Network Rail manages over 190,000 earthwork assets across the UK's 16,000 route km of track. Traditionally, earthwork inspections cost between £50-£120 per five chain length and were conducted on around 55,000 sites. However, the document describes how GIS analysis of aerial imagery and contour data allowed Network Rail to automatically extract geometry data on over 150,000 cross-sections and identify locations of 80% of sites previously marked as "never inspected", removing the need for on-site visits and saving around £1.2 million. The methodology is now being applied nationwide to generate a complete and consistent record of all earthwork assets for the first time.

Michael Ells - Surface disposal
This document summarizes several studies on the public health impacts of surface disposal and smearing of human feces in alpine, forest, and arid environments. The studies found that:
1) Fecal bacteria can survive on snow but numbers decrease significantly within a week as the feces dry out. Deeper in feces, bacteria survive longer but decrease by one order of magnitude every 3-4 weeks.
2) Smeared feces on rocks in alpine, forest, and desert environments begin drying immediately and disappear almost completely within 8 weeks, with 84-95% weight loss on average.

ColdFusion Summit 2016 - Powering GIS Operations with ColdFusion
ColdFusion has played a vital role in CCCSD’s Geographic Information System (GIS) operations for more than 15 years. I have used ColdFusion to develop several successful intranet web applications: two GIS map portals, the reporting engine for a brand-new GIS web portal, and a workflow tracking and records management tool for CCCSD infrastructure projects. In the first part of this session I’ll share how these applications have evolved and why ColdFusion was crucial to their success.
While the ColdFusion Markup Language (CFML) is one of the easiest web-development languages to learn, being a “part-time” and self-taught (remember the “CF WACK” books?) developer has made honing my skills quite challenging. Being the sole web developer in my organization has presented additional challenges – I have no co-workers to mentor me or perform code reviews. In the second part of this session I’ll share how I get assistance (as well as offer assistance), which community-developed tools have made my life easier, and how I filter the relevant gems from the ever-growing mountain of “new” and “awesome” web application technologies and methods.

As part of the Welsh Government’s Environment and Rural Affairs Monitoring and Modelling Programme (ERAMMP), the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (UKCEH) is re-surveying soil, plants, insects, birds, water and landscape features at 300 distinct 1 km2 sample sites, dispersed across the whole of Wales. This large-scale, four-year project is being undertaken by thirty seven specialist surveyors, who use a suite of ArcGIS apps to view and capture data in the field.
