it came to attention that the preference of habitat or food source in sow bugs has a
major effect on the areas in which they live and on the organisms survival. Whether it is because
of food and/or environmental related issues the fact that the sow bugs preferred to reside in and
/or eat the decaying leaves shows that areas with significant quantities of decaying leaves have a
chance of being affected by sow bugs. Because decaying matter is a main food source for sow
bugs it could be assumed that if sow bugs resided in an area containing decaying leaves, they would
also be ingesting them. This would have an impact on that environment. When the sow bugs eat the

A Summary On The Film The Night
Over the colossal castle, the spherical star above leaned cautiously. The noose eclipsed the sunlight;
relentless guards grabbed their attention of every creature which had clinking chains glued to their
soiled feet. Led by enslaving chains; the mist blew through the ashen compound. As dejected
hostages babbled helplessly, faint whimpers deafened the abominable scene. Masking beats of
drums pursued every hesitant shuffle.
Anxiously, the morose hostages scuffled onwards; they limped in desperation onto the wooden
deck. The inmates blistered, wounded soles struggled. Wrapping it around the peasant s bony neck,
scraping away at the remaining skin, the ruffian beast grabbed the noose. Mercilessly, he grasped

would be pale, dreary corpses which are discarded.
A clammed breeze lifted the cinders from the gallows, shrouding the atmosphere in a copper haze.
The silver coin reflected with its qualities of molten riches; weathered by its eternal existence, it
sat in the diminutive palm of his hand. The relic glistened in the sun. With apprehensive energy,
his eyes coruscated as a celestial voice broke out of him; the ruthless executioner yanked the
defenceless child onto the wooden barrel, putting a noose around head as it swallowed it whole. As
he sang, he reflected on his mortal life; knowing it would vanish briskly. The adolescence, timid
boy s soul poured past the rotten, blanched ground which flawed into the emotions of the aghast
crowd. Just then, death was roused. Dubiously, the vigorous executioner marched behind him,
wondering what raised his feeble audacity.
Surrounding him, there was an aura of ashen charcoal; a state of abasement that he couldn t see
himself through. It was a world of obscurity; the glossy glint he had revealed. His melancholy,
colourless eyes spoke of his depraved anguish.

Ethics, Deontological, And Virtue
From the moment we are born, our parents make sure to teach us the right from wrong. As we
grow older we begin having our own thoughts and learning the ethical and unethical things of life.
In today s society, we are all expected to be more open minded and respecting of others way of life
and culture. That s what being a Global Citizen is about. Through Global Ethicswe have learned so
far, that we can all relate to three important moral theories. These theories are known as
Consequentialist (Utilitarian), Deontological, and Virtue. Through this paper I will also be
discussing a case study found in chapter two, based on the Selling of Human BodyParts, and how it

In other words, a deontological person thinks more about themselves and their duty. An example
also given is class similar to the previous one. Is that if a manager is told to fire an employee due
to insufficient funds, the manager would complete the task without even thinking about because
of his/her duty to the company. They don t really think about the consequences that this causes
the employees personal life. Lastly, we have Virtue. A virtues person attempts to discern
character traits (virtues and vices) that are or could be motivating the people involved in a
situation (Contrast between the three Ethical frameworks, Moskwa,). In other words, a virtues
person not only watches for themselves, but they also watch out for others who need help who
are within their same virtue. For example, if a friend is going through a hard time, a virtues
person would be there for them and watch out for their best interest. Consequentialism,
Deontological, and Virtue all help shape our moral values. As we go along on the book we focus
on chapter two s case study based on the sale of body parts. Through the lenses of
cosmopolitanism, we see that a cosmopolitan may have different views when it comes to the
selling of body parts compared to non cosmopolitan. A non cosmopolitan would agree with the

performs fair trade, it was discovered that Starbucks buy their coffee beans from bigger
plantations and the middle man, who buys coffee beans from small time farmers usually
scamming them (216). This creation of image of Starbucks being a good corporate business in
helping the small time farmers earn more income is contracted by Simon s findings, and shows
that the coffee company is actually taking advantage of the small time farmers, when Starbucks
buys from the middle man or the big plantation owners, it pay less for the coffee beans than they do
if Starbucks purchases beans from small time farmers. The greed of Starbucks at the expense of the
individual farmers is unethical, yet the coffee shop company markets the contradiction.

George Herbert Mead And Symbolic Interactionism
George Herbert Mead, an early social constructionist, formed symbolic interactionism. Mead
believed that our thoughts, self concept, and the wider community we live in are created through
communication. Symbolic interactionism is what separates humans from the rest of the other
animals. Mead was a philosophy professor at the University of Chicago, Mead thought the true
test of any theory is whether it is useful in solving complex social problems. If it doesn t work in
practice, forget it. Mead taught philosophy but was well known by sociologists as the professor
who trained a generation of the best minds in their field. Mead never put his ideas in a book before
he died so his students pulled together class notes and conversations and published... Show more

Blumers third premise is that these meanings are handled in, and modified through, an
interpretative process used by the person in dealing with the things encounters. Integrationist s
describe thinking as an inner conversation. Mead called this inner dialogue minding. Minding is the
two second delay while we mentally rehearse our next move, anticipate others reactions. We
naturally talk to ourselves in order to sort out the meaning of a difficult situation. Mead believed
that animals act instinctively and without deliberation. Integrationist s believe that humans require
social stimulation and exposure to abstract symbol systems to embark upon conceptual thought
processes that characterize our species. Without the symbolic interaction that learning a language
requires, we wouldn t be able to think though our responses, we d only react. Symbolic
interaction, whether verbal or nonverbal, activates our cognitive ability for inner dialogue that,
once switched on, won t shut down.( Em Griffin/Andrew Ledbetter/Glenn Sparks pg.57) For
example as kids we play roles, whether it s like our parents or someone imaginary. As an adult we
still put ourselves in the place of others and act as they would act. Mead was convinced that
thinking is the mental conversation we hold with others, always with an eye toward how they
might see us and react to what we might do.
The symbolic interactionism approach is interpretive; the linguistic work of assigning meaning or
value to communicative texts, believes that multiple truths are possible. ( Em Griffin/Andrew
Ledbetter/Glenn Sparks pg.15) The tradition is socio cultural tradition, it s based on the premise
that as people talk, they produce and reproduce culture. ( Em Griffin/Andrew Ledbetter/Glenn

