A Brief Introduction on Judicial Review in the United...
A Brief Introduction on Judicial Review in the United States
Part I: A Brief Introduction on Judicial Review
Judicial review is the doctrine in democratic theory under which legislative and executive actions
are subject to review, and possible invalidation, by the judiciary. Specific courts with judicial review
power must annul the acts of the state when it finds them incompatible with a higher authority, such
as the terms of a written constitution. Judicial review is an example of the functioning of separation
of powers in a modern governmental system (where the judiciary is one of three branches of
government). This principle is interpreted differently in different jurisdictions, which also have
differing views on the different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Raub(1825).Other debates and controversies followed. But Marbury v. Madison has been ratified
by time and practice and has become a cornerstone of the larger constitutional system
Marbury, of course, stands only for the proposition that judges can declare acts of Congress
invalid. In subsequent cases Marshall asserted that judges could also declare invalid executive
orders or actions (Little v. Barreme, 1804 ) and upheld the Judiciary Act of 1789, under which
Congress gave the Supreme Cour power to review and reserve decisions upholding the
constitutionality of state statutes (Martin v. Hunter s Lessee, 1816;Cohens v. Virginia, 1821). Taken
collectively, these cases provide federal judges with impressive tools for monitoring governmental
actions, tools that they have not always been hesitant to use. Through the end of the 1990s, the
Supreme Court has invalidated nearly 140 federal statutes and some 1,200 local laws . State courts
too, with their own power to strike down acts passed within their jurisdiction, are active monitors of
their governments. One scholar estimates that state justices invalidate nearly 25 percent of all laws
challenged in their court rooms.
Through judicial review, state courts determine whether or not state executive acts or state statutes
are valid. They base such rulings on the principle that a state law that violates the U.S. constitution
is invalid. They also decide the constitutionality of state laws under

Letters To Saint Catherine Of Siena San Dominic Church
Catherine was born March 25, 1347, as the 23rd child of Jacopo and Lapa Benincasa. She grew
up as a cheerful, intelligent and intensely religious person. When she was 6, she had a vision of
Christ at the Siena San Dominic Church. By the age of 7, she had a vow of chastity to never get
married. Catherine cut off her hair in order to protest against her mother in order to improve her
appearance to attract a husband. Her father supported her and gave her a room in order to pray
and mediate in peace. She joined the Dominican Third Order at 18 and spent three years in
prayer, austerity and seclusion. She died in April 29, 1380 St Catherine of Sienna dedicated her

Roofing Services In Plano Case Study
For the first few decades after settlers began arriving in the area during the early 1840s, Plano
remained a sleepy little town. Since 1970, however, Plano has seen explosive growth decade after
decade. The increased population attracted new businesses to provide the services and goods
needed. Today, the homeowners and business owners in Plano frequently turn to Alpha Roofing for
services such as emergency roofrepairs, commercial roof replacements, metal roofing systems,
asphalt shingle replacements, attic insulation, siding, gutters and other roofing related services.

A roof leak can ruin inventory, documents and equipment in a business or destroy the carpeting,
furniture and art in a home. Moreover, the leak can damage floor joists, wall supports and rafters,
resulting in repairs that can be costly as well as highly disruptive.
Metal Roof Installations: Owners of commercial properties and homes are embracing metal roofs in
increasing numbers. Metal roofs have lengthy life expectancies, are offered in an extensive range of
styles and require virtually no maintenance. However, metal roofing systems must be installed by
an experienced contractor to avoid potential problems.
Maintenance Programs: Preventive maintenance can help any product including a roof last longer.
Preventive maintenance plans combine periodic inspections and other services to identify potential
issues before they become major problems. These plans help ensure that the roof receives the
routine maintenance needed for a long life while making it easier to budget for the

The Gypsy As A Dichotomy
Since the arrival of Romani people to the British Isles, the figure of the Gypsy has been
controversial by being an object of both fear and desire. The word Gypsy evokes a series of
images of people and their way of life. For some, Gypsies are synonyms of criminals and fortune
tellers, appearing as a threat for the civilization. For others, they remind a nomadic life in nature
exempt from the restrictions of the settled society.
This dichotomy has categorized the Romani people as the exotic other , possessing, at the same
time, the quality of foreigners and the idiosyncrasy of being autochthonous. As Epstein points out,
like the oriental or the colonized, racially marked subject, the Gypsy was associated with a rhetoric
of primitive desires, lawlessness, mystery (etc.) with freedoms from the repressions, both
constraining and culture building of Western civilization. (3).

