Alderfer further developed Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory into his ERG theory, which categorizes needs into existence, relatedness, and growth. Existence needs are basic material and safety requirements. Relatedness needs are the desire for maintaining interpersonal relationships. Growth needs involve personal development. Alderfer's theory differs from Maslow's in that lower needs don't have to be satisfied first, frustration in higher needs can lead to regression to lower needs, and the order of needs may differ between individuals.

Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a theory in psychology proposed by Abraham Maslow in his 1943 paper "A Theory of Human Motivation" in Psychological Review.Maslow subsequently extended the idea to include his observations of humans' innate curiosity. His theories parallel many other theories of human developmental psychology, some of which focus on describing the stages of growth in humans. Maslow used the terms "physiological", "safety", "belongingness" and "love", "esteem", "self-actualization", and "self-transcendence" to describe the pattern that human motivations generally move through.
Maslow studied what he called exemplary people such as Albert Einstein, Jane Addams, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Frederick Douglass rather than mentally ill or neurotic people, writing that "the study of crippled, stunted, immature, and unhealthy specimens can yield only a cripple psychology and a cripple philosophy. Maslow studied the healthiest 1% of the college student population.
Maslow's theory was fully expressed in his 1954 book Motivation and Personality.The hierarchy remains a very popular framework in sociology research, management training[6] and secondary and higher psychology instruction.

3. Growth Needs
Internal esteem and self actualization; these impel a person to make creative or productive effects on himself and the environment (e.g., to progress toward one's ideal self). Maslow's fourth and fifth levels. This includes desires to be creative and productive, and to complete meaningful tasks.

6. Differences between ERG theory and
Maslow's model
• A lower level need does not have to be gratified (i.e., a
person may satisfy a need at hand, whether or not a
previous need has been satisfied);
• If a relatively more significant need is not gratified, the
desire to gratify a lesser need will be increased (i.e.,
the frustration in meeting high-order needs might lead
a person to regress to a more concrete need category);
• Alderfer's ERG theory allows the order of the needs to
differ for different people (e.g., it accounts for the
"starving artist" who may place growth needs above
existence ones).