The Instinctual Behaviors Of Horses
Instinctual behaviors that horses acquire are their social structure, reproduction, mothering, feeding
and communication. For their social structure they have a complex structure. Horses are not
territorial animals, they usually graze close to other herds and there is little to no aggression
showed. Having the dominant leader of the groups is defined by the horse who has preferential
access to resources through aggressive threats or actions. As for reproduction the mare, or female
horse will urinate showing her vulva that then attracts the stallion, or male horse. If they become
satisfied with each other copulation will occur many times over a period of time. The mare carries
the foal for 9 months. As the skin to skin contact like humans to... Show more content on

Horses are very intelligent animals they are fast learners with correct and consistent training.
They are able to figure out their own problems and work them out. Horses make associations
with things that happen. So if something bad occurs during a specific event that is what the
horse is going to remember. But if a reward is given the horse will think whatever bad thing
happened in that event is usual and the treat will take their mind off of it. When a horse has
learned habituation the response to a stimulus has decreased. This happens when the horse is
confronting the same stimulus multiple times and soon has gotten used to it and the response to
it being there has decreased. When the horse has learned association this is called conditioning.
The horse realizes that this meant that . The horse makes associations and connections with
commands and cues. The first licks from a mare to a foal horse are what is called imprinting.
The licking from the mare stimulates a bond between the two horses. But there is also an
imprinting done by humans. Humans can give a good or bad imprint on the foal which can later
affect them growing up. If they are given a good imprint they are more likely to do the things that
humans need them to do later in life. For example the horse will accept being saddled, rode with
little to no resistance, and having muzzle clipped and ears handled. But a bad

Essay On Burmese Pythons
Burmese Pythons: Bad for the Everglades
Have you ever seen a snake that can grow up to 23 feet long and weigh up to 200 pounds? If you
have, then you have seen a Burmese python. These pythons can grow to be the width of a sycamore
tree branch. They are native to Southeast Asia, but due to bad ownership, they are now roaming the
Everglades, unbalancing the ecosystem. The Burmese Pythons are negatively affecting the
Everglades by disrupting the food chain, causing an unsafe sport, and they are growing
exponentially.

Undocumented Immigrants Should Be Legal
America is a nation of immigration but America also faces the problem of illegal immigration. In
America the debate of whether undocumented immigrants should be able to get full amnesty is still
a controversy. Even though illegal immigrants did make an illicit action, many see the United States
as an opportunity for a better future. In addition, undocumented immigrants should be granted
citizenship because it will benefit the United States. Creating an amnesty for the students will help
the United States by improving the economy, create more jobs and decrease deportation.
Granting citizenship to illegal immigrants will benefit the United States in the economy.
Legalizing immigrants will help them earn more money than they already do. This means that
immigrants will pay more taxes and consume more. When people start consuming more goods
there is a higher demand, necessitating more jobs. Authorizing immigrants will allow them to
pay federal taxes and state tax. Many immigrants already pay taxes only 30 to 50 percent of
immigrants don t report taxes. According to the Center for American Progress, immigrants don t
report taxes, because they fear to get discovered and deported (Lynch, 2013). Passing the reform
will increase tax profit to $116 billion in federal and $68 billion in state and local taxes (Lynch,
2013). Increasing tax profit will benefit citizenship because taxes will decrease on each individual.

Benefits And Benefits Of Temporal Flexibility
Temporal flexibility has been widely applied to firms and more flexible for the advantages or
benefits of both organisations and employees. In terms of benefits that temporal flexibility brings,
this essay focuses on flexible working practices which are mutually beneficial to the employer and
the employee (Brinkley 2013). Nevertheless, as a part of temporal flexibility, flexible working
arrangements are put in an awkward position. It is unjustified to describe them as an improvement
for the benefits of the companies as there is an increasing amount of people who are willing to take
those arrangements. Undeniable, there must be some benefits which are attractive to the employee.
Zero hour contract, which is a new development to temporal flexibility, is controversial for being
considered restricted to organisations benefits.
Basing on introducing varied types of temporal flexibility, this essay mainly discusses how is
working time flexibility mutually beneficial to the employer and the employee. However, the
existence of temporal flexibility cannot only in good side, downsides are analysed to manifest
temporal flexibility thoroughly. The essay is divided into three parts. The first part introduces
mutual benefits on flexible work practices, the second part introduces mutual benefits on flexible
work arrangements, and the last part introduces mutual benefits and conflicts.

The Invisible Mother And Lennie Analysis
The Invisible Mother and Lennie
When a person thinks of a true motherly bond they most likely think of warmth, happiness,
someone safe, and reliable. In of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, Lennie has to live a life
without his mother and because of that it affects the rest of his life . Not having access to the
sacred feeling of a mother s love can alter anyone s life. That is why Lennie realizes he needs
something to fill that hole in his heart with something that at least resembles a mother s love. If
that bond is taken away then a person is left bare to the elements of the cold harsh world. There is
something about soft creatures that gives Lennie a sense of serenity and inner peace. The inner
peace he gets is the reason why Lennie from Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, loves mice,
puppies, rabbits, and anything soft because it represents a true motherly love he never had. Mice
in the novel has a deeper symbolic meaning than just it being a petite pet. What Lennie loves
about mice is their reliability and stability. These soft natured mice are so easy to find for Lennie.
Mice also have a motherly quality that Lennie never had. A true mother is known for always being
there no matter what. In the beginning of the book Lennie and George are walking towards their
new job, Lennie is holding a mouse but George catches him, George says You gonna give me that
mouse or do i have to sock you? ... Lennie reluctantly reached in his pocket. I don t know why I
can t keep it. It ain t nobody s mouse. I didn t steal it. I found it lyin right beside the road (9). As
long as Lennie is looking for mice then the mice are alway there for Lennie. The only thing
stopping him most of the time is George. That is why Lennie needs to sneak around to get what
he loves. Even though he loves the mice he is a danger to them. In a way when Lennie is with
the mice he feels like he has mother again but when a mouse bites him he goes back to reality and
kills it. When he kills the mice he feels remorse and then makes the desperate search to find
something to replace it. It s important because Lennie never had an accepting person s shoulder to
cry on. Even though Lennie has a mental handicap the need for reliability is evident.

