EPQ SUBJECT TITLE
Philippa Weston
Why do I want to do the EPQ
 To show lecturers at university that I’m
interested in the subject
 To learn key skills in writing dissertations,
researching and working independently
 Develop my use of different technologies and
applications
 To find an understanding of what university
work will be like
 To gain a qualification that is highly desired
A-level subjects
A- level subjects:
 English Language
 Media Studies
 Fine Art
The area I want to explore in EPQ is media so I will
need to talk to a course leader of Media Studies
(my teachers: Alistair Norman and Nicola
Naisbett) to find if any of my ideas clash with the
syllabus
Initial Ideas
 Analyse how production of the film industry
has changed since 1920
 Compare and contrast an original and re-made
film
 Compare and contrast a film from the 1920s
and a film from 2015
Initial ideas
This was my favourite
idea however after
speaking to my
teacher I can’t do it as
in the syllabus we
cover a vast majority
of what I wanted to
explore in lessons.
Therefore, he
suggested this idea
using Alejandro
González Iñárritu’s
‘Bird Man’ and
comparing that with
the original.
Analyse how production of
the film industry has changed
since 1920
Compare and contrast an
original and re-made film
My EPQ final idea
I want to use ‘Compare and contrast an original
and re-made film’ as I think it will be interesting
to see how different directors use the same
source and idea but make different movies
while also using different processes and
equipment.
Films I could use: Bird Man, Alice in
Wonderland, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate
Factory, Cinderella or Romeo and Juliet
What question do I want to explore?
Idea: Compare and contrast an original and re-made film
Questions:
 How does the remade film follow the same conventions
of the original film?
 What differences are there between the two films?
 How have the directors used the source or idea to
influence their film?
 What similarities are there between the two films?
Exploration of top 3 questions:
Proposed question number 1:
How does the remade film follow the same conventions of the
original film?
What to research:
 Cinematography, mise – en - scene, sound and editing
through watching the film and reading articles, reviews and
journals
 Have both used the same influences?
 Has the directors used the same techniques and processes?
 Is there any differences in the plot?
Exploration of top 3 questions:
Proposed question number 2:
What differences are there between the two films?
What to research:
 Changes when viewing
 What different editing processors have been used?
 Are there changes in the mise – en – scene?
 Is there any social group representations?
 Are there any changes in main characters, atmospheres or
plot?
Exploration of top 3 questions:
Proposed question number 3:
How have the directors used the source or idea to influence
their film?
What to research:
 What were the two sources?
 If they were the same have they been interpreted differently?
 How have the directors used the source?
 To what effect have these sources been used for
entertainment purposes?
Final question:
I have decided to research and answer the
question ‘How does the remade film follow the
same conventions of the original film?’ as I feel I
could answer this fully while also incorporating
some of the answers from the other questions
into this one.
