THE AILING
PLANET: THE
GREEN
MOVEMENT’S
ROLE
• The green movement is
a term that includes the
conservation of various
plant species and green
politics is a diverse
scientific and political
movement for
addressing
environment issues….
The future of
the humanity
will depend on
how we
conserve the
resources and
pass them to
our future
generations…

THE GREEN MOVEMENT
GREEN
MOVEMENT’S
ROLE
12
• The green movement
aims at creating a
holistic and ecological
view of the world. It
makes people
conscious of stopping
further degradation
and deterioration of
nature and its
resources.
• It was started 25 years
ago .

CONDITION OF
EARTH
Earth is in a damaged state and
under threat from dangers like global
warming.
Threats include greenhouse gases,
droughts and floods, hunger, famine
and devastating diseases.
Expert scientists are calling for
carbon taxes to cut the risk.
Damage from flooding alone could
run into billions of dollars….
Bellows College
➢ As world consumes more
fossil fuels, greenhouse
gases concentration will
increase.
➢ Global warming leads to
more hot days and fewer
cool days..
➢ High altitudes and generally
wet places will tend to
receive more rainfall..

● In words of Dr. Myers,
“The powerhouse of evolution”
THE TROPICAL
FORESTS
Bellows College
“FORESTS PRECEDE
MANKIND; DESERTS
FOLLOW.”
Naturally, forests precede mankind. Forests were in
existence much before the coming of man on this planet.
But if the felling of trees continues, soon forests will be
converted to deserts.

Whoa!That’s a big number, aren’t you proud?
26

The world bank
estimates that a five
fold increase in rate
of forest planting is
needed to cope up
with the expected

But these laws are never
respected.
● Our parliament highlights the
near catastrophic depletion of
the India’s forests.
● Large areas,(officially
designated as forest land)
“are already virtually treeless.”
● ‘critical’ in many countries
investigated.

➢ It took mankind many years
to reach the first billion
population around the year
1800.
➢ 1900: second billion was
added.
➢ 20th century has added
another 3.7 billion.
➢ Every four days the world’s
population increases by one
million

Fertility falls as
income rise,
education spreads
and health
improves.Thus
development is
the best
contraceptive…
Humans should
not be treated
like cattle who
are sterilized by
force.
As the rich get richer, the
poor born children are
bound to remain poorer.
More population leads to
more unemployment.
•But there is no alternative to
voluntary family planning without
introducing an element of coercion.
•Now humans have to choose
between population control and
keeping up with poverty.
•The population of India is estimated
to be 920 million today… more than
the populations of Africa and south
America.
Bellows College
•The green movement started in
1972.
•It has now captured the
imagination of millions.
•The green party was established
in new zealand in 1972.
•Man shares this earth with 1.4
million species.

•We should not leave a burned earth,
advancing deserts and ailing
environment.
•E.R Brown describes- fisheries,
forests, grassland and croplands as
four principal biological systems of the
earth.
•These four systems are the basic of
global economic systems.
•Fisheries are being ruined, forests are
being decimated.
•Grassland and cropland are converted
into desert.
Bellows College 37
•Tropical forests are disappearing at the rate
of 40 to 50 millions acres a year.
•Article 48A of the constitution asserts that
“the state shall attempt to protect and
improve the environment.
•But such laws are never respected and
enforced in India.
•A satellite study of the U.N.O shows that in
88 countries the environment can be called
critical.
•Population explosion has been the main
cause of destroying environment.
•The present population is more than 5.7
billions. Every four days the world
population is increased by one million.

⊷ The notice “the world’s most dangerous animal” at a
cage in the zoo at Lusaka, Zambia signifies that man
is surely responsible for all the destruction in the
environment and depletion of natural resources.
Because inside the cage, there is no animal but a
mirror where one sees his own reflection. Basically it
is man who thinks that earth is his property and he
can dominate it in any way he likes and fulfill his
selfish needs.
40
Q. What does the notice “the world’s most
dangerous animal” at a cage in the zoo at
Lusaka, Zambia, signify?
Bellows College
Q. How are the earth’s principle biological
systems being depleted?
⊷ There are four principal biological systems in India –
⊷ Fisheries
⊷ Forests
⊷ Grasslands
⊷ Croplands
⊷ Unfortunately we are consuming fishes everyday to get protein. In some
poor countries, local forests are being cut to get enough firewood for
cooking and many purposes. The greenland and many other croplands
are used for factories and buildings. The croplands are destroying
because of usage of chemical fertilisers which make soil dry.
⊷ Finally, the greenland and croplands are converted into deserts and
wastelands.
41
Bellows College
Q. Why does the author aver that the
growth of world population is one of the
strongest factors distorting the future of
human society?
⊷ The growth of world population puts a severe strain
on the earth’s principle and biological systems . Due
to excessive human claims, these reach an
unsustainable level where their productivity is
damaged. Development is not possible if world
population continues to grow so rapidly.
⊷ Increasing population brings hunger, poverty and
unemployment.

Nature has a heart, same as us
So don’t rip it out anymore…
Trees have life too
So don’t you drag them down anymore…..
The wind once was the greatest pleasure..
But now it has turned into an unheard scream..
You’ve got a pair of ears,
So don’t pretend to be deaf anymore….
Bellows College
The river, it’s blood of the nature,
It’s drying up, it’s toxicated!
So you better stand for it all..
Or soon the nature would be catastrophic…!!

  • 34. Humans should not be treated like cattle who are sterilized by force. As the rich get richer, the poor born children are bound to remain poorer. More population leads to more unemployment. •But there is no alternative to voluntary family planning without introducing an element of coercion. •Now humans have to choose between population control and keeping up with poverty. •The population of India is estimated to be 920 million today… more than the populations of Africa and south America.

  • 40. Bellows College ⊷ The notice “the world’s most dangerous animal” at a cage in the zoo at Lusaka, Zambia signifies that man is surely responsible for all the destruction in the environment and depletion of natural resources. Because inside the cage, there is no animal but a mirror where one sees his own reflection. Basically it is man who thinks that earth is his property and he can dominate it in any way he likes and fulfill his selfish needs. 40 Q. What does the notice “the world’s most dangerous animal” at a cage in the zoo at Lusaka, Zambia, signify?
  • 41. Bellows College Q. How are the earth’s principle biological systems being depleted? ⊷ There are four principal biological systems in India – ⊷ Fisheries ⊷ Forests ⊷ Grasslands ⊷ Croplands ⊷ Unfortunately we are consuming fishes everyday to get protein. In some poor countries, local forests are being cut to get enough firewood for cooking and many purposes. The greenland and many other croplands are used for factories and buildings. The croplands are destroying because of usage of chemical fertilisers which make soil dry. ⊷ Finally, the greenland and croplands are converted into deserts and wastelands. 41
  • 42. Bellows College Q. Why does the author aver that the growth of world population is one of the strongest factors distorting the future of human society? ⊷ The growth of world population puts a severe strain on the earth’s principle and biological systems . Due to excessive human claims, these reach an unsustainable level where their productivity is damaged. Development is not possible if world population continues to grow so rapidly. ⊷ Increasing population brings hunger, poverty and unemployment. 42