The Fall Of The Roman Republic
Tiberius and his brother Gaius were regarded in Roman tradition as the initiators of the revolution
which led to the breakdown of the Republic. (Roebuck, 1966:506) The fall of the Roman Republic
occurred during the late second century BC and resulted in various leading figures emerging such
as Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus. Tiberius Gracchus was largely responsible for creating and
initiating a long term political crisis in Rome in the early first century through his land reformations
and desire to aid the poor. However, his intentions led not only to political arguments but violence
within Roman society. This will be demonstrated through the analysis of ancient sources, discussion
of the historical context, Tiberius Gracchus motives, actions and contribution to the fall of the
Roman Republic. Much has been written about Tiberius in both modern and ancient sources,
although some are divided on his motives while others strive for his selflessness. Orosius, an
ancient source concerning the Roman Republic stated that Tiberius was angry with the nobility
because of the Numantine Treaty, decided that the land possessed hither to by private individuals,
should be divided amongst the people, and this caused him to reform against the Senate (Bishop,
1988). There are a trio of vital ancient sources reliable on the breakdown of the Republic. Cicero,

Persuasive Essay On Global Citizenship
In today s world, it is very important for every person to demonstrate exceptional citizenship as it
proves beneficial to the development of the world. In the video documentary, The Cove, Ric O
Barry and his team of activists are protesting the dolphin slaughter occurring in Taiji, Japan.
Their goal is to reduce the number of dolphins killed each year and hopefully stop the slaughter
entirely. Mr. Barry and his team, are model global citizens as they abide by the law, are
extremely informed about the cause they are protesting, and display purposeful and active citizens
greatly through their work. Therefore, Ric O Barry and his team of activists are remarkable
examples of global citizens based off of the four characteristics describing a good global citizen.
Ric O Barry and his team demonstrate excellent global citizenship through their care and concern
for the endangered dolphins in Japan, even if they do not necessarily abide the law. Firstly, the
only situations in which Mr. Barry and/or the activists feel the need to break the law is when they
are trying to help the dolphins, and the law is unfortunately restricting them. In the video
documentary, The Cove, Ric O Barry is arrested multiple times for trying to free captive dolphins
in Florida and on the Island of Bimini. He shows good civic behavior here because he genuinely
cares for animals and the well being of the environment, thus providing credible reasoning for
breaking the cruel laws that allow companies to keep animals in captivity. Furthermore, Ric O Barry
and his team of activists are law abiding citizens because they ensure that they do not hurt anyone in
the process of protesting and they continuously cooperate with the police and other government
officials. For example, when Mandy Rae Cruickshank and Kirk Krack visit the cove for the first
time, they try to keep the encounter with the Japanese fisherman peaceful even though the
fishermen are butting chests with them. Another example would be the numerous times Taiji
officials interrogate Mr. Barry about the actions he takes against the reoccurring dolphin slaughter,
and how he always complies with them, respectfully answering all their questions. This proves that
Ric and his team are

Comparing Cinderella And Cinderella
Traditionally fairytales have morals for their audiences. Throughout time, these stories develop
themes and ideas that allow readers to discover their purpose. These versions let the audience
envision the story from a newer perspective. Modified versions reveal the underlying cause of the
storyline and its characters. It is clear that The Little Glass Slipper published by Charles Perraultin
1697 and Cinderellapublished by Brothers Grimmin 1812, display the overall modification of the
main idea. Within both tales these themes can be represented through the change in time, the
overall plot and character development. The newer purpose of modified stories is demonstrated
in Cinderella . The fairytale originated from the story, The Little Glass Slipper, which was
written by Charles Perrault. The original tale was reformed through the Brothers Grimm version,
otherwise known as Cinderella . When analyzing the tales, the reader notices that each story has
its own moral, ending and plot. Both the 1697 and the 1812 versions results in a new ending .The
original tale concludes with kindness overruling beauty. The second version concludes with the
stepsisters being punished for their actions. The moral of Perrault s version describes Cinderella s
kindness to overrule the cruelness of society. The newer versions such as the Brothers Grimm tale
display a differing moral, which is that an individual s misbehavior will be punished. These endings

Murders In The Rue Morgue
In The Murders in the Rue Morgue a story about solving a murder case, Edgar Allan Poe presents
a critique on strict logical analysis in life. Dupin struggles with accepting the logic of the police
that are trying to solve the murder, which is represented by Dupin s special reasoning power and
how Dupin knew what to do when the police could not find an answer to the murders (Poe 2 4).
With the changing of acts from Parts 1 2 to Part 3 Poe goes from vividly descriptive language on
ingenuity to a vicious critique on pure analytical thinking, Poe dismisses the common view at the
time that everything can, and should, be explained through analytical reasoning. The echoes of war

The second paragraph on the second page seems to say that Poe, like many other romantic
inspired writers at the time, sees that the power of unusual reasoning and analytical reasoning to

reasoning ability from special to unusual, signifying an uncanny ability that Dupin has that the
unnamed narrator has never experienced before(Poe 2). But at the end of the paragraph Poe
shows the harshness of Dupin s gift. Though Poe continues to use visual imagery such as, His

would just as coldly took them apart, which shows Poe s conflict with how much ingenuity should

Patriotism And Patriotism In Shakespeare s Julius Caesar
Patriotism In Julius Caesar
Shakespeare s play, be that as it may, is more about legislative issues than it is about antiquated
legends, about the legislative issues of Rome as the chose government offered approach to tyranny.
It s a tale about patriotism and defilement, about connivances and partnerships. It s a tale about
administration and the complexity amongst opportunity and oppression.
As I read up on Julius Caesar before observing it, I found an assortment of sentiments on what the
play is about (not too sudden, really, since it is a play by Shakespeare). A few pundits take a
gander at the play as an announcement about the perils of an outright ruler they take a gander at the
play s execution in Elizabethan and Jacobean England as the most huge thing about it. Others focus
in transit the general population the swarm of Romans is depicted, and how their flightiness
impacts occasions.
This play seems to have no saint in the exemplary sense, on the grounds that the activity rotates
around a few primary characters: Julius Caesar, Marcus Brutus, Caius Cassius, Mark Antony,
Octavius Caesar. On the off chance that you give careful consideration to the dialect and activity,
however, a hero emerges Brutus a heartbreaking saint who is fixed by his energetic resistance to