In the case of Heathcliff, he is a threat for the property of the family. The greatest example is the
power he achieves by owning both Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. However there
are other instances of him rearranging the property: for Catherine I, he takes the place of the
whip she requested as a present from her father s trip to Liverpool (Mr. Earnshaw lost it in
attending on the stranger (32)). Furthermore, his existence in the family requests for sustenance,
provoking Mrs. Earnshaw to react angrily asking her husband How he could fashion to bring that

Building A Way For Mcgill Students
Background The objective of this business proposal is to establish a way for McGill students to
be informed of the occupancy, or rather, the vacancy of seats in the libraries on McGill campus.
It is our group s aim to come up with a system which can count the number of people on the each
floor of a library facility and to calculate the number of vacant seats available. In order to do
achieve this objective, we are to situate sensors at the main entrances of the libraries as well as at
the entryways of each floor in the library buildings. By counting the traffic of people who are
entering and exiting each library building, as well as each floor, an approximate number of the
seats taken in different parts of libraries can be estimated.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Due to the rapid advancement in information technology (IT), which entails information,
communication, mobile, and networking technologies, the service sector s list of ventures is
constantly expanding (Rust Huang, 2014). The advances in IT sector, therefore, are very closely
associated with the service revolution and the information revolution. Rust and Huang (2014)
aim to explain these phenomena s relationship to advances in IT and to consider the implications
of this relationship for marketing science. Much of the drastic transformation of the world s
service sector from an industrial to a post industrial service society is due to both the
contribution of IT to service and from IT as a service. In other words, the advancement of IT has
transformed the nature of service fundamentally (Rust Huang, 2014). IT plays a role of facilitator;
as the mobile and networking technology allows the consumers to access various services
anywhere at any time, IT facilitates firm to customer, firm to firm, and customer to firm
communications online and on mobile devices. Hence, this trend enables application developers to
tailor services to fit the needs of each consumer (Rust Huang, 2014). As an application developer
aims to satisfy a specific need of the target consumers, the service quality and the satisfaction of the
consumers increase. As Figure 1

Learning About A New Culture
Learning about a new culture is very common now days. Most people immigrate to other
countries looking for different goals in life. Some people immigrate for safety purposes; some
people are looking for better opportunities and different quality of life. For some people adjust
themselves to a new culture is easy; the younger they are the easiest is to adjust to a new different
cultureand a different way to live. However, there are many people who struggle every day trying
to learn about a different culture.
Understanding about a different culture takes time, patience y perseverance. Some of the
important facts to learn and experience about a new culture include: new language, different
traditions, different food, different quality of life, different music etc. The idea of changing life
dramatically takes courage, patience and dedication. Every day comes with a different challenge,
whether they are daily basic living tasks or more specific situations that requires the person to be
able to understand and respond immediately. Simple tasks like reading, driving, communicating,
talking, as well as counting money or even paying for a coffee become a big challenge for many
people every day who are learning about a different culture.
Some of the reasons to learn about a different culture are when people choose to live in another
country or they are forced to immigrate to other places for security purposes. Learning about a new
culture means that people will keep their own culture

The House on Mango Street
When I grow up, I want to be a black gum tree. Black gum trees are known for their internal
strength. Instead of dwelling on outward beauty, they spend more time focusing on their inner
growth and developing their core. Only after they have achieved this goal can they produce
beautiful fruits that draw animals near to them. Any surfaces that the berries touch are stained as to
say, I was here and made a permanent difference. After they have utilized their outward influences,
they use their internal scars and hollow places to protect the animals surrounding around it. If
human lives were to reflect the concepts of the black gum tree, governments, individuals, and
communities would be radically transformed. While this is a beautiful image,... Show more content

Now the slab can be seen as a secondary result deriving from the poor condition of the roots. The
roots of the trees act as a metaphor for the community on Mango Street, which supports
Esperanza s development. Because the roots of the community on Mango Street are tangled in
cycles of tragic abuse, Esperanza is deprived of the essential social and ethical requirements she
needs to grow. When Esperanza explains that the trees send ferocious roots beneath the ground ,
she is implying that the trees are trying to dig deeper in order to find an essential element for
their growth (Cisneros 74). New visitors to her neighborhood roll their windows up tightly,
which shows it is not an environment that allows children to develop properly (Cisneros 28).
Because of the deficit her community is causing her, she is unable to grow to her full potential,
and resorts to digging deeper within herself just as the roots of the trees do. A problem arises
when trees try to do this because the roots are more susceptible to disease. Keeping with the
metaphor, Esperanza shows symptoms similar to a tree that has attracted the heart rot disease.
This disease is characterized by external problems seeping through the roots, which lead to the
decay of the heartwood of a tree, and eventually its overall health. Esperanza is obviously being
fed infectious ideas from her misshapen community, and has begun to let it eat away at her heart.
This cycle is started by the roots

