Spring Into Reading and Unit Wrap-up
Dear Parents,

The week started in a very fun way with 5A reading to buddies in Reception as part of our
Spring into Reading activities. Today, of course, was one of the more relaxed days of the
school year with the students arriving to school in their pajamas and eating pancakes for
lunch! Yesterday, we had the opportunity to listen to the storytelling of Lynne Kirk; the
children were in awe of how well she told her story. There was hardly a sound in the LLAC
as she spoke!

This week students worked diligently to wrap up our unit, “Sharing the Planet.” They have
been involved in planning, researching and organizing information to create an original
imaginative recount that demonstrates their understanding of our central idea. They also
have selected a right from the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and created a Public
Service Announcement to educate society more deeply about its meaning and how we can
sustain it. Next week these PSAs will be posted on our Grade 5 Youtube channel as well as
on the students’ blogs so you can see their excellent work and provide valuable feedback
through blog comments.

Next week we will begin our next unit, “Where we are in place and time,” which will
explore the big idea of what is history and how we know about history. We’ll kick off the unit
with a visit to the Happy Valley Cemetery, where students will be encouraged to use the
resources there to construct a history of Hong Kong. Our unit will focus on the sources we
use to uncover and interpret history. More information on this unit will be given to you next
week.

On Tuesday we will celebrate World Maths Day by engaging in Mathletics competitions
with students around the world.

Next Friday, March 4, from 8am-9am, students will participate in the Book Swap. Please
refer to previous posts for more information.

Please note: Swimming for Grade 5 will begin on Thursday, March 2 and will follow the
same timetable as last semester.

Spring into Reading information and documents can be downloaded through the links
found in last week’s blog post.

Kind Regards,