New Labour Youth Justice Case Study
New Labour youth justice policy and practice over the past decades have been deep rooted in an
ideological framework. That incorporates criminological theoretical both neo liberal approaches in

Companies Act 1993 section 84 requires every company to have at least one shareholder and at
least one share . A common liability to shareholders is that they have an obligation to pay the
amount that is being owed in his or her shares if the company goes into liquidation. This liability is
for the shareholder of the current and the prior shareholder. In Section 96 of the Companies Act
1993 it states that a shareholder is a person s name who is entered in the company s share
register as being the holder at that time of one or more shares in the company and section 51
states that shares are considered issued once the holders name if entered in to the share register.
Tryrion Holdings Ltd v Claydon states in order to be a shareholder, the holder needs to be
registered into the share register. In this case Tyrion is not listed in the shareholder as there was
no share register known and any direct evidence of a share register existing. Neich v Roseka Ltd

The War on Gun Control Essay
Gun Control War We are no stranger to gun control debate and controversy here in the U.S. We
hear of gun deaths, mass and school shootings on the news on a daily basis. Is it safe to say that
the U.S. needs permanent gun control laws to protect its citizens or would it be in violation the
constitution? The second amendment was written by our founding fathers back in 1791 in a day
where it was common for any citizen to own a weapon. Many times we tend to misinterpret our
rights as well as we do with guncontrol laws. As George Washington once said A free people
ought not only to be armed, but disciplined . Have we shown ourselves to be disciplined enough to
have the right to bear arms or have we not, which would explain the massive... Show more content

This made it easier to control the distribution of guns in the U.S. For many U.S. citizens Gun
Control laws and regulations is a violation to their inalienable rights. It has been fought in court
various times and both sides make valid points. One of the most popular cases id The District Of
Columbia vs. Heller in this case The District of Columbia Did not allow the use of handguns and
would not allow anyone to carry a gun without a license. They brought in different people to
testify and state their purposes, most of which were of self defense This once again put under
the same question of it being unconstitutional. If you think to yourself would you want a person
walking around in the streets with a gun at all? Would a person walking around with a gun on
the street with the proper license make a difference? It only takes one person to ask this question
and raise others. This has been happening recently over the years here in the U.S. dealing with it
court cases and debates over this topic. In the case of the Trayvon Martin Shooting a young man
of the age of 17 was shot and killed by George Zimmerman. George Zimmerman was a leader of
his neighborhood watch and was licensed to carry a handgun. George Zimmerman claimed to have
been attacked and shot in self defense. How was any of this to be believed when there was only

Religious Tolerance In New England
Political tension and a religious crisis presented a need for a re establishing of a society in New
England where religious tolerance could sustain order and harmony in the colonies. This wasn t
exactly a foolproof plan as they thought it out to be, because of the recurring oppression they had
seen in Europe. Puritans were a sect of christianity, one that James I was seeking to purge out of
Europe during the reformation, that followed the almost brutal ideals of John Calvin. There was
two branches: Presbyterian and Congregationalist. They believed in predestination, deplored the
hierarchy of the Church, and allowed pleasures some would find odd for a religious group. The
pilgrims (also called separatists) later became a different, and even

CARDIFF BUSINESS SCHOOL| PURCHASING POWER PARITY AND THE LAW OF ONE
PRICE |
Against all odds
Despite being severely criticised for more than three decades the Purchasing Power Parity and its
building block the Law of One Price still play vital role in economics
Introduction
Would you believe in the law of gravity if quite often objects that should stay firmly on the ground
were instead flowing weightlessly in the air even though they were not supposed to? Probably not.
However, if physicians were economists they would simply attribute it to a marginal error in their
calculations and still accept it as a valid law. Among the considerable amount of examples the

On the other hand, the relative PPP holds that PPP is not particularly helpful in determining what
the spot rate is today, but that the relative change in prices between two countries over a period of
time determines the change in the exchange rate over that period. More specifically, if the spot
exchange rate between two countries starts in equilibrium, any change in the differential rate of
inflation between them tends to be offset over the long run by an equal but opposite change in the
spot exchange rate.
The commonly agreed statement is that the absolute PPP is less (if at all) useful than the relative
one. Salvatore (2001) argues that the absolute PPP theory cannot be taken too seriously /...
/ whenever the PPP theory is used, it is usually used in its relative formulation . Rogoff (1996)
points out that the biggest problem for not using absolute PPP is the lack of data to conduct viable
tests. With very few exceptions there are no indices for internationally standardised basket of goods.
The absolute version of the PPP theory has in its roots

American Conquest Feelings Analysis
American Conquest Feelings Essay It is not often that you read a story where the American
soldier is the bad guy. Miller does a great job of portraying the conflict for what it truly was. He
does not give an anti American tone while writing the book, like many other critics have. I think
that we have a lot to learn from this conflict. America is the greatest country, with the greatest
beacon of life and liberty than any other country in history. With that being said, we must not turn
our head from the atrocities that Uncle Sam takes responsibility for. Studying the tainted corners of
our history provides us with the ability to learn from experience. After reading this piece of the
book, I think America is not a fraud. I don t think