Child Labor And Slavery
Child Labor and Slavery Very Rough Draft
Each year, as many as 2.7 million healthy years of life are lost due to child labor. Imagine that
You are being held as a slave and forced to do dangerous labor as a child. Many people are being
held captive and or being forced to do perilous things sweating their lives away, not taking breaks,
and being put in adult like situations. In fact right now there are 15 20 million children working as
slaves. Although it provides children and families with money, and possibly something to learn
from, children should not be enslaved or forced to do labor because it is very dangerous and can
damage a child for the rest of their life.
The employment of a child is most often very dangerous. Not only do children get diseases and
illnesses, while working many children get a drug addiction. Kids get addicted to drugs because
they are either forced or think that it will make their lives easier. In some opinions this can be
true because their lives are so bad they want to kill themselves which drugs can do. Some
children are kidnapped into child laborers and kept as a slave. Lots of parents send their children
off to work everyday for extra money. While this happens the place/person may kidnap them and
keep them as slaves. When children walk by themselves they also get kidnapped and forced into
labor or may get killed for money. Many children are dying from working. 22,000 children a year
die from labor. There are many, many causes from this such

A Summary Of The Smoke Signals And Fences
We ve all experienced tough love before from somebody who wants us to prosper in life and be
successful. They push you harder than you think you can go. However while their attempts to
lead you to do better may not go as intended. This happens more often with parents and their
children. In some of the works we focused on this semester, we viewed examples of this
happening with the father and the son. In the play, Fences, main character Troy does this with
his son Cory. Troy is overly stubborn, so in his mind, the obstacles that he dealt with in life still
happens. This is why Troy is so hard on his son, because he doesn t make the same mistakes that
he already made. He doesn t take into consideration that times have changed in the world. In life
we do what we can and whatever it takes for those we loveso they don t make the same mistakes
that we ve already made. In the play, Fences and the film Smoke Signals we see examples of this
between the father and the son. However, there are some differences between the two.
Never once, throughout the play, had Troy ever told his son that he loved him. When Cory
wanted to go to football practice, Troy refused to allow him and told him to go get a job instead.
Troy wants his son to go out and get his own money so he will never be in the position that his
father was in at such a young age. The discord in Troy s

Production Process And Lean Manufacturing Process
INTRODUCTION
Quality in manufacturing has become an integral part of the production process and lean
manufacturing. The objective is to ensure that all customer project requirements are met to
specification while eliminating waste. Some of the world s largest company s require suppliers to
be on their approved supplier list prior to considering doing business with your company. One of the
major requirements to get on an approved supplier list is to have a certified quality management
system in place. Manufactures recognize the importance of quality certifications and lean processes
and use them as a competitive advantage in gaining new business and retaining current customers.
WHAT IS LEAN
The core idea of lean is to relentlessly work on eliminating waste from the manufacturing process.
Waste can be defined as any activity that does not add value from the customer s perspective.
According to research conducted by the Lean Enterprise Research Centre (LERC), fully 60% of
production activities in a typical manufacturing operation are waste they add no value at all for the
customer. Every company has an opportunity to improve, using lean manufacturing techniques and
other manufacturing best practices. Techniques that enable you to deliver higher quality products at
significantly lower costs (Vorne Industries Inc., 2010 2013).
LEAN PRINCIPLES
Lean Principles in manufacturing can improve operating performance by focusing on the
uninterrupted flow of products and materials

V. Narration
After being selected as the Last Emperor of China by the ill Empress Dowager Tzu Hsi, Henry
Pu yi at his childhood lived a lavish life not knowing of what obligations will face him in growing

As Pu Yi grows up he was free to do whatever he wants, living the life of an emperor but was

The Naked City Film Noir
During the era of film noir, which encompasses the time period of the early 1940s to the late 1950s,
featured numerous films that emphasized cynical attitudes and sexual motivations. However, Jules
Dassin s 1948 film, The Naked City, stood out amongst its competition. The film s style ignores the
usual expressiveness of noir characters, and replaces them with professional, dialed in detectives. In
comparison, another filmnoir movie, The Maltese Falcon, directed by John Hutson and released
in 1941, casted a stereotypical noir protagonist Sam Spade (Humphrey Bogart), in the sense that
Spade is a tarnished hero who is not bound by the normal rules of morality. The Naked City was a

There was almost perfect editing, which can be seen by the few continuity errors, which gives the

Theme Of Empathy In To Kill A Mockingbird
In Maycomb County, Alabama lives an immature man incapable of empathy because he dwells
inside his isolating prison away from the rest of Maycomb. In Harper Lee s novel, To Kill a

1930s living amongst sociopath Arthur Boo Radley. His family imprisoned Boo, middle aged
man, on the accounts of being unstable; yet, he is a paternal guardian to the Finch children from
afar. In the 1930s, teenage delinquency is unacceptable in a local community, forcing him to
conform to a social recluse. The historical 1930s prose does not recognize Boo s childish behavior

