2. Environmental Responsibility
An aspect of good citizenship is the way we cared for the
environment.
Earth’s resources are finite and there is concern about issues:
Global warming
Lack of sustainability of the current lifestyles of the majority of
the earth’s inhabitants.
4. Boyan Slat
Boyan Slat (born 27 July
1994)
Is a Dutch inventor,
entrepreneur and aerospace
engineering student who
works on methods of
cleaning plastic waste from
the ocean.
“Human history is basically a
list of things that couldn’t be
done and then were done.”
5. Questions
1. Explain Boyat Slat’s idea to clean
up the ocean?
2. What is the great pacific garbage patch?
3. What Barrier’s were there to Pursue his dream and how did
Boyat Slat overcome them?
4. How much plastic does Boyat Slat think can be removed in
the next 10 years in the North Pacific Garbage Patch?
5. How much would it cost to reduce the plastic?
6. What are the responsibilities of individuals, communities
and government in ensuring environmental responsibility?
7. 1. Explain Boyat Slat’s idea to clean up the
ocean?
The Ocean Cleanup Array is an anchored network of floating booms and processing
platforms will span the radius of a gyre.
The booms act as giant funnels where the angle of the booms effectively 'suck'
rubbish in.
The debris enters the platforms, where it will be filtered out of the water and
eventually stored in containers until collected for recycling on land.
9. 3.What Barriers were there to Pursue his dream
and how did Boyat Slat overcome them?
Barriers Solutions
Finance Crowd funding
Building a team Volunteers
Maritime law Research
Storms A floating barrier that can withstand
95% of conditions.
Booms can be decoupled to move
with waves.
Depth – 1. to collect deep waste
- 2. to anchor
1. Most plastic is in the top 3 metres.
2. Mooring design is used as an
anchor.
Damaging the environment Marine life unlikely to be tangled – no
nets.
What is going to be done with the
collected plastics?
Plastic can be made into oil and
recyclable material
10. 4. How much plastic does Boyat Slat think can be removed in
the next 10 years in the North Pacific Garbage Patch?
Almost half.
5. How much would it cost to reduce the plastic?
$6 a kilo. 33x cheaper than
conventional methods.
11. 6.What are the responsibilities of individuals,
communities and government in ensuring
environmental responsibility?
Individuals
Clean up after ourselves
Educate others
Participating in community environmental
activities
Communities
Protecting the environment within the
community
ensuring decision-making incorporates
environmentally sustainable development
principles
Ensuring rules and regulations within the
community.
Government
• Create laws that punish
littering.
• Carry out research to aid
decision making.
• Finance environmental
schemes