Capitalism In Death Of A Salesman
The American Death: An Analysis of Death of a Salesman
After World War II, The U.S. entered into a time known as the Golden Age of Capitalism. A major
ideology that developed during this time was the American Dream. According to Merriam Webster,
the American Dream is a happy way of living... that can be achieved by anyone... by working hard
and becoming successful. Arthur Miller s play Death of a Salesman critiques this ideology through
the outcome of Willy s life and in light of Karl Marx s ideas in Alienation.
One way Miller critiques the American Dream is through Marx s idea of proprietors and
propertyless. Marx states in Alienated Labor that the whole society is divided into two classes
of proprietors and propertyless (171). Throughout the story, the audience learns Willy is part of
the propertyless. This is demonstrated when Willy and Linda have a conversation about the
refrigerator. Linda mentions how they are close to paying it off, but Willy replies that it just
broke again (73). In light of Marx, since Willy is not able to own his refrigerator, he is part of the
propertyless. On the other hand, Howard, Willy s boss, is a proprietor. The way Howard achieves
this job is through inheritance. At one point in the story, Willy asks Howard if he can... Show more

This dream is dangerous because it causes a loss of one s identity and endless work towards an
unreachable goal. If people continue to believe this dream is possible, then the proprietor will
continue to exploit them. In the end, all the worker has to show for their work is their death. When
they die, this process will just continue with another worker. The workers may believe that they are
assets to the company, but in reality, they replaceable. While the American Dream may seem like a
fantasy, it is ultimately an endless cycle of the exploitation that can never be

Dealing with Stress
There are many challenges that we face and have to handle every single day. And, as women, we
frequently have to balance the demands of work, family, children, parents, finances, and health
to name just a few. These demands are frequently referred to as stressors and achieving a balance
is stressful. But multiple demands on our time and energy are a part of everyone s life. Stress is
not how many demands you have in your life, but rather how you and your body respond to these
demands. For some, racing to meet a tight deadline or complete a long ToDo list can be positive
and energizing. It s important to learn what stress is, at what point it becomes harmful, and options
for how you can respond to it. Finding the right balance is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Essay On Nikola Tesla
Nikola Tesla, noted inventor, engineer, machinist, and electrical pioneer was born in 1846 in
what is now modern Croatia. His parents had five children which included siblings Dane,
Angelina, Milka and Marica, in the family. His mother, Djuka Mandic, who invented small
household appliances in her spare time while her son was growing up, spurred Tesla s interest in
electrical invention. Tesla s father, Milutin Tesla, was a Serbian orthodox priest and a writer, and
he pushed for his son to join the priesthood. Very little else is recorded regarding his early
childhood or primary education. It is rumored, though, that the young Tesla was alternately cheerful
and upbeat, or sullen and solitary. A general theme in his life, though,... Show more content on

While both men went on to continue developing sensational inventions, Edison is the man most
credited in history books for his work. Tesla, on the other hand, was not an inventor seeking fame,
but one who simply had a peculiar and uncanny view on the world. He was known to have
outbursts of creative genius that led to days of non stop work, eventually resulting in his
register(ing) over 700 patents worldwide. His most well known work revolved around the
Alternating Current electrical theories. While this stood in direct opposition to the corporately
backed efforts of Edison to promote a Direct Current network for electrical distribution, Tesla
continued with the idea of transmitting electricity through the air, and free to all people. Edison
scoffed at the idea, but even the newest research in the 21st century reveals that Tesla s notions are
quite feasible. In the end, it is clear that his early education at home, his formal education on record,
and his work with Edison all contributed to the foundation of Nikola Teslas broad range of work.
The public perception of Tesla was quite positive during his productive years, even earning the
financial backing of J. Pierpont Morgan for a while . Tesla s disputes with Edison grew over the
years, though, eventually leading Tesla to abandon much of his work later in life, and he
eventually died penniless in 1943 while residing in a New York hotel. By all accounts, he was

Promote the Wellbeing and Resilience of Children and Young People
1.1 explain the factors that influence the wellbeing of children and young people There are many
factors that influence the wellbeing of children and young people. Some of these are evident in
Maslow s Hierarchy of Needs.
A child should have the ability to have secure and nurturing attachments that offer emotional
warmth and security from a care giver. This will offer security and safety to the youngperson. As
well as secure attachments, the young person will benefit from having positive relationships with

Young people should have positive relationships with primary care givers, education staff and
peers as this leads to higher levels of self worth, high self esteem and a positive self image. This
positive outlook on life may lead to that person becoming more approachable and popular
individual. Structure, routine and boundaries should be put in place and positive reinforcement is
to be used, this allows an understanding of the young person s position within their society and
leads to a more settled and well balanced individual. Positive and dependable role models allow
the young person to model the behaviours of well balanced, well behaved and already resilient
individuals. Positive encouragement offered to young people may lead to higher levels of self
esteem and enables the young person to develop an optimistic attitude about learning new skills and

Common Magic Bronwen Wallace Summary
A Whole New World: An Examination of Metaphysics in Bronwen Wallace s Common Magic In
Common Magic, Bronwen Wallace presents the philosophy of metaphysics, proposing the
presence of a separate world within reality; a mental realm that resides within every person. Every
person is engrossed in their own world while living their everyday lives simultaneously, leading to
the author to describe reality as lifeless and dull. At the same time, the poet struggles to understand
how people still have the ability to participate in a functional society. In the poem, Wallace
illustrates that people are able to interact with each other while being consumed by their own inner
world through the use of diction, figurative language, and imagery. The... Show more content on

The poet shifts focus from the lovestruck and the waitress and onto the population as a whole.
While on a bus, an old man is singing to a child. His voice is personified as a small boy / turning
somersaults (20 21). This leads the readers to believe he is reminiscing about his childhood,
particularly doing somersaults in his native land, the green / country of his blood (22). He is
awakened from his dreamy inner world and is transported into a puzzle / of brick and tiny
hedges (24 25), which symbolizes the bleak reality. This also contrasts the tranquility between
his inner world and his reality. The fourth stanza augments to this idea using the word seasons,
alluding to the different worlds everyone subconsciously lives in with varying characteristics.
The old women in the city are described to have their faces / clawed by weather you can t feel

pain like they can because everyone is living in their own inner world. However, the adolescents
around them are different and do not live in separate worlds. The hormonal, temperamental
teenagers live under the same scope, atmospheres of anger (34). Wallace describes everyone s
inner worlds to be distinct from each other, but this causes people to become

Applications Of Photonic Circuits
2.1 Introduction
There have been extensive research in field the integrated photonics and industry in recent years.
There photonic circuits are advantageous as compared to conventional electronic circuits in a vast
range of applications.. Therefore, so much research have been done on photonic devices, such as
HCGs and photonic crystal based hollow waveguides, Bragg reflectors and their integrations with
electronic devices.
2.2 Literature Review
High index contrast gratings have been a very appealing choice over conventional DBRs in terms
of high reflection, size etc, also unlike DBRs, they provide phase and polarization control of light.
The huge mismatch between the electronic and photonic devices blocks the realization of high ...