John Rawls Theory of Societal Justice Essay
Have you ever wondered what would be required in order to create a just society? Let us think
from the perspective of societal ground zero. We have not been in existence for the past few
thousand years. We have no ancestors to direct us, no rules to follow, and no experience to guide
us. Imagine that we have not even come to be yet. Consider for a moment that society has yet to
be established. Assume there are hypothetical homunculi with the sole task of devising the goals,
the guiding light, for society. How would societal goals be designed so they are fair and just for all?
In what follows, I will attempt to portray the philosophy of John Rawls with regard to the theory of
societal justice. My aim is convey Rawls conception of justice. ... Show more content on

rights and freedoms in harmony with an equivalent system for all other people.
Rawls believes the homunculi, behind a veil of ignorance, would choose this first principle over a
utilitarian perspective mainly due to the fear of unknown consequences. From a utilitarian
approach, the homunculi know that some would end up with an unfair advantage of basic liberties,
while others would be severely and unjustly disadvantaged. This would occur as a result of the
definition of utilitarianism; to create the highest amount of utility averaged among all people in the
society. Within the greatest average utility, there are certain to be outliers who are severely
disadvantaged. It would seem only reasonable to assume the homunculi would choose the principle
that guarantees equal liberties for all over the utilitarian perspective where some would surely be
disadvantaged. Since they are behind a veil of ignorance, the homunculi would want to assure the
best possible minimum. Ensuring equal basic liberties for all would provide a far better minimum
than the greatest average utility, which would certainly leave some people with unjustly
disadvantaged rights and freedoms.

Diabetes Is A Common Disease That Affects A Large Number...
Introduction Few would argue that diabetes mellitus is not a common disease that affects a large
number of the World s population. Shockingly, the World Health Organization reported that an
estimated 347 million people globally have either type 1 or type 2 diabetes (Bossart et al., 2015).
In the United States alone that number is 29 million (Wilkins, 2017). What most people do not
understand is the distinct connection between diabetes and poor oral health. In fact, periodontal
disease is considered to be a common complication of diabetes, proving that the connection between
the two diseases is strong. Diabetes is one of the most common systemic diseases that has been
studied with in depth detail as it relates to periodontal disease. Gingivitis and periodontitisboth fall
under the umbrella of periodontal disease. Gingivitis is inflammation of just the gingival tissue.
When gingivitis is left untreated it leads to periodontitis, which permanently damages the
supporting tissue and bone.
Numerous studies have been conducted throughout the years to scientifically prove the link
between these two common diseases. The research that has been found is overwhelming, revealing
how diabetes can exacerbate periodontal disease. It is important to note that both diabetes and
periodontal disease are considered chronic inflammatory diseases. With such a large number of the
population having some form of diabetes, it will be important for the dental team to understand the

Ethics, Sexual Harassment, And Bullying
I felt very connected to this week s discussions, not because I ve personally been involved in
discrimination, sexual harassment, or bullying but because I spent a lot of time managing
through these issues when I worked as an Operations Manager for Borders, Inc. At any given
time I had ~250 employees and managers in a distribution center reporting to me on three shifts,
six days a week. It was rare that I didn t have some pending issue that required a Human
Resources perspective and these issues were very common themes. I ve never understood why
someone would choose to expend energy on any of these actions but always considered my role
as one that could protect others when it did occur. As we ve discussed, having established
policies that are frequently communicated allows employers to react swiftly to correct any issues
that arise. This was the case when I worked at Borders and it is today at HCA so I feel
comfortable everything possible is being done to discourage and prevent these actions from
occurring. Privacy is a very touchy subject these days and the knife seems to cut both ways when
it comes to who should know what, and when they should know it. On one hand, the privacy of
consumer information becomes a bigger concern every day as companies are hacked and
information is stolen. There are laws that mandate what companies must to in order to protect this
information but I also feel that organizations have their own internal obligation to do what s right for

The Poisonwood Bible Book Report
The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. A book that I never expected to read because of
my stance on avoiding religious books, but oddly enough I could not put it down. The book is a
representation of culture arrogance, racism, greed, ignorance, and imperialism that occurred
through 1959 and on. The book introduces a religious, missionary familyfrom Georgia who are
headed to the village of Kilanga in Belgium Congo. What grabbed my attention in the beginning is
that each member in the family, which happens to be all girls, has their turn to tell their story
through their eyes, except oddly enough the overly religious evangelical Baptist father, who s only
purpose is to spread the name and views of God to the Congolese.
Each daughter is different from the other. You have the oldest, who s to ignorant to try to

Disturbed Minds In Macbeth
Explore the ways in which Browning and Shakespeare present disturbed minds.
Macbeth is Shakespeare s most famous tragedy written between 1603 and 1606. It is strongly
written with King James I of England s interest in mind, the supernatural. Due to this we are
introduced with the idea of the paranormal and witch craft straight away with the three witches. A
Jacobean audience would have feared the supernatural. It foreshadows the likeness of disturbed
characters. Elizabethan superstition was an irrational belief that an object, action or circumstance

