This document lists and provides brief biographies of six famous Italian explorers: Giovanni da Pian del Carpine, the first European traveller in the Mongol Empire in the 13th century; Marco Polo, famous for his travels in central Asia and China in the late 13th-early 14th century; Giovanni Caboto, who discovered the mainland of North America while exploring for England in 1497; Cristoforo Colombo, who sailed in 1492 and discovered the Americas while exploring for Spain; Amerigo Vespucci, who discovered the Amazon River and demonstrated that the Americas were a separate landmass from Asia; and Umberto Nobile, an engineer and Arctic explorer who was the first to fly

1497, he crossed the Atlantic and
discovered the mainland of North America

4. Amerigo Vespucci (1454–1512).Discovered the Amazon
River in South America. The name for the Americas is
derived from his given name because he first
demonstrated that the new land discovered by
Columbus did not represent Asia’s eastern edge as
initially conjectured from Columbus woyages, but instead
constituted an entirely separate landmass.
