The Ailing Earth : The
Green Movement’s Role
By : Nani Palkhivala
INTRODUCTION
• The Ailing Planet is a sad commentary that voices
concern and rings alarm bells to highlight a shrinking
environment. The gradual deterioration of our
environment is due to a staggering biological system.
• The green movement, a term that includes the conservation and
green politics, is a diverse scientific, social and political movement for
addressing environmental issues.
• Environmentalists advocate the sustainable management of resources
and stewardship of the environment through changes in public policy
and individual behavior. The movement is centered on ecology, health
and human rights.
PRIMARY FOCUS OF THE
GREEN MOVEMENT…
• The conservation movement seeks to protect natural areas for
sustainable consumption, as well as traditional (hunting, fishing,
trapping) and spiritual use.
• Environmental conservation is the process in which one is involved
in conserving the natural aspects of the environment. Whether
through reforestation, recycling or pollution control, environmental
conservation sustains the natural quality of life.
• Environmental health movement dates atleast to progressive era, and
focuses on urban standards like clean water, efficient sewage
handling and stable population growth.
WHY IS OUR PLANET DAMAGING???
• Mankind is now the number one cause of all the destruction happening on the Earth. As well as
trying to destroy each other on the battle field, we are the cause of a series of other disasters,
beginning with the industrial exploitation of the resources of the Earth. This has become especially
bad since the population of the Earth has tripled in the last fifty years.
• The seas and oceans are being poisoned by chemical products, oils, industrial and human waste. On
land, especially in the industrial countries where most waste is “manufactured”, there is increasingly
little room to bury it and even when buried, noxious elements leech out and destroy the health of
the area.
OTHER REASONS
• An even greater problem is the disposal of atomic waste, unsafe to
dump into the sea and even more unsafe to bury under the land.
• Forests are cut down for many reasons, but most of them are related
to money or to people’s need to provide for their families.
FACTS
• The destruction of the Earth’s rain forests by cutting (an estimated
fourteen acres every minute) is constantly decreasing the production
of oxygen and rainfall necessary for life, while other forests in Europe
and North America are being poisoned by acid rain. ‘green house’
effect of overheating the earth by excessive hydrocarbons and
carbon-dioxide in the atmosphere, contributed to mainly by car-
exhausts, is causing global warming and the melting of the polar ice-
caps and glaciers, causing raised ocean levels and unseasonal and
adverse weather patterns.
PRESENT CONDITION OF EARTH
• Earth’s present condition is that it is in a damaged state and under
threat from dangers including those arising from global warming.
• These threats include green house gases, floods, hunger and famine
and devastating diseases such as malaria and aids.
• Climate change is seen by some scientists to present the biggest
threat to our world today. The whole world needs to effect remedial
strategies by cooperating.
FUTURE OF EARTH
• As the world consumes more fossil fuel energy, greenhouse gas
concentrations will continue to rise and Earth’s average temperature
will rise with them.
• Global warming will result in more hot days and fewer cold days, with
the greatest warming happening over land.
• Those species that cannot adapt quickly enough will face extinction.
• The frequency and severity of drought will increase.
STEPS TO SAVE
OUR AILING
PLANET…
REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE...
Do your part to reduce waste by choosing
reusable products instead of disposables.
Buying products with minimal packaging will
help to reduce waste. And whenever you can,
recycle paper, plastic, newspaper, glass and
aluminum cans. If there isn’t a recycling
program at your workplace or in your
community, ask about starting one. By
recycling half of your household waste, you
can save 2,400 pounds carbon dioxide
annually.
MEASURES TO BE TAKEN
• Buying and using fluorescent light bulbs. Turning off lights and
other electronic equipment when we leave a room.
• Avoid using chemical pesticides or fertilizers in your yard and
garden. Try organic products instead.
• Waste food material, paper, decaying vegetables and plastics should
not be thrown into open drains.
• Keep your vehicles well maintained as it can create more air
pollution and use more fuel.
DRIVE LESS AND DRIVE SMART
• Less driving means fewer emissions. Besides saving gasoline, walking
and biking are great forms of exercise. Explore your community mass
transit system, and check out options for carpooling to work or
school.
• When you do drive make sure your car is running efficiently.