The Opelousas Massacre was a horrifying event that occurred on September 28, 1868, in Landry

people were killed in this massacre. Some sources identify as few as 30 people killed. Other

the villain Jafar, who put him up to finding the lamp, has a different idea for its uses. In the end,
Aladdin has to save Princess Jasmineand the city of Agrabah with the influential help of the genie
from Jafar and his evil forces. In Disney s Aladdin, the culture in Agrabah is presented through an

the genie for all of his help. Then, Aladdin and Jasmine ride off into the sunset on their magic

One would be the social cost of the war on drugs on the economy in a finical perspective. The
amount of money being spent and put into the war on drugs including on law enforcement
comes with a price. Creating new regulations, strategies, and team of specialized drug law
enforcement, the amount of money being spent can easily exceed set budgets. Another social
cost is the lack of focus on other social issues that suffer due to spending on the war on drugs.
This means that there are less programs and opportunities for issues such a health care,
education, government assistance etc. that effect citizens and their daily lives. Corruption could
also be a social cost of policing on the war on drugs. This refers to those in higher authorities in
criminal institutions who are involved with the financial gain of illicit activity and provide the
resources for organized criminal groups to develop. This creates a larger problem being the issue
of the drug war only expands through a system we trust to protect us, at the expense of tax payers.
As policing strategies increase so do the methods used, in order to reduce risk of serious crimes
law enforcement will target minor crimes which result in increase of prison populations and a shift
in the ethics and procedures used to maintain a drug free environment. The social costs of policing

`` Tobacco Road `` By Erskine Caldwell
Flaws can Define a Person
How can a single word chose a person s actions and dramatically change their life? In Erskine
Caldwell s Tobacco Road the Lester family goes through a lot in a one week span. Through the
struggles with poverty and barely surviving life. This family shows that the wants are much more
profitable in the long hall. As the story continues, a tragic reality check come upon this Lester family
. In Tobacco Road, Caldwell illustrates how both poverty and lust causes conflict based on the
choices one makes in an attempt to make life better.
Poverty is a lifestyle that can be changed by simply the choices one makes. Toward the end of
chapter seven the narrator talks about Jeeter s life and how he came to inherit the land of the
Tobacco Road. Caldwell states that by the time Jeeter was old enough to work in the fields, the
land had become such a great item of expense that most of it was allowed to grow up into pines
(86). Since Jeeter took on this huge project of running his own cotton farm. He might knew that
since his grandfather started it and then was passed down to his father and then onto him, he was
obligated to continue on the Lester tradition of farming. As a child Jeeter knew he always wanted
to keep the farm alive and continue the production of cotton coming from the Lester farm land.
With working a farm and trying to put food on the table was a difficult task that he could not rise
and meet the challenge. As time went on Jeeter hated that he could

Supernatural Elements in Like Water for Chocolate and the...
A supernatural event is an event which, according to the laws of nature, cannot happen. In the
two works that I have studied Like water for chocolate by Laura esquivel and The house of the
spirits by Isabel allende, magic realism has been used as a common literary device to give the book
a fantasy like twist, making it very interesting and engaging.
Magic realism stretches the boundaries of realism in order to stretch or widen the definition of
reality. In Like Water for Chocolate, magic becomes ordinary, admitted, accepted and integrated
into the rationality and materiality of literary realism. The first instance of magic realism in Like
Water for Chocolate is Tita s entry into the world, Tita was literally washed into this world... Show

This, correspondingly, reinforces the readers image of the story as well as their interests in
continuing the plot. Other examples of supernatural instances could be the arrival of the spirits of
Mama Elena, Nacha, and Morning Light (John Brown s dead grandmother). The significance of
these characters was that they were all maternal figures. Nacha was the ranch cook who was
more to Tita than her biological mother, and Morning Light reminded Tita of Nacha after Nacha
s death, and was a motherly figure for John Brown. Mama Elena returns as a ghost when Tita was
already very disturbed; even after her death Mama Elena has more power over Tita than in life, has
over herself. Other example could include the incident when after a long period of muteness Tita
cried and there was a stream that was running down the stairs when John Brown entered.
In the House of the Spirits, the approach is a little different, for instance the description of Rosa s
beauty At birth Rosa was white and smooth, without a wrinkle, like a porcelain doll, with green
hair and yellow eyes the most beautiful creature to be born on earth. Clara Trueba s ability to
move the salt cellar across the dinner table, accompanied by her predictions of deaths and natural
disasters, reading cards, and playing the piano with the cover down and general clairvoyance. And

