Development of SMEs: for sustainable economic growth

IPC-IG’s Research Coordinator, Dr. Fábio Veras Soares participated in the international workshop on “(Conditional) Cash Transfer Programmes (CCTs) in the Arab Region”, in Beirut, Lebanon, from 19 to 20 July. The workshop was organised and hosted by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), and the World Bank. The event brought together ministers and officials from ten countries across the Arab region that have already implemented cash transfer programmes or are planning to design one.
PAA Africa Phase II: Final Monitoring Results
The IPC-IG's Senior Research Coordinator Fabio Veras attended the annual plenary session of the FAO's Committee on World Food Security (CFS), held in Rome, Italy, from 17 to 21 October. CFS is the foremost inclusive international and intergovernmental platform for all stakeholders to work together to ensure food security and nutrition for all. The Committee reports to the UN General Assembly through the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and to FAO Conference.
The side event "Connecting Smallholders to markets", organized by the Government of Brazil, FAO, WFP and IPC-IG, presented the results of South-South Cooperation initiatives to adapt the Brazilian Hunger Zero (Fome Zero) programme to the context of African countries. Dr. Veras delivered a presentation on the results of the PAA Africa programmes, which aims to implement institutional food purchased from smallholder farmers for school feeding.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Broadband Internet adoption disparities decrease when regression analysis holds constant certain household characteristics, such as income, education, race, ethnicity, foreign-born status, household composition, disability status, or geographic location. • The most important reasons households without broadband Internet or dial-up service gave for not subscribing were: (1) lack of need or interest (47%) (2) lack of affordability (24%) (3) inadequate computer (15%) • Households reporting affordability as the major barrier to subscribing to broadband service cited both the fixed cost of purchasing a computer and the recurring monthly subscription costs as important factors • Analysis of the expanded CPS data suggests that work, school, public libraries, and someone else’s house were all popular alternatives for Internet access among those with no home broadband Internet access service