So in order to increase the delay of the structure ,the input waveguide is extended with sharp bend
waveguide and the output waveguide with a smooth bend waveguide. The modified D flip flop
structure has been operated with a delay of more than two fold of the basic structure by having
nearly the same CR at the output. The simulation results as well as compact design of the proposed
structure make it suitable to be a part of photonic integrated circuit.
Takeo Katayama et al. 2016 [42] have done research on the optical coupling between a polarization
independent high index contrast grating (HCG) and two orthogonal in plane waveguides. They
have fabricated HCG with waveguides on a SOI (silicon on insulator) substrate. The proposed
waveguide coupled HCG can be used into a polarization bi stable vertical cavity surface emitting
laser (VCSEL), which would switch the output waveguide by changing the lasing polarization of
the VCSEL. It has been demonstrated that we can switch a waveguide with a strong output by
changing the polarization of light injected into the HCG. The light is more strongly coupled to the
waveguide in the direction perpendicular to the polarization of the incident light than to that in the
parallel direction.
Eungtaek Kim et al. 2016 [43] have suggested functional passivation layers in the form of a
distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) which is composed of ZnS and LiF for transparent thin film

What Are The Pros And Cons Of The Cost Of Education
With the issue of Cost, there are pro and con arguments. There is little available data on the exact
costs of educating children with disabilities or gifted, talented etc. But let s look at what we
know. We know from the National Center for Education Statistics the total expenditures for
public elementary and secondary school in the United States amounted to $621 billion in 2011
12. This breaks down to a cost of approximately $11,014 per student. (Brault, 2011) According to
a review of over 100 research studies, McGregor Vogelsberg (1998) concluded that while start up
costs may initially increase the costs of inclusive services, the costs over time decrease, and are
likely to be less than any segregated forms. Furthermore, in the American... Show more content on

Forced to discuss the effectiveness of Inclusion like some return on our investment. Frankly it is
kin to the discussions of the effectiveness of a good education vs. a bad one or none at all. In a
study from Capella University in 2014, teachers in a New Jersey school who had worked for at
least a year in inclusion education were interviewed. These 18 teachers agreed that there were 3
effective benefits of inclusion. They are as follows:
1.Children with special needs learn to build relationships with peers and vice versa.
2.Negative perceptions of inclusion by teachers slowed down the pace of educating.
3.Professional development and planning for the teachers increased the overall effectiveness of the
program.
The key to the effectiveness of inclusion could be argued as discussed in our textbook in chapter 2.
That Inclusion is now a worldwide educational issue and we have become aware that our real
problem is deciding which students should be taught what criteria, which students need special

Give an example of parallel construction. Parallelism in outlining means having coordinate points
throughout the outline that have parallel grammatical construction. A good example to use is
quoted directly from the course text book, For example, a key phrase outline of a speech on how
to write a resume begins with a first main point labeled, Things to include. The second point
should be Things to omit, rather than Leaving out unnecessary information (Grice amp; Skinner,
2010, p.194) . In other words, coordinate main points can be expressed as verb phrases, while the
coordinate sub points may be expressed as nouns or noun phrases using parallelism in outlining.

