What is
the
purpose
of the
lesson?
Description of the lesson(s)
This lesson introduces traditional games of the Old Believers. The teacher
(T) discusses the history, ways of life and traditions of the Old Believers
in Estonia. Then the students (Ss) are actively involved into the physical
activities with the further engagement and independent study of the Old
Believers’ traditions (as their homework for the next lesson).
Learning outcomes:
-to develop cultural identity through local knowledge of religious group,
its traditions and history;
- to develop an awareness of traditional games as a form of cultural and
religious identity;
- to engage Ss into independent studying of the unique religious group in
Estonia with a further discussion of their findings and looking at
connections with the present culture represented in Estonian society;
- to teach Ss to identify different forms of culture within Estonian cultural
heritage
Materials:
Flashcards, jumping rope
Technical Requirements
In class: gym facilities;
At home: a computer or tablet or mobile phone with internet access
Ratio of face-to-face and online work:
50-50
Time Required
2 lessons at least (45+45 min)
At the end of the course, the student will:
Understand
The importance of having traditional games in cultural
communities/groups etc.
Know
historical facts, the traditional games
Do
Answer the questions:
1. Who are the Old Believers in Estonia?
2. Where did they live?
3. What were their traditions?
4. Find an interesting fact about the Old Believers life.
Creativity/Innovation
Draw a picture of the Old Believers playing traditional games. Scan
your picture/take a photo of it, and send it to T’s email.
Ss learn how to use school emails effectively when doing their
homework.

Greetings. SS sit and listen to T’s
presentations about the Old
Believers, their traditions and
settlements. T shows the
flashcards.
Warm-up
Running: to catch the maximum
number of classmates in 30 sec.
Then the change of the leader.
Jumping
Rope jumping. Individual
assignment: to have 100 jumpings
in own pace.
Practice
The game “A Fisherman and a
fish”
Many old believers were
fishermen. The T tells about this
tradition. The Ss stand in a circle,

the T is in the middle of it. The T
spins the jumping rope trying to
catch someone. The one being
caught, leaves the circle, does
five squats and then returns into
the game.
The game “A Fisherman and a
fish 2” The Ss are on their bellies
on the floor forming a big circle
and holding hands together
tightly. The T tries to get
someone out of the circle by
pulling legs (a fish). The one
being caught helps teacher to get
more fish out of the circle.
Relaxing game. The Ss are on
their backs with the eyes closed.
The T comes to one of the Ss and
wakes a S up. The one who wakes
up is looking for someone to
wake up and leaves. So that the
next S continues. The game
finishes when the whole class is
awake.

Lesson Plan Subject: PE Lesson Topic: Introduction to traditional games of the Old Believers from lake Peipus in Estonia Lesson Title: Traditional games of the Old Believers Grade Level: 3rd Designed by: Oleg Zakharov Date: 12.10.2019 Lesson Overview What is the purpose of the lesson? Description of the lesson(s) This lesson introduces traditional games of the Old Believers. The teacher (T) discusses the history, ways of life and traditions of the Old Believers in Estonia. Then the students (Ss) are actively involved into the physical activities with the further engagement and independent study of the Old Believers’ traditions (as their homework for the next lesson). Learning outcomes: -to develop cultural identity through local knowledge of religious group, its traditions and history; - to develop an awareness of traditional games as a form of cultural and religious identity; - to engage Ss into independent studying of the unique religious group in Estonia with a further discussion of their findings and looking at connections with the present culture represented in Estonian society; - to teach Ss to identify different forms of culture within Estonian cultural heritage Materials: Flashcards, jumping rope Technical Requirements In class: gym facilities; At home: a computer or tablet or mobile phone with internet access Ratio of face-to-face and online work: 50-50 Time Required 2 lessons at least (45+45 min) At the end of the course, the student will: Understand The importance of having traditional games in cultural communities/groups etc. Know

Find an interesting fact about the Old Believers life. Creativity/Innovation Draw a picture of the Old Believers playing traditional games. Scan your picture/take a photo of it, and send it to T’s email. Ss learn how to use school emails effectively when doing their homework. Flexible learning Identify lesson delivery & types of activities: LESSON PROCEDURE AND SEQUENCE - ACTIVITIES AND TASKS TO ENGAGE STUDENTS School whole class Teacher led instruction/face to face Types of activities and Tasks / Resources Needed Lead-in Greetings. SS sit and listen to T’s presentations about the Old Believers, their traditions and settlements. T shows the flashcards. Warm-up Running: to catch the maximum number of classmates in 30 sec. Then the change of the leader. Jumping Rope jumping. Individual assignment: to have 100 jumpings in own pace. Practice The game “A Fisherman and a fish” Many old believers were fishermen. The T tells about this tradition. The Ss stand in a circle, Time 10 min 5 min 5 min 8 min
  • 3. the T is in the middle of it. The T spins the jumping rope trying to catch someone. The one being caught, leaves the circle, does five squats and then returns into the game. The game “A Fisherman and a fish 2” The Ss are on their bellies on the floor forming a big circle and holding hands together tightly. The T tries to get someone out of the circle by pulling legs (a fish). The one being caught helps teacher to get more fish out of the circle. Relaxing game. The Ss are on their backs with the eyes closed. The T comes to one of the Ss and wakes a S up. The one who wakes up is looking for someone to wake up and leaves. So that the next S continues.
