Aims of Environmental
Education• To provide different groups of people as well
as graduates in a variety of professional fields
with the knowledge needed to develop a sense
of responsibility towards the environment and
the rational and the rational utilization of its
riches.
• To make use of these knowledge and skills to
preserve, conserve and utilize the environment
in a sustainable manner for the benefit of
present and future generations.
Origin of Environmental Education
 The roots of environmental education can be traced back as
early as the 18th century when ”Jean-Jacques
Rousseau” stressed the importance of an education that focuses
on the environment in Education.
 He encouraged students to “Study nature”.
 One of the first articles about environmental education as a new
movement appeared in the Phi Delta Kappan in 1969, authored
by James A. Swan.
 The first Earth Day on April 22, 1970 – a national teach-in about
environmental problems – paved the way for the modern
environmental education movement
 In 1972, declared environmental education must be used as a tool to
address global environmental problems. The United Nations Education
Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and United Nations
Environment Program (UNEP) created three major declarations that have
guided the course of environmental education.
 In 2002, the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable
Development 2005-2014 (UNDESD) was formed as a way to reconsider,
excite, and change approaches to acting positively on global challenges.
 On June 9–14, 2013, the seventh World Environmental Education Congress
was held in Marrakesh, Morocco. The overall theme of the conference was
"Environmental education and issues in cities and rural areas: seeking
greater harmony”. This meeting was the first time ever that it had been
held in an Arab country, and was put together by two different
organizations, the Mohamed VI Foundation for Environmental Protection
and the World Environmental Education Congress Permanent Secretariat in
Italy.
Pre Requisition for a Successful Environmental Education
The long-term aims of environmental education are to improve
management of environment and provide satisfactory solutions
to environmental issues.
Provide opportunities to acquire the knowledge, values,
attitudes, commitment and skills needed to protect and improve
the environment.
Imagination and enthusiasm are heightened
Learning transcends the classroom
creative thinking skills are enhanced
State and national learning standards are met for multiple
subjects
Responsible action is taken to better the environment
Communities are strengthened
Healthy lifestyles are encouraged
Importance of Environmental
Education
1. Increases student engagement in science
2. Improves student achievement in core
subject areas
3. Provides critical tools for a 21st century
workface
4. Helps address “nature deficit disorder”

Conclusion
Environmental education does not advocate a
particular viewpoint or course of action. Rather,
environmental education teaches individuals how to
weigh various sides of an issue through critical
thinking and it enhances their own problem-solving
and decision-making skills.
Environmental Education is a new focus for
education.
It is a way of helping individuals and societies to
resolve fundamental issues relating to the current
and future use of the world's resources.
However, simply raising awareness of these issues
is insufficient to bring about change. Environmental