Intro to Philosophy
The Existence of God
Thomas Aquinas was a theologian that was a priest in the 1200 s and wanted to prove that God
existed. He created many books and articles in his lifetime about God and things with the catholic
religion, but, his more famous book Summa Thelogia gave five arguments that God exists in
Articles II and III they are explained in detail. Below is my understanding of what he was saying
the works of two other man that had comments on this man. Through the arguments of these three
man I have came up with my own views and created an argument based on what they have to say.
In Article II Aquinas states why people think that God doesn t exist and goes on to destroy them
piece by piece. The first argument in Article II against God states that God does not existence
because it can not be demonstrated that he does in fact exist. He answers calmly and uses
examples from the Bible to help him with the answer and then he states what he thinks. Based on
what he stated in his example he went off of it and said that what he thinks. He states in Article II
and I quote I reply, therefore, that God s existence, and those other things of this nature that can be
known through natural reason concerning God, as is said in Rom. I., are not articles of faith, but

reducing teenage pregnancy and helping welfare recipients finding employment (Gring Pemble,
2001). The author was interested in the discursive practices by which policy makers negotiate and
create a given social reality, a powerful construction on which future legislative action is premised
(Gring Pemble, 2001, p. 342). These discursive practices were focused on the depiction of welfare

341). The specific PRWORA case study is used to demonstrate the importance of rhetoric when

dialogue concerning the negotiation and construction of public policy as a rhetorical process
beginning with bill proposals, congressional hearings and congressional debates (Gring Pemble,
2001, p. 342). There are several important implications that contribute to this scholarly dialogue.
First of all, the function of depictions in policy creation is demonstrated. Social policy
deliberations are anecdotal in nature because the depictions vivify problems that are difficult to
quantify (Gring Pemble, 2001, p. 359). In depictive rhetoric, depictions imply narratives (Gring

artists purvey their message, whatever it may be. As such, Orlan is a fearless artist on the world
stage, displaying her body as a shifting, ever changing human identity, and body art as self
representation and self expression. At its core, cosmetic surgery, medical technology, physical and
biochemical status of ethical issues are prevalent in modern society. Change of appearance in
human development appears in one artistic expressional event after another, such as: Austronesian
tattoo, tattooed, Western grant wash and circumcision, long necked tribe neck plus a circle of
copper rings, the wrapping of Chinese Ming and Qing Dynasty feet for small size, the obsessional
fitness of modern society with fasting and its obsession with a set standard of female physical

Effect of Growing Internet Newspapers on Circulation of Print Newspapers in the U.S.
A paper submitted to 54 Conference of International Communication Conference for consideration
for presentation th October 2003
ABSTRACT An Internet survey of publishers and online editors found that growth of the Internet
newspaper yielded a slightly negative effect on print newspapers circulation. The findings suggest
that the smaller the newspaper, the larger effect the Internet newspapers had on the print
newspapers. Small and medium sized print newspapers showed obvious decreasing circulation
since 1990 while the declining trend was not evident for large newspapers. The readership of the
Internet newspaper had been considerably growing since ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

For example, this medium can deliver the news immediately; Internet sites can be updated
whenever a reporter discovers more information. 13 The rapid growth of the Internet even changed
the ritual of reading a daily newspaper. Once

newspaper reading was limited to the one serving people s home city or town plus a national
daily like The Wall Street Journal or USA Today. Now, however, local papers and any one of
numerous newspapers from across the country are only a few clicks away. 14 With all the
advantages, the virtual newspapers will become a competitive displacement for printed
newspapers. 15 Studies found some support for relative constancy with growth of the Internet
newspapers. A survey by Editor Publisher found that more than one third of the users of Web sites
run by newspapers said they reduced their reading of print newspapers since going online. A
survey conducted in Texas reported that among PointCast Users who are predominately business
people, nearly half of them spend less time reading newspapers. 16
Effect of the Internet Newspaper on Print newspapers Researchers proposed that print newspapers
and their online counterparts were characterized by head on competition, and readers shifted from
print to online.17 A survey released in September 2000 pointed out that when users surfed online
for local information, the

Reusing Plastic Bottles Research
Introduction:
Enough plastic is thrown away each year to circle the earth four times and 50% of the plastic we
use, we only use once and is thrown away. There is initiate ways for plastic bottles to be reused in a
scientific way. We are investigating how the air pressure we can create in a bottle will affect how
high or low it travels. In the process we will be reusing plastic bottles. Will the product inside of the
bottle be significant to the explosion it will make? If a certain amount of alcohol is inserted in the
bottle will the rocket malfunction?
Materials:
Description and Properties
Plastic is a material composed of a wide range of synthetic or semisynthetic organic compounds that
are malleable and be molded into solid objects. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although heavy and brittle, hardened clay and glass were used for storage. Some natural
substances were sticky and moldable. Rubber wasn t very useful for storage because it eventually
lost its ability to leap back into shape and became sticky when heated. The way plastics are
manufactured has evolved from the use of natural plastic materials to the use of chemically
modified, natural materials and finally to completely synthetic molecules. Early plastics were bio
derived materials, which are organic polymers. In 1600 BC, Mesoamericans used natural rubber
for balls, bands, and figurines. In 1839, Charles Goodyear discovered a process in which sulfur
reacted with crude rubber when heated and then cooled. The rubber became resilient upon cooling,
it could stretch, but it snapped back to its original shape. It also retained its flexibility when heated.
We now know that the sulfur forms chemical bonds between adjacent rubber polymerstrands. The
bonds cross link the polymer strands, allowing them to go back to normal when stretched.
Goodyear had discovered the process now known as vulcanization, which made rubber more