  • 2. The Differences Of Cruel And Unusual Punishment Cruel and Unusual Punishment If you had the choice would you rather die from being crushed by an elephant or by what the persians called Scaphism ? You could have rats dig through your flesh into your chest or be boiled alive (Eldridge 2017). It all sounds pretty tempting am I right? The eighth amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibits the federal government from imposing cruel and unusual punishment for federal crimes. What is cruel and unusual punishment? What are the differences between old medieval, Roman, Egyptian and, nowadays cruel and unusual punishments? To understand the topic of my paper we have to understand what cruel and unusual punishment means. Dictionary.com states that it is punishment prohibited by the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution. Cruel and unusual punishment includes torture, deliberately degrading punishment, or punishment that is too severe for the crime committed. This concept helps guarantee due process even to convicted criminals. Many people have argued that capital punishment should be considered cruel and unusual punishment (Dictionary.com 2017). Cruel; disposed to inflict pain or suffering, devoid of humane feelings, causing or conducive to injury, grief, or pain. Unusual; not usual : uncommon, rare. Punishment; suffering, pain, or loss that serves as retribution: a penalty inflicted on an offender through judicial procedure (Merriam Webster 2017). • 3. Knowledge Increases Sorrow Muhammad Ali Fawad Dr. Aamna Khalid Writing and Communication (SS 100) 17 March 2013 He That Increases Knowledge Increases Sorrow Philosophers have struggled with answering the question of the meaning of life since the time of Plato. In attempts to answer this question they, have deconstructed this idea and have, in the process, isolated the components of what makes life meaningful. Among the many components one is the drive to seek wisdom and knowledge in order to avoid suffering caused by ignorance and finding happiness. (Gyatso, The Meaning of Life: Buddhist Perspectives on Cause and Effect, 78). There are many discrepancies present as to what constitutes knowledge. Presently the terms knowledge and information have become... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They have come to conclusion that the only way to be happy is to stay away from depressing and troubling matters, which to some degree is true, but this does not justify being ignorant about all that happens in the world. The problem with this ideology hits the very basic of human instincts, the desire to know. ...we can t deny our thought, or our memories. To deny our thought is to deny our dignity. Our dignity follows the direction of our thought. (Blaise Pascal). People who hold the sentiment of ignorance being bliss do not contribute to the evolution of society; they are consumers, not producers. Society has a wide variety of flaws, such as rape culture, gender inequality, racism, intolerance, extremism, etc. However, having knowledge about these only adds to one s awareness and it is because of this awareness that the individual can work towards reducing and henceforth eradicating these flaws from society. Unaware individuals are simply cogs in the machine, who, because of their unawareness have no desire to change the world around them. Even if they do, they find themselves flabbergasted when they try to think of a solution. Pessimism never got anyone anywhere. Unfortunately being aware of these issues also includes knowing about the terrifying stories of people who have been wronged. We can agree to the fact that rape is prevalent in society and that it is difficult to talk about without feeling uncomfortable. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Chem B Experiment Lab Report The purpose of this lab was to experimentally and scientifically ascertain the percentage of oxygen in Chem B at Woonsocket High School. It was hypothesized that if the percentage of oxygen is measured experimentally in Chem B at Woonsocket High School, then it would be higher than the percentage of oxygenin dry air, which is 20.95%, because the air is not dry due to moisture in the air from people breathing and the altitude of where the experiment takes place may affect it as well. To conduct this experiment, a candle was placed upright in a pan of water, was lit, and the flame was allowed to fully develop. Then a graduated cylinder was placed upside down to represent an airtight chamber, and the water rose. The point where it rose to was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The number of people in the room, contributing to the humidity, is one of the contributing factors to the change in percentages of oxygen. The condensation of a person s exhaled breath is a factor that also minimally contributes to the humidity in the atmosphere. Humidity is the amount of water vapor in the air at any given moment. When a person exhales, it marginally impacts the relative humidity, and, due to common sense, if there is more people in the room, there is a greater level of humidity. The percentage of oxygen in dry air is 20.95%. However, the air is not always dry. Thus, the percentage of oxygen cannot always be the same if humidity is always changing. Furthermore, dew point temperature is the absolute measure of the amount of water vapor present in the air. So, if the temperature is higher, it can hold more water vapor, making warmer climates much more humid than cooler climates. So, the temperature in the room is also an indirect contributing factor to the percentage of oxygen in the air. The distance above sea level is thought to potentially affect the percentages of oxygen. Nonetheless, it has been established that the percentage of oxygen molecules is always the same when considering altitude. This is because air is compressible, so the weight of all the air above applies pressure to the air at that particular altitude, making that air at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. How Irving Creates A Portrait Of Sneed As More And More Pig In the memoir Trying to save Piggy Sneed, John Irving recounts how his grandmother s kindness towards a retarded garbage collector, Sneed, inspired him to become a writer. One of the key aspects of the memoir is how Irving creates a portrait of Sneed as more and more pig like. The effect of this portrait is to make readers believe, by the end of the memoir, that Sneed is a pig. Irving starts the memoir with the statement that all memoirs are partially made up, and as such, Trying to save Piggy Sneed, too, has false components. He uses his imagination throughout the memoir to supplement his memory and to alter facts about Sneed, so as to create a false and cruel picture of him. My aim is to analyze how Irving uses his imagination to characterize Sneed and answer why does he, even as an adult, insist on being abusive to this innocent man? In paragraph 8, Irving emphasizes that Sneed lived with his pigs, imagining that his pigs would crowd around him for warmth. He associates Sneed s smell and look with his pig like qualities. But, although Sneed smelled and looked awful, this alone is not conclusive. Sneed was poor and retarded and couldn t talk, so the only thing he could do for a living was collect garbage and keep some pigs, work in which it is not easy to maintain hygiene. Because his barn was small, Sneed had to remain close to his pigs, which was the reason he looked and smelled awful, rather than a willingness to live like a pig, as Irving describes. ... This budget included food and the venue to host 50 alumni. My role included finding venues, and sending invitations to alumni. Over 100 alumni attended the Black Alumni Mixer, and we raised over $2,000. Additional duties as Chair include recruiting, engaging and encouraging Alumni to participate in university events as volunteers and attend alumni events. 4.) It had been years since I had done something challenging and wanted to prove to the men, that were waiting for my arrival, of my strength. The weather had grown colder and the snow continued to fall with every step I took. Several times I had licked my lips, forgetting the low temperature, and would instantly feel the saliva hardening into ice. Prior to the hike, a man offered a hospitality ride from the nearest hotel due to the upcoming weather drop and lack of phone connections along the path. Without thinking about how I should be careful also because that could very well happen to me, I felt the ice beneath me crack and my feet, unable to move, becoming engulfed in the piercing water. Irritated and quickly noticing the frigidness of my body, I decided it was time to take a break, start a fire, and enjoy it s warmth. I placed my boots and my bare feet near the fire in an attempt to dry them. The first fire was a success, so I thought to myself, This one will be no different. I was wrong. The first time, the fire was put out by snow falling from a branch above him. The second time, the fire was almost a success but was ruined by the loss of feelings in my hand as I tried to build its flame. Now discourage, I begin to focus on my unfortunate luck and lack of company. Of course, the dog was a nice companion, but deep down I felt uneasy about its intentions. Is it simply lonely? Was it out looking for food when it