  • 2. A Brief Introduction on Judicial Review in the United... A Brief Introduction on Judicial Review in the United States Part I: A Brief Introduction on Judicial Review Judicial review is the doctrine in democratic theory under which legislative and executive actions are subject to review, and possible invalidation, by the judiciary. Specific courts with judicial review power must annul the acts of the state when it finds them incompatible with a higher authority, such as the terms of a written constitution. Judicial review is an example of the functioning of separation of powers in a modern governmental system (where the judiciary is one of three branches of government). This principle is interpreted differently in different jurisdictions, which also have differing views on the different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Raub(1825).Other debates and controversies followed. But Marbury v. Madison has been ratified by time and practice and has become a cornerstone of the larger constitutional system Marbury, of course, stands only for the proposition that judges can declare acts of Congress invalid. In subsequent cases Marshall asserted that judges could also declare invalid executive orders or actions (Little v. Barreme, 1804 ) and upheld the Judiciary Act of 1789, under which Congress gave the Supreme Cour power to review and reserve decisions upholding the constitutionality of state statutes (Martin v. Hunter s Lessee, 1816;Cohens v. Virginia, 1821). Taken collectively, these cases provide federal judges with impressive tools for monitoring governmental actions, tools that they have not always been hesitant to use. Through the end of the 1990s, the Supreme Court has invalidated nearly 140 federal statutes and some 1,200 local laws . State courts too, with their own power to strike down acts passed within their jurisdiction, are active monitors of their governments. One scholar estimates that state justices invalidate nearly 25 percent of all laws challenged in their court rooms. Through judicial review, state courts determine whether or not state executive acts or state statutes are valid. They base such rulings on the principle that a state law that violates the U.S. constitution is invalid. They also decide the constitutionality of state laws under ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Gypsy As A Dichotomy Since the arrival of Romani people to the British Isles, the figure of the Gypsy has been controversial by being an object of both fear and desire. The word Gypsy evokes a series of images of people and their way of life. For some, Gypsies are synonyms of criminals and fortune tellers, appearing as a threat for the civilization. For others, they remind a nomadic life in nature exempt from the restrictions of the settled society. This dichotomy has categorized the Romani people as the exotic other , possessing, at the same time, the quality of foreigners and the idiosyncrasy of being autochthonous. As Epstein points out, like the oriental or the colonized, racially marked subject, the Gypsy was associated with a rhetoric of primitive desires, lawlessness, mystery (etc.) with freedoms from the repressions, both constraining and culture building of Western civilization. Due to the rapid advancement in information technology (IT), which entails information, communication, mobile, and networking technologies, the service sector s list of ventures is constantly expanding (Rust Huang, 2014). The advances in IT sector, therefore, are very closely associated with the service revolution and the information revolution. Rust and Huang (2014) aim to explain these phenomena s relationship to advances in IT and to consider the implications of this relationship for marketing science. Much of the drastic transformation of the world s service sector from an industrial to a post industrial service society is due to both the contribution of IT to service and from IT as a service. In other words, the advancement of IT has transformed the nature of service fundamentally (Rust Huang, 2014). IT plays a role of facilitator; as the mobile and networking technology allows the consumers to access various services anywhere at any time, IT facilitates firm to customer, firm to firm, and customer to firm communications online and on mobile devices. Only after they have achieved this goal can they produce beautiful fruits that draw animals near to them. Any surfaces that the berries touch are stained as to say, I was here and made a permanent difference. The roots of the trees act as a metaphor for the community on Mango Street, which supports Esperanza s development. Because the roots of the community on Mango Street are tangled in cycles of tragic abuse, Esperanza is deprived of the essential social and ethical requirements she needs to grow. When Esperanza explains that the trees send ferocious roots beneath the ground , she is implying that the trees are trying to dig deeper in order to find an essential element for their growth (Cisneros 74). New visitors to her neighborhood roll their windows up tightly, which shows it is not an environment that allows children to develop properly (Cisneros 28). Because of the deficit her community is causing her, she is unable to grow to her full potential, and resorts to digging deeper within herself just as the roots of the trees do. A problem arises when trees try to do this because the roots are more susceptible to disease. Keeping with the metaphor, Esperanza shows symptoms similar to a tree that has attracted the heart rot disease. This disease is characterized by external problems seeping through the roots, which lead to the decay of the heartwood of a tree, and eventually its overall health. Esperanza is obviously being fed infectious ideas from her misshapen community, and has begun to let it eat away at her heart. This cycle is started by the roots ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In Harper Lee s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, published in 1960, she includes these caricatures of Maycomb Southerners in the 1930s living amongst sociopath Arthur Boo Radley. His family imprisoned Boo, middle aged man, on the accounts of being unstable; yet, he is a paternal guardian to the Finch children from afar. In the 1930s, teenage delinquency is unacceptable in a local community, forcing him to conform to a social recluse. From a utilitarian approach, the homunculi know that some would end up with an unfair advantage of basic liberties, while others would be severely and unjustly disadvantaged. This would occur as a result of the definition of utilitarianism; to create the highest amount of utility averaged among all people in the society. Within the greatest average utility, there are certain to be outliers who are severely disadvantaged. It would seem only reasonable to assume the homunculi would choose the principle that guarantees equal liberties for all over the utilitarian perspective where some would surely be disadvantaged. Since they are behind a veil of ignorance, the homunculi would want to assure the best possible minimum. Shockingly, the World Health Organization reported that an estimated 347 million people globally have either type 1 or type 2 diabetes (Bossart et al., 2015). In the United States alone that number is 29 million (Wilkins, 2017). What most people do not understand is the distinct connection between diabetes and poor oral health. In fact, periodontal disease is considered to be a common complication of diabetes, proving that the connection between the two diseases is strong. Diabetes is one of the most common systemic diseases that has been studied with in depth detail as it relates to periodontal disease. Gingivitis and periodontitisboth fall under the umbrella of periodontal disease. Gingivitis is inflammation of just the gingival tissue. When gingivitis is left untreated it leads to periodontitis, which permanently damages the supporting tissue and bone. Numerous studies have been conducted throughout the years to scientifically prove the link between these two common diseases. Ethics, Sexual Harassment, And Bullying I felt very connected to this week s discussions, not because I ve personally been involved in discrimination, sexual harassment, or bullying but because I spent a lot of time managing through these issues when I worked as an Operations Manager for Borders, Inc. At any given time I had ~250 employees and managers in a distribution center reporting to me on three shifts, six days a week. It was rare that I didn t have some pending issue that required a Human Resources perspective and these issues were very common themes. I ve never understood why someone would choose to expend energy on any of these actions but always considered my role as one that could protect others when it did occur. As we ve discussed, having established policies that are frequently communicated allows employers to react swiftly to correct any issues that arise. This was the case when I worked at Borders and it is today at HCA so I feel comfortable everything possible is being done to discourage and prevent these actions from occurring. Privacy is a very touchy subject these days and the knife seems to cut both ways when it comes to who should know what, and when they should know it. On one hand, the privacy of consumer information becomes a bigger concern every day as companies are hacked and information is stolen. There are laws that mandate what companies must to in order to protect this information but I also feel that organizations have their own internal obligation to do what s right for ... • 25. The Poisonwood Bible Book Report The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. A book that I never expected to read because of my stance on avoiding religious books, but oddly enough I could not put it down. The book is a representation of culture arrogance, racism, greed, ignorance, and imperialism that occurred through 1959 and on. The book introduces a religious, missionary familyfrom Georgia who are headed to the village of Kilanga in Belgium Congo. What grabbed my attention in the beginning is that each member in the family, which happens to be all girls, has their turn to tell their story through their eyes, except oddly enough the overly religious evangelical Baptist father, who s only purpose is to spread the name and views of God to the Congolese. Each daughter is different from the other. You have the oldest, who s to ignorant to try to understand the culture of the Congolese and just wanted to go back to the US where her beauty belonged. Two twins who are complete opposites because of a disease that harmed the younger s mind rendering her crippled and mute, but gave her the most beautiful and dark view of the world. The amount of money being spent and put into the war on drugs including on law enforcement comes with a price. Another social cost is the lack of focus on other social issues that suffer due to spending on the war on drugs. In the two works that I have studied Like water for chocolate by Laura esquivel and The house of the spirits by Isabel allende, magic realism has been used as a common literary device to give the book a fantasy like twist, making it very interesting and engaging. Magic realism stretches the boundaries of realism in order to stretch or widen the definition of reality. In Like Water for Chocolate, magic becomes ordinary, admitted, accepted and integrated into the rationality and materiality of literary realism. This, correspondingly, reinforces the readers image of the story as well as their interests in continuing the plot. Other examples of supernatural instances could be the arrival of the spirits of Mama Elena, Nacha, and Morning Light (John Brown s dead grandmother). The significance of these characters was that they were all maternal figures. Nacha was the ranch cook who was more to Tita than her biological mother, and Morning Light reminded Tita of Nacha after Nacha s death, and was a motherly figure for John Brown. Mama Elena returns as a ghost when Tita was already very disturbed; even after her death Mama Elena has more power over Tita than in life, has over herself. Other example could include the incident when after a long period of muteness Tita cried and there was a stream that was running down the stairs when John Brown entered.