stumbled across me? Wait. That thought gave me an idea . What if I killed the dog for a source of food but more so for the warm its body held? Other countries eat dogs. It wouldn t be a completely morbid act to commit. I pondered on this thought, growing restless and uneasy at my body and its ability to withstand the cold. • 11. Oskar Schindler Comparison Oskar Schindler was as you would call it, the protagonist of the film. He was the man looking to make a fortune off the German invasion in Poland, he could be considered as callous or greedy. As you are introduced to Schindler you see him picking out each part of his outfit. The suit, tie, shoes and pants. Right down to the pin and how much money was in his pocket. This came off to me as being a narcasist, or pompass. Schindler began as a womanizing and immoral man who only cared about his personal gain. He was not faithful to his wife and had many mistresses. His wife Emilie did not live with him for most of their marriage because of it,and when she walked in on him and the mistress she was very upset and annoyed by Shindler. Schindler, who... He views Jews as vermin, creatures unworthy of possessing basic human rights. He kills often and without hesitation or provocation. Unlike Schindler, Goeth never strays into goodness. However, the lack of change in his basic nature does not render him a one dimensional character; Goeth is a complicated and conflicted man, as well. He lusts after his Jewish maid, Helen Hirsch, and actor Ralph Fiennes skillfully conveys both the strength and ambivalence of this passion. Goeth attempts to seduce Helen, and when she shows no reaction, he turns on her, blames her for trying to tempt him, calls her names, and beats her savagely. Later, when Schindler wants to buy Helen to put her on his list, Goeth refuses. He tells Schindler he will never let her go, that he wants to bring her back to Vienna and grow old with her. Schindler tells him it can never be, and Goeth, exhibiting his conflicting feelings, replies that he would never subject Helen to Auschwitz, but would shoot her in the head, mercifully, instead. • 12. Describe and Assess the Evidence That Socialisation Plays... Socialisation refers to the process of learning one s culture and how to live within it. The process of socialisation involves the transmission of culture from one generation to the next. It is during socialisation that individuals learn the values and norms that play such an important part in shaping human behaviour. Socialisation provides the skills and habits necessary for acting and participating within one s society. Charles Cooley divided socialisation into two stages primary and secondary socialisation. Pill Bug Lab Report Food Preferences in the Sow Bug (Porcellio Laevis) Purpose The purpose of this experiment is to determine what kind of food the sow bug prefers; decaying leaves, potatoes, grapes, or sow bug food. Hypothesis If a sow bug is placed in a choice tray, and has access to decaying leaves, potatoes, grapes, and sow bug food, the sow bug will choose the decaying leaves over its other options. This hypothesis was based on research stating that a sow bug s main food source is decaying vegetation. This information could be used in a variety of different ways. It would be helpful in pest control as well as in keeping a sow bug alive. For people who consider sow bugs a nuisance, the data could reduce the population of sow bugs in certain areas by removing the decaying leaves. This would make the habitat less inviting and therefore discourage the presence of sow bugs. Mead believed that animals act instinctively and without deliberation. Integrationist s believe that humans require social stimulation and exposure to abstract symbol systems to embark upon conceptual thought processes that characterize our species. Without the symbolic interaction that learning a language requires, we wouldn t be able to think though our responses, we d only react. (Roebuck, 1966:506) The fall of the Roman Republic occurred during the late second century BC and resulted in various leading figures emerging such as Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus. Tiberius Gracchus was largely responsible for creating and initiating a long term political crisis in Rome in the early first century through his land reformations and desire to aid the poor. However, his intentions led not only to political arguments but violence within Roman society. In the video documentary, The Cove, Ric O Barry and his team of activists are protesting the dolphin slaughter occurring in Taiji, Japan. Their goal is to reduce the number of dolphins killed each year and hopefully stop the slaughter entirely. Mr. Barry and his team, are model global citizens as they abide by the law, are extremely informed about the cause they are protesting, and display purposeful and active citizens greatly through their work. Therefore, Ric O Barry and his team of activists are remarkable examples of global citizens based off of the four characteristics describing a good global citizen. Ric O Barry and his team demonstrate excellent global citizenship through their care and concern for the endangered dolphins in Japan, even if they do not necessarily abide the law. Firstly, the only situations in which Mr. Barry and/or the activists feel the need to break the law is when they are trying to help the dolphins, and the law is unfortunately restricting them. In the video documentary, The Cove, Ric O Barry is arrested multiple times for trying to free captive dolphins in Florida and on the Island of Bimini. He shows good civic behavior here because he genuinely cares for animals and the well being of the environment, thus providing credible reasoning for breaking the cruel laws that allow companies to keep animals in captivity. Furthermore, Ric O Barry and his team of activists are law abiding citizens because they ensure that they do not hurt anyone in the process of protesting and they continuously cooperate with the police and other government officials. For example, when Mandy Rae Cruickshank and Kirk Krack visit the cove for the first time, they try to keep the encounter with the Japanese fisherman peaceful even though the fishermen are butting chests with them. • 32. Comparing Cinderella And Cinderella Traditionally fairytales have morals for their audiences. Throughout time, these stories develop themes and ideas that allow readers to discover their purpose. These versions let the audience envision the story from a newer perspective. Modified versions reveal the underlying cause of the storyline and its characters. It is clear that The Little Glass Slipper published by Charles Perraultin 1697 and Cinderellapublished by Brothers Grimmin 1812, display the overall modification of the main idea. Within both tales these themes can be represented through the change in time, the overall plot and character development. The newer purpose of modified stories is demonstrated in Cinderella . The fairytale originated from the story, The Little Glass Slipper, which was written by Charles Perrault. The original tale was reformed through the Brothers Grimm version, otherwise known as Cinderella . When analyzing the tales, the reader notices that each story has its own moral, ending and plot. Both the 1697 and the 1812 versions results in a new ending .The original tale concludes with kindness overruling beauty. The second version concludes with the stepsisters being punished for their actions. The moral of Perrault s version describes Cinderella s kindness to overrule the cruelness of society. The newer versions such as the Brothers Grimm tale display a differing moral, which is that an individual s misbehavior will be punished. These endings allow readers to ... Dupin struggles with accepting the logic of the police that are trying to solve the murder, which is represented by Dupin s special reasoning power and how Dupin knew what to do when the police could not find an answer to the murders (Poe 2 4). With the changing of acts from Parts 1 2 to Part 3 Poe goes from vividly descriptive language on ingenuity to a vicious critique on pure analytical thinking, Poe dismisses the common view at the time that everything can, and should, be explained through analytical reasoning. But at the end of the paragraph Poe shows the harshness of Dupin s gift. Though Poe continues to use visual imagery such as, His eyes looked empty and far away, his choice of descriptive terms begins to intensify (Poe 2). Two Dupins suggests that Dupin himself has two sides to him, the special reasoning side and the unusual reasoning side (Poe 2). The special reasoning side is seen as the one who coldly put things together and the unusual reasoning aspect to Dupin is viewed as the part of him that would just as coldly took them apart, which shows Poe s conflict with how much ingenuity should be within a person (Poe 2). Arthur Miller s play Death of a Salesman critiques this ideology through the outcome of Willy s life and in light of Karl Marx s ideas in Alienation. This is demonstrated when Willy and Linda have a conversation about the refrigerator. Linda mentions how they are close to paying it off, but Willy replies that it just broke again (73). The simulation results as well as compact design of the proposed structure make it suitable to be a part of photonic integrated circuit.
